- Joana Lisboa: Hi everybody, my name is Joana. Assumpta Munsi: I'm Assumpta Joana Lisboa: And we want to welcome you back to the vocal hack podcast. So this podcast really helps you connect with your voice and to understand how it works and how you can make it better. Assumpta Munsi: Yes, exactly. Joana Lisboa: ⁓ talk about the most common motives of not with confidence. ⁓ And this is something that we see very, very ⁓ in our students and clients. ⁓ Assumpta Munsi: Yeah, we're gonna tell you what we noticed the most. And probably once we tell you, you're gonna be like, ⁓ I knew this or like, this sounds so simple. Like, haven't I thought about this earlier? ⁓ But sometimes the solutions for are ⁓ just in front of your And you just need someone who says like, have you have you looked at this? ⁓ So this is what we're do today. ⁓ And The three mistakes that we noticed the most are kind of all related each other in the end. What do you think, Joana? Joana Lisboa: Yes, for sure. the common roots. Which is... tan tan tan! ⁓ Assumpta Munsi: Your breathing! Joana Lisboa: ⁓ it's ALL in the breathing, people! Assumpta Munsi: Exactly. Okay, so let's let's talk about them. The first thing we notice a lot that you can notice in your speech and a lot of women do it up speak. What is up speak? Basically, I'm going to say something to you, Joana, and I want you to ⁓ just observe. the difference. So I have this product I think it is the best product because it helps you with your skin to be more and more healthy. So I think you should buy this product. Joana Lisboa: Okay, I can see something there that is a little bit annoying. Assumpta Munsi: Let me now do it again. Joana Lisboa: so let's ⁓ Assumpta Munsi: see how this Joana Lisboa: without the up speak. Assumpta Munsi: So, Joana, I have this product and I think it is the best product because it helps you with your skin to be more moisturized and healthy. And that's why I think it is the best product. Joana Lisboa: ooo to buy it already. Assumpta Munsi: So guys, you see, the difference is at the end of every sentence you can either go up or down with your voice. Joana Lisboa: or maintain Assumpta Munsi: or maintain the same. But when you go up, it is almost like you are questioning yourself. Like you're not actually believing or convincing yourself ⁓ of what you're saying. how should someone else ⁓ believe or trust what saying? Okay, that was number one. As you can see, once you hear it, you can't un-hear it. Joana Lisboa: Hahaha Assumpta Munsi: listen to yourself and listen yourself to see, do I go up at end of a sentence, even if it's not a question? Yes or no. Some languages have it more natural to have more melody in them. Italian, ⁓ for example, or ⁓ French also has a very different melody. German has a very different melody. So in each language, it can look a little bit different. But the end result is always do you go up in the end, even if it is not a question? That is up speak and it makes you sound so much less confident. Joana Lisboa: other mistake ⁓ rushing. ⁓ should we rush ⁓ we talk? Doesn't make any sense, ⁓ you want to take ⁓ train ⁓ you're with a lot of hurry. But even then, ⁓ doesn't make sense. You can do shorter sentences and you run. ⁓ you don't need to rush ⁓ own... Assumpta Munsi: Exactly. Joana Lisboa: speech and this I think this example everyone knows someone that speaks too fast like this podcast is really important for me I really enjoy to do it and every time I do it I feel very very very very happy these kind of things you don't you don't stress stress stress Assumpta Munsi: So stressful just listening to it. I'm like, okay. Joana Lisboa: So every time you speak like this, brushing up, you're just passing that message. Stress, stress, stress. You don't want to rush things up. You want to connect with people. Assumpta Munsi: Yes, exactly. I think this is so important, especially because when you rush, you don't give the recipient of the message the time to actually process what you're saying. So when you talk that fast, your message cannot even land because their brain you know what you're going to say, but they don't. So you don't let them actually process what you're saying. And that makes you also don't sound like you believe in what you're saying because you're just rushing through it. All of that two points so far ⁓ both related to do you actually believe in what you're saying? Do you actually trust ⁓ you're saying? So ask yourself that question. ⁓ if you do, then show them. Joana Lisboa: lot of people, say, ⁓ but my brain is fast. need to speak very fast. Otherwise I lose my ⁓ line of But that doesn't make people. We have to talk slower. I'm not saying we should talk everyone at the same ⁓ speed. But we have find our own speed. So like Assumpta said, Other people understand us. Talking is a process of connecting, sharing, listening. So if we are very, very, very fast, like Assumpta said, there's no time for do any of these things. Listening, connecting, understanding. So this is important. Not to rush. Assumpta Munsi: And the third thing notice a lot ⁓ is something that is more visual than actually ⁓ audible. is your posture. ⁓ And you can hear ⁓ but most people are not actively aware that you can hear it. We two we can for sure, but you can mostly see it and it makes you look not confident ⁓ on stage ⁓ front a camera, whatever it is, ⁓ because even if you're in camera you're sitting this, people that are just listening and cannot me right now, I'm crouching forward, not really. engaging anything and maybe if you have noticed my voice also sounds a little bit less engaged because your posture actually influences your voice a lot as well. Joana Lisboa: Yes, every time you're slouching, you're doing something that you don't even have the conscience that you're doing. You're giving the wrong message. It gives the wrong message because it seems that you don't care. And this is something that can be perceived in everything you do. Every conversation that you have, if you have a good posture, it could be with your family, with the loved ones, everyone at work, you just have to be a little bit more conscious. Where are your shoulders? Where are shoulders? So you just have to put them back and down. And this really helps. Even if you're sitting if you do this, you feel ⁓ much more comfortable talking. Assumpta Munsi: That's so true and especially because even if you do care, it doesn't look like it, unfortunately. Or even if you trust what you say, and you're confident in what you say, it doesn't look like it. And that is something that so easily undermines your confidence, what you're saying. And we see it all the time. I think it's one of the big, big things like think Joana can just agree with that. We see all the time, like these three things, and the problem is... They're such simple small things, but they have such a huge impact on everything else on your breathing, on your speed on your connection to your emotions that you can show when you speak on your eye contact on your body language. All of these things are influenced by these three mistakes. And therefore Even if they're so small, they ripple in so many more fields of your presentation. Joana Lisboa: Yes, so let's summarize three mistakes that a lot of people do while they're speaking. Upspeak, rushing ⁓ your speech ⁓ a bad So to, you take care these three mistakes, gonna feel... a lot more confident when you're speaking. And it's something that we can have like a, how do you say, a seal, Assumpta Munsi: Exactly. Joana Lisboa: how do you say? ⁓ Assumpta Munsi: stamp of approval or like... Joana Lisboa: So you can have our stamp of approval on this. If you do this, ⁓ you're gonna feel confident. And that's sure. Assumpta Munsi: we're very curious. ⁓ Let know in the comments, ⁓ which you struggle the most with or what you notice that you're doing ⁓ and you're trying to fix it.
