- 1:14All right, everyone, welcome to Inspirations for Your
- 1:17Life.
- 1:18It is so great to have you here.
- 1:20The weekly topic is seeing clearly, and we're
- 1:23not just talking with our two eyes, right?
- 1:26When your vision sharpens, your decisions improve, and
- 1:31this week's focus is on learning to see
- 1:33and actually experience things clearly and deeper, and
- 1:37think that way, and act with courage and
- 1:40live with integrity and purpose.
- 1:41Strong lives are built when awareness replaces assumption
- 1:45and intentional choice replaces, yes, drift.
- 1:50So how to choose well is what we're
- 1:53basically about.
- 1:54I'm John C.
- 1:55Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 1:59podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student, and
- 2:03a passionate lifelong learner, and pretty soon, guys,
- 2:06yes, a published author.
- 2:07Yeah.
- 2:08Welcome to Inspirations for Your Life.
- 2:10This is all about seeing clearly, developing clarity
- 2:14in thought, courage in action, and integrity in
- 2:18your choices.
- 2:19Today's episode focuses on practical strategies to make
- 2:23decisions better, to build discipline and create momentum
- 2:28in your personal and your professional life.
- 2:31So better choices build stronger lives.
- 2:35Did you know that?
- 2:35Yes, they do.
- 2:36Every intentional decision compounds.
- 2:40That's right, guys, the impact.
- 2:42Discipline improves outcomes.
- 2:45Focus fuels consistent results.
- 2:47Consistent habits build progress.
- 2:49Repeat effort multiplies over time.
- 2:52Values guide decisions.
- 2:55Aligning action with principles ensures true purpose.
- 2:59Strong standards strengthen character.
- 3:01Integrity is the foundation of our leadership.
- 3:06Discipline, ladies and gentlemen, yes, it builds freedom.
- 3:11Structure gives autonomy.
- 3:14So discipline builds freedom.
- 3:16Structure gives it autonomy.
- 3:18Better choices reduce regret, guys.
- 3:23Proactive decisions protect future opportunities.
- 3:26Consistency, well, it builds trust.
- 3:31Reliability amplifies the influence.
- 3:33Good habits strengthen success.
- 3:36Routine choices create momentum.
- 3:39Smart decisions build momentum.
- 3:43Deliberate action moves the needle.
- 3:45We've talked about the needle before.
- 3:46I'm talking about the meter, right?
- 3:48Everybody measures things with a meter.
- 3:50Now we have digital meters, but we used
- 3:51to talk about a needle and how much
- 3:53the needle would be affected this way or
- 3:55that way.
- 3:55So discipline fuels progress.
- 3:58Steady effort outpaces the burst of motivation.
- 4:02Value creates direction.
- 4:05Clarity of purpose simplifies action.
- 4:09Consistency builds reliability.
- 4:12Dependability is earned through reputation.
- 4:15Better habits build better days.
- 4:18Small wins create life-changing results.
- 4:22That's right, guys.
- 4:22Discipline improves results.
- 4:26Structured approaches deliver measurable outcomes.
- 4:29Value strengthens leadership.
- 4:32Ethical choices inspire trust and, yes, followership.
- 4:37Strong decisions create stability.
- 4:40Confidence emerges from intentional action.
- 4:44Consistent effort fuels progress.
- 4:46Daily execution compounds our success.
- 4:50I think that's an important thing to understand.
- 4:51Smart choices guide strength and momentum.
- 4:54Intentionality builds randomness.
- 4:58Discipline improves performance.
- 5:01Focus drives the capability.
- 5:04More importantly, your peak performance capability.
- 5:07Clear values guide action.
- 5:10Alignment ensures meaningful results.
- 5:13Good habits support growth.
- 5:16Repeated positive behaviors expand your potential.
- 5:19Consistency strengthens success.
- 5:23Discipline reinforces every win.
- 5:26Discipline fuels achievement.
- 5:28Structured execution turns vision into reality.
- 5:33Strong standards guide choices.
- 5:35Principal decisions protect integrity.
- 5:38Better decisions strengthen futures.
- 5:41Foresight prevents setbacks.
- 5:43Values shape identity.
- 5:46Who you are is defined by what you
- 5:48uphold.
- 5:49Consistent effort builds strength.
- 5:51Resilience comes from daily practice.
- 5:54Smart choices improve outcomes.
- 5:56Strategy maximizes effectiveness.
- 6:00Choose wisely.
- 6:03That's my message for you.
- 6:04Your deliberate action today sets tomorrow's trajectory.
- 6:12I think when we think about trajectory and
- 6:15we think about tomorrow and we think about
- 6:17pace and we think about being well, a
- 6:19lot of people focus on the fact of
- 6:23what they did in the past.
- 6:25And you might say, well, John, that's what
- 6:27I do.
- 6:28But your past does not have to equal
- 6:31your future.
- 6:31It doesn't.
- 6:32See, if you change your life, if you
- 6:36change your thoughts, your past will not equal
- 6:40your future.
- 6:42Your thoughts create your reality.
- 6:45Did you know that?
- 6:46Your thoughts create reality.
- 6:48And when we think about reality, right?
- 6:52It's not something in a far distant place.
- 6:56Reality is what you're seeing, you're hearing, you're
- 7:00touching, you're smelling outside of your body.
- 7:04That is reality, okay?
- 7:07Reality is not some thing somewhere.
- 7:11It's not some mystical TV show or place.
- 7:17It's what you experience outside of your human
- 7:20body.
- 7:21That is reality.
- 7:24Now, here's the truth, guys.
- 7:26Your mind, oftentimes, 99.9% times or
- 7:31more, cannot tell whether it's reality or whether
- 7:38you're imagining something.
- 7:39So when you imagine something, your reality that
- 7:45you are in, notices things like muscles contracting.
- 7:52So they've done studies with athletes and they've
- 7:57done meditations.
- 7:58And when they've done this, they've noticed the
- 8:00same muscles contracting when they imagined it, just
- 8:08as if they actually did it.
- 8:10So that means that our brains are pretty
- 8:16intelligent.
- 8:16And because they're very intelligent, they can interpret
- 8:23a program.
- 8:25And when they do that, that program that
- 8:28you give it or other people give it,
- 8:30it causes a state change.
- 8:33I think when we say the word choose,
- 8:38the biggest thing that comes to mind is
- 8:40how, why, when, where, those do come up
- 8:49when we choose.
- 8:50If I said to you, what type of
- 8:53ice cream do you enjoy?
- 8:55Is it vanilla?
- 8:57I know I'm gonna get you hungry now.
- 8:59Is it chocolate?
- 9:02Is it butter pecan?
- 9:05Is it pistachio?
- 9:08Is it chocolate chip mint?
- 9:10Is it Oreo mint?
- 9:13Is it peanut butter?
- 9:16Is it fudge?
- 9:19Is it Rocky Road?
- 9:25Chocolate chip mint?
- 9:29Thinking about those flavors, I bet your palate
- 9:33is already watering just by me saying that.
- 9:37So when we go to a place to
- 9:40get ice cream, we go there cause we
- 9:43want ice cream, right?
- 9:44That's why we're there.
- 9:45So we're gonna choose a flavor.
- 9:48Most people are gonna choose something they've already
- 9:51chosen before and they've been happy with.
- 9:55Some people will try something different.
- 9:5990% of the time I go to
- 10:00get ice cream, I will have a flavor
- 10:02that I've had before and I've had many
- 10:04flavors before.
- 10:06Sometimes there'll be a new flavor.
- 10:07I'm like, hmm, I wanna try that.
- 10:10And I say, could I have a sample?
- 10:11And they'll give me a little spoon with
- 10:12a pretty big helping of it.
- 10:14And hmm, not bad.
- 10:18Let me just take the chocolate chip mint
- 10:20then.
- 10:21Oh, you don't want this?
- 10:22No, I don't want that.
- 10:23So our choice gets made by a couple
- 10:27of things.
- 10:28The color, the texture, the taste, and even
- 10:32the smell.
- 10:34That's right guys, even the smell.
- 10:36So that's how we choose.
- 10:40We choose this way because we don't want
- 10:44to have ice cream that we're unhappy with
- 10:47and waste money.
- 10:50So we think about what flavor we would
- 10:54like to enjoy.
- 10:57We might think about the size first.
- 11:00Typically, is it gonna be a cone or
- 11:03cup?
- 11:04If I'm getting a twist, like a black
- 11:07and white, I typically will get it in
- 11:10a small cone.
- 11:11Now you might say, John, what's the difference?
- 11:13Small, medium, large?
- 11:14I find that I'd rather have some ice
- 11:17cream than a lot of ice cream.
- 11:18I just need a taste.
- 11:20I don't need to have anything bigger than
- 11:22a medium, right?
- 11:23Or let's say a small.
- 11:25So there's a kid size, there's a small,
- 11:27and once in a while I'll get the
- 11:28medium.
- 11:30And so I choose between the cone and
- 11:33the cup, but sometimes people have the cone,
- 11:36the waffle cone, and the cup.
- 11:39Now you have to choose from, well, do
- 11:42you want the cone, the waffle cone, or
- 11:44the cup?
- 11:46And so you still have to choose size
- 11:49a lot of times.
- 11:49Sometimes there's a small and a large in
- 11:50each.
- 11:51With the waffle cone, it's just grande.
- 11:53I mean, it's just one size.
- 11:54And with the waffle cone, it's like you're
- 11:56eating a meal.
- 11:57I mean, I don't know how many scoops.
- 11:59I get they probably put in like, I'm
- 12:01guessing three or four scoops of ice cream
- 12:04in there.
- 12:05That's a lot of calories.
- 12:09And when you think about the cup, different
- 12:13things go through your mind.
- 12:15Well, do I want the cone?
- 12:22Well, I don't wanna get all over myself
- 12:24and I'm afraid that if I get the
- 12:26cone, it's gonna go all over myself because
- 12:28I'm wearing my favorite shirt.
- 12:31So you 86 or forget about the cones,
- 12:35is the waffle cone and the regular cone.
- 12:39And you get it in a cup, kids,
- 12:44small, medium, large, whatever.
- 12:46And when you get that cup, the ice
- 12:49cream goes in there and then maybe you
- 12:50get a topping, right?
- 12:53What kind of topping do you want?
- 12:55Do you want sprinkles?
- 12:56Do you want colored sprinkles?
- 12:58Do you want, I really like hot fudge.
- 12:59Do you just want syrup?
- 13:01Do you want marshmallow on the top?
- 13:04I usually don't want that.
- 13:05I never liked that.
- 13:06Do you want nuts?
- 13:09As long as you're not allergic to nuts.
- 13:11And then they give you the spoon.
- 13:14Some places even ask you, do you want
- 13:17the small spoon?
- 13:18Do you like the real short spoon or
- 13:19you want the real big spoon?
- 13:22And then you sit down and you take
- 13:25a moment, get your napkin ready.
- 13:28You put your napkin on your lap or
- 13:30shirt and you start to enjoy the ice
- 13:33cream.
- 13:36And then you realize that your time in
- 13:40not rushing to choose the flavor was actually
- 13:43well worth the investment.
- 13:46And you enjoy the ice cream and chances
- 13:49are you're probably gonna come back for more
- 13:49ice cream.
- 13:50So that's one kind of choice.
- 13:53We can make another kind of choice.
- 13:56Let's call it a friendship choice.
- 13:59So you've got two or three friends.
- 14:01One wants you to go with them to,
- 14:05I don't know, the racetrack.
- 14:07Another wants you to go with them to
- 14:09the football game.
- 14:10Another one wants you to go to them
- 14:13with, I don't know, going to the beach.
- 14:16So you got the beach, you got the
- 14:18football game, right?
- 14:22And the racetrack.
- 14:23Let's stick with those three.
- 14:26How do you choose which one you go
- 14:30to?
- 14:31Well, some people try to figure out if
- 14:32they can fit it in the same time
- 14:34and that usually doesn't work.
- 14:38Do you like race cars?
- 14:40Yes or no.
- 14:41Do you like football games?
- 14:42What do you like more?
- 14:43Now, if you like all of them the
- 14:45same amount, this becomes a real conundrum.
- 14:48How do you choose?
- 14:50They're all good friends of yours and you
- 14:53don't wanna disappoint any one of them.
- 14:57You might say something like, hey, I got
- 15:01a pick, right?
- 15:03And next we've got to pick again in
- 15:05the following week.
- 15:05So I'm gonna pick one of you today
- 15:08and next we're gonna pick another.
- 15:10So I'm gonna pick all of you within
- 15:12the next couple of weeks but today I
- 15:15can only pick one.
- 15:18And I don't know, the race car seems
- 15:21kind of exciting.
- 15:22Haven't done that in a while.
- 15:23So I choose to go with Mark and
- 15:26go to the racetrack.
- 15:27Now, what I didn't tell you about the
- 15:28racetrack is you're actually gonna be racing the
- 15:31cars.
- 15:31So it's not like a big Grand Prix
- 15:34but it's a pretty high-end car that's
- 15:38on a track.
- 15:39It's not like the cars that you see,
- 15:41like I said, at the Evel Knievel type
- 15:43thing, but it is a car.
- 15:49And I think when you made that choice,
- 15:52a lot was going through your head.
- 15:55I know what was going through my head
- 15:57was, well, gee, I don't wanna disappoint any
- 15:59of my friends but I already got that
- 16:02out of the way.
- 16:02It's like, well, what would be kind of
- 16:05fun tonight?
- 16:05What would be different?
- 16:07Something I haven't done in a while.
- 16:08I haven't raced in a race car in
- 16:10a while.
- 16:11So I do that.
- 16:13And that choice is coming to us not
- 16:17so much by our core values or our
- 16:19moral values, the ice cream, I should say,
- 16:22but this choice is coming to us based
- 16:26on the type of fun we wanna enjoy,
- 16:30the experience we want.
- 16:31Was the ice cream similar?
- 16:33It was, but the ice cream was more
- 16:35about not making a mess and also the
- 16:38taste.
- 16:40It wasn't about whose company I was gonna
- 16:42be with or the experience that I was
- 16:44gonna be partaking in.
- 16:47Let's talk about another choice.
- 16:52You're getting ready for your midterm or your
- 16:54final.
- 16:55You decide that you're gonna wait to the
- 16:58last minute to study.
- 16:58Now, maybe you didn't study at all before.
- 17:01I'm not saying you can't stay the night
- 17:02before because tomorrow's my midterm, but you still
- 17:06have to realize what that means.
- 17:10It means that you are making a choice.
- 17:15And sometimes the choice we make doesn't seem
- 17:19like a great choice right now.
- 17:21Like your friends ask you to go hang
- 17:24with them, but you need to study.
- 17:27You might say, John, this happens more in
- 17:29college as an undergraduate.
- 17:32You're right, but it could happen as a
- 17:33graduate student.
- 17:35And so the choice that you make is
- 17:39about the situation at hand.
- 17:42That's what a lot of people do.
- 17:44And that's short-term gratification.
- 17:45I wanna go to the milk bar and
- 17:48have ice cream.
- 17:49I wanna go here and have a steak.
- 17:51I wanna go over here and go roller
- 17:52skating or what have you.
- 17:55That's the short-term gratification.
- 17:57What I'm not doing is looking at the
- 17:59long-term gratification.
- 18:00The fact that, yes, it's gonna be a
- 18:01little challenging.
- 18:02I'm gonna have to do these things, but
- 18:04guess what?
- 18:05What?
- 18:07I'm gonna get an A on my test.
- 18:12That long-term gratification is worth delaying the
- 18:17gratification.
- 18:18A lot of people can't delay because like,
- 18:20oh, I gotta have it now, gotta have
- 18:21it now, gotta have it now, gotta have
- 18:22it now.
- 18:23We live in a now world.
- 18:25But can we just stop for just one
- 18:28moment?
- 18:28Can we silence our phones for just one
- 18:31moment?
- 18:32Can we do that?
- 18:32Can we silence our phones?
- 18:34Most people can't.
- 18:37They've gotta have constant stimulation.
- 18:39And I think the body and the mind
- 18:41need a break.
- 18:43They definitely need a break.
- 18:48And if we understand that, then we'll treat
- 18:52our body in a certain way.
- 18:54I wanna give you another choice.
- 18:57And this choice is a choice that's not
- 19:02so easy to think about.
- 19:07You're in a public place and the lockdown
- 19:15alarms have suddenly sounded.
- 19:21A little scary.
- 19:24They sounded because there is a gunman in
- 19:30the building and they figure it's safer to
- 19:34lock everybody in the building with them than
- 19:38try to let that person out.
- 19:39I don't know where they get this mentality
- 19:41from.
- 19:42And everybody else has to kind of, you
- 19:44remember the run, hide or fight.
- 19:49So my choice to you is this.
- 19:52What do you choose first?
- 19:54Do you choose to run?
- 19:55Do you choose to hide?
- 19:56Do you choose to fight?
- 19:57You should choose to run right away.
- 20:00But then you might say to me, John,
- 20:02I'm trying to escape, but I can't.
- 20:05I have to jump out of a window.
- 20:14No, I'd never take a jump out of
- 20:15a window.
- 20:17But somebody is after your life and you're
- 20:21a little scared about jumping out of the
- 20:23window or jumping off that higher piece.
- 20:27It's better to take that risk, possibly break
- 20:31a leg.
- 20:31I'm not saying you should, but if you
- 20:33do that, you'll be alive because you don't
- 20:36know if that person is gonna come after
- 20:38you.
- 20:38So the choices we make when our wealth
- 20:42or our health are at stake are different.
- 20:46They're different kinds of choices.
- 20:47I mean, first we talked about ice cream
- 20:48choices.
- 20:49That's fun.
- 20:50We talked about where we wanna go for
- 20:52fun with our friends.
- 20:54And now we're talking about something that's pretty
- 20:55serious.
- 20:59Person's on the run of the building and
- 21:02you're just there, locked in a classroom, locked
- 21:07in a boardroom, locked in an office, maybe
- 21:11several floors up.
- 21:14The gunman's on the first floor, somewhere on
- 21:17the first floor.
- 21:21Security's watching him on cameras and they've locked
- 21:26the building down pretty much.
- 21:30But that doesn't mean he can't get up
- 21:33the floors.
- 21:36It doesn't mean that you're safe on the
- 21:39fourth floor, the fifth floor.
- 21:40You don't know what floor he's gonna go
- 21:42to.
- 21:46What I didn't tell you is just before
- 21:48this all happened, a whole flood of people
- 21:50left the building and got out just before
- 21:55the doors locked and everybody else is stuck
- 22:00in the building.
- 22:02Very silent, waiting on bated breath, taking their
- 22:08time to figure out while they're just waiting
- 22:12impatiently.
- 22:14Some people are trying to figure out how
- 22:17do they hide themselves?
- 22:18Where do they block in?
- 22:20The building might be four stories.
- 22:22We're not talking about a building that has
- 22:24like 10 million offices.
- 22:26We're talking about a building with four stories
- 22:29and maybe each floor has 10 offices.
- 22:32Maybe each office has 10,000 square feet.
- 22:37It's not a lot of area and somebody
- 22:40like that could easily cover that in several
- 22:42hours.
- 22:46So you're in your office that you work
- 22:49in and you're in the conference room and
- 22:57you've got things behind the door trying to
- 23:03keep it safe.
- 23:04And on the right is a great big
- 23:06window.
- 23:08And this is four stories.
- 23:12Your opportunity to run is gone.
- 23:14You missed that window.
- 23:16It was only first come first serve and
- 23:18you couldn't get out in time and then
- 23:19bam, everything locked.
- 23:23You can't run, you're hiding.
- 23:30There's a window out there.
- 23:33It's four stories to the bottom.
- 23:36What makes you have the decision to stay
- 23:40or potentially jump out?
- 23:41Well, if I jump out, I might break
- 23:42my leg.
- 23:44If you stay and he gets to your
- 23:45floor, you might not live.
- 23:49Now, in the unlikely event that the person
- 23:54actually gets to your floor, then it's time
- 23:59to basically fight.
- 24:01Now, nobody really wants to fight, ladies and
- 24:04gentlemen.
- 24:04Nobody wants to fight, nobody.
- 24:07But you gotta defend yourself.
- 24:09You gotta protect yourself.
- 24:11So you start looking for things that could
- 24:13be weapons, could be a fire extinguisher, could
- 24:15be anything.
- 24:16And anything that could be used in that
- 24:17office to protect yourself.
- 24:22It's not something we wanna think about, but
- 24:24I wanted to share these different types of
- 24:27choosings because that's what they are.
- 24:31The last one I'm gonna give you is
- 24:33you're in a supermarket.
- 24:35You're just trying to make a choice.
- 24:38Do I go with the Twizzlers?
- 24:40Do I go with the Dum Dums?
- 24:43Do I go with the Hershey Kisses?
- 24:45Or do I go with something else, like
- 24:52maybe Sour Patch?
- 24:56You're probably gonna be replaying what each candy
- 25:00tastes like in your mind, similar to what
- 25:01you do with the ice cream.
- 25:02But you're not gonna spend as much time
- 25:05because you just wanna get the pack and
- 25:07leave.
- 25:09Our choice algorithm is different for each state,
- 25:17each type of environment we're in.
- 25:21Many people choose something just to get it
- 25:25over with.
- 25:26They don't realize that the choice shouldn't be
- 25:33rushed.
- 25:34There's no need to rush the choice.
- 25:37But other people put fear in others, false
- 25:40evidence appearing real, to chase, to rush.
- 25:45No need for that.
- 25:48So choosing well, choosing good food, nutrition, that's
- 25:55another type of choice.
- 25:57So we have, oh gosh, so many different
- 26:00choices in our life.
- 26:01We have so much freedom.
- 26:03We have so many different ways we can
- 26:04go.
- 26:05But a lot of people don't understand this.
- 26:07And so you know what happens?
- 26:09They just choose wrongly.
- 26:12And they don't think it's gonna make a
- 26:14big difference.
- 26:15Ah, I chose chocolate today.
- 26:17Maybe not.
- 26:19But one choice might make a difference.
- 26:22Like which account has the best interest?
- 26:25There's different types of choices.
- 26:27And what I'm trying to get out is
- 26:28we choose well by seeing, hearing, touching, feeling,
- 26:32experiencing what's going on.
- 26:35And if we have information from the past
- 26:40about a situation that was similar, we're gonna
- 26:42replay that in our mind to help us
- 26:44make the right decision.
- 26:50The right decision.
- 26:51Now, the right decision may not be right
- 26:53or wrong, but to us, it's right.
- 26:56Meaning right that it's the best for me
- 27:01at the time.
