- 0:04Speaker 1: Smell off. Now, lady, welcome to meet Triviaast. Now, welcome
- 0:32Speaker 1: to me Eater Radio Live. It's eleven a m. Mountain time,
- 0:36Speaker 1: Mountain Standard time here in Montana. Who's who's phone?
- 0:40Speaker 2: Oh?
- 0:40Speaker 1: Sorry, you know said you're an airplane. It's connected to
- 0:44Speaker 1: my computer and I am in airplane mode, but it's
- 0:48Speaker 1: still connects. That was Stephen Ranella.
- 0:50Speaker 3: We gotta we gotta clean this thing up here, guys.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I'm bothering. We do not have to have to. You
- 0:56Speaker 1: should tell Steve to come down even just like call me.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell him just to come down here if
- 1:00Speaker 1: he's here. Hold on one second, here, got a text
- 1:03Speaker 1: Steve come to studio.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Oh, this one's off to a real.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Record. Can't wait to get a text.
- 1:13Speaker 4: Message from Spencer says this is the worst radio Spencer.
- 1:18Speaker 5: Whenever Spencer's not hosting, you guys don't know those listeners
- 1:21Speaker 5: at home. Spencer brus himself a warm cup of coffee,
- 1:24Speaker 5: sits in a in a recliner and turns on the
- 1:26Speaker 5: show and takes notes and judges pulls out a legal.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Path and he's just he's like, haha, watch those boys.
- 1:31Speaker 6: Bird.
- 1:31Speaker 3: There may have been a text at one point that
- 1:33Speaker 3: said that was the worst radio live we've ever done.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Who was hosting that one?
- 1:37Speaker 3: I was involved?
- 1:39Speaker 1: I was involved too. I think it might have been
- 1:41Speaker 1: Corey to me and Corey is it?
- 1:43Speaker 3: Is it? Eleven am Mountain Time, Bozeman, Montana.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Yes? Do you want me to continue?
- 1:49Speaker 3: I'm just trying to get it back on the tracks here.
- 1:51Speaker 1: That's seven pm for our fellow Americans in Italy on Thursday,
- 1:56Speaker 1: February fifth, and we're live from me Eater World headquarters
- 1:59Speaker 1: in spring Like Bozeman, Montana. I'm your host, Jiannas Pteliz,
- 2:03Speaker 1: joined today by Seth Morris and Randa Williams. We've got
- 2:07Speaker 1: a great show for you today, including an interview from Cortina, Italy,
- 2:12Speaker 1: with Olympic biathlete Paul Schomer maybe Seamer I didn't ask
- 2:16Speaker 1: him and his coach Matt Emmons. We're also talking to
- 2:20Speaker 1: Colorado Wildlife Officer Demi Wright, who recently wrapped up a
- 2:24Speaker 1: big poaching case involving your mule deer. Then we'll look
- 2:29Speaker 1: at photos of ourselves from about twenty years ago, and
- 2:33Speaker 1: as always, will answer questions from the live audience. But
- 2:36Speaker 1: first let's get a few updates from the worlds of
- 2:39Speaker 1: Seth Randall and yours truly on this fourth to the
- 2:44Speaker 1: last episode of Meat Eater Radio Live. Oh but don't fret.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Make Eater Radio Live is going to be replaced by
- 2:55Speaker 1: the Meet Eater News with Cruise Show. Now that's a
- 2:58Speaker 1: working title. Let's just I think.
- 2:59Speaker 5: Wait, Steve wants the title to be the news show
- 3:03Speaker 5: Meat Eater Colon the news show.
- 3:07Speaker 1: That doesn't sound great either, but you know he's the
- 3:09Speaker 1: boss and whatever he chooses, that'll be it. It's gonna
- 3:15Speaker 1: be so what you can expect out of that show
- 3:18Speaker 1: updates from the crew. Spencer came up with a good
- 3:21Speaker 1: thing that I like. It's like our news, your news
- 3:25Speaker 1: and the news, and what you can expect from that
- 3:28Speaker 1: would be like cruise stories, updates from us and then
- 3:32Speaker 1: kind of how we do stories, questions, corrections from you guys,
- 3:39Speaker 1: and then the news being like what really matters right
- 3:43Speaker 1: now in conservation news. So that'll be starting, I believe
- 3:47Speaker 1: March ninth, and it's gonna be a great show. What
- 3:52Speaker 1: else butcher and bamby hoodies. Can you see it? Yeah?
- 3:58Speaker 1: This is what I was pasterning Steve about because this
- 4:01Speaker 1: is his idea. In my opinion, It is one of
- 4:04Speaker 1: the best T shirt hoodie designs we've ever come up with.
- 4:09Speaker 1: I do like it because it takes a anti hunting idea,
- 4:15Speaker 1: this thing that was made up Bambi the movie, and
- 4:18Speaker 1: completely flips it upside down and makes it into a
- 4:22Speaker 1: pro hunting thing. Any thoughts on that?
- 4:25Speaker 3: Boys, It's beautiful.
- 4:27Speaker 1: I love it. It's a very subversive concept. What's all
- 4:31Speaker 1: it has always there? Yeah? Yeah, it's just like your
- 4:36Speaker 1: classic butchering chart of a deer ribs shoulder, but it
- 4:41Speaker 1: just uses Bambi.
- 4:44Speaker 3: As it.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Who those are going to sell like hotcakes?
- 4:47Speaker 4: Ye?
- 4:48Speaker 5: Have our Have any lawyers from the Walt Disney Company
- 4:50Speaker 5: reached out to us about somebody I don't know. I
- 4:53Speaker 5: don't know, and I don't think he is. Baby's a boy, right, Yes,
- 5:00Speaker 5: that's a buck.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Maybe if we don't talk about that aspect of it,
- 5:04Speaker 3: it will just go unnoticed by yeah.
- 5:06Speaker 1: A giant. I'm so sorry. Anyways, the hoodies just pop
- 5:14Speaker 1: just landed on the website. Uh, y'all should get one
- 5:18Speaker 1: and wear it proudly and then make sure you can
- 5:20Speaker 1: speak about what's going on here. That's what I was
- 5:22Speaker 1: bothering Steve about this morning. He says, call me when
- 5:26Speaker 1: he texts me, and then I said, no, just come
- 5:28Speaker 1: down to the studio and he replies, I'm on a call. Yeah,
- 5:32Speaker 1: how is that gonna work? Okay, enough about hoodies, Randall,
- 5:38Speaker 1: looks like what you've got going on in your life
- 5:42Speaker 1: is uh, Well, first, let's let's hit the international shout out.
- 5:45Speaker 1: We have our we have our favorite well I don't
- 5:47Speaker 1: know is the our I think our favorite international, Like
- 5:51Speaker 1: guess is.
- 5:53Speaker 3: What the most the I mean? I think he has
- 5:55Speaker 3: a perfect attendance record. If this were high school, he'd
- 5:59Speaker 3: be recognized at the end of your assembly. But someone
- 6:02Speaker 3: pointed out to me that he's not the only international
- 6:05Speaker 3: listener out there. So we want to give a big
- 6:06Speaker 3: shout out to Dan Hernandez, who's currently stationed in the
- 6:09Speaker 3: UK tuning into mediater Radio Live.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Shout out Dan, thanks for tuning in.
- 6:16Speaker 5: Dan, Dan, if you're in the chat, let us know.
- 6:17Speaker 5: If not, why did you lie to us.
- 6:22Speaker 1: The truth?
- 6:22Speaker 3: He seems like a good guy. We traded some traded
- 6:25Speaker 3: some messages on the IG. Seems like a real real
- 6:28Speaker 3: good guy. So I just want to give a big
- 6:30Speaker 3: shout out to Dan, and then the big news in
- 6:32Speaker 3: my household is uh. When I left this morning, it
- 6:35Speaker 3: was my last time saying goodbye for the day to Dolly,
- 6:40Speaker 3: our five year old dog. She's not dying. She's turning
- 6:43Speaker 3: six tomorrow.
- 6:44Speaker 1: You really, I didn't.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Deliberately set that up. No, she's turning six tomorrow. So
- 6:49Speaker 3: today's the last day with a five year old dog
- 6:51Speaker 3: in the house. Tomorrow we have a we'll have a
- 6:54Speaker 3: six year old dog and two ten year olds soon
- 6:56Speaker 3: to be eleven year old. So I basically feel like
- 6:59Speaker 3: I have three loaded guns pointing at my head because
- 7:01Speaker 3: when you get into the big breeds, I feel like
- 7:04Speaker 3: every years, every year past, you know, like six seven
- 7:08Speaker 3: is real, precious.
- 7:09Speaker 1: So I was gonna say past ten, Yeah, you feel
- 7:12Speaker 1: like it's past six that.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I feel like labs. I feel like the
- 7:15Speaker 3: laboratory labs can can can take a quick turn down hill.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Geez, what do you feel like a blue tick coonhound?
- 7:21Speaker 3: Sure, I don't know. You run them hot. I don't
- 7:24Speaker 3: know if that's good for the engine or bad for
- 7:25Speaker 3: the engine. You know, some engines like to be run hot.
- 7:27Speaker 3: I'd guess that a blue tick coonhound probably that's.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Probably good for mingus.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Yeah, but I don't know. I mean, these are just
- 7:34Speaker 3: these are just fluffy. So, yeah, Dolly's turning six huge.
- 7:37Speaker 3: She's kind of got a weird personality.
- 7:39Speaker 1: She was a COVID dog.
- 7:41Speaker 3: We thought what better time to raise a third dog
- 7:44Speaker 3: than when we were forced to stay at home for
- 7:47Speaker 3: a few months. But then she didn't really get socialized
- 7:51Speaker 3: and so she she's got a lot going on in
- 7:54Speaker 3: her own head with herself.
- 7:56Speaker 1: How will you all celebrate her birthday?
- 8:01Speaker 3: Typically we'll take her swimming at the river. That's what
- 8:04Speaker 3: she likes to do. She likes to just be active.
- 8:07Speaker 3: She's she's got like a she's a one hundred and
- 8:09Speaker 3: ten volt dog plugged into a two twenty outlet. And
- 8:13Speaker 3: so yeah, whatever we can do to just just wear out.
- 8:16Speaker 3: But yeah, it's a big day in our household. We
- 8:18Speaker 3: usually don't do a cake, but I'll often use a
- 8:22Speaker 3: you know, cheese whiz to write their ages on their food.
- 8:26Speaker 5: Yeah, and they enjoy that.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Yeah, it just depends on depends on how much time
- 8:31Speaker 3: we're investing each year in the celebration.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Okay, any imagine you'll have a couple of beers. Do
- 8:36Speaker 1: you ever like give him half a beer in the
- 8:39Speaker 1: in the water bowl.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Our first dog used to drink a lot. He uh,
- 8:48Speaker 3: he was when when he when we first had him,
- 8:52Speaker 3: we would take him to this brewery in Missoula called Byron,
- 8:56Speaker 3: and they have all these like old German guys came
- 9:00Speaker 3: over for the summer to like, you know, work on
- 9:03Speaker 3: the brewery and exchange They do, like exchange stuff with
- 9:07Speaker 3: German breweries. And these old guys loved to feed Arlow
- 9:10Speaker 3: beer when he was tiny, and he developed a real
- 9:13Speaker 3: taste for it. Thankfully he couldn't drive, so that was
- 9:17Speaker 3: never an issue. But he liked whiskey, he liked wine,
- 9:21Speaker 3: he liked beer, and died ten days shy of his
- 9:25Speaker 3: tenth birthday. But I don't think the booz had anything
- 9:27Speaker 3: to do with it. Sorry, this has gone way darker
- 9:31Speaker 3: than I I thought it was gonna be like a
- 9:34Speaker 3: This was gonna be a lighthearted celebration of Dolly's sixth birthday.
- 9:38Speaker 3: But really I've taken some We're just talking about more
- 9:41Speaker 3: turns here.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you know, well we all know. That's the
- 9:44Speaker 1: the worst part about dogs is that they die.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Oh it kills me.
- 9:49Speaker 1: What does cal call it prolonged suffering or something? I
- 9:52Speaker 1: don't know. When you get a dog because.
- 9:54Speaker 5: You just know they're gonna die.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Oh yeah, see we had like Mingus is really my
- 9:59Speaker 1: first dog as an adult. Like I married my wife
- 10:03Speaker 1: and she had a dog, and so yeah, of course
- 10:05Speaker 1: I adopted her, but I still you know, didn't feel
- 10:08Speaker 1: that attached. Yeah, so yeah, this is uh, I'll be
- 10:12Speaker 1: going through it. According to Randall, maybe in just a
- 10:14Speaker 1: year or two.
- 10:16Speaker 3: I don't know. I just life is a degenerative process
- 10:19Speaker 3: biologically speaking.
- 10:20Speaker 1: So yes, yes, yes, uh ant let's talk about life, Seth.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I'm sure you're talking about this all the time these days.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Oh God, you're gonna be a dad soon. How's that
- 10:34Speaker 1: all coming along? Five weeks out the wife, that's it, Yeah.
- 10:38Speaker 4: Mackerel Kelsey is very uncomfortable and sleeping poorly, but she
- 10:43Speaker 4: feels good, like you know, she's not she's not struggling
- 10:47Speaker 4: with like how she feels. It's just like a like
- 10:50Speaker 4: a she's not sleeping well thing that's really struggle.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Yeah at this point, yeah, yeah, she's probably just ready
- 10:56Speaker 1: for it to be over. Get on out.
- 10:58Speaker 5: Our first was two weeks there, so closer than man.
- 11:02Speaker 4: Everyone we talked to is like we had ours in
- 11:05Speaker 4: thirty five weeks, you know, or or within like that
- 11:08Speaker 4: thirty five to forty week period, like it seems like
- 11:11Speaker 4: it could happen at any moment.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Yeah, so we're one time in a peer one imports
- 11:18Speaker 1: like nice, it's perfect.
- 11:21Speaker 5: Perfect date night.
- 11:22Speaker 3: We just finished up Watch.
- 11:27Speaker 1: I'm not saying that it was a date night. No. No,
- 11:29Speaker 1: we were looking for candles for the birth right we
- 11:32Speaker 1: were gonna have my oldest at home. We had both
- 11:35Speaker 1: ended up having both of them at home. Oh nice
- 11:37Speaker 1: and uh for whatever reason, like a lot of candles
- 11:40Speaker 1: is a thing when you have a home birth. And
- 11:41Speaker 1: so we're at Pier one getting some candles and we
- 11:45Speaker 1: were still like a solid week out. But you know,
- 11:47Speaker 1: you start having these little baby contractions and if you're
- 11:50Speaker 1: if you've been around pregnancies or then, when those early
- 11:55Speaker 1: contractions happen, you're like, oh yeah, okay, it's like your
- 11:57Speaker 1: body's practicing to get ready to give birth. Yeah. And
- 12:01Speaker 1: we're chatting with a lady and Jennifer girl, it's like,
- 12:03Speaker 1: oh wow, a little contraction there, and the girl looks
- 12:06Speaker 1: at us and it's like, please don't have that baby
- 12:09Speaker 1: in here. I'm like, come, it's not gonna happen. That
- 12:16Speaker 1: nice of a store. Yeah, are you cleaning something over there, Phil.
- 12:20Speaker 3: No, there's no they're using solvents in the new studio.
- 12:23Speaker 5: They're like tyle yeah, off the congrete.
- 12:27Speaker 3: Yeah it smells like I just uh it's I oftentimes
- 12:31Speaker 3: flood our garage with acid tone fumes and it lingers
- 12:33Speaker 3: for a few days, and I'm getting real strong vibes
- 12:35Speaker 3: of that.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Yeah. If you guys notice there while you're watching this
- 12:39Speaker 1: live show that we're all getting a little drowsy, sleepy,
- 12:41Speaker 1: please let us know.
- 12:44Speaker 5: Yeah, there's not a lot of ventilation in this room. Strong,
- 12:47Speaker 5: very strong, quite strong. It might be might just be
- 12:49Speaker 5: pumping it directly into this is this? Is this how
- 12:53Speaker 5: they get rid of this?
- 12:55Speaker 1: Yeah, guys have fun and radio line you can't leave.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 13:00Speaker 5: Yeah, just like in one Battle after I was just
- 13:02Speaker 5: I was gonna make that reference, but I wasn't sure
- 13:04Speaker 5: who hadn't seen the movie seth.
- 13:07Speaker 1: You've also been doing a little bit of ice fishing. Yeah,
- 13:10Speaker 1: what's the what's the ice fishing report? I mean ice
- 13:14Speaker 1: fishing reports not good. There's not much ice. There was
- 13:17Speaker 1: enough ice on Cane Ferry for which is the local
- 13:19Speaker 1: lake here for I don't know. I fished it twice,
- 13:24Speaker 1: but it's been fishing for two weeks or so, but
- 13:28Speaker 1: it's like it's just not the first time I fished,
- 13:33Speaker 1: it was a little sketchy, had about four inches of ice,
- 13:37Speaker 1: and it was moving a lot like pressure ridge pressure
- 13:41Speaker 1: ridges were building while we were there, and you know,
- 13:44Speaker 1: just not what you want and you couldn't really get
- 13:46Speaker 1: to the stuff we wanted to get to out further.
- 13:49Speaker 1: But then last weekend we hit it and had a
- 13:52Speaker 1: good walleye bite which was fun, kind of like a
- 13:56Speaker 1: morning walleye bite. And then.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's kind of done now we've had
- 14:03Speaker 4: because they just warmed up too a warm week and
- 14:06Speaker 4: it's supposed to be sixty degrees today. Now is it
- 14:10Speaker 4: early enough where it could turn around again or is
- 14:13Speaker 4: it now You're like, eh, halfway through February, it's pretty
- 14:16Speaker 4: much no matter what happens, is done. No, it could
- 14:19Speaker 4: definitely turn around again and get cold and make ice
- 14:22Speaker 4: enough to fish, But at this point in time, I'm like,
- 14:27Speaker 4: let's bring on open water and get a boat, right,
- 14:31Speaker 4: just kind of over watching the.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Weather for ice.
- 14:36Speaker 4: But there's still places around where there's guys skating on
- 14:41Speaker 4: the pond out back here this morning there's obviously enough
- 14:44Speaker 4: ice there, But I don't know, fishing these little ponds
- 14:48Speaker 4: around here kind of gets old after a while.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:50Speaker 1: I want to get out some big water school kids. Yeah, yeah,
- 14:54Speaker 1: the high school kids, the hardcore. Is it love pounding
- 14:56Speaker 1: the local ponds. Oh, I know Jimmy Rennello has been
- 14:58Speaker 1: tearing it up. Yeah, yeah, I heard he had. I
- 15:01Speaker 1: heard from his little sister, and I haven't got corroborated
- 15:05Speaker 1: with Steven, but I heard that he was like having
- 15:08Speaker 1: hypothermic symptoms from being Oh yeah, I have recent ice
- 15:11Speaker 1: fishing trip. You heard the story.
- 15:12Speaker 5: Yeah, he told me about it.
- 15:13Speaker 1: He was on a sound legit. Uh.
- 15:16Speaker 4: Yeah, he said they were fishing for burbot and night fishing.
- 15:24Speaker 4: Apparently the temperature was over that that period of time
- 15:27Speaker 4: when we got that cold snap. Yeah and yeah, apparently
- 15:30Speaker 4: the temperatures dropped into negatives and you got hypothermia.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Yeah. I heard that his his partners were getting ready
- 15:37Speaker 1: to take him to the emergency room because of his
- 15:39Speaker 1: he was being so symptomatic. Oh, he didn't tell me
- 15:41Speaker 1: that part. Yeah. Speaking of a place where it is
- 15:46Speaker 1: really cold right now and they're having a heck of
- 15:48Speaker 1: a winner, Wisconsin, a little update on my oak savannah project.
- 15:55Speaker 1: If you don't know, if you haven't heard this, we're
- 15:58Speaker 1: turning about seven eight of our forty in Wisconsin into
- 16:03Speaker 1: an oak savannah, which basically meant we cut out a
- 16:06Speaker 1: lot of trees with a logging project, left a few,
- 16:09Speaker 1: and then instead of regenerating oaks there, we instead killed
- 16:13Speaker 1: all the oaks and everything else that was going to
- 16:14Speaker 1: grow there and are now going to try to grow
- 16:20Speaker 1: forbes and native grasses instead. Underneath the few oaks that
- 16:25Speaker 1: are left, and the part of the project where we
- 16:29Speaker 1: were at we had piled all of the slash that
- 16:32Speaker 1: was left over from the logging, and these giant piles
- 16:35Speaker 1: had to get burned. I couldn't do it since one
- 16:38Speaker 1: thousand miles away, and I needed help. So a friend
- 16:41Speaker 1: of mine, Ashley Stinky, from the He is the Wisconsin
- 16:45Speaker 1: Grassland Collegist for the Audubon Great Lakes and leads the
- 16:49Speaker 1: Audubon Conservation ranching program in Wisconsin, and so he offered
- 16:54Speaker 1: to burn these piles for me, which I had have
- 16:57Speaker 1: roughly thirty of hanging out and they're giant piles, like
- 17:00Speaker 1: easily the size of the studio that we're in right now.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Go ahead and show us some pictures film. Yeah, do
- 17:07Speaker 1: you want to do that first picture? Yeah, there's a
- 17:09Speaker 1: picture of Ashley with a big old fire going behind him.
- 17:13Speaker 1: You can see the size of the pile. It's legit.
- 17:17Speaker 1: So we had to get these things burned so that
- 17:20Speaker 1: we have like a clear space to then do our seating,
- 17:24Speaker 1: which is going to happen very soon. Here we're going
- 17:26Speaker 1: to do a frost seeding, which basically means they just
- 17:29Speaker 1: sprinkle the seeds all over while they still have you know,
- 17:32Speaker 1: snow and basically a free staw cycle which will help
- 17:35Speaker 1: the seeds get great contact with the ground. Go ahead
- 17:39Speaker 1: and show those three Moultree photos in a row. So
- 17:43Speaker 1: this is the day that he burned. There's we have
- 17:46Speaker 1: a stand kind of on this wildlife opening. The oaksavana
- 17:49Speaker 1: is actually to the north, but you can see this
- 17:51Speaker 1: is like well eleven am. And then a little bit
- 17:55Speaker 1: later Ashley's got them all burning, and then by I
- 17:59Speaker 1: think three thirty four in the next photo, you can oh, no,
- 18:03Speaker 1: already by that was only at noon. Well, that happened fast.
- 18:07Speaker 1: So they continue to burn and they the piles got
- 18:10Speaker 1: even a little bit smaller, as you'll see in the
- 18:12Speaker 1: video coming up here. But I was asking Ashley. I'm like, man,
- 18:18Speaker 1: you can't this is going to take a couple of
- 18:19Speaker 1: days and you can't just take time off of work.
- 18:21Speaker 1: And he's like, oh no, I will be working while
- 18:24Speaker 1: I'm doing this, Like, but we don't have like a
- 18:25Speaker 1: contract or anything, and he goes, yeah, man, but our
- 18:28Speaker 1: our our sort of attitude at the autumn on society
- 18:31Speaker 1: is like if it's good for the birds, it's good
- 18:33Speaker 1: for the best sort of like meaning like we don't
- 18:35Speaker 1: have a project with you, but what you're doing like
- 18:39Speaker 1: helps the whole landscape around here, and it just it
- 18:43Speaker 1: has an impact. And so gladly come up and help
- 18:46Speaker 1: you and put some of my work times into your project. Yeah.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Can you show that video, Phil of the the first
- 18:53Speaker 1: one here? Yeah, this is still when they're un pretty good.
- 18:59Speaker 7: Ones on the very cell facing hillside. Oh I can
- 19:08Speaker 7: think of is large scale landscape level restoration like this
- 19:15Speaker 7: and sitting here in September and listening to elp Bugle
- 19:20Speaker 7: in this landscape of a good day.
- 19:26Speaker 1: We can we spend enough time on this. We don't
- 19:28Speaker 1: need to play that other one. But the next video
- 19:31Speaker 1: would just show all those piles basically being a lot smaller,
- 19:34Speaker 1: and it's it's cool for me. You guys are just
- 19:38Speaker 1: looking at like basically bonfires and going like why is
- 19:41Speaker 1: this really that interesting? But for someone that's been involved
- 19:44Speaker 1: in this project now for two years and knowing that
- 19:46Speaker 1: the end is really well, there is no end to it,
- 19:49Speaker 1: but sort of like hopefully it looks like the oak
- 19:51Speaker 1: Savannah that it's in my head in about another three years,
- 19:55Speaker 1: because it's going to take three years for these seeds
- 19:58Speaker 1: to really establish themselves and get going. But just the
- 20:01Speaker 1: change from what it looked like when I was there
- 20:03Speaker 1: in the fall with all these giant piles and now
- 20:05Speaker 1: to see those piles gone and you can really get
- 20:08Speaker 1: that sort of just like unobstructed view across those seven
- 20:12Speaker 1: acres and just looking through like the few leftover giant oaks,
- 20:15Speaker 1: it's sweet. Yeah, it's cool. I'd major fomo when Ashley
- 20:19Speaker 1: was there the other day. Do you guys have plans
- 20:21Speaker 1: to keep burning that area?
- 20:23Speaker 7: Oh?
- 20:24Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah yeah a big part of my work
- 20:28Speaker 1: now is making sure that my fire breaks and my
- 20:32Speaker 1: roads act as fire breaks. And I got that dialed
- 20:35Speaker 1: so that when it's time to burn, whether I do
- 20:37Speaker 1: it or you know, someone else I was talking to
- 20:39Speaker 1: Ashley about like having someone else do it, and it's
- 20:41Speaker 1: a lot cheaper if they roll in and your shit
- 20:45Speaker 1: is tight and your fire breaks are tight, and they're
- 20:48Speaker 1: just like, oh great, we're just gonna burn and we leave.
- 20:50Speaker 1: If they have to start doing you know, manual labor
- 20:53Speaker 1: to make your fire breaks, legit, it's gonna you know,
- 20:56Speaker 1: the price is going up big time. All right, enough, Bsen,
- 21:01Speaker 1: let's get on with our first interview of the morning.
- 21:04Speaker 1: We're gonna play a little video before we start.
- 21:07Speaker 8: Oh yeah, when I'm skiing into the range, there's a
- 21:11Speaker 8: lot going through my head. In thirty seconds, it feels
- 21:16Speaker 8: like the race could change. Hands are freezy, snowpeppers all.
- 21:21Speaker 8: I'm a her right's eye magazine in close the action, fumble,
- 21:23Speaker 8: slow it down, focus pressure, I'm a trigger, don't fight.
- 21:29Speaker 2: It smooths for.
- 21:31Speaker 8: Shot, clean, second shot, on the last, jaws, third fourth.
- 21:38Speaker 8: Sometimes I'm not even really thinking. It all goes silent,
- 21:44Speaker 8: and after that last shot, it all comes rushing back, breathing, heartbeat, noise,
- 21:52Speaker 8: and I'm not even on snow yet.
- 21:54Speaker 1: This is Bathlon Wait. Our first guest today joining us
- 22:02Speaker 1: from and Holts, Italy, are by athletes Paul Schamer and
- 22:06Speaker 1: Matt Emmons. Now Matt might not consider himself I'm guessing
- 22:10Speaker 1: he's still skis as a bad athlete in some version,
- 22:15Speaker 1: but he is Paul's coach. Now, welcome to the show, fellas.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Hey, nice, nice to join you guys.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Good there that The first time I watched that video,
- 22:29Speaker 1: I was likedow, man, he's just he's not even on snow.
- 22:31Speaker 1: But when I just watched it, for whatever reason, man,
- 22:33Speaker 1: it kind of got me fired fired up and I
- 22:35Speaker 1: was feeling the pressure that you feel when you're out
- 22:37Speaker 1: there trying to shoot those little targets. All right, fellas, welcome.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Like I said, uh, for those that don't know, can
- 22:45Speaker 1: you guys just give us a thirty second explanation of
- 22:48Speaker 1: what biathlon is.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:52Speaker 8: So, I think just to start, I think it's what's
- 22:55Speaker 8: really cool about Bathlon is I think it's really connected
- 22:57Speaker 8: to a lot of things that make us that we
- 23:00Speaker 8: hold dear to us as humans, which I think are
- 23:02Speaker 8: one hunting and two protecting and providing.
- 23:06Speaker 2: For those that we love.
- 23:07Speaker 8: Because it was really came about from people in northern
- 23:11Speaker 8: Scandinavia back in the day, hunting on snow in the winter,
- 23:15Speaker 8: on skis and then eventually got turned into a border
- 23:18Speaker 8: patrol during World War two and then and then basically
- 23:22Speaker 8: from that practice, they had some mini competitions and that's
- 23:27Speaker 8: what turned into Bathlon. Bathlon is versus foremost a race.
- 23:31Speaker 8: So the clock starts when you leave the start and
- 23:34Speaker 8: ends when you cross the finish line, and it's a
- 23:37Speaker 8: ski race where you stop and you have shootings either
- 23:40Speaker 8: two or four different shootings.
- 23:41Speaker 2: From an equal amount of.
- 23:44Speaker 8: Prone and standing. So if you have a two shooting race,
- 23:46Speaker 8: it's one prone, one standing. A four shooting race it's
- 23:49Speaker 8: two prone, two standing. And for every mistarget you have
- 23:54Speaker 8: a penalty, either by having the ski of penalty loop
- 23:56Speaker 8: or a time penalty. And so it's all about skiing fast,
- 24:01Speaker 8: being efficient on the range and any targets.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Okay, obviously heart rate must play just like a huge,
- 24:09Speaker 1: huge it's gotta be a huge factor in like being
- 24:11Speaker 1: able to execute what you're doing. So tell me before
- 24:15Speaker 1: we get in, like how you do it, but like
- 24:16Speaker 1: what's your like resting heart rate. Then you're like racing
- 24:20Speaker 1: when you're on skis, and then the heart rate that
- 24:23Speaker 1: you're trying to actually when you're shooting, what you're trying
- 24:26Speaker 1: to get your heart rate too.
- 24:29Speaker 8: Yeah, so I mean resting heart rate. I would say
- 24:33Speaker 8: most nights I'm in the low thirties. So I'd say, like,
- 24:37Speaker 8: if I'm in like a good spot and I'm looking up,
- 24:40Speaker 8: I'll have my heart rate. I have an OR ring,
- 24:44Speaker 8: but the OI ring only tracks to thirty three, and
- 24:47Speaker 8: so there'll be sometimes or I'll be under that and
- 24:49Speaker 8: there'll be like gaps in it. And then heart rate
- 24:51Speaker 8: variability is another one that you look at for recovery
- 24:54Speaker 8: on the range.
- 24:55Speaker 2: I have a pretty low heart rate.
- 24:57Speaker 8: In this grand scheme of things when it comes like
- 25:00Speaker 8: max alright, so my max herrate is probably going to
- 25:02Speaker 8: be like one seventy five throughout the season, whereas like
- 25:06Speaker 8: some competitors they'll be up over two hundred.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Okay, And then so that's your max. When you're skiing
- 25:14Speaker 1: and you're going full bore. What's the heart rate that
- 25:17Speaker 1: you're trying to be at when you're trying to make
- 25:20Speaker 1: these shots?
- 25:22Speaker 2: Oh?
- 25:23Speaker 8: Man, I mean, honestly, I don't really look at my
- 25:25Speaker 8: heart rate too much. I think that the breathing is
- 25:29Speaker 8: what I really focus on, mostly because that's kind of
- 25:32Speaker 8: like the anchor of focus sometimes, so you like control
- 25:35Speaker 8: your breathing, because you can control your breathing or is
- 25:37Speaker 8: your heart rate is kind of like kind of like
- 25:39Speaker 8: all right, heart's gonna do what it wants. I would
- 25:43Speaker 8: say I'm probably shooting around one hundred and fifty beats
- 25:47Speaker 8: per minute most times that I'm I'm on the range
- 25:50Speaker 8: or more.
- 25:53Speaker 1: For those of you at home, like, I don't know
- 25:55Speaker 1: if you can even get to one hundred and fifty
- 25:57Speaker 1: beats a minute, but like, go ahead and try shooting
- 25:59Speaker 1: a gun at accurately with your heart doing one hundred
- 26:02Speaker 1: and fifty beats a minute. That's insane, all right, Paul,
- 26:07Speaker 1: Because we've interviewed you before on the show, not on
- 26:10Speaker 1: this show, but on the Mediator podcast. So I have
- 26:15Speaker 1: an idea of like the things that you've been through.
- 26:17Speaker 1: I follow you on Instagram, give us the sort of
- 26:21Speaker 1: rundown of the hurdles. I was talking with recently the
- 26:27Speaker 1: one of the main folks over at cross Cut, which
- 26:29Speaker 1: is Bozeman's biathlete sort of center shooting center, and I
- 26:34Speaker 1: mentioned your name and she's like, yeah, that guy has
- 26:37Speaker 1: been through more to get to what he's getting to
- 26:40Speaker 1: do now than like anybody else I know. I mean
- 26:43Speaker 1: it's just like, it's amazing, So give us a short
- 26:45Speaker 1: rundown of like the hurdles that you've had to go
- 26:47Speaker 1: through to be able to race this next week.
- 26:53Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, I think that.
- 26:55Speaker 8: When I was last sitting in your guys at studio
- 26:58Speaker 8: in twenty twenty two, I was asked the question like, oh,
- 27:01Speaker 8: how much long are you gonna go? And at that
- 27:02Speaker 8: point I was kind of like, I don't really know,
- 27:06Speaker 8: and I didn't really see myself competing for another four years,
- 27:10Speaker 8: and I think that decision was almost kind of made
- 27:12Speaker 8: for me. In twenty twenty three, I had a knee
- 27:17Speaker 8: injury that I actually had to get a knee surgery,
- 27:20Speaker 8: so I had to finish my season early, came home,
- 27:22Speaker 8: got surgery, rehabbed back from that surgery, made a full
- 27:28Speaker 8: come back, qualified for the World Cup. Was at the
- 27:30Speaker 8: pre World Cup camp in Finland, and my knee just
- 27:35Speaker 8: totally blew up, like just I didn't know what was
- 27:38Speaker 8: going on. I thought maybe it was just the travel
- 27:40Speaker 8: with some other things wasn't getting better. So I ended
- 27:44Speaker 8: up flying home from Finland, and at that point, not
- 27:49Speaker 8: only was I having some knee issues, I was actually
- 27:51Speaker 8: having a lot of other stuff going on in my
- 27:53Speaker 8: personal life as well. And I just remember sitting across
- 27:56Speaker 8: the table from my coach when I was in Finland
- 27:58Speaker 8: and just saying, like, I'm going home and I don't
- 28:01Speaker 8: know when I'm coming back, because like it just seemed
- 28:06Speaker 8: like everything was pretty chaotic at that point. I ended
- 28:09Speaker 8: up going home and I realized that my knee had
- 28:11Speaker 8: re injured itself, so I had to get a second
- 28:12Speaker 8: knee surgery. And basically what happened was the first surgery,
- 28:16Speaker 8: the injury that they had repaired just had failed, and
- 28:20Speaker 8: I was right back to where I was and it
- 28:23Speaker 8: was a knee scope, so they're like, hey, you should
- 28:25Speaker 8: be good to like ski pretty soon, and my knee
- 28:29Speaker 8: just was not responding. I would ski for about thirty minutes,
- 28:32Speaker 8: my knee would be swollen for two days. And so
- 28:35Speaker 8: at that point, I was like, I don't even know
- 28:37Speaker 8: if I can compete, much less if I want to compete.
- 28:42Speaker 8: And that kind of like put me in a really
- 28:44Speaker 8: interesting spot because it was kind of like maybe the
- 28:45Speaker 8: decision was made for me. I felt like my life
- 28:49Speaker 8: at that point was maybe steering me in a different direction.
- 28:51Speaker 8: Priorities that came that come before sport were things that
- 28:56Speaker 8: I think I was prioritizing at that time. But as
- 29:01Speaker 8: that year unfolded, Uh again, I think some some decisions
- 29:05Speaker 8: were made for me, maybe decisions that I would have
- 29:08Speaker 8: made for myself, and I ultimately felt like I should train,
- 29:12Speaker 8: train back. I went down to Stedman Clinic in Colorado
- 29:16Speaker 8: because my knee wasn't responding, and they said that I
- 29:18Speaker 8: should get another knee surgery, but they were gonna put
- 29:20Speaker 8: metal in my my knee, and I was just not
- 29:23Speaker 8: ready to put metal in my knee at my age.
- 29:25Speaker 8: It would have just kind of started me down another
- 29:27Speaker 8: path that I didn't really feel like was necessary. And uh,
- 29:33Speaker 8: I actually kind of started to get back into training
- 29:36Speaker 8: and then got to a point where I was like, man,
- 29:37Speaker 8: I finally feel like my knees responding.
- 29:39Speaker 2: I can train enough to be able to get back
- 29:41Speaker 2: to a high level.
- 29:43Speaker 8: And I really don't know what happened other than maybe
- 29:47Speaker 8: my body responded in such a way that I was
- 29:49Speaker 8: able to get back and slowly made my way back
- 29:53Speaker 8: at that time. Because I didn't compete that year before,
- 29:55Speaker 8: I was left off the national team, so I didn't
- 29:58Speaker 8: have any support from the national team. I lost my
- 30:00Speaker 8: health insurance, I was just training on my own and
- 30:04Speaker 8: thankfully was able to requalify for the team this past year.
- 30:08Speaker 8: Had to work my way back up through the ranks.
- 30:11Speaker 8: Was at World Championships and qualified for that basically like
- 30:16Speaker 8: last minute. I missed a lot of other chaotic things
- 30:20Speaker 8: going on, and that that makes me being here in
- 30:24Speaker 8: Italy right now talking to you guys something that I'm
- 30:28Speaker 8: like really grateful for because I definitely don't take it
- 30:31Speaker 8: for granted. There's plenty of things that could have derailed
- 30:33Speaker 8: me along the way and makes it makes it really
- 30:36Speaker 8: special to be able to compete this winter.
- 30:39Speaker 1: Awesome. Okay, so you I don't know if I'm gonna
- 30:42Speaker 1: phrase this properly, but like what you made it to
- 30:45Speaker 1: the Olympics, which I think is you know, for most
- 30:47Speaker 1: of most people that that would be in of itself
- 30:50Speaker 1: like and it isn't amazing.
- 30:51Speaker 3: For everybody, just just generalize anybody.
- 30:55Speaker 1: It's an amazing accomplishment. But obviously you got a little
- 30:59Speaker 1: bit more ger in you than most of us. So
- 31:01Speaker 1: you're here, what's like, what is your focus set on?
- 31:05Speaker 9: Now?
- 31:06Speaker 1: What's your goal that you're there now?
- 31:12Speaker 8: Well, I think like for this year, I've set the
- 31:14Speaker 8: goal for myself top ten at the Olympics. I've gone
- 31:18Speaker 8: top ten at this venue before on the World Cup,
- 31:22Speaker 8: and so that's something that I've.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Really thought of.
- 31:24Speaker 8: I think another goal for our entire team that we
- 31:27Speaker 8: have and something that we hear about all the time
- 31:30Speaker 8: at the Olympics is Blatlon is the only winter sport
- 31:32Speaker 8: the US is yet to medal in at the Winter Olympics,
- 31:35Speaker 8: and it's kind of dubbed the last first medal, and
- 31:38Speaker 8: so I think our goal is really to see the
- 31:40Speaker 8: US win that that medal. I think we have some
- 31:44Speaker 8: chances in individual events, especially with my my teammate Campbell,
- 31:47Speaker 8: who last year won two silver medals at World Championships.
- 31:49Speaker 8: But we've been forth a couple of times in relays
- 31:52Speaker 8: this year on the on the World Cup, So I
- 31:55Speaker 8: think we really have our sites set on hopefully bringing
- 31:57Speaker 8: home that last first medal.
- 32:00Speaker 1: It listen, man, if you're telling me that you're you're
- 32:02Speaker 1: playing on possibly breaking top ten, I immediately think, well, if
- 32:06Speaker 1: he can do that, he could also go podium. Likely
- 32:09Speaker 1: that's only a few spots. And I know that you
- 32:11Speaker 1: guys know way more about this than I do, but yeah,
- 32:15Speaker 1: all right, awesome. I love to hear it. Let's talk
- 32:17Speaker 1: a little bit about how this biathon business uh like
- 32:22Speaker 1: relates to hunting. Matt, I was told that you actually
- 32:26Speaker 1: have hunted Shammy in the valley that you guys are
- 32:31Speaker 1: are compete well, that Paul is competing in this week.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Is that right? Yeah?
- 32:37Speaker 10: Yeah, Actually I've been here four different times hunting for Shammy.
- 32:40Speaker 10: It's a beautiful valley. I call it like my second home.
- 32:42Speaker 10: Even though it's not just love coming here. I love
- 32:45Speaker 10: mountain hunting and I've lived in Europe now for thirteen
- 32:48Speaker 10: years and one of the things I missed about living
- 32:51Speaker 10: out west in the US was just mountain hunting, and
- 32:54Speaker 10: so I got an opportunity to be able to come
- 32:55Speaker 10: here and hunt Shammy and it's it's just awesome. So
- 32:58Speaker 10: I wasn't able to do it this past but hopefully
- 33:00Speaker 10: that's coming, you're I'll be able to do.
- 33:02Speaker 1: What does a hamp? Is that what you guys call it? Shammy?
- 33:05Speaker 1: Or do you do you pronounce it shamois?
- 33:09Speaker 6: I say shammy. Don't know that's right or not.
- 33:11Speaker 1: But yeah, so, like what's a shammy hunt in that area?
- 33:16Speaker 1: Look like just gives a real quick rundown of like
- 33:19Speaker 1: a normal mourning Shammy hunt.
- 33:22Speaker 6: So all of my hunts actually have been mourning hunts.
- 33:25Speaker 2: Pretty much.
- 33:25Speaker 10: What we do is we get up before before sun up,
- 33:28Speaker 10: get up in the mountains. Usually we drive up with
- 33:30Speaker 10: a car up to a certain point.
- 33:32Speaker 6: And then you got a hike.
- 33:33Speaker 10: And sometimes it could be, you know, maybe just a
- 33:35Speaker 10: fifteen minute hike to get to a spot where you're
- 33:37Speaker 10: going to be spotting, or it could be a longer hike.
- 33:41Speaker 10: One year, we actually did go into about midday, so
- 33:44Speaker 10: we were moving around trying to spot some animals. This
- 33:47Speaker 10: isn't what we're looking for, Let's go over here. And
- 33:49Speaker 10: then we found some different ones. Not what we're looking for,
- 33:52Speaker 10: Let's go over here. So it took a little bit longer.
- 33:53Speaker 10: But once you get one down, usually you're up above
- 33:57Speaker 10: above two thousand meters, which is over six thousand feet.
- 34:00Speaker 10: I'm up above tree line. So once you get it down,
- 34:03Speaker 10: then it's you know, a matter of gutting it, put
- 34:04Speaker 10: it in a backpack hole. They put it in the
- 34:07Speaker 10: backpack hole. They don't cut it up because the only
- 34:09Speaker 10: weigh about probably sixty sixty five pounds roughly.
- 34:13Speaker 6: Put it in the backpack and then you're hiking back down.
- 34:15Speaker 10: So it could be, you know, a short hike depending
- 34:17Speaker 10: on where you parked, or it could be a fairly
- 34:19Speaker 10: long hike.
- 34:19Speaker 6: I mean, nothing like elk hunting in Colorado or something.
- 34:22Speaker 1: But sure, you know, you.
- 34:23Speaker 6: Get down and take it to the cooler where we
- 34:26Speaker 6: go and let it hang.
- 34:27Speaker 1: Are they pretty spooky critters? Or like, how sneaky do
- 34:31Speaker 1: you have to be to get within rifle range?
- 34:35Speaker 10: They see really well, So it depends on where where
- 34:38Speaker 10: you're at. Last year will not last year the year
- 34:40Speaker 10: before last. I don't know if that one was just
- 34:43Speaker 10: stupid or whatever, but we actually went across this opening
- 34:46Speaker 10: where he could see us, and I got to about
- 34:47Speaker 10: three hundred and fifty yards and decided, okay, he's if
- 34:51Speaker 10: we go any closer, he's going to bust. So I
- 34:53Speaker 10: was able to take the shot and knock him down.
- 34:57Speaker 10: Depends on where you're at. There's a lot of times
- 35:00Speaker 10: where you're trying to sneak in, sneaking in to get
- 35:02Speaker 10: to rifle range or good rifle range, which I would
- 35:04Speaker 10: say is, you know, two fifty to three hundred yards.
- 35:07Speaker 10: The closest shot I've ever taken, he was probably about
- 35:08Speaker 10: two thirty. You gotta kind of sneak behind rocks, try
- 35:13Speaker 10: to keep yourself hidden because they see well. And especially
- 35:15Speaker 10: if you've got a big group of them, you know,
- 35:17Speaker 10: maybe there's ten animals there, you've got ten different sets
- 35:19Speaker 10: of eyes looking at you, then you've got to be
- 35:21Speaker 10: a little bit more careful, especially if there.
- 35:23Speaker 6: Are females in if they're females with little ones, then
- 35:26Speaker 6: then you got to be really careful to get in
- 35:28Speaker 6: on the buck.
- 35:30Speaker 1: I know both of you guys hunt a fair amount.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Are there times when you guys are actually in the field,
- 35:37Speaker 1: maybe right after a shot or getting ready to preparing
- 35:40Speaker 1: for a shot, where you have a thought where you're like, oh,
- 35:44Speaker 1: my biathlon training is really paying off.
- 35:51Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean for sure, I think the biggest thing
- 35:53Speaker 8: that I've noticed is that one, I'm fit enough to
- 35:57Speaker 8: be able to get places that I need to be,
- 35:59Speaker 8: which is like a a huge benefit. But yeah, I
- 36:03Speaker 8: think that there's been a few hunts, Like in Montana,
- 36:06Speaker 8: I was hunting the Missouri breaks and like, uh, we
- 36:09Speaker 8: just like found a spot and it was no problem
- 36:11Speaker 8: to hike in six six miles or whatever.
- 36:13Speaker 2: And I mean we were just on elk all day
- 36:15Speaker 2: every day. And then I think a couple.
- 36:17Speaker 8: Of years ago, I actually drew a moose tag in
- 36:20Speaker 8: North Dakota and hunting there. I think that like one
- 36:23Speaker 8: the persistence, just like waking up every single day as
- 36:26Speaker 8: an athlete, you just know like, hey, it's a new
- 36:27Speaker 8: opportunity and just.
- 36:30Speaker 2: Got to be in the game if we're gonna be there.
- 36:32Speaker 8: But then also like when that target shows up and
- 36:34Speaker 8: the heart rate goes up, I'm I'm just like, okay, yeah,
- 36:37Speaker 8: we're just like. Doesn't mean that my trigger has to
- 36:39Speaker 8: be any bit different, doesn't mean that my anchor points
- 36:42Speaker 8: my sites everything else. Like my my focus goes immediately
- 36:46Speaker 8: to the things that.
- 36:48Speaker 2: I want to do to to take a good shot.
- 36:50Speaker 2: And I think a lot of that.
- 36:51Speaker 8: Comes from the fact that like I shoot tens of
- 36:53Speaker 8: thousands of rounds every single year, yeah with a rifle,
- 36:57Speaker 8: whereas with my with my moose, I shot it with
- 36:59Speaker 8: my bow. But like shooting and shooting, and I think
- 37:02Speaker 8: that's the biggest thing as a bo athlete, Like I
- 37:04Speaker 8: just I know I'm a better shooter than than I
- 37:07Speaker 8: was when I was younger, and I wasn't shooting nearly
- 37:09Speaker 8: as much as I do now.
- 37:10Speaker 10: Well, I also think Paul, the mental part of it
- 37:12Speaker 10: because when you're we kind of go on autopilot. It's
- 37:15Speaker 10: like we've done this so much, whether it's in biathlon
- 37:18Speaker 10: or precision shooting, you've performed so often under pressure that
- 37:22Speaker 10: when we're hunting, you get to that moment and you
- 37:25Speaker 10: just do the things that you've been trained to do,
- 37:26Speaker 10: the things that you've done, you know, thousands and thousands
- 37:29Speaker 10: of times, so that that training comes in very helpful.
- 37:34Speaker 10: You just you don't even think about it. You just
- 37:36Speaker 10: do the work that needs to be done.
- 37:37Speaker 1: Right. Okay, so you guys both shot. I don't even
- 37:41Speaker 1: know you guys. Do you guys have a rough number
- 37:43Speaker 1: in your head about how many rounds of twenty two
- 37:46Speaker 1: l R you've you've put down range?
- 37:50Speaker 8: Well, I want to make a decision here. Matt is
- 37:52Speaker 8: a he was an Olympic shooter, and how many metals
- 37:55Speaker 8: do you have? So he has three shootings in just
- 37:58Speaker 8: uh three medals and just shooting. So that's I mean,
- 38:02Speaker 8: he he probably shoots more as an athlete than I do.
- 38:06Speaker 8: I probably shoot about fifteen to twenty thousand rounds of
- 38:08Speaker 8: twenty two a year.
- 38:09Speaker 6: Yeah it wasn't. I probably shout about maybe twenty five
- 38:12Speaker 6: thousand a year.
- 38:13Speaker 1: And how many years.
- 38:16Speaker 10: I competed for Gee Whiz over twenty years, So it's
- 38:20Speaker 10: it's it's a lot.
- 38:21Speaker 3: That's fabulous. Oh that's a lot. I love powder so
- 38:24Speaker 3: that your fingers still stink like powder.
- 38:27Speaker 1: I think for a real like a real take home
- 38:30Speaker 1: for folks watching and listening would be coming from you, guys,
- 38:35Speaker 1: like what are like each? Give me two reasons of why,
- 38:40Speaker 1: like what makes someone a I'm gonna use air quotes
- 38:43Speaker 1: a bad shot. Go ahead, Matt, you first.
- 38:47Speaker 10: All right, practice practice Everything comes down to practice.
- 38:54Speaker 6: I mean, aneso.
- 38:55Speaker 10: If you practice poor things, if you practice a lot,
- 38:58Speaker 10: you're doing it wrong. You're just gonna get good that
- 39:00Speaker 10: doing it wrong. So I think proper practice is number one.
- 39:04Speaker 10: A lot of people don't understand what proper technique is.
- 39:07Speaker 10: And it's as simple as position, breathing, trigger, control, follow through.
- 39:12Speaker 10: If you can do those things right, you're going to
- 39:13Speaker 10: hit a lot of targets or animals or whatever it
- 39:16Speaker 10: might be. So I think proper practice learning what proper
- 39:19Speaker 10: technique is and then just simply doing it doing.
- 39:22Speaker 6: It a lot.
- 39:24Speaker 1: Ball.
- 39:24Speaker 8: Yeah, And I think I think I like I see
- 39:28Speaker 8: it in I'm gonna say biath on and if I'm
- 39:31Speaker 8: watching hunting videos. Sometimes you see someone man, they're just
- 39:34Speaker 8: they don't have any good trigger work. And then they
- 39:37Speaker 8: also are just popping their head up to see if
- 39:39Speaker 8: they hit the target even before the shot goes off.
- 39:42Speaker 8: So like if your head's coming up before the recoil
- 39:44Speaker 8: goes you're more concerned about if you hit the animal.
- 39:48Speaker 8: I think that's a big thing. It's just having that
- 39:50Speaker 8: patience to be able to have that trigger squeeze, watch
- 39:52Speaker 8: it through the scope or your sites and see that
- 39:55Speaker 8: bullet hit the target.
- 39:56Speaker 2: I think that's a that's a huge one.
- 39:58Speaker 1: M It sounds like being a bad shot is not
- 40:01Speaker 1: an innate thing. Everybody just needs to shoot more, shoot
- 40:05Speaker 1: more often.
- 40:07Speaker 6: It's a skill, and I would say skills are trainable.
- 40:09Speaker 3: Yep.
- 40:10Speaker 1: Love that. Randall seth any questions for these fellas.
- 40:15Speaker 3: Man real quick. I don't I don't need the full
- 40:20Speaker 3: breakdown on your rifle, but it looks like it's a
- 40:22Speaker 3: straight poll a lot of stuff hanging off of it.
- 40:26Speaker 3: I'm curious if you could give us like the thirty
- 40:28Speaker 3: second rundown of what you compete with in terms of firearms.
- 40:32Speaker 3: And then also you must travel internationally with with your firearms.
- 40:36Speaker 3: Quite a bit, so I'm curious about that as well.
- 40:40Speaker 8: Yeah, so pretty much every single by athlete's gonna shoot
- 40:43Speaker 8: the exact same action in barrel. It's an on shoots
- 40:45Speaker 8: Fortner and it's just a straightfold action. Reason being is
- 40:50Speaker 8: because of that action and also a reliable good barrel.
- 40:54Speaker 8: There's amo testing and barrel testing that's done, so every
- 40:57Speaker 8: once in a while you'll have to get a new barrel.
- 41:00Speaker 8: But pretty much everybody's shooting the same thing. Where the
- 41:02Speaker 8: differentiating like factor is going to be for each athlete
- 41:06Speaker 8: is in the stock. Unfortunately, I don't have my rifle
- 41:09Speaker 8: here because they're all in rifle storage up at the venue.
- 41:12Speaker 2: Otherwise i'd be able to show you. But my stock,
- 41:14Speaker 2: I got a new one.
- 41:15Speaker 8: Back in twenty nineteen. It was made by a stockmaker
- 41:20Speaker 8: in Germany. He's kind of renowned as being one of
- 41:22Speaker 8: the best stock makers in the world. And it's all
- 41:24Speaker 8: about balance and fitting met anatomically my hands, eye, my arms,
- 41:31Speaker 8: my cheekbones, everything, and it's all open sites.
- 41:35Speaker 2: But then it weighs about three.
- 41:38Speaker 8: And a half kilos, just over seven pounds, and yeah,
- 41:43Speaker 8: and then you have a harness on so you can
- 41:45Speaker 8: put it on your back while you while your skiing. Now,
- 41:49Speaker 8: traveling with a rifle, honestly, as an American sometimes really
- 41:55Speaker 8: sucks because we don't have paperwork. Because all the Europeans
- 41:59Speaker 8: they all have rifle passport, so when they show up
- 42:01Speaker 8: to a country, they can show them their rifle passport.
- 42:03Speaker 8: They're like, okay, good you go. We show up here
- 42:06Speaker 8: and they're always asking us, oh, do you have like
- 42:08Speaker 8: your firearms license?
- 42:09Speaker 1: Do you have this?
- 42:10Speaker 8: And we're like, we're Americana that like my passport is
- 42:13Speaker 8: my firearm license? Like don't know what you're talking about.
- 42:15Speaker 11: And so a lot of times they're sitting there like, wait,
- 42:18Speaker 11: you don't have any But I'm like, usually what I
- 42:20Speaker 11: show them is just the customs form, the like four
- 42:22Speaker 11: four five seven, which is the form that allows you
- 42:26Speaker 11: to bring it back into the US.
- 42:27Speaker 8: And it's like oh okay cool. But so yeah, it
- 42:29Speaker 8: can be real pain. I would say, like South Korea
- 42:31Speaker 8: was a huge pain. China they didn't even let us
- 42:33Speaker 8: touch it. Like they took the rifles from the airport
- 42:36Speaker 8: and they put them in an armored vehicle and then
- 42:39Speaker 8: drove them to the venue for us. But once you
- 42:43Speaker 8: get in, it's it's pretty simple it's not not anything
- 42:47Speaker 8: crazy paperwork.
- 42:48Speaker 3: Cool.
- 42:49Speaker 4: What's the uh, what's the AMMO that you guys are shooting?
- 42:52Speaker 4: Is that like all factory stuff or someone like loading
- 42:55Speaker 4: that for you guys? And is everyone using the same ammo?
- 43:00Speaker 6: Yeah, that's all factory AMO.
- 43:02Speaker 10: So twenty two is it's not impossible to reload, but
- 43:05Speaker 10: nobody does it. Yeah, the way the priming system's done,
- 43:08Speaker 10: the powder and all that stuff. So most everyone on
- 43:10Speaker 10: the World Cup is using Lapua AMO and it's called
- 43:13Speaker 10: Lapua Polar Biathlon. This was a twenty two long rifle
- 43:17Speaker 10: round that was developed for shooting in cold temperature. So
- 43:20Speaker 10: it uses a different type of powder that's less sensitive
- 43:23Speaker 10: to temperature changes because whether it's you know, I don't know,
- 43:26Speaker 10: thirty five degrees fahrenheit or zero, we're using the same
- 43:30Speaker 10: stuff and we need to make sure that the velocity
- 43:32Speaker 10: is not going to change drastically as some other powders might.
- 43:36Speaker 6: That way we keep the accuracy.
- 43:38Speaker 10: It also has a special loob on the bullet which
- 43:39Speaker 10: functions better in cold weather. Most everyone's using the same stuff.
- 43:44Speaker 10: There are some teams that are using RWs now and
- 43:47Speaker 10: they've also developed a similar type of bullet and powder combination,
- 43:52Speaker 10: but most everyone uses lapula.
- 43:54Speaker 3: Nice love this.
- 43:56Speaker 1: Okay, lastly, tell us I guess what day your rate?
- 44:00Speaker 1: And I'm assuming that NBC Peacock is the best way,
- 44:04Speaker 1: but maybe there's another place on the internet to watch
- 44:07Speaker 1: your races. Paul.
- 44:09Speaker 8: Yeah, so we we have Bathlon has I think ten
- 44:15Speaker 8: race days in the in the Olympics. Here we have
- 44:20Speaker 8: that's gonna be split between both men's and women's. The
- 44:22Speaker 8: first race is going to be this Sunday, the mixed relay,
- 44:25Speaker 8: and then the men's individual is on Tuesday. The men's
- 44:29Speaker 8: sprint is on Friday, pursuit is on Sunday. Is it
- 44:34Speaker 8: Sunday Sunday? And then the relay is the next week
- 44:38Speaker 8: on the seventeenth, which I think is a Tuesday or Wednesday.
- 44:42Speaker 8: But yeah, you can find it all on Bathlon World
- 44:45Speaker 8: dot com or Bathlon Results dot com or on NBCM peacock.
- 44:50Speaker 1: Love it awesome, Thank you, well, good luck to you guys.
- 44:54Speaker 1: We'll be cheering you on from Bozeman, Montana. And you
- 44:59Speaker 1: say you stay, you stay you.
- 45:04Speaker 8: I want to share one last thing you guys, is
- 45:06Speaker 8: you say good luck. I think one thing that's really
- 45:08Speaker 8: cool here in Europe.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Or in Italy.
- 45:09Speaker 8: Specifically, if you're wishing someone luck, it's kind of a
- 45:12Speaker 8: call and response. Instead of just saying good luck, what
- 45:14Speaker 8: you would say is in bokopo to the person you're
- 45:17Speaker 8: wishing good luck, which means in the wolf's mouth, and
- 45:20Speaker 8: the person who respond preppy loopo, which means the wolf
- 45:22Speaker 8: is dead.
- 45:23Speaker 1: So preppy loopo and boco loopo in the wolf's mouth
- 45:30Speaker 1: and you respond with wolf is dead. I love that fast, Paul.
- 45:35Speaker 1: You're crushing it, dude, I see a top ten finishing
- 45:38Speaker 1: your future. Buddy. Thanks again for coming on, and uh
- 45:41Speaker 1: we'll be watching you here shortly. Thanks guys, that's great,
- 45:48Speaker 1: that's cool.
- 45:49Speaker 3: That's awesome, that Spencer.
- 45:52Speaker 1: If you don't like that, you know what I'm gonna
- 45:54Speaker 1: say to you.
- 45:58Speaker 3: Should we turn to our next guest?
- 46:01Speaker 5: Yeah, I was gonna say, let's move listener feed Let's
- 46:03Speaker 5: do a super sized listener feedback at the end of
- 46:05Speaker 5: the show. So we just do back to back interviews
- 46:07Speaker 5: here and then hip throw it back.
- 46:08Speaker 1: And then fine, Yeah, we don't want to we don't
- 46:10Speaker 1: want to keep our next uh our next guest waiting
- 46:14Speaker 1: too long. Uh So now we are joined by Wildlife
- 46:19Speaker 1: Officer extraordinaire, Demi, right from Colorado. Demi, welcome to the show.
- 46:26Speaker 9: Hi guys, thanks for having me. Super excited to be here.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Are you a Were you watching that last interview?
- 46:33Speaker 9: I was, Yeah, those guys are awesome.
- 46:35Speaker 1: Are you going to be watching? Are you know a
- 46:36Speaker 1: fan of the Olympics? Are you gonna be tuning in?
- 46:39Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 46:39Speaker 9: Absolutely, definitely gonna watch the Olympics. I can't I can't
- 46:42Speaker 9: believe how many rounds those guys shoot every year.
- 46:44Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, lucky. I guess if you, if you
- 46:49Speaker 1: have the right sponsor, you get to shoot all that
- 46:51Speaker 1: for free. Probably, Yeah, that's yeah, that's amazing. All right, Demi,
- 46:56Speaker 1: we came across you, I think most of us. I mean,
- 46:59Speaker 1: I'm sure a lot of peop watch and listen and
- 47:01Speaker 1: probably have seen your face or know your name, because
- 47:04Speaker 1: recently you had a big I think a big poaching
- 47:10Speaker 1: bus and it got a lot of press. So tell
- 47:13Speaker 1: us a little bit about that, that specific case and
- 47:16Speaker 1: and sort of I guess what, why did it get
- 47:18Speaker 1: so much praise?
- 47:20Speaker 9: Yeah? So, the recent cage case was a poaching case
- 47:25Speaker 9: with some active duty soldiers on Fort Carson, an Army
- 47:30Speaker 9: military installation here in Colorado Springs in Colorado, I cover
- 47:34Speaker 9: that installation and then they allow hunting and recreational opportunities
- 47:38Speaker 9: on that installation, and it's an incredible resource for civilians
- 47:43Speaker 9: to hunt on and for for members of the military.
- 47:46Speaker 9: But that poaching case involved six illegally taken deer, and
- 47:52Speaker 9: you know, it got it got a lot of attention,
- 47:57Speaker 9: which I wasn't expecting at all. We have a lot
- 48:01Speaker 9: of military in Colorado Springs, and so I think people
- 48:04Speaker 9: always want to know what's going on. And it was
- 48:06Speaker 9: pretty egregious. So I think people were really upset with
- 48:10Speaker 9: how many animals were taken. And you know, it's just, yeah,
- 48:15Speaker 9: I got some more attention than I thought it would.
- 48:18Speaker 1: Okay, Remind everybody, because I think a lot of times
- 48:21Speaker 1: when we hear about a poaching case, you're like, well,
- 48:24Speaker 1: it's just one or maybe even if it's just six deer, right,
- 48:27Speaker 1: or oh, someone had to eat, and it's sometimes it
- 48:30Speaker 1: can be easy to be like, well it's not that
- 48:33Speaker 1: bad until you see like thirty, you know, giant racks
- 48:36Speaker 1: that were poached. But remind everybody why poaching is bad.
- 48:41Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, so hunting and poaching two different things, right,
- 48:45Speaker 9: you know, hunters are doing it legally and ethically responsibly.
- 48:48Speaker 9: They've got a license in their pocket. They're out there,
- 48:51Speaker 9: you know, to fill their freezers or carry on tradition
- 48:54Speaker 9: and heritage, have time with family and friends, you know,
- 48:57Speaker 9: doing all the right things and reaping the rewards of it.
- 49:00Speaker 9: And then poaching is just is a crime. It's just
- 49:02Speaker 9: straight up taking, you know, or pursuing wildlife illegally and
- 49:07Speaker 9: ultimately you know, legal ethical, responsible hunting funds, wildlife conservation.
- 49:12Speaker 9: You know, in Colorado and like many other states, hunting
- 49:16Speaker 9: and fishing licenses, fun wildlife conservation, and habitat management. So
- 49:20Speaker 9: when you're not paying into that pot, you're robbing legitimate
- 49:23Speaker 9: sports persons. And as a legitimate sports person, I'm not
- 49:28Speaker 9: cool with that. And I just happen to have this
- 49:30Speaker 9: patch that enforces those rules.
- 49:31Speaker 1: So okay, we'll get back to the case itself. But
- 49:35Speaker 1: I want to do like a few questions to just
- 49:38Speaker 1: kind of set us up here, What like, why did
- 49:42Speaker 1: you want to become a wildlife officer?
- 49:45Speaker 9: Yeah, question, I've thought about that a lot recently. Yeah,
- 49:51Speaker 9: I mean I grew up outdoors. I was outside since
- 49:54Speaker 9: since I was just a little one, you know, I
- 49:56Speaker 9: have barbie fishing pull in my hand way back back when.
- 50:00Speaker 9: And you know, I grew up around being outside, hiking, camping, voting.
- 50:05Speaker 9: I grew up around a hunting family. Hunting wasn't passed
- 50:09Speaker 9: down to me when I was when I was younger.
- 50:12Speaker 9: It just kind of skipped my generation. But you know,
- 50:14Speaker 9: I grew up butchering and processing, you know, all the
- 50:17Speaker 9: animals that were brought home.
- 50:18Speaker 2: And so I loved it.
- 50:19Speaker 9: And then I realized when I got older, I could
- 50:22Speaker 9: I could get paid for this and I actually have
- 50:24Speaker 9: you know, family members and the agency that I work for,
- 50:27Speaker 9: and so I spent a couple days in the summer
- 50:29Speaker 9: being volunt told to do some things. So I realized, yeah,
- 50:35Speaker 9: I want to do this. And then you know, I
- 50:37Speaker 9: knew I wanted to work for Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
- 50:40Speaker 9: I didn't really know and what you know, what aspect
- 50:43Speaker 9: I did. Then I realized I could be a wildlife
- 50:46Speaker 9: officer and serve a community, and so it all kind
- 50:50Speaker 9: of worked out. I'm also a people person, so I
- 50:53Speaker 9: didn't want to be a biologist because I need people
- 50:56Speaker 9: to talk to. Our biologists do incredible work. But I'm
- 51:00Speaker 9: kind of a yapper, so wildlife officer worked for me.
- 51:04Speaker 1: Okay, uh, what's a what's a normal day look like
- 51:08Speaker 1: for you? When they're when you don't have to like
- 51:10Speaker 1: go and you know, check up on some illegally shot deer.
- 51:14Speaker 1: You're just going. And I know that I'm very aware
- 51:17Speaker 1: of the breadth of what you do, So there might
- 51:19Speaker 1: not be an easy answer, But what's a normal day
- 51:22Speaker 1: for you look like?
- 51:24Speaker 9: Yeah, there is definitely no normal day. Every day is
- 51:28Speaker 9: different and that's that's certainly the feel of the job.
- 51:31Speaker 6: Right.
- 51:32Speaker 9: My truck's my office. So a normal day starts and
- 51:35Speaker 9: starts in my office in my truck. And you know,
- 51:39Speaker 9: maybe it's hunting season and it's that time. You know,
- 51:41Speaker 9: it's fall time, and I'm checking hunters for twelve or
- 51:43Speaker 9: fourteen hours a day, and maybe that's what my whole
- 51:46Speaker 9: day is. Or you know, maybe it's summer when you know,
- 51:49Speaker 9: in Colorado Springs is the urban wildlife interface and so
- 51:55Speaker 9: moving bears around and wrangling deer, and or maybe I'm
- 52:00Speaker 9: teaching hunter ed or I'm in a school doing you know,
- 52:02Speaker 9: a career career topic. I mean, no two days are
- 52:05Speaker 9: the same, which is truly the best part of this
- 52:08Speaker 9: job is I've never lived the same day twice.
- 52:11Speaker 3: So that's awesome.
- 52:13Speaker 1: That is a great reason to have your job. Okay,
- 52:16Speaker 1: so that's a normal day, which sounds awesome. Tell me
- 52:20Speaker 1: about how how many years have you been doing this job?
- 52:24Speaker 9: Yeah, I'm I would classify myself as a as a
- 52:27Speaker 9: baby officer. So I've been an officer now for three years.
- 52:31Speaker 9: I started with agency as an intern and then I
- 52:33Speaker 9: did some seasonal positions which was the most fun jobs ever,
- 52:38Speaker 9: all the fun stuff and now the responsibility. And so yeah,
- 52:42Speaker 9: officer for three years now.
- 52:44Speaker 1: In those three years, what's the most exciting day that
- 52:48Speaker 1: you've experienced on the job. What happened?
- 52:51Speaker 9: We have some exciting days. I'm not gonna lie. I
- 52:54Speaker 9: handle bears all the time. I've got a lot of
- 52:57Speaker 9: bears in my in my district that I cover, so
- 53:00Speaker 9: I usually have my hands on a bear two Those
- 53:04Speaker 9: days are exciting, especially when they're being honery and you know,
- 53:08Speaker 9: you can't predict what wild life is going to do,
- 53:11Speaker 9: especially when you're trying to pick up a bear. You know,
- 53:15Speaker 9: we we do some really cool stuff. You know, we
- 53:17Speaker 9: have big horned sheep traps that we do and that's
- 53:20Speaker 9: for some relocating to create different sheep herds, and that
- 53:24Speaker 9: is literally just going out and wrestling cheap. So there's
- 53:28Speaker 9: a lot of exciting days.
- 53:31Speaker 1: Okay, okay, fellas, any questions right now before I move
- 53:35Speaker 1: on here.
- 53:36Speaker 3: No, I'm just like the hands on stuff always just
- 53:40Speaker 3: grabs my imagination.
- 53:42Speaker 9: Yeah, the hands down stuff is why you do.
- 53:45Speaker 1: The job, right, Yeah, totally.
- 53:47Speaker 9: I want to touch a bear, all right.
- 53:51Speaker 1: So the article that I read, the many that I read,
- 53:54Speaker 1: said there was a moment identified where you identify or
- 54:00Speaker 1: associated vehicle with this crime that happened on Fort Carson,
- 54:05Speaker 1: But it didn't really say exactly how you did that.
- 54:08Speaker 1: Can you explain like how you all of a sudden
- 54:10Speaker 1: like figured out what vehicle was associated with the crime
- 54:13Speaker 1: and then tell me was that a sort of crux
- 54:16Speaker 1: of the investigation?
- 54:19Speaker 9: Yeah? So I was. You know, this this tip came
- 54:23Speaker 9: in from from a legitimate hunter who who'd found a
- 54:26Speaker 9: buck that had the antlers sawed off and and very
- 54:29Speaker 9: minimal meat taken, and and he called the Fort Carson
- 54:33Speaker 9: conservation officers, who are absolutely incredible to work with, and
- 54:36Speaker 9: so you know, they kind of called me in and said,
- 54:39Speaker 9: you know, we I think we have a poacher. So
- 54:42Speaker 9: went out there you know, looked at the buck. Obviously
- 54:46Speaker 9: this is not a legitimate harvest, and you know, quarters
- 54:49Speaker 9: aren't taken, tunderlines aren't taken, backstraps, I mean, just one
- 54:52Speaker 9: one small roast and the antler's cut off, and so
- 54:57Speaker 9: looking around for a spent cartridge, which is pretty impossible
- 55:00Speaker 9: on an active military installation, by the way, there's a
- 55:05Speaker 9: lot of sped cartridges. And you know, find find another
- 55:09Speaker 9: dough with the exact same same grunt roast taken and
- 55:12Speaker 9: that's it. But near those two carcasses, found some boot tracks.
- 55:18Speaker 9: Followed those boot tracks off of the installation.
- 55:22Speaker 1: Sorry to interject, but dirt tracking or snow tracking a.
- 55:26Speaker 9: Little bit of bolt. There wasn't a lot of snow
- 55:28Speaker 9: on the ground. There was snow in some parts, but
- 55:30Speaker 9: it was yeah, it was mostly dirt. So yeah, followed
- 55:35Speaker 9: the boot tracks off the installation, found some tire tracks.
- 55:38Speaker 9: It happened to be near a wild land firefighter housing.
- 55:43Speaker 9: So you know, we just me and the conservation officers
- 55:46Speaker 9: for Fort Carson popped in there and firefighters saw vehicle
- 55:49Speaker 9: there within the last couple of days. And I knew
- 55:53Speaker 9: that those carcasses were one maybe two days old, so
- 55:58Speaker 9: they're like, yeah, this this vehicle was he it was weird.
- 56:00Speaker 9: We took a picture of it, so that kind of
- 56:03Speaker 9: linked up my guy and found the registered owner of
- 56:05Speaker 9: that vehicle because they took the picture, ran them through
- 56:09Speaker 9: our systems. Never had a license, which of course led
- 56:12Speaker 9: me to his social media, myself and the conservation officers
- 56:16Speaker 9: to his social media where he certainly had some animals
- 56:20Speaker 9: on there, but no license.
- 56:22Speaker 1: Well, yeah, that brings up the question because we've talked
- 56:26Speaker 1: to enough wildlife officers over the years and more and
- 56:31Speaker 1: more it seems like what's bringing these fools down is
- 56:36Speaker 1: social media and like and we've heard like it's a
- 56:39Speaker 1: big part of your job, right where you can actually
- 56:42Speaker 1: like get a lot of work done just by perusing
- 56:44Speaker 1: social media.
- 56:46Speaker 9: Yeah, no, absolutely, I mean everybody takes pictures of what
- 56:51Speaker 9: they do, you know, and especially if you think it's
- 56:53Speaker 9: something cool, and everybody's got a cell phone in their pocket,
- 56:57Speaker 9: and so yeah, in this case, for the case twenty something,
- 57:02Speaker 9: people definitely take pictures of the things that they shoot at,
- 57:05Speaker 9: and so we use that to our advantage. I mean
- 57:08Speaker 9: we're gonna use every I'm going to use every tool
- 57:10Speaker 9: I have. So if I've got to get a warrant
- 57:12Speaker 9: for your social media. That's fine, I can do that.
- 57:16Speaker 1: Unreal, unreal? What else was I gonna ask you? Oh,
- 57:23Speaker 1: as a part of the punishment, I read that they're
- 57:28Speaker 1: given some pretty hefty fines and then they're still sort
- 57:31Speaker 1: of waiting to see what kind of revocations is that
- 57:36Speaker 1: the right word, will happen of their hunting and fishing licenses,
- 57:40Speaker 1: and it might be country wide because of the interstate
- 57:45Speaker 1: compact that we have in place now. So that's awesome.
- 57:51Speaker 1: When I saw the numbers, I was like, oh good,
- 57:52Speaker 1: they're gonna get hit pretty hard. But you're also taking
- 57:55Speaker 1: their rifle. The rifle, though, is being destroyed, and often
- 58:00Speaker 1: times that can like it gets a little like people
- 58:03Speaker 1: get upset when guns are are destroyed. So why because
- 58:08Speaker 1: I've heard that oftentimes heads and hides can be auctioned off,
- 58:12Speaker 1: that are heads and hides that come from poaching cases,
- 58:14Speaker 1: and then that money can get put back into wildlife.
- 58:17Speaker 1: So why destroy this weapon versus possibly auctioning it off
- 58:21Speaker 1: and using that money for wildlife.
- 58:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:25Speaker 9: No, that's a great question, and everybody asks it, and
- 58:28Speaker 9: the answer is, you know, it's it's state law. So
- 58:30Speaker 9: it's Colorado state statute that this this firearm has been
- 58:34Speaker 9: deemed the public nuisance, and so that happens judicially. That's
- 58:38Speaker 9: not something that Colorado Parks and Wildlife makes the call on.
- 58:41Speaker 9: And so you know, we follow the law and we
- 58:44Speaker 9: listen to what the core system tells us. So it
- 58:47Speaker 9: does get destroyed. We do have some hides that go
- 58:50Speaker 9: to auction, and those are like roadkill mortality hides that
- 58:54Speaker 9: will go to auction and that money comes back into
- 58:57Speaker 9: the general pot. But with the firearm, yeah, it's it's
- 59:00Speaker 9: the court's decision. But I heard everybody loud and clear.
- 59:04Speaker 2: On that one.
- 59:06Speaker 3: Well, I don't want to be a snob, and I
- 59:07Speaker 3: didn't get a good look at that thing, But I
- 59:09Speaker 3: don't think it's going to bring in a ton of
- 59:11Speaker 3: conservation funding.
- 59:12Speaker 1: It's not anything Radel. You're not gonna bid on that one.
- 59:19Speaker 3: No, No, I don't think that's even worth the gun broker,
- 59:23Speaker 3: you know, bumping it up with the listings, like paying
- 59:25Speaker 3: for extra photos and stuff like that.
- 59:27Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, Debbie. For folks that you know hear this,
- 59:32Speaker 1: or they've been thinking about it, Young folks out there
- 59:35Speaker 1: thinking about what they're going to do with their lives,
- 59:38Speaker 1: thinking they could possibly do the job that you do.
- 59:40Speaker 1: It sounds pretty awesome. Give us some advice and maybe
- 59:45Speaker 1: some sort of the baseline education that you need to
- 59:50Speaker 1: get involved in doing what you do.
- 59:53Speaker 9: Yeah, so in the state of Colorado, you do have
- 59:56Speaker 9: to have a four year degree in a natural resource
- 59:59Speaker 9: field and then you go through a whole onboarding process.
- 1:00:05Speaker 9: You know that that you would for kind of any
- 1:00:08Speaker 9: peace officer position, So your background checks, polygraph psyche out,
- 1:00:14Speaker 9: all the fun stuff. And then when you get the job,
- 1:00:16Speaker 9: you go to police Academy for six months, and then
- 1:00:19Speaker 9: after that you go to Colorado Parks and Wildlife's Academy.
- 1:00:23Speaker 9: They teach you all kinds of fun things and snowmobile training,
- 1:00:27Speaker 9: horseback riding training, wildlife forensics. It's all the cool stuff
- 1:00:32Speaker 9: that you got into the job for. So that's kind
- 1:00:35Speaker 9: of the education and then what you can expect if
- 1:00:38Speaker 9: you're hired. But you know, if you're if you're looking
- 1:00:42Speaker 9: at this job, just get involved with whatever you know,
- 1:00:45Speaker 9: state agency that you can volunteer, spend your time with people,
- 1:00:49Speaker 9: show them that you can work hard, go on ride
- 1:00:52Speaker 9: alongs with the officers. You know, if you want to
- 1:00:54Speaker 9: be an officer, I'd say you really, you know, really
- 1:00:57Speaker 9: understand the job before before you get into it. It
- 1:01:00Speaker 9: can be a really huge commitment. It's one of the
- 1:01:02Speaker 9: most rewarding jobs in the world. I can't I can't
- 1:01:05Speaker 9: picture I mean anything else, but just really understand what
- 1:01:09Speaker 9: you're signing up for and get involved as much as
- 1:01:12Speaker 9: you can and just stick with it. Listen more than
- 1:01:15Speaker 9: you speak, and yeah, just just stick with it. It's tough,
- 1:01:19Speaker 9: but once you get in, you're in.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: So mm I like that you said that. I like
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: always like the quote about you have two ears and
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: one mouth, you should use them.
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: And that's good advice for any anyone interested in any
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: career field.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: I think, yeah, yeah, it is Seth and Randall.
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: I don't have any questions. I just you know, I
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: always appreciate folks out there putting themselves in uncomfortable situations
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: to protect our shared resources. And there's just like everything
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: that we love depends on people committing themselves to protecting that.
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: So hats off and promising start a young career, but
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: a promising start, you know, let us know when you
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: have your next big bust, we'll get you back on here.
- 1:02:07Speaker 9: Thanks guys, Yeah, thanks, thanks so much for the kind words,
- 1:02:10Speaker 9: really really happy to be here, and yeah, sure a
- 1:02:13Speaker 9: little bit of what's going on in this world.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: Thank you, Demy. Good luck in the future, Thank you,
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: Thanks Demy.
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: Sea to Stellar guests today, Yannie, you good.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: I can't take I think I can take credit for
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: DEMI because I did send the article to UH to Jake,
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: our producer, and asked him to line that up. And
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: then I don't know exactly who lined up Paul and Matt,
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: but yeah, I've enjoyed that. It's a time for some
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: listener feedback.
- 1:02:44Speaker 5: Phil, Yeah, well what we're probably only going to do
- 1:02:47Speaker 5: one listener feedback. Do you want to do throwback? And
- 1:02:52Speaker 5: then we can just hit keep going.
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: We can keep this thing going, Phil.
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: We'll say that for March.
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: Who wants to go first? Our throwbacks first? Oh, this
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: is very important. I'm gonna milk all these.
- 1:03:05Speaker 5: I'm gonna milk for the next month.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: In nineteen seventy I can't believe it. Did I mentioned
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: Stephen Ronie As I don't think I had heard that one. Yeah,
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: oh great, fantastic's that's one of my favorits.
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: Oh, Corey Colkin's just texted me. He must be listening
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: and he said, Uh, I lined up, Paul, Come on bro,
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: Sorry Corey, Sorry Corey.
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: Shout out to the whole team here.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a group of groups, not just us group.
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: I didn't have shit for this one group effort. All right,
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: who's going first, doctor.
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: I'll go first. I don't think Yanni realized when he
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: sent out this, uh, this query for photos from twenty
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: years ago. I don't think he realized it. Seth and
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: I were both still in high school.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: No, I realized that. Yeah. I was half hoping that
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: we could even have a fourth person in here that
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: was even younger, and all of a sudden we'd have
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: a well there is you're in diapers fill in the corner.
- 1:04:14Speaker 5: Yeah, you're not gonna get me in diapers twenty years ago.
- 1:04:16Speaker 5: But I do. I do have a picture.
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I wanted to share good I wanted to share
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: my my high school football photo.
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: But is that it?
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: No, that's not it.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: I say, I've seen that photo. It's a good one.
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: Maybe bringing out for the grand finale of Yeah, and
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: I realized I was twenty.
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: That was twenty twenty four, so you know it's not
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: quite But this is twenty years ago. This is me
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: living my Best Life summer of twenty twenty six. Actually,
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: I was probably home from the first twenty Oh I'm
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: sorry two thousand and six. Okay, I think I was
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: probably actually home for my first year college working for
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: a company called pro Clean Restoration Incorporated. Uh. We had
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: an office on Columbia Parkway there in Cincinnati. I sound
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: like rain Man when I do that. Columbia Parkway, Cincinnati, Ohio,
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: eight to eight Oak.
- 1:05:11Speaker 5: Street or whatever.
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: But yeah, so I bring up where I'm working because
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: as you can see on this T shirt, it's covered
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: in paint and deck stain. And also that hat is
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: a bass pro Shops hat that was I used as
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: a wiping rag, and so it actually weighed perhaps two
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: and a quarter pounds with all of the cedar tone
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: deck stain as we called it sa dub that I'd
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: absorbed into this hat fully weather proof or for a
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: real long time fishing with nightcrawlers in the Little Miami River.
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: That is a Bass Pro Shops bait casting combo. I
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: think it's probably got some pretty heavy mono on there,
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: judging by the reflection of the light, and just a
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: real simple nightcrawler on the bottom. Looks like I got
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: an egg sinker there and a really crappy landing net
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: that the foam had ripped off the handle. But you know,
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: it's always fun to net fish instead of just dragging
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: them up on the bank.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: Let me guess, like a seven pound channel cat. Is
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: that what I'm looking at? Yeah?
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: I think that's a good estimation.
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: Did I get the species right?
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: Yes? But what I like about that one, well, what
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: I like about that one in particular is that the
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: tail is hanging out of the net, which I think
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: always adds to always adds exactly.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: Yeah, it looks like it's going to slap you in
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: the face.
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: You get a king salmon in the net and you
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: got the big tail flopping over the side. That's a
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: good fish, no matter how big the net is.
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: Oh, I need to go catch one of those one
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: day by fall nets. Let's go right now, All right, seth,
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: Let's go back twenty years ago? Has almost twenty almost twenty,
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: we'll say it's eighteen does two thousand and eight?
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: Oh oh yeah, that guy doing some fur trapping had
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: a to be a good day of raccoon trapping. I
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: used to back when I was in high school. I
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: used to run a line every every season basically, and
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: I would get up and check the line before school
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: and then go into school.
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: But yeah, this was just a day of coon trapping.
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: Got the one on the left there is, uh, I'll
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: point out as quite a large one.
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: And back in those days, raccoons were going.
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: For a decent price. Remember I got like fifty eight
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: bucks for raccoon back then one time, and that was
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: flashed and stretched. Yeah, yeah, sold it through the North
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: American Fur Auction NAFA, which is no longer a thing.
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: What I like about this picture is that it could
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: be from twenty years ago, or it could be from
- 1:07:45Speaker 3: forty years ago. It's it's a timeless image.
- 1:07:48Speaker 5: It's two thousand and one, Dodge fifteen.
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: What's the sticker on the left? Is that a Monster
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: Energy drink sticker?
- 1:07:54Speaker 9: No?
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: No, that's a Hunter Specialty sticker?
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: Oh good?
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: And on the on the right there's Thompson Center and
- 1:08:00Speaker 4: the Hunter Safety System there. God, And if I'm repeating it,
- 1:08:03Speaker 4: if I'm doing what you did, I'll go with I'm
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: wearing a scent lock hat and the Antler King T shirt.
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: Back when I was playing a lot of food plots
- 1:08:11Speaker 4: and stuff.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: And how old were you? Uh, fourteen. Was your was
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: your gosh, youngster?
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: Could you?
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: Could you zoom in on his face?
- 1:08:24Speaker 5: I must can't quickly sometimes.
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: Don't worry about it. Film. That's terrible, Seth, was your
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: was your father an American flag and your mother a
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: issue of fur Fishing Game magazine? Because you look like
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: if you hasked AI to make to make the American
- 1:08:43Speaker 3: the young American Trapper, this would be it.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: It was a Trapper and Predator color magazine.
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: God, that's good exactly, this is good. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: The first thing that caught my eye is that, uh,
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: Seth has been rocking the same eyebrows his entire life
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: pretty much.
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: Yeah, that runs in the family. They've actually just been
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: getting I noticed these days. They just get wilder with
- 1:09:07Speaker 4: every year that passes. I'm getting like the Bryan Callahan. Yeah,
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: eyebrows lately.
- 1:09:14Speaker 3: I started on trimming mine. Every now and then, I'll
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: get a white one. I'll get a long one that curls.
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I'll get a long one that comes down
- 1:09:20Speaker 4: and is I can see it in my vision.
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: Yeah. Next thing they'll poke in the eye. That happens
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: to me every now and then if I don't stay
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: on top of it, all right, Phil, let's see your
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: photo from years ago? Sure?
- 1:09:32Speaker 5: Yeah, well so I I already showed. We did a
- 1:09:34Speaker 5: throwback Thursday where Spencer asked people to bring in fishing
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: photos and I actually had one from almost exactly twenty
- 1:09:40Speaker 5: years ago that they already showed.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: But you didn't do that one. No, I didn't.
- 1:09:43Speaker 5: I'm not doing that one again. So I decided to
- 1:09:45Speaker 5: use a picture pictures from my natural habitat in high school,
- 1:09:48Speaker 5: which was which was the band room I let in
- 1:09:52Speaker 5: high school. There's me in the middle there. That's what
- 1:09:56Speaker 5: my hair was for most of high school. It was
- 1:09:58Speaker 5: very cool. I love you should bring that pretty much
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: any extracurricular band activity I could do. It was. It
- 1:10:07Speaker 5: was my thing. I was very cool.
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: You could say, did you have a MySpace page?
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: Yeah, of course I did? You know I I You know,
- 1:10:14Speaker 5: I spent way too much time choosing the music that
- 1:10:17Speaker 5: would play. You know. Actually I had a zanga before
- 1:10:20Speaker 5: my Space.
- 1:10:20Speaker 3: Did you ever tell your parents? You'll never understand.
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: I wasn't that bad.
- 1:10:28Speaker 5: Probably I probably had had the thought a few.
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: The hair is pretty intimidated.
- 1:10:31Speaker 5: The hair is the hair is very good. I might
- 1:10:32Speaker 5: bring it back. What do you guys think I would
- 1:10:35Speaker 5: just to go for it. That's good.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: What would your gal say? I?
- 1:10:40Speaker 5: Well, my my hair was about that long when I
- 1:10:43Speaker 5: met my wife and it worked back then.
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: Fill out, boys, that's a good And is.
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: That a trombone? That is a trombone?
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: Uh?
- 1:10:52Speaker 5: It's it's a large board trombone with a little valve
- 1:10:54Speaker 5: to that helps you play the lower notes a little
- 1:10:57Speaker 5: bit more more easily.
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: Were you wearing on hided skater shoes in this photto?
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: Probably? Yes?
- 1:11:03Speaker 5: Actually a yeah, no, it would It would have been
- 1:11:09Speaker 5: like Vans or something.
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: You're probably too young for Jenko jeans.
- 1:11:13Speaker 5: To I never owned a pair of Janco's, but my
- 1:11:16Speaker 5: cooler cousins had had Jenco nice.
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: All right, there's that I was able to skip those,
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: all right, Last, but not least. It's good, Phil, Thank you.
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: This photto I believe is circa two thousand. This is
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: the first bull Elk that I killed and recovered. Unfortunately,
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: the year before when I was this is my first
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: year that I was guiding, and I was able to
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: take off the first rifle season in Colorado hunt with
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: my dad and a couple other of our friends. And unfortunately,
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: the year before the outfitter taken me out on the
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: last day of our DIY hunt. He realized that we
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: hadn't seen an elk let alone killed one, and I
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: shot one range and probably shot him in the guts.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: We looked for a day and a half, couldn't find him.
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: It was found, maybe I don't know, a week later
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: by another guy bear on top of the carcass. So
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: Lesson learned there, when the elk is at fifty yards,
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: you don't have your scope cranked up to nine. Hard
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: to know where the bullet's gonna hit. Right, But great morning,
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: this is opening morning, and I, uh, I wanted to
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: hunt the top of this particular I call it a mountain.
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: It's it's uh mountain makes it sound a little too big.
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: It's uh, it's a nice it's it's got it's a
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: big ridge, you know, that has an apex to it,
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: and the elk like to go out there, and a
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: lot of the other folks hunting that area. It's too
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: big of a climb form, so it's kind of left
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: left to those that wanted to make the walk up there.
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: And I'd hunted basically my way all the way up
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: to the ridge to the very tippy top and hadn't
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: seen nothing, and it was pound in snow, just a
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: full blizzard a lot of times, you know, visibility less
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: than one hundred yards, and I'm kind of once I
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: turned around on the top, I kind of gave up
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: and said, ah, you know, I'm just gonna have my
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: rifle like slung on my shoulder. And I'm more kind
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: of mosey and ding dong and back down the same
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: ridge head and heading back towards camp than hunting. And
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: I think because of the snow storm limited visibility, I
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: stop at one point and I look and there's a
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: bull standing there close fifty sixty yards, you know, and
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: he's looking at me but just couldn't figure make me
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: out or whatever, and it had enough time to take
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: my Model seven hundred BdL oh rand uh huh, which
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: I did a little searching on this this morning, and
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: I'd forgotten what ADL BdL CDL stands for. Can you
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: answer that question?
- 1:13:52Speaker 3: Well, the ADL is is the blind mag right, yes,
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: And then the BdL is a floorplate.
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: Uh huh.
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: This CDL box meg.
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: I think the CDL is still hinged forlor plate. But
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: there's just some other fancy you know, more satin on
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: the walnut and it's just a little bit fancier. But
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: what I found really funny is that the DL stands
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: for Deluxe. Oh yeah, the A stands for average and yeah,
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: so you go from average deluxe to better Deluxe to
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: classic deluxe. So no matter what, what's seven hundred you by,
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: you're getting a deluxe rifle, but just average, better or classic.
- 1:14:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: My dad gave me that rifle when I was I
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: don't know, fifteen, sixteen years old, and it was one
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: of those deals. I wasn't expecting a rifle. I hadn't
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: asked for a rifle, but he just comes up to me.
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: We're actually out a Latvian like social function, and he
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: just whispers in my ear, I just got your rifle.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: Well I was like, oh, that's boys. That's never happened
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: to me in my life where someone just like.
- 1:14:59Speaker 3: Am I man now Dad?
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: Yeah? Well he like it's one of those things like
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: you're not expecting a present like that, but like it
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: was secret, right, and it was kind of like, yeah,
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: don't tell anybody because it costs money. We need to
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: just like we'll just work it into the He was
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: long divorced from my mother at that time. But anyways, Yeah,
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: so I shot the bull Remington corlocked. Mm hmm. You
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: can see where this story is gonna go. I shoot
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: him once later to find out in the heart he jumps,
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: I shoot him again. Another part of this story is
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: when he jumps, he jumps a couple of yards whatever.
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: He's standing in a new spot. I look back to
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: where he was just standing. Now this is a night
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: This is if you're not looking at the photo, this
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: is like a very small, probably two year old four
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: point bull. Where he was standing is probably a three
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: year old five point And I'm like, d look at that,
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: you know. So I've got two shots in him, and
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: he's sort of like in that moment, starts taking off
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: and I just take off after him, and I get
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: another shot in him. I don't know where that that
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: one hits. He keeps going. I run, I don't know,
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: close to another one hundred yards and kind of end
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: up in the timber and his downfall and he kind
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: of gets caught up. I'm sure he's gonna die at
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: that point, but he's not dead yet. So I put
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: a fourth shot into him. He ends up having three
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: in the heart and one in the lungs. Whoa, and
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: uh again, maybe would have died from the first one.
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: But it's just like I had already been around long
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: enough to know that, Like with those elk, you just
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: keep shooting until they're not until they're tongues hanging out.
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: If you want to go through the attire, I want
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: to say that was a Eldor ski resort, like just
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: like a wool beanie I was wearing. I was wearing
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: probably a Patagonia flee with a probably Patagonia kapeline underneath it.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: Cabella's shamois or shammy. Remember that it was like a
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: soft brush cotton. Yeah. We love those pants because they
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: were so quiet and for whatever reason, I thought that
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: suspenders were also a hip at the time. But uh yeah,
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: my first bull elk love it. Two thousand, that's cool.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: What was the rifle chamberda in thirty? At six? I
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: forgot I mis mentioning that. Yeah, at six, probably was
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: shooting one eighty core locks.
- 1:17:16Speaker 3: I guess killed a lot of animals with one eighty
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: cor locks.
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: Yep. Yeah, all right, now the long awaited We're only
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: seventeen minutes behind, but let's do some listener feedback.
- 1:17:28Speaker 5: Sure, A couple of shoutouts here. First is from Bryson.
- 1:17:32Speaker 5: I'd love to get a shout out to my son
- 1:17:33Speaker 5: who turns two today and was the only three month
- 1:17:36Speaker 5: old when he attended the Boise Meat Eater Live show
- 1:17:38Speaker 5: two years ago, which made him the youngest attendee. Happy Birthday,
- 1:17:43Speaker 5: Happy birth Birthday. And we also had another shout out
- 1:17:47Speaker 5: here too that I will find at some point. But
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: there's a first.
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: McCullough was going on a Havelena hunt.
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: Oh yes, did you see that one somewhere?
- 1:17:59Speaker 3: Uh live?
- 1:18:01Speaker 5: Okay, I'll find it later. Uh cranky surf. When is
- 1:18:04Speaker 5: Randall's haircut? Will there be a raffle to determine how
- 1:18:07Speaker 5: much is cut off?
- 1:18:10Speaker 3: Still don't know when my haircut is. We have a
- 1:18:13Speaker 3: listener who's a barber who's offered to cut my hair
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: on the radio media to Radio Live Finale, Grand Finale Spectacular,
- 1:18:25Speaker 3: but he lives in Maine, so I haven't yet been
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: able to determine whether that will happen. As far as
- 1:18:31Speaker 3: how much is getting cut off, pretty much just the
- 1:18:34Speaker 3: stuff that's getting in my ears. I need to keep
- 1:18:38Speaker 3: it long in the back because it's sweet and I
- 1:18:41Speaker 3: need to keep it long. On top to hide the
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: bald spot that has grown and grown in recent years.
- 1:18:46Speaker 3: So I'm just hanging on by a thread to my youth.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: So the haircut would the haircut.
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: If I cut it all off, it will be surrendering
- 1:18:54Speaker 3: to father time.
- 1:18:55Speaker 5: So mo Gore asks, Yanni, how are the little or
- 1:19:02Speaker 5: big kiddies doing in your area?
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: And Mingus and I have not been bothering them, if that?
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: If that, hopefully that answers your question. As far as
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: I know, the population is doing great. But yeah, we've
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: just had like sort of a streak of bad luck.
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: We've had tracks, a lot of tracks have gone on
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: to private which we haven't been able to follow. We've
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: had tracks that have just filled in with snow. We've
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: had tracks that have we've lost on bear hillsides, which
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: are common around these parts. Right now, we have caught
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: a bobcat this year, which was quite the accomplishment for Mingus.
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: He caught his first bobcat. But the big ones, I've
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: not seen one in a tree yet. This year I
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: will be going out, I believe Friday or Saturday and
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: keep after it great.
- 1:19:52Speaker 5: Will there be more Meat Eater Kids episodes coming soon?
- 1:19:54Speaker 5: This is from Chad, Chad, we are they're not going
- 1:19:57Speaker 5: to be in the same format that we did the
- 1:20:00Speaker 5: first three seasons, and so we're currently cooking up some
- 1:20:03Speaker 5: new kids content. How's that for alliteration? And but it's
- 1:20:07Speaker 5: probably still a few few months down the road. But
- 1:20:10Speaker 5: keep your eyes peeled and keep him on that on
- 1:20:12Speaker 5: that podcast feed. There's a question for Seth. Seth, how
- 1:20:16Speaker 5: much experience do you have with with drones for photography?
- 1:20:19Speaker 5: Do you have any?
- 1:20:20Speaker 4: Non?
- 1:20:21Speaker 5: Okay, then I will not ask you. This guy who
- 1:20:23Speaker 5: was looking for.
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: Above you.
- 1:20:26Speaker 5: Oh yeah, Oh it's from Leland, Leland, Arizona Youth Havelena
- 1:20:29Speaker 5: opens for my daughter. Could I get a good luck
- 1:20:31Speaker 5: to McCollough on her first have Alena hunt?
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: Good luck McCullough.
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: Good luck McCullough.
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: That's right. Just remember what we learned earlier. It was
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: what was it breathing position, trigger, pull and follow through
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: four things.
- 1:20:46Speaker 3: Knowing Leland, I'm sure she's already got plenty of practice.
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I imagine.
- 1:20:50Speaker 5: So here's here's a Seth one pa and fishing related.
- 1:20:54Speaker 5: It's just Steven. He's looking for some some basic gear,
- 1:20:57Speaker 5: some beginner gear to get into ice fishing. If you
- 1:20:59Speaker 5: had sort of like a quick kit.
- 1:21:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I would start with an auger, doesn't have to
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: be anything fancy. You get one of those hand augers.
- 1:21:09Speaker 4: They work pretty good as long as the blades are sharp.
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: Basic ice pole, which is just a short fishing pole
- 1:21:17Speaker 4: with a you can honestly just use. If you have
- 1:21:19Speaker 4: a spin reel, you don't have to buy a new reel.
- 1:21:23Speaker 4: You can just throw that on an ice pole.
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: And then from.
- 1:21:27Speaker 5: There as far as safety wise, Pennsylvania doesn't.
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: Always have great ice.
- 1:21:32Speaker 4: They do this year, but I would get a spud
- 1:21:34Speaker 4: bar and those those ice picks that you put around
- 1:21:38Speaker 4: your neck, so if you you kind.
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: Of wear them around your neck like a necklace.
- 1:21:43Speaker 4: If you go through the ice, you can grab those
- 1:21:45Speaker 4: things and use them to pull yourself back up on
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: the ice. That's good to have, especially for beginners that
- 1:21:51Speaker 4: don't have a lot of experience on ice. And then
- 1:21:56Speaker 4: from I mean that's basically it to stock art. You
- 1:22:01Speaker 4: can go super deep on it with electronics and you know,
- 1:22:05Speaker 4: having a sled to haul your stuff out there is nice,
- 1:22:08Speaker 4: but say fella can't do the electronics part. That's kind
- 1:22:11Speaker 4: of where I'm at.
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: I feel like I have all the other gear but
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: I feel like without electronics, like, how am I ever
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: going to find the fish? So how do you find
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: the fish with no electronics?
- 1:22:23Speaker 4: Well, back when, back when I used to fish with
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: without electronics, we were just just trying to find like
- 1:22:33Speaker 4: points that go out into the lake or whatever you're
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: on to like read a map. Yeah, Basically, if you
- 1:22:39Speaker 4: have access to a map, that's helpful because you can
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: just you know, look at the map. But if you
- 1:22:47Speaker 4: don't have access to like underwater map or whatever, I
- 1:22:51Speaker 4: just try to find like points that are coming out
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: into the water, or you know, if if you're if
- 1:22:59Speaker 4: you can see the bank and there's like it's like
- 1:23:01Speaker 4: a sandy bank that transitions to a different type of
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: like rip rap or something like finding transitions like that
- 1:23:09Speaker 4: or you know, it's it's totally doable.
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: I used to do it all the time. Is it
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: bad form? Because I was gonna say, well, you'd pull
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: up and see where all the other shanties are people
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: are fishing, yeah, and then go near there or start
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: asking them questions like is that bad form? Just to
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: roll in and be like, hey man, let me take
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: a look at your Yeah, I'm new to this, Like
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: would it be Okay, to drill a whole ten yards
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: away from here? Is that a good spot? I think
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: most people would be open to that totally. Yeah, And
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: if you're gonna go that close, I would definitely talk
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: to someone. But you can definitely find the general area
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: where people.
- 1:23:41Speaker 4: You know or fishing, or if you go like early
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: in the morning, wherever you can find last or yesterday's
- 1:23:46Speaker 4: holes basically and try those spots too. So yeah, good luck.
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: What else do you got, Phil?
- 1:23:56Speaker 5: Ye're honest, this is from Judah. Do you have any
- 1:23:59Speaker 5: tips on trying to stay injury free or for trying
- 1:24:02Speaker 5: to stay injury free over years of running?
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: Hmm, Yeah, I've been lucky. I think I've I have
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: been able to stay injury free. I mean, I've had
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: a bad ankle sprain once. I'm dealing with a little
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: bit of like a carlage issue, and it's just I
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: think that's no matter if you're running or just living,
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: you're gonna have those issues in your knees. But I
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: don't know, I think doing it that was I recently
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: had to go through this knee kind of a process
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: of figuring out what was going on in there. My
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: last appointment was with an orthopedic surgeon. And she said,
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: the worst thing you can do is stop doing what
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: you're doing. I said, you even mean like runne hundred miles?
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: She goes, yes, do it. It is good for you.
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: Do not stop. It's gonna get worse if you stop.
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: So don't stop running. Bow hunting at full draw.
- 1:24:53Speaker 5: Asks of who all of you guys are going to
- 1:24:55Speaker 5: be at NWTFO.
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: Oh yeah, well guess you two are not. Nope, I
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: am full draw.
- 1:25:04Speaker 3: I wish I'll be at the Hunt Expo that weekend.
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: Yeah. And if you're gonna be at NWTF, a good
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: place to run into us is going to be the
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: Grand Slam after party. The Meat Eater is hosting, uh
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: you know, it's a big fundraiser. They're gonna have a
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: bunch of cool hunts and uh guns, shotguns, rifles to
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: auction off, and we're gonna tell some turkey stories. We're
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: going to try to get all of you to buy
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: as many raffle tickets for these items as possible. We're
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: going to have an owl hooting contest. The clay is
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: going to mc so if you're a good owl hooter
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: and in your NWTF. Now this is voice voice only
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: and then we're also going to play some trivia. So yeah,
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: it's the Grand Slam after party. Uh be a great
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: place to bump into us. Or on Saturday, most of
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: us will be at the booth, the First Light Booth
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: all day and you can see us there.
- 1:26:04Speaker 3: And if you want to find me at the Hunt Expo,
- 1:26:06Speaker 3: I'll be slumming in the beer line with everybody else.
- 1:26:10Speaker 4: I'll make mention that the Great American Outdoor Show in Harrisburg,
- 1:26:14Speaker 4: Pennsylvania's kicking off and the Family Boot Shop will have
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: a booth there Center Boot Company.
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: Look them up.
- 1:26:19Speaker 5: They'll have some first Light gear there and I think
- 1:26:22Speaker 5: some meteor stuff too.
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: Brent Reeves is at the at that show, I believe.
- 1:26:26Speaker 3: Oh really, I think he's doing some with case.
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: Oh.
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: We'll look him up to He's a nice guy. Go
- 1:26:31Speaker 3: talk to.
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: Him, extremely nice.
- 1:26:33Speaker 3: Have him tell you a bedtime story.
- 1:26:35Speaker 5: Ian asks, do you guys have more episodes of Roasts
- 1:26:37Speaker 5: on the Way?
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: Yes, Ian, we do have more episodes of Roast on
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: the Way There they were. They were hounding me yesterday
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: to put my notes in on an episode which I
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: believe they want to release here in the next week
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: or so. So don't fret and then behind that one,
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: there are many more coming. We've been hard at it.
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: We have been cooking, roasting our tails off here recently.
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: So Phil and I judged an episode together.
- 1:27:06Speaker 5: We did I think we did.
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: Pretty ch I haven't seen on the cut of that
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: one yet, but I'm expecting great things.
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: I think it's going to take a lot of word
- 1:27:12Speaker 3: to cut that one.
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:27:15Speaker 5: I think I gave the editor specific instructions on camera
- 1:27:18Speaker 5: things to do, So whoever's cutting that, I apologize.
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: Let's see what will.
- 1:27:23Speaker 5: You guys be doing on Thursdays at eleven am after
- 1:27:26Speaker 5: March fifth.
- 1:27:27Speaker 4: That's from moor uh answering emails.
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: Yeah that. If I'm in the office, it'll be something, Yeah,
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: Moor working on a book, editing, video, editing, photoph But.
- 1:27:41Speaker 3: To be honest, when I look at my calendar after
- 1:27:45Speaker 3: March fifth, it's nothing. Nothing there. My world is ending
- 1:27:51Speaker 3: on March fifth.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: Hey, Spencer, Spencer, if you're still out there, has he
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: commented Phil.
- 1:27:57Speaker 5: Spencer Newhart has not been in the chat. I shamed
- 1:28:01Speaker 5: him for being too active in the chat one week,
- 1:28:03Speaker 5: and I think he.
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: If he is out there listening, I would like him
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: to give us a rating. Between zero and ten on
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: how well we did on this episode.
- 1:28:16Speaker 5: No, this is a nine to five. At least it's
- 1:28:18Speaker 5: up there. This is one of the better ones. Another
- 1:28:22Speaker 5: mogor one. He's We've got some good questions this week.
- 1:28:24Speaker 5: This is this is for Randall. It's a specific one.
- 1:28:26Speaker 5: You are the weapons expert, Randall. Have you heard of
- 1:28:28Speaker 5: the Walter Walder RS three straight pull bullpup hunting rifle family,
- 1:28:33Speaker 5: the one with the integrated suppressor? And is that monocock?
- 1:28:36Speaker 3: I would imagine that's a one piece receiver.
- 1:28:39Speaker 5: Yes. Then he had more to say, but that was
- 1:28:42Speaker 5: basically it.
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: Yes, I saw that it was recently released. I'm really
- 1:28:48Speaker 3: intrigued by bullpup rifles. Uh, there was a there's a
- 1:28:52Speaker 3: company called Defensive Edge out of Idaho that makes something
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: called the long Range Killing Machine and it has a
- 1:29:00Speaker 3: thirty inch barrel, but because of the bullpup arrangement, the
- 1:29:04Speaker 3: overall length is much shorter. So it's designed basically to
- 1:29:08Speaker 3: ride it up to the top of the mountain on
- 1:29:10Speaker 3: your back on a dirt bike. But bullpups offer the
- 1:29:13Speaker 3: advantage of having a longer barrel length compared to the
- 1:29:16Speaker 3: overall length of the rifle. Walther. I've never owned a Walther,
- 1:29:23Speaker 3: but interestingly against it, I think they made a like
- 1:29:27Speaker 3: a police sniper rifle, like a marksman rifle that was
- 1:29:32Speaker 3: a semi auto bullpup, so they have a bullpup legacy.
- 1:29:35Speaker 3: I'm also really intrigued by guys on forums that are
- 1:29:38Speaker 3: making their own bullpups with like homemade trigger linkages and
- 1:29:42Speaker 3: weird stocks, and it intrigues me and scares me at
- 1:29:45Speaker 3: the same time.
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: So you kind of had to explain it because I'm
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: looking at pictures and there's like, it looks like a
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: thousand variations of what a bullpup might be, So, like,
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: is there a definition of what a bullpup is?
- 1:29:57Speaker 3: A bullpup is essentially the the the action is further
- 1:30:02Speaker 3: back in the stock. Then the trigger is ahead of
- 1:30:05Speaker 3: the action.
- 1:30:07Speaker 4: So the action is almost like where you're yeah, you're
- 1:30:09Speaker 4: almost resting your cheek the action.
- 1:30:12Speaker 3: So instead of the instead of the action being in
- 1:30:15Speaker 3: front of the grip uh like the wrist of the stock,
- 1:30:19Speaker 3: the action is back further so that you know you
- 1:30:22Speaker 3: can have you can have this much barrel, but it
- 1:30:24Speaker 3: starts back here instead of starting out here.
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: Okay, and obviously I guess I guess it's sort of
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: the well, if it's the issue, but you got to
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: figure out how to connect the trigger to the to
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: the action.
- 1:30:35Speaker 3: Yeah, and yeah, there's like some you know, there's a
- 1:30:39Speaker 3: lot of like factory bullpup options, but you can also
- 1:30:43Speaker 3: find people sort of there's some companies that make like
- 1:30:47Speaker 3: a bullpup style chassis for Remington seven hundred and you
- 1:30:51Speaker 3: have it basically a trigger linkage. But uh, in the
- 1:30:55Speaker 3: age of suppressors, you know, overall length is is a
- 1:31:00Speaker 3: very important consideration. So yeah, when I think about big
- 1:31:04Speaker 3: Magnum cartridge, I want to get a big long barrel
- 1:31:06Speaker 3: on there. A bullpup would be mighty nice. That's weird
- 1:31:13Speaker 3: enough interesting. That was a weird enough tangent for me.
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: Anything else.
- 1:31:18Speaker 3: L r k M though, if you want to, if
- 1:31:21Speaker 3: you want to have your hair stand up, look up
- 1:31:23Speaker 3: an l r KM and the prices they fetch on
- 1:31:25Speaker 3: the used market.
- 1:31:26Speaker 5: Leland's asking your opinions on wild game tartar or tiger
- 1:31:30Speaker 5: meat or cannibal meat or or whatever all the terms
- 1:31:33Speaker 5: are for it. Do you guys that's something you guys
- 1:31:35Speaker 5: consume or prep prepare often?
- 1:31:39Speaker 4: Yes, Oh really, I think a burger is just better
- 1:31:44Speaker 4: we if you cook it.
- 1:31:45Speaker 3: We like eating. We like eating like beef tartar. Like
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: if we go to a restaurant that has some sort
- 1:31:52Speaker 3: of raw beef preparation, that's typically what we'll get as
- 1:31:55Speaker 3: a starter. And so yeah, we when we get like
- 1:31:58Speaker 3: a fresh animal home and then we have some backstraps,
- 1:32:01Speaker 3: we'll do some tartar.
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I enjoy it. I just often don't remember to
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: make it, and and I should do it more often
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: because it is delicious, But yeah, I just yeah, for
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: whatever reason, I don't know. My family's probably only eating
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: it a couple of times.
- 1:32:24Speaker 5: Nate Pow looking for recommendations on a pistol chest pack
- 1:32:28Speaker 5: and chest holder. I'm gonna needs a proper safety. You
- 1:32:31Speaker 5: guys have any any recommendations.
- 1:32:37Speaker 3: As far as how to carry it? I think so
- 1:32:40Speaker 3: I go back and forth on the chest.
- 1:32:42Speaker 5: I think he's he's looking for specific items like from
- 1:32:45Speaker 5: FAHF or something you guys could hut with.
- 1:32:49Speaker 3: F AHEF doesn't make I mean they use a it's
- 1:32:53Speaker 3: a it's a Rasco holster that's attached to the the
- 1:32:57Speaker 3: bino pack, right it was.
- 1:33:00Speaker 4: Yeah, they make a system that attaches to the bottom
- 1:33:04Speaker 4: of a bino harness or chest rig.
- 1:33:07Speaker 3: Yeah, there's a company called gun Fighters, Inc. That makes
- 1:33:11Speaker 3: a chest rig that you would wear under They also
- 1:33:17Speaker 3: make one that you would mount to your bino pack,
- 1:33:19Speaker 3: but they make one that you wear you would wear
- 1:33:21Speaker 3: under your bino pack because it's just sort of free
- 1:33:25Speaker 3: like it's it's literally just meant to be worn on
- 1:33:28Speaker 3: its own with nothing else rig to it. And I
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: like that quite a bit because you can take your
- 1:33:32Speaker 3: binos off, like if you're if you're butchering an animal
- 1:33:36Speaker 3: and you can just have that gun on your chest
- 1:33:39Speaker 3: when your hands are all bloody and you don't want
- 1:33:41Speaker 3: something hanging off like the big bino rig hanging off.
- 1:33:43Speaker 3: But I also go back and forth between like a
- 1:33:46Speaker 3: belt holster. Sometimes I'll put a belt holster on my
- 1:33:49Speaker 3: hip belt on my pack, but then you end up
- 1:33:52Speaker 3: carrying two holsters because you also want one that you
- 1:33:54Speaker 3: could wear if you drop your pack. So it all
- 1:33:57Speaker 3: comes down to individual, individual preference, I think. But there's
- 1:34:01Speaker 3: a lot of options out there.
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: Well, Paul, I think trying to solve for some of
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: this now instead of like he doesn't really offer a
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: holster anymore. It's basically the holster.
- 1:34:11Speaker 3: Hangar it's like the blade. It's a blade tech.
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: Yeah, And there's a quick detach system so that you
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: could have one holster but then have this attachment that
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: could be under your binyl harness. You could have another
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: one on your hip belt of your pack, and then
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: you can just move it around. I personally find it
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: to be too much when it's all on my chest,
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: and so I like to go to the hip. But yes,
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: every time I drop my pack. Yeah, I also started
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: wearing weapons.
- 1:34:38Speaker 3: I started wearing like a short thigh drop like a
- 1:34:43Speaker 3: drop panel, and I thought, I've like seen people sit
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: back and forth say, oh, you don't want to wear
- 1:34:49Speaker 3: that when you're hiking. You don't like it's it's too cumbersome.
- 1:34:52Speaker 3: But I don't really notice it. And then I have
- 1:34:55Speaker 3: that gun on my hip at all times. Take my
- 1:34:58Speaker 3: pack off, take my biny harness off. It's one less
- 1:35:01Speaker 3: thing when you want to shed a layer to mess with, right, And.
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, send me the link to that whatever you're using.
- 1:35:08Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I run this thing that it's it's just
- 1:35:11Speaker 4: a clip so like I can open it up, put
- 1:35:14Speaker 4: it on my pack, and then if I want to
- 1:35:17Speaker 4: drop my pack, I just pop it off my pack
- 1:35:18Speaker 4: and put it on clip it onto my belt works pretty.
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: Good, Phil, anything that has to be answered yet? Or
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: can we say there's this one for me? It's okay,
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: Well I have to be the last one.
- 1:35:32Speaker 3: It's good.
- 1:35:33Speaker 5: I mentioned this like low five pixel art fishing game
- 1:35:35Speaker 5: that came out recently called Cast and Chill Cast and Chill,
- 1:35:39Speaker 5: and Coole is asking if I've played it yet. I
- 1:35:41Speaker 5: have it downloaded on my switch to, and I've been
- 1:35:44Speaker 5: holding off because I thought I might stream it the
- 1:35:46Speaker 5: first time I played it, which I still might do,
- 1:35:49Speaker 5: but I haven't played it yet.
- 1:35:50Speaker 3: I didn't realize you got a switch to. Oh yeah,
- 1:35:53Speaker 3: I just got my first switch Yes.
- 1:35:55Speaker 5: And that's the thing is if maybe if I stream
- 1:35:57Speaker 5: after we play some Cast and Chill, I'll play some
- 1:35:59Speaker 5: Breath with the Wild. Because Randall be getting a switch
- 1:36:01Speaker 5: and playing Zelda had me restart a playthrough of Breath.
- 1:36:04Speaker 3: Of the Yea. I got some sort of rising deal
- 1:36:08Speaker 3: where I got a free switch. So I'm getting back
- 1:36:10Speaker 3: into video games. Never too late to start something new.
- 1:36:14Speaker 5: Couldn't agree more, Randall, let's call it kids, go outside.
- 1:36:19Speaker 5: This might have been our longest I think this is
- 1:36:22Speaker 5: our longest episode forget it. Forget video games, go outside,
- 1:36:27Speaker 5: you know, find a healthy balance.
- 1:36:29Speaker 3: And that six minutes. That's a hell of a warm
- 1:36:32Speaker 3: up for the grand finale spectacular.
- 1:36:34Speaker 5: That's right.
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: I hope you guys all enjoyed it. Look like they
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: most of them stuck around for the entirety of it.
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: Thank you all for watching and listening, and uh, we'll
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: see you again next week, same time, Meat Eater Radio Live,
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: same place, Deuces Later,
