- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Wired to Hunt's rut Fresh Radio, bringing you
- 0:04Speaker 1: the latest reports from the Whitetail Woods, presented by First Light,

- 0:13Speaker 1: First Light Go farther, stay longer, and now your hosts
- 0:18Speaker 1: Casey Smith and Tyler Jones.
- 0:21Speaker 2: This is rutfresh Radio. I'm your host, Casey Smith, and
- 0:24Speaker 2: guess what.
- 0:25Speaker 3: It's actually been a tough week in the Whitetail Woods,
- 0:28Speaker 3: but the looming effects of a potential coal front has
- 0:31Speaker 3: everybody on their toes.
- 0:33Speaker 2: This is rout Fresh. Let's go what's happening to everybody?
- 0:47Speaker 2: This is rutfresh, brought to you by First La Gear. Casey,
- 0:52Speaker 2: you've been doing some hunt lately? I have not. I
- 0:54Speaker 2: am like I am just chomping at the bit to
- 0:56Speaker 2: get out there. Yeah, I've been doing quite a bit
- 0:59Speaker 2: of elk hunting.
- 1:00Speaker 3: If you want to hear more about that, go check
- 1:02Speaker 3: out the Element podcast also dropped today. We'll have a
- 1:06Speaker 3: episode that gives a lot of details from that hunt,
- 1:08Speaker 3: because it was awesome. They were fired up and going
- 1:11Speaker 3: crazy because September is the l crut. However, September not
- 1:15Speaker 3: so much the whitetail rut. But bucks are killable if
- 1:19Speaker 3: you can get them on a pattern and you made
- 1:23Speaker 3: a remarkable to go off air. How that's a little
- 1:25Speaker 3: bit tough right now because a lot of people have
- 1:27Speaker 3: killed their patterned buck already in the month of September,
- 1:30Speaker 3: and now we're getting into the place where maybe you're
- 1:34Speaker 3: trying to plan B or planning C. You're trying to
- 1:36Speaker 3: find something new, and it gets a little tougher, especially
- 1:39Speaker 3: because animals are interesting. They are all just a little different,
- 1:45Speaker 3: just like humans. Like most humans are pretty predictable. We're
- 1:48Speaker 3: gonna eat something for breakfast, something for lunch, something for dinner.
- 1:51Speaker 3: But outside of that, you might have a Michael who
- 1:54Speaker 3: wants to go to Taco Bell or me and you
- 1:56Speaker 3: that want something kind of nice and cooked at home.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Right So that to say, right now, it's a little
- 2:02Speaker 3: bit tough because a lot of deer are doing different stuff.
- 2:04Speaker 3: And that's kind of what it sounds like kind of
- 2:06Speaker 3: across the country too. The guys are kind of remarking
- 2:09Speaker 3: that it's like pretty standard procedure out there, except for
- 2:14Speaker 3: the fact that nobody knows for sure what that procedure is.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Well, I think a lot of it is that there's
- 2:21Speaker 2: a lot of nocturnal movements still right now, and I
- 2:23Speaker 2: think that those just kind of stagnant tempts, even if
- 2:25Speaker 2: they're not super hot, are still just not like inspiring
- 2:29Speaker 2: deer to move earlier. And it seems like with a
- 2:32Speaker 2: guess that that's kind of a thing for sure. But
- 2:35Speaker 2: you know, also, you know, you still have this pattern
- 2:40Speaker 2: pattern ability thing going on, and you guys will probably
- 2:43Speaker 2: hear like some of this going on, I'm sure from
- 2:47Speaker 2: a lot of the places across the country in the
- 2:48Speaker 2: next week or so, where if you do like your
- 2:52Speaker 2: season may just now be opening up, or it may
- 2:55Speaker 2: open up October one or something like that, So sometime
- 2:57Speaker 2: recently or within the next week, and if you have
- 3:01Speaker 2: something going your way on trail camera, then it's probably
- 3:04Speaker 2: gonna still go your way. You know. A cold front
- 3:07Speaker 2: would be great to inspire them to get up on
- 3:09Speaker 2: their feet, but it also could mess up some guy
- 3:11Speaker 2: who's got a pattern, you know, going right now. And
- 3:14Speaker 2: so if that's the guy and he's got a cold
- 3:17Speaker 2: front looming, he needs to go get out in the
- 3:19Speaker 2: woods right now and kill it. Dear for something changes,
- 3:21Speaker 2: you know, So it's also a good time of year
- 3:24Speaker 2: or two.
- 3:24Speaker 3: And this is kind of where the way I think
- 3:27Speaker 3: of things sometimes it doesn't align with everybody else. But
- 3:31Speaker 3: if you got deer that are moving pretty nocturnal, it's
- 3:33Speaker 3: a great time to hunt mornings and get into bedding.
- 3:36Speaker 4: You know.
- 3:36Speaker 3: It's like kind of a turn and burn type thing,
- 3:39Speaker 3: where like if you don't kill them, you might bust
- 3:41Speaker 3: it out. But like if you're you know, getting deer
- 3:44Speaker 3: on trail camera that are at night on a food source,
- 3:46Speaker 3: if you know a good idea about where they're bedding,
- 3:48Speaker 3: you can go on a morning, you know, get in
- 3:50Speaker 3: there real early and be in the right spot. You know,
- 3:52Speaker 3: it makes me think about believe it was October third
- 3:56Speaker 3: of the year twenty twenty one, you did that exact
- 3:59Speaker 3: thing South Dakota. We knew fourth it was it was
- 4:04Speaker 3: Eric's birthday. That's right, Yeah, that's right, birthday bug from Eric.
- 4:07Speaker 3: So we went then went and boughtym a twinkie at
- 4:10Speaker 3: the gas station.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Every hostess we could find it.
- 4:15Speaker 3: But yeah, so like it's the thing that works early
- 4:18Speaker 3: now that is you know, kind of a week out still,
- 4:21Speaker 3: but the deer pretty much going to be doing that
- 4:23Speaker 3: same thing until they shift to kind of that pre
- 4:25Speaker 3: rut stage, which we're all antsy about.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Right telling you, you know, and that's something that another
- 4:30Speaker 2: thing to consider, you know, if that that was a
- 4:32Speaker 2: public land deer, right, if I was, if I had
- 4:34Speaker 2: a place that I needed to play more conservative than
- 4:37Speaker 2: which I have a few you know, I'm not going
- 4:39Speaker 2: to go probably and do that unless I see something
- 4:41Speaker 2: change so or you know, even I can't remember in
- 4:45Speaker 2: twenty twenty when I killed a deer on a scrape
- 4:47Speaker 2: in Illinois, a big buck, and I played that pretty
- 4:50Speaker 2: conservative too, because we knew that that scrape had been
- 4:53Speaker 2: producing all summer, right, and so we knew what was
- 4:56Speaker 2: going to happen. We just needed we needed something to
- 4:59Speaker 2: really solidify the fact that there was gonna be a
- 5:03Speaker 2: good chance of daylight movement. And that was a big
- 5:06Speaker 2: cold front. And and instead I almost went a week early.
- 5:09Speaker 2: And if i'd have gone that that buck that I
- 5:11Speaker 2: killed showed up that on that cold front the week prior.
- 5:14Speaker 2: It just was he was in the in the dark.
- 5:16Speaker 2: So it ended up being good. I talked to some
- 5:19Speaker 2: people up there that were more from the area and
- 5:21Speaker 2: they were like, you should wait, I think because things
- 5:24Speaker 2: are still really just right at right at dark pretty
- 5:27Speaker 2: much if they're coming out in daylight. So it went doubt.
- 5:30Speaker 3: That brings up a little something we were actually fixing
- 5:32Speaker 3: to get to go finally do some why too, I'm
- 5:36Speaker 3: gonna tell you what state, because you're gonna creep us
- 5:38Speaker 3: out a little bit, and I don't want you to
- 5:39Speaker 3: come over finding us.
- 5:40Speaker 2: I know I pay for some of the people from
- 5:43Speaker 2: Maine to figure out our spots.
- 5:45Speaker 3: So but the place that we're going, we got some
- 5:48Speaker 3: permission on some private ground that is like a lot
- 5:52Speaker 3: of ag fields, and I don't know how much ground
- 5:57Speaker 3: we're gonna have. If that's not agg fields, you know,
- 5:58Speaker 3: it's gonna be like kind of like tree rose fence
- 6:00Speaker 3: rose in the fields, so a lot of deer around.
- 6:04Speaker 3: But that makes mornings really tough. And if there is cover,
- 6:09Speaker 3: we are liable to have to go through the agg
- 6:10Speaker 3: fields to get to it. So there's not a lot
- 6:12Speaker 3: of acreage to it. So the mornings or evenings thing.
- 6:15Speaker 3: It's going to have to be something to kind of
- 6:18Speaker 3: decide on this, Tyler, how do you feel about it?
- 6:20Speaker 3: Are you do you feel like because we're gonna do
- 6:22Speaker 3: this in about three days because we don't have a
- 6:26Speaker 3: lot of time to hunt this place. Is it worth
- 6:30Speaker 3: going in and boogering stuff or is it worth just
- 6:33Speaker 3: trying to have three good evening hunts where you don't
- 6:36Speaker 3: have deer that are all scooped up?
- 6:38Speaker 2: Man? I think I think you know, it's going to
- 6:42Speaker 2: be probably worth being a little bit conservative until the
- 6:47Speaker 2: last morning. Maybe you know, they're just kind of seeing
- 6:50Speaker 2: at least the first day or two. What what you
- 6:53Speaker 2: what you at least assume is going on. And the
- 6:57Speaker 2: issue with this and this is like a this is
- 6:59Speaker 2: a three through thing across the US probably, but ag
- 7:04Speaker 2: is produced by tractors which have to enter that ag
- 7:07Speaker 2: field through a road system at some point, right, so
- 7:10Speaker 2: you end up where you enter properties is the ag
- 7:15Speaker 2: and the betting is further back in right yep most
- 7:18Speaker 2: of the time. So that's why it's hard, because you
- 7:21Speaker 2: can't just you know, come in from the backside a
- 7:24Speaker 2: lot of times because if you could, then they would
- 7:26Speaker 2: plant that too or whatever, you know, and I feel
- 7:28Speaker 2: like we won't be walking.
- 7:29Speaker 3: But if you had a little e bike or something,
- 7:30Speaker 3: it might help that, you know, you can zoom back
- 7:32Speaker 3: there and just have a little bit different impact. Do
- 7:36Speaker 3: you think that this is something I actually don't know
- 7:38Speaker 3: the answer to. But deer seem to enter ag fields
- 7:45Speaker 3: at specific places, like they this is the spot that
- 7:48Speaker 3: the deer come in. They don't just kind of spider
- 7:50Speaker 3: web in. But I almost feel like in the morning
- 7:53Speaker 3: sometimes they kind of like spider web out, like they
- 7:55Speaker 3: kind of get caught out there and they're like, oh,
- 7:56Speaker 3: jump the fence.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, right, sure, I feel like that too.
- 7:59Speaker 3: It's makes it a little tougher to try to pattern
- 8:03Speaker 3: deer because I was thinking, I was like, you know,
- 8:05Speaker 3: we could pull up. One way we could use our
- 8:07Speaker 3: mornings is glass and feel and figure out where they're
- 8:10Speaker 3: leaving the fields and then know you can go set
- 8:11Speaker 3: up there.
- 8:12Speaker 2: But a buck might do a loop. They don't use.
- 8:14Speaker 3: They don't actually do a lot of linear things. You know,
- 8:17Speaker 3: a lot of times they're looping to go who knows.
- 8:20Speaker 2: What fee the next month or whatever. Yeah.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Yeah, So I don't know, it'll be interested to see
- 8:28Speaker 3: because I haven't ever hunted this situation too much.
- 8:30Speaker 2: There's usually always like an option for.
- 8:32Speaker 3: The morning, and maybe there will be I don't know,
- 8:34Speaker 3: but it's gonna take some scouting stuff figure out well.
- 8:36Speaker 2: And I think that if there is an option it's
- 8:38Speaker 2: probably going to take a long walk and therefore early mornings.
- 8:43Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, I've been doing a lot of long walking
- 8:46Speaker 3: and uh, I don't really want any more.
- 8:50Speaker 2: The evening. It's kind of tired.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Man.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Well, we do have a diverse group this week from
- 8:58Speaker 3: around the country to talk about what's going on the
- 9:01Speaker 3: White Tail Woods. It's kind of weird too, because a
- 9:04Speaker 3: lot of times things are different because the country is
- 9:07Speaker 3: so big and White tra are so different. But this
- 9:09Speaker 3: is like a really specific time of year where it's
- 9:12Speaker 3: like just that calm before the big game type thing
- 9:17Speaker 3: where everybody's just like, all right, it's coming, you know,
- 9:19Speaker 3: or whatever.
- 9:20Speaker 2: So who are we talking to today? Yeah, So I
- 9:22Speaker 2: try always to spread these things out when we you know,
- 9:25Speaker 2: quote unquote book guests. But I want to make sure
- 9:28Speaker 2: we're getting some south, some north, some east and west
- 9:30Speaker 2: that kind of thing as much as possible. And it's
- 9:32Speaker 2: hard depending on what sasars are open. But Arkansas opened
- 9:35Speaker 2: up recently, so our buddy Nick Gonzalez has been up
- 9:38Speaker 2: there hanging out with the mosquitoes and trying not to
- 9:40Speaker 2: get carried off in Arkansas. We're also going to talk
- 9:43Speaker 2: to cam Baits up in Wisconsin. Cam's a super cool dude,
- 9:48Speaker 2: very knowledgeable, smart individual that has been hunting the Wisconsin area.
- 9:52Speaker 2: And that's a state I've never hunted. Actually I've scouted it,
- 9:56Speaker 2: but I've never hunted it. I've seen it. That's what
- 10:01Speaker 2: you do. And then Jason Read from timber Ninja out
- 10:05Speaker 2: North Carolina. He's, you know, the speaking of walking, he's
- 10:09Speaker 2: the master walker. He loves walking very far into Christopher
- 10:13Speaker 2: just be walking all the time. He's out there walking
- 10:17Speaker 2: around in North Carolina hills. And then Garrett Addison from Minnesota.
- 10:23Speaker 2: He's been doing a much different game where you don't
- 10:26Speaker 2: walk very far because you hunt right next to the
- 10:28Speaker 2: driveway in the urban areas. That's cool, Yeah, it's it's
- 10:32Speaker 2: it is a diverse group and there's a lot of
- 10:34Speaker 2: different things going on. You know, a lot of you
- 10:37Speaker 2: people have been sending us messages about states and places
- 10:40Speaker 2: you know, you'd like to have. Unfortunately, there's about four
- 10:44Speaker 2: guests every week, and uh, there's you know what forty
- 10:48Speaker 2: something states that have white tail in them, and we're
- 10:51Speaker 2: gonna cover them as much as possible. Uh, but you know,
- 10:54Speaker 2: south central, western eastern Illinois might not make it. You know,
- 10:59Speaker 2: you know, no, I mean so especially not right now
- 11:02Speaker 2: because there's not a season open days, right. Illinois will
- 11:04Speaker 2: make it, you know, during the season, I'm sure, but
- 11:06Speaker 2: like your particular area, I'd like to help you out
- 11:10Speaker 2: and get that done. But it's it's enough for us
- 11:12Speaker 2: to get the states all lined out as much as possible.
- 11:15Speaker 2: So we're trying. We're trying, guys, and I appreciate your
- 11:18Speaker 2: support guys listening to this thing. I know Mark appreciates
- 11:21Speaker 2: it as well, and we'll try to have him back
- 11:23Speaker 2: on one of these days when he gets done trout
- 11:24Speaker 2: fishing and all that kind of stuff. So anyway, let's
- 11:28Speaker 2: get to those guys all right on the phone. Now,
- 11:30Speaker 2: I've got Nick Gonzalez. He's an Element correspondent. He's been
- 11:34Speaker 2: out in Arkansas. What's going on, Nick, Oh?
- 11:37Speaker 4: Not much.
- 11:38Speaker 5: About to get some Chick fil.
- 11:39Speaker 2: A, man, it's about to be, you know, a pleasurable
- 11:44Speaker 2: fast food experience, spicy deluxe time man, for sure. Cool. Well,
- 11:50Speaker 2: so you've been in Arkansas doing some hunting. You're hunting
- 11:53Speaker 2: publicly in I was how'd that go?
- 12:00Speaker 6: Say?
- 12:00Speaker 5: The least? I've had better hunts?
- 12:02Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I didn't didn't see a whole lot
- 12:06Speaker 7: of deer action on this trip. Saw a few dough
- 12:11Speaker 7: lots of mosquitoes, and a lot of snakes.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Oh snake, all our bodies out there, What was what
- 12:17Speaker 3: was the tactic that you were so a little background here.
- 12:20Speaker 3: You you went on a hunt early last year Tarkansas
- 12:23Speaker 3: and had a good hunt, So I'm assuming you were
- 12:25Speaker 3: kind of just going off of some of the previous
- 12:27Speaker 3: knowledge there. What was the tactic that you were going
- 12:29Speaker 3: in there on?
- 12:31Speaker 7: Yeah, so last year we were kind of hunting the food.
- 12:37Speaker 7: We also had some water, so last year was a
- 12:39Speaker 7: real dry year, and the location that we hunted last
- 12:42Speaker 7: year was one of the only spots in the area
- 12:45Speaker 7: that had really good water, which is what they were patterning.
- 12:50Speaker 7: This year, we weren't able to get to that same
- 12:52Speaker 7: spot just too due to a couple of different circumstances,
- 12:56Speaker 7: so we had to improvise out new areas. But essentially
- 13:00Speaker 7: we were hunting the same thing, just bead to food,
- 13:03Speaker 7: mostly acrons. Found some per simmons while we were out
- 13:07Speaker 7: there as well, so that's kind of what.
- 13:09Speaker 5: We were after.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Is that what those snakes were eating per simmons?
- 13:12Speaker 7: Uh No, the only thing that's all eating. Those actually
- 13:15Speaker 7: were coyotes.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Oh, they they see loves coyotes, man, man, k let
- 13:20Speaker 2: me tell you something. I have a lot of encounters
- 13:22Speaker 2: with coyotes these days.
- 13:24Speaker 3: It seems they intend to really like to mess up
- 13:26Speaker 3: my hunts, which I hope that didn't happen for you.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Yeah, So what kind of acorns? Were they? Red oaks
- 13:33Speaker 2: or white oaks?
- 13:36Speaker 5: I couldn't tell you, to be honest with you. I
- 13:39Speaker 5: need to do some more research.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Were they small and in swampy areas?
- 13:44Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 13:44Speaker 5: They were small and they're real green.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, so probably like swamp or water oaks as
- 13:49Speaker 2: they call them, and willow oaks I would assume. But uh,
- 13:53Speaker 2: those things we found they they tend to work later
- 13:55Speaker 2: in the season two because they got so much tannin
- 13:58Speaker 2: in them. But any anyway, so you know you have
- 14:01Speaker 2: a rough hint. But you did see some deer, right,
- 14:04Speaker 2: I did?
- 14:04Speaker 7: Yeah, just a few doze and they were both times,
- 14:10Speaker 7: are both sets that I saw them. They were hitting
- 14:13Speaker 7: the agrons just coming out of just coming out of
- 14:16Speaker 7: their bedding in the evening.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Where were they betting in being Yeah, just like super
- 14:22Speaker 2: thick honeysuckle and stuff like that or what was it?
- 14:25Speaker 7: Yeah, basically just yeah, thick areas like that. Yeah, it's
- 14:30Speaker 7: all swamp land out there's everything. You know, it's kind
- 14:33Speaker 7: of hard to find the betting because everything looks the same.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Cover Sure enough, Man, did you find any rubs yet
- 14:40Speaker 2: while you were out there?
- 14:41Speaker 7: I didn't find many at all. Actually I saw one
- 14:46Speaker 7: on a really small tree, but.
- 14:47Speaker 4: That was it.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Not like a little wispy to just give you not
- 14:51Speaker 2: much confidence. So you know, if you were if you
- 14:57Speaker 2: were thinking about like this next week based off any
- 15:00Speaker 2: you know, weather patterns or any variability that you can
- 15:03Speaker 2: think of, would you still hunt the same pattern maybe
- 15:07Speaker 2: a different area, But would you still hunt deer moving
- 15:10Speaker 2: from betting into the acorns?
- 15:13Speaker 7: Yeah, for sure. I mean I think that's probably your
- 15:15Speaker 7: best bet at this point. Just I think that's the
- 15:18Speaker 7: only thing that they're moving for right now.
- 15:21Speaker 2: So i'd be moving from them cotton mouths. So, if
- 15:26Speaker 2: you had.
- 15:26Speaker 3: To predict the buck movement over the next week and
- 15:30Speaker 3: give it a rating of one to ten, what are
- 15:32Speaker 3: you going to call it for Arkansas?
- 15:36Speaker 7: Honestly, probably like a four, just because the weather is
- 15:40Speaker 7: going to be about the same. It's still pretty warm,
- 15:42Speaker 7: I think maybe mid to low sixties in the mornings
- 15:44Speaker 7: and then mid eighties or so in the during the day,
- 15:47Speaker 7: so I don't expect it to be much better than
- 15:50Speaker 7: it was this week.
- 15:51Speaker 2: M Yeah, okay, well, man, I hope that it goes
- 15:56Speaker 2: better for you next time you go up there, man.
- 15:58Speaker 2: And I hope your Chick fil A is super tasty
- 16:00Speaker 2: and as they say, I hope it's their pleasure, you
- 16:04Speaker 2: know what I mean that they save you that the
- 16:06Speaker 2: chick Fila.
- 16:07Speaker 5: They're pretty consistent, so I'm sure they are.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Chick Fish for board is pretty good on this one.
- 16:14Speaker 5: Man.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Yeah, well, thanks for hopping on and doing that for us. Man.
- 16:18Speaker 2: And uh yeah, we'll be talking to you soon.
- 16:20Speaker 5: All right, sounds good.
- 16:21Speaker 7: Appreciate you guys.
- 16:23Speaker 2: On the phone. I've got cam Baits. He's been out
- 16:25Speaker 2: in Wisconsin hunting. What's going on camp?
- 16:28Speaker 6: Oh Man, I'm honestly, I'm waiting for cold weather to
- 16:32Speaker 6: roll in. But that's not too big of an issue. Yeah,
- 16:35Speaker 6: I hunted the entire opening weekend, so Saturday Sunday learned
- 16:43Speaker 6: a lot actually, But yeah, I mean, I'm waiting for
- 16:46Speaker 6: some of the colder weather to roll in to really
- 16:49Speaker 6: see some more deer movement in the in the morning
- 16:51Speaker 6: hours and the evening hours than normal.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's been good. Cool. Yeah, So I got
- 16:59Speaker 2: I got a quot for you. Then, uh, Saturday, I
- 17:02Speaker 2: coach the pee wee football game and it was ninety six.
- 17:05Speaker 2: What's cold for you in Wisconsin? Cool? Oh?
- 17:09Speaker 5: Man.
- 17:09Speaker 6: The temperatures I want to see in the morning, I
- 17:12Speaker 6: want to see in the thirties to forties.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Yeah, in the current months we're at. Yeah. Yeah.
- 17:20Speaker 6: Opening day though, I think it was morning temps were
- 17:23Speaker 6: fifty five and then afternoon temps were seventy two and sunny.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Man. I think there's a song about that, isn't there.
- 17:32Speaker 3: Actually, So you know, this might be a little bit
- 17:37Speaker 3: like basic level, but I think it's probably a good
- 17:40Speaker 3: idea to talk about.
- 17:41Speaker 2: What do those cold tents do for you?
- 17:45Speaker 6: They get the they get the deer moving sooner. When
- 17:49Speaker 6: it's a little bit warmer out, the deer tend to
- 17:51Speaker 6: not hunker, They just bed longer, and so it pushes
- 17:54Speaker 6: out those moving times from where you'd want to see
- 17:56Speaker 6: at the six am, seven am, they push out to or.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Eight, nine, ten am.
- 18:02Speaker 6: So and so it doesn't really allow you to well,
- 18:04Speaker 6: it doesn't allow you to prep for the day.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Well m M, gotcha.
- 18:09Speaker 3: So do you also, you know, the tempts you listed
- 18:12Speaker 3: there were looking at kind of like first frost dates
- 18:14Speaker 3: and stuff.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Does the the.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Brows or the the food sources tend to shift whenever
- 18:19Speaker 3: you get that first frost.
- 18:21Speaker 6: Yeah, by then you'd still see some of the you'd
- 18:24Speaker 6: see some of the farmers picking corn by then, or
- 18:28Speaker 6: picking beans. They've already started to pick corn up here.
- 18:32Speaker 6: But you start to see deer shift from movement out
- 18:35Speaker 6: to those types of food sources like egg food sources.
- 18:38Speaker 5: You see them.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Start shift inwards to.
- 18:42Speaker 6: Trees, dropping acorns, stuff like that.
- 18:46Speaker 2: So is that what you've been hunting, is you know
- 18:48Speaker 2: a major egg food sources.
- 18:51Speaker 6: Yeah, so I tend to I tend to make my
- 18:54Speaker 6: decisions off of trail cameras right now because the land
- 18:56Speaker 6: I hunt isn't driving distance of my house, and so
- 19:02Speaker 6: I tend to hunt off of trail cameras right now.
- 19:04Speaker 2: And basically I'm really looking at travel.
- 19:06Speaker 6: Corridors, not necessarily where I would set up.
- 19:09Speaker 2: But to go, all right, are you moving in this direction?
- 19:13Speaker 6: If they're moving in this direction, then yes, they're probably
- 19:16Speaker 6: hitting that field during the evening time. And so I'm
- 19:21Speaker 6: just seeing what's moving to the food source.
- 19:24Speaker 3: Gotcha, are you thinking about scrapes at all yet or
- 19:28Speaker 3: is it still too early?
- 19:30Speaker 2: It's too early.
- 19:30Speaker 6: I would expect to see that here in the next
- 19:32Speaker 6: week or two where you see an uptick in scrapes
- 19:35Speaker 6: and rubs.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Actually, so in the next week is are you would
- 19:40Speaker 2: you change what you're doing if you're going forward and
- 19:42Speaker 2: hunting next week or would you stick with you know,
- 19:45Speaker 2: trail camera data that's showing you where they're head into
- 19:49Speaker 2: and essentially hunting between bed and food.
- 19:52Speaker 6: I would say within okay, I would say within the
- 19:54Speaker 6: next week, I'm going to stick with the trail cam
- 19:57Speaker 6: data and I'm going to hunt between bed and.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Food here in the next two to three weeks.
- 20:02Speaker 6: Then I would start looking for scrapes and rubs and
- 20:05Speaker 6: really determine, Hey, am I going to put my setup
- 20:08Speaker 6: near one of those travel corridors from scrape to rub
- 20:15Speaker 6: and just use that as where I would set up.
- 20:19Speaker 3: All right, cool man, So looking forward for the next week,
- 20:21Speaker 3: then if it's kind of consistent with what you've been
- 20:23Speaker 3: saying on a scale of one to ten, what do
- 20:25Speaker 3: you expect bug movement to be like over the next week?
- 20:29Speaker 2: Buck movement over the next week I would expect it
- 20:34Speaker 2: to probably be a six. Pretty good, that's not bad, man.
- 20:39Speaker 6: Yeah, but that's also factoring in, Hey, through the trail cameras,
- 20:44Speaker 6: Do I have them figured out? Because I mean they're
- 20:46Speaker 6: still moving during the day, But it's do I have
- 20:49Speaker 6: that sussed out to know? Am I going to be
- 20:51Speaker 6: close to where they're still moving during the day between
- 20:54Speaker 6: these food sources embedding? Then I would say it's a six.
- 20:57Speaker 6: But below that, if you're just winging it, it drops.
- 21:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, well I feel like every time I'm winging it,
- 21:03Speaker 2: I have low odds anyway, So try gammers are helpful things, man,
- 21:07Speaker 2: for sure. Well we appreciate it. Cam. Thanks for the report. Man,
- 21:11Speaker 2: I hope that going forward. Uh like in two or
- 21:14Speaker 2: three weeks you're killing rutting bucks over scrapes and stuff. Man, Yeah,
- 21:19Speaker 2: I mean that'd be awesome. I'll for sure let you
- 21:21Speaker 2: guys know. All right, guys, Yeah, I have a good
- 21:24Speaker 2: one you too, see you on the phone now. I've
- 21:44Speaker 2: got Jason Redd. He's been out in North Carolina doing
- 21:48Speaker 2: some timber ninja stuff and hunting. How's it going, man, Man,
- 21:52Speaker 2: it's doing good. It's a beautiful day. I hear some
- 21:55Speaker 2: birds out there in the background. It sounds like, Yeah,
- 21:58Speaker 2: I'm sitting on the back porch. Yeah, you know, I
- 22:00Speaker 2: mean Portchiting this time of year can be pretty fun.
- 22:02Speaker 2: It's a little warm in Texas, but I don't know
- 22:04Speaker 2: if it's the same there in North Carolina or not.
- 22:07Speaker 8: Today Verhah is about seventy four. But we came out
- 22:09Speaker 8: of this. It's been hot. This is the end of
- 22:13Speaker 8: summer here, but this is our kind of like first
- 22:14Speaker 8: little sprinkling at fall.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Yeah, that's cool. So you've been hunting a little bit
- 22:19Speaker 2: this week. You're the kind of guy that likes to
- 22:22Speaker 2: get after a target buck sometimes and really trying to
- 22:24Speaker 2: figure out something, especially on public land, and you know
- 22:28Speaker 2: some of that. Can you explain kind of what the
- 22:30Speaker 2: country you've been hunting looks like?
- 22:33Speaker 8: So, yeah, I hunt mainly National Forest up the mountains
- 22:35Speaker 8: North Carolina, So it's a lot of old grove forest,
- 22:39Speaker 8: you know, really no no timber cuts, you know, masts
- 22:44Speaker 8: and terrain is like your key key thing components here.
- 22:48Speaker 8: But yeah, I've been after a buck for four years
- 22:51Speaker 8: that I'm hunting right now.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Yeah, you told me you feel like you're kind of
- 22:54Speaker 2: squeezing in on him. And figuring him out. Now what
- 22:57Speaker 2: kind of what kind of pattern have you been unting
- 23:00Speaker 2: him on right now? What I've been really focused on
- 23:04Speaker 2: is food. Acorns are key here.
- 23:07Speaker 8: Acorns are dropping heavy in my area, and I know
- 23:11Speaker 8: where he likes to bed this time of year. He's
- 23:13Speaker 8: opened up some sign in there last week. You know
- 23:17Speaker 8: that they just started shedding their velvet last week, and
- 23:20Speaker 8: these rubs definitely looked like you know, he was shedding
- 23:22Speaker 8: his velvet.
- 23:23Speaker 2: And then he.
- 23:24Speaker 8: Also, you know, with that velvet coming off, that testosterone
- 23:26Speaker 8: going up, you know, deer kind of doing some funny
- 23:29Speaker 8: things right now. These bucks are and he already opened
- 23:31Speaker 8: up a scrape this week too, so you know, it's
- 23:35Speaker 8: right in the line, on this elevation line, with his
- 23:37Speaker 8: bed at this saddle. The one thing that limits me though,
- 23:41Speaker 8: is that I know he's bedding on private and I'm
- 23:43Speaker 8: hunting on the public, so I can't push any further
- 23:46Speaker 8: than I am. So you know, really what I'm working
- 23:49Speaker 8: on is, you know, him coming to this saddle to
- 23:52Speaker 8: eat acorns, but with so much mass on the ground
- 23:54Speaker 8: right now, he doesn't had to travel very far.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Do you have cameras in the area.
- 23:59Speaker 8: I just put one in that area because he wasn't
- 24:01Speaker 8: in there last year this time, but he had been
- 24:03Speaker 8: the previous years that I've hunted him, and for whatever reason,
- 24:06Speaker 8: I didn't get him in their early season last year.
- 24:08Speaker 8: And I think, you know, as he's you know, he's
- 24:11Speaker 8: at least a seven year old beer, so I think,
- 24:14Speaker 8: you know, his home range is shrinking and this is
- 24:17Speaker 8: primarily has been his core area. So I think he's
- 24:20Speaker 8: going to be in there tire this year.
- 24:22Speaker 2: I'd be interested to see how much daylight movement you're
- 24:25Speaker 2: getting for sure. That's ah, you know, that's an interesting
- 24:29Speaker 2: It's an interesting time of year because you know, as
- 24:31Speaker 2: we get kind of closer to October, some of those
- 24:33Speaker 2: scrapes will open up and those kind of things, and uh,
- 24:36Speaker 2: in my in the past, you know, it's it can
- 24:39Speaker 2: still be hard to kill him very far from their beds,
- 24:42Speaker 2: you know, and until like late October a lot of times.
- 24:45Speaker 2: So that's interesting. Now, if you were you know, you said,
- 24:50Speaker 2: you've had kind of a just a spout of decent weather,
- 24:54Speaker 2: good decent tempts. It's been kind of warm before that.
- 24:57Speaker 2: What is uh, what is the forecast looking like going forward?
- 25:00Speaker 2: I mean, are you going to be probably sticking to
- 25:02Speaker 2: the same type of thing, trying to really just hunt
- 25:04Speaker 2: really close to that private and and hopes that he
- 25:07Speaker 2: shows up in the daylight.
- 25:09Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean so, actually I'm going on a trip
- 25:12Speaker 8: out of state next week, but if I was hunting him,
- 25:16Speaker 8: you know all this week, you know that moon's starting
- 25:19Speaker 8: to come full, and I do notice a little bit
- 25:21Speaker 8: more mid day movement when you have a full moon
- 25:24Speaker 8: in the early season, because I you know, I think
- 25:26Speaker 8: this beer out but uh yeah, but my goal is
- 25:29Speaker 8: I did put a sale cam in there, and I
- 25:30Speaker 8: want to see, you know, if there's potential that he's
- 25:32Speaker 8: beating on the other side of his sadle. If he is,
- 25:34Speaker 8: I can push a little bit further, so I'd be
- 25:36Speaker 8: in there, you know, really.
- 25:38Speaker 2: As close as I could. Because any type.
- 25:40Speaker 8: Of weather change, you know it's somewhat drastic or the
- 25:44Speaker 8: moon can make that deer guy his bed a little
- 25:46Speaker 8: bit surelier and travel a little bit longer.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Sure So, if you had to make a guess at
- 25:52Speaker 2: what the buck movement will be like on a scale
- 25:55Speaker 2: of one to ten in the next week, based off
- 25:57Speaker 2: of weather patterns, moon or just time a year or
- 26:01Speaker 2: anything any variable, what would you rate the buck movement
- 26:05Speaker 2: to be like, if you had to guess.
- 26:07Speaker 8: I think, if you know, as we get into later
- 26:09Speaker 8: next week, i'd be more along with seven scale personally,
- 26:14Speaker 8: and I would, like I said, I think I would
- 26:16Speaker 8: gamble on that being a midday, early season movement, So
- 26:19Speaker 8: I'd be getting to my stand about seven or eight
- 26:21Speaker 8: o'clock and pretty much sitting all day if I had
- 26:23Speaker 8: something I was seriously after. If I don't have something
- 26:26Speaker 8: I'm seriously after right now, I'd have a stand on
- 26:28Speaker 8: my back checking fresh sign around dropping oaks, because you
- 26:31Speaker 8: know those bucks, they tend to like a certain o
- 26:33Speaker 8: shaw until they move on to another one.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Gotcha, man, that's a good report. Well, I appreciate the time, Jason,
- 26:38Speaker 2: and I hope that you get to wrap your hands
- 26:40Speaker 2: around his antlers at some point man this year. Yeah, buddy,
- 26:43Speaker 2: we will, thanks man. Okay, Now on the phone, I've
- 26:47Speaker 2: got Garrett Oddison. He's hunting up in Minnesota. He's been
- 26:50Speaker 2: hunting with the White Tailed DNA team and Alex Comstock
- 26:53Speaker 2: up there. Man, what's been going on?
- 26:56Speaker 4: Oh, not a whole lot, Tit's I've been pretty slow. Actually,
- 27:00Speaker 4: are mature bucks are kind of mi I A we
- 27:02Speaker 4: actually just had one show up the other day. But
- 27:05Speaker 4: for the most part, we're just sitting in spots waiting
- 27:08Speaker 4: for those boys to show up.
- 27:10Speaker 5: Yeah are they?
- 27:12Speaker 2: So? Are those big mature bucks you when you say
- 27:14Speaker 2: showing up you're mean on camera?
- 27:16Speaker 5: I guess right, yeah, pretty much, or we're the mouth.
- 27:19Speaker 2: I guess Okay, sure.
- 27:21Speaker 5: So we're in a suburban setting, so you'll talk around.
- 27:25Speaker 2: Here, yeah, man, I mean people are seeing that. There's joggers,
- 27:28Speaker 2: there's bickers, all of it. Man, So sure sure yeah.
- 27:33Speaker 2: So as far as as far as the camera data goes,
- 27:37Speaker 2: are those deers showing up in daylight? Ah?
- 27:41Speaker 5: Not yet so far.
- 27:42Speaker 4: I think we're so are we're blocked up in our city.
- 27:47Speaker 4: We're giving sections, so we're only able to hunt so far.
- 27:50Speaker 4: And some of these big mature bucks are smart, you know,
- 27:53Speaker 4: and they pulled off in the spots that you can't hunt.
- 27:56Speaker 5: And then once we get closer.
- 27:57Speaker 4: To the middle of October November, they're going to start growing.
- 28:00Speaker 5: Up in those spots where we can hunt.
- 28:03Speaker 4: Right now, we're getting them, yeah right, we're getting them
- 28:05Speaker 4: after dark right now?
- 28:07Speaker 2: Gotcha? So what what patterns are you hunting them on?
- 28:11Speaker 2: Are you just hoping that you can get as close
- 28:13Speaker 2: to bedding as possible, or are you sitting near feed
- 28:15Speaker 2: of some sort or what?
- 28:17Speaker 5: Yeah, right now we're sitting pretty close to feed.
- 28:19Speaker 4: We're still, like pretty much mostly everybody in the Midwest.
- 28:22Speaker 5: Hunting food to bed.
- 28:23Speaker 4: We're just trying to get in between those bucks and
- 28:26Speaker 4: just hoping for a hail Mary. Right now, one of
- 28:29Speaker 4: our teammates is on a pretty good one, and so
- 28:32Speaker 4: he's on.
- 28:34Speaker 2: I guess is the what's the feed that you're you have?
- 28:40Speaker 4: Uh, we got acorns, we have apples.
- 28:45Speaker 5: Sometimes the deer, you know, going to people's gardens.
- 28:47Speaker 4: So if you can set up close to as close
- 28:50Speaker 4: as you can to people's houses, I mean, that's where
- 28:52Speaker 4: the deer is trying to go.
- 28:54Speaker 2: Gotcha. Okay, So as far as like the you know,
- 29:00Speaker 2: shoot a deer in that situation, does it ever make
- 29:02Speaker 2: you nervous?
- 29:03Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 29:04Speaker 5: It does, for sure. For sure. You try.
- 29:07Speaker 4: That's what the whole summer is, trying to make the
- 29:09Speaker 4: most ethical shot and make the most when it happens.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I bet man. So, you know, when I talked
- 29:16Speaker 2: to you first before we were on air here, you
- 29:19Speaker 2: mentioned that it's kind of rainy up there. I guess
- 29:21Speaker 2: it's been kind of rainy. Has that been kind of
- 29:25Speaker 2: the conditions last week?
- 29:28Speaker 5: Uh?
- 29:28Speaker 4: I know they've actually been pretty hot, which is probably
- 29:32Speaker 4: why those bucks are staying after.
- 29:34Speaker 5: Dark two before they're getting up out of their beds.
- 29:36Speaker 2: So do you think this weather will change things?
- 29:40Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 29:40Speaker 4: For sure, because I'm looking at next week, it's supposed
- 29:42Speaker 4: to temperature supposed to drop into the sixties, so that
- 29:46Speaker 4: should get.
- 29:46Speaker 5: Those deer moving earlier.
- 29:48Speaker 2: Okay, So you so if you were going to be
- 29:51Speaker 2: hunting next week, or say you're gonna you're going to hunt,
- 29:55Speaker 2: are you hunting the same patterns essentially hunting apple trees,
- 29:58Speaker 2: ach and trees, those kind of things, and trying to
- 30:01Speaker 2: still hope that those bucks are just getting up on
- 30:03Speaker 2: their feet earlier, but you're you know, ending up in
- 30:05Speaker 2: the in those spots before dark hits.
- 30:10Speaker 5: Yeah for sure, for sure.
- 30:11Speaker 4: I'm also going off of a historical data. I know
- 30:14Speaker 4: where these for the most part. I mean, it's a
- 30:16Speaker 4: deer can go wherever it wants.
- 30:18Speaker 5: But going off historical data, those deer they're bound to
- 30:21Speaker 5: move through my area. I just got to be there
- 30:23Speaker 5: at the right place at the right time, right.
- 30:25Speaker 4: So this, like you said, this next week is looking
- 30:28Speaker 4: a lot better than it did opening.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Week, gotcha. Okay, So if you if you had to
- 30:33Speaker 2: rate it on a scale of one to ten as
- 30:34Speaker 2: far as buck movement goes in the next week, based
- 30:37Speaker 2: off of any variables you can think of, what would
- 30:40Speaker 2: you what would you give it?
- 30:42Speaker 5: I would go probably solid five.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Okay, that's good man. You know five was my number
- 30:48Speaker 2: in high school, So I'm cool with that. You know, awesome, dude. Well,
- 30:53Speaker 2: I appreciate the information, Garrett, and I hope that those
- 30:55Speaker 2: big bucks show up for you next week.
- 30:58Speaker 5: All right, me too, man, say yeah, yeah.
- 31:03Speaker 3: Those are some fantastic reports from around the country, some
- 31:06Speaker 3: real information for you to use and to get you
- 31:08Speaker 3: hop about the upcoming days.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Thank you so much for listening.
- 31:12Speaker 3: If you need to get a little bit more hope
- 31:13Speaker 3: and you're kind of more the reading type, Mark Kenyon
- 31:17Speaker 3: just put out a article about how he spreadsheet can
- 31:20Speaker 3: help you kill your target buck. And that guy knows
- 31:23Speaker 3: because he is all about his target bucks and all
- 31:25Speaker 3: about his spreadsheets too.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Oh he is Holy field master. Right.
- 31:30Speaker 4: You know.
- 31:30Speaker 2: You can also watch Mark if you don't like reading
- 31:33Speaker 2: too much, which I understand. Mark actually has a new
- 31:37Speaker 2: there's a new episode out on the med Eater YouTube
- 31:40Speaker 2: channel for the one Week in November series. Mark is
- 31:43Speaker 2: the thumbnail guy. So if you see oh Mark in
- 31:46Speaker 2: the sweet new source jacket from First Light with the
- 31:49Speaker 2: binos in his hands, trying to look at a deer
- 31:52Speaker 2: a target buck apparently down in to the right corner,
- 31:55Speaker 2: that's that is a new video on the YouTube channel.
- 31:57Speaker 2: You should check it out. Guys, Thanks for listening this week.
- 32:00Speaker 2: This has been ret fresh, Keep it fresh.
