- 0:05Welcome to the Real Life Theology podcast. Today we're launching
- 0:08a new series featuring talks from Renew.org's
- 0:12Amazing Baptisms event. In this opening episode, Scott Sager
- 0:16introduces the event and shares some of the history behind the Restoration Movement.
- 0:24Anyway, my name is Scott Sager. I'm the VP for Church Relations and
- 0:27Spiritual Development at Lipscomb. I also teach in the Bible department.
- 0:31All 3 of my courses are tomorrow, so I'm here all day today and grateful
- 0:35to be here. I also preach for the Church of Christ in Green Hills,
- 0:39which was also called the Granny White Church of Christ for
- 0:42most of its tenure. Delighted that you're here.
- 0:46I've been at Lipscomb for about 14 years. I moved here from Texas because
- 0:50I felt like Aslan was on the move, and I've never felt that more than
- 0:54I do right now. It's a spiritually alive time for
- 0:57the next generation, and it's fun to get to work with them each and
- 1:01every day. But over the course of the last 10 years or so,
- 1:05I've been on a quest to serve Churches of Christ and to serve Churches
- 1:09of Christ well, but to also be getting to know
- 1:13our partners, our neighbors. I mean, if we did that
- 1:1623andMe thing where you spit into a little cylinder and
- 1:21you send it off and it sends it back and it tells you what your
- 1:24DNA is, you know, the people with the closest DNA to
- 1:28mine is the Independent Christian Church. And so, I've been
- 1:31trying to figure out who are these people? Tell me about their
- 1:34churches. Get to know their leaders. I've spent a lot of time
- 1:38in Louisville and in other places. And so, today, what you're
- 1:42going to notice is that we're going to hear from people both from the Churches
- 1:45of Christ and from the Independent Christian Church. And we're going
- 1:49to be hearing about churches that are really seeing
- 1:55evangelistic growth through baptismal conversion.
- 1:59And I thought you may be a little bit curious to find out who
- 2:03is the Independent Christian Church. And so,
- 2:07what I wanted to do is to— oh,
- 2:11okay, yeah, great, okay— is to understand that the Independent
- 2:15Christian Church and the Churches of Christ are both formed out
- 2:19of the Restoration Movement. They both also
- 2:24look at Cane Ridge as a seminal event in
- 2:28their history. They both claim Barton W. Stone as
- 2:31one of the people who had great influence in shaping them.
- 2:35And then the events that happened at the Springfield Presbytery
- 2:40in 1804 were events that
- 2:44both groups also claim. Thomas and
- 2:48Alexander Campbell and the Disciples of Christ in the event that Jason just
- 2:52mentioned in 1832 are also part of
- 2:56all of their heritage. And so what
- 2:59we discover is that the Civil War played
- 3:02a role in separating us, and during Reconstruction,
- 3:072 events really began to push these
- 3:112 groups in divergent directions.
- 3:14One was instrumental music, and the other one was cooperation around missionary
- 3:19societies. And so, after Reconstruction,
- 3:23what you noticed was that there were urban
- 3:27churches in the North, rural churches in the South.
- 3:31And by the time the 1906 census came,
- 3:34David Lipscomb was asked, are these 2 still one group
- 3:38or 2? And he said, sadly, they've become 2 different
- 3:42groups. And so, there became the Disciples of Christ and the
- 3:46Churches of Christ. Then what happened was
- 3:50that inside the Disciples of Christ, there became a
- 3:53group of people who didn't like the way that the Disciples
- 3:57were moving. They were downtown churches moving toward liberal progressivism.
- 4:03And they began to form a conference that met every year
- 4:07starting in 1927 to try to keep them on point
- 4:11and to try to maintain an evangelistic fervor
- 4:15inside the Independent Christian Church. And so,
- 4:19they existed inside the Disciples until around the year
- 4:241964.
- 4:27And that's when there was a final break between the Disciples of
- 4:31Christ and the Independent Christian Church. And so, the Independent
- 4:35Christian Church became its own group in the '60s.
- 4:39And what we're noticing today is that these 2
- 4:43groups are discovering each other, finding out the
- 4:47things that they have in common, and understanding that there's
- 4:51things that we can learn from each other. And so, uh,
- 4:55if you wanted to know about the demographics, the Churches of Christ have
- 4:58about 12,000 churches and about 1.4 million
- 5:03people who are a part of their groups, and the
- 5:07Independent Christian Church has about 5,000 churches and
- 5:11roughly the same amount of congregants
- 5:16as well. So, what we are discovering is
- 5:20that these 2 groups have a great deal in common,
- 5:24especially the things that we hold most true: biblical authority,
- 5:29local autonomy, believers' baptism,
- 5:33um, and then weekly observance of the Lord's
- 5:37Supper. And so what I wanted us to understand is
- 5:41that there are groups that are now asking us to think
- 5:45about ways that we can work together, maintaining our distinctives,
- 5:49being who we are, maintaining our congregational autonomy.
- 5:53But how can we learn from each other? How can we encourage each other?
- 5:56How can we support each other? How can we become better because
- 6:00of this partnership that we have? And so I'm
- 6:04excited about this event and the opportunity that it has
- 6:07for us today, uh, to grow and to encourage
- 6:11each other. And if you're part of the Independent Christian Church and you're here
- 6:15today, could you raise your hand just where you are? I thought you might want
- 6:18to meet some of these folks during the day and get to know them
- 6:22and, uh, make sure that we are celebrating what
- 6:26we have in common in Christ. I really appreciated what Jason
- 6:30had to say about what happened in 1932— or 1832,
- 6:35where Alexander Thomas Campbell, Barton W.
- 6:38Stone, everybody began to come back together again.
- 6:42And it was Raccoon John Smith that said we should
- 6:46no longer talk about being an Old Light or a New
- 6:49Light or or any other kind of light. He said
- 6:53we should all believe that Jesus Christ provides all
- 6:57the light that any of us could ever need.
