- 1:49Speaker 1: A young woman texts her boyfriend goodnight and heads to bed,
- 1:53Speaker 1: but what happened in the next few hours remains unknown.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Here's Ana Garcia, Chris.
- 1:58Speaker 4: It's started as a call to a house fire reported
- 2:01Speaker 4: by a couple delivering newspapers, but when investigators got inside
- 2:05Speaker 4: the home, they realized this was no accident.
- 2:09Speaker 2: A fire in the middle of the night shows no mercy,
- 2:13Speaker 2: he said, we have a problem.
- 2:14Speaker 4: An alarm echoes from the flames as firefighters battle to
- 2:19Speaker 4: save Kelsey fight.
- 2:20Speaker 3: We believe that Kelsey fought the entire time.
- 2:22Speaker 2: It appears to be a tragic accident.
- 2:25Speaker 8: We just assumed that she was not capable of getting
- 2:27Speaker 8: out of the structure in time.
- 2:30Speaker 4: Until out of the smoldering ashes rises A cold blooded mystery.
- 2:36Speaker 4: What does your gut tell you that happened in there.
- 2:42Speaker 4: Anyone who ever met Kelsey fight couldn't help but love her.
- 2:47Speaker 4: How would you describe Kelsey?
- 2:49Speaker 7: Kelsey was fun and silly and energetic and beautiful.
- 2:55Speaker 9: Yes she was.
- 2:56Speaker 8: She was.
- 2:56Speaker 10: She took after your mother.
- 2:58Speaker 4: Randy Fike says you could always find his daughter in
- 3:01Speaker 4: a crowd by her infectious laugh and a distinct goldfish
- 3:05Speaker 4: tattoo on her back. She was a free spirit, liked art, music, dance.
- 3:12Speaker 4: She was happy.
- 3:13Speaker 5: She was happy.
- 3:15Speaker 4: The petit twenty one year old was excited about a
- 3:18Speaker 4: new job and her mom, Mary Joe, says Kelsey had
- 3:22Speaker 4: finally met the love of her life. Tell me about
- 3:24Speaker 4: her meeting Alex.
- 3:26Speaker 8: She fell very quickly for Alex. He's tall, very nice looking,
- 3:31Speaker 8: good manners.
- 3:32Speaker 4: Alex Young was a reservist with the Nebraska National Guard.
- 3:37Speaker 4: Were they in love?
- 3:38Speaker 7: Absolutely?
- 3:40Speaker 4: After a little less than a year of dating, Alex
- 3:43Speaker 4: gives Kelsey a diamond promise ring and vows to take
- 3:47Speaker 4: care of her.
- 3:48Speaker 8: I had been teasing her about I wish that she'd
- 3:50Speaker 8: hurry up, because I really wanted some grand babies.
- 3:53Speaker 4: To save money for a house. They temporarily move into
- 3:56Speaker 4: a mobile home together.
- 3:58Speaker 8: It was an older trailer, and it very much looked
- 4:01Speaker 8: like an older seventies trailer, but it was what they
- 4:04Speaker 8: could afford.
- 4:06Speaker 4: It's hidden off the main drag of Carneie, Nebraska, not
- 4:09Speaker 4: an affluent part of town, but for this young couple
- 4:12Speaker 4: in love, it was their first little piece of paradise together.
- 4:16Speaker 4: But were you concerned at all about her safety?
- 4:18Speaker 11: No?
- 4:18Speaker 12: Not really.
- 4:19Speaker 3: I mean, looking back on, maybe I should have been.
- 4:23Speaker 4: June sixteenth was like any normal day for Kelsey. She worked,
- 4:27Speaker 4: came home around five thirty, and, according to a neighbor,
- 4:31Speaker 4: took her bass at hound Dante for a walk around
- 4:34Speaker 4: nine that night. The only thing out of the ordinary
- 4:38Speaker 4: that day Alex was out of town. Did Kelcei ever
- 4:42Speaker 4: describe any fear about where she lived or the fact
- 4:45Speaker 4: that Alex was away.
- 4:46Speaker 7: She was kind of lonely and but nothing that she
- 4:49Speaker 7: felt scared.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Kelsie often stayed with her parents when Alex was away,
- 4:54Speaker 4: but this time she was busy packing for an upcoming
- 4:57Speaker 4: trip to see her best friend, Jamie Graham. When is
- 5:01Speaker 4: the last time you heard from Kelsey? She called me.
- 5:06Speaker 8: That Monday night. She had told me she was planning
- 5:09Speaker 8: on just getting organized, getting ready to leave.
- 5:14Speaker 4: In some ways. It's kind of a blessing. You had
- 5:16Speaker 4: a chance to talk to her, yes, and we.
- 5:24Speaker 8: Ended the conversation the way we always did. Love you,
- 5:29Speaker 8: I'll talk to you tomorrow.
- 5:33Speaker 5: But tomorrow didn't come, not for her.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Just a few hours later, at around four point thirty,
- 5:45Speaker 4: the mobile home erupts in a hellish ball of fire,
- 5:49Speaker 4: Tragically Kelsey's inside.
- 5:51Speaker 3: We received a phone call, a nine to one one
- 5:53Speaker 3: call from two passer buyers. They were delivering papers and
- 5:57Speaker 3: they smelled smoke coming from the trailer court. They entered
- 6:00Speaker 3: the trailer court and saw that one of the trailers
- 6:02Speaker 3: was on fire.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Carney Police investigator Doug McCarty says, the flames are so
- 6:08Speaker 4: intense neighbors are forced to stay back. The only thing
- 6:12Speaker 4: they can do is scream for Kelsey and her dog
- 6:15Speaker 4: Dante through the door. But the only sound they hear
- 6:19Speaker 4: a blaring fire alarm.
- 6:21Speaker 3: The rear the trailer, the back bedroom, as we found
- 6:24Speaker 3: out later, was on fire. It was fully in gold
- 6:26Speaker 3: the smoke was coming from it.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Sadly, by the time firefighters put out the flames, it's
- 6:32Speaker 4: too late.
- 6:33Speaker 2: To save Kelsey.
- 6:34Speaker 4: Her lifeless body found on the floor near the back bedroom.
- 6:39Speaker 4: Did it look like she was trying to get out.
- 6:41Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 6:41Speaker 3: At first we thought that it was an accident, and
- 6:44Speaker 3: she tried to get out in this succumbed to the fire.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Was there a dog, Yeah, her.
- 6:48Speaker 3: U basset hound was found in the living room of
- 6:52Speaker 3: the trailer and he was deceased.
- 6:54Speaker 4: And so they were not together.
- 6:56Speaker 3: They were not together.
- 6:57Speaker 4: Did you find that odd?
- 6:58Speaker 3: We thought it was a little odd. We weren't sure
- 7:01Speaker 3: how the dog died.
- 7:02Speaker 4: The nightmare begins for Kelsey's mom and dad with an
- 7:06Speaker 4: early morning knock from a police officer and a chaplain.
- 7:10Speaker 10: And opened the door and they said, do you have
- 7:12Speaker 10: a daughter named Kelsey's fight? Yeah, And they asked if
- 7:17Speaker 10: she had a tattoo of a goldfish on her back.
- 7:19Speaker 6: And she did.
- 7:21Speaker 8: He said, we have a problem. They had said that
- 7:23Speaker 8: they're going to fire at Kelsey's home and that she
- 7:27Speaker 8: did not survive.
- 7:29Speaker 4: How did you take that news.
- 7:32Speaker 8: I kept telling him that they were wrong, they were wrong.
- 7:36Speaker 5: It wasn't her, It wasn't her.
- 7:39Speaker 8: He kept saying, yes, it was, Yes, it.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Was because of the tattoo.
- 7:44Speaker 8: Because of the tattoo.
- 7:46Speaker 4: What did the police tell you initially that.
- 7:48Speaker 8: It was a fire and that she just was not
- 7:53Speaker 8: able to get out of the trailer.
- 7:57Speaker 4: They suddenly remembered something Alex had told them about the
- 8:01Speaker 4: mobile home when Kelsey first moved in, and now it
- 8:05Speaker 4: haunts them.
- 8:06Speaker 10: There was Loler mobile home and Alex he said something
- 8:08Speaker 10: about having a faulty furnace, and that was my first
- 8:10Speaker 10: thought that you know, the furnace had caught an enfirement,
- 8:15Speaker 10: you know, not the case.
- 8:18Speaker 4: In fact, it was far from the case. After taking
- 8:22Speaker 4: a closer look at Kelsey's burned body, cops realize this
- 8:27Speaker 4: isn't a death by fire.
- 8:29Speaker 2: It's a murder.
- 8:32Speaker 4: It's Allan's based on what you're saying. That she could
- 8:34Speaker 4: have been killed three times over. Yes, up next, what
- 8:38Speaker 4: really happened inside this mobile home? Do you believe that
- 8:42Speaker 4: the fire was set to cover up the murder?
- 8:44Speaker 8: Yes?
- 8:45Speaker 2: And who's behind the wheel of this car?
- 8:48Speaker 4: Who would want to kill Kelsey?
- 8:50Speaker 5: I have noe yet.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Now back to our story Mystery after Midnight once again,
- 8:58Speaker 1: here's Ana Garcia.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Please say they don't think that Kelsey Fyke's murder was
- 9:03Speaker 4: a random robbery gone wrong. In fact, they say evidence
- 9:06Speaker 4: at the scene points to this being a very personal attack.
- 9:10Speaker 4: Kelsey Fike's parents are beyond heartbroken. When do you miss
- 9:15Speaker 4: Kelsey the most?
- 9:16Speaker 8: Every think a minute of the day.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Their beautiful twenty one year old daughter, once full of life,
- 9:24Speaker 4: seemingly the innocent victim of a horrific mobile home fire.
- 9:30Speaker 2: What did they tell you?
- 9:31Speaker 10: They just said it to be in the fire and
- 9:33Speaker 10: the founder deceased. He had about five something that morning,
- 9:39Speaker 10: and the dog too, Yes, and Dante in the living room.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Kelsey shared the little love nest with her boyfriend Alex Young,
- 9:48Speaker 4: but he happened to be out of town, so Kelsey
- 9:51Speaker 4: was home alone when flames erupted in the master bedroom.
- 9:55Speaker 13: I knew Kelsey is so all that I don't knew
- 10:01Speaker 13: what she would be going through and what she would
- 10:04Speaker 13: have felt if she would have screamed.
- 10:06Speaker 5: It was terrible.
- 10:08Speaker 4: When rescuers arrived, the fire alarm is blaring, but the
- 10:12Speaker 4: flames are so intense.
- 10:13Speaker 2: There's no way to save Kelsey.
- 10:16Speaker 7: I accept it in a weird way that if there
- 10:19Speaker 7: was a fire, she'd probably fallen asleep and not known
- 10:22Speaker 7: what happened.
- 10:24Speaker 4: And that explanation made sense because Alex had previously complained
- 10:29Speaker 4: about a faulty furnace. Still Investigator Doug McCarty says Carney.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Police wanted to be sure there was no foul play.
- 10:37Speaker 3: We went out and our investigator went out to the
- 10:40Speaker 3: scene and started taking pictures and working his way through it.
- 10:43Speaker 2: And right from the start McCarty smells trouble. Was the
- 10:47Speaker 2: door locked.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Now both the front door and the back door were unlocked,
- 10:51Speaker 3: and war arrived.
- 10:52Speaker 4: Inside the burned out trailer, investigators find Kelsey's body on
- 10:57Speaker 4: the floor just outside the master bedroom.
- 11:00Speaker 3: And she wasn't very badly burned.
- 11:02Speaker 2: So Kelsey's body wasn't charred.
- 11:04Speaker 3: No, she had some slight fire damage.
- 11:07Speaker 4: So investigators assumed Kelsey died of smoke inhalation, that is
- 11:12Speaker 4: until they get a closer look.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Then sheer horror.
- 11:18Speaker 4: So what did you determine after examining her body.
- 11:21Speaker 3: She had bruising throughout her upper torso, her arms, her
- 11:27Speaker 3: nose had been broken, her cheek lip had been hit,
- 11:31Speaker 3: and then she had blunt forced trauma to the head.
- 11:34Speaker 3: Then she had been manually strangled, and then a ligature
- 11:37Speaker 3: had been used to a ligature. Yes, the assailant struck
- 11:41Speaker 3: her and then strangled her with his hands or her hands,
- 11:46Speaker 3: and then used a ligature to finish the palm sun.
- 11:51Speaker 4: Cops now say Kelsey fight was murdered and the mobile
- 11:55Speaker 4: home torched to cover it up.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Was there an accelerant used.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Not an exceller used? But here's our point of origin.
- 12:03Speaker 3: You can see the charring and how it was on
- 12:05Speaker 3: this far wall.
- 12:07Speaker 2: But this isn't what killed Kelsey.
- 12:09Speaker 3: The fire is not what killed No, Kelsey was dead
- 12:12Speaker 3: before the fire was set.
- 12:14Speaker 4: Was it even more horrible to learn that she had
- 12:17Speaker 4: been murdered?
- 12:17Speaker 2: Yes, yes.
- 12:22Speaker 5: It was. Who would do that to your daughter?
- 12:27Speaker 1: I have no.
- 12:28Speaker 4: Idea Officer McCarty says. They begin with the obvious person.
- 12:33Speaker 4: Her boyfriend, Alex Young was the boyfriend.
- 12:36Speaker 5: Ever a suspect.
- 12:37Speaker 3: We always look at the person that they're living with. Commonly,
- 12:41Speaker 3: that's the suspect. We knew within probably an hour that
- 12:46Speaker 3: he was gone, and he was in Maneuvers in Louisiana,
- 12:49Speaker 3: so we had ruled him out pretty quickly.
- 12:52Speaker 4: Did your investigation uncover anyone who may have had it
- 12:55Speaker 4: out for Kelsey?
- 12:56Speaker 3: We just never found anybody that disliked Kelsey. She was
- 12:59Speaker 3: liked by all of her friends, and even the exes
- 13:03Speaker 3: liked her.
- 13:04Speaker 4: Catching Kelsey's killer was proving to be more complicated than
- 13:08Speaker 4: a typical homicide because of the fire damage.
- 13:11Speaker 3: A lot of our evidence will say the wash to
- 13:13Speaker 3: wear burnt up.
- 13:15Speaker 4: So Carney cops go back to old fashioned police leg work,
- 13:19Speaker 4: beginning with the obscure location of the mobile home. She
- 13:23Speaker 4: lived in a trailer park that's tucked away in between
- 13:26Speaker 4: two businesses, really hard to find unless you know where
- 13:31Speaker 4: she lives. Cops also found something else curious, that unlocked
- 13:37Speaker 4: front door. And what does that indicate anything.
- 13:41Speaker 3: I'm not sure if that means that she knew that
- 13:43Speaker 3: somebody was coming over or she just neglected to lock
- 13:46Speaker 3: the door.
- 13:46Speaker 4: But the biggest clue may surround her beloved bassett hound Dante.
- 13:51Speaker 4: Neighbors never heard him bark that night.
- 13:54Speaker 3: The dog was very possessive, He was very protective. He
- 13:57Speaker 3: would bark at anybody that came up near the house,
- 14:00Speaker 3: and he had he was a basset hound, so people
- 14:03Speaker 3: knew when he was barking. And nobody heard him barking
- 14:06Speaker 3: that night.
- 14:07Speaker 4: That is odd.
- 14:08Speaker 3: It seems odd to us.
- 14:11Speaker 2: With that.
- 14:12Speaker 4: Cops now wonder if Kelsey's killer was a friend of hers.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Her boyfriend was gone. It's a very secluded area. She
- 14:20Speaker 3: was very careful about who she let in the house.
- 14:22Speaker 3: The dog didn't bark, so I think it's probably somebody
- 14:27Speaker 3: that she knew.
- 14:29Speaker 4: Do you think that Kelsey's murder was random or targeted?
- 14:33Speaker 10: I leaned towards targeted because she was very attractive.
- 14:37Speaker 3: She worked them all. A lot of people came through there.
- 14:40Speaker 10: It's some weird person, perverted person could have targeted to her.
- 14:44Speaker 2: But who. Finally police catch a much needed break.
- 14:49Speaker 3: We had surveillance video from across the street that shows
- 14:53Speaker 3: a car leaving the trailer corp right.
- 14:55Speaker 4: There, headlights, So you're pretty sure that that person is.
- 14:59Speaker 3: The We've never identified the car. We've never identified somebody
- 15:04Speaker 3: leaving from there, so we think it probably was.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Two different angles, both timestamped.
- 15:10Speaker 4: Four thirty nine am, approximately ten minutes before the fire
- 15:15Speaker 4: was reported.
- 15:16Speaker 3: Well, we're pretty sure it's a sedan, more likely it's
- 15:19Speaker 3: dark in color.
- 15:20Speaker 4: The problem the video is too far away to get
- 15:23Speaker 4: a plate number or the make of the car.
- 15:27Speaker 2: I could see where.
- 15:28Speaker 4: This really helps police with the timeline, but it's very
- 15:31Speaker 4: hard to make out that vehicle.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Pops still need more, and they get it.
- 15:36Speaker 4: The coroner finds strange DNA on Kelsey's body.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Was she sexually assaulted?
- 15:42Speaker 3: We think that maybe they tried to sexually assault her
- 15:45Speaker 3: and she fought, she put up a fight, and that
- 15:47Speaker 3: they weren't able to accomplish what they were there for.
- 15:51Speaker 4: But what about the DNA? Could that lead cops to
- 15:54Speaker 4: Kelsey's killer. Well, there was a problem there too. When
- 15:58Speaker 4: firefighters used the high pressure hoses to knock down the flames,
- 16:03Speaker 4: the force of the water blended Kelsey's DNA with her
- 16:06Speaker 4: possible killers DNA, So Kelsey's DNA is mixed with someone else's.
- 16:12Speaker 4: Investigator McCarty sent the samples to one of the most
- 16:15Speaker 4: sophisticated crime labs in the country, hoping to find out who.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Was in Kelsey's mobile home that terrible night.
- 16:23Speaker 4: And you're trying to separate them scientifically to see if
- 16:27Speaker 4: you can get clear DNA.
- 16:28Speaker 3: So then we'd have an actual ability to match that
- 16:32Speaker 3: DNA to our suspect.
- 16:35Speaker 4: Wow, that could actually be the break in this case.
- 16:37Speaker 5: It could.
- 16:38Speaker 3: We're hopeful that it will be. We really want closure
- 16:41Speaker 3: for the family.
- 16:42Speaker 2: For now, it's a painful waiting game.
- 16:45Speaker 8: I wake up every morning with the knowledge that my
- 16:48Speaker 8: beautiful twenty one year old daughter was very brutally murdered.
- 16:52Speaker 8: That's not gonna change.
- 16:54Speaker 4: Until science can help solve Kelsey's murder mystery. Her family
- 16:58Speaker 4: hope someone will forward because they know somewhere out there
- 17:03Speaker 4: a killer is still on the loose.
- 17:06Speaker 8: This case needs to be solved, not for Kelsey, but
- 17:12Speaker 8: for any future potential victims of this individual, so that
- 17:17Speaker 8: the next person doesn't go through the pain and the
- 17:21Speaker 8: terror that that Mike Kelsey did.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Sorry again, there's a thirty thousand dollars reward for any
- 17:35Speaker 1: information leading to the capture and conviction of a suspect
- 17:38Speaker 1: in Kelsey's death. If you know anything, you can submit
- 17:41Speaker 1: a tip at crimewatch Daily dot com or call the
- 17:44Speaker 1: Buffalo County Crime Stoppers. That number is one three oh
- 17:47Speaker 1: eight two three seven thirty four to twenty four. Coming up,
- 17:53Speaker 1: a six year old witnesses her grandmother savagely attacked and killed.
- 17:57Speaker 5: It was just absolutely bertal.
- 17:59Speaker 1: And she thing she knows who did it.
- 18:01Speaker 5: She said it was uncle Clarence.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Today how Clarence Elkins turned into a detective from behind
- 18:06Speaker 1: bars to try and clear his name.
- 18:09Speaker 6: I got it and secretly mailed it out. He got
- 18:13Speaker 6: a ninety nine point nine percent match.
- 18:16Speaker 1: That's coming up. We're back here in New York now
- 18:20Speaker 1: with a convicted murderer and his covert mission to prove
- 18:23Speaker 1: his innocence. It all starts with a brutal attack inside
- 18:26Speaker 1: an Ohio home as a grandmother is watching her granddaughter.
- 18:30Speaker 1: A grandmother is savagely slaughtered in her own house.
- 18:34Speaker 14: It was a bloodbath.
- 18:36Speaker 1: The killer raped her, slashed her throat, and beat her
- 18:40Speaker 1: to a pault.
- 18:42Speaker 5: It was just absolutely bertle.
- 18:44Speaker 1: The woman's screams wake up her six year old granddaughter.
- 18:49Speaker 1: The terrified little girl tells cops who did it.
- 18:52Speaker 5: She said it was uncle Clarence. She said it was
- 18:55Speaker 5: uncle Clarence.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Clarence Elkins, the girl's uncle. But Clarence told police.
- 19:03Speaker 6: I didn't do it. I didn't do it.
- 19:05Speaker 1: But a jury said he did, and Clarence was sent
- 19:08Speaker 1: to prison for life. How he would ultimately prove his
- 19:12Speaker 1: innocence is such an amazing story you'll think it's ripped
- 19:16Speaker 1: from an episode of Cson.
- 19:18Speaker 14: Forensic Science and Reality. It's deeply flawed.
- 19:24Speaker 1: The beautiful rolling hills of Ohio an oasis of green
- 19:28Speaker 1: in the drabness of the rust belt. Like many of
- 19:31Speaker 1: the good people here, Clarence Elkins made his living at
- 19:34Speaker 1: a steel plant.
- 19:36Speaker 6: I was a hot and cold forging operator. I was
- 19:40Speaker 6: finally able to make a day shift. Then the inevitable happened.
- 19:47Speaker 1: The inevitable, the cold blooded murder of Clarence's mother in law,
- 19:51Speaker 1: Judy Johnson.
- 19:54Speaker 6: We had, I would say, an average relationship. You know,
- 19:58Speaker 6: any son in law and mother in law would have.
- 20:02Speaker 6: I didn't have anything against her in any way.
- 20:06Speaker 1: The killer beat Judy so severely her nose, jaw, and
- 20:10Speaker 1: collarbone were fractured. Then the monster took Judy's six year
- 20:15Speaker 1: old granddaughter to her room and did the unthinkable.
- 20:20Speaker 14: The little girl ended up being attacked as well, raped, assaulted,
- 20:25Speaker 14: knocked unconscious, left for dead. Fortunately she survived.
- 20:32Speaker 1: The next morning, the girl regained consciousness and left a
- 20:35Speaker 1: chilling voicemail for a friend I. Still naked from the
- 20:51Speaker 1: horrific assault, the little girl ran next door for help.
- 20:55Speaker 11: Unclothed, blood streaming from her forehead, knocked on the door
- 21:02Speaker 11: and told the neighbor that somebody had hurt her grandma
- 21:09Speaker 11: and her and the neighbor at that time told her
- 21:13Speaker 11: just wait, I'm gonna call your mother.
- 21:16Speaker 1: But for some strange reason, the neighbor left the girl
- 21:19Speaker 1: on her doorstep for forty five minutes before taking her to.
- 21:22Speaker 11: Her mother, when a child appears on your front step
- 21:26Speaker 11: in that way, Why when you invite the child into
- 21:28Speaker 11: your home, Why when you wrap the child up in
- 21:31Speaker 11: a blanket. Why when you call the police when a
- 21:34Speaker 11: child has obviously been assaulted.
- 21:37Speaker 1: The girl told the neighbor the killer looked like Clarence.
- 21:41Speaker 1: That was enough for police to get an arrest warrant.
- 21:44Speaker 6: I remember hearing somebody come the driveway real fast.
- 21:48Speaker 1: A swat team swarms Clarence's house and immediately slaps the
- 21:52Speaker 1: cuffs on his fifteen year old son. Clarence the second they.
- 21:56Speaker 12: Told him I was arrest for the murder of jud Johnson,
- 22:00Speaker 12: and I just said what.
- 22:01Speaker 6: I didn't know what to think about it.
- 22:03Speaker 3: It was almost like you're in a dream, but you
- 22:05Speaker 3: can't do nothing about it.
- 22:07Speaker 1: He never had time to process the fact that his
- 22:09Speaker 1: own grandmother was murdered.
- 22:13Speaker 6: It was disbelief to me.
- 22:15Speaker 8: It didn't seem real.
- 22:16Speaker 1: And the boy wasn't even the suspect. His brief arrest
- 22:20Speaker 1: just collateral damage in the search for who Comps thought
- 22:23Speaker 1: was the real killer. His father I said.
- 22:27Speaker 6: Well, what's going on? And they said, turn around, put
- 22:31Speaker 6: your hands up, and walk backwards slowly. And I'm like,
- 22:35Speaker 6: you got the wrong house here or something. And then
- 22:39Speaker 6: eventually they told me about a half an hour later
- 22:41Speaker 6: that I was a suspect in a murder of my
- 22:46Speaker 6: then mother in law, Judith Johnson. And I said, you
- 22:51Speaker 6: have the wrong person. There's nobody here ever it's done
- 22:55Speaker 6: anything like that, and they said, well, they had a
- 22:59Speaker 6: ways and it was the six year old girl.
- 23:04Speaker 1: In the county jail. Clarence found support from one man
- 23:07Speaker 1: who believed in him, Pastor Tom Williams.
- 23:11Speaker 4: When I first met Clarence, I said, I want you
- 23:13Speaker 4: to look me in my eyes.
- 23:15Speaker 5: I want you to tell me did you do this?
- 23:16Speaker 5: And he looked at me and said, I did not
- 23:18Speaker 5: do this.
- 23:19Speaker 1: I don't even know what's going on.
- 23:21Speaker 5: I did not do this.
- 23:24Speaker 1: And from that moment on he had me. Defense attorney
- 23:28Speaker 1: Larry Whitney says Clarence couldn't have been at the crime
- 23:31Speaker 1: scene because he was at a bar more than an
- 23:33Speaker 1: hour away.
- 23:34Speaker 11: Although we didn't have an alibi for that time, we
- 23:36Speaker 11: had a virtual alibi. We had evidence as to where
- 23:40Speaker 11: he was in such a way that he would have
- 23:43Speaker 11: had to flu at eighty miles an hour to get
- 23:46Speaker 11: to the scene of a crime and back.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Clarence stood trial for murder, attempted murder, and rape.
- 23:52Speaker 11: The motive was the difficulty that he had with his
- 23:56Speaker 11: mother in law personally.
- 23:57Speaker 1: There was no physical evidence Tyan Claire to the crime scene,
- 24:01Speaker 1: but the eyewitness evidence, the little girl's claim, and a trial,
- 24:05Speaker 1: her story dramatically changed. Instead of saying the killer looked
- 24:09Speaker 1: like Clarence, she told the jury it was Clarence.
- 24:13Speaker 11: And my cross examination of her was that was one
- 24:16Speaker 11: of the discrepancies. Didn't you tell the neighbor that it
- 24:20Speaker 11: looked like uncle Clarence, and then later on you ended
- 24:23Speaker 11: up saying it was my uncle Clarence.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Jurors believed the little girl and convicted Clarence. The sentence
- 24:31Speaker 1: life in prison.
- 24:33Speaker 6: I thought, well, you know pretty much my life is
- 24:38Speaker 6: over now.
- 24:39Speaker 1: The moment he walked through the prison gates, Clarence knew
- 24:42Speaker 1: he had a target on his back.
- 24:45Speaker 6: It's not a safe place. With the charges I was
- 24:48Speaker 6: charged with. Most inmates don't look on that too lightly.
- 24:52Speaker 6: I was always half to watch my back, lost faith
- 24:56Speaker 6: in the justice system and lost trust in about every.
- 25:01Speaker 1: For years, Clarence rotted away in his prison cell. Then
- 25:04Speaker 1: a sensational new development gave him hope. Science was about
- 25:08Speaker 1: to turn this verdict upside down. His legal team used
- 25:12Speaker 1: new technology to test skin cell DNA left in the
- 25:16Speaker 1: little girl's panties.
- 25:17Speaker 14: We see DNA testing that can be done because that
- 25:19Speaker 14: gives you a clear answer, yes or no if the
- 25:21Speaker 14: person's ennisent or not.
- 25:22Speaker 1: And the results proved that DNA didn't belong to Clarence,
- 25:25Speaker 1: but to a mystery man.
- 25:26Speaker 6: I realized that somebody was framing me. Somebody's set me up.
- 25:31Speaker 1: For just two was framing him. Next, Clarence turns from
- 25:36Speaker 1: inmate into his own CSI investigator.
- 25:39Speaker 6: I've seen he putting a cigarette out.
- 25:41Speaker 1: How a tiny cigarette butt becomes Clarence's big break. He
- 25:47Speaker 1: looked like my uncle Clarence. That's what a six year
- 25:50Speaker 1: old victim told police after she and her grandmother were
- 25:53Speaker 1: violently attacked. That statement was enough for COMPS to arrest
- 25:56Speaker 1: Clarence Elkins and even send him to prison for life.
- 26:00Speaker 1: But Elkins has always maintained he's innocent, and now he
- 26:04Speaker 1: needed help to prove it. Prisons are filled with thousands
- 26:09Speaker 1: of men who claim they're innocent, and Clarence Elkins is
- 26:13Speaker 1: no different.
- 26:15Speaker 6: Everybody in prison, they say they're innocent.
- 26:18Speaker 1: But Clarence is one inmate who really is innocent.
- 26:22Speaker 6: I got arrested, falsely accused, and wrongly convicted.
- 26:27Speaker 1: In Ohio jury sent Clarence to prison for life in
- 26:31Speaker 1: the brutal murder of his mother in law, Judy Johnson,
- 26:34Speaker 1: and rape of his six year old niece. How would
- 26:38Speaker 1: he convince the system he didn't do it. Mark Ganzi
- 26:42Speaker 1: from the Ohio Innocence Project came to his rescue right away.
- 26:46Speaker 14: Caught my attention because it had all the earmarks that
- 26:49Speaker 14: were looking for. That was a very shaky eyewitness ida,
- 26:51Speaker 14: and more importantly, there was DNA evidence that could be tested.
- 26:55Speaker 1: The eyewitness was Clarence's six year old niece. She told
- 26:59Speaker 1: the court uncle Clarence did it. Then, in a stunning reversal,
- 27:03Speaker 1: years later, she recanted her story.
- 27:07Speaker 15: I think it was two thousand and two when she
- 27:08Speaker 15: took it back when she said that she was afraid
- 27:10Speaker 15: to go against what people were encouraging her to testify to.
- 27:15Speaker 15: Clarence tried to get an appeal on that basis.
- 27:18Speaker 5: He was denied, so.
- 27:20Speaker 1: His team hired a private investigator to identify people in
- 27:24Speaker 1: the neighborhood who might be the real killer, and.
- 27:27Speaker 14: One of them the identified with Earl Man.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Earl Man a convicted sex offender. Remember when Clarence's niece
- 27:34Speaker 1: went next door for help after the attack, that was
- 27:38Speaker 1: Man's house and his girlfriend had told the child to
- 27:41Speaker 1: wait outside while Man was inside. The girl never saw him.
- 27:45Speaker 16: PETE want to invite the little girl into the house
- 27:47Speaker 16: to get another look at ear Man.
- 27:50Speaker 14: He looked like Clarence Elkins, and he had just been
- 27:53Speaker 14: released from prison a few days before the murder and
- 27:55Speaker 14: rapes in this case and was living next door. Who
- 28:00Speaker 14: happens to look like Clarence Elkins.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Look at them side by side. They both have thick eyebrows.
- 28:05Speaker 1: And you'll be stunned at what Man said to cops
- 28:07Speaker 1: after an unrelated arrest.
- 28:09Speaker 14: Pearl Man had been picked up for a violent crime
- 28:12Speaker 14: and on his way to the police station, said to
- 28:14Speaker 14: the officer who arrested him, why aren't you arresting me
- 28:17Speaker 14: for the murder of Judy Johnson.
- 28:18Speaker 1: And in an unbelievable turn of events, Man fell right
- 28:22Speaker 1: into Clarence's hands. He was sentenced to the same prison.
- 28:27Speaker 6: At first, I didn't want to point the finger and
- 28:29Speaker 6: blame somebody without some kind of evidence, so I contemplated
- 28:36Speaker 6: on possibly maybe getting some kind of DNA from this guy, and.
- 28:41Speaker 1: He found it in of all places of prison, ashtray.
- 28:45Speaker 1: After years of praying and hoping, Clarence finally had the
- 28:49Speaker 1: key that would unlock his cell door.
- 28:52Speaker 6: I seen him putting a cigarette butt out, and I
- 28:57Speaker 6: retrieved the cigarette butt out of the ashtray makeshift ash tree,
- 29:00Speaker 6: and put it in a bible concordinance I have.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Clarence took the Bible back to his cell, placed the
- 29:06Speaker 1: butt in a baggy and sent it to his lawyer.
- 29:09Speaker 6: Secretly mailed it out, got it to the lab, and
- 29:12Speaker 6: I got a call about a month or so later,
- 29:15Speaker 6: got a ninety nine point nine percent match.
- 29:19Speaker 1: But Clarence needed some friends in high places to get
- 29:22Speaker 1: the DNA results to the court. He found a key
- 29:25Speaker 1: li in Jim Caneppa, who then worked for the Ohio
- 29:29Speaker 1: Attorney General.
- 29:30Speaker 16: So victim number one victim number two forensic evidence from
- 29:36Speaker 16: the rapes match each other and exclude Clarence.
- 29:42Speaker 1: And Clarence had another supporter at the eg's office who
- 29:46Speaker 1: would become more than just a friend, a legal secretary
- 29:50Speaker 1: named Mollie. She eventually became missus Clarence Elkins.
- 29:55Speaker 17: I even thought, Wow, is he really innocent? And then
- 29:58Speaker 17: I was quite surprised that he was actually still in
- 30:00Speaker 17: prison and they had evidence overwhelming that he shouldn't have
- 30:05Speaker 17: been there.
- 30:06Speaker 1: Now the full power of the office of the Attorney
- 30:08Speaker 1: General was behind Clarence's bid for freedom, and in a
- 30:12Speaker 1: dramatic turn of events, Clarence was completely exonerated. He walked
- 30:17Speaker 1: out of prison a freeman.
- 30:19Speaker 2: I'm still pinching myself.
- 30:22Speaker 1: The real killer turned out to be that neighbor next door,
- 30:26Speaker 1: earl Man. He pleaded guilty to the crimes Clarence was
- 30:30Speaker 1: accused of and sentenced to life in prison.
- 30:34Speaker 6: To be part of proving your own innocence from behind
- 30:38Speaker 6: bars and concrete walls and Barbara, that's pretty amazing stuff.
- 30:46Speaker 1: I think today Clarence and his sons are making up
- 30:50Speaker 1: for lost time.
- 30:52Speaker 3: When I see him walk out the doors, it's kind
- 30:55Speaker 3: of when it set in, kind of went in chalk
- 30:57Speaker 3: all over again.
- 30:58Speaker 1: They're bonding over but it didn't have billiards and posing
- 31:04Speaker 1: for pictures at family gatherings. But what about the eight
- 31:11Speaker 1: hundred pound gorilla in the room. The six year old
- 31:14Speaker 1: niece who accused her uncle Clarence.
- 31:17Speaker 6: I still don't hold any ill willed fillings towards her.
- 31:23Speaker 6: She's just an amazing, strong person to survive.
- 31:27Speaker 1: And so is Clarence, cherishing the freedom of riding his
- 31:30Speaker 1: motorcycle whenever he wants. He and Molly established a scholarship
- 31:35Speaker 1: fund at the University of Cincinnati Law School that's where
- 31:38Speaker 1: the Ohio Innocence Project is based. He says he doesn't
- 31:45Speaker 1: want another innocent person to be behind the eight ball.
- 31:49Speaker 6: I wouldn't wish that kind of nightmare on anyone my
- 31:52Speaker 6: worst enemy. It's a living hell, so to speak.
- 31:59Speaker 1: As for per old Man, he will never see the
- 32:01Speaker 1: outside of a prison again. On top of the murder
- 32:04Speaker 1: charges to which he pleaded guilty in this case, he's
- 32:07Speaker 1: also serving a seven year sentence for three unrelated sexual assaults,
- 32:11Speaker 1: attacks that may have never happened had the right man
- 32:15Speaker 1: been behind bars in the first place. Up next, a
- 32:20Speaker 1: young woman murdered after a massive Halloween party in the Woods.
- 32:24Speaker 1: Police finally unmasked the monster they say killed Chelsea Brook.
- 32:28Speaker 12: During the interview, detective to obtained details that only the
- 32:32Speaker 12: killer would have known, as this information had never been
- 32:35Speaker 12: disseminated to the public.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Coming on, it was a horror story that started out
- 32:43Speaker 1: of all places, a Halloween party. A young woman goes
- 32:46Speaker 1: missing for months before police would eventually find her body. Today,
- 32:50Speaker 1: we've got a Crime Launch daily update from the courtroom
- 32:53Speaker 1: as the alleged killer lays out his unbelievable defense and
- 32:57Speaker 1: he finally learns his fate is pat Lolama.
- 33:02Speaker 9: He swore it was just an accident.
- 33:04Speaker 6: Do you intend to cause her death?
- 33:06Speaker 11: No?
- 33:06Speaker 6: I did not.
- 33:08Speaker 9: He insisted things just got out of hand.
- 33:11Speaker 1: That didn't mean for.
- 33:12Speaker 3: Her to die, didn't mean to stand like this.
- 33:16Speaker 9: But cops didn't believe Daniel Clay, and neither did a
- 33:20Speaker 9: Michigan jury finding the twenty eight year old career criminal
- 33:24Speaker 9: guilty of the violent and tortuous murder of young Chelsea Broock.
- 33:29Speaker 9: The payback for Clay's heinous deed a mandatory sentence of
- 33:33Speaker 9: life behind bars.

- 33:49Speaker 9: Chelsea say friends was more the quiet, demid type, not
- 33:53Speaker 9: open to strangers. Didn't even drive The twenty two year
- 33:56Speaker 9: old blonde with an infectious smile, lived at home with
- 33:59Speaker 9: her parents. Still, Chelsea was eager to go to the party.
- 34:02Speaker 9: She hopped a ride with a friend and showed up
- 34:05Speaker 9: at the huge affair donning her own homemade costume depicting
- 34:09Speaker 9: the villainous character poison Ivy of Batman Fame, black pants,
- 34:14Speaker 9: leaf top, dark wig. Friend Becky Aguilar Brinson tells our
- 34:19Speaker 9: affiliate partner w XYZ Chelsea was there and then she wasn't.
- 34:25Speaker 8: I told her, I said, stay right here, I'll be
- 34:27Speaker 8: right back.
- 34:29Speaker 9: This picture, taken at one thirty in the morning, according
- 34:32Speaker 9: to another friend, shows Chelsea still wearing the costume and
- 34:35Speaker 9: still at the party. But Chelsea would never make it home.
- 34:41Speaker 9: Law enforcement in southeast Michigan launched an investigation and a
- 34:46Speaker 9: call to action.
- 34:47Speaker 16: It's never too late.
- 34:48Speaker 3: We just want our daughter back.
- 34:50Speaker 9: Someone at the party reported they saw Chelsea walking toward
- 34:54Speaker 9: the parking area at three am with a man wearing
- 34:57Speaker 9: dark glasses and a black hooded sweatshirt. This composite sketch
- 35:01Speaker 9: is immediately drawn up and released. Months past without a suspect,
- 35:06Speaker 9: without justice for Chelsea, our twenty third birthday had come
- 35:10Speaker 9: and gone. Her sister's wedding now part of the family album.
- 35:14Speaker 4: It would have been the perfect wedding if all my
- 35:18Speaker 4: children had been there.
- 35:20Speaker 9: Finally, a piece of Chelsea's poison ivy costume is found
- 35:24Speaker 9: on an abandoned lot. Three weeks later, construction workers excavating
- 35:29Speaker 9: a secluded property find Chelsea's remains.
- 35:33Speaker 12: Chelsea's decomposed body was located in a wooded area on
- 35:37Speaker 12: Briar Hill Road in Ash Township.
- 35:40Speaker 9: According to reports, Chelsea's body was nude and partially decomposed,
- 35:45Speaker 9: covered in logs and limbs. Cops link DNA found on
- 35:49Speaker 9: Chelsea's costume to Daniel Clay when they interview him on
- 35:53Speaker 9: an unrelated theft charge. He talked himself right into a
- 35:57Speaker 9: murder wrap.
- 35:57Speaker 12: During the interview, detectives obtain the tills that only the
- 36:01Speaker 12: killer would have known, as this information had never been
- 36:05Speaker 12: disseminated to the public.
- 36:07Speaker 9: Clay told police Chelsea died accidentally during rough sex in
- 36:12Speaker 9: the back of his car. But in this police interrogation
- 36:15Speaker 9: take Clay just can't explain how Chelsea's jaw.
- 36:20Speaker 5: Had been broken.
- 36:21Speaker 2: I don't remember eating.
- 36:27Speaker 9: The medical examiner ruled Chelsea's death the result of blunt
- 36:31Speaker 9: force trauma to the head far from an accident. Daniel Clay,
- 36:36Speaker 9: the deadbeat dad of two young sons, had a history
- 36:39Speaker 9: of brushes with the law, but a social media post
- 36:43Speaker 9: on Daniel's page one month after Chelsea's murder seems to
- 36:48Speaker 9: indicate a desire to step up the criminal game. I
- 36:52Speaker 9: already know that I'm going to hell at this point.
- 36:55Speaker 9: It's really go big or go home. Definitely not home,
- 37:00Speaker 9: and who knows about hell. What we do know is
- 37:03Speaker 9: Daniel Clay will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
- 37:06Speaker 3: Everything to say to Chelsea's family, I'm.
- 37:09Speaker 9: Sorry, empty words for a family whose hearts are filled
- 37:14Speaker 9: with everlasting pain.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Up next, a young college student is found dead in
- 37:24Speaker 1: the waters of this picturesque Tennessee lake. It's officially ruled
- 37:28Speaker 1: in accidental drowning, but could it be murdered?
- 37:32Speaker 4: I believe that there was foul play.
- 37:34Speaker 1: Our viewer's way in on the controversial story of Lauren
- 37:38Speaker 1: ag Next, among all this beauty and ugly incidental, a
- 37:46Speaker 1: beautiful twenty one year old is found dead floating in
- 37:49Speaker 1: a Tennessee lake. Police say it was a tragic accident,
- 37:52Speaker 1: her mother and others believe it was something else.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Do you think she drowned.
- 37:57Speaker 5: I know she didn't drown.
- 37:59Speaker 1: Today our view were sound off on the controversial case.
- 38:02Speaker 1: What happened on this cliff. It all starts when Lauren
- 38:06Speaker 1: ag sets off on a camping trip with three friends
- 38:09Speaker 1: to a popular wakeboarding event.
- 38:11Speaker 7: But Lauren definitely was I mean alcohol within her system.
- 38:14Speaker 5: You could tell. I mean she was having a good.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Time after a day filled with partying. At around two
- 38:19Speaker 1: thirty am, the four canoe in the dark to a
- 38:22Speaker 1: remote campsite. The location ninety feet above the lake on
- 38:26Speaker 1: one side and a forty five foot drop down the other.
- 38:29Speaker 1: And the most terrifying tart the place where you sleep.
- 38:32Speaker 1: Once you're up there is a hammock tied between two
- 38:35Speaker 1: trees dangling right out over the water.
- 38:37Speaker 7: And I remember saying that to myself, if this rope breaks,
- 38:42Speaker 7: I'm gone.
- 38:43Speaker 1: In the early morning hours, the other threes say they
- 38:46Speaker 1: all go to sleep, but when the sun comes up,
- 38:48Speaker 1: Lauren is gone.
- 38:49Speaker 9: They could have said, hey, our friend is missing, can
- 38:52Speaker 9: you help us look for her.
- 38:54Speaker 4: They didn't do any of the things that normal friends
- 38:57Speaker 4: would do.
- 38:58Speaker 1: Instead, the other girl in the group reportedly tells authorities.
- 39:02Speaker 5: She must have went back to the bar.
- 39:04Speaker 1: Sadly, that wasn't the case. A fishermen would find her
