Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / GOP RACES to replace Sen. Lindsey Graham
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I do know that there are at least one or
- 0:02Speaker 1: two Congress members that I would expect him to master
- 0:05Speaker 1: our governor to consider. I would imagine that there is
- 0:09Speaker 1: going to be a sprint because, as you remember, Kristin
- 0:12Speaker 1: Linday is up for reelection right now. So next month
- 0:16Speaker 1: there will be likely an open primary to replace the
- 0:20Speaker 1: Republican nominee, and by the end of the month, I
- 0:22Speaker 1: would assume that we will be well on our way
- 0:25Speaker 1: to electing someone as his successor. Hard to swallow that
- 0:30Speaker 1: life moves so quickly and the party doesn't stop ever.
- 0:36Speaker 2: That's South Carolina Senator Tim Scott acknowledging the stark political
- 0:39Speaker 2: reality as shocking and tragic as he's calling Lindsay Graham's
- 0:43Speaker 2: sudden death is. It does affect the balance of power
- 0:47Speaker 2: in a narrowly controlled Senate. State law calls for a
- 0:50Speaker 2: special fast track primary for a new nominee to face
- 0:53Speaker 2: Democrat Annie Andrews in November. Let's bring in Mark Bednar,
- 0:58Speaker 2: a former communications director for former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
- 1:03Speaker 2: So this seat is not going to sit empty until November.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Mark, correct, Yeah, and John, thanks for having me. I
- 1:11Speaker 3: think it's gonna be really critical. We're gonna see in
- 1:13Speaker 3: the next we're gonna have a funeral seat where President
- 1:16Speaker 3: Trump and Governor Big Master, they're going to need to
- 1:18Speaker 3: coordinate together. Who's the best person to appoint to that
- 1:21Speaker 3: seat immediately? But then also do you want to balance that.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Do you want somebody who's just a caretaker for right
- 1:26Speaker 3: now or do you want somebody who can also simultaneously
- 1:29Speaker 3: run to also fill that spot in November, you know,
- 1:32Speaker 3: coming up in these next few weeks here.
- 1:35Speaker 2: And it was, you know, as we were just talking
- 1:40Speaker 2: about with with Brett Baer, Nancy Mayce, the congresswoman from
- 1:44Speaker 2: South Carolina, is considering running, but she has crossed swords
- 1:48Speaker 2: with President Trump, and these days in the Republican Party,
- 1:51Speaker 2: that's not necessarily a way to win an election or
- 1:55Speaker 2: win a seat.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Yeah, John, you're right. President Trump didn't endorse her for
- 1:59Speaker 3: good reason. She came up in fifth in the governor
- 2:03Speaker 3: race as a result, and even this morning, with Senator
- 2:06Speaker 3: Graham having been having passed less than twelve hours earlier,
- 2:10Speaker 3: she's putting out memes about her running. So she basically
- 2:14Speaker 3: demonstrated to the entire country how seriously everyone else should
- 2:17Speaker 3: take her by issuing a meme like that. But there
- 2:20Speaker 3: are a lot of people within the Republican Party in
- 2:23Speaker 3: South Carolina. Russell Frye, you know who's been mentioned. He's
- 2:26Speaker 3: a great member of Congress. He can make a move here.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Of course, Lieutenant Governor who is an ally President Trump,
- 2:32Speaker 3: she would be a great choice as well. So there's
- 2:34Speaker 3: really a good stable here for the President and the
- 2:37Speaker 3: governor to really come to a conclusion here on who
- 2:40Speaker 3: to coalesce around. And the sooner that we come to
- 2:43Speaker 3: these decisions as a party, the more easily they can
- 2:46Speaker 3: go up against the Democrat. And we can't forget Senator
- 2:50Speaker 3: Graham in twenty twenty, he had one hundred and thirty
- 2:53Speaker 3: two million dollars spend against him by Jamie Harrison. So
- 2:56Speaker 3: even though we viewed we view South Carolina as a
- 2:59Speaker 3: right state and it is, this is definitely a place
- 3:02Speaker 3: where Democrats, should they so choose, they can spend a
- 3:05Speaker 3: lot of money and cause Republicans to spend a lot
- 3:07Speaker 3: of money too. So the sooner that Republicans and President
- 3:10Speaker 3: Trump can coalesce around a candidate here, the better off
- 3:13Speaker 3: the party is going to be.
- 3:14Speaker 2: We have a list of the potential candidates. The two
- 3:17Speaker 2: of them. We've already mentioned the Lieutenant governor Pamela Evet
- 3:20Speaker 2: as well as Nancy Mays. Also Representative Russell Frye and
- 3:26Speaker 2: Mark Lynch. Are you picking favorites from among these four?
- 3:30Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I already mentioned Congressman fry Like. He's a
- 3:33Speaker 3: great member. I think he would be a really good
- 3:35Speaker 3: opportunity here to represent South Carolina's the state. Also, lieutenant governor,
- 3:40Speaker 3: I think those two are the top highest two in
- 3:42Speaker 3: the running right now. You know the fact that if
- 3:45Speaker 3: this is South Carolina, it is a red state, that
- 3:47Speaker 3: there is a plethora, a bounty of Republicans to choose from.
- 3:51Speaker 3: That is a good thing. That's good for the state.
- 3:53Speaker 3: That's good fulfilling the seat more quickly. And also two John,
- 3:57Speaker 3: it's important to fill this seat if you're the governor
- 3:59Speaker 3: because you want to deliver that extra vote to the
- 4:01Speaker 3: Senate so that President Trump's agenda between now in the midterms,
- 4:04Speaker 3: you can actually have an extra vote because we know
- 4:07Speaker 3: Democrats are not going to vote for anything here on out,
- 4:10Speaker 3: like we might even face another government shutdown as a result.
- 4:13Speaker 3: So it's gonna be really important that Republicans have every
- 4:15Speaker 3: single vote that they can in the chamber in the
- 4:18Speaker 3: Senate Chamber at any given time, and even Joe Wilson
- 4:21Speaker 3: recognized this with this majority in the House, that he's
- 4:24Speaker 3: going to hang back because that majority is so small.
- 4:27Speaker 3: So it's going to be really important. Let's get this
- 4:29Speaker 3: done quick. Russell Fry he'd be great. The lieutenant governor,
- 4:32Speaker 3: I think she'd be great too. I think we're gonna
- 4:34Speaker 3: have to wait and see where the President and the
- 4:35Speaker 3: governor are going to end up on this.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Yeah, Congress, when Joe Wilson says he will remain in
- 4:39Speaker 2: the House, won't run for the seat, are you at
- 4:42Speaker 2: all concerned the Democrats couldn't pick up this Senate seat.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Well, if there's any sort of shenanigans regarding you know,
- 4:50Speaker 3: if we get the wrong candidate in there, obviously Congresswoman Mace,
- 4:54Speaker 3: if she does more memes announcing your candidacy and for
- 4:56Speaker 3: whatever miraculous reason, she became the nominee, that could be damaging.
- 5:00Speaker 3: That would cost the state the Republican Party a lot
- 5:03Speaker 3: of money. But no, I think that we're gonna be
- 5:05Speaker 3: able to get a good nominee going forward, and that
- 5:08Speaker 3: we can solidify that seat and then make sure that
- 5:11Speaker 3: we can play offense in other seats that we can
- 5:13Speaker 3: put money in Ohio, Alaska, Iowa, make sure to expand
- 5:17Speaker 3: in Maine, and maybe go on offense a little bit
- 5:20Speaker 3: in Georgia. So the map is still in favors a
- 5:24Speaker 3: Republican majority in the Senate. Of course, there's a lot
- 5:26Speaker 3: of activity to be considered in the House as well,
- 5:30Speaker 3: But no, I think this is a seat that's going
- 5:31Speaker 3: to stay solidly Republican, but Democrats might make us work
- 5:35Speaker 3: for it and spend some money here.
- 5:37Speaker 2: All right, Mark bednar Mark, Thanks.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Thanks John.
