- 0:10Unknown: Do you know that they've come up with actually a name for this? It's called Main
- 0:15Character Syndrome.
- 0:20Randy Black: Randy
- 0:21Black.
- 0:22Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy Black. Randy
- 0:25Black. Randy Randy Black. He's a troublemaker.
- 0:31Welcome back to Randy Unscripted. I'm your host, Randy Black, and this is the podcast where
- 0:37I talk about whatever thoughts come across my brain
- 0:40whenever they happen to do so.
- 0:43You know, one of the strangest things about
- 0:46modern culture
- 0:48is how people
- 0:50no longer
- 0:51simply live their lives.
- 0:54They present their lives.
- 0:57Everything becomes
- 0:59content.
- 1:00Every meal,
- 1:02every opinion,
- 1:04every emotional moment, every accomplishment,
- 1:07every inconvenience,
- 1:10they're all documented,
- 1:12curated,
- 1:13uploaded,
- 1:14shared.
- 1:16And honestly, after a while, you begin to notice something
- 1:19deeper
- 1:20happening
- 1:21underneath all of that.
- 1:24More and more people seem to view life almost like a movie,
- 1:27and they see themselves as the star of it. Now technically,
- 1:31psychologists will tell you main character syndrome
- 1:34is not an actual medical diagnosis,
- 1:38but culturally,
- 1:40people immediately
- 1:41understand what it means
- 1:43because we all know exactly what this looks like.
- 1:47And today,
- 1:48I wanna talk about why this mindset has exploded,
- 1:52why social media seems to amplify it,
- 1:55and why endless
- 1:56self focus is is leaving so many people anxious
- 2:01and emotionally exhausted,
- 2:03and why I believe scripture diagnosed this problem
- 2:06long before Instagram
- 2:08or TikTok
- 2:09ever existed.
- 2:12So while I was
- 2:14thinking about this and researching
- 2:17the idea,
- 2:18I came across a clip from pastor Greg Laurie. Greg Laurie is the founder of the Harvest Christian Fellowship.
- 2:23He's a longtime evangelist.
- 2:25And I heard this clip on the podcast, We Get To Do This, hosted by Adam Curry and pastor Jimmy Pruitt.
- 2:31And, honestly, the more I listen to it, the more I realize that this conversation goes way,
- 2:38way beyond social media habits.
- 2:40It really gets down to the question of who sets
- 2:44at the center of our lives.
- 2:47Unknown: You know, it seems like we're a culture
- 2:49completely
- 2:50obsessed with ourselves.
- 2:52The Bible tells us one of the signs of the last days would be people
- 2:57would love themselves.
- 2:59I mean, isn't that what you see in social media, the very platform
- 3:02I'm on right now, spend five minutes on TikTok or Instagram,
- 3:07and you see people
- 3:08chronicling
- 3:09every event of their life. Here's what I had for breakfast,
- 3:13here's my latte in the afternoon,
- 3:16here's my new outfit,
- 3:18A complete obsession with self. Do you know that they've come up with actually a name for this? It's called main character syndrome.
- 3:27Randy Black: That line there really captures where we are culturally,
- 3:31a culture completely obsessed
- 3:34with ourselves.
- 3:36And honestly,
- 3:37it's hard to argue with that because the modern culture we live in constantly encourages people to
- 3:43elevate self
- 3:45above everything else.
- 3:48Promote yourself.
- 3:50Protect yourself.
- 3:52Express yourself.
- 3:54Build your platform. Grow your audience. Become your own brand.
- 3:58And on the surface,
- 4:00some of that sounds a little harmless.
- 4:02Confidence isn't bad.
- 4:04Purpose,
- 4:05it isn't bad either.
- 4:07Having goals, definitely not bad.
- 4:10But there's a difference between recognizing your worth
- 4:13and believing that the universe revolves around you, And that's where things begin to unravel
- 4:19because increasingly people don't just experience moments anymore.
- 4:22They narrate them.
- 4:24They frame them.
- 4:26They package them.
- 4:27They edit themselves in real time, and social media platforms reward this behavior constantly.
- 4:34Attention
- 4:36becomes currency.
- 4:38Validation
- 4:39becomes addictive.
- 4:42Identity
- 4:43becomes performative.
- 4:45Eventually
- 4:47people stop asking,
- 4:48Is this good?
- 4:50Is this meaningful?
- 4:52Is this wise?
- 4:54Instead
- 4:55they start asking,
- 4:58will this get attention?
- 5:00Man, that's a dangerous shift. Because once life becomes performance,
- 5:06you slowly
- 5:07stop living
- 5:09authentically.
- 5:10You start living
- 5:12for an audience.
- 5:14Unknown: And so the idea is
- 5:16my life is a movie. I'm the star of my own movie,
- 5:20and everybody else is a supporting actor.
- 5:24Randy Black: That may honestly be the clearest explanation of main character syndrome I've heard and found.
- 5:30My life is a movie.
- 5:32I'm the star,
- 5:34and everybody else
- 5:35is supporting cast.
- 5:38And and once you start looking for this mindset,
- 5:42you start to see it everywhere.
- 5:45People increasingly relate to others, as neighbors,
- 5:49not as fellow human beings,
- 5:52but as audiences.
- 5:54Even conversations feel different now.
- 5:56People aren't always listening.
- 5:59Sometimes they're just waiting for their turn to speak, waiting to redirect attention back towards themselves.
- 6:05And and social media,
- 6:08man, it amplifies this constantly.
- 6:12Algorithms,
- 6:13they reward outrage,
- 6:16drama,
- 6:18performance,
- 6:20attention seeking behavior.
- 6:23Quiet humility
- 6:24rarely
- 6:25ever trends.
- 6:28Faithfulness
- 6:30usually doesn't go viral.
- 6:33Serving others quietly doesn't attract millions of views,
- 6:37but spectacle does.
- 6:39And over time,
- 6:40that shapes people emotionally
- 6:43and spiritually
- 6:44because eventually,
- 6:46the pressure to maintain an image
- 6:49becomes exhausting.
- 6:50Trying to constantly present the idealized
- 6:53version of yourself, the polished version, the filtered version,
- 6:57man,
- 6:59that wears people down.
- 7:01Unknown: How did we get to this place? I think we built this. You could trace it back to the eighties and nineties
- 7:08where instead of correcting children, we felt we should constantly be affirming
- 7:13them, you know, helicopter
- 7:15parenting,
- 7:16as it's called giving participation
- 7:19trophies away,
- 7:20everyone's a winner,
- 7:22and this kind of mentality
- 7:24morphed into a complete obsession with self, and it culminated with the selfie. It's the most popular kind of photography
- 7:33out there right now.
- 7:34Randy Black: Now whether you agree with every part of Greg Laurie's cultural analysis there or not,
- 7:40I do think he identifies something that is absolutely extremely important.
- 7:46We created a culture
- 7:47heavily centered around affirmation,
- 7:50self focus,
- 7:52and image.
- 7:53And technology,
- 7:55man,
- 7:55it has accelerated all of it,
- 7:58especially social media. Because platforms
- 8:01built around likes and follows, comments, and attention, they naturally train people to think about themselves
- 8:09constantly.
- 8:11It's not just who am I,
- 8:13but it's
- 8:15how am I perceived?
- 8:17Man, that's different.
- 8:18And after a while,
- 8:20people can begin living almost entirely through
- 8:23external validation.
- 8:25They're curating themselves. They're branding themselves. They're they're managing perception
- 8:30constantly.
- 8:32And honestly, maintaining a public version of yourself all the time, man, that becomes exhausting,
- 8:39especially
- 8:40when real life
- 8:41never fully matches that curated version online.
- 8:45And that's where this next point Greg Laurie makes becomes
- 8:49really, really important.
- 8:51Unknown: So where did that get us? Studies show that despite being the most affirmed generation in history,
- 8:58Gen Z reports the highest rates of anxiety,
- 9:02loneliness,
- 9:02and depression
- 9:04ever recorded
- 9:05of any generation.
- 9:07Randy Black: That statement should really make people stop and think.
- 9:12The most affirmed generation in history
- 9:15and yet also
- 9:17one of the most anxious.
- 9:19Man, that tells us something.
- 9:21Because we were told if people expressed themselves more, they affirmed themselves more, if they focused on themselves more,
- 9:27they would finally become fulfilled.
- 9:30But that's not what happened.
- 9:33Instead,
- 9:34many people became trapped in a comparison culture.
- 9:37They're constantly measuring themselves against everybody else online,
- 9:41comparing
- 9:42their real life to everybody else's curated presentation.
- 9:46And that comparison,
- 9:48man, it never ends because online,
- 9:52nobody uploads ordinary life.
- 9:54Nobody uploads the boredom,
- 9:56failure,
- 9:57loneliness,
- 9:58insecurity.
- 10:00People upload highlight reels,
- 10:03and eventually many people begin feeling like they themselves
- 10:07are somehow falling behind.
- 10:11And eventually,
- 10:12many people begin feeling like they themselves are somehow
- 10:16falling behind
- 10:18even
- 10:19while constantly broadcasting their own lives.
- 10:22And I think underneath all of this,
- 10:25ultimately, it's a spiritual problem
- 10:28because human beings were never designed to worship themselves.
- 10:32Self worship always collapses eventually.
- 10:36Because if your identity depends on applause, you you could never
- 10:39never truly rest.
- 10:41You always need more validation,
- 10:44more attention,
- 10:45more reassurance,
- 10:46and eventually even affirmations stop satisfying,
- 10:50which is why I think Greg Laurie says what he says next is is so important because Jesus addressed this issue
- 10:57long before
- 10:59social media ever existed.
- 11:01Unknown: Listen. Jesus dealt with this two thousand years ago before there were social media platforms like Instagram or TikTok or X or any of the others. He said, if any man wants to follow me, let him tick up his cross and follow whoever will seek to save his life or lose it, and if you lose your life for my sake, you'll find it.
- 11:21Randy Black: That is
- 11:23such a radically different message
- 11:25from our modern culture because our modern culture says,
- 11:29follow your heart,
- 11:30build your platform, create your truth, be the center of your own story.
- 11:35But Jesus says, deny yourself,
- 11:38Take up your cross.
- 11:41Follow me.
- 11:42Man,
- 11:43that is completely opposite from the message our culture constantly pushes.
- 11:47And, honestly, I think that's that's one reason that so many people are emotionally exhausted today
- 11:54because self centered living sounds empowering at first,
- 11:59but eventually becomes
- 12:02emotionally crushing.
- 12:04You you were never designed to to carry the burden
- 12:08of being your own god.
- 12:10You were never designed to build your identity entirely around public validation.
- 12:16And maybe,
- 12:18just maybe that's why so many people feel trapped inside the performance
- 12:24because eventually
- 12:26performing
- 12:27becomes exhausting.
- 12:30But Greg Laurie
- 12:31makes one more point here that really brings the conversation
- 12:36together.
- 12:36Unknown: To lose your life means to recognize God's plan for you is better than your plan for yourself.
- 12:42Stop being so obsessed
- 12:44with self.
- 12:46Randy Black: That may be
- 12:47one of the hardest truths
- 12:49for our modern culture to accept,
- 12:52that God's plan for our lives
- 12:55may actually be better than the plans we create for ourselves
- 12:59because our modern culture teaches people to build identity entirely around
- 13:03self fulfillment.
- 13:05But Christianity,
- 13:07man,
- 13:08we teach surrender.
- 13:10And then Greg Laurie says this.
- 13:13Unknown: Lose the main character syndrome mentality
- 13:16and realize that the main character
- 13:18is Christ.
- 13:20Randy Black: The main
- 13:22character
- 13:23is Christ.
- 13:24Honestly,
- 13:25that may be one of the most countercultural statements a person could make in 2026
- 13:30because everything around us constantly pushes people towards self
- 13:34exaltation.
- 13:36Build yourself.
- 13:37Promote yourself.
- 13:38Curate yourself.
- 13:40Center everything around yourself.
- 13:44Christianity
- 13:45says peace is not found by making yourself the center of existence.
- 13:48Peace is found in surrendering yourself
- 13:51to the one who actually is.
- 13:54And strangely enough,
- 13:56that realization,
- 13:59it's freeing
- 14:00because suddenly you no longer have to constantly perform.
- 14:04You no longer have to turn every moment into content.
- 14:09You no longer have to live your life chasing validation
- 14:12from strangers online.
- 14:15You can simply live
- 14:17faithfully,
- 14:19quietly,
- 14:21honestly,
- 14:23humbly.
- 14:24You can care more about truth
- 14:27than about attention,
- 14:29more about character
- 14:31than about image,
- 14:33more about serving
- 14:35than being seen.
- 14:37And maybe
- 14:38one of the healthiest things people can do today
- 14:42is to stop obsessing
- 14:44over how life appears
- 14:46and to start focusing
- 14:47on whether life
- 14:49is meaningful.
- 14:51Because ultimately, at the end of the day,
- 14:53attention
- 14:54is not the same thing as purpose.
- 14:57Applause
- 14:58is not the same thing as peace.
- 15:02And self worship will never
- 15:05ever
- 15:06satisfy
- 15:07the human soul.
- 15:10Only God can do that.
- 15:13Luke chapter nine verse 23 tells us, if any man will come after me,
- 15:19let him deny himself
- 15:20and take up his cross daily
- 15:23and follow me.
- 15:25I'm Randy Black,
- 15:27and this has been Randy Unscripted.
