- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt Podcast. I'm
- 0:17Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number three
- 0:20Speaker 1: forty two. In the show, I am joined by professional archer,
- 0:24Speaker 1: Avid bow Hunter and YouTube phenomen Chris B to discuss
- 0:28Speaker 1: competitive archery, mental strength in the Moment of truth, and
- 0:31Speaker 1: epic road trip hunting. All right, welcome to the Wired
- 0:43Speaker 1: to Hunt podcast, brought to you by on X. Today,
- 0:46Speaker 1: we've got a fun show for you as I'm joined
- 0:49Speaker 1: by Chris B. Now, Chris is a fellow Michigander and
- 0:53Speaker 1: uh proud to say, a fellow Michigan State alum. And well,
- 0:56Speaker 1: I don't know if he's an a lumb yet, he's
- 0:57Speaker 1: a Michigan State attendee. Hand a guy that I started
- 1:00Speaker 1: taking notice of a few years ago through his popular
- 1:04Speaker 1: be Real YouTube channel where he showcases all sorts of
- 1:08Speaker 1: pretty epic hunting trips and archery videos and various other
- 1:12Speaker 1: fun antics. And he's doing a he's doing a very
- 1:14Speaker 1: good job with it. It's it's good stuff, it's fun stuff.
- 1:16Speaker 1: In addition to the hunting and shooting media he produces.
- 1:19Speaker 1: He's also a professional archer, having been a Vegas Shoot
- 1:22Speaker 1: finalist and having had multiple national and international podium finishes. So,
- 1:27Speaker 1: in short, the guy's a hell of a shot. He's
- 1:29Speaker 1: a bass to the wall hunter and a very good storyteller,
- 1:32Speaker 1: and that, in my mind, is the recipe for a
- 1:36Speaker 1: good chat. So today with Chris, we talked a little
- 1:38Speaker 1: bit about his competitive archer history and the ways that
- 1:41Speaker 1: shaped him as a hunter. We discussed some of the
- 1:44Speaker 1: lessons he's learned along the way about archery and competition
- 1:47Speaker 1: that have helped him perform in high pressure situations like hunting.
- 1:51Speaker 1: We dive into archery advice and practice regiments. We finally
- 1:55Speaker 1: spend a lot of time actually discussing his most recent
- 1:57Speaker 1: hunting season, which involved just it was an insane hunting season.
- 2:03Speaker 1: He had a d i y road trip to Alaska,
- 2:05Speaker 1: a three state tour across the West in a impressively
- 2:09Speaker 1: rigged camping van. He had more white tail hunts than
- 2:12Speaker 1: I think you can count on two hands, uh, And
- 2:15Speaker 1: across all that we touch on his favorite gear. We
- 2:17Speaker 1: talked about camping, food, hunting lessons learned, tips for planning, hunting,
- 2:21Speaker 1: road trips and a whole lot more so, that is
- 2:24Speaker 1: what we have in store for you. And during times
- 2:27Speaker 1: like these, while we're recording, which is in late March
- 2:30Speaker 1: mid the whole COVID nineteen pandemic, I think we need
- 2:33Speaker 1: conversations like this more than ever. You know. It's it's
- 2:36Speaker 1: one that's full optimism and fun and some escapism, and
- 2:40Speaker 1: it's just jam packed with something that we love so much,
- 2:43Speaker 1: which is hunting, and we need a little more of
- 2:46Speaker 1: that love and excitement right now, I think. So get
- 2:49Speaker 1: ready for an escape from the bad news and an
- 2:51Speaker 1: invitation to dream about your next hunting trip too. I
- 2:55Speaker 1: hope you enjoy it, and we'll talk to you soon.
- 2:58Speaker 1: All right, now, on the other side of the line
- 3:01Speaker 1: with me, I've got Chris B. Welcome to show. Chris,
- 3:04Speaker 1: thanks for having me Mark. Let's say it's exciting. I'm
- 3:07Speaker 1: excited to be talking on this. I've listened for a
- 3:10Speaker 1: long time. That's awesome, man. Well, thanks for listening and
- 3:14Speaker 1: for making the time um to do this. I guess
- 3:17Speaker 1: a lot of us have maybe a little more time
- 3:18Speaker 1: than usual since most people are on lockdown here at
- 3:22Speaker 1: home given the crazy things. Now you're you're in Michigan, right, Yeah, Yeah,
- 3:26Speaker 1: I'm not too far from Yeah, so we're we're underneath
- 3:30Speaker 1: the same government stay at home shelter in place order,
- 3:35Speaker 1: So we were not even supposed to be going to
- 3:38Speaker 1: the pro shop, going to the hardware store, doing anything anymore. Yeah. Yeah,
- 3:43Speaker 1: I got that text last night. Pretty crazy. Yeah. So
- 3:47Speaker 1: so basically all we're allowed to do is have Skype
- 3:49Speaker 1: phone calls to talk about honey. Not that bad. Yeah,
- 3:53Speaker 1: it could be worse, I guess in that case. Um. Yeah,
- 3:56Speaker 1: so you're you're somewhere in like mid Michigan, right, give
- 3:59Speaker 1: or take. Yeah, so I'm I'm just east of Lansing. Um,
- 4:03Speaker 1: and then I do a lot of hunting, like right
- 4:05Speaker 1: around the Lansing area. It's awesome, awesome. You're not too
- 4:08Speaker 1: far from my buddy further, he's east of Lansing a
- 4:11Speaker 1: little bit too, so you guys might be bumping to
- 4:14Speaker 1: each other in that general reagion. Um. Yeah, so you're
- 4:20Speaker 1: I've been kind of aware of you now for a
- 4:24Speaker 1: few years, watching your stuff on YouTube, thinking it's pretty cool,
- 4:28Speaker 1: and I I've had you on the list of someone
- 4:33Speaker 1: I wanted to talk to for a while now, and
- 4:35Speaker 1: after your hunting season, and seeing all that and just
- 4:39Speaker 1: being really horribly bitterly jealous of you in a lot
- 4:44Speaker 1: of ways and thinking to myself, Man, this crispy, I
- 4:46Speaker 1: don't like him at all. He's doing everything I want
- 4:48Speaker 1: to do right now. You got a heck of the year.
- 4:53Speaker 1: So so yeah, I want to talk to you about
- 4:56Speaker 1: last year. I want to talk to you about some
- 4:58Speaker 1: of the things you've got going on right now from
- 4:59Speaker 1: an archer perspective, because I think there's a lot of
- 5:01Speaker 1: people similar to us locked down and wanted to do
- 5:04Speaker 1: something productive and worked on your archery game. I think
- 5:07Speaker 1: is a pretty good thing to do right now. So
- 5:09Speaker 1: I want to dive into a lot there because you've
- 5:11Speaker 1: got this background in tournament archery, and I want to
- 5:15Speaker 1: I want to kind of hear a little bit about
- 5:17Speaker 1: how that started for you. As I understand it, you
- 5:20Speaker 1: got a hunting at a young age and then pretty
- 5:22Speaker 1: quickly got into the target archery stuff. Can you give
- 5:25Speaker 1: me just a really quick rundown of kind of how
- 5:28Speaker 1: that began for you, Um, what that looked like. So
- 5:32Speaker 1: I was, um, I was six years old when I
- 5:36Speaker 1: got like one of those little tiny fiberglass you know,
- 5:39Speaker 1: red bows shoot in the backyard and really don't stick
- 5:42Speaker 1: in the target like that type of setup. So I
- 5:45Speaker 1: shot that for like, you know, for a year or so,
- 5:49Speaker 1: and then um I found a local club it's actually
- 5:53Speaker 1: Livingston Conservation Sports Association UM and that's not too far
- 5:57Speaker 1: from me, and my dad got um me ugged into
- 6:00Speaker 1: a youth program up there, and I think I was
- 6:04Speaker 1: seven or eight when I started doing that. And it's
- 6:07Speaker 1: like you can basically like borrow a basic recurve and
- 6:11Speaker 1: you can shoot Saturday mornings and like you can score
- 6:14Speaker 1: if you want, and so it was kind of cool
- 6:16Speaker 1: and that got me like involved in a community aspect
- 6:19Speaker 1: of archery at like super young age. So that kind
- 6:22Speaker 1: of progressed. Like several years later, I got a boat
- 6:26Speaker 1: for Christmas, um a com pombo, and I kept shooting,
- 6:30Speaker 1: and then I think I was ten years old is
- 6:33Speaker 1: when I shot my first tournament, like just a local
- 6:36Speaker 1: state tournament. UM. And that's the first year I shot
- 6:39Speaker 1: a deer also with the bow, so they both kind
- 6:43Speaker 1: of were happening at the same time, and it just
- 6:45Speaker 1: kind of escalated from there. Like you go to a
- 6:47Speaker 1: couple of local shoots and then you know, you keep
- 6:50Speaker 1: getting better and better and then someone says, hey, you
- 6:53Speaker 1: should go shoot you know, this tournament out of state,
- 6:55Speaker 1: and You're like, okay, let's go explore that. So we went.
- 7:00Speaker 1: We went to a couple lot of state tournaments and
- 7:02Speaker 1: went to nationals and kept upgrading equipment, and eventually, by
- 7:06Speaker 1: the time I was in like fourteen fifteen sixteen, I
- 7:09Speaker 1: was on like United States Archery team for like their
- 7:13Speaker 1: national team, which is the top five in the nation.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Um So. I was on that from age fourteen through
- 7:21Speaker 1: nineteen every year, um so, traveling all around and stuff.
- 7:25Speaker 1: And then when I was when I was sixteen, actually
- 7:30Speaker 1: that's like when I had my first quote unquote sponsor.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Um I did really good at an event in Vegas.
- 7:37Speaker 1: And whenever you do good in like a big event
- 7:40Speaker 1: or anything, it just it just draws eyeballs on her
- 7:43Speaker 1: or whatever. So people are always their sponsors are always looking.
- 7:45Speaker 1: So anyways, um hoy actually picked me up when I
- 7:49Speaker 1: was sixteen at the Vega shoot. So from there that
- 7:52Speaker 1: kind of spurred my professional career, I guess you could say.
- 7:56Speaker 1: And I started shooting more in than professional divisions and
- 8:00Speaker 1: traveling around and everything. And you went to my right,
- 8:03Speaker 1: you went to Michigan State yeah, and technically I'm still going.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Nice go grain man, that's my own model right there.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Really right on, I didn't know that. Yeah, I'm oh,
- 8:15Speaker 1: oh nine graduate, so so so you're still you're still going.
- 8:21Speaker 1: You guys have got class canceled though now right, oh yeah,
- 8:24Speaker 1: I don't. I'm not taking any classes as a semester.
- 8:26Speaker 1: But yeah, all the everything's canceled. Everything shut down. Everyone
- 8:31Speaker 1: I believe how to be moved out by April something
- 8:36Speaker 1: the beginning of April. So that's pretty crazy. My wife
- 8:39Speaker 1: actually works at Michigan State, so she's she's pretty tapped
- 8:43Speaker 1: into what's going on. And every day I'm hearing the
- 8:45Speaker 1: different things and pretty nuts. So my camera guy, Bryce,
- 8:50Speaker 1: who does a lot of my stuff, he's a sophomore
- 8:54Speaker 1: at Michigan State, so he's a he's all pushed around. Now, yeah,
- 8:59Speaker 1: that's a place I love. It's nice. My wife works
- 9:02Speaker 1: from home most of the time, but she does go
- 9:04Speaker 1: in the office once a week or so, and uh
- 9:07Speaker 1: I sometimes go up there with her and work at
- 9:09Speaker 1: a Starbucks or something. It's just a good excuse to
- 9:11Speaker 1: get back up there and and just relive the gold
- 9:15Speaker 1: glory days. Well, next time, after all was quarantine stuff.
- 9:19Speaker 1: You should hit me up. Yeah, I go to all
- 9:21Speaker 1: the Starbucks by that. Yeah, there's a there's a couple
- 9:24Speaker 1: of good ones there. So yes, we'll have to uh,
- 9:26Speaker 1: we'll have to do that. Um. But something you said
- 9:29Speaker 1: a second ago, I want to rewind a little bit too, um,
- 9:31Speaker 1: because you got you got this early start and then
- 9:34Speaker 1: it progressed and you kept getting more and more into it,
- 9:37Speaker 1: and you didn't mention this, but I think as you
- 9:39Speaker 1: got more and more into the tournament side of things,
- 9:40Speaker 1: you also got more and more into the hunting side
- 9:42Speaker 1: to right. That's true, So that was that was going
- 9:46Speaker 1: on for you. I selfishly, and this is gonna date
- 9:49Speaker 1: me as being an old man now, but I selfishly
- 9:51Speaker 1: want to ask you about this because I'm a dad now.
- 9:55Speaker 1: I've got a two year old son and I want
- 9:58Speaker 1: him to do like the same thing, and of course,
- 10:00Speaker 1: so I don't want to force me anything, but I'd
- 10:01Speaker 1: selfishly like him to do the similar things that you
- 10:04Speaker 1: got into. Like I'd love to see him love archery
- 10:07Speaker 1: and love hunting from an early age. Um, My dad
- 10:10Speaker 1: got me into hunting, but not into the archery side
- 10:13Speaker 1: of things, and it was like a very casual thing
- 10:15Speaker 1: he was not. Um, you know, I kind of I
- 10:18Speaker 1: kind of picked it up myself and got really excited
- 10:20Speaker 1: about and got him more into it. UM. So I'm
- 10:23Speaker 1: curious for you, you know, when you were pretty young
- 10:26Speaker 1: and it sounds like your family is getting you into
- 10:28Speaker 1: the stuff. What were the things that were like most
- 10:30Speaker 1: impactful or that that helped you get into this and
- 10:33Speaker 1: became so passionate. Was it just the fact that you
- 10:36Speaker 1: got this bow and you were into it, or were
- 10:37Speaker 1: there other things that maybe I mean I was, I
- 10:41Speaker 1: was super into it. I mean I really I enjoyed it,
- 10:43Speaker 1: and I played other sports through UM, through elementary and
- 10:46Speaker 1: middle school. Like I was, I was active in other
- 10:49Speaker 1: sports along with doing it, so it wasn't like my
- 10:51Speaker 1: only thing, um. But no, it was. It was definitely
- 10:55Speaker 1: something something I was super passionate about. And I think
- 10:58Speaker 1: because it tied in with hunting so much at first,
- 11:02Speaker 1: because like, my dad's a big hunter. We live on
- 11:04Speaker 1: We're this we are the classic deer hunting Michigan family.
- 11:07Speaker 1: We live on ten acres. We have another fourteen acre chunk.
- 11:11Speaker 1: You know, we hunt out of the backyard. We have
- 11:13Speaker 1: several tree stands on the back so we would go
- 11:16Speaker 1: hunting all the time, and my dad got super into um,
- 11:21Speaker 1: I don't know if you're familiar with Tony Lapratte. Yeah,
- 11:25Speaker 1: so we've gone to a lot of his stuff. So
- 11:26Speaker 1: my dad got super into food plants and hinge cutting
- 11:28Speaker 1: and deer management and everything. So on our other chunk
- 11:31Speaker 1: right down the road. Um, we kind of went crazy
- 11:34Speaker 1: on that. So not only like deer hunting at a
- 11:37Speaker 1: young age and I'm like eight, nine, ten, eleven, Um,
- 11:42Speaker 1: we would go like multiple days in the summertime and
- 11:45Speaker 1: just like go to town over there doing two pods,
- 11:49Speaker 1: hinge cutting and everything. My dad was self employed, so
- 11:52Speaker 1: he can he was kind of flexible, so we spend
- 11:55Speaker 1: like days, you know, just going crazy over there. It's
- 11:58Speaker 1: it's it's pretty cool and now years later, but yeah,
- 12:02Speaker 1: so I was super involved all the way through. And UM,
- 12:06Speaker 1: I don't like a parent standpoint, My parents are just
- 12:08Speaker 1: super supportive of it. UM, never forceful. And now like
- 12:13Speaker 1: now that I'm older and I see um kids and
- 12:16Speaker 1: helping kids and a little bit of coaching here and there,
- 12:19Speaker 1: it's super important just for parents not to be like
- 12:21Speaker 1: forceful and things like you you you provide the opportunity
- 12:24Speaker 1: and if they bite on it, then you support. But
- 12:27Speaker 1: I see so many kids that, um, you know, it's
- 12:31Speaker 1: just like the satellite coach parent, you know, and it's
- 12:34Speaker 1: like just so forceful and like you gotta do this,
- 12:37Speaker 1: you gotta do that, and it's like it's like one,
- 12:41Speaker 1: I don't like to see it because it's just you know,
- 12:43Speaker 1: the kids doing something they might not actually want, you know,
- 12:46Speaker 1: and it just creates it just creates this friction. So yeah,
- 12:50Speaker 1: probably something that's similar to what you see across all
- 12:53Speaker 1: these other sports too, right, Yeah, but you know a
- 12:56Speaker 1: lot of these other sports are are a team oriented,
- 12:58Speaker 1: so you you get away with um, you know, the
- 13:02Speaker 1: team aspect. Archery is so individual, you know, it's it's practice.
- 13:06Speaker 1: His individual tournaments are individual, like you can shoot in
- 13:09Speaker 1: your backyard like it's it's not very team oriented. So
- 13:14Speaker 1: there are some advantages and disadvantages with that. It's a
- 13:18Speaker 1: good point. It's a good point. Uh. I'm curious if
- 13:22Speaker 1: you think that I'm on the right path then, because
- 13:23Speaker 1: I'm trying to take that approach you just said, like
- 13:26Speaker 1: show support, get him excited, but not force it. Um So,
- 13:30Speaker 1: so my son he's well on his way. He's two
- 13:32Speaker 1: full years old and he's got I've got him a
- 13:36Speaker 1: little nerve bow with a nerve arrow, and he is
- 13:39Speaker 1: to the point now where he gets pretty pumped. He'll
- 13:42Speaker 1: run around the house with his bow and he'll say,
- 13:44Speaker 1: shoot deer, Shoot deer. He'll go up to the shoulder mountains.
- 13:46Speaker 1: He'll he'll draw back, he'll stop them. He'll stop them
- 13:49Speaker 1: with him rat and then he'll shoot him with the
- 13:51Speaker 1: nerve bow. Would you say he's on the right path?
- 13:53Speaker 1: I think you're doing all right. That's funny, kills me.
- 13:58Speaker 1: It's pretty funny stuff, man, it's fun um. So so
- 14:02Speaker 1: then what about for other you know, younger folks listening.
- 14:06Speaker 1: I don't know, sixteen year olds out there, someone who's
- 14:08Speaker 1: maybe getting into it or dabbling, um, wants that he
- 14:11Speaker 1: has been considering should I start shooting tart show, shoot
- 14:14Speaker 1: three D or should shoot some league? Um? Any advice
- 14:18Speaker 1: for somebody who's thinking about getting into this is it?
- 14:20Speaker 1: Is it something that's going to help people become better hunters?
- 14:24Speaker 1: I would sure think so. But what are your thoughts
- 14:25Speaker 1: on that or any tips as far as what to
- 14:28Speaker 1: get involved in or anything. So I did a I'm
- 14:31Speaker 1: kind of refreshed on this subject because I just did
- 14:33Speaker 1: a blog post on it um. But the archery world
- 14:38Speaker 1: is like super intimidating to the average bowl hunter, Like
- 14:42Speaker 1: there's a there's a lot of unknowns. There's you know,
- 14:45Speaker 1: from equipment to form to even like going in a
- 14:47Speaker 1: pro shop and asking for help. Like if you if
- 14:50Speaker 1: you just bought a bow like ten years ago and
- 14:51Speaker 1: you haven't done anything since. Like, it's it's super intimidating.
- 14:55Speaker 1: So the best thing to do, UM, I think, in
- 14:58Speaker 1: any aspect if you're trying to find either more help
- 15:01Speaker 1: on your equipment, more help on form um, or like
- 15:05Speaker 1: more tournaments league type stuff, is trying to connect with
- 15:08Speaker 1: the pro shop UM most of the time. And I
- 15:11Speaker 1: understand there are pro shops that aren't as good as
- 15:15Speaker 1: others or friendly or whatever, but for the most part,
- 15:18Speaker 1: pro shops have a very good resource at getting you information.
- 15:23Speaker 1: You know, from leagues. Many pro shop have like Tuesday night,
- 15:27Speaker 1: Friday night leagues you can get plugged into, um, you know,
- 15:30Speaker 1: obviously helping with tuning and form and everything. But then
- 15:33Speaker 1: I mean online, like there's so much stuff online now,
- 15:36Speaker 1: I mean you could pretty much, you could pretty much
- 15:39Speaker 1: if you're that type of person, do everything on your own.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Tuning Lise and everything, but I still feel like getting
- 15:45Speaker 1: plugged in somewhere is so important. I mean, I've as
- 15:49Speaker 1: long as I've been shooting up always somewhat been plugged
- 15:51Speaker 1: in somewhere, even if it's like just a just a
- 15:54Speaker 1: club you know, where you see people every now and
- 15:56Speaker 1: again and you just go up and shoot. Um, it's
- 16:00Speaker 1: just it's it's important for growth, I feel like in archery,
- 16:02Speaker 1: because you see other people shoot, you see what they're doing,
- 16:05Speaker 1: you ask, you bounce questions. You know, if you just
- 16:07Speaker 1: shooting isolation, it's a I don't know, it's I feel
- 16:12Speaker 1: like that that community is so important in archery. It's
- 16:15Speaker 1: it's pretty easy to start off and ingrain bad habits
- 16:19Speaker 1: if you're just doing it by yourself. To right, that's yeah,
- 16:22Speaker 1: you know, you you get on a tangent of yeah this,
- 16:25Speaker 1: this feels good, you can do this, and you realize
- 16:27Speaker 1: that like something is totally jacked up. So and getting
- 16:31Speaker 1: a coach is important, like if you really really really
- 16:34Speaker 1: want to get good, like if you want to go
- 16:35Speaker 1: like the tournament route, tournament route. Um. I know guys
- 16:39Speaker 1: that have done it by themselves, but it's always hard
- 16:42Speaker 1: and they always find difficulties. Um, finding some sort of
- 16:45Speaker 1: coach is always super important, and you can and there's
- 16:49Speaker 1: resources online, like you can go on USA Archery and
- 16:53Speaker 1: they actually have a whole lineup of like certified coaches
- 16:56Speaker 1: in your area with like their selling and email number
- 17:00Speaker 1: and stuff, so you can actually reach out to him. Um.
- 17:03Speaker 1: But for the most part, hitting up a pro shop,
- 17:06Speaker 1: someone will know someone that knows someone. Most of the time,
- 17:10Speaker 1: you know, something will work. You know, I never went
- 17:13Speaker 1: the tournament route or considered that, but just back to
- 17:16Speaker 1: having a second set of eyes on you. I I
- 17:19Speaker 1: wish I had had that because I basically just taught
- 17:22Speaker 1: myself how to shoot, like my dad and I learned
- 17:24Speaker 1: how to bow hunt together. And and it's basically me
- 17:27Speaker 1: learning and showing him kind of and yeah, and and
- 17:33Speaker 1: and I probably learned it all wrong. Well I did
- 17:36Speaker 1: learn all wrong. I had a whole lot of bad
- 17:38Speaker 1: habits I just was kind of figuring out as I went.
- 17:40Speaker 1: And then over the last you know, five ten years,
- 17:43Speaker 1: I've had to address all these bad habits and things
- 17:46Speaker 1: I've been doing wrong and and trying to fix that
- 17:48Speaker 1: now that I know a little bit more. But man,
- 17:50Speaker 1: if if I had, you know, if I had been
- 17:52Speaker 1: doing it right fifteen years ago, eighteen years ago or whatever,
- 17:56Speaker 1: it would have been a whole lot easier for me now,
- 17:57Speaker 1: that's for sure. So I wish i'd had that. But yeah,
- 18:00Speaker 1: um it's a it's a great point you make, and
- 18:03Speaker 1: it's nice to know that if you do want to
- 18:04Speaker 1: go that more serious route, that you can find coaches.
- 18:07Speaker 1: And what's a coach to do? I mean, what's in
- 18:09Speaker 1: your in your kind of line of when they're up
- 18:12Speaker 1: to tournament kind of stuff? I mean, is a coach
- 18:15Speaker 1: meeting with you and just watching your shoot and running
- 18:17Speaker 1: you through drills and examining your former or what what's
- 18:20Speaker 1: that process look like? So like for me now, um,
- 18:23Speaker 1: my main coaches down in Atlanta, So and I'm to
- 18:28Speaker 1: the point like where I don't need like a tune
- 18:29Speaker 1: up like all the time, you know, But I mean
- 18:32Speaker 1: I still need when I go down there like every
- 18:34Speaker 1: couple of months because um Ul Trivi you archery. I
- 18:38Speaker 1: don't know if you've heard of them, They've been on
- 18:40Speaker 1: my stuff a little bit, but they're down in Atlanta too,
- 18:41Speaker 1: So I go down there for them a lot, and
- 18:43Speaker 1: then I get coaching also, But like you show up
- 18:46Speaker 1: and you know. His name is George. He's like, yep,
- 18:49Speaker 1: you're doing this or you're doing that, and I'm like,
- 18:50Speaker 1: all right, that's why I come down here. Still, it's
- 18:54Speaker 1: like you're you're never ending. You fall into these bad habits,
- 18:56Speaker 1: so they're they're minor form tweaks or recently it's been mental.
- 19:01Speaker 1: So George is really good at, you know, mindset type
- 19:05Speaker 1: stuff because archery and hunting. I mean, there's a reason
- 19:08Speaker 1: why there's buck fever. You know. All buck fever is
- 19:11Speaker 1: is your mind, you know, so if you can control that,
- 19:15Speaker 1: and it's no different in archery. I mean, like buck
- 19:17Speaker 1: fever is so so similar to like when you're super jack,
- 19:21Speaker 1: to like you know, shoot a perfect round, like your
- 19:24Speaker 1: last arrow on a perfect round, or you're about to
- 19:26Speaker 1: win a tournament, like mastering. That feeling is no different
- 19:31Speaker 1: either way. Do you feel like you've mastered it? No,
- 19:35Speaker 1: not even close. I don't know if you ever master it.
- 19:38Speaker 1: That's the thing. It's like this ongoing it's just an
- 19:41Speaker 1: ongoing battle. Like this year especially it was super hard,
- 19:45Speaker 1: like tournament wise for me because I like switch bow
- 19:47Speaker 1: companies and there's this extra pressure and so so tell
- 19:52Speaker 1: me about that. What do you mean by that extra pressure?
- 19:54Speaker 1: Is it because is it? Is it simply because you've
- 19:57Speaker 1: got pressure into a sponsor, or is it you're grow
- 20:00Speaker 1: a platform or is it you feel like, hey, I
- 20:02Speaker 1: really want to be winning these things, because all right,
- 20:04Speaker 1: it's just tell me all the above, all the above.
- 20:06Speaker 1: So like you switch when whenever you switch bow companies,
- 20:09Speaker 1: and um, I can have a little bit like following
- 20:12Speaker 1: has grown, you know, tremendously since the past years, so
- 20:15Speaker 1: there's more eyeballs on my personal channels, and you know,
- 20:20Speaker 1: I feel like it's not actually the case. I know
- 20:22Speaker 1: it's not actually the case, but I feel like I
- 20:24Speaker 1: let people down, you know, when I don't shoot well,
- 20:26Speaker 1: like followers or whatever. And then when you switch bow companies,
- 20:30Speaker 1: it's like you're like, oh, is he gonna shoot good
- 20:32Speaker 1: with the new bow? You know, because like you switch
- 20:36Speaker 1: and they're always like, you know, is he gonna shoot
- 20:38Speaker 1: as good or better or whatever? So there's like that
- 20:41Speaker 1: sort of pressure. And does does Derek Nelson never like
- 20:44Speaker 1: text you to say, man, you really screwed it up, dude?
- 20:47Speaker 1: I mean jokingly just kidding. Nelson's cool, And it's actually
- 20:52Speaker 1: Derek Phillips is uh is the pro staff manager um
- 20:57Speaker 1: on the target side. So they actually, I don't know
- 20:59Speaker 1: if you're familiar with them, most of the hunting people
- 21:01Speaker 1: probably aren't too much, but they have like um, you know,
- 21:05Speaker 1: Derek literally manages the pro staff for Matthews. So it's
- 21:10Speaker 1: really cool that there's like a whole community side on that. Yeah,
- 21:15Speaker 1: it's cool. So tell me, tell me about what you're
- 21:19Speaker 1: doing to try to I mean, because because where everyone listening,
- 21:23Speaker 1: all of us hunters were always trying to the same
- 21:24Speaker 1: thing when it comes to hunting. I mean, I don't
- 21:27Speaker 1: think I will ever get tired of thinking about or
- 21:31Speaker 1: talking about how to handle the moment of truth. Like
- 21:33Speaker 1: there's that's the crux of every it really is, and
- 21:37Speaker 1: the mental side of things is both frustrating and kind
- 21:39Speaker 1: of fascinating for me too. So how have you gone
- 21:42Speaker 1: about trying to tackle that? What do your what's your
- 21:46Speaker 1: coach say? What do you do? There's a lot this
- 21:49Speaker 1: is like this is a giant wormhole that you can
- 21:51Speaker 1: go down quick, especially with archery, because there's so there's
- 21:54Speaker 1: so many things. It's it's different archery archery in the
- 21:57Speaker 1: typical tournament, you could shoot anywhere from like dirty two,
- 22:01Speaker 1: you know, a hundred arrows for scoring in a day,
- 22:05Speaker 1: and most of the time every single one has to
- 22:07Speaker 1: be perfect. So instead of just like one shot like
- 22:11Speaker 1: on a deer, like like I can. I haven't mastered,
- 22:16Speaker 1: but I gotten pretty good at like pulling myself together
- 22:18Speaker 1: for one shot, but doing it for like ninety in
- 22:21Speaker 1: a row. That's it gets it gets more difficult for sure. UM.
- 22:26Speaker 1: So there's a there's a lot of things you can do. UM.
- 22:29Speaker 1: I think the most recently for me, like on a
- 22:31Speaker 1: personal level, has been, um being more intentional with my shooting.
- 22:40Speaker 1: So instead of wishing for things to happen, you actually
- 22:44Speaker 1: make them happen. So if you're sitting there aiming and
- 22:48Speaker 1: you have the pin in the middle, and you're just
- 22:50Speaker 1: sitting there and you're like, Okay, I really hope this
- 22:52Speaker 1: goes in the middle, and you're just like going through
- 22:54Speaker 1: your shot, and then the shot goes off and you're like, Okay,
- 22:56Speaker 1: did it go in the middle? You know, like that
- 22:58Speaker 1: sort of thing. And instead what I've been trying to
- 23:01Speaker 1: do is being way more intentional and being like, Okay,
- 23:04Speaker 1: this is going to go right in the middle, put
- 23:05Speaker 1: the pin on the middle, go through the shot. Yep,
- 23:08Speaker 1: that went in the middle. So it's like it's all
- 23:10Speaker 1: about mindset start to finish, from even walking in the
- 23:14Speaker 1: door of the tournament. You know, if you if you
- 23:20Speaker 1: it's so sensitive archery so sensitive, if you like, if
- 23:23Speaker 1: you have the wrong mindset all the way through, it
- 23:25Speaker 1: just it just impacts you know your shot so much.
- 23:28Speaker 1: So having a different mindset being more it's not necessarily confident,
- 23:32Speaker 1: because I feel like you can have confidence but still
- 23:34Speaker 1: have those hesitations throughout the shot, but um not having
- 23:39Speaker 1: hesitations throughout the shot. And I'm not talking about like punching,
- 23:41Speaker 1: because there's a difference being intentional and being like okay,
- 23:44Speaker 1: right now, you know that's not what I'm talking about.
- 23:46Speaker 1: I'm talking about like very very slight um intentional shots
- 23:52Speaker 1: and and that kind of goes from I don't know
- 23:55Speaker 1: if you've heard of Joel um from Yeah, yeah, he's
- 24:00Speaker 1: super at So me and him, me and him a
- 24:03Speaker 1: couple of months ago got talking and and I've known
- 24:06Speaker 1: of his stuff, but he really opened my eyes just
- 24:09Speaker 1: like a time in a conversation I was like, holy cow,
- 24:12Speaker 1: you know what you're talking about? Like I know and
- 24:14Speaker 1: I'm aware of everything he's saying, but just like the
- 24:16Speaker 1: way he says it and just goes about it. It's like, jeez,
- 24:20Speaker 1: so I don't know. That's kind of where I'm at
- 24:22Speaker 1: um personally. But there's there's all sorts of things you
- 24:26Speaker 1: know mentally that you can do. What what's something that
- 24:31Speaker 1: throws off your mindset? Like have you had have you
- 24:34Speaker 1: had an experience where you went into a tournament where hell,
- 24:37Speaker 1: even a hunt where you went in in your mind
- 24:39Speaker 1: just just wasn't right and you paid. Can you give
- 24:42Speaker 1: you an example, as someone next to you could just
- 24:44Speaker 1: be like, oh I just dropped a nine and you're
- 24:46Speaker 1: like crap, It's like am I gonna drop a nine
- 24:48Speaker 1: in this one? Like that's all it takes. And then
- 24:50Speaker 1: the entire time you can or you can't think about it.
- 24:54Speaker 1: It's all about how you deal with those type of
- 24:57Speaker 1: how do you get that out of your head? Then
- 25:00Speaker 1: there's all sorts it's like, um, let's see okay, So
- 25:04Speaker 1: a book um from Lanny Bassam. It's called what Winning
- 25:07Speaker 1: in Mind? He had a thing um where you have
- 25:09Speaker 1: to do a repetition of one thing and the only
- 25:11Speaker 1: thing about that one thing for like eight times in
- 25:13Speaker 1: a row. So like whatever it is, if you put
- 25:16Speaker 1: your pocket if you put your hand in your pocket
- 25:17Speaker 1: and take it out for eight times in a row,
- 25:20Speaker 1: and then you only like you literally have your conscious
- 25:23Speaker 1: mind only thinking about that, and then when you're done
- 25:26Speaker 1: with that sequence, then you forgot whatever you were thinking about.
- 25:30Speaker 1: There's things like that, or you just you know, you're
- 25:33Speaker 1: just confident with yourself and you'll be like, Okay, well
- 25:36Speaker 1: that guy at your shot nine, but I'm not gonna
- 25:37Speaker 1: shoot nine, and I'm just gonna shoot you know, my
- 25:40Speaker 1: shot or my arrow or or whatever. And that boils
- 25:44Speaker 1: down to more of um. You can look at your
- 25:48Speaker 1: scorecard um like all at once, like a big picture,
- 25:53Speaker 1: but what you really should be looking at and shooting
- 25:56Speaker 1: is one arrow at a time. So like every end
- 25:59Speaker 1: of vidual arrow is its own and it has its
- 26:02Speaker 1: own value and its own score and its own shot,
- 26:05Speaker 1: and it's not a culmination of it all. So it's like, sure,
- 26:08Speaker 1: it could be a three hundred out of three hundred
- 26:10Speaker 1: at the end, but every single arrow has to score
- 26:13Speaker 1: at ten. So all you're in control of you're not
- 26:16Speaker 1: in control of the future like the next arrow, and
- 26:18Speaker 1: you're not in control of the last arrow you just shot,
- 26:21Speaker 1: So all you all, you're in control of is this
- 26:24Speaker 1: one arrow right now? So just shoot a ten, Just
- 26:29Speaker 1: shoot the perfect shot, and then worry about the next one.
- 26:32Speaker 1: So when you boil it, when you boil it down,
- 26:34Speaker 1: you know, micro like that. It helps a lot too.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Easier said than done, though, I bet so much. I
- 26:41Speaker 1: wish I could just go up to the line and
- 26:42Speaker 1: be like, all right, you shoot three and then to
- 26:44Speaker 1: shoot it, you know, but you can't do that, So
- 26:46Speaker 1: so walk me through. Let's say you've shot your second
- 26:50Speaker 1: to last shot and it's good, Everything is perfect as
- 26:53Speaker 1: it could be. Now you get your last air of
- 26:55Speaker 1: the tournament. It's the it's the big Vegas shoot. I saw.
- 26:59Speaker 1: I don't I don't know I've anything you did, but
- 27:00Speaker 1: I saw you were a little bit, maybe a little
- 27:01Speaker 1: frustrated with how things ended up this past year in Vegas.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Is that right? Yeah? Well I dropped too, and you
- 27:05Speaker 1: drop one and you're done. Okay. So let's say it's
- 27:08Speaker 1: it's this coming this next season. You're in Vegas again.
- 27:12Speaker 1: You've done it perfect. Now you've got your last arrow.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Uh you you step up to the line. Walk me
- 27:18Speaker 1: through exactly what you do, exactly what yourself talk is.
- 27:22Speaker 1: I want to know the exact process you're gonna follow
- 27:26Speaker 1: on your final perfect shot to to finally do what
- 27:29Speaker 1: you want to do. Okay, so last year was actually
- 27:33Speaker 1: not the hardest, but I will walk it through for
- 27:35Speaker 1: me at least, but I will walk you through it. Um,
- 27:38Speaker 1: what is the hardest shot? Hard shots for me are
- 27:40Speaker 1: like the first ones? Well, would would you do anything
- 27:44Speaker 1: different from the first to last? Given that scenarily you
- 27:47Speaker 1: don't do anything different. And that's the thing. You don't
- 27:50Speaker 1: do anything different throughout the entire thing. Every single shots
- 27:53Speaker 1: exactly the same. And that's you know, it's all about repetition.
- 27:56Speaker 1: It's all about consistency. But there's also you know, every
- 28:00Speaker 1: everyone has a different things. A lot of people like
- 28:02Speaker 1: say things in their head as they shoot. But I mean,
- 28:04Speaker 1: I'll knock my arrow, I'll you know, get in my
- 28:07Speaker 1: pre draw, which is like knocking ero release, set everything up,
- 28:11Speaker 1: and then you always, like I always look at the target,
- 28:13Speaker 1: you know, get essentially acquired with the target because there's
- 28:16Speaker 1: multiple um spots on your target. There's like a triangle
- 28:20Speaker 1: for vegas, so you have to you're not allowed to
- 28:24Speaker 1: shoot two arrows in the same target. So and we
- 28:26Speaker 1: all we always shoot in the same order, like every
- 28:28Speaker 1: archer has their own order, so we're we're always pretty
- 28:31Speaker 1: good at that. UM. But now and again people shoot
- 28:34Speaker 1: like the neighbor's target or the one above them. So
- 28:37Speaker 1: you always want to acquire your target, like you always
- 28:39Speaker 1: lock lock on on your target. So pre draw, you
- 28:43Speaker 1: get set up, you drop back, and then you always
- 28:45Speaker 1: want to make sure you're going going into your shot
- 28:48Speaker 1: either um saying the repetition you know, sound or sequence
- 28:54Speaker 1: that you do once you get a full draw, or
- 28:56Speaker 1: like a blank mind or something positive. You never want
- 28:59Speaker 1: to you like, go in it with nothingness because when
- 29:02Speaker 1: your when your mind is not thinking about anything and
- 29:04Speaker 1: it's blank, it's super easy to bring in external sources
- 29:09Speaker 1: and you don't get thinking about something bad. Um. So yeah,
- 29:13Speaker 1: you go into that sequence and it's changed a lot
- 29:18Speaker 1: lately because I've been messing around that. But I've counted
- 29:22Speaker 1: you know, one, two, three, boom, and then you know,
- 29:26Speaker 1: shot goes off. You know, I've saying a song I've saying,
- 29:30Speaker 1: I've said, Um, there was a little phrase I was saying.
- 29:35Speaker 1: I forget what it is. It was a while ago,
- 29:37Speaker 1: but it was like one perfect shot, one perfect shot,
- 29:40Speaker 1: or you can say, okay, I'm gonna do this right now,
- 29:43Speaker 1: and then you draw out the last word until it
- 29:46Speaker 1: goes off. So it doesn't there's no right or wrong
- 29:49Speaker 1: with that. It's just like you should have some sort
- 29:52Speaker 1: of sequence when you're shooting, or you're gonna you're just
- 29:57Speaker 1: gonna get um you're more um favorable to have, like
- 30:03Speaker 1: you know, external things bothering you. Um So anyways, Yeah,
- 30:06Speaker 1: shot goes off and then you're good. But what happens
- 30:10Speaker 1: a lot of times is when you're under that stress,
- 30:12Speaker 1: your shots go a long, so you hold longer than normal,
- 30:15Speaker 1: and then you get under fatigue and you start getting
- 30:17Speaker 1: stressed and then shots go off and those are normally
- 30:21Speaker 1: the bad ones. So making sure your shot timing is
- 30:24Speaker 1: like relatively the same under those pressure situations is super important.
- 30:29Speaker 1: So you're those shots are holding longer just because you're
- 30:31Speaker 1: trying to be extra careful to make sure you're aiming
- 30:35Speaker 1: right or Yeah, the problem with archie if you try
- 30:38Speaker 1: too hard, you're gonna fail, right. That is so like
- 30:41Speaker 1: this weird fine line between being you can't be a
- 30:45Speaker 1: try hard But you also said like you want to
- 30:48Speaker 1: be intentional with it. You want to like you know,
- 30:50Speaker 1: as Joel Turner talks about you need to have a process,
- 30:53Speaker 1: you have to have you know, you have to be
- 30:54Speaker 1: in control of the whole shot sequence, but at the
- 30:57Speaker 1: same time, you also kind of want to be like
- 31:01Speaker 1: second nature almost like it's it's like you want to
- 31:04Speaker 1: be an autopilot, but you want to be in control.
- 31:06Speaker 1: And it's somewhere in between. That's the perfect place. But
- 31:09Speaker 1: it's really hard to put your finger on it. Um. Yeah,
- 31:12Speaker 1: I don't know, man, I'm I'm wanting I'm wanting you
- 31:15Speaker 1: to give me a secret weapon for this. There is
- 31:17Speaker 1: no secret weapon. That's the thing. I'm trying to figure
- 31:19Speaker 1: it out. You know, I'm still trying to figure it out.
- 31:23Speaker 1: I don't know what there is. It's just like you
- 31:25Speaker 1: just gotta keep going at it. And the more you're
- 31:27Speaker 1: exposed to it, the east you're eight kids. How much
- 31:31Speaker 1: of this translates over to your hunts? When you like
- 31:34Speaker 1: the things, you're working to get your mind right for
- 31:36Speaker 1: your tournaments, how much does that translate to your hunts? Um,
- 31:42Speaker 1: it carries over pretty easy. I actually don't. Um, I
- 31:45Speaker 1: got practice with my hunting bone and get everything dialed in,
- 31:48Speaker 1: but I don't I don't necessarily like train with my
- 31:52Speaker 1: hunting though, I guess, um. And then when it comes
- 31:56Speaker 1: to like shooting a deer or something, that's pretty much
- 32:00Speaker 1: little pilot. I don't have like a certain um formula,
- 32:05Speaker 1: I guess um. One thing that I have always done
- 32:08Speaker 1: over the years is make sure to like, um aim,
- 32:12Speaker 1: like pick your spot, because I've been, you know, my
- 32:14Speaker 1: younger years known to like put all of the pins
- 32:16Speaker 1: on the deer and shoot. That's why I shoot a
- 32:19Speaker 1: single pin now. Um. So yeah, aiming is very critical
- 32:26Speaker 1: because sometimes when you're just so jacked up, you just
- 32:29Speaker 1: kind of like shoot at the deer. So when I
- 32:33Speaker 1: when I draw back, I aim like a very critical
- 32:37Speaker 1: at Okay, I'm gonna hit the deer right here and
- 32:39Speaker 1: then shoot. And then you know most of the time
- 32:41Speaker 1: that that works out unless external and I mean like
- 32:44Speaker 1: this year I did have I wounded. I hit a
- 32:46Speaker 1: deer in the shoulder. Um, I hit a deer high, skimmed,
- 32:50Speaker 1: skimmed its back, So like it does happen. Um, it's
- 32:54Speaker 1: just the fact of hunting. You know, it's you're dealing
- 32:56Speaker 1: with a live animal. But um, how do you handle
- 33:00Speaker 1: the situation like that? Do you being coming from the
- 33:03Speaker 1: level of archery, experience and and and knowledge that you
- 33:08Speaker 1: have when you have a bad shot or when you
- 33:11Speaker 1: have a whatever was that happened? Like that wounded deer.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Do you have some like hyper analysis you do when
- 33:17Speaker 1: you're trying to figure out what do they do wrong?
- 33:18Speaker 1: In my process? Or most of the time, most of
- 33:20Speaker 1: the time I do know, Like I know what happened
- 33:22Speaker 1: for both of them. What happened. So the one dude
- 33:26Speaker 1: I hit in the shoulder, um, he was super alert
- 33:30Speaker 1: and it was sixty five yards, and I said, I'm
- 33:33Speaker 1: gonna hug the shoulder a bunch because I felt like
- 33:37Speaker 1: he was just going to run rather than duck. I
- 33:41Speaker 1: don't know why I thought that, but I was like,
- 33:43Speaker 1: I'm just gonna like hug the shoulder pretty tight. And
- 33:45Speaker 1: I hit right where I was aiming because he didn't move,
- 33:50Speaker 1: So I was like, gosh, dang it. So that that
- 33:52Speaker 1: was it. I don't know why I thought of that.
- 33:54Speaker 1: Right when I drew back, I was like, all right,
- 33:56Speaker 1: put it like right close to shoulder. Um. And then
- 33:59Speaker 1: the other I'm as a mule deer at seventy four
- 34:03Speaker 1: and that one I think was just a misrange because
- 34:07Speaker 1: he was um. There was a couple of branches like
- 34:11Speaker 1: right close to him and around him. So I really
- 34:14Speaker 1: think that I just ranged one of those branches and
- 34:19Speaker 1: it's just a total misrange because the left and right
- 34:21Speaker 1: was pretty good. Do you like after this happens, Yeah,
- 34:26Speaker 1: take a shot of deer. You're trying to recover it.
- 34:28Speaker 1: You don't find it. It's the worst moment for any
- 34:31Speaker 1: hunter just about. All right, I know that feeling unfortunately too. Um,
- 34:36Speaker 1: how do you personally deal with it? Is it? Is
- 34:38Speaker 1: it literally the next day or that day you're sitting
- 34:41Speaker 1: and stewing on this stuff you just told me? Or so,
- 34:44Speaker 1: Like Wyoming was the the shoulder shot one and it
- 34:49Speaker 1: was like a one fifty white tail, like the biggest
- 34:51Speaker 1: white tail I would have killed. And we're sitting on
- 34:56Speaker 1: this edge of a of a alfalfa field and uh,
- 35:00Speaker 1: it's super cool terrain out there. It's like mountains. This
- 35:03Speaker 1: is like meal deer country, and then in the bottoms
- 35:05Speaker 1: was white tail country. So we're sitting sitting on the
- 35:07Speaker 1: edge just like watching this field and it's like it's
- 35:10Speaker 1: getting twilight, you know, it's like twenty minutes left of
- 35:13Speaker 1: shooting light, and this buck pops out like four yards away,
- 35:17Speaker 1: So we all look at each other and we're like,
- 35:19Speaker 1: we gotta go. So we ran like a mile. It
- 35:24Speaker 1: was at least a mile in this ditch. Like we
- 35:28Speaker 1: ran probably like in fifteen minutes, you know, all the
- 35:31Speaker 1: way around and luckily there was this ditch all the
- 35:34Speaker 1: way around this field, and we got to the point
- 35:39Speaker 1: where like we popped up. We popped up a couple
- 35:40Speaker 1: of times, but we got to the point where he
- 35:42Speaker 1: was and we popped up and he was right there
- 35:44Speaker 1: at you know whatever. I think it was sixty I
- 35:50Speaker 1: forget it's in the video, but arranged it, drew back,
- 35:55Speaker 1: stood up, and he was just looking at me and
- 35:57Speaker 1: I shot um. So, yeah, that eat me up a
- 36:00Speaker 1: lot because I hit him the shoulder. We went and
- 36:03Speaker 1: found the arrow. There was like zero penetration um, which
- 36:07Speaker 1: pros and cons of expandable broadheads. I was shooting expandable
- 36:10Speaker 1: broadhead with pounds and a five fifty graine arrow, and
- 36:14Speaker 1: I had a half inch of penetration. Yeah. So we
- 36:19Speaker 1: followed blood for three d yards and he started doing
- 36:23Speaker 1: circles and we were pretty sure we were like following
- 36:25Speaker 1: him around. But the problem is that we had a schedule,
- 36:28Speaker 1: so we had to go to Nebraska the next day,
- 36:31Speaker 1: like like the next day or no, We're going to
- 36:33Speaker 1: drive through the night and get there in the morning.
- 36:35Speaker 1: That's what we're gonna do. So we decided shoulder shot,
- 36:39Speaker 1: he's probably going to live and be all right. So
- 36:42Speaker 1: we backed out. Well, we ended up finishing our Western
- 36:46Speaker 1: tour like a half a day early, and we were
- 36:49Speaker 1: only like eight hours away from Wyoming still, so we
- 36:53Speaker 1: actually drove all the way back to Wyoming and we
- 36:57Speaker 1: looked for another half day and we didn't find anything.
- 37:00Speaker 1: No more blood, no more no more anything. But we
- 37:03Speaker 1: went We spent an extra eight hours of driving to
- 37:06Speaker 1: go back to look just for you know, for my
- 37:09Speaker 1: mind really, because my mind was just thinking the entire
- 37:12Speaker 1: time in the next two states. So, yeah, that's good.
- 37:17Speaker 1: That's hard to that's just that's never easy no matter
- 37:21Speaker 1: way anyway look at it. Yeah, especially when it was
- 37:23Speaker 1: my fault for like, you know, if I do it
- 37:26Speaker 1: was aiming two inches further back, it would be dead,
- 37:28Speaker 1: do you do you I know, like talking to other
- 37:33Speaker 1: buddies or even in my own situation, I've I've dealt
- 37:37Speaker 1: with this a little bit differently in different cases. There's
- 37:39Speaker 1: there was one time I hit a deer and wounded it,
- 37:42Speaker 1: and search and search never could recover him. And it
- 37:45Speaker 1: like just took the wind out of my sales and
- 37:47Speaker 1: I didn't want to hunt for like a week. I
- 37:48Speaker 1: was just like, I don't even know if I want
- 37:50Speaker 1: to keep going, and just like just took me out
- 37:52Speaker 1: of the game. And then there's another time depressed. Can
- 37:56Speaker 1: it really can? But then if at other times where
- 37:57Speaker 1: I thought, you know what, you just have to get
- 37:59Speaker 1: right back on the horror and go out the next
- 38:01Speaker 1: day and pound your boat, just like shoot your ball, bunch,
- 38:03Speaker 1: make sure your confidence is there, and then get right
- 38:05Speaker 1: back after it. U what what have you found to
- 38:09Speaker 1: be what works well for you? If you have a
- 38:11Speaker 1: miss or or a bad shot, do you want to
- 38:13Speaker 1: get right back after it? Do you step away? Usually?
- 38:16Speaker 1: What's how do you get your mind right after that
- 38:18Speaker 1: kind of a failure. I guess you could call it.
- 38:21Speaker 1: The past couple of years, I really haven't had a
- 38:23Speaker 1: choice to step away, Like I've always had trips planned
- 38:26Speaker 1: or was on a trip or you know, so it's
- 38:28Speaker 1: like you can't really take a break, you know. So
- 38:32Speaker 1: my go to I I always shoot right after like
- 38:35Speaker 1: a bunch, make sure everything's dialed in, and once I know,
- 38:40Speaker 1: like everything's dialed in and that it was like either
- 38:43Speaker 1: my fault or an external factor. Like as long as
- 38:46Speaker 1: I know what happened, I'm okay. Like as long as
- 38:49Speaker 1: I know, like the deer's gonna live and I know
- 38:51Speaker 1: what happened, then I'm fine. I probably I have no
- 38:54Speaker 1: idea what happened, or it's like I was having a
- 38:56Speaker 1: mental breakdown and like punch a trigger. That's no point though, Um,
- 39:01Speaker 1: Luckily I've never really had to deal with that, um
- 39:05Speaker 1: like hunting, punching the trigger, target panic type stuff, so
- 39:09Speaker 1: I've always been able to figure out the problem and
- 39:12Speaker 1: assess it. Have you ever had that problem in tournament scenarios?
- 39:17Speaker 1: Target panic or anything like that? So there's different forms
- 39:19Speaker 1: of target panic. There's like legit you can't even aim
- 39:22Speaker 1: on the target and you gotta like swing into it
- 39:24Speaker 1: and punch a trigger, which is like very common, like
- 39:27Speaker 1: you hang high and then you swing down and shoot
- 39:29Speaker 1: into it. And then there's like performance target panic where
- 39:34Speaker 1: you you can't aim quite at the middle, but you
- 39:38Speaker 1: can aim like a half inch or an inch below it,
- 39:40Speaker 1: no problem. And when you say you can't aim it that,
- 39:42Speaker 1: do you mean you just get kind of stuck there.
- 39:44Speaker 1: Get stuck. Yeah, you can't like but but in practice,
- 39:49Speaker 1: so this happens a lot of tournament archers deal with this.
- 39:51Speaker 1: It's very very slight target panic that can be fixed,
- 39:54Speaker 1: you know, like in a weekend of training most of
- 39:58Speaker 1: the time. Um, but practice as you can aim the middle,
- 40:00Speaker 1: you can shoot in the middle, it doesn't matter, like
- 40:02Speaker 1: middle doesn't matter. Show up to a tournament, you hang
- 40:05Speaker 1: an inch low because now you have this performance pressure
- 40:09Speaker 1: and you're like, you're scared of the middle. Essentially, you
- 40:12Speaker 1: don't you don't want to perform. Well, you're telling yourself,
- 40:15Speaker 1: I'm not gonna you know, you're scared of the performance.
- 40:17Speaker 1: You're scared of the first place trophy, you're scared of
- 40:20Speaker 1: the fans, you're scared of the check. Like, so you
- 40:23Speaker 1: just like hang an inch low and you just move
- 40:26Speaker 1: your site so you can do that. And so I've
- 40:29Speaker 1: experienced that before. Um, but I've never experienced like just
- 40:33Speaker 1: crazy target panic. Luckily, now back on that, I'm kind
- 40:38Speaker 1: of jumping around here, but you keep on popping these
- 40:41Speaker 1: different ideas in my mind. So back on the tournament side,
- 40:44Speaker 1: you describe that performance anxiety of sorts that you've you've
- 40:47Speaker 1: had maybe a little bit of at times, what do
- 40:50Speaker 1: you think is And maybe you don't know, but if
- 40:55Speaker 1: you if someone had a gun to your head and said, hey, Chris,
- 40:58Speaker 1: what is the hurdle that you need to get over
- 41:01Speaker 1: to to take this thing to the next level to
- 41:03Speaker 1: get where you want to be? What's the one thing
- 41:05Speaker 1: like you've got a crush or the one thing that
- 41:06Speaker 1: you've got to fix or what's holding you back? I
- 41:10Speaker 1: think it's time. We've had many, many late night tournament
- 41:16Speaker 1: over a glass of line conversations on this, like probably
- 41:19Speaker 1: too many to think of, and um, you always when
- 41:24Speaker 1: you want to analyze it, every major pro most there
- 41:28Speaker 1: are some like wonder childs, but most of the major
- 41:32Speaker 1: pros um rise right around twenty seven to thirty years old.
- 41:40Speaker 1: And in life, most of the time right around that age,
- 41:44Speaker 1: you either um, you're done with college, you may or
- 41:49Speaker 1: may not be married, but most of the time you're
- 41:51Speaker 1: like in some sort of like solid relationship, you have
- 41:54Speaker 1: some sort of solid income, and you have your life
- 41:57Speaker 1: a little bit more figured out. So in that part
- 42:00Speaker 1: of your life when you're like a decent pro but
- 42:05Speaker 1: you're not winning enough and don't have enough sponsors to
- 42:09Speaker 1: make it your living. You really don't care as much
- 42:14Speaker 1: how you perform, therefore you perform better. You know. Right now,
- 42:21Speaker 1: I understand that if I win Vegas, I can pay
- 42:23Speaker 1: off student loans and and get a really good kickstart.
- 42:27Speaker 1: So I'm thinking about that when you're when you're a
- 42:30Speaker 1: little bit farther down the line, emerging into it. Like
- 42:35Speaker 1: I'm talking, I'm not talking about like the professionals that
- 42:37Speaker 1: are established and everything, talking about like guys in my
- 42:40Speaker 1: situation five years from now that are a little bit
- 42:43Speaker 1: more you know, on a foundation. You know, they really
- 42:46Speaker 1: don't really don't care, you know how they do, but
- 42:49Speaker 1: it's it's different. So I think, Um, for my personal situation,
- 42:56Speaker 1: I either need to let time deal with that and
- 43:00Speaker 1: sure I'll like progress and do well from now until then,
- 43:03Speaker 1: but I really won't be fully archery mature until then,
- 43:07Speaker 1: or I need a you know, have that mindset now
- 43:10Speaker 1: and just understand that. But it's easier said than done. Yeah,
- 43:14Speaker 1: how old you? Okay, so you're twenty two and you're talking.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Seven to thirty is when a lot of people hit
- 43:21Speaker 1: their stride. Um, all right, So paint me a picture
- 43:26Speaker 1: when you're so five years from now, what's your what
- 43:32Speaker 1: are you gonna be doing? What's what's your life like?
- 43:35Speaker 1: Yourn tell me what that goal is. I don't know.
- 43:38Speaker 1: I have some goals, but cheese, Hey man, you know
- 43:42Speaker 1: what you're getting into when you came on here. I mean,
- 43:45Speaker 1: I don't know right now. I mean the past couple
- 43:47Speaker 1: of years has been pretty awesome. I've been able to
- 43:49Speaker 1: turn this into like my full time job, so I'm
- 43:52Speaker 1: I'm pretty stoked about that. Um. So the next five years, UM,
- 43:57Speaker 1: the plan is to grow everything and continue and whatever
- 44:02Speaker 1: opportunities arise arise because of it. Um. I started my
- 44:07Speaker 1: YouTube channel when I was young, like thirteen fourteen, but
- 44:12Speaker 1: everything around my YouTube I've spurred so many new opportunities,
- 44:16Speaker 1: Like YouTube has always been my my pillar of growth essentially.
- 44:21Speaker 1: So I don't know. I I see myself, UM definitely
- 44:24Speaker 1: still shooting, um a bunch. I mean, I just love
- 44:27Speaker 1: to shoot, So I don't really see myself stopping, um,
- 44:31Speaker 1: especially this year. There have been times in the past. Um, really,
- 44:36Speaker 1: like two or three years ago, I thought about stopping
- 44:38Speaker 1: shooting and just like hunting and stuff. For this past year,
- 44:41Speaker 1: I really hammered down and uh, I really loved shooting again,
- 44:45Speaker 1: so I'm super jacked about that. UM, So definitely going
- 44:48Speaker 1: to continue shooting. UM. I love working um on the
- 44:52Speaker 1: business side of things UM, like my own stuff and
- 44:56Speaker 1: helping out ultraView Archery I do. I help out quite
- 44:59Speaker 1: a bit them Colby Hanley who owns it, it's like
- 45:02Speaker 1: one of my best friends. So we're always um working
- 45:05Speaker 1: on stuff and collaborating. So I definitely see myself diving
- 45:09Speaker 1: in more, more and more and more into the business
- 45:11Speaker 1: side of things UM, hopefully growing YouTube channel beyond. I
- 45:17Speaker 1: mean right now we're kind of projected by the end
- 45:20Speaker 1: of summer to reach a u K subscribers, so that
- 45:23Speaker 1: would be rad UM. So yeah, you never know. I
- 45:26Speaker 1: don't know. I really don't have a game plan. It's
- 45:28Speaker 1: a thing. I just kind of like know what I
- 45:31Speaker 1: have to do like today and tomorrow and that's about
- 45:33Speaker 1: it and this end vision. But I don't have like
- 45:37Speaker 1: a you know, solid solid plan right now. Anyways, So
- 45:44Speaker 1: you're doing this full time. You're filling your hunts for YouTube,
- 45:48Speaker 1: you're vlogging, your showcasing, your your tournaments, all these different things,
- 45:52Speaker 1: and you're also you know, participating these tournaments and and
- 45:56Speaker 1: all that is this it's kind of a dream job
- 45:59Speaker 1: for a lot of people. Right, yeah, it's pretty close
- 46:02Speaker 1: to dream drive for you probably then, right, yeah, dream job.
- 46:05Speaker 1: I didn't know that was a dream. Just kind of
- 46:07Speaker 1: like it just kind of like happened. It's crazy, but yeah,
- 46:12Speaker 1: it's funny. Though you talked earlier how there's this sense
- 46:15Speaker 1: of added pressure once you start and I once you
- 46:20Speaker 1: start kind of getting this thing. And I've definitely felt
- 46:22Speaker 1: this too when I started building my platform my audience. Um,
- 46:26Speaker 1: I all of a sudden felt this whole new pressure
- 46:28Speaker 1: around everything I was doing. And if I you know,
- 46:30Speaker 1: if I didn't had the success in the field that
- 46:32Speaker 1: I thought I was supposed to, I feel like I
- 46:34Speaker 1: was a failure or that I was letting people down.
- 46:36Speaker 1: People would like I think I'm an idiot or or
- 46:39Speaker 1: not worth you know, listening to or whatever. So I know, yeah, yeah,
- 46:45Speaker 1: I know what you're going through there. Um, but it's
- 46:48Speaker 1: it's some days you're like, oh, man, this this almost
- 46:52Speaker 1: takes some of the fun out of this thing that
- 46:54Speaker 1: used to be just a fun thing to do. Um
- 46:56Speaker 1: when it becomes a job. But then at the same
- 46:59Speaker 1: time to pinch my self and remind myself, man, you know,
- 47:02Speaker 1: don't ever lose the fun. Don't ever let that happen
- 47:04Speaker 1: because standard nine to five, you know, doing it on
- 47:07Speaker 1: the weekends, it could be way worse. Um, so there's
- 47:10Speaker 1: definitely catch twenty two there. But yeah, and I'm I'm
- 47:14Speaker 1: managing that. I'm trying to figure that out, you know,
- 47:16Speaker 1: navigating it. But it's been good. It's been fun. It's
- 47:21Speaker 1: this year, or you can keep going, we can dive in.
- 47:25Speaker 1: I have so much I want to touch on real
- 47:27Speaker 1: quick about this hunting season because it was crazy, but well, yeah,
- 47:30Speaker 1: I mean this, this is a nice segment and because
- 47:33Speaker 1: it's funny. Um, you're twenty two, I'm thirty two, and uh,
- 47:39Speaker 1: as I was telling you before we started recording this,
- 47:42Speaker 1: watching your season last year, I just was really jealous.
- 47:47Speaker 1: And then it's it's weird. I shouldn't be jealous because
- 47:49Speaker 1: I have my dream job. I'm super lucky to be
- 47:51Speaker 1: able to make a living in this industry of this
- 47:54Speaker 1: world too. Um, but you know, I have certain obligations
- 47:59Speaker 1: that keep me from doing a whole bunch of the
- 48:01Speaker 1: crazy stuff you're doing, which is awesome, and I wouldn't
- 48:03Speaker 1: trade what I've got. I'm very, very thankful for for
- 48:05Speaker 1: everything I've got going on my life and my family
- 48:07Speaker 1: and everything. But I do wish that when I was
- 48:09Speaker 1: twenty two, I would have taken off on a season
- 48:13Speaker 1: like you did in ten and uh and just just
- 48:18Speaker 1: looks like you had a hell of a good time. Man.
- 48:20Speaker 1: So so at some point I've got a couple more
- 48:24Speaker 1: archer questions that I'm probably gonna circle back to. But
- 48:27Speaker 1: on the twenty hunting season, first line up, like, give
- 48:31Speaker 1: us the high level, thirty ft overview of everything you
- 48:34Speaker 1: did in and then I want to dive into some
- 48:37Speaker 1: of the specifics. But we first got to understand the
- 48:39Speaker 1: scale of this epic tour of the country. Two thousand nineteen,
- 48:43Speaker 1: I decided I was going to spend all of my
- 48:45Speaker 1: money and go everywhere pretty much. So I pretty much
- 48:49Speaker 1: went all out, went to eleven states. I had twelve
- 48:53Speaker 1: buck tags and my goal was twelve bucks because Levi
- 48:59Speaker 1: Morgans out twelve bucks last year. I was like, who
- 49:03Speaker 1: you know, and and this this is a touchy subject
- 49:06Speaker 1: to It's like how many deer can you actually shoot?
- 49:09Speaker 1: And it becomes unethical. That has been like that has
- 49:12Speaker 1: been a turning thing in my mind. But anyway, said,
- 49:14Speaker 1: we can talk about that later. Yeah. Um, so I
- 49:19Speaker 1: started in Alaska in August shout at Cariboo total d.
- 49:23Speaker 1: I y met these guys who are Archie tournament. They
- 49:26Speaker 1: invited me out, barely have spent more than thirty minutes
- 49:30Speaker 1: talking to them before, and I just totally went up there.
- 49:33Speaker 1: We spent twenty four hours together, driving up all the
- 49:36Speaker 1: way to nearly Prude obey Us over the calendar Caribou Tag.
- 49:41Speaker 1: Spent eleven days out there. Shot one um, other guys
- 49:45Speaker 1: almost shot a couple. We flung a couple of arrows.
- 49:48Speaker 1: They're really hard, especially especially out there. The way we're
- 49:52Speaker 1: doing it. It's like the wild West. Yeah, the Hall Road.
- 49:55Speaker 1: I definitely want to hear more about that. The Hall Road.
- 49:59Speaker 1: It is the I did quite a bit of research before,
- 50:01Speaker 1: and one guy explained it as the budget friendly Alaskan
- 50:07Speaker 1: dream hunt, like anyone could do it. I think I
- 50:10Speaker 1: spent two grand doing that, so it's not too bad,
- 50:15Speaker 1: um for the Alaskan hunt. So that was rat that.
- 50:19Speaker 1: I definitely would do that again. Um, it was fun.
- 50:23Speaker 1: It was a fun time. You saw incredible things. We
- 50:26Speaker 1: saw muskox Um Cariboo. Obviously, we saw a grizzly bear. Um,
- 50:31Speaker 1: and you're you're in Alaska, like you know, like there's
- 50:35Speaker 1: no joke. Yeah, Like sure, we were on the Hall
- 50:38Speaker 1: Road back and forth. Um, and we would we would
- 50:40Speaker 1: run that hundred mile strip like all the time. It
- 50:44Speaker 1: was intense. So so I looked into doing that hunt.
- 50:48Speaker 1: At one point a handful of years ago, I was
- 50:50Speaker 1: doing a bunch of research and reading and uh and yes,
- 50:53Speaker 1: it sounds like it's a heck of a great budget opportunity.
- 50:55Speaker 1: But then I did hear from some people saying that
- 50:57Speaker 1: it can just be like a ship show with all
- 51:00Speaker 1: sorts of people if they migrations crossing the road, everyone's
- 51:03Speaker 1: in the same place and it's hard to get away
- 51:05Speaker 1: from other people. Is that that's true? It can be,
- 51:08Speaker 1: it can and it can't. So we had we went
- 51:10Speaker 1: the week after opening week, um, and I think opening
- 51:15Speaker 1: week was a little more busy, but we probably only
- 51:18Speaker 1: saw twenty trucks the entire time. Um. But the thing
- 51:24Speaker 1: is is where the caribou are the people are, so
- 51:27Speaker 1: like there was one time three big bowls in the group.
- 51:31Speaker 1: We found them first because we were just driving, and
- 51:33Speaker 1: then like, oh, there they are, you know, four yards
- 51:36Speaker 1: off the road. So we parked, and uh, in the
- 51:38Speaker 1: way the hall road is five miles on each side
- 51:41Speaker 1: is archery only like from the ditch. From the ditch
- 51:43Speaker 1: five miles you just can't shoot them like standing on
- 51:45Speaker 1: the road. And so we run after these cariboo. We
- 51:50Speaker 1: get all set up there, feeding towards us like it
- 51:52Speaker 1: was gonna work, Like it was just gonna work. We
- 51:54Speaker 1: were each huddled down to like this rock because it's flat,
- 51:57Speaker 1: so there's like this little rock and we're huddled next
- 52:00Speaker 1: to it. And then sure enough, a freaking diesel comes
- 52:02Speaker 1: strolling up parks just running, so they're all looking at it,
- 52:06Speaker 1: and then another truck pulls up and they're like get
- 52:08Speaker 1: out and they're looking at them, and then they run
- 52:10Speaker 1: around or they turn around and run back and they
- 52:14Speaker 1: try to swing around and then they all spook, you know.
- 52:17Speaker 1: So it's it is. It is kind of challenging. And
- 52:19Speaker 1: even the one that I shot um we saw from
- 52:24Speaker 1: like three quarters of a mile away. I have no
- 52:26Speaker 1: idea how we saw it, um, And we started hiking
- 52:29Speaker 1: after it, and before we knew it, we looked back
- 52:32Speaker 1: behind us and there's two guys up on the mountain
- 52:34Speaker 1: like back behind us, and we're like great, but we
- 52:37Speaker 1: were in this I talked talked about it pretty blatant
- 52:41Speaker 1: in the video, but I'm like, yeah, I think we
- 52:42Speaker 1: saw them first, and I think we're ahead of them.
- 52:45Speaker 1: So I was like, we'll just keep going and if
- 52:46Speaker 1: we run into them, then we run into them. But
- 52:48Speaker 1: we were clearly after the same one. So we go
- 52:52Speaker 1: and we get in the position and we're like, yeah,
- 52:54Speaker 1: they're still like, you know, three yards away or so,
- 52:56Speaker 1: it's like we're gonna try to kill him. So we
- 53:00Speaker 1: we dived down around this little Luckily we had some terrain,
- 53:02Speaker 1: so we worked around this terrain and uh get to her.
- 53:05Speaker 1: Maybe he was about a hundred yards away, and it
- 53:06Speaker 1: peeked over and he wasn't there, so you can't really
- 53:11Speaker 1: see it in the video, but he actually got spooked
- 53:15Speaker 1: by the other hunters that swirled around. So those guys
- 53:18Speaker 1: actually did us a favor, and the bull ran straight
- 53:21Speaker 1: towards us on top of me like thirty yards, like
- 53:25Speaker 1: right on the little it was just like a little
- 53:28Speaker 1: hill that he was on. And this isn't on video,
- 53:31Speaker 1: but I actually drew back on it at like thirty
- 53:34Speaker 1: yards and I looked at the camera and my buddy
- 53:38Speaker 1: I was filming and he wasn't filming. I was on
- 53:41Speaker 1: his heart, like, oh my gosh, like I could just
- 53:43Speaker 1: smoke him right now. And I was waiting for him
- 53:46Speaker 1: to get the camera, and I let him walk right by.
- 53:49Speaker 1: So then I let down and he runs right by
- 53:51Speaker 1: my buddy with the camera like right by him, like
- 53:54Speaker 1: ten yards, and then I run over to him and
- 53:56Speaker 1: circle around and then he starts videoing and the deal
- 54:00Speaker 1: and I whipped and missed the shot at like fifty
- 54:04Speaker 1: because he was moving around and my range was wrong.
- 54:07Speaker 1: Those cariboo never stopped ever ever stop. It's they're always moving. Um.
- 54:12Speaker 1: So then I quickly reloaded and by the time the
- 54:14Speaker 1: cariboo knew what was up, he had an arrow sticking
- 54:17Speaker 1: in him. And uh then he ran to a hundred
- 54:20Speaker 1: and he was just like wobbling there at a hundred,
- 54:23Speaker 1: and I ranged him and smoked him and he dropped.
- 54:26Speaker 1: So that's how that happened. Yeah, that was I saw
- 54:31Speaker 1: part of that of that hunt up until you got
- 54:33Speaker 1: the shot. And that was pretty crazy. Um. And that terrain,
- 54:36Speaker 1: I mean you just yeah, it's flat's why open, but
- 54:40Speaker 1: huge vistas, I mean beautiful in its own kind of
- 54:43Speaker 1: stark way. Um. I mean it's it's hard to beat
- 54:47Speaker 1: Alaska as far as the experience. Yeah, I totally recommend it.
- 54:51Speaker 1: And there's ways you can like rent vehicles in uh
- 54:56Speaker 1: not Anchorage. What's what's the one just Fairbanks? Fair Banks? Yeah,
- 54:59Speaker 1: you can in fair Banks. You can fly into fair Banks.
- 55:01Speaker 1: We're in a vehicle drive up. But the buddies I
- 55:05Speaker 1: knew lived in Anchorage, so I drove all the way
- 55:07Speaker 1: from Anchorage. That was all. So first Alaska trip, right, yeah,
- 55:14Speaker 1: my first big, like big adventure type trip. One out
- 55:19Speaker 1: of ten rating? Did it? Did it hit ten to
- 55:21Speaker 1: hit your expectations or what? Nine? Nine, eight or nine?
- 55:26Speaker 1: We were thinking we'd see more caribou, and but that's
- 55:30Speaker 1: hit or miss with the migration, you know. Yes, I
- 55:33Speaker 1: don't mean to make you jealous, but on my caribou hunt,
- 55:36Speaker 1: I probably saw ten thousand. Yeah we saw uh no,
- 55:41Speaker 1: but that's still pretty cool man. Still it was cool. Yeah,
- 55:45Speaker 1: So yeah, what happened next? Then we went to Kentucky
- 55:49Speaker 1: early season in September. Um. I brought little Cooper with me.
- 55:54Speaker 1: We always go on a hunt every year. That was
- 55:55Speaker 1: kind of a bust um. And then we went to
- 55:59Speaker 1: oh then we into Texas, shot a pig out of
- 56:02Speaker 1: a helicopter that was pretty rad with the bow, and uh,
- 56:06Speaker 1: then we went to then we hit the Western Tour.
- 56:09Speaker 1: So the Western Tour UM quickly kind of sponsored it.
- 56:13Speaker 1: Um let us bring out there four by four machine,
- 56:16Speaker 1: which was awesome. Um, it was was so rad. Yeah,
- 56:20Speaker 1: we got to talk about that. Yeah, because so you
- 56:24Speaker 1: were going on this multi state Western tour and quickly,
- 56:29Speaker 1: for those who aren't familiar, it's like a big big
- 56:32Speaker 1: camper van or big conversion van that was tripped out
- 56:34Speaker 1: for this kind of thing. Can you walk us through
- 56:36Speaker 1: what that van setup was? Yeah, So it was two
- 56:40Speaker 1: bunk beds that flipped down on the side so you
- 56:42Speaker 1: can put them up for storage or travel or whatever.
- 56:46Speaker 1: And uh there was four seats so driver, passenger, and
- 56:49Speaker 1: then like a half row in the back and then
- 56:52Speaker 1: there's like a bunch of storage. Um. There are solar
- 56:54Speaker 1: panels on the top. So the whole thing was power
- 56:56Speaker 1: like the van didn't need to be on and like
- 56:59Speaker 1: power like we ran a microwave like you could, you
- 57:01Speaker 1: could do whatever you wanted. Um. And then we actually
- 57:04Speaker 1: put a sleeper, little sleeper topper on top. Um. So yeah,
- 57:08Speaker 1: it was fully functional for four people, Like, four people
- 57:11Speaker 1: could run out of it, no problem. Um, now quickly
- 57:14Speaker 1: hooked you guys up with that, right, Yeah, do you
- 57:17Speaker 1: have an idea of what it costs to buy something
- 57:20Speaker 1: like that? We did research because we were curious. You
- 57:22Speaker 1: can buy like a stripped out transit van for thirty
- 57:28Speaker 1: thirty like a pretty new one. Um, and then all
- 57:30Speaker 1: the renditions we were thinking were like twenty five grand.
- 57:35Speaker 1: It's not cheap, but not know, not more. But you
- 57:39Speaker 1: buy a brand new truck, you know, I mean, I
- 57:42Speaker 1: don't know. It's not for everyone, but you can also
- 57:45Speaker 1: do it, you know, the budget friendly way. You get
- 57:47Speaker 1: kind of a beater and four by four conversion and
- 57:51Speaker 1: rig it out, you know, and for probably then you
- 57:55Speaker 1: got a sweet hunt and rig that you can live
- 57:56Speaker 1: out of. Now you don't have to pay for hotels
- 57:58Speaker 1: and everything. Yeah, it's it's a really cool way to
- 58:01Speaker 1: do it. I've been very tempted. I've looked at looked
- 58:04Speaker 1: at vans for a while thinking about doing something like
- 58:06Speaker 1: that because I love I love just going on my
- 58:08Speaker 1: hunts and sleeping in the back of my truck and
- 58:10Speaker 1: that works great. But yeah, sometimes wish she had more room. Yeah, yeah,
- 58:15Speaker 1: it was it was cool. So we started. We started
- 58:18Speaker 1: in Wyoming, UM, hunted there for six days. UM. We
- 58:22Speaker 1: tagged out one out of three tags there. Wyoming is rough. Um.
- 58:28Speaker 1: Then we headed to Nebraska. We're three for three on
- 58:32Speaker 1: studs in Nebraska. UM. We hunted there for four days,
- 58:39Speaker 1: shot three And then we went to South Dakota. Hunted
- 58:44Speaker 1: there for a day and we shot two bucks. That
- 58:47Speaker 1: was crazy. How that happened? Back to back, Um, and
- 58:51Speaker 1: then we drove home. So how many days of a
- 58:53Speaker 1: total day? Fourteen days total? You hunted three different states.
- 58:57Speaker 1: You had a bunch of guys, bunch of Yeah, in
- 59:01Speaker 1: every state we like new people were like joining us.
- 59:04Speaker 1: So it was pretty cool. So I gotta believe that
- 59:06Speaker 1: people see these videos on YouTube or they're listening now
- 59:09Speaker 1: and they're wondering, how the heck did you pull it off?
- 59:11Speaker 1: I mean, lots of people go on a Western hunt
- 59:14Speaker 1: and they research and they plan all year, and they've
- 59:16Speaker 1: got one place and they try to find one place
- 59:19Speaker 1: to hunt, and uh, they're happy and lucky if they
- 59:22Speaker 1: get one shot. And you guys hit three states all
- 59:25Speaker 1: these different places. Um? Were these was this public land?
- 59:29Speaker 1: Was a private was it with buddies to do these
- 59:31Speaker 1: places like what was all that? So Wilding was a
- 59:34Speaker 1: buddy's lease. Um, Nebraska is a friend's property. And South
- 59:40Speaker 1: Dakota was walking hunting, Okay, And so there's a little
- 59:44Speaker 1: bit of pre intel on some of these spots and
- 59:46Speaker 1: some figuring out in your own all of them were.
- 59:49Speaker 1: South Dakota was a little bit of intel. Um, some
- 59:51Speaker 1: buddies from Wisconsin we met out there and they hunted
- 59:54Speaker 1: there a year prior. Um when it wasn't like here
- 59:58Speaker 1: they all are, you know, it was like right, we
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: can hunt. You know these chunks or whatever. These chunks
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: we know, Um, Nebraska, Wyoming we know like the back
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: of our hand. Nebraska we know pretty well. Um, so
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: those were like, you know, I'm pretty familiar in South
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: Dakota was totally foreign to us. Which part of the
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: state was that southwest? That was north Northwest. Yeah, it's
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: cool stuff all those three states. What's your favorite Nebraska,
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: but Nebraska or South Dakota. South Dakota was pretty awesome, um,
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: because there's a lot of walk in in public ground
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: and uh, you're getting into like a different kind of
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: Western field. Like Nebraska is probably my favorite, just because
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: we go out with my buddy Tim, and it's just
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: like fun hanging out with Tim and there's like tons
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: of deer um and there's giants like everywhere behind every tree. Yeah,
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: well he's got some sweet pieces of property. Um. Yeah,
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: I don't know. But Wyoming is cool because it's it
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: feels like out west, big mountains. You know, we see elk,
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: we see meal deer, we see everything. But I don't know.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: They all kind of have their own their own deal.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: I hate naming favorites. Everyone's like, what's your favorite state,
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: what's your favorite And I'm like, I don't know. It's
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: like they all kind of have their own own thing
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: that I love about them. Yeah. I understand that you've
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: hunted sounds like a few of these states before Nebraska
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: definitely before wilding before Um, anything that you learned last
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: year on that front, on chasing mule's like that and
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: in some white tail too. Um yeah, come away with
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: any any lessons learned or anything meal deer. We kind
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: of got a formula down for Nebraska. Now. The way
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: that Nebraska is is where we're at there's lots of
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: ad fields and then just like on the edge of
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: an agg field or or like in the middle of it,
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: there's a pasture, it literally goes down like it's like
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: negative space if it looks like almost. So what we'll
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: do is we'll get out there in the morning early
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: and we'll sit on a and it's it's just pretty standard.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: But for Nebraska it's a little different because you can't
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: get like on a mountain and look in the morning,
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: you know. So we'll just get in the pasture somewhere
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: where we can see like kind of the farthest um,
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: and then we'll see them normally drop down in and
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: bed down in the past year and then go through it, um,
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: you know, try to put stock on it or whatever. Um.
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: But the past two years, the same exact thing happened.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: Um my buck last year and my buck this year.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: We're actually just driving around in the truck in the
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: past year because they're all they're literally like cow pastures,
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: and we would bomb accidentally these bucks out of their
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: bed like just driving one place to another and be like, oh, yeah,
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: they're bedded right there there. They go, Okay, let's put
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: a pin right there, And then next morning we would
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: go look over that same spot and they would come
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: back in bed in the same spot. So it was
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: kind of interesting in this year. We didn't bump it
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: hundred percent out of his bed, but we were driving.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: It was, um, just twilight at night. We're just driving
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: back to camp, and we saw this buck just up
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: on the ridge and we're like, he had to have
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: just gotten up out of his bed to go to
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: the go to the fields. So the next morning we
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: set up kind of in that area, just overlooking that
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: whole thing, and sure enough he came down, um just
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: in one of the draws, and that stock took a
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: long time. And another lesson I guess is I've slowed
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: way down. Um, there's a lot of times. You know,
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: this is my fourth year meal der hunting, um, and
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: I don't I'm not a master, or don't know a
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: whole lot, but all I know is you really have
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: to slow down, and you really can't go slow enough
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: if they're bedded. I think I took three hours to
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: go two d yards and uh, because we had to
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: work work these rim edges of these um cuts. Essentially
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: they're not huge cuts, but it was just big enough
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: and just steep enough where like you couldn't see them entirely,
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: so we would me and Bryce. Bryce was like, right,
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: behind me filming. We just worked really slow around these
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: like four um four cut rim edge and finally on
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: the fourth one um we saw him, luckily, and then
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: I worked my way down and shout him at sixty
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: five and so have you you've seen him from across
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: the way. I said, okay, I think he's better there,
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: and then you circle the way around or how did
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: that work? Yeah? So we saw him coming off the
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: cornfield probably four yards away, work down into the cut
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: um and then disappeared. But the thing was is there
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: was these four big cuts that we saw and we're like, well,
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: he could be in anyone really, because he could have
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: just like whazzled around and laid down. And in these cuts,
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: they're like they almost look like, um, we're in Michigan,
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: so you know when there's in the farmer's field and
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: they just planted and it's kind of steep. We got
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: a big rain and it like washes out and that's
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: what it looks like. It looks like a big version
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: of that up. I know exactly what you mean. Yeah,
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: And uh so there was like four of these and
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: we're like, oh, he could be really in anyone. And
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: there's these deep little spots that can bed right around,
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: so we knew he could be in the first one
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: or he could be in the fourth one. So every
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: single one, in every single corner, you just have to
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: act like he's going to be right there. You know,
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: if we just like blew through it and we're like, ah,
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: he's not now, when he's not now, when he's not now,
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: and we would have busted him, you know, he either
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: would have hurt us or something. So he's I don't know.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: In in last year also, um, I slowed way down
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: on my buck because similar thing happened. We watched him
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: come up over this little hillside and dip down into
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: a cut, but we couldn't see down in the cut.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: It's like same Azact situation. So we had to just
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: work the edge super super slow and that probably took
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: an hour. So and another thing it's like in Wyoming,
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: I wish I practice this a little better with patients,
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: is we had one opportunity at a meal deer for
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: six days, like one in solid opportunity, and I kind
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: of like rushed it because I was like it's first morning,
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: Like I just rushed it and I kind of blew
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: the stock. So it was like if I spent like
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: a half a day, like or the whole day just
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: trying to kill this one buck in his spot, we
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: would have killed it, but instead we try to kill
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: him in thirty minutes, and we blew it, you know,
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: and and therefore we wasted six days, you know, or
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: not wasted, but we then spent the next six days
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: going at it. So if I just spent one day
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: or like the half a day trying to just like
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: really ninja in on this block, it would have worked
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: other than going slow? What else do you do to
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: be a ninja when you're stalking at him? Do you
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: do you go as far as like thrown on stocking sacks,
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: taking off your shoes or anything that? How about wind?
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: Did wind play into any of these? How you're dealing
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: with circles or anything like that? What else is going
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: through your mind on that stock? This year, my Nebraska
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: mule deer, it was like dead calm, which sucked because
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: it was super it was dry, It was dead calm,
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: and it was like that grass that follow yellow grass,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: Like every step was just crunchy. So I don't like
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: to take off my boots because one time I took
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: my boots off and like wore my socks to stalk
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: in and well, one you can stop on a cactus
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: and really jack yourself up. Um to the bucks spooked up,
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: but then ran around and stopped, and I could have
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: if I had my boots on, I could have hauled
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: butt around and then got back on them. So if
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: I were to ever um do that, I definitely would
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: wear the moccasin type things. I would never like just
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: do socks. But um, I just go slow, like I'm
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: like slow, I'm talking about like he'll barely touching, and
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: then you feel make sure you're not stop stepping on
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: a stick, and then you like roll your edge of
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: your foot down, make sure nothing's crunching, and then go
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: all the way down and then shift pressure onto that
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: foot and then you do the same thing next week.
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: I mean that's what we did for like three hours straight.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: It gets sucked. But you gotta act like every single
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: little when you're in a situation, like you have to
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: act like every single little thing is gonna be betted behind.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: So maybe that's too much or not, but in those
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: type of situations, all it takes is one little thing,
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: you know, It's just like white, one little thing can
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: jack it up. I think that's why it's so exciting
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: and addicting, because all those little things matter. You just
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: gotta do so on point. Um, So you did fourteen days,
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: you guys days miles. Um, I think we got seven
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: bow kills on film. That's a heck of a haul.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: How How what about gear? What about travel? Um? I
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: gotta believe you came out of this with some favorite
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: gear or some things that just absolutely saved the day
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: or that. Now I'll never I'll never do a hunt
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: like that without this or a little hack you figured
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: out anything like that. Just as far as hunting trips
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: like that, that that stuck out. Yeah, Um, I pretty
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: much wore like the same stuff I run um sick
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: of gear mountain pants pretty much for everything right around
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: like that middle October because it's like just a little
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: cold in the morning, but then it's pretty hot, so
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: that those pants are just killer. Um. And then I
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: talked about this a lot on like my channels, But
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: my favorite jacket and I were like all sick of stuff,
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: not all sick of stuff, but mainly sick of stuff. Um.
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: It's the Kelvin light hoodie that brown. I love that hoodie.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: It's like if people are like, what one piece would
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: you buy if you could only buy one piece, I
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: really think it would be just that one because you
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: can wear it for insulated for white tail, an outer
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: for light tail, because it's pretty quiet and it's fine
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: and all those mornings glassing kind of like in that
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: mid season. It works awesome. And I've shot so many
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: deer wearing that jacket. It's like, definitely might go to
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: um out West. Out there. You definitely need a solid
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: pair of boots. Um. I run kind of tracks their
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: bottom used or got them used and they were good. Um.
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: I really haven't messed with many others, but I think
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: that's pretty common. Everyone says you always need a good
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: pair of boots. You really do? You know, you can't.
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: You can't be chomping around with with whatever unless you're
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: unless you're just a special breed like that. There's a
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: rancher out in Wyoming and he came out hunting with
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: us for a day and he was in the sketchers.
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: It's like, bro, what are you doing? He does it
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: every day, so it's like he's like whatever. Um, yeah,
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: I don't know. There's so much. One one major takeaways
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: every year I bring less like my first my first
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: time out West, I brought so much. And every year
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: I consolidate and consolidate because I brought This year, I
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: brought like recreation and clothes that I never even touched,
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: like I could have, you know, eliminated a whole suitcase
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: pretty much. There's just there's just things every year that
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: I can solivate because you just really don't need it,
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: Like when you're hunting like that, like literally hunted fourteen
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: days straight. All you're doing is hunting. You're not you know,
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: sun up to sundown. We were trying to kill something
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: and you're just not spending a lot of time doing
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: other things. So it's like remembering that for next year
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: and packing wise, you know, really consolidate on things. Do
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: you do you bring any emergency archery repair stuff? Uh? Yeah,
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: very minor stuff. What what would you what would you
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: consider like must have that someone should bring, or or
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: any backup pieces or accessoris or anything like that. Either
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: rather so than like backup pieces, I would um, I
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: would mark on your bow, like your your peep site,
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: either like you measure your peepsite or you put a
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: little sharpie mark on your like where your peep site
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: is on your bow. That is like the number one
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: thing that gets bumped. I missed it here a couple
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: of years ago because my peep site got bombed or
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: moved like slid down the string and missed it low. Um,
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: so that's like the number one thing I would recommend,
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: um peepsite. It's really not falling out. Your rest could
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: get bombed, but you really can't like just throw a
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: new one on. Um, My equipment is pretty hardy. UM.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: I don't even bring like an extra bow. I probably should,
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: especially on a trip like that, especially if I have one. UM.
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: I really don't have too much extra stuff that I
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: bring like that. Um, it's funny you say that both
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: thing I've always had the same thing. I should bring
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: an extra bow. I should bring an extra bow. But
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: then it just comes down to space and wanting to
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: keep it as minimal as possible. And it's like your
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: bow is gonna blow up and it's gonna be like
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: unusable or you're you're gonna be able to like fix
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: it with like whatever you have. Like I think the
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: same way as a tournament. You know, it's like your
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: BA is gonna break to a point where you can't
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: fix it. So you're gonna be screwed or is going
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: to be something super super small that you can fix
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: easy if the bad thing happens, it's just not your day. Yeah, yeah, exactly. Um,
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: what about food after fourteen days on the road, what
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: was learn anything as far as good travel food or
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: how you guys handle that. Yeah. So this year what
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: we did different is actually did pre made meals. So
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: we made like fried rice, a ton of fried rice,
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: made it and uh, and then freezer packed it and
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: froze it and then um, I think I did eight
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: days or nine days of food for that for four
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: people each day. Um, so frozen and then actually did
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: dry ice and a yetie and it kept it frozen
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: for all those eight days. And then we did uh
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: we did mac and cheese micro wave mac and cheese,
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: and then we did because we had a microwave in
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: the quickly. And then we did the super cheap dollar
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: or you can buy like a twenty pack burritos at
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: Walmart for like three dollars. You get a bunch of those,
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: and we actually just like ate those as a d
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: thought warming them up. It kind of sounds like you
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: basically eat on a hunting trip, like I ate during college. Yeah,
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: you know kind of when you when you go to
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: eleven states and spend all of your money, you're still
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: balling on a budget. So yeah, that's awesome. It's very minimal.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: That's the good stuff. Though. Those are sometimes the best
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: meals if you don't anything fancy. It's just what do
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: they say they say, I'm gonna get the phrase wrong,
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: but like exertion is the best spice, Like after a long,
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: hard day of work, it makes the food taste better
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: just by virtue of what happened. Sprinkle sprinkle some dirt
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: on anything, and pretty much needed at that point. Our
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: best meal was in South Dakota. We finally had like
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: we finished early in the day, so we had like
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: a couple all hours at the end and we cooked
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: up some back straps for everyone, and we had six
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: people in camp. That was the biggest camp, so that
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: was really cool. We had. We had a good time
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: right at the end. Yeah, that trip was literally more
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: sun up to sundown, fourteen days straight of hunting. It
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: was so intense, and like when we were in Wyoming
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: it was like ten miles a day, twelve miles a day.
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: Nebraska was a little bit more laid back and then
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: I think in South Dakota the one day we hunted,
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: we did like fourteen miles in a day. Would you
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: do would you do a trip like that again? Yeah? Yeah,
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: we're planning one. Um this year it's gonna be a
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: little different. Um, it's gonna have an elk hunt in it,
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: hopefully so. But three states probably the same amount of time,
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: right around the same time frame. Anything you do differently
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: logistically or planning or anything like that. Looking looking forward
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: towards your next hunt, specifically for the Western tour, maybe
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: pick spots that are a little closer together, know, like
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: find find the Golden Triangle, you know of of three
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: states or something. If you're gonna hit up states or
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: two states, you know, if you want to hit up
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: two states, you know, you go on right on the
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: border of one and then just jump across like two
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: over the counter states. Um, maybe do that because like
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: some our spons for like twelve hours apart. It's funny
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: bring that up because it also brings up another thing
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: that I've sometimes debated internally, and I've kind of been
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: forced to pull back on this a little bit, just
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: with you know, stuff that goes on family and everything.
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: But I sometimes have debated in past years if it
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: makes more sense to hunt a bunch of different states
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: but be bounding in place to place and have time limits, um,
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: or do you want to just focus on a couple.
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: So that's super interesting you say that, because that's my
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: focus for this year, So explain that. What do you mean?
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: Which way? So like this year, we had three to
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: five days in each state and it was hard. Like
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: in most of these places, like Western Toil we had
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: a little bit. But at these places like Ohio, Iowa, um,
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: West Virginia, like all the other places I went, no
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: previous experience, so we're just like showing up and we'll
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: be like, all right, how do we kill a deer?
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: You know? Pretty much. And we had three to three
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: to four days, three or five days, sometimes two days
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: to figure it out, and it was just draining and
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: it was hard. So this year we're narrowing it down.
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: I think I'm only going to five or six, which
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: is still a lot, but compared to eleven, which was
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: a lot. UM, narrow it down, spend more time, you know,
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: try to um essentially, try to kill some bigger dear,
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: you know, because my goal this year was like if
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: it gets me pumping a little bit and it's like
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: a good solid bock, I'll shoot it. Like I shot
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: you know, a couple of two year olds and whatever.
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: And I did that just for the adventure, you know,
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: go somewhere trying to figure it out. Shoot you dear
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: you know, that was my goal, which was awesome. Yeah.
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: This year, I don't know, Like I'm hopefully going to
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: draw in Kansas this year, UM, so I'll probably spend
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: you know, a solid seven eight days planned for Kansas, um,
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: you know, just to spend some time out there. So
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: I don't know, it's it's uh, that has been a
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: very um hot topic lately, especially talking with Bryce. We've
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: been like strategizing on on that. So I don't know,
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: spend some more time in Michigan. I spent so much
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: time in Michigan preparing food plots and everything, and it's
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: like I'm always gone, So it's like I don't really
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: get to hunt it. Yeah, you gotta gotta give the
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: homestakes some love, yeah, I know. And it's like it's
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: the most challenging of all of them almost in my opinion. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: I certainly feel the same way. It's my buddy Dan Johnson,
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: who's on the podcast a lot with me Liz in
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: Iowa and tell him that for years and finally he's
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: gonna come and hunt Michigan this year, so he'll finally
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: get to see what we're talking about. It's probably not
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: gonna hunt it again, No, probably not so once in
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: a lifetime. Thank I'm actually really impressed you guys. Shout
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: back on the back forty. It was just it was
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: touching go there for a while, man, just because I
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: know how it goes. Yeah, it can be. It can
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: be tough. But managed to find a few ever once
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: in a while. So gonna work for him, that's for sure.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: So so you hunted, You hunted a whole bunch of
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: white tail states last year, Like you just said, um,
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: without taking another hour and going through every single one
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: of those and talking to your ear off, was there
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: anything that stood out across all of those as far
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: as the most interesting or maybe not even that, but
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: is there any hunt that sticks with you like you
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: look back on it and you think to yourself, oh man,
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: that changed how I look at stuff, or that was
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: a huge screw up. I'll never do that again. Anything
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: like that that stands out from your white talents. So Ohio,
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: first time hunting in Ohio. Had some buddies that I
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: met actually from Michigan invited me down and they have
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: a couple of permission on some farms. Pretty awesome farms
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: down there. But Ohio is different, Like there's not a
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: lot of deer. Um, Like, we probably only saw ten
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: deer in four days of hunting, and uh, but their quality, dear,
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: like your opportunity to see a big one is a
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: lot higher, you know, per dear um. So that was
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: super interesting. Um. Kind of changed my perspective on things
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: because a lot of times um and even even in now,
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: thinking of Michigan and other spots, we we try to
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: hunt like where the deer are, like where a lot
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: of deer are, and maybe not necessarily all the time,
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: where the big bucks are, you know. So it's like
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: sitting in spots where like, all right, you might not
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: see a deer today, but when you do, it's going
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: to be a good one, you know. I feel like
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: a lot of times we get we get cat up
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: in and wanting to see a lot of deer because
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: like there's spots in Michigan on the farm that we managed,
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: but It's like if you see forty deer in a night,
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: and you'll see a two year old and a bunch
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: of one year olds, but if you sat here, you
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: might only see three deer. But the chances are a
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: lot more. So I don't I get caught up in
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: that a lot. I feel like, yeah, that's a great point.
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: And I feel like a lot of people do you know?
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: So that's a big shift going from hunting any deer
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: to hunting the Yeah it is, and uh, you know,
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: I I've done it, like I've grind it out and
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: I try to shoot big deer and I've shot I'm
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: not having shot like a big deer in Michigan, um,
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: but I've shot a lot of like a hundred and
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: ten inch deer, which I feel like it is a
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: hundred and sixty inch deer in Island. It's a different thing. Yeah,
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: I you know, somewhat figured something out. But yeah, I
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: don't know that. That made me kind of open my
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: eyes on that a little bit. UM. And then I
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: go to I've been to Louisiana at the past three years, UM,
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: and that's totally different hunting down there. It's a it's
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: a really awesome private chunk. It's like a hunt camp
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: essentially and a buddy through archery. Austin. He he invited
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: me down the past three years, and it's just like
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: it's just totally different the deer. Like you go hunting now,
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: like kind of like East coast West Virginia hunting, you know, Iowa, Michigan, Louisiana.
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: You learn a lot about deer just by doing that.
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: You know, the different types, the way they react to things.
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: You know, like Louisiana, we can drive a buggy, dump
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: a pile of corn, go back and there's deer on
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: it right away. If you did that in Michigan, if
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: you did that like any other place, you would never
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: kill a deer ever. You know. It's just like I
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: don't know, super eye opening, just the different types of
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: deer behaviors, how they do things. I don't know. So
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: what else is on the on the gauntlet for then?
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: Kansas miss again? Which other states? Um? You got to do?
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: Like the only reason why Western Tour worked is because
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: like I had somewhat of a game plan and deadlines
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: and strategy. So Kansas, UM, I'd like to make it
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: back to South Dakota, UM, Nebraska for sure, hunting with Tim.
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: Just like to go hang out with him, to hunt
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: of him. It's awesome. Um, Elk is probably gonna be
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: in Colorado. UM, I got some buddies out there that
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: I'll probably tag along with. UM. Other than that, it's
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: like the four for the four states, and then Michigan
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: for sure. UM, I might dabble with Indiana this year
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: because it's close and I probably sit down there a
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: couple of weekends try to figure something out. UM sleeper state.
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: It is a sleeper state, and uh, yeah, I don't know,
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: but yeah, I'm I'm I might add I probably will
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: add one more. I'll go to Louisiana hopefully again this
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: year for sure. UM that's always a grand slam at
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: the end because because there's so many deer and it's awesome.
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: Um we go in January or right at the beginning
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: of January end of December because that's when their rud is.
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: But yeah, I really want to hang around like that
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: six six states this year, just so I can spend
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: more time, maybe multiple trips back, um, I don't know,
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: and then documenting that I'm not a cent sure how
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: I'm going to do it this year if I want
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: to do it a day by day or a state
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: series or what um kind of depends on capacity, on
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: how fast we can get things turned around or whatnot.
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: That's no easy task, that's for sure. People want content yesterday,
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: they don't want it tomorrow. That's true. That's true. Um Man.
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: It sounds like a fun, fun schedule ahead of You
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: got a good year planned out. Um So with all
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: those hunts coming up, you've got pressure on you to
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: have successful hunts. You're you've got a lot of people
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: watching you now. You of course are doing things on
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: the tournament side as well. What I want to know
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: is we wrap this up, is what are you doing
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: right now from an archery side to make sure you're
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: ready for all that stuff later in the year. Because
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: because a lot of people are locked down right now,
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: we kind of kind of lead with us early on
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: and then I kind of forgot to dive into it.
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: There's a lot of people right now that probably have
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: a little more time on their hands at home to
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: be dialing in on the archery side, maybe earlier than
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: they usually do. What what are you doing and what
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: are some things that some other ideas for people to
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: really crank up their archery practice right now and do
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: it in an intentional, thoughtful quality way. Um, since there's
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: nothing better to do. Yeah, for real, right now? Is
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: it this springtime? I feel like for me, it's always
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: a good time to mess with the different equipment. Um,
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: if it's like equipment you already have, you're just gonna
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: tweak around, or you know, maybe getting like a different
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: set of arrows and messing around with that. Now it's
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: just a great time to mess with the equipment because
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: they're far away from season other other than Turkey season,
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: if you're gonna trying to shoot them with the bow,
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: but we're far enough away from season, or do you
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: feel like mess with stuff and tinker around, um, and
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: now it's a good time. Um. I normally get my bows,
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: my hunting bows, dialed in and set up now and
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: then I'll shoot them like all summer long and like
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: check up on them and make sure they're they're doing
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: good and everything. But get them set up now. And
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: I never like to rush. And I've been in so
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: many situations where I'm like, you know, the day before,
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: a week before, rushing to get something set up, and
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: then it's never it's never a so like past couple
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: of years. Um, my setups have been so dialed and
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: so perfect early and then they you know, and then
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: shoot with them, get familiar with them, and uh, you know,
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: by the time September rolls around, they're already ready to go,
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: you know. So yeah, now now it's a good time
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: to really mess with your bow and uh, you know,
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: like many of us right now and for the next
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: week or two or however long. I hopefully not too
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: much longer. We're stuck inside and many people can't shoot. Um,
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: but becoming familiar with your bow on like the technical
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: side of stuff if you can, and uh, and diving
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: into a lot of online content. You know. The most
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: important thing for me too is confidence. And when I
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: know my equipment, When I know, like I said earlier,
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: when I when I missed the deer or wounded deer
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: or whatever, as long as I know what happened and
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: I can fix it, you know, I'm in a better place.
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: And I know that a lot because I know my equipment,
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: I know my form. So it's like I was a
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: good time to study kind of you know, we're stuck inside.
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: It's understanding equipment, looking online, knowing how things work. You know,
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: there's so many good, so many good and bad resources online,
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: so definitely pick and choose and kind of filter things out.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: But yeah, what are a few of your favorite resources
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: for for archery stuff? And then also you mentioned when
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: we were talking mindset early on you mentioned a book
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: something I can't remember who it was, some about winning.
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: Are there any other books or people on the mindset
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: side of things that would be interesting too? Yeah? So
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: a book, um that I mentioned is with Winning in
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: Mind by Lanny Bassom, and it's not archery specific. It's
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: actually more like rifle shooting specific, but he does talk
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: about archery a little bit, but it's all about mindset.
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: Like that's the entire book. Kind of boring if you
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: if you're not deep into that, but that's really good. Um.
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: George Ryles UM has a lot of good segments called
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: thing a week if you just literally type in a
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: YouTube thing a week. He has like tons of very
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: um in depth detailed videos on like one specific thing.
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: It's like you know, you're shooting hand or whatever. And
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: he's done that for years, so you can find some
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: really old ones. But George Ryles, he's my coach down Atlanta.
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: He's he's one so many things. He's like, he's like
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: the pro that was like the top of the line
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: pro like twenty years ago. So now all he does
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: is like coach. He still shoots. He actually made the
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: biggest shoot off like four years ago. Still. Um yeah,
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: super knowledgeable there, George Riles. You can find all this stuff. Um.
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: Joel Turner shot i Q for for anyone, bull hunters,
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: trad people. Um, even he he's big into oh yeah,
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: he's big into trapped but turnament shooters, anything for mindset,
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: even for shooting, but for mindset especially. Um, he's got
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: a ton of stuff. Dudley. Dudley's got some good stuff
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: of course. Um, but everyone pretty much knows that. Um yeah,
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: try to stay off archie talk. Don't give you started. Yeah,
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: they can get messy in there real quick. Yeah that's crazy.
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: Um okay. So then final thing for folks once they
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: do get outside and they're shooting, UM, few tips for
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: better practice, for for good quality practice. Um. And then
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: it's a two part I do this a lot as
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: I I asked a question and then I add all
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: these add on So so so sorry for that. Um, so
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: tips for better practice and then secondly, do you recommend
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: people practice differently as the season progresses as a year progress.
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: So so should we be practicing differently now than we
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: would be in August than we would be in October? Right?
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: I got you? So. Um, things you should focus on
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: when your practice is to set goals for yourself and
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: only compare against yourself at the distances you can shoot
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: and at the skill level you can shoot. Um. A
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: lot of people want to get messages all the time.
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: It's like, oh I wish I could shoot what you shoot,
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: or you know, I'm not shooting as good as you
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: or whatever. And now social media and everything, you know,
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: you can see all these people with their groups in
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: their schools and everything. So you should really only compare
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: against yourself and try to grow against yourself. Um, and
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: don't wear yourself out obviously, you know, take it baby
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: steps if you don't shoot a whole lot or anything. Um,
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: but I guess that's one tip for practicing, like just
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: in your backyard and stuff. Um, and then throughout the season. Um.
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: What I like to do is I do like to
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: stretch things out, and a lot of my videos I
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: shoot far, you know, like eighty yards, ninety yards, hundred yards.
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: And what that does is that really amplifies your mistakes,
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: you know. It Uh, it opens up your groups, allows
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: you to um try to tone in your groups that
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: farther because like for me, if I shoot twenty yards,
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: it's like sure, like I can really micro manage that in.
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: But when you back up farther, it just amplifies everything
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: so much for me. But that's not you know, those
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: far distances could do the same thing for someone at
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: forty yards. You know, if someone you know can do
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: a paper plate at forty yards and try to dial
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: that in, you know, I'm a paper plate at a hundred,
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: you know. So everyone has their own distance that they
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: really can max out and then zone in and then
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: maybe max out a little bit more and then zone in.
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: So it just makes you a better archer when you
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: back it up a little bit. If you're always just
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: shooting twenty yards like that's all you do, tony yards,
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: that's it. Sure you can get better and everything, but
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: unless you're scoring, or unless you're like really you know,
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: paying attention to how your group size and it isn't
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: everything can't really improve per se or see your improvements. Yeah,
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: so that's that's something I've seen too. What about one
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: way to get better at long distance shooting, because because
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: I've always tried to stretch it out more and more
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: and push myself. But then, like you just said, your
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: group's open up, every mistake gets amplified. Uh, anything we
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: can be we can be doing to get better at
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: those long shots other than just doing it a lot. Yeah,
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: well it's not just one thing. And like the long shot,
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: it's not getting good at the long shot, it's just
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: like getting good at your shot. So like a middle
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: at twenty yards, if it's like dead nuts at twenty,
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: it would have been dead nuts at a hundred, you know,
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: So it's like middle's middle. It's just you know, how
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: your shot is, so like really focusing on your form.
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: You know a lot of people worry so much about equipment, equipment, equipment, equipment.
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: You know, I gotta do this, I do that, I
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: do this, But then the forum's jack you know, so
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: if it's you know, there's so many things with form,
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: like I can't there's just not one thing you can
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: point to. But um, like I said earlier, like if
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: you really want to get better, you're struggling finding a coach,
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: finding a pro shop, videoing yourself, you know, like putting
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: your phone on a tripod, looking and then looking online
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: really analyzing it. Um. Yeah, form, form is so important.
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: Like if you did the same thing if your boat,
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: let's just say your bow is so untuned so jack,
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: your knock was sticking in the target, it was doing
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: a somersault. But it does that every single time. You know,
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: your boat does the same thing every single time, like
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: for real, it does so Like if your bow is
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: so jacked, but you did the same thing every time
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: and you shot every single time, you'd still shoot really good.
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: You know. There's so many times like there's a there's
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: there's a professionals that will like they tune their bow,
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: but then they like untune their bow to get optimum groupings.
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: Essentially it's for short term and uh yeah, it's it's
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: it's all about your form. It's all about consistency. You
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: can shoot, you can shoot anything. You can pick up
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: any bow, and as long as your form is good
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: and and everything, you can shoot good with it. So
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: I feel like that's so over especially in the world
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: of everyone's like foc and all this crazy stuff. It's like, okay,
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: calm down. The most important thing. Do you know how
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: to shoot? A bow. You know, it's easy to get
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: hung up on all the menut shaw I kind of
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: I'm not good at the menu show when it comes
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: to archery equipment and gear. So I've tended to to
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: focus on the side that I feel some sense of
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: confidence around, which is which is trying to figure out
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: good form and consistency and all that stuff. And then
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: I just like outsource those other equipment things to the
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: pro shop and say, hey, help me make sure this
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: stuff's lined up because I can't keep track of it all. Yeah,
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: So I don't know that's good stuff, man, Um, I
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: think you've got to You've got a cool thing going.
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: So I've I've enjoyed hearing more about it today, and
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: I think people people certainly will have to. So if
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: people want to see what's got going on, follow your
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: YouTube videos or you on social media. Where can they
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: find all this stuff? Yeah? So just in YouTube, just
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: search my name Chris b B just like the Bumblebee.
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: Gotta do it every single time. Or people are like, no,
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: what's your full name? But yeah, I'm YouTube and Instagram
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: is Chris be real? And uh yeah, follow along there
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: and what kind of stuff do they expect over on
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: YouTube here in the off season. So offseason, Um, I
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: just did a bunch of bow build videos, so I
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: like to start to finish on bow builds and people
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: really love those. Um A lot of shooting, a lot
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: of fun I love doing like uh, funny church shots,
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: long shots. So we do a lot of entertaining stuff
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: in the off season. Um. So yeah, we're I'm looking
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: forward to a little bit warmer temperatures so you can
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: do a lot a lot more cool stuff outside. Very cool. Well,
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: I'll make sure to send folks check all that out.
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: And I appreciate you taking the time talk about all
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: this stuff. Yeah, no problem, it was fun. I enjoy it.
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: To Chris, let's stay in touch and good luck. This
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: season sounds good. Thanks guys, and that is it for
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: us today. Thank you for listening. Make sure check out
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: all of Chris's stuff. Like I mentioned, it's good stuff,
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: it's fun, a lot of good information and hunts to
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: follow along with, so enjoy that stuff. Otherwise, just be
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: safe out there, folks. I just hope and pray that
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: everyone in our Wired Hungue community is healthy and safely
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: at home with your friends or your family, whoever you
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: live with, and that you're all doing well. Um, thinking
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: of all of you, and until next time, stay wired
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: to hunt.
