Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / Confronting The Meltdown With STEVE TULIPANA From SEASON TO RISK
Transcript
- 0:17Speaker 1: This is Steve Tulapana.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I am the singer in uh Season two Risk, and
- 0:25Speaker 2: we've got a new album, a new song, a new
- 0:30Speaker 2: single on a new collection of music coming out called
- 0:33Speaker 2: one Meltdown on Record Store Day.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Really excited about it.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Thanks thanks to join us today, buddy.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Yeah, thanks for having me.
- 0:45Speaker 3: My pleasure. So, as you said, Sayson to Risk release
- 0:48Speaker 3: a compilation of sources called One Night hundred Meltdown on
- 0:51Speaker 3: April the twelfth, so it's not too far away, bron.
- 0:53Speaker 3: How do you feel about it?
- 0:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm feeling great about it.
- 0:56Speaker 2: It's like you know, it includes one of the first song,
- 1:01Speaker 2: first original recording we've done in quite some time.
- 1:04Speaker 1: So very excited about how how it came out.
- 1:07Speaker 2: And yeah, it's it's pretty exciting and to be doing
- 1:14Speaker 2: this after quite a bit of time off, you know.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:18Speaker 3: So it's basically just like a retrospective of season Turist's
- 1:21Speaker 3: career from Inceptions now, is it?
- 1:24Speaker 1: No, not really.
- 1:26Speaker 2: It's actually a lot of material that was only either
- 1:31Speaker 2: was non released, was or was released on seven inches.
- 1:39Speaker 1: So that's the bulk of the album, is.
- 1:42Speaker 2: What that is things that are pretty obscure and hard
- 1:46Speaker 2: to find in our collection. And then to two songs
- 1:50Speaker 2: that have been one that's brand new and one that
- 1:54Speaker 2: was was.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Recorded in this century.
- 2:01Speaker 3: That's a good start. It's actually a pretty bold move, mate,
- 2:05Speaker 3: because you haven't had anything out for quite a while.
- 2:08Speaker 3: So normally a band had sort of come back with
- 2:10Speaker 3: the best of because they know it's going to hit
- 2:11Speaker 3: the mark with fans, like something like what you're doing
- 2:14Speaker 3: with some rarities and some sort of long lost songs
- 2:17Speaker 3: like they're all they're not quite as mainstream accepted, I guess,
- 2:21Speaker 3: which is why they're rarety. So it's a very bold
- 2:24Speaker 3: decision to come back with that, mate, I have brought it.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I think we always wanted to, you know, we never
- 2:31Speaker 2: really cared too much about being mainstream. I always wanted
- 2:34Speaker 2: to be a little more experimental and really wanted to
- 2:37Speaker 2: show people that side of what we're doing because it's
- 2:40Speaker 2: informing some of the stuff that we're currently working on.
- 2:43Speaker 1: So I think that's kind of why we wanted to
- 2:45Speaker 1: get it out.
- 2:46Speaker 2: We have been reissuing our old records on vinyl and
- 2:51Speaker 2: remastered here in the States over the last few years,
- 2:54Speaker 2: so that's kind of it's kind of a you know,
- 2:57Speaker 2: a lead up to that.
- 2:58Speaker 3: You know okay, And you mentioned like experimenting, like you
- 3:02Speaker 3: are a band who's experiment a lot with your sound
- 3:04Speaker 3: over the years. So trading all these songs together, but
- 3:08Speaker 3: was it difficult to sort of put them in order
- 3:10Speaker 3: on the album so that they had a tohesin flight room?
- 3:13Speaker 3: I guess because they're all so different.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Yeah, we you know, we actually released a version of
- 3:21Speaker 2: this on cassette only about a year and a half
- 3:25Speaker 2: ago for a little tour we did to Texas and back,
- 3:29Speaker 2: and so we put a lot it's actually a longer
- 3:31Speaker 2: version of it on just a cassette only because that
- 3:35Speaker 2: just I don't know, we're just being weird, I guess.
- 3:37Speaker 2: And this is this is kind of the condensed version
- 3:42Speaker 2: with the new the new material, And yeah, I think, yeah,
- 3:49Speaker 2: I think that's the It's really about all I got
- 3:52Speaker 2: to say on that.
- 3:54Speaker 3: So one of the songs on there is called Undone,
- 3:57Speaker 3: and it was from your scene in the nineteen ninety
- 3:59Speaker 3: four movies Strange Days that was considered too noisy for
- 4:02Speaker 3: the soundtrack. But this is a story I've got to hear.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Yeah, that was a that story is really strange. We
- 4:11Speaker 2: were recording our second record, we were living in New
- 4:15Speaker 2: York City with at Martin Bec's studio recording that second
- 4:19Speaker 2: record for for Columbia Records at the time.
- 4:23Speaker 1: And it's kind of a I don't how much time
- 4:29Speaker 1: I have, but.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Uh, as much as you want, buddy.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Because I can't get sometimes these stories I will tell
- 4:36Speaker 2: and I gotta go yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:41Speaker 1: The uh uh for that film, I don't know if
- 4:46Speaker 1: you're familiar with it.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Juliet Lewis has a band in the film and and
- 4:50Speaker 2: she's she's recording, she's performing these PG Harvey songs while
- 4:54Speaker 2: she had been working in the studio in Los Angeles
- 4:57Speaker 2: at the time, and h the guy, the music director
- 5:01Speaker 2: for the film, was chatting up a mutual friend of
- 5:06Speaker 2: ours that worked in the studio and he was just
- 5:08Speaker 2: saying he was looking for another artist that he wanted
- 5:11Speaker 2: something very apocalyptic, and she sall, I.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Got the perfect band.
- 5:15Speaker 2: They're in the studio right now, shared some of the
- 5:17Speaker 2: record that we were working on for that in a perfect,
- 5:20Speaker 2: perfect World record. In turn, they said, well, we want
- 5:24Speaker 2: an original song, so we wrote something specific for it.
- 5:28Speaker 2: They accepted it sound a contract. In the middle of
- 5:31Speaker 2: recording over there, they flew us out to California and
- 5:34Speaker 2: we spent two weeks on set, and we appear in
- 5:37Speaker 2: the film.
- 5:39Speaker 1: But the song did never get released. It didn't get
- 5:42Speaker 1: added to the.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Soundtrack because it's just if they wanted something apocalyptic and
- 5:46Speaker 2: we delivered it. It's brutal, probably one of the most
- 5:49Speaker 2: brutal things we've ever written, to be honest. So yeah,
- 5:53Speaker 2: so it gets gets to see the light of the day.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Now, what did I think he was too brutal or
- 5:59Speaker 3: what's the reason for isn't it?
- 6:01Speaker 2: I assume they had I mean, the soundtrack had quite
- 6:04Speaker 2: a few acts on it, and I just think I
- 6:06Speaker 2: think it just was.
- 6:08Speaker 1: It just was too brutal.
- 6:10Speaker 3: But I kept you in the movie, but not your music.
- 6:12Speaker 2: The music, the music is in the film, all right, Yes,
- 6:16Speaker 2: it's just not on the the you know, the released soundtrack.
- 6:20Speaker 1: The CD. You know, so that music.
- 6:23Speaker 3: That's pretty cool.
- 6:25Speaker 1: They looped the film.
- 6:26Speaker 2: The song was only two and a half minutes long,
- 6:29Speaker 2: and our scene ended up be longer, so they looped it.
- 6:31Speaker 1: It's almost twice as long.
- 6:33Speaker 3: But it was a trip so cool, and am I
- 6:36Speaker 3: correcting sound that. Over the course of one eight hundred meltdown,
- 6:40Speaker 3: every past and present member of Season two Risk appears
- 6:43Speaker 3: on the least one track.
- 6:46Speaker 2: I well, I think everyone that actually recorded something with us.
- 6:51Speaker 2: We had a few few got cats in there that
- 6:54Speaker 2: ever got a chance to record with us, but we've
- 6:57Speaker 2: had quite a few members over the years.
- 7:01Speaker 3: The dijectually set out to do that to cover everybody
- 7:04Speaker 3: that's recorded with you on the album. Or did you
- 7:06Speaker 3: just work out that way.
- 7:07Speaker 2: I think it just worked out that way. I didn't
- 7:09Speaker 2: even realize it until you mentioned it, So that's cool.
- 7:12Speaker 2: That makes me kind of happy because I don't have
- 7:14Speaker 2: ill will of any We never had any bad drama
- 7:18Speaker 2: in the band. It just kind of circumstances why people
- 7:21Speaker 2: left came to change.
- 7:24Speaker 3: You've spoken a few times about the new song on
- 7:26Speaker 3: the album, which is called Echo Chamber. It's your first
- 7:29Speaker 3: new music in twenty five years of my life. That's
- 7:31Speaker 3: a quarter of a century. Tell us, tell us about
- 7:35Speaker 3: the song.
- 7:38Speaker 2: The song we even over the last year. You know,
- 7:41Speaker 2: we're kind of spread out it across the States. We
- 7:43Speaker 2: don't all live here, and our guitar players as a
- 7:48Speaker 2: killer studio and he that's what he does for a
- 7:50Speaker 2: living in his record bands, and we would get together
- 7:54Speaker 2: to go do you know shows in the region, or
- 7:57Speaker 2: go you know, we always never fully stop. We just
- 8:01Speaker 2: get together do stuff, but we go into the studio
- 8:03Speaker 2: and just kind of jam stuff. And this one, this
- 8:07Speaker 2: particular one, kind of stuck out to us as something
- 8:09Speaker 2: that had potential, so we kept working on it remotely
- 8:12Speaker 2: and adding to it, and.
- 8:16Speaker 1: You know, lyric. You know, in the States, we've.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Gone through some weird political stuff lately, and the world
- 8:23Speaker 2: knows and a lot of that. A lot of what
- 8:27Speaker 2: I've always written about in some of our other records
- 8:30Speaker 2: is about technology and kind of futurism stuff, a little
- 8:37Speaker 2: science fiction thrown in there. You know, literature and film
- 8:43Speaker 2: have always informed me, but also what's currently happening in
- 8:46Speaker 2: the world. And the echo chamber concept was, you know,
- 8:50Speaker 2: kind of just about how social media has kind of
- 8:54Speaker 2: kind of damaged us as a society, and not not
- 8:57Speaker 2: just our country.
- 8:57Speaker 1: I mean, I think the I think you.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Humanity to some degree, and the manipulation of it, and
- 9:07Speaker 2: you know how we don't really have the best view
- 9:13Speaker 2: of what is going on in our world because we
- 9:16Speaker 2: are kind of trapped in our little echo chambers and
- 9:19Speaker 2: are kind of self affirming, you know, loops. You know,
- 9:28Speaker 2: that's really what I was trying to express in that,
- 9:30Speaker 2: you know, and kind of really more the I'm you know,
- 9:35Speaker 2: I let people put their own interpretation of things, let
- 9:40Speaker 2: things speak to them how they will.
- 9:43Speaker 1: I don't like to beat people over.
- 9:44Speaker 2: The head, but I you know, I have my opinions,
- 9:48Speaker 2: but I think the idea is too to reflect on
- 9:54Speaker 2: it and figure out how to to maybe make the
- 9:57Speaker 2: world a little better eventually.
- 10:02Speaker 3: And there's during that song re ignited the Flying I
- 10:04Speaker 3: guess to keep writing.
- 10:05Speaker 1: More new material, Yes, yeah, we have.
- 10:10Speaker 2: We probably have about we are probably close to a
- 10:13Speaker 2: full album worth of music and it needs to be
- 10:20Speaker 2: honed and and defined. We need to find the time
- 10:24Speaker 2: to get into the studio and do it. And that's
- 10:26Speaker 2: really what we want to get this thing out. And
- 10:28Speaker 2: we're doing some dates here in the States in April
- 10:31Speaker 2: to support that, and then we we're looking at some options.
- 10:36Speaker 2: We never got to go overseas for any of the
- 10:44Speaker 2: in the past. And the records, the Columbia Records are
- 10:49Speaker 2: being reissued. I can't I can't say what label yet,
- 10:53Speaker 2: but they will be reissued, remastered. There are remastered, and
- 10:56Speaker 2: they'll be reissued in the next over the next twelve months.
- 11:01Speaker 2: So we're hoping to see that see the light of
- 11:04Speaker 2: day and push us to.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Do more nice and within new music. Like what direction
- 11:09Speaker 3: has it take? Like, as we said before, you've done
- 11:11Speaker 3: a lot of experimenting in your time as a band,
- 11:13Speaker 3: but you've had twenty five years without writing new material together,
- 11:17Speaker 3: so you have obviously probably gone in different directions again
- 11:21Speaker 3: since you since you last rite together. So this new material,
- 11:23Speaker 3: what shape has it taken?
- 11:25Speaker 2: I think I think, well, Billy Smith who's the bass player,
- 11:34Speaker 2: and and the other second guitar player, Wade Williams and
- 11:38Speaker 2: I we've done a project together, several different projects over
- 11:41Speaker 2: the years. Dwayne and I are still very close and
- 11:45Speaker 2: and his his side projects. We've toured together, and we
- 11:52Speaker 2: all still kind of I think my live in the
- 11:56Speaker 2: same mindset and the same kind of influences still kind
- 12:00Speaker 2: of around and we're always we're both we're we all
- 12:04Speaker 2: still working in the music world. So raw he's constantly sharing,
- 12:08Speaker 2: you know stuff, and I think the Echo Chamber and
- 12:12Speaker 2: the newer stuff it is it really is a continuation
- 12:15Speaker 2: of what we did on The Shattering that came out
- 12:18Speaker 2: in two thousand and one, and that record, I think
- 12:22Speaker 2: was in my mind was a bit ahead of its time,
- 12:25Speaker 2: came out at a very weird time between uh CD
- 12:31Speaker 2: and streaming hadn't really started yet, and it was just
- 12:34Speaker 2: kind of starting.
- 12:35Speaker 1: And and again it was.
- 12:39Speaker 2: You know, we worked with Bill Stevenson from The Descendants
- 12:43Speaker 2: on that record and at his studio and they were
- 12:47Speaker 2: just I think they just really nailed the sound. And
- 12:50Speaker 2: I think we're kind of it's a continuation of that
- 12:52Speaker 2: just happened to take a long time.
- 12:58Speaker 3: How before that, you guys, Steve, I've got any segment
- 13:00Speaker 3: of introduced called foto Bomb And so basically before we speak,
- 13:04Speaker 3: I've gone through controlled your social media. I've come up
- 13:06Speaker 3: with some fightos that I want to know a bit
- 13:08Speaker 3: more about. We'll start with this one. What happened he
- 13:13Speaker 3: did the radiot is Springing Lake or something.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Yeah, so that is Dwayne, and that is we had
- 13:22Speaker 2: a recording studio on the west side of town and
- 13:28Speaker 2: that was right behind it and it flooded. It went
- 13:31Speaker 2: about another three feet higher than that.
- 13:34Speaker 1: He was there.
- 13:36Speaker 2: They just did that snapshot, you know, but it was
- 13:39Speaker 2: kind of tragic and we lost our whole recording studio,
- 13:42Speaker 2: We lost our master tapes. It was pretty tragic. But yeah,
- 13:47Speaker 2: he's you know, you kind of have to be take
- 13:50Speaker 2: a little clown when you're dealing with that kind of shit.
- 13:54Speaker 3: I'm taking it. He didn't drive it out of that.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Then that wasn't even his car, it was just a
- 13:58Speaker 2: car across the Yeah.
- 14:02Speaker 3: So, and then I found this one like, oh, how
- 14:05Speaker 3: did you get up here? And then importantly how did
- 14:07Speaker 3: you get down? Oh?
- 14:10Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 14:11Speaker 2: That Uh I was I'm I'm not a surprise as
- 14:15Speaker 2: I used to be. So I don't know if that
- 14:17Speaker 2: will be happening on this new tour. But uh, I
- 14:20Speaker 2: used to always climb all over shit.
- 14:22Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 14:23Speaker 2: I think I was just pure ajournaline and alcohol usually, and.
- 14:28Speaker 1: I think I came down by uh uh, probably just
- 14:33Speaker 1: fell on some people's faces.
- 14:34Speaker 3: I don't know. Benny Side, he used to climb myself.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Did ever go pearshak? Did you ever fall off?
- 14:40Speaker 2: For Oh?
- 14:41Speaker 1: Oh, I had some tragic tragic fails. Uh yeah, I
- 14:46Speaker 1: wiped out. Uh. This was just a few years ago.
- 14:49Speaker 2: We were in Texas for the No Coast Music Fest
- 14:54Speaker 2: and I I thought there was a wall behind the
- 14:56Speaker 2: curtain and there was not, and I totally just took
- 14:58Speaker 2: out the whole fucking good tar rigging and I was
- 15:02Speaker 2: pretty Uh, I don't know, I kind of lose myself
- 15:06Speaker 2: when I when that when the ship starts pumbling, and
- 15:09Speaker 2: I just kind of go a little ape ship and
- 15:12Speaker 2: sometimes it doesn't.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Turn ship all right, Stable, Thanks very much for you
- 15:20Speaker 3: talk me. It's been a pleasure speaking with you. One
- 15:22Speaker 3: eight hundred meltdown from Season to Risk is at April twelve.
- 15:25Speaker 3: The boys are headed out across the States for a
- 15:27Speaker 3: bit of a draw, and I'm pretty sure we're gonna
- 15:29Speaker 3: hear more stuff from you in the near future, like.
- 16:04Speaker 4: A sham yelling well, shamber straight to him?
- 16:26Speaker 5: Why good bye the TV? This banadasis and is kidding
- 16:31Speaker 5: me to scresimber already lies FLEs psychoing back and toms because.
- 16:41Speaker 4: Churn shoes. Why way, I'm shy, way I am waiting.
- 16:55Speaker 5: I'm chilling like I'm shows channing, Joe.
- 17:08Speaker 4: It's God, spare dat. I go now, I Shamer say.
- 17:41Speaker 5: I go, I go, Shamer safe for.
- 17:57Speaker 2: I can sell the other sens says today waiting in
- 18:04Speaker 2: the polls.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Shop, I want you my d shames Jai.
- 18:33Speaker 5: Walking sing out this second shame rain.
- 19:07Speaker 4: The window up, Nobo
