- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Mario Chalmers.
- 0:02Speaker 2: I'd be here before I know what to do.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Twenty thirteen NBA champion with the Miami Heat. Okay, he's
- 0:11Speaker 1: going to take you through their entire championship run. Presented
- 0:15Speaker 1: by a state farm. Fresh off their twenty twelve NBA championship,
- 0:21Speaker 1: the Miami Heat entered the twenty twelve to thirteen season
- 0:24Speaker 1: with one goal win it again. They opened the season
- 0:27Speaker 1: twenty and six, but cracks began to show during a
- 0:30Speaker 1: rough stretch on the road, where they dropped seven of
- 0:32Speaker 1: ten games. Searching for answers against bigger front courts, Miami
- 0:36Speaker 1: signed Chris Birdman Anderson. With Birdman in the lineup, the
- 0:40Speaker 1: Heat went thirty nine and three for the remainder of
- 0:43Speaker 1: this season. Lebron won five straight Eastern Conference Player of
- 0:47Speaker 1: the Month awards, and by midseason, the MVP race already
- 0:50Speaker 1: felt over. Out of the All Star Break, the Heat's
- 0:53Speaker 1: dominance intensified. To put it simply, they couldn't lose. They
- 0:58Speaker 1: ended up winning twenty seven straight games, the third longest
- 1:01Speaker 1: streak in NBA history. They finished the season sixty six
- 1:05Speaker 1: and sixteen, the best record in the league and a
- 1:07Speaker 1: new franchise higher wins, but for Miami, none of it
- 1:11Speaker 1: meant anything without another.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Rain going to the playoffs. We knew it was a mindset.
- 1:19Speaker 3: It's always a different season, you know, especially with coach
- 1:21Speaker 3: Bow and pat Riley, They're never gonna let you relax.
- 1:24Speaker 3: My role this twenty thirteen team was to play defense,
- 1:27Speaker 3: knockdown shots, and try to control not say the tempers,
- 1:32Speaker 3: but the egos that come with being Hall of famers
- 1:36Speaker 3: and the players that you know I had on my team.
- 1:39Speaker 3: What I remember from the first threes about the Bucks,
- 1:41Speaker 3: I just remember Brandon Jenny's doing an interview saying that
- 1:43Speaker 3: they was going to beat us. So that was a
- 1:45Speaker 3: little like kind of shocking to hear him say that
- 1:48Speaker 3: knowing that they can't beat us, and then it was
- 1:51Speaker 3: an easy sweep. We established control that says just by
- 1:53Speaker 3: paint dominance. We had a big wing line up with
- 1:56Speaker 3: a small big line with that, we had a smatch
- 2:00Speaker 3: would either Broad or d Wade or CB that we
- 2:02Speaker 3: had spaces on a floid at a shoot, so you
- 2:05Speaker 3: couldn't just focus on or a load to paint with
- 2:06Speaker 3: just one of those guys when they drive the heat.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Controlled games one through four against Milwaukee, completing the first
- 2:12Speaker 1: sweep of the Big Three era. Next up the Chicago Bulls,
- 2:17Speaker 1: the same team that ended the Heat's historic regular season
- 2:21Speaker 1: street Game one brought Miami its first real test of
- 2:24Speaker 1: the postseason. Nate Robinson and Jimmy Butler, in his sophomore season,
- 2:28Speaker 1: combined for forty eight points. The Chicago stunned the Heat
- 2:31Speaker 1: on their home floor, but the Heat bounced back, winning
- 2:34Speaker 1: the next four to advance to their third straight Eastern
- 2:37Speaker 1: Conference Finals. Their opponent, the Indiana Pacers. Game one was
- 2:43Speaker 1: neck and neck. Neither team could create real separation the
- 2:46Speaker 1: devisit never growing beyond five points. Miami appeared to have
- 2:50Speaker 1: control late after taking a three point lead with eleven
- 2:52Speaker 1: seconds for maining, but Paul George answered with a game
- 2:55Speaker 1: tying three, which is zo point seven seconds left, sending
- 2:59Speaker 1: the game to overtime. And in overtime, with the game
- 3:02Speaker 1: hanging on a single possession, Lebron James attacked the rim
- 3:05Speaker 1: for a layup that stealed miami It's one hundred and
- 3:07Speaker 1: three to one hundred two victory. Well, Lebron's aeroics became
- 3:10Speaker 1: the biggest story. Another piece of Miami's rotation was quietly
- 3:14Speaker 1: changing the series. Chris Birdman. Anderson was slawless in Game one,
- 3:19Speaker 1: scoring sixteen points on a perfect seven for seven shooting
- 3:23Speaker 1: in just eighteen minutes off the bench, and his brilliance
- 3:27Speaker 1: didn't stop there. He only missed two field goals in
- 3:30Speaker 1: the entire series.
- 3:34Speaker 3: He gets an end of the game and you're like, oh,
- 3:36Speaker 3: burd w seve for seven oh eight for eight, But
- 3:39Speaker 3: with bird is.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Not his score and it's more of his energy, his defense.
- 3:42Speaker 3: He was a guy that came in seeing what we
- 3:45Speaker 3: need to see when we lacked in was brough tons
- 3:48Speaker 3: of energy, tons of excitement.
- 3:50Speaker 2: It was a crowd favorite. And then you know, just a.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Regular normal guy with a mohawk and a lot of tattoos.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Even though he gives that demeanor like a tough guy.
- 3:59Speaker 3: He's tough, but he's not a mean guy.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Like on the court. You don't want to mess with
- 4:03Speaker 2: him off the court, you want to hang with him
- 4:04Speaker 2: every day.
- 4:06Speaker 1: The Pacer stole Game two, with Roy Hibbert leading the
- 4:08Speaker 1: way with a twenty nine point double double. Heat responded
- 4:12Speaker 1: with a dominant Game three win in Indiana, propelled by
- 4:14Speaker 1: each starter scoring double digits. In Game four, Roy Hibbert
- 4:18Speaker 1: dominated the paint, recording another twenty point double double to
- 4:21Speaker 1: lead the Pacers to victory and even the series at
- 4:23Speaker 1: two to two.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Going against Roy Hibbert. It was fun, definitely a good player.
- 4:29Speaker 3: That little baby jump hook that he had was on
- 4:31Speaker 3: Stop Boys seven to two. And you know, our biggest
- 4:34Speaker 3: problem was we didn't really have a big to really
- 4:36Speaker 3: guard him, or big of size besides bird Man. So
- 4:38Speaker 3: we had Shane garden him, sometimes, we had Ud garden him.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Sometimes we had Chris Bosch Garden sometimes. So he was
- 4:44Speaker 3: just really a matchup problem in the half court set.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Just the physicality, I think that was the main thing.
- 4:50Speaker 3: There was always physical They always try to beat us
- 4:52Speaker 3: up and they always try to outthink us. And that
- 4:55Speaker 3: was the thing with our team was like when we
- 4:57Speaker 3: locked in, you can't outthink us. But we do have
- 5:00Speaker 3: Acadasiel moments as a team, and those that's what they
- 5:03Speaker 3: was good at was attacking those Lacadazuel moments.
- 5:06Speaker 2: One person I'll give a lot of credit to was
- 5:07Speaker 2: Shane Battier. That was our defensive mind. He knew everything
- 5:13Speaker 2: when it came to defense.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Like I remember just sitting before games and sitting in
- 5:16Speaker 3: the jakuzie warming our feet up and just going over
- 5:18Speaker 3: to defensive game playing with him when.
- 5:20Speaker 2: It came to thinking the game.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Everybody talked to Shane, from d Wade to Braun to Spoe.
- 5:25Speaker 3: He was our brains if that makes sense.
- 5:27Speaker 2: He was. He was the brains of.
- 5:28Speaker 1: The operation, and that defensive focus began to shift this series.
- 5:34Speaker 1: In Game five, Miami held Indiana to a then series
- 5:37Speaker 1: low seventy nine points to take a three to two lead.
- 5:41Speaker 1: They just needed one more win, but when presented with
- 5:44Speaker 1: a chance to close out the series in Indiana, the
- 5:47Speaker 1: heat crumbled against a desperate Pacers team, losing ninety one
- 5:50Speaker 1: to seventy seven.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Well, so much of the playoffs was about the recovery
- 5:59Speaker 3: here for a lost forty eight hours until they see it.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Back up again. I mean, this is a lifeless team
- 6:05Speaker 2: right now.
- 6:06Speaker 3: I'm looking at everybody's faces. That is I've never seen
- 6:08Speaker 3: this part. Besides Chris Bosh, he's kind of upset. I
- 6:13Speaker 3: think everybody's just like we let one slip away. This
- 6:15Speaker 3: was our chance to ended and really get ready for
- 6:18Speaker 3: the next series. We knew how to beat the Pacers,
- 6:20Speaker 3: and we know playing at their home state was a
- 6:22Speaker 3: tough tough place to play, especially for a closeout game.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Like that.
- 6:25Speaker 3: So we just knew that, we knew that one slipping.
- 6:27Speaker 3: We just had to do everything a little bit faster,
- 6:29Speaker 3: a little bit harder.
- 6:31Speaker 2: You full pot cout supposed one hundred and fifty of come,
- 6:34Speaker 2: shuck it up, shut up. I remember the most was
- 6:36Speaker 2: the crowd.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Just how loud the crowd was coming into that game,
- 6:39Speaker 3: and that just gave us all the confidence in the world.
- 6:41Speaker 3: I think we actually blew them out that game. The
- 6:43Speaker 3: yeah that I'll blame that one on the crowd. The
- 6:46Speaker 3: crowd was just behind us and had us so amped
- 6:49Speaker 3: up and hype for that game, on top of the
- 6:52Speaker 3: jitters of being in the Game seven already.
- 6:54Speaker 2: So definitely big up to Heat Nation for that one.
- 6:57Speaker 1: He took Game seven in dominant fashion, deletely overwhelming the Pacers,
- 7:01Speaker 1: forcing twenty one turnovers, and as Indiana unraveled, Lebron thrived.
- 7:07Speaker 1: He scored thirty two points and had eight rebounds, leading
- 7:10Speaker 1: Miami to a commanding ninety nine to seventy six victory.
- 7:14Speaker 1: The Heat were headed to their third straight NBA Finals.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Their opponent, the San Antonio Spurs, led by Tim Duncan's
- 7:22Speaker 1: quiet dominance in Tony Parker's steady control game one came
- 7:27Speaker 1: down to the final moments and the Spurs leaned on
- 7:30Speaker 1: Tony Parker to clinch the victory.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Brawl draw nearly lost.
- 7:36Speaker 1: It's still dribbling Parker Tutor super just gets it off
- 7:40Speaker 1: the tar letty catch up water shock for Parker.
- 7:44Speaker 3: That was a tough shot by Tony Parker. That was
- 7:47Speaker 3: a move he was getting going in that fourth court.
- 7:50Speaker 3: I remember he probably hit a shot similar to this
- 7:53Speaker 3: on me right before this play. He just had it
- 7:55Speaker 3: going in a fourth and it was just one of
- 7:56Speaker 3: the moments, like you see why they champions. You see
- 7:59Speaker 3: why Tony Parker as a player he is came with
- 8:01Speaker 3: Tony Parker's his speed. If you didn't match your speed,
- 8:04Speaker 3: he would blow past you every time. So he had
- 8:06Speaker 3: to catch his second move and not a spirst move.
- 8:08Speaker 2: So he made you think. He made you lock in
- 8:10Speaker 2: and hold on, hold on to your principals on the
- 8:12Speaker 2: defense end.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Quick shot.
- 8:16Speaker 2: And lost, and that's sh shot.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Antonio comes in into Miami and wins game one.
- 8:23Speaker 3: This game one lost fuck a little bit different, just
- 8:25Speaker 3: because it's the Spurs. They've been there before, their champions,
- 8:28Speaker 3: and you know they had a great coach and pop
- 8:30Speaker 3: and great players and Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and Manu
- 8:33Speaker 3: So it was kind of like, we really have to
- 8:36Speaker 3: go make adjustments and we just can't do things harder
- 8:38Speaker 3: and faster and stronger like we did versus Okay, see
- 8:41Speaker 3: the previous years. One thing about our team, we've been
- 8:43Speaker 3: dealing with adversary ever since bron came there. So that's
- 8:47Speaker 3: one thing that we was accustomed to and knew how
- 8:48Speaker 3: to adjust. We're our best with our backs against the wall.
- 8:51Speaker 2: We've always been like that, and we played Okay.
- 8:53Speaker 3: See the year before it was a bunch of trash talking,
- 8:55Speaker 3: a bunch of name calling, a bunch of just uh,
- 8:58Speaker 3: you knew, two teams that wanted to win so bad,
- 9:00Speaker 3: that didn't like each other, what had the respect for
- 9:02Speaker 3: each other. We're a team that likes to be gritty,
- 9:06Speaker 3: get into get into different things, commotions, different battles, whole
- 9:09Speaker 3: grap and the spurs are just like, nah, we're gonna
- 9:12Speaker 3: kill you. What kindness like, oh you hit you hit
- 9:14Speaker 3: that shot? Nice shot, good shot? Well what do I
- 9:17Speaker 3: say back to somebody gave me a compliment? Their kindness
- 9:20Speaker 3: is a killer. It can mess with your mind if
- 9:22Speaker 3: you let it.
- 9:23Speaker 1: The heat shook off their disappointing Game one loss and
- 9:26Speaker 1: fired back with a dominant defensive performance in Game two.
- 9:30Speaker 1: We're seeing seventeen turnovers and blocking six shots, including a
- 9:33Speaker 1: huge lebron Chase down block on Splitter Chalmers. Nineteen points
- 9:40Speaker 1: led to eat too and one hundred and three to
- 9:42Speaker 1: eighty four victory, evening the series. But the Spurs turned
- 9:45Speaker 1: the tables in Game three, causing sixteen Heat turnovers. They
- 9:49Speaker 1: also hit sixteen threes booh Danny Green and Gary Neil,
- 9:53Speaker 1: dropping playoff career highs to win one hundred and thirteen
- 9:56Speaker 1: to seventy seven. Game four was a must win for
- 10:00Speaker 1: the Heat, but the Spurs started out hot, getting a
- 10:03Speaker 1: quick ten point lead. Then d Wade happened. He rallied
- 10:07Speaker 1: them back into the game with thirty three points, six
- 10:10Speaker 1: rebounds in six steals. The Heat Big three combined for
- 10:13Speaker 1: eighty five points to get a huge one hundred and
- 10:16Speaker 1: nine to ninety three win in even the series. But
- 10:19Speaker 1: the Spurs fired back. Tim Duncan controlled the paint and
- 10:23Speaker 1: dominated the rebounding battle in Game five, finishing with seventeen
- 10:26Speaker 1: points and twelve boards as San Antonio cruised to victory.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Now the Heat were down three two to a Spurs
- 10:33Speaker 1: team led by Tim Duncan.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Tim Duncan and by the way, the side note, the
- 10:40Speaker 3: person that did all the nice compliment was Tim Duncan.
- 10:42Speaker 2: He started it.
- 10:43Speaker 3: But Tim Dunkany's a Hall of Famer, missed a fundamental
- 10:46Speaker 3: just the way. You can't speed him up, you can't
- 10:47Speaker 3: make him make a mistake if you don't know how
- 10:50Speaker 3: to make a mistake. Like some players, you know, if
- 10:52Speaker 3: you pressure him to go make mistake, if you found
- 10:53Speaker 3: them hard, they're going to do something different. Tim Duncan's
- 10:57Speaker 3: just the same. He keeps the same game throughout the
- 10:59Speaker 3: whole throughout the whole time, So that's what makes him him.
- 11:04Speaker 3: I wouldn't say he was in his prime, but his
- 11:06Speaker 3: body and the way he moved it was, it's undescribable.
- 11:12Speaker 3: With the Spurs, they just always moved and then they
- 11:15Speaker 3: had shooters. They ran a play. I always remember this play.
- 11:18Speaker 3: It was kind of like a pick a roll and
- 11:20Speaker 3: Danny Green would run to the opposite side. So if
- 11:22Speaker 3: you're the bottom man helping, you think your man's to
- 11:25Speaker 3: the left where he normally is, but then he's to
- 11:28Speaker 3: the right, So your natural reaction is always going this way,
- 11:31Speaker 3: and they would hit Danny Grant on the opposite sign
- 11:33Speaker 3: for a three or Gary Neal. I just always remember
- 11:35Speaker 3: that their spacing was always a one. Nothing really broke down,
- 11:38Speaker 3: They didn't have bad moments, and they didn't really make mistakes.
- 11:42Speaker 1: The Spurs kept the momentum going. To start Game six,
- 11:46Speaker 1: Tim Duncan hit his first eight shots and scored twenty
- 11:48Speaker 1: five first half points. In the third quarter, San Antonio
- 11:52Speaker 1: led by double digits. Miami season was slipping away, but
- 11:57Speaker 1: the Heat began to fight back, and then came a
- 11:59Speaker 1: moment to really changed the momentum. As Lebron James attacked
- 12:03Speaker 1: the rim, Duncan met him from behind, knocking his signature
- 12:07Speaker 1: had banned off mid air, and from that point forward,
- 12:10Speaker 1: the energy of the game shifted. Lebron took over. We're
- 12:14Speaker 1: just over a minute ago the Heat tied the game.
- 12:22Speaker 3: As when we finally tied it up, it was just like, okay,
- 12:24Speaker 3: now we got it where we want to just keep
- 12:26Speaker 3: going from here. No letdowns, no look backs, no turnovers,
- 12:29Speaker 3: no mistakes. And from that point on, I think we
- 12:33Speaker 3: made about four or five big mistakes that almost caused
- 12:36Speaker 3: us the game.
- 12:36Speaker 2: I remember, mind, I came down, I got to the paint.
- 12:40Speaker 3: I should have shot it, but I tried to throw
- 12:42Speaker 3: it past the d wade and they got intercepted and
- 12:46Speaker 3: they came down. I think we had a foul. Lebron
- 12:51Speaker 3: came down and did the same thing. Tried to pass
- 12:53Speaker 3: the CB, it got intercepted and we had a foul.
- 12:56Speaker 3: So it was like three or four crucial turnovers that
- 12:58Speaker 3: we had from this that we said we wasn't gonna
- 13:01Speaker 3: make any more mistakes.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Yeah, for seven old run for the San Antonio Spurs.
- 13:08Speaker 3: The infamous pat rowdy stands fat, shows no emotions until
- 13:12Speaker 3: it's time for to show emotion.
- 13:17Speaker 1: A lot of pressure on a twenty one year old
- 13:20Speaker 1: in his first NBA finals, and with Duncan owt attack
- 13:26Speaker 1: the rim. They're not gonna come off a three point shooter.
- 13:30Speaker 2: You can score quickly for that moment.
- 13:33Speaker 3: I don't know what he was thinking when he took
- 13:35Speaker 3: Tim Duncan out, but it was just one of the
- 13:37Speaker 3: moments where.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Thank you, that's all I can say. Thank you. I
- 13:43Speaker 2: was mad about this point too. Watch one. They're from Leonard.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Should the Spurs foul? Should many go for the three
- 13:51Speaker 2: right aways?
- 13:52Speaker 1: Just attack the basket? James catch us, puts up a three,
- 13:56Speaker 1: won't go rebound bosh back count to Allan his pre.
- 14:00Speaker 2: PLI I'm not gonna lie.
- 14:07Speaker 3: I was upset when Spoe drew this up because I
- 14:09Speaker 3: felt like we should be running it for Ray instead
- 14:11Speaker 3: of Brawn. But you know, superstars are superstars. You give
- 14:15Speaker 3: him a chance to be superstars in those moments. So
- 14:18Speaker 3: he got a good look, got a great look actually,
- 14:21Speaker 3: and just missed it. Ray would be in practice every
- 14:24Speaker 3: day back pedaling to the corner shooting three, So it's
- 14:28Speaker 3: kind of like one of them things like I would
- 14:31Speaker 3: ask one Tom like why do you do that? Like
- 14:33Speaker 3: why do you practice the way shooting the way you do?
- 14:36Speaker 3: He always tell me you never know what type of
- 14:38Speaker 3: food work you go to need in any type of moment.
- 14:40Speaker 3: I've seen him practice that shot so many times that
- 14:43Speaker 3: he gets behind that three without even looking at it,
- 14:45Speaker 3: so I knew it was it was a good shot.
- 14:46Speaker 3: It's one of the moments where like we came back
- 14:49Speaker 3: and we took all the momentum, so it's like it's
- 14:52Speaker 3: our game to lose now.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Going into overtime, Breed trying to get free Coss court
- 14:57Speaker 2: pass The Green Green.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Plot plot past dur b Beer Game seven that.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Was a big block buy CV.
- 15:05Speaker 3: This game was so physically tough, just for everything that
- 15:08Speaker 3: went into it, from the emotions, to up and down emotions,
- 15:12Speaker 3: to seeing the crowd give up, seeing the crowd come
- 15:16Speaker 3: back and cheer back up, and just everything that you
- 15:19Speaker 3: had to go through, just just the ups and down
- 15:21Speaker 3: soout that whole game.
- 15:22Speaker 2: It wasn't a smooth game like it was supposed to be.
- 15:25Speaker 3: So it was one of those games where like you
- 15:28Speaker 3: had to claw and fight the whole way to win.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Game seven on our home court, we can't lose, we
- 15:35Speaker 3: won't lose.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Game seven would be the ultimate battle. The Spurs, no
- 15:41Speaker 1: strangers to big games, came out firing after the Heat
- 15:44Speaker 1: fell behind fifteen to ten early. Shane Battier delivered an
- 15:47Speaker 1: immediate spark off the bench, knocking down two quick threes
- 15:50Speaker 1: to ignite an eight to oh Miami run, but San
- 15:53Speaker 1: Antonio continued to pressure the Heat offensively, attacking the paint
- 15:56Speaker 1: and drawing contact. The Spurs attempted fifteen free throws first half,
- 16:00Speaker 1: and Miami just attempted three. Even with Lebron leading all
- 16:04Speaker 1: scorers with fifteen points, Miami was only up two at
- 16:07Speaker 1: the half. And it wasn't just the three throw disparity
- 16:10Speaker 1: preventing Miami from pulling away. The little mistakes were getting
- 16:13Speaker 1: in the way, like Chalmers four turnovers. In a game
- 16:17Speaker 1: this tight, every possession mattered.
- 16:24Speaker 3: I was so hyped to play this game that I
- 16:26Speaker 3: could not hit a three to the whole game and
- 16:28Speaker 3: the one three I was the one at the backboard
- 16:31Speaker 3: at the end of the third quarter.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Thomas racing up the four six fires, three quarters COTSI buzzer,
- 16:42Speaker 1: Mario Thomas.
- 16:43Speaker 2: He was that Mario. That's why I had to fuck
- 16:46Speaker 2: ver Chalmers now with twelve points, had a.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Couple of difficult turnovers here on the third but never
- 16:53Speaker 1: afraid to take the big shot.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Because I know there's only one or two outcomes.
- 16:57Speaker 3: If you don't take the shot, now you have three outcomes,
- 17:00Speaker 3: so you never took it, so you don't know if
- 17:01Speaker 3: you made it or miss it. And if you do
- 17:03Speaker 3: take a shot, either make it or miss it. And
- 17:06Speaker 3: how much work you put it in the gym seventy
