- 1:06Sean McAllister: Eight things you may not know about Las Vegas' Chinatown.
- 1:10Sean McAllister: In fact, maybe you didn't even know we had one.
- 1:13Dayna Roselli: The Cosmopolitan gets ready to hand things over to MGM Resorts International, but not without a major surprise for workers at the Resort Casino.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: We're paying out$5,000 to each of them.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: That's more than$27 million.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: Let's get to it and kick things off.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: Spin that wheel.
- 1:40Sean McAllister: Welcome to Vegas Revealed, episode 118, Sean McAllister here along with Dana Roselli.
- 1:46Sean McAllister: And Dana, have you ever wondered what it would feel like to like hit a jackpot or win the lottery or something, even if it was a smaller amount.
- 1:56Sean McAllister: Not it doesn't have to be a million dollars.
- 1:58Dayna Roselli: But anything's good for me, a hundred bucks.
- 2:00Sean McAllister: Exactly.
- 2:01Sean McAllister: I've always wondered what that would feel like.
- 2:03Sean McAllister: And now a lot of people here in Las Vegas do know.
- 2:06Dayna Roselli: I know.
- 2:07Dayna Roselli: We're so excited for the employees of the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas.
- 2:11Dayna Roselli: Amazing resort casino on the strip.
- 2:13Dayna Roselli: You know, when it opened, it immediately was cool and hip and fun and different, and they they do things different.
- 2:20Dayna Roselli: It changed hands once and has been run and owned by Blackstone.
- 2:26Dayna Roselli: And last week, because this runs on a Saturday, this week that just passed, they gave away$5,000 to each and every employee, which they call co-stars.
- 2:39Sean McAllister: That is absolutely incredible.
- 2:42Sean McAllister: I have never heard of any casino in Las Vegas doing something like that.
- 2:47Sean McAllister: The companies are few and far between that do this kind of thing.
- 2:52Sean McAllister: That payout, the bonus payout, equals more than$27 million in bonuses that they're just giving to employees for being rock star co-stars.
- 3:05Dayna Roselli: Oh, I love it.
- 3:06Dayna Roselli: I mean, listen, they were just having an employee appreciation event.
- 3:08Dayna Roselli: Everyone was excited to be there, and then they made the big announcement.
- 3:12Dayna Roselli: And then you can just hear the crowd roaring.
- 3:15Dayna Roselli: I think everyone was really in shock.
- 3:17Dayna Roselli: Let's listen to what a couple of the employees had to say.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, what?
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: How amazing was this?
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: We just had the biggest coastal event, and thanks to Blackstone, thanks to the Cosmopolitan.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: I have no words, honestly.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: I'm still in shock.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: But the gratitude that I feel from a coastal perspective and just being here to represent everyone is amazing.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: I I the sentiment that if you go and talk to everyone is OMG.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Like what just happened?
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: I can't believe this is what happened.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: Normally I'm known for just talking all day and speech I'm speechless, right?
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: I've been here since pre-opening, but since day one, they've always stressed that the company culture is number one.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: They've always stressed that we are a people-focused institution, and that has not changed in the last 11 and a half years.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: So exciting for them.
- 4:13Sean McAllister: But let's hear from John Gray, the president and COO of Blackstone, about why they did this in the first place.
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: We're just hugely appreciative of their efforts.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: We've owned this hotel since 2014.
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: It's been an incredible run, an incredible partnership.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: The employees here, the co-stars they're called, have worked so hard, and we wanted to give them a sense of how much we appreciated their efforts.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: It's really a moment of joy and celebration for what's been accomplished.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: So we bought the Cosmopolitan back in 2014.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: And at the time it had opened just a few years earlier.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: It had been in financial distress, and we came in with new management, lots of fresh capital, fresh ideas, and really transformed the place.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: But what brings the place alive is the co-stars, the energy, the caring they bring.
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: That's what's so special.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: I couldn't feel better about what's been accomplished here.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: Um, particularly when you think about the last couple of years coming through a pandemic.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: It was just a little over two years ago when this hotel casino was shut down, and today the place is thriving.
- 5:21Sean McAllister: And Dana, this is such an incredible uh show of appreciation that Blackstone uh gave to their employees for such dedicated service, for making the experience at the Cosmopolitan what it is.
- 5:37Sean McAllister: And these really are the waning days of Blackstone's ownership of the Cosmopolitan.
- 5:43Dayna Roselli: Yeah, the Nevada Gaming Control Board just recently approved MGM Resort International's acquisition for the operating rights of the Cosmo.
- 5:52Dayna Roselli: So this paves the way pretty much uh for the deal to close like next month.
- 5:57Dayna Roselli: So they'll change hands pretty quick, and everyone's going, oh man, but you know, and and I feel like maybe that's why they did this too.
- 6:05Dayna Roselli: Just, you know, it's been a great run.
- 6:07Dayna Roselli: We appreciated you.
- 6:08Sean McAllister: Well, and it makes me also wonder the a thought that popped into my head, I'm like, hmm, I wonder if Blackstone's gonna be buying another Las Vegas property, and could like the the loyalty that they earn from their employees with a move like this, could that, you know, shift some people's decision to to follow Blackstone if they buy another Las Vegas property.
- 6:34Sean McAllister: Who knows?
- 6:35Sean McAllister: That's not on the that's not in the plans, nothing's been announced, but it just made me curious.
- 6:40Sean McAllister: Like, would that would this move make people loyal to them?
- 6:44Dayna Roselli: Yeah, I know a lot of people on Twitter that love the Cosmopolitans loyalty program, their points program, are a little worried that, you know, when it changes hands, you know, will the points and the way that they're treated and all that, will it all move over and and will it be, you know, comparable to what they've enjoyed so far?
- 7:04Dayna Roselli: So everyone's kind of on edge about that.
- 7:06Dayna Roselli: But you know, MGM's gonna take over the operation, and you know, we have an amazing slew of casinos on the Las Vegas strip that are run by MGM.
- 7:16Dayna Roselli: They're just unloading the Mirage now over to Hard Rock, so that also, you know, switches that over.
- 7:22Dayna Roselli: So it's gonna be there's a lot of changes going on on the strip.
- 7:25Sean McAllister: There are, and San Manuel Gaming, taking over control of the palms, just having the grand opening there.
- 7:31Sean McAllister: So it does.
- 7:32Sean McAllister: It feels like a a new era.
- 7:34Sean McAllister: Every, every so often there's a shift that we see happening on the strip with with management, things changing hands.
- 7:43Sean McAllister: So this is one of those times, and you know, we'll see how everything pans out.
- 7:48Sean McAllister: But man, Blackstone certainly making a mark with employees and doling out five thousand dollar bonuses to each and every one of them.
- 7:58Sean McAllister: Well done, Blackstone.
- 7:59Dayna Roselli: Yeah, that's great.
- 8:00Dayna Roselli: And if you're a sports book person, also to note BetMGM is gonna be taking over the cosmopolitan sports book as well.
- 8:08Dayna Roselli: So if that's something you were worried about, that's what's going on over there.
- 8:13Sean McAllister: You know, Dana, uh a a section of Las Vegas that especially out-of-town visitors, people new who move here to Las Vegas, which is a lot of people at this point, um, may not realize that there is a section of town just west of the Las Vegas Strip that is Chinatown.
- 8:34Sean McAllister: And it's a really unique neighborhood.
- 8:36Dayna Roselli: It is.
- 8:37Dayna Roselli: And like I've always kind of been a central person where I've lived.
- 8:42Dayna Roselli: I used to live in the southwest of Las Vegas, but I should say live and work, because a lot of the companies I worked for, uh, one was Channel 8, KLAS, another was channel 13, KTNV.
- 8:53Dayna Roselli: Both were kind of around that area.
- 8:56Dayna Roselli: And so I've driven by Chinatown and up and down Spring Mountain so many times.
- 9:00Dayna Roselli: Um, I was aware it was there, but I always still wondered like when does it, like, where does it start?
- 9:06Dayna Roselli: Where does it end?
- 9:07Dayna Roselli: You know, and I haven't tried every single thing in Chinatown.
- 9:12Dayna Roselli: I drive by and go, I should.
- 9:14Dayna Roselli: Ooh, I'd like to go there.
- 9:15Dayna Roselli: Oh, what's that?
- 9:16Dayna Roselli: But anyway, we found a great article from uh I actually saw the article because there's a new Twitter handle that kind of focuses on Chinatown.
- 9:26Dayna Roselli: So I clicked on it and I found eight things you didn't know about the Las Vegas Chinatown.
- 9:32Dayna Roselli: And I thought, let's go over this on the podcast.
- 9:34Dayna Roselli: There's a few restaurants that I've gone to that are always delicious.
- 9:38Dayna Roselli: And sometimes at lunchtime, it's a little packed too.
- 9:41Dayna Roselli: You gotta like get there early because everyone kind of wants to go to the same places.
- 9:45Dayna Roselli: But they have a lot of great things.
- 9:47Dayna Roselli: I've also done some fun karaoke rooms over there on Spring Mountain.
- 9:51Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 9:52Dayna Roselli: They have a good little and I've gone into the main kind of uh I don't know what you'd call it, the main area of Chinatown, kind of the staple, big, big plaza.
- 10:02Dayna Roselli: There's cool stores in there.
- 10:03Dayna Roselli: If you love knick-knacks and cool things, they have little kind of pharmacy type stores as well.
- 10:09Dayna Roselli: They have uh different spots for food and restaurant, and it's actually really cool to just like walk around and browse.
- 10:18Dayna Roselli: And then a couple of the things um that they have on the list for the eight things.
- 10:23Dayna Roselli: Should we go through them?
- 10:24Sean McAllister: Yeah, let's go through them.
- 10:25Sean McAllister: I guess we should start with the architecture, right?
- 10:28Sean McAllister: You'll know that you are in Chinatown because the architecture changes.
- 10:34Sean McAllister: There's a lot of examples that are like the Sang Dynasty architectural temples and the building designs, and yeah, I think you can also recognize the uh names of the restaurants that'll that'll make you realize you're in Chinatown too.
- 10:52Dayna Roselli: For sure.
- 10:53Dayna Roselli: Another thing is, which I didn't even realize, it's so big, apparently it spans three zip codes 89102, 89103, and 89146.
- 11:04Dayna Roselli: That's how large Chinatown is.
- 11:07Dayna Roselli: And it's home to more than 150 restaurants.
- 11:11Dayna Roselli: Jeez.
- 11:12Dayna Roselli: I know, many with fusion or Asian themes, obviously.
- 11:15Dayna Roselli: So, I mean, even if you're visiting here, you know, if you're vacationing here, people are saying Chinatown should be on your list of places.
- 11:23Dayna Roselli: And I always get visitors that say, we can go to the strip, but we want to know some of the local places, some of the things that are cool.
- 11:31Dayna Roselli: And I think so.
- 11:32Dayna Roselli: We're trying to give you some ideas here that maybe you would want to visit Chinatown.
- 11:36Dayna Roselli: They have Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, other Asian street food, desserts, tea shops, all sorts of stuff.
- 11:44Sean McAllister: Yeah, I know people who go over there for boba tea, and I there's great noodle restaurants over there.
- 11:50Sean McAllister: I know a lot of uh strip entertainers who get out of their shows, you know, pretty late at night, and the restaurants over in Chinatown are still open.
- 12:01Sean McAllister: So a lot of strip entertainers will go to Chinatown for meals because things are open late.
- 12:08Dayna Roselli: Yeah, definitely.
- 12:09Dayna Roselli: No, you're right.
- 12:10Dayna Roselli: I mean, because especially these days, since COVID, some things are closing earlier.
- 12:14Sean McAllister: Like at nine o'clock.
- 12:15Dayna Roselli: Yeah, and you're like, wait a minute, what happened to yeah?
- 12:17Sean McAllister: So like what happens if I have a late afternoon thing?
- 12:21Sean McAllister: Uh, in addition to restaurants, there's over a dozen churches to serve the population over there in in Chinatown.
- 12:28Sean McAllister: So I mean that's obviously another uh, you know, instrumental part of community is having places of worship.
- 12:37Sean McAllister: Um, as we're seeing popping up all over Las Vegas, there are also a couple marijuana dispensaries in the area, too.
- 12:44Dayna Roselli: That's right.
- 12:44Dayna Roselli: And they also have the Las Vegas Little Theater, and apparently it's older than Chinatown itself, so it's one of the big attractions there.
- 12:53Dayna Roselli: And I must say, Sean, I did not know that they actually, when I've driven by here, that it was actually like a theater still, okay?
- 13:02Dayna Roselli: But it is apparently.
- 13:04Dayna Roselli: They showcase plays by well-known authors, there's theater performances, and apparently acting classes are available there.
- 13:12Sean McAllister: Yeah, it's it turns out it's Southern Nevada's oldest community theater.
- 13:18Sean McAllister: It was founded by Jack Bell and Jack Nicholson back in 1978, which is super cool.
- 13:26Dayna Roselli: Yeah, I love it.
- 13:27Dayna Roselli: See, we're learning all this stuff.
- 13:28Dayna Roselli: The neighborhood also features Chinese culture and traditions and you know the foot spas, very popular.
- 13:35Sean McAllister: They are very popular, yeah.
- 13:37Dayna Roselli: They also have a Chinese bookstore, and it's the only Chinese bookstore in Nevada.
- 13:46Dayna Roselli: It's called the Great Wall Bookstore.
- 13:48Dayna Roselli: Isn't that cool?
- 13:49Sean McAllister: Wow.
- 13:50Sean McAllister: Six Asian supermarkets are over there too.
- 13:53Sean McAllister: And if you have not been into an Asian supermarket, it is such a cool experience.
- 14:00Sean McAllister: There's obviously products that you'll find there that you're not gonna find if you go to whatever your neighborhood grocery store is, whether it's Smith's, Albertson's, Raleigh's, whatever your store is.
- 14:14Sean McAllister: These are super cool.
- 14:16Sean McAllister: There's so many different kinds of candies.
- 14:20Sean McAllister: There's dried foods, there's uh the fish markets where the fish is like out on ice.
- 14:27Sean McAllister: They have live fish in there that you can uh have turned into uh you know prepared food for yourself, or you can take it home and prepare it however you want.
- 14:39Dayna Roselli: I mean, that's a thing, all this is uh just cool experiences, right?
- 14:43Sean McAllister: It is people love that stuff, and it's uh uh and it's exposure to another culture, which people think of Las Vegas, and you know, unfortunately, they don't necessarily think of a lot of culture, but we do have it here.
- 14:59Sean McAllister: You just have to look for it and find it.
- 15:02Dayna Roselli: So that's our well, I think we hit eight.
- 15:04Dayna Roselli: That's our eight our eight things.
- 15:06Dayna Roselli: We might have gone gone over eight because we started chit-chatting about different stuff, but um really cool to check out.
- 15:13Dayna Roselli: Again, it's mostly Spring Mountain Road is the main drag, but there's other roads around that.
- 15:18Dayna Roselli: Like we said, it spans three zip codes.
- 15:20Dayna Roselli: Check out Chinatown, and again, that is to the west of the Las Vegas Strip.
- 15:24Sean McAllister: And I know, Dana, that I did just say that Las Vegas people don't think of it as having a lot of culture, but what's part of Las Vegas culture is the mob history that we have here, and that has recently started to pop up again.
- 15:40Dayna Roselli: Literally, resurface.
- 15:41Sean McAllister: Uh resurface, yeah.
- 15:43Sean McAllister: As water in Lake Mead is continuing to recede because of the drought conditions here in the western United States, um, there have been some uh rather gruesome discoveries made.
- 15:56Sean McAllister: There have been bodies in barrels and and remains of people that have surfaced as these lake waters dry up, and a lot of people are connecting it back to Las Vegas's mob history.
- 16:14Dayna Roselli: They sure are.
- 16:15Dayna Roselli: Everyone's going, you know, once they do a little more investigating, like, is this gonna be someone that might be a uh known name that has been missing for a long time and we never knew how yeah, I don't know.
- 16:28Dayna Roselli: Or, you know, but then again, I think about if someone has been missing a loved one for many, many years and it's gone unsolved, this could in some ways, not in a positive way, bring some peace to a family who's been searching for someone for years, you know, they have all those unsolved cases.
- 16:49Sean McAllister: And wondering, is this person still out there?
- 16:52Dayna Roselli: Right.
- 16:52Dayna Roselli: I had a friend write me, um, my friend Daryl wrote me on Instagram when he saw I was talking about it in one of my stories and said he paddleboards out there at least like two or three times, I think he said a month.
- 17:03Dayna Roselli: And he said just recently over the last two to three months, he's really noticed the lake level come down like feet.
- 17:10Dayna Roselli: He said, There are little islands popping up that were never there before.
- 17:14Dayna Roselli: Oh my gosh.
- 17:14Dayna Roselli: There are boat holes that are coming and peeking out from uh the water.
- 17:18Dayna Roselli: And he was like, it's just gotten really, really bad, and I've noticed it so much lately.
- 17:24Dayna Roselli: So it is a concern, and I think a lot of us think, oh, the lake level was going down a little bit.
- 17:30Dayna Roselli: We'll take, you know, it'll go back up.
- 17:32Dayna Roselli: But we've had such a span of what, it's been like four years since I feel like since we've had like a major, major rainstorm that lasted a full day and just poured.
- 17:44Dayna Roselli: I don't know, it's been a long time.
- 17:46Sean McAllister: Well, and I know that you mentioned this um a couple weeks ago.
- 17:49Sean McAllister: I don't know if it was on social media or if we were having a conversation, um, but just about the flooding that Las Vegas used to have.
- 17:57Sean McAllister: Yeah.
- 17:57Sean McAllister: And I remember when I moved here, and in the year or so before moving here, there would be crazy images of people stranded in cars because of the flood waters that just inundated neighborhoods.
- 18:13Sean McAllister: Um, obviously there's been a lot of flood control infrastructure that's been built to help alleviate some of that, but also we're not getting the rainwater to make that happen.
- 18:23Sean McAllister: No.
- 18:24Dayna Roselli: Yeah, it was me.
- 18:25Dayna Roselli: I was on Twitter and I was I was saying I used to report the helicopter from like 2004 to a little over two and a half years, and I would get called in all the time.
- 18:34Dayna Roselli: All the time, especially through the winter and then the monsoon season, you know, like which starts uh what is July, August.
- 18:41Dayna Roselli: Not only would I get called in in the morning, but then like it would last like all day, or there would be patchy, you know, moments.
- 18:47Dayna Roselli: It would clear up, then it would come back, and then it would clear up, and there would be a lot of flooding.
- 18:52Dayna Roselli: And we covered it all the time.
- 18:55Dayna Roselli: So yeah, I'm like, whatever happened to those days, you know, of that?
- 19:00Dayna Roselli: But you're right, obviously there were more issues on the road because you know, they've made so many improvements since then with the roadways and the flood channels and all that thing, all that kind of stuff.
- 19:10Dayna Roselli: But even just a normal rainy day like that hasn't happened in a long time.
- 19:16Sean McAllister: No, it hasn't.
- 19:17Sean McAllister: No, and obviously, rain is only uh uh a portion of the water that we need to to fill up Lake Mead.
- 19:23Sean McAllister: A lot of the water, well, it does.
- 19:26Sean McAllister: A lot of that water comes from the Colorado River, which is fed by the snow melt and the Rocky Mountains, the runoff, they haven't been getting the snow pack that you know they've been used to, that we've all been used to.
- 19:40Sean McAllister: So the drought continues, and as it does, more mysteries of the depths from Lake Mead will resurface.
- 19:48Dayna Roselli: I know, and you were saying, so the whole reason we even started talking about that is we're talking about the mob and the history and stuff like that, and you were saying Oscar Goodman is starting to speak out now.
- 19:55Dayna Roselli: What did he say?
- 19:56Sean McAllister: Yeah, he spoke with a local news channel here in Las Vegas, uh, and they reached out to him for his comment because of the presumed connection with a body found in a barrel.
- 20:09Sean McAllister: And police had said that because of the shoes that that person was wearing, they dated the murder to the late 70s, early 80s, which would have been in that mob era.
- 20:24Sean McAllister: Oscar Goodman, our longtime former Las Vegas mayor, you may or may not know, uh, was a lawyer for the alleged mob.
- 20:34Sean McAllister: He always likes to point out that the mob is alleged.
- 20:38Sean McAllister: Right.
- 20:38Sean McAllister: And he defended a lot of the the gangsters that were brought up on a a slew of different kinds of charges, some including murder.
- 20:48Sean McAllister: Uh, but he pointed out that the murder weapon of choice, the shooting weapon of choice, was a 22, a 22 caliber pistol.
- 20:56Sean McAllister: He said, so if it comes back that these investigations reveal that that is the cause of death for some of these bodies that resurface, um, then it could be linked back to that era and potentially some of the guys who he defended, but he says, Hey, you know what?
- 21:20Sean McAllister: I didn't order the hits, so I have no idea what was going on.
- 21:24Dayna Roselli: Of course he doesn't.
- 21:25Dayna Roselli: We've had Oscar on our show before, as you mentioned, and yeah, he's always a good conversation, right?
- 21:30Dayna Roselli: And he doesn't hold back.
- 21:31Dayna Roselli: That's what we love about it.
- 21:32Sean McAllister: No, he doesn't.
- 21:33Dayna Roselli: He was in casino, too, for anyone that didn't know that's listening.
- 21:36Dayna Roselli: He's also in the movie casino.
- 21:38Sean McAllister: Kind of playing himself.
- 21:39Sean McAllister: Yeah, basically.
- 21:40Sean McAllister: Yeah, mob attorney.
- 21:42Dayna Roselli: All right, well, so that's what we got going on here.
- 21:44Dayna Roselli: A little fun and a little bit of mystery.
- 21:47Dayna Roselli: A couple shows added to the list just this week.
- 21:51Dayna Roselli: Uh, Silksonic, they've been performing over at Park MGM, but they've added more shows in August.
- 21:57Dayna Roselli: So if you didn't get a chance to see Silksonic, They do have shows through May, and then they've added like August 3rd, 5th, 6th, 10th, 12th, 13th, 16th, 18, 19.
- 22:06Dayna Roselli: You can get tickets by Googling them and going to Park MGM and buying them.
- 22:12Sean McAllister: And go see it.
- 22:13Sean McAllister: If you have the chance, it is so worth it.
- 22:17Sean McAllister: Such a great show.
- 22:19Sean McAllister: Also adding shows.
- 22:20Sean McAllister: Shin Lim, he is uh the resident illusionist over at the Mirage.
- 22:26Sean McAllister: Uh you may know him from America's Got Talent.
- 22:30Sean McAllister: I know I watched during his season and he is so uh incredible.
- 22:36Sean McAllister: He's got great hair first.
- 22:38Sean McAllister: Okay, well, but his illusions are just they are spectacular.
- 22:43Sean McAllister: And you can now see more of them in person as Shin Lim expands his uh dates of shows at the Mirage, November 24th through 26th, December 22nd through 26th.
- 22:58Sean McAllister: Um and he's gonna have an additional show at 7:30 on Tuesday, December 27th.
- 23:05Sean McAllister: So great to see that Shin Lim is expanding his footprint here in Vegas as well.
- 23:10Sean McAllister: Love having him and really uh phenomenal illusionist.
- 23:15Sean McAllister: A different a different variety of illusion than you see from from other magicians in Vegas too.
- 23:23Dayna Roselli: We like variety, right?
- 23:24Sean McAllister: We do.
- 23:24Dayna Roselli: Hey, and a big congratulations to Carlos Santana.
- 23:27Dayna Roselli: He extended over at the House of Blues.
- 23:29Dayna Roselli: We'll talk more about that next week.
- 23:30Dayna Roselli: This week he's having a big uh kind of a 10-year anniversary press conference, and we'll be able to at least uh hear what Carlos has to say.
- 23:39Dayna Roselli: Um he's been playing the House of Blues for 10 years, but he's been in Las Vegas even longer than that.
- 23:45Dayna Roselli: But curious to see, you know, like he must love the intimate experience that he gets here in Vegas.
- 23:50Dayna Roselli: We've interviewed him many, many times before, and he's extending, so they'll have Carlos over at Mandalay Bay for a little bit longer.
- 23:58Dayna Roselli: At least I think he's got shows.
- 24:00Dayna Roselli: What did we just say?
- 24:01Sean McAllister: We just did the end of the year for sure.
- 24:03Sean McAllister: Through the end of the year, yeah.
- 24:05Sean McAllister: All right, should we get to our tips?
- 24:07Sean McAllister: Let's do it.
- 24:10Sean McAllister: Dana, our first tip comes to us courtesy of the Kentucky Derby.
- 24:16Sean McAllister: What a you had on a hat.
- 24:18Dayna Roselli: I did.
- 24:18Dayna Roselli: What a bummer the end of that.
- 24:20Dayna Roselli: Well, it was like a good news for people who picked the underdog, right?
- 24:23Sean McAllister: People do like the underdog, the dark horse.
- 24:26Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 24:26Dayna Roselli: The Kentucky Derby.
- 24:28Dayna Roselli: Um, if you don't know and you're listening, um, the under underdog, a late edition into the race, won the whole thing.
- 24:37Dayna Roselli: So uh horse number 21, we were in a room full of people up at the legacy club at Circa, and I don't think one single person in the entire room won anything.
- 24:49Sean McAllister: No, it was, I mean, it was kind of comical.
- 24:52Sean McAllister: Yeah.
- 24:52Sean McAllister: Everybody, you know, the the bell rings, the horses come shooting out of the gates, everybody's cheering, they're pulling for their horse, they're shouting numbers, they're, you know, watching the jockeys go around that racetrack there at Kentucky Downs.
- 25:09Sean McAllister: And then as the horses started to approach the finish line, it got quieter and quieter.
- 25:17Sean McAllister: And when the race ended, everyone was like, huh?
- 25:22Sean McAllister: What just happened?
- 25:23Dayna Roselli: What just happened?
- 25:24Dayna Roselli: Who I the I didn't even see this horse on the list, I feel like, and I placed my bet, what, like two hours before, uh, maybe three hours before the race.
- 25:32Sean McAllister: Yeah.
- 25:32Dayna Roselli: Yeah, so it was a late edition.
- 25:34Sean McAllister: It was a late entry.
- 25:35Sean McAllister: One horse had to drop out.
- 25:36Sean McAllister: He came in, uh last minute edition for the the night before had happened, so there wasn't a lot of opportunity to bet on this horse.
- 25:45Dayna Roselli: Anyway, that's not our tip.
- 25:47Sean McAllister: No, it's not.
- 25:48Sean McAllister: That was just some color.
- 25:49Sean McAllister: That's what was happening.
- 25:51Dayna Roselli: That was color commentary.
- 25:52Dayna Roselli: Our tip is if you've never been to the like our tip is if you've never been to the legacy club at Circa Las Vegas in downtown, you gotta go if you love a good view.
- 26:05Sean McAllister: You do.
- 26:06Sean McAllister: It's up on top of Circa.
- 26:09Sean McAllister: What is it?
- 26:10Sean McAllister: 60, is it 60 floors?
- 26:12Sean McAllister: Whatever the top button is that you can push at Circa, that's where the Legacy Club is.
- 26:17Dayna Roselli: Yeah, it's a classy place, uh, really beautiful view.
- 26:20Dayna Roselli: They have an indoor, outdoor area, beautiful bar.
- 26:23Dayna Roselli: I loved the decor, windows all around.
- 26:27Dayna Roselli: Let me tell you, go get a cocktail up there.
- 26:29Dayna Roselli: I think you'll love it.
- 26:30Dayna Roselli: There's tons of history about Las Vegas on the wall.
- 26:32Dayna Roselli: Speaking of mayor, former Mayor Goodman, a pick old picture of him and Carolyn, our current uh mayor, on the wall, and then tons of pictures of people who've really made an impact on Las Vegas through the years.
- 26:45Sean McAllister: Yeah, and so that's where the Legacy Club gets its name because all the people who have really contributed to the legacy of Las Vegas are uh named and their likenesses, some of them are up there as well.
- 27:00Dayna Roselli: Yeah, really cool place.
- 27:01Dayna Roselli: So check that out.
- 27:02Dayna Roselli: Remember, Cerca is a 21 and over property.
- 27:06Sean McAllister: It is.
- 27:07Dayna Roselli: Or is it 18?
- 27:08Sean McAllister: Uh adult.
- 27:10Sean McAllister: Uh 21.
- 27:11Sean McAllister: Is it 21?
- 27:11Sean McAllister: Drink yeah, I think it's 21.
- 27:13Sean McAllister: Yeah, to drink and gamble.
- 27:14Sean McAllister: Okay.
- 27:15Sean McAllister: What we're made of.
- 27:16Dayna Roselli: What we're made of here in Las Vegas.
- 27:18Dayna Roselli: All right.
- 27:19Dayna Roselli: Well, I want to talk about Mad Apple quick because you went and did a behind the scenes story that has not aired yet on Vegason.
- 27:24Dayna Roselli: So we can't get into tons of detail about that.
- 27:27Dayna Roselli: But that's a show uh that runs at visitlosvegas.com.
- 27:30Dayna Roselli: But you went behind the scenes and did a whole thing, and that show's getting ready to open with preview performances May 12th, and then the grand opening May 26th.
- 27:40Dayna Roselli: What is Mad Apple about, Sean?
- 27:42Sean McAllister: So Mad Apple has taken over the theater at New York, New York, where uh the show Zumanity used to be, another Cirque du Soleil show.
- 27:51Sean McAllister: Um, but this is a new kind of Cirque du Soleil show.
- 27:56Sean McAllister: I don't know that they've had a a show under their umbrella um that has been a little bit more like a variety show than the what we've come to know as a cirque show, if that makes any sense.
- 28:12Sean McAllister: Because in Mad Apple, there is uh live music, there's singers, there are uh comedians, right?
- 28:22Sean McAllister: Comedians, there's magic, there's um d acrobatic basketball players.
- 28:29Dayna Roselli: Ooh, that's fun.
- 28:30Sean McAllister: So like they kind of and it's a nod to uh like uh Harlem Globetrotters.
- 28:36Sean McAllister: So, you know, the the guys that jump up off a trampoline, do flips, and then make a basket.
- 28:43Sean McAllister: So there's like really cool stuff.
- 28:45Sean McAllister: The soundtrack is going to be a lot of like New York music who have you know come from New York, songs that mention New York, there's a a big hip-hop element to it.
- 29:01Sean McAllister: Um you know, the early days of hip hop with breakdancing, all that really cool.
- 29:07Sean McAllister: Plus, there's going to be elements of Cirque du Soleil mixed in um that you've come to know a lot of the acrobatics and and aerial acts, that kind of thing.
- 29:18Dayna Roselli: Great costumes, all that stuff.
- 29:19Sean McAllister: And there are bars on stage.
- 29:21Sean McAllister: Oh, I love that.
- 29:22Dayna Roselli: Yeah, I I was reading when they sent out the original press release that the whole experience includes like what happens before the show, right?
- 29:30Dayna Roselli: Exactly.
- 29:31Dayna Roselli: There's like a whole There's a whole vibe.
- 29:32Dayna Roselli: Like you get vibed.
- 29:33Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 29:34Sean McAllister: And and the entertainers are actually out mingling with the audience before the show to add to the whole vibe.
- 29:44Sean McAllister: And you're gonna have to wait until uh the episode of Vegas on comes out at visitlasvegas.com to uh really appreciate how they're going to bring this vibe to life before the show.
- 29:57Sean McAllister: But you definitely want to plan to be in there in the theater to spend some time before showtime.
- 30:03Sean McAllister: Love it.
- 30:04Dayna Roselli: All right, and next week uh we've talked about this before, but we are going to a brand new restaurant at the forum shops this weekend for a big grand opening party, and then we will be talking with Bill Rancig and Juliana Rancig about the new restaurant because it's kind of emulating the restaurant that they already have in Chicago, right?
- 30:23Sean McAllister: Yeah.
- 30:23Dayna Roselli: RPM.
- 30:24Sean McAllister: RPM.
- 30:25Sean McAllister: And I'm also interested in Juliana Rancig's take on uh Vegas as a host city for so many big red carpet events that we've seen recently.
- 30:37Sean McAllister: Of course, Juliana spent years as a a host at e Entertainment Television doing all the biggest red carpets.
- 30:45Sean McAllister: So it'll be interesting to hear what she has to say about that.
- 30:47Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 30:48Dayna Roselli: And then her husband, Bill, I mean, the the first apprentice winner ever, right?
- 30:52Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 30:52Dayna Roselli: I mean, that was way back in the day.
- 30:55Dayna Roselli: And I'm sure he's got stories for days about that.
- 30:57Dayna Roselli: I don't know if we'll we'll touch on that.
- 30:58Dayna Roselli: We'll leave that to uh maybe another podcast.
- 31:02Sean McAllister: Before Don was president.
- 31:03Sean McAllister: That's right.
- 31:04Dayna Roselli: Um, it'll be interesting to catch up with them.
- 31:06Dayna Roselli: They are now in the business of food and and drink and beverage and family.
- 31:10Dayna Roselli: In family.
- 31:11Dayna Roselli: So we'll chat with them, and that will be on next week's show.
- 31:15Dayna Roselli: Have a great week, everyone.
- 31:17Sean McAllister: You're fired.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: Let's go back.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: Let's go, let's go, let's go.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: Let's go, baby.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: Let's go.
