- 0:16Speaker 2: Proving we can all agree on something. I guess the
- 0:18Speaker 2: Nets and Labor have joined to speed up the process
- 0:20Speaker 2: of modern slavery Members Bill now the keys that's some
- 0:23Speaker 2: members bill. Essentially, it forces large businesses to report how
- 0:26Speaker 2: they identify and managed slavery risks in their supply chains.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Greg Fleming is the national impid charge of this particular
- 0:31Speaker 2: builders with us, Greg morning, good morning you in complete
- 0:35Speaker 2: alignment or is it all in the detail?
- 0:38Speaker 3: Pretty much in alignment, but there will be a bunch
- 0:41Speaker 3: of detail threasts out at the Select committee stage, which
- 0:44Speaker 3: hopefully we'll get in too.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Fast just to explain people but without boring them because
- 0:48Speaker 2: it's a members' bill process, no time debate, speed of bill,
- 0:51Speaker 2: et cetera. If you can get the sixty one on board,
- 0:54Speaker 2: we're in business. That's how it works, right, It's correct.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Yeah, just basically means that we skip the biscuit tin.
- 1:00Speaker 3: It also means that we ask the Business Committee to
- 1:02Speaker 3: throw us up to the top of the order paper,
- 1:03Speaker 3: which means we should be able to heir first, reading
- 1:06Speaker 3: first Member's Day about two and a half weeks, we'll
- 1:08Speaker 3: go for a hopefully a shortened Select Committy process, and
- 1:11Speaker 3: the aimers that we'll be able to have this in
- 1:13Speaker 3: law by a sort of third quarter.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Do you understand ax objection?
- 1:18Speaker 3: I sure do. Yeah. Yeah. So I've been working on
- 1:20Speaker 3: this for several years, and in part of that, I've
- 1:23Speaker 3: done and of consultation with businesses that will be affected
- 1:27Speaker 3: by this, and I do hear their concerns, and I'm
- 1:30Speaker 3: certainly not a fan of regular business regulation for the
- 1:33Speaker 3: sake of regulation. So what we've done is taking a
- 1:36Speaker 3: lot of learnings from overseas experience, particularly in Australia, because
- 1:39Speaker 3: they've been at this for about seven or eight years
- 1:41Speaker 3: now and have had a substantive review quite recently. And
- 1:45Speaker 3: so we're going to be going with templateforms in the
- 1:47Speaker 3: light just to ensure this really does add value rather
- 1:49Speaker 3: than just cost.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Well, see, this is the weird thing. It seems esoteric
- 1:53Speaker 2: to me. I mean, so you go to the warehouse,
- 1:54Speaker 2: how far down the chain, how many countries, how many
- 1:56Speaker 2: factories do they need to explore to convince the authorities
- 2:00Speaker 2: whoever they are, that there isn't modern slavery and the
- 2:02Speaker 2: Air five dollars ninety nine t shirt.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Well, it's about getting businesses actually looking at it. So
- 2:07Speaker 3: a lot of responsible businesses already are in which case
- 2:10Speaker 3: this is actually going to be quite a simple process
- 2:12Speaker 3: for them. It's like any kind of frameworks in law,
- 2:15Speaker 3: it's always aimed at those the reculcitrants. And so you
- 2:19Speaker 3: just create a culture within a business where this is
- 2:21Speaker 3: actually something that they take account of when they are
- 2:24Speaker 3: setting out and renewing their supply chains.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Who's enforcing it?
- 2:29Speaker 3: This will sit within MB and then the commissioner role
- 2:36Speaker 3: will sit within the Human Rights Commission.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Good on you, n Ie, talk to you, Greg Greb
- 2:39Speaker 2: Fleming Modern So it's good. It's it's got social media
- 2:44Speaker 2: band written all over it, hasn't it. You'll feel good
- 2:47Speaker 2: on a Friday night at the pub with your mate too.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Look what I did in reality does at work. I
- 2:51Speaker 2: wouldn't have thought. It stands a.
