- 0:00I have many questions about Miss Piggy, but one that's been
- 0:03occupying me lately is what was going on with the crew with the
- 0:06USS Bonefish. I will explain.
- 0:09In July 1977, there was a wire service article in newspapers
- 0:12across the country declaring that AUS Navy submarine
- 0:15stationed at Pearl Harbor had declared that their ideal woman
- 0:18and official pin up girl was Miss Piggy.
- 0:21Now this is summer of 1977 after the first season of The Muppet
- 0:24Show had aired, so it was not super unusual to see people
- 0:26going nuts over The Muppets. But the crew of this Navy
- 0:29submarine went out of their way to specifically announced to
- 0:32newspapers that they were no longer interested in Farrah
- 0:35Fawcett Majors because now they were devoted to this pig puppet.
- 0:38This is interesting to me because first season Miss Piggy
- 0:40was not yet the glamorous superstar that she would become.
- 0:43She only had one outfit that she wore all the time and the puppet
- 0:46was about to get a very welcome redesign.
- 0:48Also, she was created basically as an irritant who would
- 0:51literally throw herself at Kermit and get in his way.
- 0:54But the guys on the USS Bonefish, they sent her a
- 0:56photograph of their submarine autographed by the entire crew
- 1:00and Lieutenant Commander Jr. Mccleary invited Miss Piggy to
- 1:03visit them in Hawaii, Although he did warn her about attending
- 1:06any Luau's since they could be dangerous to her health.
- 1:09And the weird thing is, I bet some of those guys were
- 1:11straight. So today on the podcast we're
- 1:15going to talk about first season Miss Piggy and we are going to
- 1:17figure out what did they see in her.
- 1:21I can't give you anything but love, baby.
- 1:28That's the only thing I've plenty of, baby.
- 1:35Kissy kissy and welcome to another episode of the fantastic
- 1:38Miss Piggy Podcast. I'm Danny Horn and this podcast
- 1:40chronicles my journey to learn everything there is to know
- 1:43about that divine swine being comparable Miss Piggy.
- 1:46We are talking about season one of The Muppet Show today and my
- 1:49guest from moving right along The Muppet Movie Podcast is the
- 1:53attractive and talented Anthony Strand.
- 1:55Kissy Kissy Anthony. Welcome to the show.
- 1:58Kissy kissy Danny I wanted. I wanted to think of another
- 2:02thing like a like a Mercy Buku Danny or something.
- 2:05But that would work. All I could think of was was Pee
- 2:08Wee Herman saying Mercy Blade, and I wanted to say that
- 2:13instead. Yeah, no, thanks for having me.
- 2:15I'm. I'm excited.
- 2:16Hi. Great.
- 2:18I am delighted to have you here. Why don't you tell the nice
- 2:21people about moving right along? Moving right along is a Muppet
- 2:24Movie podcast brought to you by toughpigs.com.
- 2:27Say just like this podcast and and this in our one It's myself
- 2:31and Ryan Rowe, the co-owner current co-owner of the website.
- 2:35We watch Muppet movies 2 minutes at a time, so each episode is 2
- 2:39minutes in order, sequential order of a Muppet movie.
- 2:43Well, not each episode is 2 minutes.
- 2:44Each episode is. No.
- 2:47In in each episode we cover 2 minutes, a 2 minute chunk of the
- 2:50movie. Our episodes are typically much
- 2:52longer, but we've done the 1st 4 movies, we've done Christmas
- 2:56Carol, and now we'll do Muppet Treasure Island sometime in the
- 3:00future. Yeah, it feels a little bit like
- 3:03you're putting it off Muppet Treasure Island for some reason.
- 3:06Well, I I we we can talk about this here.
- 3:08I don't. I The thing is, I don't like the
- 3:11movie very much at all. And Ryan likes it more than I.
- 3:15But I don't know that it's like his favorite movie, though.
- 3:18I don't know that he like, I know it's not his favorite
- 3:20movie. Yeah, it's like a sixth favorite
- 3:21Muppet movie or something. So I don't know that he's really
- 3:24all that excited about being the guy who's like, actually, I
- 3:27gotta, I gotta defend it, You know, like, I I think I'm much
- 3:31more excited to be like, uh, sub par than Ryan.
- 3:35Is to be like that puts him in the position of like, right?
- 3:37Yeah, yeah, you're gonna have to.
- 3:39You're gonna have to, like, dig into the metaphor of it.
- 3:44Yeah, yeah. And the metaphor of it is, can
- 3:47we do that again after Muppet Christmas Carol?
- 3:49And it turned out it turned out they could not.
- 3:51Yeah, no, not really. At least not that time.
- 3:54That's the story of Muppet. Treasure Island is like we we
- 3:57have a winning formula. And then it turned out that
- 3:59formula won exactly once. Right.
- 4:02Yeah. And it's and.
- 4:03And so now it's just another Brian Brian Henson novelty
- 4:06piece. Right, exactly.
- 4:10But Miss Piggy doesn't show up for over an hour into that
- 4:12thing, so let's not talk about that.
- 4:14No. Well, that's when I'm coming.
- 4:15I usually come on the show for the Miss Piggy parts and just
- 4:17talk about how great Miss Piggy is.
- 4:19So it's nice that this time I I got you to come on my show to
- 4:21talk about how great Miss Piggy is.
- 4:23I'm here for it. Now one thing I like to do is
- 4:26start out the podcast by saying something nice about Miss Piggy,
- 4:29which I think every podcast should do.
- 4:31And you would be amazed by how many podcasts do not open that
- 4:34way. Like This American Life is like
- 4:36OK, before we get started though, let's say something nice
- 4:38about Miss Piggy. So Anthony, I will ask you, what
- 4:41is one of the ways that Miss Piggy has made your life better
- 4:44and happier? One of my favorite things about
- 4:47The Muppets is the way that in in songs, especially the way
- 4:53Frank Oz will ad Lib. Just like silly lines off the
- 4:58wall lines to entertain himself. And there is no better vehicle
- 5:03for this than Miss Piggy. There are so many mediocre
- 5:08Muppet projects from the 1990s where Frank Oz is playing Piggy
- 5:13and clearly bored out of his gourd, and then he'll just yell
- 5:18I'm going fruitcake or something that's, you know, that's
- 5:22incurment on pig. And it makes me so happy that
- 5:27that Piggy's ability to just like, 'cause chaos, even, even
- 5:32when the project didn't want her to and didn't care.
- 5:35Right, yes. Yeah.
- 5:36You, you know that's. What she brings.
- 5:38It's it's one of the things that kept The Muppets alive during
- 5:42during like a dark era for them. They're like post gym, pre
- 5:47Disney sale, you know, which is what we're in.
- 5:49We're in on the podcast right now, so I'm hearing a lot of
- 5:51that stuff. And man, every time Frank gets
- 5:54to play Piggy, it's like The Muppets are back.
- 5:57Something special, Yeah, that's a really good one.
- 6:00We are going to talk about kind of how she happened as she
- 6:04developed over the first season of The Muppet Show and I
- 6:07preparing for this. I kind of realized what a smart
- 6:08idea was for moving right along that you talk about two minutes
- 6:11of the movie because this is a really big topic and there is so
- 6:14much to talk about. So we're going to, we're going
- 6:16to hit the highlights and see how this goes.
- 6:18Now in 1980, I wanted to start out with just a little sound
- 6:21clip on the Today Show when Frank Oz was asked if Miss Piggy
- 6:24was based on anybody. Is there an amalgam of real
- 6:28people in her, or is she absolutely fantasy?
- 6:31Is there any Mae W for instance in?
- 6:32No, no, I had. I didn't pattern her, pattern
- 6:34her after anyone. It just came from my warped view
- 6:38of women. It it it just, it just kind of
- 6:42happened. So that's what we're doing
- 6:44today. We are going to look at how it
- 6:45just kind of happened. So let's start out with episode
- 6:49one O 1 with Julia Perez episode.
- 6:51This is the first episode of The Muppet Show, and it ends with
- 6:54temptation as sung by the Muppet Glee Club, the bunch of frogs
- 6:58and chickens and pigs who are part of the Glee club, including
- 7:01this Piggy and Kermit's the conductor.
- 7:04And they start out by singing different songs and Kermit says
- 7:06it would be better if they were all singing the same song.
- 7:09The chickens say wild and pig says the frog is the genius.
- 7:11And then here's Miss Piggy's first line.
- 7:14She kind of Mumbles to another pig.
- 7:15He's awful cute too. And that is where that is how
- 7:20Miss Piggy enters our lives. Which is such a it's such a
- 7:23mission statement of a line, right.
- 7:25It's like, I mean it's it's truly right up there with there
- 7:29goes Charlie Brown, good old Charlie Brown, how I hate him
- 7:32being being the first peanut strip.
- 7:34Or it's just like from from minute one, it's clear what this
- 7:37thing is going to be. Yeah.
- 7:39And and that's going to be for the next 5 decades, that's going
- 7:41to be the runner. Right.
- 7:44And Kern calls for piggy honey. They they say that they want to
- 7:48sing temptation, so they're all in.
- 7:50Since there seems to be some consensus of opinion here, the
- 7:54Muppet Glee Club will now render temptation Piggy honey, you can
- 8:00take this all off. Yes, my love.
- 8:03There we go. I know him.
- 8:06And then she mutters to the to the pig next to her.
- 8:08I love him. So Kermit calling her Piggy
- 8:11Honey, he's just, like, being being a director, right?
- 8:15He's he's just, he's trying to schmooze her.
- 8:17He's trying to get a performance out of her, right?
- 8:19Like he's he's, he's Warren William in 40 2nd St. or
- 8:22something. He doesn't care about her.
- 8:24I I I would say that's up for debate.
- 8:26At this sketch, you think he's. Well, actually, actually, yes.
- 8:29Like for this sketch, I would say yes, that's up for debate.
- 8:32As of her very next appearance, absolutely not.
- 8:35Sure, like Kermit. Can we talk about Kermit here
- 8:39for a SEC? Let's He feels very Sesame
- 8:43Street ish to me in this sketch. Like, he's trying to wrangle all
- 8:47these all these silly creatures, you know, which is like not
- 8:50silly creatures on Fraggle Rock, but like creatures who are being
- 8:53silly. And he he's like talking down to
- 8:56them. The same way he talks down to
- 8:59Grover or Cookie Monster. You know, when they're when
- 9:01they're presenting a body part or whatever, you know?
- 9:05Yeah 'cause these animals are just being goofy and stupid.
- 9:08Yeah, yeah, He doesn't feel like like backstage.
- 9:12Overwhelmed. Kermit.
- 9:13He's very like like teacherly we maybe, maybe we should all sing
- 9:17the same song, you know, like he's very, very like trying to
- 9:20like, speak calmly to to get what he wants.
- 9:24Well, and he's like, and they never do this again on the show.
- 9:27They never put they don't really put Kermit out on stage like
- 9:29this with a group of people. Yeah, not unless he's singing.
- 9:32Like if he's if he's performing the song, they'll do that, but.
- 9:36Now I I I could say from like within the continuity that like
- 9:40this sketch might be the reason why he doesn't do this anymore.
- 9:44Because it goes poorly. It goes poorly for him.
- 9:46Yeah, I just. Want to take a second to
- 9:48acknowledge the costume because Piggy is wearing a special
- 9:51costume just for the scene. I don't know if you clocked
- 9:53that. It's not her typical silver
- 9:55satin dress. Like everybody looks super
- 9:57snazzy in this. All the frogs and the pigs are
- 10:00wearing purple tuxedos. And the chickens and Piggy, they
- 10:03have spangly dresses on. And so there's a couple chickens
- 10:05in blue, and then Piggy is in kind of like a light maroon, and
- 10:08she's got a flower and she's got, she's got bare arms in
- 10:12this. This is one of the very few
- 10:14times that she doesn't have gloves on.
- 10:16So they start singing Temptation and Piggy takes the solo, and it
- 10:20is Richard Hunt's voice. And that's so unsettling, like
- 10:24and and even even some of the sketches that we watched for
- 10:27this. We heard Richard Hunt a little
- 10:28bit in some of those episodes. Yeah, you know, there's a
- 10:30there's a panel discussion in Florence Henderson right, where
- 10:35she's, she's Richard Hunt. But it's just so strange that
- 10:40this is her big moment. This is piggy star making
- 10:42moment. She's frank, to be clear for the
- 10:45audience. She's Frank Oz when she's
- 10:46talking. Yes, yeah, when she says I love
- 10:49him. And yes, my love, that is Frank.
- 10:51Oz, It's Frank. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:52And then she starts singing and it's Richard Hunt.
- 10:54It's this, it's this, you know, pretty close to Gladys the Cow.
- 10:57Yeah, it's it's that kind of like, matronly voice.
- 11:00Yeah. And it's like because I think I
- 11:04I heard this before I ever saw it.
- 11:06Like, I think my first experience with this was I I I
- 11:11don't know if we want to shout out Scott by name, but.
- 11:13Let's do it, yeah. All right, Our friend Scott 2020
- 11:17plus years ago posted MP threes of every single song from The
- 11:22Muppet Show season one on its website.
- 11:24And so I hadn't seen most of those episodes, and certainly
- 11:28this is from the first episodes. It was one of the first songs I
- 11:30listened to and I don't think I knew it was Piggy singing until
- 11:34you like you told me on the on the Tough Pigs forum, you know?
- 11:38Yeah, and and you wouldn't know that just from listening to this
- 11:41as the song, Yeah, because it does.
- 11:43It sounds like Gladys the Cow from Sesame Street.
- 11:45Right, right. So it's just like, oh, there's
- 11:46there's Richard Hunt taking the solo.
- 11:48Great. Always nice to hear Richard
- 11:50right. So this is it's the curious case
- 11:53of this piggy in the first season, where she gets passed
- 11:55back and forth between Frank Oz and and Richard Hunt for most of
- 11:59the first season. Right.
- 12:00Which so does Mildred is, is Richard is.
- 12:04Yeah. Well, 'cause like Frank plays
- 12:05her during at the dance when she's dancing with George, it's
- 12:09always great there. And like Aaron, Oscar plays her
- 12:11sometimes, Richard plays her sometimes and and I think even
- 12:15Louise Gold in season 2 once or twice and but she's she's like
- 12:18treated like a character. You know, she like always has
- 12:21that like upper crust Margaret DuMont voice who's ever playing
- 12:24her. But they just kind of are like
- 12:27whatever who's ever available. So I I don't know if it's just
- 12:31that most of the performers were men.
- 12:33So it's like, oh, the female characters can just.
- 12:36Go anywhere. Can just be played by whoever I
- 12:38I guess. Well, something that's funny is,
- 12:40is that Richard. Like, I I understand that, you
- 12:43know, she gets past back and forth a bit, but Richard plays
- 12:46her for way longer than you'd expect.
- 12:49He's still occasionally playing her.
- 12:50It's up until 1/17 that he's still playing her like way after
- 12:54we've already had like Miss Piggy focused episodes like some
- 12:57of the ones that we're going to talk about.
- 12:59Right. And so one thing that I think is
- 13:02they may have just taped a whole bunch of sequences at once.
- 13:05So like for at the dance, Richard Hunt plays Piggy for all
- 13:08of the at the dance spots for the first half of the season and
- 13:11then in 115 he switches to a different female pig and on and
- 13:17vets hospital like Hunt and Oz kind of like share them for most
- 13:20of the season it goes back and forth.
- 13:22So like episode one O 5 is Hunt, episode one O 9 is Oz.
- 13:25Because Richard isn't playing Janice yet.
- 13:27Yeah, no. So he's like half of the time
- 13:29he's playing Miss Piggy, Nurse Piggy in Vets Hospital and then
- 13:33Hunt does Vets Hospital in 117 and then that's the the last
- 13:36time in the season after that. She's entirely Frank Oz.
- 13:39Yeah. So I bet they did shoot a bunch
- 13:41of vets, hospitals in a row, right?
- 13:42Like that would make sense. I would imagine that at the
- 13:45dance at least, yeah. But yeah, Frank is Frank is
- 13:47playing George and Mildred in most of those.
- 13:49Yeah, that's true. So here she comes, singing
- 13:52Temptation to Kermit and she's forcing her way through the
- 13:54crowd. This is Piggy's great advantage
- 14:21in the show. I think there's something
- 14:23brilliant that is accidental here.
- 14:25The thing that literally takes her out of the background chorus
- 14:27is that she loves Kermit. Like having her fall in love
- 14:29with Kermit is such a good idea because Kermit is the main
- 14:32character. She could not have chosen a more
- 14:34productive storyline to the extent that is the only enduring
- 14:37storyline that The Muppets ever have.
- 14:40I mean, I guess so storyline now that you say it, yeah, because
- 14:43like, Fozzie is not funny. It's not a story.
- 14:45It's not a storyline. Yeah, don't get chased by Doc
- 14:48Hopper forever. Like Gonzo doesn't have a thing
- 14:50with Camilla that like last as a story.
- 14:53Right. It's just kind of in and out.
- 14:55Every once in a while we'll see something about Godzilla and
- 14:57Camilla. Or not, yeah.
- 14:59But unrequited romance? It offers endless story
- 15:01potential. Well, just I think you'll, I'm
- 15:03sure you'll talk about this in later episodes, but like then it
- 15:06all leads up to that period in the 80s where it kind of feels
- 15:09like they're married like it does, it does feel like an arc
- 15:13that like starts here and ends with I got you Marine, the Mink.
- 15:16You know, say Manhattan or Oh yeah.
- 15:18No, I I think it ends with family Christmas.
- 15:20Where they where they essentially are a married couple
- 15:23and Kermit spends the whole special like worrying that his
- 15:26wife is going to show up so he can give her his Christmas
- 15:28present. Like there's no no sense at all
- 15:31of like the chase of of Piggy Go being after Kermit and him not
- 15:36wanting. Like he just misses her and
- 15:38wants her there from from from minute one in That special, you
- 15:41know? No, I think you're totally right
- 15:43that that that arc really, yeah, it does go until 1989 and then
- 15:46in the 90s they just started mixing it up again.
- 15:50Is there is there anything that you want to say about
- 15:52temptation? One thing about temptation is I
- 15:54this is this is online muppet fan stuff.
- 15:56You can cut this if you want, but I remember, do you remember
- 16:01this? Back in the old days, there was
- 16:02like a rumor that the whole thing was ad libbed.
- 16:05That is a thing, yeah. Yeah, people would say that
- 16:07like, oh, Piggy was just supposed to be a a background
- 16:12character, but then Frank Oz ad libbed the whole thing.
- 16:16Which one? If it's not Frank, it's Richard.
- 16:18And to like, no, That's what the whole sketch is about.
- 16:21Yeah, it's clearly not the case, because there's no there's no
- 16:24joke otherwise. Right.
- 16:26Yeah. So people are silly I guess is
- 16:29my is my thought. Well, I think people get it
- 16:31mixed up with the other legend, which is the next thing we're
- 16:34going to talk about in episode 104, the Ruth Buzzi episode.
- 16:38Backstage plot for this episode is there's a mechanical wind up
- 16:40TV show host that's just Kermit. It's just Kermit.
- 16:44With a big wind up key in his back, which is super cute I
- 16:47know. Late in the episode Piggy makes
- 16:49her appearance the the the mechanical Kermit has been
- 16:51causing some chaos backstage. She is waiting for Kermit
- 16:55outside a dressing room door. He opens the door.
- 17:00Oh, light of my life, front of my heart at last we are alone.
- 17:06So this is now the first time that we see how Miss Piggy
- 17:09actually speaks to Kermit, and it's like that.
- 17:13It is very over at. It is like, it is absurd.
- 17:16It's it feels very like 8th grade Renfair enthusiast Piggy.
- 17:20You know, like. And then she does it when she's
- 17:23alone as well. Because Kermit leaves, she goes
- 17:26into the dressing room. The line that I wrote down in
- 17:28the dressing room is, oh, wretched day for a pig in her
- 17:31prime to be the scorned, which is like feels like Pogo or
- 17:37something, you know it's some. Kind of melodrama.
- 17:40Yeah, I guess so, yeah. That's how I'm thinking about
- 17:42it, yeah. Or like a little bit of pesty
- 17:45Shakespeare or something. Yeah, yeah, it it it doesn't
- 17:48feel loose enough to be Piggy as we would come to know her.
- 17:51Well, definitely not. Oh how I long to hear my love
- 17:55whisper sweet passion. And she's doing this in private
- 17:59like this isn't this isn't for sure.
- 18:00She's really like this. So it's marking her out as this
- 18:03extremely theatrical character who has like a melodrama that's
- 18:06happening in her head. Yeah.
- 18:09And so we hardly know anything about Miss Piggy at this point.
- 18:12But but the one thing that we know is that she is fantasizing.
- 18:16Like not just for Kermit's sake, but because this is what she
- 18:19does. And The funny thing is, I don't
- 18:22think there's anything, you know, you and I are both like,
- 18:25what does this sound like? Like what is this?
- 18:27And I think it's possible that that this is just a new thing
- 18:31that happened in the world. I don't know.
- 18:35I don't know if there was anything like this in history
- 18:36before. Well, I mean, this is much
- 18:38later, but like, did you watch Hey Arnold?
- 18:41I did not. Probably too old for hey Arnold.
- 18:44Yeah, you're like a decade older than me.
- 18:47Helga the character Helga Pataki, whose whole thing is
- 18:49that she's a bully, but she's in love with Arnold.
- 18:52Will do this as soon as she's alone.
- 18:53She's always like my sweet Arnold, the Prince of my heart.
- 18:58That foot, that football shaped head, fills me with delight or
- 19:02whatever. That's that's what this feels
- 19:04like to me. Yeah, like, like, so maybe she
- 19:07is just being season one episode 4 Miss Piggy for some reason.
- 19:10But it like suggests that it's like, just like you mentioned
- 19:14Shakespeare. It feels like theatrical
- 19:16longing, you know? And Piggy's in a theater.
- 19:20I mean, we don't know how long she's had this job, you know?
- 19:23I mean Piggy. Piggy.
- 19:25This job has made her more theatrical.
- 19:27Well, I think Piggy has such theater kid energy anyway.
- 19:30Yes, yeah. You know, and so like here where
- 19:33she's young, it makes total sense to me that she's just like
- 19:37writing. Poetic drama, kid.
- 19:40Lines for herself backstage. Yeah, you know, that checks out
- 19:43I think. Yeah, absolutely.
- 19:44She's rehearsing, always rehearsing.
- 19:47So Robot Kermit shows up and Robot Kermit is horny for Miss
- 19:51Piggy. Like, This is why a generative
- 19:53AI is a problem. Is this right here?
- 19:56Hey, listen, yo, hey, yo, how about you and me getting
- 19:59together and making some steam heat?
- 20:04Snuggle Bunny. Yeah, look, look, look, Let me
- 20:07take you away from all this. A marriage made in heaven.
- 20:11A frog and a pig. We could have bouncing baby
- 20:13figs. I I had forgotten that it was a
- 20:17robot Kermit who said bouncing baby figs, by the way.
- 20:20That that's the first time that that comes up.
- 20:22Yeah, that. That's where it comes.
- 20:23From It's the robot's idea, Yeah, yeah.
- 20:25And then he whispers sweet nothings into her ear, which
- 20:29apparently are really they are very much sweet somethings,
- 20:31because she gets offended by it. Yeah, she's like horrified.
- 20:34Yeah, I I honestly, I remembered the punchline of this scene as
- 20:38being that. Like she's enthralled and then
- 20:40the real Kermit shows up and and ruins it for her.
- 20:43But that's not what it is. Yeah, no, she's pissed off.
- 20:46She's horrified. But right.
- 20:48And this is the legendary karate chop.
- 20:50It was supposed to be a slap. And the story is that in
- 20:53rehearsal Frank Oz kind of for he, he has said basically like
- 20:58kind of for some reason and the and the some reason is because
- 21:01Frank Oz is always trying to plus his material.
- 21:03He turns it into a karate chop and it was hilarious.
- 21:07And so that's what they do on the show and she karate chops
- 21:09him to the ground and then she stamps on him several times.
- 21:13It is violent and it is very funny.
- 21:17Piggy piggy. Let me explain.
- 21:20Explain this. She hasn't found the low growl
- 21:30in her voice yet. She's still like always high
- 21:32falsetto. But the stamping, I think, is
- 21:34what makes her really like masculine and aggressive in
- 21:37this. This is something like, I want
- 21:39to talk a little bit about kind of like Battle of the Sexes
- 21:42comedy, because that's what this is.
- 21:44And I think people these days, this is the thing that is now
- 21:48happening on the Internet, that people are complaining about
- 21:52Miss Piggy, like the boy chasing.
- 21:54Like, it's not just saying that he's cute, Like, she comes for
- 21:56him, she like leaps on him, she pins him to the ground, he runs
- 22:00away and she chases him off stage like she does not leave
- 22:03the lizard alone. And so the reading of that has
- 22:07become kind of more complex in the modern world.
- 22:09But at the time, this was just like battle of the sexist
- 22:12comedy. So I'm wondering if you can, if
- 22:14you have thoughts on that? Sure.
- 22:16Well, you. I remember when you asked me to
- 22:18come on the show you they asked me to think of movie characters
- 22:24from like the 30s and 40s who feel like antecedents for Miss
- 22:27Piggy. Right.
- 22:29And the first thing that came to mind is Barbara Stanwyck and the
- 22:33Lady, the The President Sturgis movie, which I I know, I know
- 22:38you're a Sturgis fan as well. Maybe that's why it was the
- 22:40first one to come to mind. But she plays a con woman in the
- 22:43movie who is trying to win over this heir, this beer, beer ale,
- 22:50right? Isn't it Henry Fonda?
- 22:53Yeah, he's an heir to an ale fortune on this cruise ship.
- 22:57And she just keeps coming for him like he, Henry Fonda is such
- 23:02a like milquetoast, just like he's just like a befuddled every
- 23:07man he's. A real innocent he's Yeah, he's
- 23:10been up to Amazon looking for snakes for like 10 years and
- 23:13doesn't really know how to deal with women, right?
- 23:16And she just like keeps coming for him.
- 23:19There are like multiple scenes in that movie of her like on top
- 23:23of him and him not knowing what like physically on top of him
- 23:27and and him not knowing what to do, you know.
- 23:31And I want to Sorry to spoil an an 82 year old masterpiece.
- 23:36Everyone should see it like no. One watched the.
- 23:39Lady Eve Watch Lady Eve. It's Yeah, but like at one point
- 23:43she convinces him that she's not herself, but another lady who
- 23:47looks like her, basically so that she can seduce him again.
- 23:51Like. Basically like having him, him
- 23:55having escaped from her clutches.
- 23:57She's like, I need a new angle. I'm going to pretend that I'm
- 24:00not the same person so I can do it again, which feels like Piggy
- 24:04obviously didn't do that thing, but like, it feels very piggy.
- 24:07It feels very like, like like the pursuit cannot end because I
- 24:11have failed once, you know. Yeah, I need to.
- 24:14Come back and come back in a even more glamorous way.
- 24:17Which is right, exactly, yeah. Yeah.
- 24:20And, like, so that. That's one example.
- 24:22But there are a lot of romantic comedies from the 30s and 40s
- 24:26especially, that that are centered on, like, here's a
- 24:30brassy Dame and A and a befuddled man who doesn't know
- 24:34how to deal with this of this, like, rush of affection.
- 24:39And so that's what Kermit and Piggy are.
- 24:42That's exactly what Kermit and Piggy are.
- 24:45This. It's it's screwball comedy,
- 24:46basically. Yeah, it's it's exactly
- 24:48screwball comedy. And it's again, yeah, you're
- 24:51right. It's not a setup that really
- 24:53exists anymore. Like once once second wave
- 24:55feminism came in, we don't, you know what I mean?
- 24:58Like it's it's like a very like like pre women's Lib thing for
- 25:06like. Where the where the comedy comes
- 25:07from. Essentially this is a woman on
- 25:09top in this relationship. She's the the dominant force in
- 25:13the relationship and she and she stays there basically in in like
- 25:1730s and 40s screwball comedies. Like she stays there just by
- 25:19talking faster and way more. Right, exactly.
- 25:23If she's faster and funnier than the guy is, then then, you know,
- 25:26Katharine Hepburn is sort of like striding around in the
- 25:28world and and Cary Grant is sort of like a little puppy chasing
- 25:32at me. Like, wait, but what?
- 25:34What are you what are you doing to my life?
- 25:35Yeah. Right.
- 25:36Bring Bringing Up Baby, Of course, you just mentioned is
- 25:39another one that's like that. And actually, Speaking of
- 25:42Bringing Up Baby, five years before this started, What's Up
- 25:48Doc is basically a remake of Bringing Up Baby, where I think
- 25:53that's kind of the last time that that really happened, where
- 25:55where Ryan O'Neal is like a boring scientist who just wants
- 25:59to think about his rocks. And Barbara Stanwyck just kind
- 26:03of comes in like a whirlwind, talks about all the colleges she
- 26:06got kicked out of. You know, you know her like just
- 26:10kind of like he. There's a there's a scene in
- 26:12What's Up, Doc? We want to talk about Miss
- 26:14Piggy. There's a scene in What's Up,
- 26:17Doc? Where Ryan O'Neal wanders into
- 26:19an empty room in an unfinished skyscraper, sees a tarp over a
- 26:24piano, pulls it off. Barbra Streisand is laying on
- 26:29the piano and tells him to play as time goes by so she can sing
- 26:35it. And then she does.
- 26:38And then they're like she like rolls off of the piano onto him,
- 26:42talks about all the colleges she got kicked out of.
- 26:45She keeps talking until they kiss and you know that's that's
- 26:51not that far off. I haven't.
- 26:52Seen. Now I have to.
- 26:53I have to go see what's up You've.
- 26:54Never seen what's up, Doc? Oh man, you really got to see
- 26:58what's up, Doc. Like, yeah, apparently.
- 27:00That's that's that's just one delightful scene of many yeah.
- 27:03But anyways there are a lot of I mean I think when when we when
- 27:09you asked me to think about this like I know I talked about
- 27:12Carole Lombard and nothing sacred.
- 27:14Carole Lombard is another actress who who has real Miss
- 27:19Piggy energy. Like she always feels like she's
- 27:21in charge no matter what movie she's in.
- 27:24I I mean, something like to be or not to be isn't a very
- 27:28muppety set up. Obviously it's set during the
- 27:30Holocaust and it gets very serious, but it's still like
- 27:33Jack Benny's the husband and he's a goofball and Carole
- 27:37Lombard's in charge all the time, you know?
- 27:40Being in charge is is being in charge in these movies?
- 27:42Is it just the? Is it just verbally or is there
- 27:45also some physical? Well, nothing secret actually.
- 27:48Has the scene where she and Frederick March both punch each
- 27:51other out. Yes.
- 27:52Which feels feels like almost transgressive now.
- 27:56Like you wouldn't. Yeah, you can't imagine both.
- 27:59Or a back in. Comedy strike each other in the
- 28:00face. Right.
- 28:01It's like, it's like and it's and it's like a comedy scene.
- 28:04Yeah, Yeah. I mean, it's like, it's like
- 28:06funny face, mutual face punches to show that they're falling in
- 28:09love, you know, and and and I think that's why I thought of
- 28:13nothing sacred, because that feels like Piggy.
- 28:17Carole Lombard punching Frederick March in the face more
- 28:19than anything feels like Miss Piggy.
- 28:21You know, yeah. What?
- 28:24What else? Well, I I think I thought about
- 28:25the actress Glenda Farrell who played played the journalist
- 28:28torture. But did you ever get around to a
- 28:29Glenda Farrell movie? I.
- 28:30Saw. Yes, I saw some of those.
- 28:32Or I saw like some parts. I saw some scenes.
- 28:34Sure. And with her, what reminds me
- 28:37about Piggy of Glenda Farrell is that she's very glamorous.
- 28:40She's very beautiful. Yes, she is.
- 28:42She's a real cutie. I mean, I like, but she often
- 28:47has this, like, masculine edge to her where anytime she needs
- 28:51to take control, it's like her voice drops and she's just like,
- 28:54all right Buster, let's get to work, you know?
- 28:57Which feels very, very like Piggy to me.
- 29:00She's, and she's a she's Glenda Farrell.
- 29:03She plays Torchy Blaine. That was her series and.
- 29:06She was like a a gal reporter. Right.
- 29:09Which, which I want to say it was Jerry Siegel in 1988 during
- 29:14the the Superman 50th anniversary stuff like in an
- 29:17interview specifically cited Torchy Blaine as an inspiration
- 29:21for Lois Lane. Yes.
- 29:22That that's that's not just conjecture.
- 29:23It's like, you know, I was, I was, yeah, like we were, we we
- 29:27were watching these movies and and we liked the idea, you know,
- 29:31basically. So and there's and, you know,
- 29:33Lois Lane and Miss Piggy have some similarities as well, I
- 29:36think. So I think that there's just
- 29:38this big Stew of like strong willed female characters in the
- 29:46mid 20th century. Yeah, that that piggy grows out
- 29:49of. And I mean, I love all that
- 29:52stuff, you know, obviously, like, I'm sitting here citing
- 29:54plot details from multiple 30s and 40s comedies, but there's
- 29:58just something about that type of heroine, you know, as as just
- 30:04just maybe because it's not, it's not really a character type
- 30:07you can do anymore. I do think it's interesting that
- 30:10Piggy has kept it alive to some degree.
- 30:13Yeah, that she still is that like screwball comedy character.
- 30:16Yeah, and great. Muppet Caper is a screwball
- 30:18comedy movie 100%. That's actually.
- 30:21Yeah. And she's perfectly in that role
- 30:23of like the dominant woman and and it has like mistaken
- 30:26identity. And everyone is like hurrying to
- 30:29cover things up, like her climbing up the the the house on
- 30:33Highbrow St. and pretending that's her house.
- 30:36That's that's a screwball comedy moment.
- 30:37That's totally a Barbara Stanwyck move.
- 30:40Like, I think that's why Great Muppet Keeper is my favorite
- 30:43Muppet movie. Now, now that we're talking
- 30:44about it, like it feels like this era of film that I that I
- 30:48really love that we both. Yeah, that you and I can like
- 30:52we're going, we're going deep into screwball comedy and we're
- 30:54both just loving it so much. Exactly, exactly.
- 30:57I guess, I guess the the message for this part of the podcast is
- 31:00just for all the folks who have been like, wait, what is this?
- 31:04What's going on? Let's just tell them the movies
- 31:06that you got to see Bringing Up Baby, you got to see The Lady
- 31:08Eve, go and watch these movies. If you have not watched them,
- 31:10they are actually excellent. And and what's up doc for a
- 31:13newer 1. And what's up, Doc?
- 31:15And the Great Muppet Game. And the Great Muppet Keeper.
- 31:18If you're listening to this podcast and you haven't seen the
- 31:19Great Muppet Keeper, like I I know podcasts will say, like,
- 31:23stop right now and go do it. But come on.
- 31:26No, we don't watch the stop. Nobody, nobody, nobody stop
- 31:28right now. But when we're done, we'll be
- 31:30done at some point someday. Anthony, I have faith that
- 31:34someday you and I will be done with this conversation.
- 31:37I'm not sure when that's going to be.
- 31:40And then we can watch Great Muppet Keeper.
- 31:42So episode one O 6, the Jim Neighbors episode, maybe
- 31:45something extremely peculiar. The one thing that we know about
- 31:49Piggy from Like Temptation and from this karate chop scene, she
- 31:52is hopelessly in love with Kermit and so as soon as that's
- 31:56established they immediately complicate it by having her
- 31:59express love for somebody else. She just comes right out of the
- 32:02gate being surprising and multi dimensional.
- 32:06There is a talk spot with Kermit and Jim Neighbors where Jim says
- 32:10that as a country boy he likes being around all the chickens
- 32:13and the pigs, especially that Miss Piggy.
- 32:14I just love her and she immediately.
- 32:17That was my Jim Neighbors impressions.
- 32:18Pretty good. It was good.
- 32:19It was good. And she immediately dashes to
- 32:21his side. Right.
- 32:23Especially that Miss Piggy. I just love her.
- 32:25Oh, Piggy Billy, you called. My love Hey, Miss Piggy.
- 32:28And so now she is in love with James James for the first time.
- 32:34She gives a guest star a more formal version of his name and
- 32:38for the first time expresses passion for a guest star when
- 32:41the sketch continues like Jim does some loud opera singing
- 32:43which blows Kermit like right off his seat and and Piggy says
- 32:47well. He doesn't appreciate classical
- 32:50music dreams, but it drives me bananas.
- 32:59So I feel like this is this is pioneering new forms of personal
- 33:03expression and that is the thing that Miss Piggy does.
- 33:07Well, I like how Jim Nabors seems like so amused by all of
- 33:13this. Like, there's one line where she
- 33:16talks about being born at Becker's butcher shop and he
- 33:19just kind of goes bug eyed, you know, he's like startled.
- 33:23And it seems like it's because like he's just, it seems like he
- 33:27was thinking of her as a person. You know, like, like we we
- 33:30should probably know Jim Nabors, famously gay, came out of the
- 33:33closet decades later. Was was already with his future
- 33:38husband at this time. Oh, I didn't.
- 33:41Know that got married in 2013, but they they've been together
- 33:43since 1975. His his his husband Stan.
- 33:47So like, obviously Jim Nabors the real life guy isn't going to
- 33:51be like Miss Piggy. What an attractive woman.
- 33:53Or you know, or whatever. Sexually at least.
- 33:56But he seems so delighted to to be doing this sketch with this
- 34:01pig hitting on him. Well, like any gay man, would
- 34:04you have? Well, exactly like that's what
- 34:06I'm saying. Like this is the first one, This
- 34:08is the first time. That Miss Piggy makes first
- 34:11contact with the enemy, first contact with the gay man, and he
- 34:16is delighted with her. Yeah, as he as we all are.
- 34:21Oh, that's so funny. And I like that.
- 34:23Once again, Piggy is going for the highest status guy in the
- 34:27room, and that is going to be a pattern for her that it's
- 34:31Kermit. Like Kermit is the boss.
- 34:32But then whenever there's a guest star, a hot guest star,
- 34:35hot male guest star, I should say.
- 34:37Even if he's not hot, this is Jim Nabors now.
- 34:40Right. Like, not, not to knock him, but
- 34:42like he's going, no. You are you are right.
- 34:44No one thinks of him as as like a a hot man.
- 34:47I don't think he doesn't stand visibly.
- 34:49Yeah, he. Does episode 107 is the first?
- 34:54This is the Florence Henderson episode.
- 34:55This is the first episode that you might say is like, that's a
- 34:58Miss Piggy episode. Like she's got a backstage plot
- 35:01that lasts for most of the episode.
- 35:03Such as they were at that time. Like it's not, it's not the most
- 35:06plot heavy Muppet Show well and it's also like kind of a pig
- 35:10heavy episode in general. We have the we have the pig
- 35:16daredevils stacking up on. Yeah, you know, And there's just
- 35:19a lot of, like, pig, pig sketches, I feel like.
- 35:23So she comes up backstage. There's the pig.
- 35:26Acrobats have been have been on stage, and Kermit is yelling at
- 35:29them. Move.
- 35:29It move it. Get out of here.
- 35:31Out, out, out. Out.
- 35:32Out. You have such a masculine yell.
- 35:36Is. Is there anything at all,
- 35:37anything I could do for you, my dear?
- 35:40No. Because I want to make you
- 35:41happy. When you're happy, the pig is
- 35:45happy. Which I just love as a lion.
- 35:49Right. Well, and I love it, because
- 35:50what it also means is that she immediately aggressively attacks
- 35:55him with what I have written in my notes described as 1,000,000
- 35:59Kisses 'cause she's just all over him.
- 36:03Yeah, yeah, she is like, Yep, literally just leaps on top of
- 36:07him. And she makes snorting noises.
- 36:11She makes like pig noises, which you would never think of her
- 36:15doing that now, but like that actually comes up a few times
- 36:18that she makes like pig. Which, but it seems like it's
- 36:20only when she's like, real excited like.
- 36:23Oh yeah. No, that's her.
- 36:24That's her. We are getting into it.
- 36:26Yeah, we are getting into it. Noise for sure.
- 36:30So Kermit's kind of crushed. And that sketch or that, that
- 36:35scene, I should say, there's no real resolution to that.
- 36:38She just gets up and she says forgive me for being so forward,
- 36:42but I'm a liberated pig TA and this just goes away.
- 36:46The end of the scene and Kermit's just crushed.
- 36:49And then there's the talk spot. Kermit and Florence are flirting
- 36:53with each other because, again, this is just a thing that they
- 36:56do on The Muppet Show of just like The Muppets are horny like
- 37:00a lot of the time. All the time, yeah.
- 37:02And so here comes Piggy. Well, well, well.
- 37:07While the pig's away, the frog will play.
- 37:11Hi Peggy, Don't hide Piggy me, you frog stealer.
- 37:15Now they're kind of having a fight.
- 37:16Now she's picking a fight with Florence Henderson.
- 37:19The thing that's. She calls her.
- 37:20She calls her frog stealer Florence Henderson.
- 37:24To be clear, in case listeners don't know the mom from The
- 37:28Brady Bunch, a show that is over by this, like, this isn't like,
- 37:32this isn't young ingenue Florence Henderson.
- 37:34This is like, T mom TV mom Florence Henderson.
- 37:38What I like, though, is that one Florence makes a few jokes
- 37:42during this, you know, Piggy says I'm like, putty in your
- 37:46hands or whatever, right? And then Florence Henderson
- 37:49calls her a cement mixer. That's that's a song.
- 37:54That's a song. Oh, OK, I didn't know that.
- 37:56But either way, I like that Piggy glares at her just 'cause
- 38:00she can't stand another woman making jokes.
- 38:03Like in in front of the Frog, you know?
- 38:06But then Florence Henderson also kind of seems to be on Piggy's
- 38:10side, because when Piggy calls her a frog stealer, she, like,
- 38:14completely sells Kermit out. She's just like, it wasn't me.
- 38:19It was this guy, you know. Yeah, yeah, she's ready to have,
- 38:23like, a whole conversation about it.
- 38:24Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, she's yeah, she's she's
- 38:27there for it. Yeah, so Kermit has disappeared
- 38:29by this point. Piggy kind of rushes off to find
- 38:32her love, and Florence is laughing and and says that she's
- 38:36crazy. Kermit comes back up and she
- 38:38touches him on the arm and then Piggy runs in and says I told
- 38:43you not to touch him, and karate chops her.
- 38:46So that's this is the second karate chop, and it's a guest
- 38:48star. And then Piggy bites Florence on
- 38:51the arm. Her season piggy is an absolute
- 38:55lunatic. She is more dangerous than
- 38:58animal and Crazy Harry combined like she will do anything.
- 39:02I don't think there's another. There's another example of a
- 39:05Muppet, just like straight up biting a guest star because they
- 39:10get mad at him going backstage. She grabs him again.
- 39:15Oh karma. Every time you yell it sends a
- 39:18shudder through my body. I tremble with desire and
- 39:23uncontrollable passion. And just like basically just
- 39:27keeps doing melodrama, dialogue. Adam.
- 39:29Yeah, yeah, yeah, until he just he blows up.
- 39:32Now they they can't keep doing this, just having her jump on
- 39:36him. So they're gonna need to find
- 39:37more things for her to do. But we are 7 episodes into the
- 39:41show and they have at least they have figured this part out.
- 39:44Right. Charles Asnovor, Episode One O.
- 39:489 Asnovor Yes, the French Frank Sinatra.
- 39:52Here he is. Yeah, in his talk spots, this is
- 39:54another miss Piggy goes in and messes with the guest star.
- 39:58Yep. And so this is a big moment,
- 39:59'cause this is this is the moment when Piggy learns about
- 40:03speaking French. Yeah, it's a brand new concept
- 40:06for. Yeah, Charles is talking to
- 40:08Kermit about speaking French and how romantic people find French.
- 40:11So romantic, Charles Azenboris like calls Miss Piggy over and
- 40:15Kermit says she she doesn't speak a word of French.
- 40:18And so. That's startling now, like,
- 40:21'cause she always kind of doesn't speak much French, but
- 40:24like, she loves to act as though she does.
- 40:27I believe that starts in the second season.
- 40:29This is the origin. This must be.
- 40:33Yes, Charles, hey. Listen, you really got to her.
- 40:49What did you say? Well, I I said your oil filter
- 40:51has a leak and your transmission is second.
- 40:55She is so into it. She gets real turned.
- 40:59On breathing so heavily. And she And in the end she jumps
- 41:04on him and she just kisses and kisses him.
- 41:06There's more oinking so. Million kisses.
- 41:08Yeah, he's. Still doing that?
- 41:09Yeah. A million kisses.
- 41:10And then she rushes off because she's just she has lost control
- 41:13of herself completely. Kermit tries to apologize, and
- 41:17Charles Adsenfor says sorry. I just met the girl of my dreams
- 41:20and then he kind of walks off looking for her.
- 41:24Yeah, and then then Now they're married still and.
- 41:27Now they're married. So here I think this sketch is
- 41:29important because here I think is the 1st place where the
- 41:33audience might start to get the message that maybe Piggy is
- 41:36fantastic rather than annoying. That like here's a here is a
- 41:41character that is interpreting this behavior in a more positive
- 41:44way. Which celebrities will do a lot?
- 41:48Oh yeah, so this is going to keep coming up.
- 41:50Yeah. And this the first time when
- 41:51she's really when she has made her first actual conquest.
- 41:55We all do. We want to say that she karate
- 41:56chops Kermit and calls him a barbarian at the end.
- 42:00Why don't you say that yes. 'Cause I like that that she he
- 42:03Kermit says one man's poison is another man's bacon To to
- 42:07Charles Asneworth, Piggy comes in karate chops and looks down
- 42:10at him and says Barbarian, which is, I think is such a funny
- 42:16moment, and also like she's the one who violently attacked him.
- 42:19You know, Yep. And it's so like, I don't know,
- 42:22It's good piggy material. It feels like they're really
- 42:25figuring her out here, you know, that like she can she can stomp
- 42:28Kermit to the ground and then call him a barbarian.
- 42:30And it makes total sense. And at the same time, she can
- 42:33seduce Charles Aznavour that she is just this this boiling pot of
- 42:38emotion, and that's something really different that she is
- 42:41bringing to The Muppet Show. I don't think any other
- 42:43character has feelings on that level.
- 42:48Gonzo, I guess, would be the other one.
- 42:50Gonzo really is. Is, yeah, Gonzo does.
- 42:52Involved with his. Feelings and all that, yeah, In
- 42:54this season. I think those are the two and
- 42:56they and they both turn into major characters.
- 42:59Neither of them are necessarily set up that way from the start
- 43:02that everybody thought that those two were going to be main
- 43:05characters. It was mostly, I think people
- 43:06knew like Kermit and Fosse, and I think that's something that
- 43:09actually that both Piggy and Gonzo do in the first season to
- 43:12kind of establish themselves is that they are, they become
- 43:14characters who have real feelings.
- 43:16So episode 111 with Lena Horne. This is the first time that
- 43:21she's expressing concern about her career where she asks Kermit
- 43:26why she's not doing her song tonight and Kermit's answer is.
- 43:30Well, Peggy, because Lena Horne is our guest this week.
- 43:33And how can I say this? There are singers and there are
- 43:36singers. You catch my drift?
- 43:40Oh, and and you don't want me to over shadow.
- 43:45It was hard. Of course you're right.
- 43:47What a considerate frog. She's excited about that, like
- 43:54she a little bit later on in the backstage sketch, she says.
- 43:56The consideration you've shown Lena Horne has only reinforced
- 44:00my undying love for you. Yeah.
- 44:03And then it turns into chaos and violence.
- 44:06Kermit talks to Scooter about it, and Kermit tells Scooter
- 44:09that sometimes in this business you have to be ruthless,
- 44:12merciless and cruel. He's teaching Scooter how to how
- 44:14to succeed in show business. What?
- 44:18Oh, I'm sorry. You see, I I've got to be
- 44:20ruthless, merciless and cruel. Cruel.
- 44:24I'll show you, cruel kid. Never told me about this part
- 44:30part. This cruel.
- 44:37And then Piggy attacks him. Yep, for stating Kermit's actual
- 44:41opinion, that's what I like. It's not even in his opinion
- 44:45that's true. It's just that like.
- 44:47Kermit is you are you are pissing me off.
- 44:50Kermit's a good producer, you know, Like, he knows how to talk
- 44:53to his his talent. He should not have been running
- 44:56his mouth like that with Scooter.
- 44:57That's the that's his big mistake.
- 45:00And then she does it again with Kermit.
- 45:02Where Piggy? Where Kermit?
- 45:03Says Piggy. Sometimes the truth hurts, she
- 45:05says hurt. I'll show you hurt.
- 45:08And then she karate chops in. So this is now.
- 45:10I feel like this is the episode that that really just makes the
- 45:13karate chop into a thing. Right.
- 45:16This we, I think we're expected to recognize it.
- 45:18Yeah, like. At this point you just you have
- 45:20to watch what you say and what you what you do with Miss Piggy
- 45:23or she'll cut you in half before this.
- 45:26Like I think that I that I think is interesting about about this
- 45:28episode is before this everything was about romance.
- 45:31Even when she karate chop Kermit before it was about romance
- 45:34where he's just insulted her. This is the first one that's a
- 45:38karate chop for business reasons.
- 45:40Right, you're right. So, so she is now becoming
- 45:42formidable, like she's becoming a a a dangerous presence in the
- 45:47show backstage. It's now not just it is now free
- 45:50floating aggression. It is not only about her romance
- 45:53with Kermit but now now she's becoming a terrifying force.
- 45:57And then there's there are three piggy songs right after that all
- 46:01in a bunch in the mid middle of the season.
- 46:03So in episode 112, she does auk spot where she sings another
- 46:07Somebody Done Somebody Wrong song And 1:13 with Bruce Forsyth
- 46:11she sings Let there Be Love. And then 1/15, she she finally
- 46:14gets her own opening number where she sings what now, My
- 46:17Love? And so it it feels like here
- 46:20they have, they have realized like, oh wait, Miss Piggy's a
- 46:22thing and she's supposed to be a singer.
- 46:25And we haven't actually had her sing anything yet.
- 46:28She's just been talking about it.
- 46:30Maybe let's give Piggy some song.
- 46:33Man, I feel like I asked you to. To watch the the Bruce Forsyth
- 46:36that won the The Let There Be Love.
- 46:39Right. So I mentioned at the top of
- 46:42this podcast that temptation was the thing that I heard before I
- 46:46saw. Right.
- 46:47And I don't think that's the case here.
- 46:49I mean, it must have been, I heard all those season one
- 46:50songs, but I didn't like, latch on to Bruce Forsyth and Piggy at
- 46:55that time, right? But when my wife Roz and I first
- 47:00started dating in 2009 I this is this is pretty late for this to
- 47:05happen. But it happened.
- 47:06I burned her a mixed CD 'cause we one of the first things we
- 47:10bonded over was The Muppets, right.
- 47:12And I burned her ACD of all Muppet love songs.
- 47:16So it's so it's your I mean it's never before never again and
- 47:19it's the first time it happens and and gonna always love you
- 47:21and all that kind of stuff. But also Let There Be Love by
- 47:25Piggy and Bruce Forsyth and Love in a laundromat by Gonzo and.
- 47:29Camilla. And like all this silly stuff
- 47:32I'd give my soul by Moki Fraggle right about Boguni.
- 47:36And no wonder she fell for you. It's that's right.
- 47:39That's right. That's.
- 47:40Beautiful and much like Piggy and Charles Asnovor, We are
- 47:43married still, so I've heard. Let there be love 'cause we'll
- 47:47put that on in the car sometimes on road trips, I've heard Let
- 47:50there be love so many more times than I've seen it, you know?
- 47:55And so watching it yesterday for this podcast, what struck me the
- 48:00most was I think of when Piggy goes love between Bruce and the
- 48:04pig. Love, love, love, love or
- 48:06whatever. Like, that feels so much like
- 48:09that thing she's gonna do later on The Muppet Show where she's,
- 48:11like furiously kissing Elton John's chest.
- 48:15Or like she and Kris Kristofferson look like they're
- 48:18about to go get a room in an episode with his wife as the
- 48:21other guest star, You know? Yeah.
- 48:25So in my mind, it's like piggy, like aggressively flirting with
- 48:28Bruce Forsyth, but it's not. They don't touch.
- 48:30They both are in stationary positions and they don't touch
- 48:33one another. So it's just like the the like
- 48:38memory of other later Piggy duets.
- 48:41Like, it's just like how I imagine this one being.
- 48:43Stitched. Well, this one it's, you know,
- 48:46they can't, she can't move towards him because for the
- 48:49first time she's actually. Sitting.
- 48:51She's. Sitting in a very in a very
- 48:52glamorous pose next to Bruce at the piano and showing her legs
- 48:56and her feet, which is amazing, and the guest star is singing a
- 48:59romantic song specifically for her.
- 49:01And it's, I mean it's Bruce Forsyth who we should, we should
- 49:06note maybe for listeners isn't really a singer.
- 49:09I mean he's ATV host. He's a, he's like ATV presenter
- 49:12in England. He's not he's not really a a
- 49:15singer. He's not really a comedian.
- 49:17But he did this, he did this very well, I feel.
- 49:19He. No, he does do this very well
- 49:21and I think he's very charming in the episode.
- 49:23But it's like it's not like this is like some heartthrob.
- 49:25This is this is Dick Clark, you know or something.
- 49:28This is British Dick Clark, essentially, you know.
- 49:30Yeah. And I think it's fascinating.
- 49:33But she is putting. Passion to it, yeah.
- 49:35Right. That that that's who it is.
- 49:36And she's still putting passion here and he seems like he's
- 49:38having a great time. Yeah, like, he seems like he's
- 49:40having fun. And so I think this is this is
- 49:42now a direct cue for the audience.
- 49:44I feel like now this is a statement that Miss Piggy is not
- 49:48a completely ridiculous character, and that seeing Miss
- 49:52Piggy as glamorous is more fun than not seeing her as
- 49:55glamorous, right? Sure, you can kind of.
- 49:57You can put her into this pose and people start buying into the
- 50:02fiction because this is funnier than the actual reality.
- 50:05You think this is the one that the the USS cuttlefish?
- 50:09What was it? The USS Bonefish.
- 50:12USS Bonefish, this, you think this is the one that they saw?
- 50:15They were like we got to. I yeah, I feel like this one.
- 50:18I feel like this is involved. If folks are not familiar with
- 50:21this sketch, go and look at episode 113.
- 50:23You will see exactly what As soon as you see it, you will You
- 50:26will say it yourself. This is this is worth getting a
- 50:29whole Navy submarine. Right.
- 50:33Well, and it's all You don't even have to look up the episode
- 50:34on Disney Plus. Like, you can Google Muppet
- 50:37Show, Let there Be Love and like the sketches on YouTube.
- 50:39Oh, that's true. You know you can just watch the
- 50:40sketch. I forget how the Internet works.
- 50:43Yeah, there's a lot of Muppet Show sketches on YouTube.
- 50:45Yeah, there really are now that you say that.
- 50:46Yeah. Yeah, it's not like the old
- 50:49days. It's not like the tape trading
- 50:50days then. Yeah, I know.
- 50:52We were just talking about like making Nick CDs.
- 50:53That kind of brought me back into the back of the past, back
- 50:56into the old days. So episode 116.
- 51:00This is it, Avery Schreiber. This is a big one, yeah.
- 51:03This is so, so I'm going to lay all my cards on the table.
- 51:05This is my favorite episode of season one.
- 51:07I've seen it, except for Vincent Price, which which we watch
- 51:10every year. This is the other season one
- 51:12episode I've seen the most times.
- 51:14I watch it all the time. I went on, I reviewed it for
- 51:17Tough Pigs, and I went on Muppet Turkey's episode about it.
- 51:20Because. I love so much.
- 51:22I just like, here's the thing, I don't know Avery Schreiber
- 51:25outside. Like, I know that Burns and
- 51:27Schreiber comedy team existed. I know Jack Burns was the head
- 51:30writer on season one, you know? But, like, I don't think I've
- 51:33ever seen Burns and Schreiber on stage together.
- 51:36I don't think I've never, like, looked up their clips.
- 51:37Yeah, I know I have not either. But I love him in this episode.
- 51:42Like he seems like he just he, to me, he's one of the 1st guest
- 51:45stars who like, really meshes perfectly with The Muppets
- 51:49comedy wise. Like he just he just gets it,
- 51:53you know, like every single thing he does in this episode,
- 51:57like works with The Muppets. There's not there's no, like,
- 52:01now we're gonna give Avery Schreiber's, you know, 'cause
- 52:03they'll do that, they'll be like, now here's the guest star,
- 52:06just like Steve Martin making blue animals or whatever, which
- 52:09is fine. I I I love Steve.
- 52:11Don't get me wrong, but. He's not.
- 52:14He's not doing Avery Schreiber material.
- 52:15He's doing Muppet material. He's doing Muppet material.
- 52:18Even when he does burns and Schreiber thing, it's with
- 52:20Fozzie, you know, like, and a big part of that is that he
- 52:26seems so delighted to be like bouncing off of Miss Piggy in
- 52:32the in the talk spot, you know? But, and he is supposed to be in
- 52:35on it, on this the the plot is that that she is pulling a trick
- 52:39on Kermit and Avery Sharver is part of that trick and he seems
- 52:42to be delighted to to be doing that.
- 52:44Yeah, he's into it for sure. So what's happened here is that
- 52:49when you first see backstage, Miss Piggy asks Scooter to help
- 52:52her out. This is kind of I what I see
- 52:54this as like the birth of the truck driver in Muppet guys
- 52:58talking in the in that documentary Frank has, he talks
- 53:00about Piggy and he says that when he did the karate chop,
- 53:04that kind of created Piggy for him.
- 53:06And he says because she's really a truck driver underneath.
- 53:10And this episode, I think, is where you really, for the first
- 53:12time like you see that truck driver emerge.
- 53:14Scooter. Scooter.
- 53:16Oh dear. Nephew of the feature owner.
- 53:19Well, yes, Miss Payne. Would you do Miss Piggy a favor?
- 53:23Sure, why not? Well, you may have noticed I
- 53:27have given my love to Kermit. He may also have noticed his
- 53:31reluctance in returning. Same.
- 53:33Oh. So you want me to get your love
- 53:35from Kermit and give it back to you?
- 53:37Oh, OK. Where?
- 53:38Where does he keep it? I'm using Little twit, isn't it?
- 53:45No bonehead. I want you to make him jealous.
- 53:49And that's kind of like the truck driver really coming out
- 53:51for the first time. So something that I think is
- 53:54amazing here is she started the season in that melodrama mode
- 53:59that we were talking about of like, Oh my life, my love frog
- 54:02of my arms. Oh, to see a pig scorned.
- 54:06Right. And now she's saying no bonehead
- 54:09in that with that kind of like masculine growl.
- 54:11This is a very different character from what she was just
- 54:15nine episodes ago, like the Florence Henderson when she was
- 54:19doing that stuff. That was that was 107.
- 54:20This is 116. This is a couple months later.
- 54:25And so then in the talk spot, Kermit's talking to Avery
- 54:27Shriver, and she comes in and basically does that melodrama
- 54:33kind of dialogue again, except this time it's an act.
- 54:39Oh please, please let me just stand here and gaze upon that
- 54:43adorable face. Well, there's no time for that,
- 54:46no matter how adorable you think my face is.
- 54:49Not your face out Toto his. And it's the kind of stuff that
- 54:57she would have said before, except now it's it's a gag.
- 55:01Now she's being sarcastic. Speaking of Avery, like, being
- 55:04into it after Kermit says that Piggy means his Avery's adorable
- 55:09face. Or, I mean Kermit says you.
- 55:11You mean my adorable face, right.
- 55:13That's what Kermit says. Avery does this, like, skeptical
- 55:16eyebrow, this, like just like, I, I, I, I don't think so.
- 55:20Frog, you know? And he's just like, he's so
- 55:25excited about playing along and like, I think is it Piggy and
- 55:29him both say, what's the matter in unison to Kermit?
- 55:32Yeah, that's great. It's so fun.
- 55:34Yeah, Avery says. He keeps kosher, so Bacon never
- 55:39touches these lips or whatever, and then she karate chops.
- 55:42Put your lips to this. That's so good.
- 55:45And there the truck driver lives.
- 55:47Fozzie Bear, stand by. You are jealous, aren't you?
- 55:51Fozzie stand by. No, I'm not Fozzie stand by.
- 55:57Well, Scooter told me it was all a trick.
- 56:00Scooter stand by. Nice punt.
- 56:07Who? Needs you?
- 56:11Flip her face. So this is now 3 karate chops in
- 56:18one episode. Yeah.
- 56:20Miss Pinky is now officially a terrifying force who is just
- 56:23occupying the Muppet Theatre. Yeah, that's true.
- 56:27She is now entirely in control of this place.
- 56:31So there's there's eight more episodes in the season after
- 56:34this, but this was the last clip you wanted me to watch.
- 56:37Yeah, I realized that actually. So there's I have something to
- 56:40say about the 124 as well. OK, which is Remind Me 120.
- 56:44Don't tell me, Don't tell me. All right, That's Mum and Shots,
- 56:48No? You are so right.
- 56:50Is it mum and shots? Yeah, stick to your guns.
- 56:53All right, cool. Yeah.
- 56:53Hey, that's Mum and shots I heard.
- 56:55You got it on the first one, yeah.
- 56:57This is the one where where Gonzo's in love with Piggy.
- 57:00Oh, sure, yeah. Yeah, and Piggy has nothing but
- 57:02withering scorn for him. And the thing that I think is
- 57:04amazing with this episode is Gonzo is doing exactly the same
- 57:08thing to Piggy that Piggy was doing to Kermit in the early
- 57:12episodes. Like he literally throws himself
- 57:15on top of her. Just like 3 she threw herself on
- 57:17Kermit. Hug me, Miss Piggy.
- 57:20Hold me. I will not hug you.
- 57:22You put Turkey. Hold my hand.
- 57:27Pick of my dreams. Will you be a twat?
- 57:32It is the exact same thing, and she despises it.
- 57:36Right, right. And she just cried chops.
- 57:38And this is exactly the opposite of what she was when she
- 57:42started. And that was only six months
- 57:45ago. This character has made it a
- 57:47complete 180° turn where now Gonzo is the effeminate lover.
- 57:52At one point he says kissy kissy to her and faced with her own
- 57:55behavior of just a few months ago, it turns Piggy into the
- 57:59truck driver and all she wants to do is yell and insult him and
- 58:03finally karate chop him. Yeah, also, though that weirdly,
- 58:07that is the basis for their entire relationship on Muppet
- 58:12Babies for some. Reason.
- 58:14That's right, the original Muppet Babies.
- 58:15Gonzo's always hitting on her. She's always like, get away from
- 58:18me, you weirdo, you creep. And it's like, why is this what
- 58:23the babies are doing on the baby show?
- 58:26I don't know. Why is there this weird,
- 58:28uncomfortable love triangle? Take it up with Scott Shaw, I
- 58:32guess. So if you think back to
- 58:36temptation, where all all she says is like he's cute and yes,
- 58:41my love and everything for her is so is is feminine and
- 58:45melodramatic. There is so much development in
- 58:48Miss Piggy's character from the first episode to the last of the
- 58:52season. Yeah.
- 58:54Where she still keeps that like over the top femininity that she
- 58:57had at the beginning of the season, but now it's a put on.
- 59:01You're right. Everything that she was in
- 59:04episode one O 1 is now sarcasm like she still loves Kermit.
- 59:08That's the thing that stays consistent is she still actually
- 59:11does want the same thing, but her approach is just completely
- 59:15different. And she's going to stay
- 59:17consistent from here on out and never change again.
- 59:19Yeah, her development is over. That's what I'm gathering from
- 59:22this. There's some more I.
- 59:24I'm kidding. I.
- 59:26Believe there's some more things that are going to come up in the
- 59:27future. I can't wait to hear what they
- 59:29are on your podcast because I've never seen The Muppets after
- 59:33after The Muppets episode for some reason.
- 59:36I'm just a die hard. There's more.
- 59:38Season one fan, yeah. There's got to be somebody who's
- 59:43like, they went downhill, they went completely downhill.
- 59:46You know, I bet there were people at the time.
- 59:47You know, when I, when it was the new show and this was like
- 59:51this like silly pun based at the dance show, you know was what I
- 59:55loved. I don't, you know?
- 59:56And then I don't care if they, if they develop and sing, if
- 1:00:00they want to sing Boy in the gallery, what do I care about
- 1:00:03that? You know, Are you going to do a
- 1:00:06whole episode about Piggy singing like boy in the gallery
- 1:00:11and all these like British Music Hall songs in season 2?
- 1:00:15Would you like to come back as a guest and we'll have an episode
- 1:00:18about that. Maybe you're right.
- 1:00:21You know who might is? Is Roz actually consider that
- 1:00:24stuff? Consider yourself booked.
- 1:00:27Well, Anthony, thank you. Thank you so much for joining me
- 1:00:30today. This has been really, really
- 1:00:31great. Thank you for having me, Danny.
- 1:00:34Where can people find you? They can find me.
- 1:00:37They can find my work at toughpigs.com, a website that
- 1:00:42you might have heard of before. And I don't write for the site
- 1:00:46as much as I used to. I don't write for the site
- 1:00:48hardly at all anymore, but. Now you're a podcaster.
- 1:00:51I'm a podcaster I Co host moving right along a Muppet Movie
- 1:00:54podcast practice by toughpigs.com which we discussed
- 1:00:57at the top of the show, but hopefully we'll have a new
- 1:00:59season out for Muppet Treasure Island sometime and you can
- 1:01:03listen to that. But in the meantime we have full
- 1:01:06seasons on The Muppet Movie, Great Muppet Keeper, Muppet
- 1:01:10State Manhattan, Muppet Christmas Carol, and special
- 1:01:13bonus season on Muppet Family Christmas.
- 1:01:16So. And you have to say, like your
- 1:01:18post, your post Christmas Carol season has been amazing.
- 1:01:23The specials we've done so far, I mean, yeah, like where where
- 1:01:26we had Robert Kraft on, I can't believe that.
- 1:01:28I know we're talking about like, Beach Party and talking about
- 1:01:30Kermit on Pig. They're some of my favorite
- 1:01:31episodes of the of the whole show.
- 1:01:33Thank you. So can I can I tell that story
- 1:01:36Is that is that OK to like plug here what that is do it.
- 1:01:39We we did an episode Ryan and I and our friend Becca who I
- 1:01:42future guest on this podcast. Be honest.
- 1:01:44But my my understanding we did an episode about Kermit Unpigged
- 1:01:50and the album from mid 90s And then the producer of that album,
- 1:01:55the head of Jim Henson records Robert Kraft found the podcast,
- 1:02:00listened to it and was so delighted that someone made a
- 1:02:05podcast about this. And it was actually a good
- 1:02:07conversation that he emailed us and said hey if you have
- 1:02:11questions I'd love to answer them.
- 1:02:13So he came on the show. Well, it turns out that after
- 1:02:15Jim Henson records, Robert Kraft was the head of music production
- 1:02:20for 20th Century Fox films for almost 20 years.
- 1:02:25So this is the guy who produced, like the Titanic soundtrack.
- 1:02:29Yeah, and and like once more with feeling from Buffy the
- 1:02:33Vampire Slayer, you know, and like all kinds of stuff.
- 1:02:37And he came on our show to talk about Muppet Beach Party.
- 1:02:42Like that's what a thrill. Like, genuinely, What an
- 1:02:44unexpected thrill it. Was so fantastic.
- 1:02:47And that is the kind of magic you get with moving right along.
- 1:02:50Well, thank you. I'm glad we've also had Danny
- 1:02:53on, boy. I don't.
- 1:02:56Know probably 15 times. I mean, you've been on every
- 1:02:58season at least a couple apps and you did 5 for for family
- 1:03:03Christmas, Christmas and you were in a few different bonus
- 1:03:06episodes. I mean, you've been on, you're
- 1:03:08one of our most frequent guests. I know I want to be in another
- 1:03:11bonus episode. I I get, it's I, you know, I get
- 1:03:14jealous every time you do a bonus episode.
- 1:03:15And I'm like, wait, I'm not on that one.
- 1:03:17What the hell is? That is that for real.
- 1:03:19No, I'm fine. All right, Well, next time
- 1:03:21coming up on this show got Jared Faircloth coming in.
- 1:03:24He's going to talk about Pigs in Space from Season 2, and that's
- 1:03:28going to be fantastic. So stay tuned for that kissy
- 1:03:31kissy. And thank you for listening to
