Latest / Keeping It Relevant / Supplemental: Catching up with Cody - Godzilla Minus One
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_01: On today's episode, I watched uh I guess I don't know where John would put it in his franchise-wise, I know it's one of your favorites.
- 0:07SPEAKER_01: I don't know where the actual movie itself would rank.
- 0:10SPEAKER_01: Out of the thirty-six other movies?
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: Just in general for you.
- 0:14SPEAKER_01: Oh, just in general?
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: That's not my top twenty.
- 0:17SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: I watched Godzilla minus one, because John's a Godzilla guy, and I was like, I'll do one movie.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: I'm not watching all of them.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm saying.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: You don't want to watch all 30 or 38 now.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: 38 Godzilla movies?
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: Too many.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: One of them's in anime.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: That's three of them are anime.
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: Still too many Godzilla's.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: That's fair.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: Wait, before we go into the breakdown, should we explain the concept of this show at all?
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, go ahead.
- 0:43SPEAKER_02: To anyone that doesn't know this.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: Alright.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: Clearly, if you watch the main show, Cody hasn't seen a whole lot of movies.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: So me and John are gonna force him, after he watches, a specific movie on a list that we've compiled that you also can contribute to if you comment on it and tell him he needs to watch it.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: So take it away, Cody.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: I thought I started that already.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: Alright, we'll continue.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: Whatever.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: There's an awkward intro.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: My bad.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: Am I giving him just a full synopsis, or are we just talking about what I thought about of the movie?
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: Give us your opinion on the movie.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: Tell us about the movie, but through the eyes of Cody.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, what do you think the movie was?
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: With that being the plot involved.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, I guess if you've ever seen Godzilla, you kind of already know what the plot is.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's a Godzilla movie.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: I assume it's pretty close to what they've been before.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: I mean it's no, actually, no, it's not.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, very much middle of World War II where it starts.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: Dude's supposed to be a kamikaze pilot, kinda chickens out of that, because I mean I get that.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: Who would want to actually do that?
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: At the time, anybody with honor, but anyways, keep going.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, I didn't even say anything about honor.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: I just understand not wanting to do it.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: Anyway, he backs out, decide lands on some island, Godzilla shows up instead of shooting it with what they considered, I guess at the time, a really big gun.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: He doesn't do that.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: A bunch of people died, him, everybody except him, and I guess Captain, I don't know what his actual position was.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: I think he was the lead mechanic.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: Okay, lead mechanic.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: I know he works on the planes.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: Here's a charge.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: Those are the only two that like survive the attack.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: He gets back.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: I guess one of his neighbors or something is pissed that he's not dead because you know he was supposed to be a kamikaze, and that means you ain't coming back.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: He runs into some lady who's got a kid, learns that the kid's not her, she's just taking care of it.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: They eventually kind of just move in together, because he's just like, Well, I'm not gonna let you starve, but I don't really know who you are either, but sure, let's do it.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: Which is also really weird for Japan in that era.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: Like that concept.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, you have to understand that these Godzilla movies since uh 1957, or no, sorry, 1954, um they were all meant as allegories for not only the repercussions of war, specifically World War II, but also there were allegories on Japanese society.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but at that time, like they believe in that.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: So for them to add that in it was kind of them talking about like you know, this is probably what what we should have been.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: That's fair.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Versus like, yeah, so anyways.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: Sorry to interrupt.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: Good.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: Eventually he gets a job working for some guys on a boat that's there to rip up underwater mines, and then they shoot the mines to settle them off, so you know, submarines and stuff down the road don't run into them.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: Godzilla shows up, because of course he does.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: What a movie are we watching if he's not in it?
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: You know.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: I mean.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: Anyway, eventually they send the information off, somebody else gets a hold of the fact that it's going on.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: They send a bigger boat out, he absolutely destroys that boat.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: It shows up on land, of course, the main dude's there with the lady that he's living with.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: Godzilla attacks, she shoves him into some little alleyway, and she gets absolutely blasted.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: So that point, oh yeah, she's dead.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: But, you know, who knows what a movie's gonna do.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: Assume she's dead.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: They don't show anything.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: He gets pissed off, they eventually get some plan together to kill Godzilla, and he decides this is now when he's gonna do what he was supposed to do in World War II, I guess.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: I mean they fight Godzilla, he dives the plane into it, blow him up.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm trying not to give away too much of it.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: No, no, you're fine, you're fine.
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: It's uh people clicked on the video, they know what they're getting at.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Here's the thing, like, we'll we'll put a description, like, this is a spoiler thing.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Like, we want to hear what's going on with you and what you thought about this through the eyes of Cody.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: Also, to be fair, this is probably the earliest of movies we're going to be picking.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: I'm overall kind of boring, like there's not a lot going on.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: Not gonna lie.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: I know you love Godzilla's face.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: No, like that was like those, like, what about the part when, you know, he blows up Godzilla's face and I mean I was a And then he regenerates, like, what wasn't Crazy surprised that like he had the ejector seat.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: I thought he might actually go through with the whole kamikaze even after dude was like, hey, I put an ejector seat in.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: I thought maybe he would still do it, but at the same time, like I wasn't completely surprised it didn't happen that way.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: You don't mention an ejector seat if it's not gonna play a role.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: No, exactly, yeah.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: It could have been to be like, oh, he's gonna do it, and then he doesn't, and you go, Oh, he didn't do it.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: He uh Batman Dark Knighted it, man.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Um Okay, so but okay, so you said it was boring.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: I and I can understand that.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Um classic uh Japanese style like Godzilla movies to what Americans are used to when it comes to kaiju movies can be very boring.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: Uh kind of kind of why I don't really drive with Gomera, surprisingly enough, but uh I do understand the turtle, right?
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Yes, the turtle.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Um good movie, bad movie though, despite it being boring, like it's okay.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: It's okay.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Like scale from like it a thumbs up, thumbs down world.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: Oh no, we need to invent a Cody scale.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Oh, a Cody scale.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: I don't even know what to do for that.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: We'll do that next time.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: I with the otters, I do thumbs up, thumbs down.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'd give it a sideways thumb slightly leaning up.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: I I I take that.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: It could have definitely been worse.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: The d any live action dubbing's gonna look weird.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: Don't get me wrong, it's better than any clip I've seen of the old ones, because that one was just bad.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: But no matter what you do, a live action dub is gonna be weird.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Did did the live did the dubbing take it away from you?
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Because of the dubbing?
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: Like, did that play into effect of you being like, it's okay?
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: Slightly, but not a lot, because it was like, I understand what's happening, like it's either gonna be I find it with the subtitles and I have to read the whole time I'm trying to watch it, or I can just have a weird dubbing effect because it's not gonna quite line up.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: What did you think about the ending when the woman showed up?
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: That was my biggest surprise.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: I honestly thought she was dead.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: Like, there was zero indication she wasn't dead.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: And just kind of showed up, and I was like, where'd that come from?
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Well, did you see the thing on her neck?
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: No, I don't know.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: You missed that?
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: Ah, dude.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: If it was a little thing, yeah, I'm probably not gonna pick up on it.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: I'm bad at finding Easter eggs and things.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: So at the very the very last shot, it's like for a split second you see the black line on her neck, which is the same black line that you would see on Godzilla every time he regenerated.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: And if you remember one of the one of the subplots was them experimenting with like Godzilla's uh skin and DNA.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: And they found out so like what what we're guessing is that they found uh a way to take his regenerative power and to put it into humans.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: However, seeing the black lines on her neck clearly show that there was some reaction happening there.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: Now that could have just been kind of a callback to like Shin Godzilla in 2004 or 16, but that's a whole nother I'm not gonna go on a Godzilla uh rant.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: I mean was a little surprised.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: Actually, no, wasn't surprised.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: I was I don't know why I was about to say I was a little surprised.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: I wasn't even remotely surprised that Kid showed up.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: Of course he was gonna show up at the end.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: When they're like, no, you're staying behind, and then he shows up with a bunch of butts.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: I was like, well, yeah, we I knew this was coming.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: He wasn't sitting there.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: It won uh it won a uh Oscar for like CGI?
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for visuals.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I get that.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, for the most part, I thought Godzilla's visuals were great.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: I still think his face looks weird, and I think I'm just always gonna.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: I just think it's kind of a derpy looking face that they pick for it.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: Well, I think on this one, I didn't get lizard whenever I watched it at first.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: Because, you know, Godzilla's a mutated lizard, right?
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Well, in 1998, he's a mutated lizard.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: In 2016, he's a mutated fish, but originally he's just a natural kaiju.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: In this one, technically technically in this one, and in the Hizzy era, he is a dinosaur.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: Okay, that sort of tricks because I got crocodile out of it.
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: That's like sorry.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: No crocodile, because they have fringes.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: Because in the beginning you see on the island, like you mentioned, Godzilla shows up, but he looked smaller, younger, and more like a dinosaur type of thing.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: Not as big.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: His face is other than probably the one that was terrible, that's the only face I've thought didn't look kind of weird.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: I'll admit, I thought it was really round for Godzilla.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: For like as menacing as the rest of him is, you see the face, and I'm just like, kind of a derpy looking face.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: Not gonna lie.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: Like his face doesn't care.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: The rest of him, terrifying.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: What did you think of his atomic breath?
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: I thought the animation on it was great.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: Like it was sick watching it.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: Did you like how he with the spine?
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the spines like sticking out as they charged up.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the visuals on it were fantastic.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: Just the actual story, I was like, I feel like we're not really doing anything here.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: I gotcha.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: See, for the t I prefer the American version of the atomic breath in the new version.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: The legendary one?
- 11:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Those are well, I do like that a lot, the way it charges up, but you hear the humming.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I like that.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: I like that aspect of it.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: I do like this Godzilla minus one atomic breath where his spikes come up and then he when they push down.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: I also like his atomic breath because it's an atomic explosion and has the mushroom cloud, it has the uh shockwave of a like atomic bomb.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: And very s like they took it back to being an allegory of like World War II and everything.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: What the nuke was.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: Which that makes sense for like where they were going.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: I don't know if blue's the correct choice.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: I don't think it looks bad as being blue.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: I'm just like, I don't know if that's the right color.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: What would you think of green?
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: So this where I'm at, I'm like, this I don't think blue was a bad choice, but I don't know.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: So this Godzilla, minus one, the specific Godzilla, has a green atomic breath.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: There's an adaptation.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: Uh Toho released a short, short, short, short of this specific Godzilla, and it's like, hey, he's back, and his spikes and his atomic breath were green.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: And that's the second time we saw a green atomic breath.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: The first time we saw it was in the 1998 animated American Godzilla.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: We saw a green atomic breath.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: So what is green indicator is it just green?
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: Just green.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: Looks cool.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: Didn't know if it was supposed to be like, oh, it's stronger or it does this thing.
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: I always think technically blue is stronger.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: Like if you're going off of like the frequency of heat and water.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: Well, red, red actually.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: So, because you have burning Godzilla, which is when he's at basically strongest.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: He's also a meltdown.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: He shoots out the red.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: But in Godzilla 2004's Godzilla Final Wars, when he does the supercharge and he spins around, it shoots red.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but I was more thinking like real world science.
- 13:32SPEAKER_02: Blue's hotter than green, and then red's the weakest.
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: There is green flames.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: I thought you needed some sort of chemical to make it green.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: It yeah, that's what makes it stronger.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: Ah, well, I was just thinking like pure heat, like hey, you go from orange to blue, cause heat comes off of like burning.
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: So like it's gotta burn that material.
- 13:51SPEAKER_02: That's fair.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: But would you uh would you recommend this movie?
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, if someone's into just big like monster movies, yeah, it's not bad.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: If you're looking for I don't want to necessarily say a period piece, because like it's kind of period piece because it's obviously World War II and shortly after, it's not like it's twenty years later.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, the daughter that he found with the one lady is only what like maybe four at the end of it.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: Like she's not real old at all, so it's only a couple years since like the war had ended.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: But like, it also doesn't feel like a period piece because it's a monster movie.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: So I don't know, like, kind of if you like period stuff, because it does show like what would have been going on in Japan after the war, but also like you kind of have to also enjoy a monster movie because it's what it is.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: I I think that's why I enjoyed this one a lot, because it did because the first Godzilla, you didn't really get to see much of like Japan after the war just because of the time.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Where this one is like you did see them try to rebuild their communities, they had like mini markets, but it was basically what they could scrap.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: Everyone was like sharing, but at the same time, like he still had to get a job to provide.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: Um and I think the title, minus one, was very appropriate for them showing, hey, this was life for Japan after the war.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: And then, of course, the allegory of Godzilla being like, it's it's still ongoing.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: It's still it just because the war's done doesn't mean there still isn't conflict out there.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: So I mean the ending, like the very end, I wasn't surprised.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: I was like, well, yeah, I think everybody kind of knew that was coming.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: Would you uh so there's a sequel coming out?
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: It'll be out this year, actually, the day after Godzilla Day, so November 4th.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: Godzilla minus zero.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Would that be something you'd be interested in watching just to see where the story goes?
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: I mean, not super.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: I'm just wait, they're releasing Godzilla on Guy Fox Day.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: On what?
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: I don't know what Guy Fox Day is.
- 16:09SPEAKER_02: Remember, remember the 5th of November?
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: No, the 4th.
- 16:13SPEAKER_02: I thought it was the 5th.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: No, I'm saying it's coming out on the 4th of November.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: Oh, I thought you said the day after the 4th.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: No, the day after Godzilla Day.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: Which I guess is the November.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: Which is November 3rd.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, November 3rd's Godzilla Day.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: Gotcha.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: It's being released in Japan and around the world on God on November 3rd.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: November 4th is when the US is getting it.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: So anyway, so yeah, my question, would that be something you'd be interested in watching continuing the story?
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: Probably not.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: I'm just not that interested in the Godzilla story in general.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: Like it's not a bad movie.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: It takes something to be real bad for me not to recommend somebody at least give it a shot.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: But I'm not that.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: I'm just not interested enough.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'd love to see what they do special effects wise, but as far as like full movie, like I just am not that vested in it.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: So there's a rumor that there will be a second monster in this movie that Godzilla will actually have to fight.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: Some think it'll be the classic King Gidorah.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: I personally don't think so.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: But if if lo and behold there's a second monster in the movie, would you be more interested in watching that, knowing that you'll get to see a kaiju fight somewhere in the story?
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: Maybe a little bit, again, probably more for the effects, because I mean if it looks good, I can enjoy that part of it.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: Story-wise, still not really.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: Okay, cool.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: I don't have anything else for Cody.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: I don't either.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: Like, it was I know you watched it because you were like watched the wrong one.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: I did.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: I I totally thought we said Shin Godzilla.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: So I that's amazing.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: That's a really good one.
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, and I was like, yeah, I just watched Shin and I was talking to Cody, and he was like, I didn't think we were watching Shin.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: I thought we were doing minus one, and I was like, shit, I watched the wrong movie.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: I saw Shin Godzilla for the first time last year on Godzilla Day.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: I liked Shin God the first time in theaters.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: Well, I thought it was Japanese exclusive for years.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: Shin God to me, Shin Godzilla, the story was better, I think.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: Uh I would I would agree.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: If if you had to look at me and say, hey, between Shin Godzilla and Godzilla minus one, which story was better, I would say Shin Godzilla.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm kind of with Cody.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: This one, it almost felt like it was too people-centric.
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: I know that sounds weird.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: I I have something to say about that.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: That's fine.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: Let me get my thought out.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: Like, it just felt and I get, I understand why they did it that way.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: I understand it, but to me, uh like for a movie aspect, it's not what this is my second time watching it, and I feel more strongly about it now.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: It's not what I expect when you say Godzilla minus one.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: And I think that's the whole issue with my issue with it, is that like I feel like you bit too much people-centric.
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: You didn't get that mixture, like the new ones have.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the first what, like, three, I guess, really, the first two times he shows up are what, like, five minutes, maybe?
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: Maybe.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: Like that beach scene, there's no way it's longer than three.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the boat isn't very long.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: By the time he gets on land the first time, you're like, okay, this is at least a little longer scene, but even that's like maybe ten minutes or something.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: So it's like, he doesn't we don't see him that much until the very end, and it's just like, for a Godzilla movie, I expect to see Godzilla more.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: So this is this is the reason why in 2014 when Legendary was like, we're gonna make our own Godzilla movie, and I my first thing I said was America is not ready for a true Godzilla movie, which is what the 2014 Godzilla was.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: It was a pretty true to Godzilla, and I know everyone's issue with that one was Godzilla wasn't in it enough, especially for a movie called Godzilla.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna tell you now, right now, if you are looking at Toho specific, which is 99% of the Godzilla movies, if you are watching a Toho Godzilla movie, you will barely see Godzilla.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: It's either it's either about the people or it's about the monster that Godzilla's fighting.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: A really good example is Godzilla versus Megalon.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: Godzilla's in the last maybe 15-20 minutes of the movie.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: The rest of the time, it's more about Megalon, it's more about the people, it's more about Jet Jaguar, it's more about a kid, and it's more about this like underground cult society that's like like basically the Japanese version of like the Illuminati.
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: Godzilla is in it for like 15 minutes.
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: I assume that's because they're more like they're trying to throw in more metaphors and stuff than like well, yeah, and they're also trying to make it like a story.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, but my issue.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: Not just my issue.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: So I I I always thought it was interesting how like whenever you would see, and that was everyone's issue with 2014 Godzilla, because it was more about the people, it was more about the monster, and Godzilla was probably in that movie for like 30 minutes.
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: He does have the best scene.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: He got the coolest scenes.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: But uh, but yeah, and then people were like, oh, Godzilla wasn't in this movie.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: I was like, yeah, that I was I was expecting that, and people like me were expecting that, but I don't think America the average fan.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: The average the average movie goer, at least the average American, I don't think 'cause we 'cause I've found that Americans like Kong a lot because Kong is about Kong and that's more action packed and more about the monkey than it is about other stuff.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: So I I'm not saying I'm not saying I I am against anything you guys say about that.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: I get it.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: But it really is.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: I've found that like and that's probably fair.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's just how movies are here.
- 22:14SPEAKER_02: I don't disagree with that.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: I just think that the people-driven story in this Godzilla minus one, and I believe Cody feels this way, was very boring's not the right word.
- 22:29SPEAKER_02: They just don't do anything.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: It was like a drama.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: Instead of being like a kaiju movie, it was more like a drama.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: Even if it wasn't like super kaiju, like, even when we're focused on people, they're just like, other than him doing his job, like, they're not doing anything.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: I want you to know here's the thing.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: Now I want him to watch Shin Godzilla.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: But they're doing things in that story.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: But but they're not, though, because they're going from room to room to room to room to show the bureaucracy of Japan and how that all works.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: But see, that took more of a story than this one guy.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: But even in Shin Godzilla, Shin Godzilla's only Godzilla's only in it for a little bit.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: Like he shows up for like 10 seconds and then goes away.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: But the people story in Shin Godzilla, it tells a story.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: We're just watching a guy.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: Let's see.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: I think with Shin Godzilla, it was the people where Godzilla Minus 1 was like a person.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: That's that's the thing.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: I think if they focusing on the one guy, if they really had done more with like focusing on his struggle of not doing his job in World War II, because obviously they show some points where like it's kind of eaten at him that he didn't do what he was supposed to, if they had focused more on that, I think it would have been a little more compelling.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I I I got that I agree with that, but I at the same time, unfortunately, and this is like something I didn't like about the movie, I got all that in the beginning when he was on the island.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: Oh, see, I don't and then it was like, okay, where else do I where else do I go with this person?
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: It's just gonna be him being mopey the whole movie.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: See, I think it would have worked.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: Some like something where there's like a scene with him and the girl he took in where like he wakes up in like a cold sweat because of some nightmare and she's trying to help.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: It's like that's at least diving a little deeper into what his psyche is doing to him for not doing his job with this whole thing.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: See, I think my I don't think they leaned into leaned into his struggles enough.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: Like you get the aspect of the head mechanic handing him like all those letters on that boat back to the mainland.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: And like you don't and the lady getting onto him, but like there should be more people antagonizing that PTSD to where he almost feels like he has to do Seppuku.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: And then, like, say he gets to the point where he's about to do Seppuku, and then Godzilla shows up and he like sees he has a redeeming feature that he needs to take this out.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: Then that's a whole different whole different ballgame.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: And I think that's what they were going for.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: I I because when it first released, so you need to understand, Cody, this didn't release in America right away.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, fake it.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: It was it was only in Japan, and and when it got the hype in Japan, they were like, okay, we're gonna have it worldwide.
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: Well, then you also have to have time for dubbing and stuff too.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: So unless they planned that for original release, then yeah, it wouldn't come out at the same time.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they didn't they did not plan to release it in America at all until like the hype and the want for it.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: Because it only it only made like 50 million in America.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: That was not bad.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: It's not bad, but like for its entirety that it was showing.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: It wasn't that crazy, was it?
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: No, it wasn't.
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I mean the effects of it, and then now we're looking at like Marvel spins this much, and you're like, this looks so much better.
- 25:51SPEAKER_02: The Marvel CGI lately's been bad, but that's a different thing.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: The thing is though, like when I when I heard about it and people saw it, they were like, hey, Johnny, you need to see this, and I was like, well, duh.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: They're like, no, it does really good at showing PTSD.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: And I feel like that was one of the underlying allegories that they had.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: But again, I like I agree with you.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: I don't really think they showed it.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: Hit the nail.
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: I that's why I like when he was on the boat with the crew, because then you had you saw more stuff with that.
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think the issue is they wanted to lean into it, but they didn't know where that line was where we lean too hard.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: And like I kind of get that if a director doesn't know how to lean into that and then like pull back a little bit.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: It's a hard line toe when you're talking about mental health.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: But and then but like you understand, like the way Japan deals with mental health and the way America does, that's also fair too.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: It's completely different.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: So like I understand we're like over in Japan, they were like, wow, this was done perfectly.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: But here in America, we're like, you probably could have done more.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: But and it's yeah, I mean, that's something that I don't know that.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: That's cultural differences.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: That's not something you can super fix unless they go, Well, we're gonna try and make it in the American way, and it's like then it probably would have just been bad.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: Well, and that's where we have like 1998 and like the modern Godzilla.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: Like there's their own little allegories in there too.
- 27:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and like it's hard it's hard to do PTSD in shows or movies.
- 27:21SPEAKER_02: Like the best.
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: Especially when Godzilla's around.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: Like the best the best form I've seen of it was actually during the Punisher season two on Netflix, how they represented like actual veterans at PTSD.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: I thought they did that really well.
- 27:37SPEAKER_02: But different culture.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: Well, I give this movie a two thumbs up.
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: I give it a sideways leaning up thumb.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: I'll give it not bad.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: I am biased though.
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: I'll admit that.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: I'll give it a thumb up.
- 27:51SPEAKER_02: Uh gotta watch it at least once, even though we kind of dogged on the people storyline of it.
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: It's still a good story.
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: It's just we're making critiques on it.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I really think a lot for me to say don't watch something.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: It I mean, it's gotta be like rubber level bad for me to say don't watch it.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: That's fair.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I I think um And if you have any questions about that, watch our episode on our list of terrible movies.
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: Yes, watch that.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: Um no, I I personally from like a major Godzilla fan, I think you watched the right one.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: So, and I think your synopsis on it was you left out a lot of major I've never heard anyone make Godzilla sound so lame, but I I do think your synopsis on it was very was very on point.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: So awesome.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: Alright, see you guys.
