- The DECAF Network: Hey, it's Dex, creator of Reboot Player One and host at the Checkpoint. And today's question, which I've literally just read before I hit record, is one question that is going to give me troubles trying to answer. Question is why can I give everyone else good advice but struggle to take my own? Why can I give everyone else good advice but struggle to take my own? Wow. That's like a kick in the guts. I've only just recently had this happen to me. It's happened a number of times, actually, but I've I've had one happen recently. And it's a bit of a wake-up call, honestly. I don't I'm not really sure how to answer this question, so I'm just gonna see if I can talk things through. Now I recorded a video only a couple of minutes ago. And the question was something to do with researching things and and not taking action. And part of that question was me listening to things like podcasts and audio books and, you know, getting a lot of ideas from different parts for a business, whether it be marketing or branding or sales or operations or anything like that. I really do enjoy business podcasts. And I tend to retain the information. Not really for myself, and not even at a conscious level. It it just happens. It's subconscious. I don't sit there, I go, I need to remember the information on this podcast. It just literally happens. And what's happened in the past is the information that I remember from these podcasts. I I'm able to I'm able to par partake? That's not the word. I'm able to there's a word there. I I don't know what it is, but I'm able to give this information to people at seemingly the right times. And these right times, it can be a couple of days after I've listened to a podcast. It could be weeks, could be months, and in some cases it's even years where I've listened to a podcast and a a person asks me a question about this particular topic and I I'm I'm able to recall the information. It really is quite strange. Anyway, so from a business point of view, I have a lot of information. Now whether or not it's perfect for me, I don't know. Whether or not it's perfect for people that might ask, I don't know. But it's just some information. You know, it might be something to do with marketing. It could be an IT thing. It could be a branding thing. It could be anything that I've listened to somehow is applicable to conversations I have with my clients, with my friends, at any point. So with all this information. A number of times when I've asked for help from some people, you know, whether it be online, whether it be through forums at Red Hat or or even Chat GPT, a lot of the times when I've asked questions about my business, the answers come back and I know what the answers are. I've you know, sometimes I've even been able to recall the podcast episode where they've gone, I remember listening to that podcast from that answer you just gave me. But I don't know why I didn't think of it for myself. So I don't really know how to answer that question because it's happened to me a number of times. And the r the most recent time was only like a month ago, maybe less than a month ago. I had I I had some troubles with my course in terms of marketing. And I wanted to start a community. And in my head there there there was fragmentation there. Like that they weren't relating. And so I asked Chat GPT and I asked some friends and you know, I had a look what to see what was out there. And the answer was something that I had known about like many years ago. It's just I I wasn't able to see how it could be applied to my business at the time. And And it like I said, it was a wake-up call. It was a it was a gut punch. I'm like, wow. now I I I don't know if I've recorded this the video yet, but I'm pretty woo-woo. And so a lot of the times I put this down to, you know, the universe just saying to me, hey, you don't need to learn this just yet. You have to learn all this other stuff first for for this thing to happen. And honestly, that works for me. I I I can see how. Had I made the right decision beforehand, how I might not have given it the same amount of love and attention and content that it deserves. Whereas the way that I I had done it now, where I I've gone kind of this long path, the answer, even though it was still probably apparent well beforehand, there's more of a a chance of me sticking to that answer later in time. So that doesn't really answer the question because I don't think I have an answer to it. Why can I give everyone else good advice but struggle to take my own? the other thing is the work. I I would I would probably say that my my advice for any kind of situation to my own problems requires the the acceptance of, hey, there's a problem. hey, here's a solution. You know what it is. And hey, it it's not going to be nice to do. It could take a lot of work. It could take a lot of time. It could take a lot of patience. and in fact it might not even be the right, you know, solution. But it still has to be done in order to see if it will work or not. And there's probably a bunch of, you know, a lot of answers that I probably go down really quickly and go, wait, if this doesn't work, I should I have to try this other thing. and if that doesn't work, I have to try this other thing also. And so sometimes it's it's easier for me to go, well, I I I have this question. I kind of know the answer, but the answer is a bit too complicated for me. I'm not sure exactly how it's going to turn out. So I just might not do anything about it. It's probably a level of that as well. Whereas if it's somebody else I can just say to them, I heard this about the the situation that you described. See if it'll help. If it doesn't, that's cool. And then I don't have to do anything else about that. Whereas for me, it's a problem. I've got an answer. I've got to see if it works. I've got to, you know, assess it. And then if that doesn't work, I've got to do something else. And it's this big entire thing. And sometimes it's just easier to not do anything about it. So that's not really a queer a a clear answer, but it's my answer. Why can I give everyone else good advice but struggle to take my own? I'm working on it. And I don't know if I'll ever get to that point. Like for certain things it's easier. You know, IT is very it's very black and white. If I need a new if I need a laptop, I know which one to buy. And it would be the same kind of advice that I would give other people as well. Different so that's fine. It's different when it comes to other things, business related stuff, personal things, strategic stuff, even stuff that I still know. It's you know, I go I go down this path of well, what if this happens and what if that doesn't work? So yeah. If I ever find the right answer for it, I'll re-record. All right. now if you have questions like this and you'd like to discuss it with a whole bunch of friendly people, we do it every Wednesday. You can visit tc.rebitplayer1.com for all the details.
