- 1:33time now for Johnny Dellair, Providence, Rhode Island. Calling mister Dollar.
- 1:41Yes one moment, please go ahead. Hello, Hello, mister Dollar.
- 1:46Yes, this is Dick Porter. I'd like to hire you. Porter.
- 1:49Dick Porter, I am an insurance broker here. Burt Masterson, a United
- 1:53Adjustment Bureaus, suggested, ey context, Oh what's the trouble, mister Porter.
- 1:57Well, darned if I know exactly. I just have a client who's
- 2:00taking out all the insurance he can get. I may be wrong, but
- 2:04it looks to me like he's getting ready to die. Oh can you help
- 2:07me out? I can try, mister Porter. Tonight and every Weekday Night
- 2:19Bob Bailey and the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed Expense Account
- 2:23America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigator Yours Trulee Johnny Dollar. Expense Accounts submitted by special
- 2:44investigator Johnny Dollar to Richard Porter for Ady Webster Boulevard, Providence, Rhode Island.
- 2:50The following is an accounting of expendit yours. During my investigation of the
- 2:53Shepherd Matter expense account item won fifteen dollars air faireness, so that's hard for
- 3:00the Providence. I arrived at two thirty in the afternoon and was in my
- 3:04hotel room by three point fifteen. At five o'clock, I was having a
- 3:07quiet drink with Porter, who turned out to be a twenty four year man
- 3:09in the insurance brokerage business and seemed to know what he was about. I've
- 3:15never had anything like this happen to me, and I didn't quite know what
- 3:19to do about it. I'm glad I can get some expert advice from you,
- 3:22while I don't know how expert the advice will be, but I don't
- 3:23do what I can for you, mister Porter, and one another one of
- 3:27these. No, I'm fine for now, thank you. I'll try to
- 3:30explain this matter as far as I know. Two days ago, doctor Shepherd
- 3:32called me up and inquired about rates on straight Life insurance. He's carried about
- 3:38twenty thousand dollars worth. The policies ten years are better. I have the
- 3:42figures in my office. I gave him the prices for coverage, and he
- 3:45said he'd take eighty thousand dollars, which would bring him up to an even
- 3:49hundred thousand. Now Shepherd's a single man. The beneficiary on his other policies
- 3:53is his mother, Claire Shepherd. She lives over in Pawtucket. He's only
- 3:57dependent. He wants to name herb officiary again. I see now ward the
- 4:02matter stand with doctor Sheppard right now. I told him to take a few
- 4:06days to draw the policies up. He sent me a check for the first
- 4:10payment and told me to do what had to be done. I don't want
- 4:14to act on his application until I know it's okay. Sure, Well,
- 4:17what can you tell me about doctor Shepard? Very little. He seems to
- 4:20have a good practice here in town and does his share of charity work and
- 4:24so on. As far as I know, he's above. Question would have
- 4:28to be, of course, practice medicine here. He has an apartment above
- 4:30his officers, owns building, all of his equipment. Know anything about his
- 4:34friends. No, Now, let me understand this about doctor Sheppard. He
- 4:39called you, you didn't call him. He wanted to buy the insurance,
- 4:42you didn't try to sell it. That's about it. Yes, And that's
- 4:45why I'm worried. Give me one hundred people and I'll show you ninety nine
- 4:47out of that hundred who will never never call up an insurance broker and say
- 4:51I want to buy some life insurance. People have to be sold life insurance.
- 4:56They'll go out and shop around for fire, theft coverage, obil insurance
- 5:00held almost any kind, but straight life insurance that has to be sold.
- 5:05On the other hand. Suppose Shepherd is that one in one hundred. Yeah,
- 5:11it may be a perfectly legitimate situation. Yeah, Shepherd may have looked
- 5:15into his mirror one night and said to himself, I got to have one
- 5:16hundred thousand dollars worth of insurance or I won't sleep A wink. Oh yeah,
- 5:19it could have happened that way, mister porter. But I have to
- 5:24think of those ninety nine people in that hundred sure sure sort of way.
- 5:29Well, here's to caution, cheers. Expense account adam two twenty five dollars
- 5:36deposit on a rented car, which I use the following day driving from place
- 5:41to place. Collecting data on doctor Charles Sheppard, MD. At his bank,
- 5:45I was able to learn that he enjoyed what might be called a lucrative
- 5:47practice, and that, like most people, he spent slightly more than he
- 5:50made. He belonged to a golf club where he was seldom seen. He
- 5:55belonged to a tennis club, which he managed to make three or four times
- 5:58a week. Questioning the pharmacist who had the prescription Countra a half block from
- 6:01doctor Shepherd's building, and the manager of a cafeteria across the street from same
- 6:05I was unable to learn who doctor Shepherd's steady companions were or gain any information
- 6:10that would justify his puzzling application for life insurance. Hello, good morning,
- 6:24Oh, good morning. I'd like to see doctor Shepherd. Please. Do
- 6:28you have an appointment? No? I don't. Well, may I have
- 6:30your name? Please? Johnny Dollar? Dollar Dollar, Are you a regular
- 6:35patient of doctor Shepherd's. Mister, No, no, I'm not. I
- 6:40didn't think I recalled your name. I've been with doctor Shepherd almost five years.
- 6:45Who recommended doctor Shepherd? No one when, mister Dollar, I'm afraid
- 6:49doctor's out now and won't be back until late this afternoon. Well, now
- 6:55that's funny. I was standing out in front of you three minutes ago,
- 6:57and I thought I saw doctor Shepherd walk in. Please, miss Dollar,
- 7:00he is not in to anyone. What's your name? Why? I'm mis
- 7:05Treeter, Miss Treeter. Well, yes, but I like to see doctor
- 7:09Shepherd. Miss Treeter here, oh insurance investing? He yes, Will you
- 7:16tell the doctor that please? Why? Yes, I'm sorry I had to
- 7:23tell your doctor was out. He asked me to say that to everyone who
- 7:27came in. I'm afraid the doctor's been acting strangely all day. I'm very
- 7:30much concerned over him. Excuse me. The tall, pale brunette girl in
- 7:36the crisply Starts uniform was certainly concerned about something. She bit her lip,
- 7:42forced do on a wan unprofessional smile, and looked like she wanted to cry,
- 7:46just before she disappeared beyond the reception room to seek out doctor Sheppard.
- 7:49I pretended not to notice that part One minute passed, two minutes, three
- 7:54minutes, no one reappeared. So I pushed the door open and I looked
- 7:59down the corridorading to the examination rooms and laboratory. I had to notice doctor
- 8:03Charles Shepherd standing at the end of the corridor. Most of his costume was
- 8:07medically correct, white coat, stethoscope in one hand, but on the other
- 8:11hand he brandished a thirty two automatic and the safety was off. Stay where
- 8:16you are, mister, and get your hands up. What pucket do you
- 8:22keep your credentials in? Left inside? I'll get her insurance investigator for whom
- 8:31at the moment, for mister porter Dick. Yeah here, I'm sorry,
- 8:39mister Dollar. I guess I'm very nervous these days. Oh, mister Dollar,
- 8:45I'd like to get you a dress and phone number before. Well,
- 8:48that's all right, Korean. Don't you think this might be a good time
- 8:50to go out and get a bite? Well, it's a little early,
- 8:54doctor, I have some lab tests. Go ahead, Korean like a good
- 8:56girl and lock up. Yes, goodbye, mister dog. Yeah, goodbye,
- 9:09very fine girl, Korean. Jeez been with me five years. She
- 9:11told me. Oh, I don't know how I'm going to explain meeting you
- 9:18in the hallway with this in my hand. Yes, well, before you
- 9:22try, suppose you snap the safety on? Oh? Yes, how you
- 9:28look somewhat foolish. I guess you want to come in my office? Sure,
- 9:35you say, mister Porter's. Mister Porter told me you made an application
- 9:39for eighty thousand dollars worth of life insurance. We look into things like that.
- 9:43Doctor, investigate me because I want to buy life insurance. Yeah,
- 9:48you're a single man with few responsibility. Well, I don't know whether to
- 9:52be irritated or not. Am I going to get my insurance? I wouldn't
- 9:54be irritated? Doctor. What's yourself in the insurance company's position? It's not
- 10:00used to this kind of application. Oh, you may get it. I
- 10:03don't know, but obviously you're in some kind of trouble gone at all.
- 10:07Well, I you know, the whole thing is a ridiculous mess, mister
- 10:11Dollar. My life has been threatened by a man who has definite homicidal tendencies.
- 10:16I suppose I've been acting very strangely lately. I don't know whether to
- 10:20leave town or give up my practice. All you have to do is pick
- 10:24up the telephone and call the police and tell them about it. A thriller
- 10:26in your life comes under a police business. Doctor. I know that,
- 10:28and I would go to the police only. Well, it's a very delicate
- 10:31matter. I have a patient's welfare to think of it. You can't very
- 10:35well treat any patient if you're dead. I suppose you sit down and tell
- 10:39me all about it, all right. Several months ago I treated a woman
- 10:46named Forbes. A thorough examination and consultation disclosed that her poor physical condition was
- 10:50not based on any organic disorder, but rather upon her own emotional instability,
- 10:56not an uncommon diagnosis this hectic day and age. You heard of things like
- 11:00this, mister Dollar. Oh, I've heard of semantics and neurotics and psychotics.
- 11:03But I'm not a doctor. Well, let me tell you the psychotherapeutic
- 11:07side of medicine is by far the most challenging and one in which I've had
- 11:09considerable experience. Consequently, I undertook to treat Missus Forbes, hoping to affect
- 11:15a cure. Are you a psychiatrist, doctor, No, I am not.
- 11:18Don't misunderstand me, mister Doller. In the process of treating Missus Forbes's
- 11:22physical ailments, I urged her to recount a variety of experiences, talk to
- 11:26her from day to day, probing all the while for the source of her
- 11:30trouble. It has been my intention from the first to place her in the
- 11:33hands of a competent neurologist. I suspected her troubled early in the treatment.
- 11:39She's married to an erratic, ruthless, ill tempered man, Paul Forbes.
- 11:43Oh, I made a grave error. When Missus Forbes pressed me last week,
- 11:48Well, I could only tell her to move out and divorce him immediately.
- 11:52That's pretty extreme advice, doctor, I know, but I also know
- 11:56the advice was right. Oh, you aren't in sympathy with me, I
- 11:58can see. But let me tell you that any competent psychiatrist would have advised
- 12:03her the same. I approached her husband on the matter a few days ago.
- 12:05What I explained to him that Missus Forbes's health, her very life is
- 12:09in jeopardy, that more is involved here than just keeping intact. A union
- 12:13which has nothing but legality, is a binding force. And mister Forbes doesn't
- 12:18care for semantics. He doesn't care for Missus Forbes, mister Dowler. He
- 12:22ranted and raved and accused me of trying to break up his home, and
- 12:24finally he attacked me. I managed to get away. Did he threaten you
- 12:28then? Yes, he said he'd kill me. Who else was there?
- 12:30What do you mean? Who heard him say these things? R Missus Forbes
- 12:33was there, and a servant in their home, Yes, a servant uptons
- 12:35his name. I believe he should have called the police. I should have
- 12:39done a lot of things differently in my lifetime, but I didn't call the
- 12:43police. My primary concern is for Missus Forbes. Further shock and guilt complex
- 12:48could be totally disastrous to hers. So here gonna creak around here with a
- 12:52gun in your hand, I don't know whether I'd even know how to use
- 12:56it. I why the application for all the insurance? I wondered if Forbes
- 13:05might get me. I wanted to be sure my mother was taken care of.
- 13:07I don't know whether anyone's ever threatened your life, and you knew for
- 13:13certain he'd try to carry out the threat. But that is the position I
- 13:16am in. What are you going to do? I don't know. I'll
- 13:20think of something, But what about my insurance? That's up to mister Porter.
- 13:24If what you say is true, I wouldn't assure you. What do
- 13:26you mean if it's true. Of course it's true, Doctor, I don't
- 13:30believe it. I left him standing there in the corridor, staring after me,
- 13:37a lonely man, somehow not as frightened a man as he tried to
- 13:41let me believe. I wondered about that. I was still wondering about it
- 13:46when I went to sleep that night. Johnny Dollar, Big Porter, mister
- 14:05Dollar, Hi, did you check on doctor Shepard? Yeah? Do I
- 14:09write up his policies? Well, that's up to you, mister Porter.
- 14:13Doctor Shepherd's life has been threatened. What that's according to him? And the
- 14:16man who threatened his life has definite homicidal tendencies also according to doctor Shepard.
- 14:20Well what do you think, Porter? I think doctor Shepherd's a liar expense
- 14:35account. Submitted by special investigator Johnny Dollar to Richard Porter for Ady Webster Boulevard,
- 14:41Providence, Rhode Island. The following is an accounting of expenditures during my
- 14:45investigation of the Shepherd matter. More expensive it him three twenty six cents one
- 14:52bottle of aspirin for mister Porter. I felt he was going to need it.
- 14:56I hope you are trying to be funny, mister. I'm not,
- 14:58mister Porter. I think you've got a tough decision to make. I know
- 15:01that the commission on eighty thousand dollars worth of insurance would be high. Sit
- 15:07down, Oh thanks, mister Porter. Doctor Shepherd told me he bought or
- 15:11tried to buy all that insurance because he thought a man named Forbes was going
- 15:15to kill him. He bought it, he said, to make certain his
- 15:18mother is well provided for. He was carrying a thirty two colt. Now
- 15:22he spoke of treating Forbes's wife and of advising her that divorce would settle her
- 15:26health problem. Mister Forbes didn't like that and accused Shepherd of trying to wreck
- 15:30his home. And well that's about it. Now, what have we got?
- 15:35Well, your doctor Sheppard is either nuts or an idiot. Or the
- 15:37cleverest man alive. I don't know. I do know. I believe about
- 15:41one half of what he told me, maybe less. What reason would he
- 15:43have to live? Treats me. If someone threatened your life or mine,
- 15:46we turn to the police for help. Now Shepherd won't do that, insists
- 15:50that it would probably be hazardous in the case of his patient, missus Forbes.
- 15:54I don't want to write up this policy of what he says is true,
- 15:56but I don't want to pass up the commission. If it is true.
- 16:00Can you stick around town for another day or two and find out about
- 16:03it. I'll do what I can. Mister Porter, go ahead, have
- 16:06an aspirin. He had an aspirin, and I had a car ride once
- 16:12again out to the offices of doctor Shepherd. The same things are more or
- 16:15less going on in the same way. His nurse, Miss Streeter, appeared
- 16:18as distraught as ever. Once she recognized me. There was a quick dabbing
- 16:22at the eyes, a straightening of the hair before she spoke, I good
- 16:27morning, mister Dollar. Oh oh, I like to see the doctor again.
- 16:30He was calling mister Porter's office trying to locate you. I'll buzz him,
- 16:38mister Dollar. Do you have anything to do with why doctor's been carrying
- 16:42a gun. No, that's his business. In other words, I should
- 16:47mind my business. Well, I'm being honest. I've advised him what to
- 16:49do on the matter. What matter. He'll have to explain that to you,
- 16:52Miss Streeter. It doesn't make much sense to me. You can go
- 16:56back now, okay, nice he al mister doll. Hello, doctor,
- 17:04you were pretty insulting yesterday. I'm sorry about that, but we both have
- 17:08a problem to solve, and I get paid sometimes for deliberately insulting people.
- 17:15You're a stranger. You want to change his story about all this? I
- 17:18wish I could change it. It's still a miss, A bad miss.
- 17:22I thought it all out last night, and I still missed hold of my
- 17:25original thinking. I have to place my concern for my patient, missus Forbes,
- 17:27before anything else. In other words, you won't call the police and
- 17:30tell them your life's been threatened. No, and you're very stubborn about that
- 17:33part. I don't think you comprehend the situation at all. Wait a minute,
- 17:37let's understand each other. Doctor. If this man Forbes is all you
- 17:40say he is, and you say you're the expert on homicidal tendencies. Then
- 17:44the best thing for you to do is to prefer charges against him for threatening
- 17:47your life and have him locked up. Now you could do that, according
- 17:48to what you've told me about Missus Forbes and a servant in their home witnessing
- 17:52is threats. I will try to explain it again. I can't do that
- 17:56for Missus Forbes's sake. I just can't. She's been through a sh pattering
- 18:00ordeal. I must attempt to resolve this quietly. True. I can generally
- 18:03anticipate a man's actions inside my office under clinical conditions, but I well Forbes
- 18:10is different. That's why I tried to contact you today. Someone like you
- 18:14could approach Forbes and possibly persuade him to discard his ideas of violence, probably
- 18:18do it in a quiet way too. What does mister Porter pay you?
- 18:22Well, once I've got to do with it, I'm willing to pay you.
- 18:26I mean, you and I don't seem to get along very well.
- 18:27But I phone Porter and he tells me you're one of the best men in
- 18:30your line of business. I'll pay you to go to Paul Forbes and talk
- 18:33to him as I've described. I can't figure you, doctor, now I'll
- 18:37let you and I not get into any personality arguments. Will you do this
- 18:41for me for your regular fee? I was going to do it anyhow,
- 18:44for mister Porter and the fee he pays me. I just wanted to check
- 18:47you first. I'll do it, but I still think it's a matter for
- 18:49the police. All right, let's leave it this way. You go talk
- 18:53to Forbes. If you think he means to kill me, then I'll call
- 18:56the police and prefer charges against him. Patient or no patient. How's that
- 19:02that sounds a little more sensible, doctor. I took down the home address
- 19:11of Paul Forbes and climbed to my rented car and drove over to his home
- 19:14in the gilded edge of the city, a story and a half colonial with
- 19:17all the turmings, lawns, trees, plymouth convertible, a push button station
- 19:21wagon in the garage. It was a nice, warm spring day and some
- 19:23flowers were blooming and smelling up the area in a very nice way. Flies
- 19:27buzzed, he's drawn, birds sang, and I went up and pressed the
- 19:32doorbell. I should have gone butterfly catching or taken a plane to smoke can
- 19:37Yeah, I'm looking for pearl Forbes. Does he live here? Yeah,
- 19:41he sure does. I'm Forbes, just the forest. My name is Johnny
- 19:42Dull. Yeah, And I came over to talk to you with front of
- 19:49his gun slapped against the side of my head, and I went down to
- 19:52my knees. The door slammed somewhere and someone ran away. I twisted around,
- 19:56trying to see what it was all about, and then I managed to
- 20:00get to my feet. I'm trying to see Paul Forbes plunging the plumb without
- 20:03the driveway and heading I don't know where. Oh good goodness, what happened
- 20:11here? Where's mister Forbes? You hurt? Oh? Miss Forbes? Oh
- 20:18let me help you, sir, give me your well better sit you down
- 20:21over here. Goodness, goodness gracious, how did this happen? Mister Forbes
- 20:27swung a gun? No? Oh no, no easy, sir. Let's
- 20:33sit down here. What happened here? I'm afraid mister Forbes attacked this gentleman,
- 20:40Miss Forbes. Then go to my medicine chest and get some swabs in
- 20:45a panic. Right, the doctor isn't necessary. It just may be your
- 20:48cut, it might be deep. Well, get the first aid things and
- 20:52some brandy up to right away. This is unforgivable, just unforgivable conduct.
- 20:57Please. I don't know who you are. Are you a friend of Paul?
- 21:00No, I'm Johnny Dollar. I wanted to discuss with your husband and
- 21:03something. I take it to your Missus Forbes. Yes, oh, set
- 21:08them right here. Yes, you're feeling a little better, so I don't
- 21:12know yet. He let me try some of that. Here we go,
- 21:18sir, Easy, now, easy? Thanks? How does it look to
- 21:26you? I believe it's not too deep, Missus Forbes. How's a feel,
- 21:30mister Dollar? And I don't think it's very deep. I'll be all
- 21:33right now. Minute up and go. Tell upon doctor Sheppard and tell him
- 21:37to come over here immediately. Mister Dollar, I can't tell you how sorry
- 21:41I am for miss you. You can bring suit against us, You can
- 21:44do anything you want to, mister Dollar. Paul's temper is just ungovernable these
- 21:48days. He could have killed you. He took the car and ran.
- 21:52I don't know what's gotten into it. Two nights ago. You take my
- 21:56personal position having to kill him. Now he's attacked you for no reason at
- 22:02all. Any idea where he might have gone. Heaven only knows. Mad
- 22:06that's what he isn't to doll its mad Pauline Forbes had a right to be
- 22:18scared. From what I'd seen of her and from what I'd seen of her
- 22:22husband. He was an angry man with a gun in his hand, slugging
- 22:25at anyone in sight. She was a distraught woman with a darkening spot underneath
- 22:29her right eye. And it wasn't Miss Garret. I began to wonder who
- 22:32needed more looking after doctor Shepherd, Missus Forbes or Johnny Dollar. No,
- 22:38you just I still know, sir. Why. I guess you kind of
- 22:42fainted a little bit. Anything I can get you, sir? No,
- 22:47just tell me about mister Forbes, a beggar pardoner. Look, I'm an
- 22:51insurance investigator. I came here today to talk to mister Forbes about threatening doctor
- 22:55Shepherd's life. Oh well, I wouldn't want to talk out of turn,
- 23:00so you you better discuss that with miss Forb. Now, just one question.
- 23:03Did mister Forbes threaten doctor Shepherd's life? Yes, sir, you heard
- 23:07him. I did. He attacked doctor Shepherd here two nights ago. Did
- 23:11he also attacked Missus Forbes? Mister Dollar? This is an unhappy house.
- 23:18Things are going all wrong here the last few months, mister Forbes changed.
- 23:22Miss Forbes, Well, I don't know, but please don't ask me to
- 23:26speak up against anyone. I'm just trying to find out the best thing to
- 23:30do for everybody concern. What can you do, sir? I know I
- 23:33didn't think anything like this. Terrible, terrible, this about seven and now
- 23:37I want you to go up your room and lie down. There's no sense
- 23:40in you're getting any more excited. I want to see about mister Dollar.
- 23:42First, good morning, doctor. Hell, let's have a look at this
- 23:47Dollar. Get that line, Yes, sir, how is it? Well?
- 23:55I don't think it's anything worse than a cut. How do you feel?

- 24:15Yeah, am I all right? Busy? Yeah? A little that'll wear
- 24:21off. They'll take him into custody and probably talk some sense to him.
- 24:25This is awful. You go up to your room now, missus Forbes.
- 24:27We will handle this up to take missus Forbes upstairs. Yes, you just
- 24:33come along with thank you. Yeah, she is not a well woman.
- 24:42She looks all right to me. I wish she were. I don't want
- 24:47to get an next ray on that head. Can you come by the office
- 24:48this afternoon? Yeah, I guess give me the police. I doubt if
- 24:52it's concussion or anything like that, but it's best to play safe. You're

- 25:15he was reporting Paul Forbes to the police. He gave them forbes description and
- 25:18the license number of the Plymouth Forbes was driving. I didn't stay beyond that.
- 25:23Maybe I should have. Maybe I should never have left that house.

- 25:32life. Now here's our star to tell you about tomorrow's intriguing episode of This

- 26:40Roy Rowan speaking welcome back. Well, this is the type of investigation I
- 27:22guess insurance company might want done to prevent something like the whole Ed Julian affair
- 27:30that we heard a couple of weeks back. And of course the doctor's conduct
- 27:33in this case raises all kinds of ethical questions. So the other thing I
- 27:41wonder about is how much insurance is it's changed, because he references this idea
- 27:49that life insurance straight life is not something that people just call to get.
- 27:56But and that may have been true, I think in previous years, but
- 28:03insurance companies had already begun selling through a lot of advertising. Plus I guess
- 28:08in our day we've had a lot of financial experts emerge who recommend and popularize
- 28:17recommending carrying life insurance. So I don't know if this would set off any
- 28:22alarm bells today, But this looks to be a pretty good mystery, and
- 28:29I hope you'll join us on Wednesday when we continue with the Shepherd matter,
- 28:33but tune in tomorrow we will bring you to the amazing mister Malone. Send
