- 0:00Speaker 1: It is time for the 1110 KFAB Certified Transmission Sports
- 0:03Speaker 1: Brief Husker Buzz with Sean Callahan and Jim Rose. There
- 0:07Speaker 1: aren't too many compelling storylines ahead of the Nebraska-Bowling Green
- 0:10Speaker 1: game other than the Huskers dropped their contract with Tennessee
- 0:13Speaker 1: to play Bowling Green. We had a home-and-home with Tennessee
- 0:16Speaker 1: set up over 10 years ago, but Nebraska didn't want
- 0:19Speaker 1: to play a better team, so in comes Bowling Green.
- 0:21Speaker 1: But there are a lot of compelling issues, Shauna, around
- 0:24Speaker 1: college football. And you mentioned it in your on3. com column
- 0:28Speaker 1: about Western Michigan and how really devastating that loss was.
- 0:34Speaker 1: And what really makes it bad is that three days later,
- 0:36Speaker 1: the NCAA came out with a policy about the clock.
- 0:40Speaker 1: but it really could have been a major, major boost
- 0:43Speaker 1: to the Western Michigan program.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Right. There's not going to be a lot of these
- 0:49Speaker 2: group of five wins versus the power of four, especially
- 0:53Speaker 2: ones that could kind of maybe bolster a playoff resume,
- 0:55Speaker 2: and this was that for the MAAC. I mean, Western
- 0:57Speaker 2: Michigan was the consensus favorite to win the conference in
- 1:02Speaker 2: the MAAC this year. They got nine of the 13
- 1:05Speaker 2: first-place votes to be picked. They won the MAAC last year, so...
- 1:09Speaker 2: You get a win at Michigan like that, all of
- 1:11Speaker 2: a sudden your resume to get into the playoff looks
- 1:13Speaker 2: really good at that point as the one at-large spot. Because,
- 1:17Speaker 2: you know, Boise had that opportunity against Oregon, and it
- 1:20Speaker 2: could still be a team like Boise, but that would
- 1:23Speaker 2: have been millions of dollars for the MAAC conference that
- 1:26Speaker 2: they're not going to get now, maybe.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Yeah, $ 7 million per playoff team. $ 3 million of that
- 1:32Speaker 1: goes to your expenses. $ 4 million in net for Western
- 1:36Speaker 1: Michigan is transformative. So it's really a shame. And look,
- 1:41Speaker 1: Michigan is fine. Michigan will be fine. They they were
- 1:45Speaker 1: scared to death. But this is one of the things
- 1:49Speaker 1: that makes college football puts a lot of pressure, downward
- 1:52Speaker 1: pressure on college football. And that is, you know, we
- 1:56Speaker 1: don't even know whether it's corrupt or not. We don't
- 1:58Speaker 1: know if there's a fix in for the big time
- 2:00Speaker 1: schools and stuff like this. When it happens, it makes
- 2:03Speaker 1: you wonder.
- 2:05Speaker 2: You get these teams that you come in, you pay
- 2:07Speaker 2: all this money, and you want them to play just
- 2:10Speaker 2: dead in the Western, essentially. Come in and take the
- 2:13Speaker 2: check and fall over. When they don't, in a situation
- 2:18Speaker 2: like this where one probably should have won and has
- 2:21Speaker 2: almost history stripped away from them, it's been a lot
- 2:24Speaker 2: of controversy. You watch this week. Michigan, maybe they'll come
- 2:27Speaker 2: out and beat Oklahoma, and I think that will ramp
- 2:31Speaker 2: up even more because the AP pollsters took them out
- 2:34Speaker 2: of the poll, which I think shows you that Michigan's
- 2:37Speaker 2: going to be treated as if that game was a
- 2:38Speaker 2: loss by at least the AP poll. A college football
- 2:41Speaker 2: playoff committee will be a whole different thing, but I
- 2:44Speaker 2: think the pollsters right now have looked at that game
- 2:46Speaker 2: a little bit differently.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Yeah, Michigan has to play a lot better against Oklahoma
- 2:50Speaker 1: to win some of those people back. This is about
- 2:52Speaker 1: Owen Chambliss. This was one of the high-profile transfers into
- 2:55Speaker 1: Nebraska football in the offseason. He was one of the
- 2:58Speaker 1: top pass rushers in the Mountain West Conference. He's had
- 3:01Speaker 1: a hamstring injury. It's slowed him down. What does he
- 3:05Speaker 1: bring to the defense?
- 3:07Speaker 2: Well, I just think he's the green dot, which is
- 3:10Speaker 2: the headset helmet. He's the guy that was supposed to
- 3:13Speaker 2: be wearing that. I just think the communication... Setting the defense,
- 3:17Speaker 2: just the things that a guy that's played for Rob
- 3:19Speaker 2: Ward can bring. He led San Diego State in tackles
- 3:22Speaker 2: last year, so you hope that he's back out there
- 3:26Speaker 2: this week just for that. Heck, maybe that first play
- 3:30Speaker 2: of the game, for example, just getting set up, getting
- 3:32Speaker 2: lined up. Maybe communication's a little better where Jeremiah Charles
- 3:36Speaker 2: plays the correct defense. He played zone instead of man,
- 3:39Speaker 2: which led to that opening 67-yard play for those guys
- 3:45Speaker 2: last week. So, yeah, I think there's a lot that
- 3:47Speaker 2: he could potentially bring, and I know he has practice
- 3:49Speaker 2: this week, so we'll see if he'll play.
- 3:50Speaker 1: All right. That's KFB Esker, InfoStrongman, Sean Callahan. Remember, the
