- 0:00Let's go to the list. It's a dwindling list.
- 0:02You know, I haven't even looked at what's on
- 0:04that previous list. I miss that list. I don't
- 0:07know the last - Have you just gotten rid of everything
- 0:09because it's all 70 years old at this point?
- 0:10No, it still exists as a list out there. I just
- 0:13started a new list. I guess I was sick of looking
- 0:16at that list. It brought too much anxiety to
- 0:18look at the same things you were looking at.
- 0:20It did. It was growing too many categories. I
- 0:23could go back to the other one, but they're all
- 0:24old articles at this point. We got zebra mussel
- 0:27adjacent, bunkers, whale sad, whales and language,
- 0:31extinction adjacent, 2019 adjacent. Does it happen
- 0:34in 2018 or 2020? I need to hear this. No, it's
- 0:38hard to say. Then we got AI adjacent. Nope, 2018
- 0:42adjacent. Do you want to do that? It's 2019.
- 0:44Have to. We're all gonna be amazed here what
- 0:47comes up because I don't know what this means.
- 0:50From the smithsonianmag .com, Jason Daily, March
- 0:5420, 2019. We always gotta remember, how was this
- 0:57hiding giants? Yes. How is it? It might be about
- 1:01that. We don't know because I'm pretty sure I
- 1:03said 2019 adjacent because that's when it's from
- 1:05and it has nothing to fucking do with the article
- 1:07itself, which is named. Some people's brains
- 1:10can sense Earth's magnetic field, but no, it
- 1:14doesn't mean we have magnetoreception superpowers.
- 1:19Yeah, a lot of birds have that. We do not. Are
- 1:21you sure? Maybe this article will tell us. No,
- 1:24it says we don't. Well, this is 2019. So who
- 1:26knows how we title episodes. It's adjacent. It's
- 1:29not. It's 2019. It's 2018. Or 2020. Currently,
- 1:36scientists are still trying to figure out just
- 1:38how magnetoreception works in animals. Magnetoreception.
- 1:44Magnetoreception. Like the... Or magnetoreception.
- 1:47Like the transformer or... Megatron. Magnetore,
- 1:51right? Sure. Like Wolverine. The transformer
- 1:54magnetore. The guy in the wheelchair, right?
- 1:56Professor X? I think you're thinking of Magneto.
- 2:00Yeah, that guy. He was not in a wheelchair. Who's
- 2:03the guy in the wheelchair? Professor X. Oh, who's
- 2:07Magneto? No, I'm definitely thinking of Professor
- 2:09X. Okay. Me? Now I lost my fucking place. Magneto
- 2:15Reception or Magnetoreception. Yeah, Magneto
- 2:17Reception, like the guy in, what is it called?
- 2:20X -Men. works in animals. Eric Hand in Science
- 2:25reports that most of what we know about magnetosense
- 2:29comes from behavioral studies of animals which
- 2:34change the way they orient themselves or navigate
- 2:37in the magnetic field is manipulated. Dogs will
- 2:41orient themselves along the north -south axis
- 2:44of Earth's magnetic field when they poop. What?
- 2:47Is this for real? Oh yeah, there's a ton of animals
- 2:50that you don't expect that do that. Horses and
- 2:52cows too tend to align themselves north -south.
- 2:55That... how do you know that? who studied this
- 2:58i watched a show on it and it was talking about
- 3:01like they put these cattle into these corrals
- 3:04and they could change the magnetic direction
- 3:06within it and every cow they put in it would
- 3:09change the direction based on what looked like
- 3:12north that's fucked up is that how magneto gets
- 3:14his name in the x -men no it's because he can
- 3:17manipulate metal okay it's not because it's not
- 3:19because he can know which way is north by looking
- 3:22at it Or the way he poops. Is this a north -facing
- 3:31toilet? There's so many implications in this
- 3:33article. It doesn't matter because I can manipulate
- 3:35it. My brain is just an overdrive after the zombies.
- 3:39There's so many implications to life and the
- 3:43soul here. Finding out just how the magnetic
- 3:46field sense works on a biological level has been
- 3:49more of a challenge. There are currently two
- 3:52major hypotheses in 2019. One involves... Cryptochromes
- 3:57specialized proteins in the retina Chelsea one
- 4:00story that you're probably definitely missing
- 4:02at this point is Birds have this and that's how
- 4:05they fly in south for the winter. Yeah, but jokes
- 4:08on you because they're not fucking real Yeah,
- 4:10that somehow communicate magnetic information
- 4:14to the brain. The other hypothesis is that microscopic
- 4:19particles of the mineral magnetite sit on certain
- 4:22receptor cells of the ear or behind the nose
- 4:25and work as biological compasses. George Dvorsky
- 4:29at Gizmodo reports that lead researchers in the
- 4:34new study, Joseph Kersbink, a geophysicist from
- 4:37Caltech who has been investigating magnetic fields
- 4:40and magno -reception for decades decided to bypass
- 4:45questions about how the sense might work and
- 4:48focus on whether there were signs of magno -reception
- 4:50in the brain at all. Quote, our approach was
- 4:54to focus on brave wave activity alone and quote
- 4:57Kershvich tells Dvorsky. These are very hard
- 5:00names to read all at once by the way. Quote,
- 5:02If the brain is not responding to the magnetic
- 5:05field, then there is no way that the magnetic
- 5:07field can influence someone's behavior. The brain
- 5:11must first perceive something in order to act
- 5:13on it, obviously. There is no such thing as extrasensory
- 5:17perception." This is what this is based on. They
- 5:21think that the brain is not receiving signals.
- 5:23They think it's ESP, like men who stare at goats,
- 5:26like Uri Geller. Yeah, but the brain needs inputs
- 5:29to be able to make inputs is basically what they're
- 5:32saying. Yeah, that seems obvious. To study the
- 5:35brain waves, the team constructed an elaborate
- 5:38chamber designed to block all outside magnetic
- 5:42activity, electrical impulses, and sound. Electrical
- 5:45coils inside the chamber produced a magnetic
- 5:48field that could be manipulated by researchers.
- 5:50For the experiment, the team studied 34 individuals
- 5:54who wore a special device that monitored their
- 5:56brain waves. The subjects each sat in total darkness
- 5:59for an hour as researchers rotated the artificial
- 6:03magnetic field around them, looking for signs
- 6:05that the brain detected the movements. I'm sorry,
- 6:08I'm giggling because I'm just picture them like
- 6:10how are they studying this like by the direction
- 6:13in which they're pooping or they're not saying
- 6:16they're just in the dark Chelsea so far it's
- 6:19only been brought up with dogs that it has to
- 6:21do with pooping yeah i think it might it's been
- 6:24brought up only once that these other species
- 6:26might not have to do with pooping but that's
- 6:30the only thing they've given us so far is pooping
- 6:34they've not given us any so what else am i supposed
- 6:37to suppose by this that is not pooping okay anyhow
- 6:42pooping aside the experimenters recorded dips
- 6:45in the amplitude of alpha brain waves in a third
- 6:49of the participants. The dips were most pronounced
- 6:53with a 25 % change in amplitude when they make
- 6:56this all has nothing to do with pooping and it's
- 6:59just like what does it mean? It's all downhill
- 7:02since they informed you of pooping. I know! Magnetic
- 7:06field in front of the subject was pointed north
- 7:09and swung from the northeast to northwest in
- 7:11a counterwise motion. But what does it mean?
- 7:14Just like tell me. I would actually wonder. I
- 7:18don't think it's going to happen in this article,
- 7:19but I would wonder if that whole life. Some people
- 7:22have a good sense of direction and some people
- 7:24do not. And I would wonder if like being able
- 7:26to have some of this in mind while you're. traveling
- 7:30but they don't even know what it is like we don't
- 7:33even know like obviously pooping for us is which
- 7:36direction the toilet is pointing well for some
- 7:39of us exactly for the sophisticated bunch of
- 7:45us for the people pooping you know as they please
- 7:48i don't know maybe they're more in tune with
- 7:51nature maybe those are the people that have the
- 7:53answer anyhow i'm pretty sure i just skipped
- 7:55a whole lot it would be an interesting study
- 7:57to see the class level of different people and
- 8:00which direction their toilets generally face.
- 8:03I'd love to see if it had anything to do with
- 8:05class level and whether or not they were more
- 8:06north -facing. But then with that you would have
- 8:08to study like people who are pooping in the woods
- 8:10and what direction they generally face. Maybe
- 8:13they have a lot in common. I don't think they're
- 8:14rich people Chelsea. I don't think they're rich
- 8:16people. No they're not rich people but we could
- 8:18see a correlation between the direction they're
- 8:21pooping and the rich people toilets direction.
- 8:23That's fair. This mini's going on enough and
- 8:26I'm just not getting satisfied by this article.
- 8:29at all, and it is long. It's been downhill since
- 8:32the poop. Yeah, it's true. I'm just not interested
- 8:34because the direction people are pooping has
- 8:37not come up again. Oh, no. Well, not no. It's
- 8:41Wednesday. It's a tough day to get through, for
- 8:44me at least, on this Sunday night. Don't worry
- 8:47about it. You guys got 48 hours. Think about
- 8:50it. The next time you poop, which hopefully happens
- 8:52in the next 48 hours, or you got problems, which
- 8:55way are you facing? You could technically face
- 8:57the other direction. Then maybe let us know,
- 9:01we might do a study on it, I don't know. Anyhow,
- 9:05bye.
