Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Will pill popping really help with our deeper issues?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: If you have a health problem, if you've got a
- 0:02Speaker 1: mental problem, if you can't sleep, if you're obese, don't worry,
- 0:07Speaker 1: settle down. Everything will be fine. All your problems can
- 0:10Speaker 1: be solved with a pill, with an injection, with a prescription,
- 0:13Speaker 1: or even no prescription. That's the clear message that we've
- 0:16Speaker 1: been getting this week from our regulators and from our government.
- 0:19Speaker 1: From Tuesday, the Hollywood Weight Loss Drug wag GOVI, like Ozmpic,
- 0:23Speaker 1: will be available here, not for diabetes, but to shift weight.
- 0:27Speaker 1: People aren't being told not to get obese, they're being
- 0:30Speaker 1: told that once they do get too big, a drug
- 0:33Speaker 1: will make them small again. Malatonin will now be available
- 0:36Speaker 1: over the counter for those who can't sleep. Forget counting
- 0:40Speaker 1: sheep or wearing yourself out with exercise, Pop a pill
- 0:44Speaker 1: and off you go. No nice. You can now get
- 0:47Speaker 1: an ADHD diagnosis from your GP or from a nurse practitioner.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Usually you need to see a psychiatrist for this. We're
- 0:55Speaker 1: prescribing ten times the amount of meds than we were
- 0:58Speaker 1: fifteen odd years ago for eighty eight in this country.
- 1:01Speaker 1: We spoke to a guy this week on the show
- 1:03Speaker 1: with ADHD who said the law change is actually a
- 1:05Speaker 1: good thing. But he also warned about TikTok because apparently
- 1:09Speaker 1: lots of young people are getting diagnosed by TikTok and
- 1:14Speaker 1: they're running around telling everyone they've got a neuro disorder,
- 1:16Speaker 1: when actually they're just spending too much time on their
- 1:18Speaker 1: phones and hunting for likes. The question is whether, as
- 1:22Speaker 1: a society, as a species, even all this pill popping,
- 1:27Speaker 1: all this medication is evolution or insanity. Just the fact
- 1:33Speaker 1: that we're wealthy enough to eat ourselves half to death
- 1:37Speaker 1: then fix it all with a simple twice weekly injection
- 1:40Speaker 1: a sign that we're incredibly smart or incredibly stupid. I
- 1:45Speaker 1: genuinely don't know the answer to that question at this point.
