- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update. I'm Zach Power.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Energy Minister Lloyd Parrott says it's his belief that the
- 0:09Speaker 1: Betanor project will get the green light and that Equinor's
- 0:12Speaker 1: final investment decision will be approved. The company posits plans
- 0:16Speaker 1: for deep-sea oil development in 2023 to find a more
- 0:19Speaker 1: economic way forward. Since then, British partner BP has pulled
- 0:23Speaker 1: out of the $ 14 billion project, leaving Equinor as the
- 0:27Speaker 1: sole owner. A final decision on the project is expected
- 0:30Speaker 1: sometime early next year, but Minister Parrott, who is back
- 0:33Speaker 1: from an oil show in Norway, believes that it will
- 0:36Speaker 1: go ahead.
- 0:38Speaker 2: It is my honest belief that the Beta Nord project
- 0:41Speaker 2: will move ahead 100%.
- 0:44Speaker 1: The province's offshore oil regulator has issued two calls for
- 0:47Speaker 1: nominations for parcels of land off eastern Newfoundland, including the
- 0:50Speaker 1: Jeanne d'Arc region, and off Labrador. After a review of
- 0:54Speaker 1: submissions received from the calls for nominations, the regulator will
- 0:57Speaker 1: determine whether it will proceed with the bidding process. Calls
- 1:01Speaker 1: for bids would be announced in early 2027 and close
- 1:05Speaker 1: in November of 2027, with licenses awarded to successful bidders
- 1:09Speaker 1: in early 2028. A new political survey conducted by La
- 1:13Speaker 1: Presse shows that the governing coalition Avenir Quebec, or the CAAC,
- 1:18Speaker 1: which had been languishing in the polls, has surged in
- 1:21Speaker 1: popularity in a virtual tie with the Parti de l' Équipe
- 1:24Speaker 1: or the BQ. Ottawa bureau chief for La Presse, Jolene Bellavance,
- 1:29Speaker 1: says that it's shocking as a result just one day
- 1:32Speaker 1: into the provincial election in Quebec. He says that the
- 1:35Speaker 1: numbers show that the CAC are rising from the dead.
- 1:38Speaker 2: The numbers were pretty gloom and doom for the CAC
- 1:42Speaker 2: in Quebec, and now... We did have a survey, about 1,000 people,
- 1:47Speaker 2: that shows that it's a neck-and-neck race now between the
- 1:51Speaker 2: Parti Québécois and the Coalition Avenir Québec. The latest numbers
- 1:55Speaker 2: show that the Parti Québécois is still leading with 28%,
- 1:58Speaker 2: and the Coalition Avenir Québec is at 27%, and the
- 2:02Speaker 2: Liberal Party at 20%. For the CAC, that's a jump
- 2:05Speaker 2: of 7 points in two weeks.
- 2:08Speaker 1: The Nature Conservancy of Canada has established a new 1,600-hectare
- 2:12Speaker 1: nature reserve, at Beothuk Lake. The organization made the announcement
- 2:16Speaker 1: during an event at Bowering Park in St. John's yesterday.
- 2:19Speaker 1: The reserve has been established through tech resources in the
- 2:22Speaker 1: federal government. It covers both sides of the Exploit River
- 2:25Speaker 1: to the southwest of Millertown and extends along the west
- 2:29Speaker 1: as well as the south shore of Beothuk Lake. The
- 2:32Speaker 1: protected area includes Atlantic salmon habitat, porial forest, wetlands, and
- 2:36Speaker 1: water resources. Millertown Mayor Fiona Humber says that she's very
- 2:40Speaker 1: excited about the area, but does acknowledge that residents have
- 2:43Speaker 1: to do their part and consultation sessions are still to come.
- 2:49Speaker 3: They're just mostly wondering what's going on with anything to
- 2:54Speaker 3: do with Beothuk culture in the area. There's a lot
- 2:57Speaker 3: of people that care a lot about it and they
- 2:58Speaker 3: want to know what's happening. And they want to know
- 3:00Speaker 3: if their everyday activities are going to be impacted, which
- 3:04Speaker 3: we're happy to say that it should not be impacted
- 3:07Speaker 3: by this project at all, except in positive ways, of course.
- 3:10Speaker 1: That's your news. I'm Zach Power.
