Latest / 360 with Katie Woolf / Member For Goyder Kezia Purick Urges The Rural Area To Stay Vigilant
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now joining me on the line right now to tell
- 0:02Speaker 1: us a bit more about what's going on out in
- 0:04Speaker 1: the rural area and some concerning behavior that's been seen
- 0:07Speaker 1: out in the rural area. Is Kesier Puic, the independent
- 0:10Speaker 1: member for Goida. Good morning, Kezier, morning, Katie.
- 0:14Speaker 2: I'm not sure if it's a good morning given rule there,
- 0:18Speaker 2: but at least it's morning and that's a bonus.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Well, Kesier, tell us exactly what has happened, because I
- 0:24Speaker 1: saw you post on social media there's a property on
- 0:28Speaker 1: gull Their Road and people outside with a massive knife.
- 0:34Speaker 2: That's correct, Katie, and I stakenly said it was last night,
- 0:38Speaker 2: but it was the night before, so for the people
- 0:40Speaker 2: who are listening from the rule area. But it's indicative
- 0:43Speaker 2: of a bigger problem. It could have been last night.
- 0:46Speaker 2: It's just that we haven't heard about it. What happened
- 0:48Speaker 2: not before is between two thirty in the morning about
- 0:51Speaker 2: five o'clock these two in the photo on my social media,
- 0:56Speaker 2: possibly others. What are going down Gunmere Road, the road
- 1:00Speaker 2: and Levy Roads and going into properties trying to check
- 1:03Speaker 2: on sheds, looking into cars, doors are open. If they
- 1:06Speaker 2: took anything, I haven't heard. But the more serious part
- 1:10Speaker 2: of it is they one of them was carrying a
- 1:12Speaker 2: knife out, so that's nothing. There's nothing to suggest that
- 1:16Speaker 2: the other low life skim bag didn't have some kind
- 1:20Speaker 2: of weapon on him as well. They were well clad,
- 1:24Speaker 2: in other words, they had hoods on. I couldn't see
- 1:26Speaker 2: in the photos if they have gloves, but they are
- 1:29Speaker 2: clearly organized. Now this matter has been reported to the police,
- 1:33Speaker 2: and the police are well and truly onto it. I'm
- 1:36Speaker 2: hoping that they can be caught sooner than later because
- 1:41Speaker 2: this is just not acceenuble. The photos of that on
- 1:44Speaker 2: my media from this home and gun their road is
- 1:47Speaker 2: a family. They have two young teenagers and I couldn't
- 1:51Speaker 2: send the video, couldn't put the video on. They've seen
- 1:55Speaker 2: checking the doors. They're checking the doors of the bedrooms
- 1:57Speaker 2: of the children. Now imagine if child or adult woke
- 2:01Speaker 2: up these people in their bedroom with a knife. I mean,
- 2:05Speaker 2: apart from the fact that you know, you'd just be
- 2:08Speaker 2: so shocked. Anything could have happened, you know, anything. And
- 2:12Speaker 2: if you're carrying a weapon, I always maintain you intend
- 2:16Speaker 2: to use it. If you're carrying a gun, you intend
- 2:19Speaker 2: to use it. You're carrying a knife, you intend to
- 2:21Speaker 2: use a Jemmy bar broken bottle. You're carrying it because
- 2:24Speaker 2: you intend to use it for whatever reason, usually for harm.
- 2:28Speaker 2: So this is a serious situation that's confronting people in
- 2:32Speaker 2: the Ruin. I know elsewhere there's been a problem else casin,
- 2:36Speaker 2: but Rule Air we I like to think we're a
- 2:38Speaker 2: little bit insulated for lots of different reasons. And so
- 2:42Speaker 2: I've written to the minister this morning first up, after
- 2:44Speaker 2: I got this information, to ask for more patrols urgently
- 2:47Speaker 2: into the Rule Air such that we can apprehend these two,
- 2:51Speaker 2: if not more, criminals, because that's what they are. They're criminals.
- 2:54Speaker 2: They're carrying a sharp long knife in public, yeshing to
- 2:57Speaker 2: do something with.
- 2:58Speaker 3: It tasier do you know?
- 3:00Speaker 1: I mean, not that it makes it any better, But
- 3:01Speaker 1: do you know if these criminals have been able to
- 3:03Speaker 1: get into any of the homes of those out in
- 3:06Speaker 1: the rural area and if items have been stolen?
- 3:09Speaker 2: At this point, I don't know that. I do know
- 3:12Speaker 2: they did open cars, and yes they were into cars
- 3:16Speaker 2: and maybe took things out of cars that are in cars.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Rural people do tend to have more dogs and larger
- 3:22Speaker 2: dogs in town people. I believe perhaps they were scared
- 3:25Speaker 2: of and also sense the lights and things of that nature.
- 3:28Speaker 2: But this property in question, the sense of light came
- 3:31Speaker 2: on for the garage area, they didn't even flinch. They
- 3:35Speaker 2: weren't even worried about, you know, a sense of light.
- 3:37Speaker 2: And obviously knowing they'd be CCTV footage, they just couldn't
- 3:41Speaker 2: care in their thinking there were no consequences one for
- 3:46Speaker 2: doing what they're doing, carrying an offensive and a nasty
- 3:48Speaker 2: weapon too that they're being viewed and filmed on footage.
- 3:52Speaker 2: They just don't care. Because I think I heard on
- 3:55Speaker 2: some news stories were caught somewhere and they both had
- 3:57Speaker 2: ankle bracelets on.
- 3:58Speaker 1: You know, I've read a message out about that just
- 4:01Speaker 1: a couple of minutes ago or a little bit earlier
- 4:03Speaker 1: last hour about the buff club being broken into again.
- 4:07Speaker 3: That's it, you know, that's the concern people have got keasier.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Well it is because it's not. It should be, And
- 4:14Speaker 2: I know the government's talking about changing some more bits
- 4:17Speaker 2: of the bail looks and adding bits to offensive and
- 4:19Speaker 2: prohibitive weapons. Any weapon, any item that's been used as
- 4:24Speaker 2: a weapon should be a presumption against bail, whether it's
- 4:28Speaker 2: a broken bottle, a tomahawk, a machete, a lumper wood.
- 4:32Speaker 2: If you've used something to cause harm to someone else
- 4:35Speaker 2: and do cause harm, no bail, Yeah, the jails get fuller. Well,
- 4:39Speaker 2: tough pities, so jails get fuller, you know, and it's
- 4:42Speaker 2: an uncomfortable life, which it should be, so you don't
- 4:44Speaker 2: just keep poking around the edges with this bail stuff,
- 4:47Speaker 2: Chief Minister, it's not good enough.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Well and Keizia, no doubt. We'll talk more about that
- 4:52Speaker 1: tomorrow during the week. That was as well after the
- 4:54Speaker 1: Chief Ministry, given that bit of a time frame earlier
- 4:56Speaker 1: in the week. But it sounds like it's also a
- 4:59Speaker 1: bit of a warning to our mates out in the
- 5:01Speaker 1: rural area that you're going to need to take some
- 5:03Speaker 1: extra care if you've got people out there loitering around
- 5:06Speaker 1: trying to get in and they're armed with knives.
- 5:09Speaker 2: That's correct, Katy. This happened about two years ago. There
- 5:11Speaker 2: was a group of people who were going around the
- 5:14Speaker 2: Best Creek, I guess because it's the closest to sort
- 5:16Speaker 2: of you know, pool linga kind of area, and they
- 5:19Speaker 2: did leave knives around in driveways where they are looking
- 5:21Speaker 2: to steal stuff out of cars, and you know, weever
- 5:24Speaker 2: sheds or whatever. So yes, so people listening, do lock
- 5:27Speaker 2: your house and take the keys out of your car,
- 5:29Speaker 2: and make sure if you've got dogs and you hear
- 5:31Speaker 2: any kind of noise, let them out, let them out
- 5:35Speaker 2: and scare them off, and turn on your lights on.
- 5:37Speaker 2: That's what I've said, turn all your outside lights on
- 5:40Speaker 2: and then straight away ring the police, ring the police, everyone,
- 5:43Speaker 2: because we have to get the data to show this
- 5:46Speaker 2: government that there is a serious problem in our town.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Unless you call the police, we won't get the data.
- 5:51Speaker 2: So people could do that, Ring the police, ring triple zero.
- 5:54Speaker 2: You are scared there's an intruder with a knife, for example.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Yep, well this is the thing and on keys here.
- 6:00Speaker 1: It's got to be reported to the police. They need
- 6:02Speaker 1: to know exactly what's going on, they need to know
- 6:04Speaker 1: where they need to send their resources. But also it
- 6:07Speaker 1: has to be included in those crime statistics.
- 6:10Speaker 3: And we've got to see some change here.
- 6:12Speaker 1: We you know, the last thing that we want is
- 6:14Speaker 1: people getting around with bloody knives.
- 6:16Speaker 2: That is frightening, Katie, and I know people have talked
- 6:20Speaker 2: about this. They did change the laws in England and
- 6:23Speaker 2: also Scotland and probably elsewhere where carrying a knife in
- 6:26Speaker 2: public was an offense. Now people raise the issue about
- 6:30Speaker 2: pocket knives and things about nature which are used in
- 6:32Speaker 2: you know, bush people and come to people of parstal people.
- 6:36Speaker 2: You can get exemptions, of course, you can get exemptions
- 6:38Speaker 2: to any law. So I think the government, I think
- 6:41Speaker 2: we've talked about this previously, the government seriously needs to
- 6:43Speaker 2: look at changing whichever legislation it is to have the
- 6:46Speaker 2: carrying of a weapon such as a knife or a
- 6:49Speaker 2: shitty in public an offense and a serious offense, not
- 6:53Speaker 2: just that, oh you're a naughty person, you shouldn't have
- 6:55Speaker 2: had that. A serious offense, punishable byte, I don't know what. Yeah,
- 6:58Speaker 2: you've got to stop. There got to be some strong
- 7:01Speaker 2: laws and strong penalties for these for these people who
- 7:05Speaker 2: are just running rampant across our town and our rural area.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Well, this is the thing. And Kes, look, I think
- 7:11Speaker 1: you know they's you. You're potentially putting yourself at risk
- 7:16Speaker 1: out in the rural area too, because I know people
- 7:18Speaker 1: have got bloody big dogs out there.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Well, there's other things we've got in the rural are Katie,
- 7:22Speaker 2: which I won't go into, but i'll tell you what.
- 7:25Speaker 2: People come onto my bloody properly with my parents and
- 7:27Speaker 2: my mum and my other sisters. I said, they'll get
- 7:30Speaker 2: what's coming for them, that's for sure. And I'm not
- 7:33Speaker 2: suggesting we should do anything illy.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Definitely not.
- 7:37Speaker 2: But you come, you come and looking to harm my family.
- 7:40Speaker 2: I'm going to go out and bloody stop you. That's
- 7:42Speaker 2: all I'm going to say, Katie. And I think people
- 7:44Speaker 2: should be very vigilant and make sure you just lock
- 7:47Speaker 2: and look look after everything on your property and animals
- 7:49Speaker 2: and humans, et cetera.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, well, Kesier Puric, We'll see you tomorrow morning
- 7:55Speaker 1: for the week that was.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Thank you, thanks very much. Good on you, Keasier, and.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Good to catch up with Keesy Epuric there to find
- 8:01Speaker 1: out exactly what is going on in the rural area.
- 8:04Speaker 1: I know that plenty of you listen out in the
- 8:07Speaker 1: rural area, and you know this is the thing. You've
- 8:09Speaker 1: got to make sure that we're safe, no matter where
- 8:11Speaker 1: we live, no matter what.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Part of the territory we live.
- 8:13Speaker 1: But absolutely mortifying to see that there are people getting
- 8:17Speaker 1: around with knives, snooping around houses out in the rural area.
- 8:21Speaker 1: And yeah, it's like the worrying part here is the
- 8:25Speaker 1: fact that people are armed with weapons. You know, we're
- 8:29Speaker 1: not talking about butter knives, but even if we are,
- 8:31Speaker 1: they can cause serious harm. We need to make sure
- 8:34Speaker 1: that there is some really serious change when it comes to,
- 8:40Speaker 1: you know, this issue that we've got with knives being
- 8:42Speaker 1: used and the Chief Minister's timeline that she provided earlier
- 8:46Speaker 1: in the week.
- 8:46Speaker 3: I know, to so many of you it is just
- 8:48Speaker 3: not good enough now.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Greg in Parapi's message through and said, Kezi Epuric is
- 8:54Speaker 1: a legend.
- 8:55Speaker 3: I wish she was my sister.
- 8:58Speaker 1: I met her niece actually on Friday night and she
- 9:02Speaker 1: was a legend as well. So we're going to take
- 9:04Speaker 1: a bit of a break coming your way very shortly.
- 9:06Speaker 1: I'm actually going to be speaking to Melanderie McCarthy
- 9:10Speaker 3: Lyndon Jonesie Jones, and Amanda Lave
