- 0:00Our number 2, Miller and Condon welcome back.
- 0:02Iowa Sports Radio Network with you until 2.
- 0:04Shawna Lucas coming up two until 5:00.
- 0:07Back to Westwood ones coverage tonight, the first four and then
- 0:10all day tomorrow, most of the day on Friday.
- 0:13If you can't be in front of your TV watching the tournament, you
- 0:16can. TuneIn to Des Moines sports
- 0:18station 106.3 KXNO. Let's head to Chicago each and
- 0:22every Wednesday at this time, Cap Man joins us, a centurion of
- 0:25Iowa sponsors Kathy, and he's with us, Kathryn Kent, thanks as
- 0:29always. How are you?
- 0:31I'm doing great. How are you 2 doing?
- 0:33Doing OK. I look forward to picking your
- 0:35basketball brain, college basketball brain coming up
- 0:37regarding your bracket or you think it's going to win it all
- 0:40about 1. On my bracket yet, but I do have
- 0:42thoughts. Well, I know you've got an
- 0:44opinion. I mean, that's one of the things
- 0:45we love about you. Right or wrong, you've got an
- 0:47opinion. Yeah, I always.
- 0:49Do yes, you do, and you're not shy about it.
- 0:51So let's get into the world baseball classic and in
- 0:53particular, I want to start with Palencia, who I thought this was
- 0:56a big moment for him not only last night, but the semi final
- 0:59as well. And yes, he certainly got his
- 1:01critics, his doubters. Is this guy ready for a big spot
- 1:05cap bod? What did the last two nights, if
- 1:07anything, show you when it comes to the Cubs closer?
- 1:13That we've got a guy who we can absolutely trust at the back end
- 1:16of the pen Yep. He was tremendous man.
- 1:19I mean go look at his numbers. It'll be in my recap rush hour
- 1:23this afternoon. The pride probably be one of my
- 1:26stats of the day. Only smokes was he locked in and
- 1:30he was emotional before he got the last out.
- 1:35He got the last strike and he some people think he had tears
- 1:39in his eyes because of what it meant to people from Venezuela.
- 1:43And I thought it was just super freaking cool, Super cool.
- 1:47And I love that he's my closer. The other big story that comes
- 1:50from the Cubs perspective is obviously what happened with
- 1:54Shohei, not Shohei Suzuki. With Suzuki and the knee injury.
- 1:58Boy, just watching that play, it looks so innocuous.
- 2:01Sorry, it kind of comes up slow. How concerned are we about that
- 2:05knee? It does not sound from what I'm
- 2:09being told that it's anything to be super concerned about that
- 2:13good. Not going to slow him from
- 2:15baseball activities. It's a pain management thing.
- 2:18Do I think he plays opening day? I think that's probably in
- 2:21doubt. Going to be cold and nasty.
- 2:24They're going to do all they can to protect their key guys.
- 2:27So if I was a betting man, he doesn't play opening day.
- 2:31But maybe I'll be wrong, yeah. Could he DH cap?
- 2:36That's what he's probably going to do most of it anyway.
- 2:38Oh, is he OK? Yeah, I just think they're going
- 2:42to be careful. If he has any discomfort, I
- 2:45think they're going to be very careful.
- 2:47So who wins the right field spot?
- 2:49Who's your? Who's your open?
- 2:50He does get it, huh? Or could be Michael Brantley.
- 2:56Conforto. Michael Brant.
- 2:59I'm not Brantley. Conforto Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:02I confuse those two guys all the time.
- 3:04Yeah, Michael Conforto could be him.
- 3:06So they like what Shaw's doing defensively out there.
- 3:09What have you seen? Oh yeah, he's a stud and he's
- 3:12hit the ball well. So yeah, I would be surprised if
- 3:16you don't see maybe not Opening Day, but a significant number of
- 3:20times that Matt Shaw is your right fielder.
- 3:24Anything else? Cubs camp?
- 3:26Why? I'll be honest, spring training
- 3:27because of the WBC. It's also definitely moved to
- 3:31the Backpage college basketball. You know the importance here in
- 3:34our state of that cappy. So, anything else that we should
- 3:37know as we get ready for the start of the Cubs season?
- 3:40Yeah, that they've got two guys that you should buy tickets on
- 3:43because I've already done it, OK, for Thai Young.
- 3:47Really. Horton and Cabrera.
- 3:51Yep. What kind of price on both of
- 3:53those dudes? So I'm, I'm on Fanatics, yeah.
- 3:57And on Hard Rock, those are my 2 spots and I use the boost.
- 4:03I got Cade Horton at 75 to 1. Jesus.
- 4:07He's 60 to 1 and the boost got it to 75 and Edward Cabrera I
- 4:12think is 40 to 1 and I got him with a boost at 60.
- 4:17So I bet both guys and then I'm I'm going to today when I get to
- 4:21my studio, I'm betting Daniel Palencia to lead the National
- 4:25League in state. Why not?
- 4:29Absolutely. You're telling me on a team that
- 4:31I'm predicting A-Team that's going to win 94 games is my
- 4:36prediction. You're telling me that they win
- 4:39that number of games that dude's not going to have if he stays
- 4:43healthy? A bunch of save opportunity?
- 4:45You're wrong. Hey, what about PCA not getting
- 4:48the start? I mean, Bucks is a phenomenal
- 4:50defensive player. He really is.
- 4:52I didn't have didn't have the best tournament with the bat in
- 4:54his hand. PCA did.
- 4:56Should he should? Did Derosa mess up their by not
- 4:59going PCA and centre last? Would it have made a difference?
- 5:02Cap. I don't think it would have, but
- 5:05maybe you never know. But you had, you know, he pulled
- 5:09the typical what managers do. I don't like it, but typical
- 5:13what baseball guys do. Who was on the mound?
- 5:16A lefty? Lefty.
- 5:18They went with the right. Yep, Yep.
- 5:20White Sox wise boy, there's a lot of buzz about the Whites.
- 5:24Not that they're going to be a playoff game, but.
- 5:25They're going to go over the total.
- 5:26They are trending in a positive direction.
- 5:29And I'm hearing this from all kinds of different corners, from
- 5:32the analytical side to just the pure baseball side that this
- 5:36rebuild is going well, that they've potentially laid the
- 5:39groundwork, that we're going to see some fruits of this labor
- 5:42and and the the base feels very solid going forward here the
- 5:45next 3-4 years. OK, and I'm glad because I mean,
- 5:50I I cover them and you know, my business partner and my brother,
- 5:55two people super close in my life, they both are huge White
- 6:00Sox fans. OK, so I'll give you that that
- 6:03maybe just maybe things will be better.
- 6:07I question they're starting pitching.
- 6:10I just don't know if they have enough starting pitching.
- 6:13I don't the bullpen bullpen looks OK.
- 6:17You know, losing Mike Vassal for the year to a Tommy John
- 6:21surgery, that's not great. But I do think they're
- 6:25absolutely headed in the right direction.
- 6:28You know, are they going to win 85 games?
- 6:31That would be stunning to me. Stunning.
- 6:34Can they win 67? Yeah, I actually if, if their
- 6:41starting pitching stays healthy, they can they can absolutely win
- 6:4567, but they don't have a lot of depth in that starting pitching
- 6:50either. So that is a question mark for
- 6:54sure. Do you like?
- 6:55Murakami, they look, they just lost Vasil to Tommy John.
- 7:00They've got Kyle Teal gone for probably another month.
- 7:04So they've got, you know, a couple injuries they've got to
- 7:06deal with do. You like Murakami?
- 7:10Yeah, I think he's a real solid player.
- 7:12I think he's going to strike out a lot more than people realize,
- 7:15but I think it's a good addition for them.
- 7:17I don't think he's coming in to be, you know, an All Star, but
- 7:21maybe I'll be proven wrong. Kathy, every single time I bring
- 7:26up that used to be a college basketball coach, I I talk to
- 7:29people and they're bewildered because they just know you for
- 7:31so long now with the media guy. But this the NCAA tournament,
- 7:36it's my favorite two days on the calendar.
- 7:38I know I'm certainly not alone. It's just incredible, the wall
- 7:41to wall basketball storylines. It is absolutely perfect.
- 7:45Are are there moments that you miss?
- 7:46Man, I wish I was a part of this.
- 7:49I wish I was still on the sidelines for this tournament
- 7:52and and just the importance and how cool these two days are.
- 7:56There are moments. I mean, I had a particular
- 7:59school reach out this year. Would you get back in it if our
- 8:04job opened and I said, are you crazy?
- 8:08No, I would not. I appreciate you asking, but I
- 8:12know the AD at the school and he said, yeah, we need a lot of
- 8:16work and you're connected in the business community.
- 8:19Would you, would you be interested in doing this with,
- 8:22you know, with the nil and all that?
- 8:23I just laughed. No thank.
- 8:25You, yeah, that'd be a big ASCAP and you've got a heck of a life.
- 8:29Let's let's be honest with. What you.
- 8:31Oh yeah, My wife went Yeah, no. You're not doing that.
- 8:34Yeah, no. Let's talk about the tournament
- 8:36itself. You haven't filled out a
- 8:38bracket, but you've got some opinions.
- 8:40In your opinion, who's the team to beat?
- 8:44You know, I would have told you Duke and I've been on saying
- 8:47that, you know, that's not I'm not breaking any news there.
- 8:51I understand that. But when they lost their point
- 8:54guard and he had foot surgery and it looks like he's not going
- 8:58to be able to make it back, That's a big ask against some of
- 9:02the teams when you get a couple rounds in.
- 9:04So right now I probably lean Iowa State.
- 9:09That's probably all. Right.
- 9:13I like Iowa State's Team A. Lot.
- 9:15Now, it doesn't mean that they're going to get it done,
- 9:19but I think they have a chance and I think that guy can flat
- 9:22out coach basketball. TJ absolutely.
- 9:25He's he gets guys to believe, there's no doubt.
- 9:28And you know they're going to defend you up and down the
- 9:30floor. I always find it interesting
- 9:32too. Kathy, It just in the Chicago
- 9:35market how little college sports matter.
- 9:38Did you tell us the Illinois, the long undefeated run that
- 9:41they had that season back what, 20 some years ago?
- 9:44That's the only time that it really penetrated throughout the
- 9:46course of the season, even at this point on the precipice with
- 9:49a very fun to watch Illinois team.
- 9:52Does it even matter really in the city of Chicago as it
- 9:55pertains to sports talk radio? No, absolutely not.
- 10:01Now, if you told me Illinois gets to the Final Four, yeah.
- 10:05But even when Loyola went a few years ago, yeah, it had the
- 10:10obligatory couple days that we talked about it and then it was
- 10:14a dead topic. It's not like it's going to
- 10:18change what we do because I can tell you, if Illinois was to be
- 10:23playing in the Elite 8 on a Thursday night and the Bears
- 10:29decided to make a trade for, I'm not talking Max Crosby, a nice
- 10:34player, a good player, not just some, you know, middling
- 10:39undrafted guy. Oh, Bears made a nice move.
- 10:43That would absolutely be the lead of our show.
- 10:45Yeah. Although next Thursday, Friday,
- 10:47it's opening weekend in baseball, so it might get pushed
- 10:49down a little bit because the Cubs are back.
- 10:52I do want to ask you this cap, I know that you had a poll
- 10:55yesterday and I'm anxious to see the results of it.
- 10:58When it had to do with the Chicago Bulls.
- 11:00And I'm paraphrasing something about do you still, have you
- 11:04paid attention to the Bulls or do you still, do you realize
- 11:07that the Bulls are even playing this year, something along those
- 11:10lines. What was the question?
- 11:12And then what were the results about this once storied
- 11:16franchise in the city of Chicago when it comes to the Chicago
- 11:20Bulls and their place in the sports genre in the winter
- 11:23sports in Chicago? Yeah, so the poll question was,
- 11:27I'm paraphrasing, it's not in front of me, but it was.
- 11:30Are you even paying attention to the Bulls?
- 11:32Yes, occasionally they're an embarrassment or no shock.
- 11:39And if you add no shot and they're embarrassing. 83% of
- 11:44those two, yeah. Yep.
- 11:48And the sad thing is, management doesn't care.
- 11:50Isn't that something it really is?
- 11:54And if they? Bring these two dudes in our
- 11:56front office back then they are absolutely telling you
- 12:00everything you need to know because they are.
- 12:03And we've had some bad teams. Lord knows they bring these two
- 12:08guys back, our tourists and Eversley, They are simply
- 12:11telling you we don't care how many those guys are incompetent,
- 12:15how many the worst executives I've ever watched.
- 12:18How many cold winter nights did you get in your car and drive to
- 12:20the United Center to watch a Bulls game this year?
- 12:24Zippo didn't go to one. I've watched, I've watched
- 12:30everyone because I have to do the.
- 12:34Of your job, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:36So I got the CHSN feed and all that, and I watch every game and
- 12:42it's my job. I got to talk about it the next
- 12:44day if somebody called in. But in the end, how many times I
- 12:48went there, I turned down tickets on the floor to go to a
- 12:51game. How the mighty have fallen, No
- 12:55doubt about it. Hey Cap, I had another college
- 12:58basketball question. We saw you and I beat UIC in the
- 13:02Missouri Valley Conference championship game.
- 13:04Now, when Loyal was at it, I laughed at that.
- 13:07Oh, Loyal is terrible. What it?
- 13:08What is the Missouri Valley doing?
- 13:09It worked out well. UIC may be trending in the right
- 13:12path. What is that fan base though,
- 13:14'cause there were not many Flame fans down in Saint Louis for
- 13:17that one is not even maybe at the level of Loyal and Final
- 13:21Fours. That's ridiculous to think
- 13:22about. But what can they be now?
- 13:24Up a level going from the Horizon League up to the
- 13:27Missouri Valley? Can that be a sustainable
- 13:29program? That year in the year out is
- 13:30solid and on top of it, maybe actually bring some fans down to
- 13:33Saint Louis for Arch Madness. You talk about Illinois,
- 13:37Chicago, Yes, Yeah, no. Commuter School.
- 13:41They they were, they were better this year.
- 13:44My partner's the voice of UIC and has been for 20 years and
- 13:49they had a nice run. They did, they played well, they
- 13:53got to the championship game. But in terms of being a
- 13:56sustainable thing, no, because they have no nil money.
- 14:00You got to have nil money and if you don't, you've got zero
- 14:05chance. That's just a fact.
- 14:08Sad, but it's true. Any Bears news since we last
- 14:12spoke? No, I mean, there was all that
- 14:16nonsense last week when Adam Schefter was asked by Ryan
- 14:20Clark, hey, what about the Bears re engaging on Max Crosby and he
- 14:24said the Bears are broke. And when he said that, he meant
- 14:29out of cap space. But he said that his source had
- 14:33said to him, we're broke. And so everyone went then sell
- 14:37the team. George, if you don't have any
- 14:39cash, they're out of cap space and they create, they're trying
- 14:45to save those when they have to sign Caleb and Rome and Burden
- 14:51and Loveland and Darnell Wright going to get 100 million next
- 14:55offseason. So there's a lot to do.
- 14:56You know, one thing, reading a little bit deeper and watching
- 15:00the signing as they went out there and they brought in Devin
- 15:03Bush, it's like, OK, nice player, but kind of the fit in
- 15:06the scheme. And reading a little bit deeper
- 15:08with the athleticism that he has, the speed that he plays
- 15:11that. And that certainly at times was
- 15:13not a strength for the linebacker Group A year ago out
- 15:16of the Bears. This one though, very under the
- 15:18radar, feels like Bush. That's kind of exactly what
- 15:21Dennis Allen was looking for there and a pretty good signing
- 15:24that fell under the radar. Yeah, that's why not only Devin
- 15:28Bush, they signed him, they also ended up signing more speed in
- 15:34their secondary, whether that was Kobe Bryant, who the and
- 15:38then letting Kevin Byard go, which, you know, Kevin worked on
- 15:42my channel. I love Kevin Byard.
- 15:44I wish he was still with us. But the Bears want speed.
- 15:47They made that clear. They want more speed and they
- 15:51didn't have it. And so if that's the case, if
- 15:54that's the way they want to do it and they're married to what
- 15:58Dennis Allen wants and Ben Johnson wants, then who am I to
- 16:02say they shouldn't do that? Yeah, Kobe Bryant from the world
- 16:05champion Seattle Seahawks can't hurt in a.
- 16:08Locker room, they lost a ton. Yeah, they did.
- 16:12Yep, they. Absolutely no Kenneth Walker, no
- 16:15Kobe Bryant and a bunch of guys leave.
- 16:18It is what it is. Yep, indeed, Cap.
- 16:20Thank you, pal. Appreciate you coming on as
- 16:22always. We'll talk to you in seven days.
- 16:24Thank you, David Kaplan. I look forward to it.
- 16:26You have a great day. See buddy, good to talk to you
- 16:28David Kaplan as we check in on Chicago sports.
- 16:31We do it each and every week and it's sponsored by a friends at

- 17:09David Kaplan. Speaking of sponsors, Circa
- 17:12Sports our sponsor of our program every single day.
- 17:16So I opened up the app when Kathy was talking there.
- 17:18And what did you find? Edward Cabrera 60 to 1.
- 17:23Kate Horton. Is what?
- 17:2590. To 1 so he didn't even need a
- 17:27boost. Not at circa.
- 17:29With Kathy? Got it.
- 17:30Where did he get Fanatics or Hard Rock?
- 17:32Yep. And as I, you know, trying to
- 17:36interject there, I'm not sure they'll be open with the end of
- 17:38the season. They'll still get paid.
- 17:39Yes, they will. The money's in the but he got a
- 17:42boost with them. Could open circa Illinois up and
- 17:45got a better price. Kate Horton, what are we doing?
- 17:47Yes, 5 bucks returns 455. So you bet.
- 17:51Kate Horton. Yep.
- 17:53Marquee Sports Network now available on Hulu.
- 17:55That's a big deal, is it? Yes, yeah, I I know that is one
- 17:59of the streamers that gets a a big one and that's been kind of
- 18:02the knock for. Does it up your feet for Hulu?
- 18:05Do you know? No clue.
- 18:06Do you have Hulu? No.
- 18:07I have DIRECTV, yeah. Me too, I think I have Hulu too,
- 18:11I don't know. Well, we have Hulu, but we don't
- 18:13have Hulu with live TV. I'm gonna guess that's what.
- 18:16You Oh, so that's what it is. OK, so you have to have the live
- 18:20TV component. Well, it makes makes sense.
- 18:22Makes sense. Have you done any baseball
- 18:23betting other than what, Kate Horton?
- 18:26Kate Horton. Let's see, what else do we have
- 18:29in there? College basketball?
- 18:30College basketball. These are not for your picks.
- 18:32No. No pending wagers.
- 18:34Pending wagers, nothing. No futures, no nothing.
- 18:37At this point, I haven't. Really dabbled either.
- 18:39I got a fantasy baseball draft on Sunday.
- 18:42I've done nothing. On Sunday.
- 18:45Nothing. I will, you and I and I with
- 18:47state are all going to be playing on Sunday.
- 18:49I know this right? Yes, might just have the
- 18:52computer drafted for me. How many are playing on Sunday?
- 18:592 Iowa beats Clemson Yep, Iowa State, of course will win, but
- 19:06the. Panthers are going to give them.
- 19:07So you like the points in that game, don't you?
- 19:09I really do. 10 1/2 or did you say came down?
- 19:129 1/2. And it was 11 1/2 when?
- 19:14We started the week there were a couple of places that had some
- 19:1611 and a halfs. I know our buddy Chris Andrews
- 19:19out at the South Point, he still has an 11 hanging there.
- 19:21But yeah, for the most part, all the 10 and a halfs have been
- 19:24gobbled up, down and 9 1/2. I'm just not a believer in the
- 19:28Big East. Yeah, you've been saying it's
- 19:30not like you're new to that take.
- 19:31Villanova, Utah State, Mountain West, year after year after year
- 19:35is disappointing in the NCAA, terrible against the Big East.
- 19:39I don't believe it. That's a tough one.
- 19:41You talk about coin flips, that definitely there.
- 19:44What Pump said earlier about Iowa's defense, too.
- 19:48I knew it was bad. Yeah, that was alarming.
- 19:50What was the last, what did you say?
- 19:52The last 10 games? That was the sample size.
- 19:55Their effective field goal percentage Teams are shooting
- 19:5758% from twos and 41. So why?
- 19:59Is that do you think? Are they worn down?
- 20:02That's. What I was going to say is it
- 20:03fatigue? I don't know nothing.
- 20:05Is I love the fact they've had a week off trend.
- 20:07Yes, they. Need.
- 20:08I love the fact they've had a week off.
- 20:11And with no welling, I mentioned the Ohio State game.
- 20:14I think that good comp is a very good comp for.
- 20:17The way now, don't start the way he did against the Buckeyes.
- 20:20Yeah, let's not get down 14 two, right?
- 20:22Can we at least get? Although Twitter was fun.
- 20:25Oh, man. Especially as they, as you go
- 20:27back, you have the freezing gold takes.
- 20:29Oh, my God. All right, let's, since we're
- 20:32jaunting all over the country today, where have we been?
- 20:34We've been to Tampa, then we went to Vegas, then we're in
- 20:37Chicago. Let's head down I-55 to Saint
- 20:42Louis. There's no I.
- 20:44It's not an Interstate, it's an Ave.
- 20:47Is that how you get there? The I was in the Saints, no.
- 20:50No, no. From Chicago.
- 20:52Oh, from Oh, I get where you're going.
- 20:54All over the country, I thought. You bet.
- 20:56From No. No, no, no, no.
- 20:57Like you just took this drive. What's going on?
- 21:00No, I'm in Chicago. OK, Now I'm going to Saint Louis
- 21:04and it's I-55. I've never taken that.
- 21:06I have once. Sounds awful.
- 21:08I went from a game at Wrigley, I was against the White Sox to
- 21:12game of Bush, the original Bush, and it was that an I-55, I want
- 21:17to say. The cookie cutter.
- 21:18Is that what it is? Well, many of the cookie cutter
- 21:2070 stadiums. The old.
- 21:22Yeah, the same. You've been in one, You've been
- 21:23in them all. Yep, that's a great .125 to
- 21:26Saint Louis. Regardless of how we'll get
- 21:28there, we'll be there next on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 21:32All right, Miller Kong and welcome back Iowa Sports Radio
- 21:35Network. Off to Saint Louis we go.
- 21:38That's where Eugene Repay Travis Hines are covering the Cyclones
- 21:42as they had get things underway on Friday.
- 21:46Eugene Repay joins the program Des Moines Register,
- 21:49desmoinesregister.com, Iowa State, Tennessee State.
- 21:52They will collide on Friday. Eugene Trenton, Ken, thanks for
- 21:55giving us a few minutes. I guess let's kind of start with
- 21:58your itinerary. What have you got today?
- 22:00Will there be an availability for the media that's made its
- 22:03way to Saint Louis to meet with TJ or the players in advance of,
- 22:07you know, tomorrow's media, media availability and open
- 22:11practice? Will you get a chance today,
- 22:13Eugene? Yes, yeah, Travis Hinds and I
- 22:16actually just got to Saint Louis a few minutes ago.
- 22:18We're now at the team hotel waiting for the team to make
- 22:21their arrival. I've been told that they
- 22:23successfully took off and they're on their way.
- 22:25They should be landing anytime soon.
- 22:27They should probably be here within the next half hour to an
- 22:30hour. And we'll get to talk with Coach
- 22:31TJ, also Burger and a couple of players.
- 22:34And then like you mentioned, tomorrow, that's when we'll have
- 22:36the bar formal open practices, the podium time and the locker
- 22:39room time. But we'll get a little glimpse
- 22:42with the team, a little opportunity to catch up them as
- 22:45they land and arrive here in Saint Louis.
- 22:47Ton of take away is from Kansas City and I think maybe the top
- 22:50of the fold has to be what we saw in that final game against
- 22:53Arizona and Killian Torre. He has been at times incredibly
- 22:58just offensively inept and suddenly we see him not just
- 23:02making a couple of shots but being aggressive with his shot.
- 23:05Was it a boost to confidence? It was just seeing one fall
- 23:08down. Not sure what it was.
- 23:09But that guy, that guy that we saw against Arizona offensively,
- 23:13I think changes the equation for Iowa State.
- 23:15Your thoughts on him? Yeah, I think if you you have
- 23:18Taray producing on the offensive side in addition to his
- 23:21defensive attitude and and effort there and it can only
- 23:25help the cyclone so much. It felt like for the last couple
- 23:28of months it had really been up and down or really since Big 12
- 23:31play started how Turay was doing offensively.
- 23:34His defense was usually there and he was a remained a starter
- 23:37because of his contributions on that part.
- 23:39But his offense was not what we saw in non cons non conference
- 23:42play when he was really just catching on fire and really
- 23:45having a hot start to his freshman year, his collegiate
- 23:48career. But now for him to start to turn
- 23:51the corner a little bit, especially if the Arizona game
- 23:54was not just a one time blip or just a temporary flash in the
- 23:58pan, like if he's able to get going or have some confidence
- 24:01growing because he saw the ball go through the hoop a couple of
- 24:04times on the offensive end, they can only help the cycles moving
- 24:07forward, especially this time of year.
- 24:09Eugene, you covered a lot of basketball prior to getting to
- 24:12the Des Moines Registry, covering the Big East, etcetera.
- 24:15I got to believe that that was as good a game that you saw
- 24:19witnessed on Friday, like most of us, right?
- 24:21Well, that'll be one we remember for a long time.
- 24:24Is that the best game you've seen in person?
- 24:26The, the, so I've, I've actually covered Final Four to just for
- 24:30Villanova, but I would say that that's probably #2 all time that
- 24:34I've ever witnessed. It's only the best over the last
- 24:3810 years that I've ever witnessed.
- 24:40It was outstanding, the shot making down the stretch that we
- 24:43saw your take away the rest of the Big 12 after seeing these
- 24:46teams, Houston, Arizona, the two teams that collided there,
- 24:51Kansas, it just feels like we never get.
- 24:53As we get ready here on the eve of the NCAA Tournament, give
- 24:56your thoughts overall and the Big 12 and how successful you
- 24:59think it's going to be come bracket time.
- 25:01I think it's going to be a big year for the Big 12.
- 25:03I've even talked to just some friends who are just college
- 25:06basketball fans and, and family and things like that.
- 25:08Like I, I really do think that the Big 12 has a very high
- 25:11ceiling. You have Arizona, of course,
- 25:13Houston as well. And then Iowa State here can
- 25:16definitely make some noise and has the ceiling the potential to
- 25:18go really far. And then you also look at some
- 25:21of the the other top teams like a Kansas or Tech.
- 25:24Obviously it was hurt by injuries, but then you have BYU
- 25:27who with the AJ Debansa factor, you never know how far they can
- 25:31go. So there's really a lot of
- 25:32promising teams. I thought the Big 12 tournament
- 25:34was so much fun, especially once we got to the quarterfinal
- 25:37round, just sticking around and watching some of the other games
- 25:40like that Houston BYU game was a lot of fun and then the semi
- 25:43final round like that Arizona IRA state game, like sign me up
- 25:47for a final four match up like that.
- 25:49Like that's what it's going to be again, like I think it would
- 25:52be just it's just going to be a big year overall for the Big 12.
- 25:54I'm. With you, I've got Houston and
- 25:57Arizona playing in the championship.
- 25:59We'll see if that comes to fruition or not, but I think
- 26:01you're right. It's going to be a very big year
- 26:03for the Big 12. So while from obviously you'll
- 26:06get a better feel for this coming up here today and into
- 26:08tomorrow. How do you think Iowa State,
- 26:11what's their mood like when they arrive at an event like this in
- 26:14Saint Louis? Knowing it's, you know, win or
- 26:16go home? This is it.
- 26:18If you lose, your season comes to.
- 26:20And is this a confident, quietly confident group?
- 26:23Will they be exuding confidence? You've been around them all
- 26:25year. What are they like in advance of
- 26:26a big spot like this? I think particularly going into
- 26:30this week, there seems to be a lot of quiet confidence.
- 26:32Like you look at that game like Arizona, the big total
- 26:36semifinals heartbreaker for Iowa State, the way it ended with a
- 26:39buzzer beater. But the locker room afterwards
- 26:42wasn't necessarily a defeated one.
- 26:44It wasn't like they were hanging their heads.
- 26:46They know that there is plenty for them to grow.
- 26:48But I also felt like that trip to Kansas City, the team feels
- 26:51like that they're they left Kansas City in a better place
- 26:53than they were when they first came in.
- 26:55It was just such a big three days for them and now going
- 26:59against the NCAA tournament, they're looking to continue to
- 27:01build off of that. You want to peak at the right
- 27:03time and and right now, obviously the the lobster
- 27:07Arizona showed that there's still room for growth, but it
- 27:09also proved that they are really up there with some of the best
- 27:12around in the country and and they're looking to prove it.
- 27:14So I'd say it's more of a quiet confidence.
- 27:16There's definitely no brash. There's no overlooking,
- 27:19especially to just be humbled like that and with the buzzer
- 27:22beater. But the team is in a good spot
- 27:24right now. And and I think that the program
- 27:26veterans like attainment lips here, Joshua Jefferson or
- 27:29Chilovich. They hide you who's participated
- 27:31in the NCAA tournament before. Like those guys are going to
- 27:33really set the tone and the rest of the team is going to follow.
- 27:36But you know, whether you're a newcomer or an old timer, you
- 27:39love this time of year. This is what you play the game
- 27:41for. You dreamed of this moment and
- 27:43and for came and Lipsy and Joshua Jefferson, Nate hide you.
- 27:45This is their Last Tango. So I expect them to go all out
- 27:48for sure. Tennessee State first up, not
- 27:51pretty good. Tennessee State making the
- 27:54tournament for the first time since the early 90s on the Ken
- 27:57Pomeroy era. This is the 304th ranked program
- 28:00baiting dating back the last. Would it be almost 30 years now
- 28:04of data going back Tennessee State should be and also
- 28:08dominant performance in this one.
- 28:10Anything jump out though, about the Tennessee State team that
- 28:13says and maybe they can hang around for a bit?
- 28:16I think it's their ability to generate turnovers.
- 28:18They're one of the top turnover creating teams in the country.
- 28:21I think they ranked 20th in defensive turnover rate, which
- 28:24is impressive. And as we know Iowa State as
- 28:27itself on that side of the ball. But when you look at upsets,
- 28:29when you look at what teams do, it's that ability to create
- 28:32extra possessions or make the opponent uncomfortable.
- 28:34So for Iowa State, they're going to need to take care of the
- 28:37ball. And of course, Tennessee State's
- 28:39guards, they're led by Travis Harper and Aaron Akroma.
- 28:42Those two guys, even though they're in the Ohio Valley
- 28:45Conference, I think that there are a bunch of Ballers that can
- 28:47definitely fill up the basket for Iowa State.
- 28:52It just take care of the ball and really limit on those two.
- 28:55I do think that they should take care of business, but obviously
- 28:58you want to show you want to shut the door on any type of
- 29:01upset or any type of Ave. for that to happen.
- 29:05Eugene, I'm sure you've peeked ahead a little bit.
- 29:07Santa Clara, Kentucky. Then in the round of 32, Herb
- 29:10Sendak's done a great job at Santa Clara, Guy that's won a
- 29:12ton of games and Kentucky's Kentucky, even though this is
- 29:15not a vintage Kentucky team, you know, they still got dudes
- 29:18there. A peek ahead to that second
- 29:20round matchup and who you think they're going to see and and how
- 29:23Iowa State matches up with both those teams.
- 29:26Yeah, I think that this is a pretty favorable path through
- 29:28this first pod for Iowa State, like you mentioned Kentucky, so
- 29:32Kentucky, but they're they don't have the same luster as they
- 29:35once did. They they had very high
- 29:36expectations coming in to the season, obviously
- 29:39underperformed, but they still have guys that go take away and
- 29:42and a couple of good guards there that there's definitely
- 29:45still talent there. And then you look at Santa
- 29:47Clara, I think it's your classic mid major team that is good at
- 29:50winning. They they win a lot of games.
- 29:52They're just so consistent. They're very sound and fun in
- 29:54their fundamentals and what they try to do.
- 29:57I personally think I would say will face Kentucky, but I think
- 30:00regardless of who that second round matchup is, I think I
- 30:03would State Fair as well. Just with its defense, its
- 30:05physicality, its ability to turn people over and if the offense
- 30:09is going to start to click like it showed in the last couple of
- 30:11rounds, or I would say honestly all three rounds of the the Big
- 30:1512 tournament that they played in, they should be in great
- 30:17hands. Off to Chicago, the Des Moines
- 30:20Registers, Eugene repay and Travis Hines will go.
- 30:23Good stuff. Eugene, thanks for coming on.
- 30:25Appreciate it. We will look forward to your

- 32:43State, a 24 1/2 point favorite over Tennessee State.
- 32:49You know what? Yeah.
- 32:51Yeah, I'll take the 24. Yeah, I've been the points you
- 32:54and I is is getting 9 1/2 from St.
- 32:57John's. I don't think they had give me
- 33:00St. John's all the way all.
- 33:02Right Iowa, 2 1/2 point favorite over Clemson.
- 33:07Clemson. Does Nebraska get out of the
- 33:10first weekend? I'm a Husker fan, is Danny knee
- 33:14coaching? That would be Fred Hoiberg, as
- 33:16you know. Yeah, I know.
- 33:18Yeah, give me Nebraska. All right, here's the
- 33:20tiebreaker. Iowa and Iowa State women, their
- 33:23first game, they will come just them.
- 33:26They will combine to score how many points closest without
- 33:29going over Joe. 136. Enjoy the games, Joe.
- 33:33Thank you. Yep, good to talk to you.
- 33:36Rob Luther is next. Hey coach, how's retirement?
- 33:39Kenny, how are you? Hey, absolutely.
- 33:42You'll like it, huh? You'll love it, You'll love it.
- 33:46Good stuff. All right, Iowa State is a 24
- 33:491/2 point favorite, Rob. Let's lay it Iowa State.
- 33:54You and I is getting 9 1/2 from St.
- 33:56John's. I'm going to take Saint John.
- 34:00Iowa gives 2 1/2 to Clemson. I think everybody's on the
- 34:05Hawks. I'm taking Clemson.
- 34:06Does Nebraska get out of the first weekend?
- 34:10No way. Iowa and Iowa State women
- 34:13combined to score how many points, coach?
- 34:161:30. Thanks, Rob.
- 34:19Good to hear from you buddy. Good seeing you man talk.
- 34:22Soon. Yep, absolutely.
- 34:24Terrence is next. Hi, Terrence, How are you?
- 34:27I'm doing great. How you doing?
- 34:28Today, doing good 24 1/2 is what Iowa State is giving to
- 34:32Tennessee State. Iowa State.
- 34:35You and I gets 9 1/2 from St. John's St.
- 34:40John's, Iowa, a 2 1/2 point favorite over Clemson, Iowa.
- 34:45Does Nebraska get out of the first weekend?
- 34:49Yes, Iowa and Iowa State women combined to score how many
- 34:53points? Turns. 137.
- 34:58Enjoy the games Turns. Thanks for listening.
- 35:02Thank you I. Appreciate it.
- 35:03And Brett is our final contestant.
- 35:05Hi, Brett. Hey, guys.
- 35:08Iowa State, 24 1/2 point favorite over Tennessee State.
- 35:12Tennessee State, you and I is getting 9 1/2 from St.
- 35:15John's. You and I Iowa 2 1/2 point
- 35:19favorite over Clemson Iowa, Nebraska get out of the first
- 35:23weekend no Iowa and Iowa State women combined to score how many
- 35:30points closest without going over is our tiebreaker in game
- 35:341138. Thank you.
- 35:36Have a good weekend, Brett. Appreciate it.
- 35:38Thanks. Good to talk to you and there
- 35:40you going. No consensus, I don't think.
- 35:43Is no. We got down to the wire with the
- 35:44Panthers, but Brett jumped aboard with you and I as we had
- 35:48three straight with Saint John's.
- 35:50You think your Huskers are getting a Sweet 16?
- 35:52Oscars, I think they're going to win an alternate, so they would
- 35:56play Vandy if it goes according to.
- 35:58Seed if it does play out according to seed, yes.
- 36:01Do they win their first game? Yes, I think so too.
- 36:04I think that they get off the schneid.
- 36:06I don't think this Troy team is very good, but.
- 36:09A lot of folks, a lot of Troy, take the points love out there
- 36:12in the game, though, I can't. Get there.
- 36:15What's the plucky? Dog that everybody is on and
- 36:17everybody's going to be wrong. The one Well, it feels like
- 36:20South Florida is too easy now, especially with Nichelle Brown
- 36:23up for Louisville. Don't include them.
- 36:25I agree because Mikkel Brown being out that yeah Akron over
- 36:29Texas Tech seem to be a lot of love for Akron.
- 36:32I can see it. Watched them a couple of times
- 36:35in the Mack tournament, saw them in the regular season against
- 36:37Miami, Ohio, I I can definitely see it.
- 36:41I like Akron though. McNeese is the one.
- 36:44Did it a year ago where they're the only 12 seed and the only
- 36:48really upset that we had it. Was Pom Mike?
- 36:50Pom said there was hardly any. That was 1.
- 36:54I don't love their match up. I know I'm grabbing the points
- 36:56against Vanderbilt though. The one, though, it's so
- 37:01wide-ranging and I just get, I hear so many opinions that it
- 37:05feels like there's an opinion. I've heard an opinion on every
- 37:07team. So I've got an opinion.
- 37:08Let me run this one by you. OK?
- 37:10If we have another opening, 2 days of the tournament where
- 37:14there are no where there are no upsets.
- 37:16Is NIL room in college basketball the NCAA tournament?
- 37:19No, because this season has also been pretty special.
- 37:23You look at, in terms of viewership, the freshman.
- 37:27The freshman been unbelievable. The name brands that we have
- 37:29had, college basketball is on an uptick right now, so I wouldn't
- 37:33say that. And though we love those upsets,
- 37:36we also know we don't like Saint Peter's in the Sweet 16.
- 37:40Really. We have also learned that
- 37:42component to it. It's great, but you don't want
- 37:45San Diego State and Florida Atlantic in your Final Four.
- 37:48As fun as it is as sports fans for the viewing public, that is
- 37:52not what they want. They want the blue bloods.
- 37:54They want the great match ups in the Sweet 16, in the Elite 8 and
- 37:58certainly in the final. 4 So does CBS.
- 38:00Yes, they do in a big time way. So no, I will say it's not it
- 38:05just I think we have to evolve with it.
- 38:08I'm not willing to jump, willing to jump head first into, well,
- 38:12upsets are dead. It was one year, yeah, a one
- 38:15year sample size. And we've seen this happen
- 38:17before. Well, I hope Cinderella's not
- 38:18that I have a feeling she's on life support.
- 38:20You do? Yeah, I just do.
- 38:22We'll we'll see. It sounds as though the WNBA,
- 38:25since we're talking basketball, they're going to play.
- 38:27It sounds like there's a degree. Boy, oh boy, they players and
- 38:30it's long overdue. Sounds like they got paid.
- 38:33They. It sounds like a very a huge
- 38:35race for a lot of them. Good.
- 38:37You know, with with the upper echelon players may be
- 38:39ineligible to make over $1,000,000.
- 38:41I hope Major League Baseball. Yeah, not gonna happen.
- 38:44I just have a bad feeling. You too.
- 38:45I have a bad. Feeling.
- 38:47Take the momentum. I agree with the WNBA and find a
- 38:52way. Yes, baseball, find a way.
- 38:55Yeah. It's everything.
- 38:56Every sport. It's millionaires and
- 38:58billionaires. I know, I know, I.
- 39:00Despise it. Do you have any plays?
- 39:04Are you betting anything tonight?
- 39:05You've got some NIT, you've got a couple of opening round games.
- 39:09Yeah, grabbed by him of Ohio. That was in the opener.
- 39:11I grabbed them right? Away 7 1/2. 7 1/2 down to 6 1/2.
- 39:15I'll tell you though, like analytically.
- 39:18SMU Scott, he's got all the analytics in their favor.
- 39:20Absolutely. So if you're a full time
- 39:23believer in that, you're definitely going to be in the
- 39:25Mustangs. I will play Prairie View.
- 39:27They are the 16 TC getting points.
- 39:29So we'll grab the three and a half a little sprinkle on the
- 39:31money line also we'll grab the plus 140 with a little half you
- 39:35to play on that one. But the NIT, nothing really
- 39:38jumped out. I'm gonna be keeping an eye out
- 39:40on the West Coast as Murray State goes out to take on Steve
- 39:44Alford. As you know, I love betting
- 39:47against Steve Alford. Couldn't get there with a
- 39:49number. Of them, really.
- 39:50Yeah, I've, I've circled hard around Murray State and couple
- 39:53of different things that I like to do 8 1/2 was not enough
- 39:56though for me against the wolf. I know you fill up more than one
- 40:00bracket. Your national championship on
- 40:02most of those brackets is the match up and then the winner.
- 40:05It was Michigan now. I still got what, 22 hours?
- 40:09I guess No 21 hours before anything official.
- 40:12I'll put out one official bracket out there, but I'm in so
- 40:16many different contests. One of my favorite contests I'm
- 40:18in. You have to pick eight teams.
- 40:20Any eight you want, but the total seed has to add up to 50
- 40:24or more. I love that contest.
- 40:27It is so fun, so entertaining. I mean, the maturations that
- 40:31they're thinking through, you wouldn't be able to do it, no.
- 40:33Because I can get past 7. Exactly.
- 40:36Well, you can't just take all the number ones and number twos.
- 40:39That's one of my favorite ones that I have, but great time of
- 40:42year. Absolutely love it and can't
- 40:44wait to come back and talk about Down to 16 on Monday.
- 40:47And three of them reside in our state.
- 40:51I'm just saying, wouldn't that be fun to be able to talk about
- 40:54on Monday? Have a great four days, enjoy
- 40:57the tournament. Coming up next off the bench
- 41:00with Lucas and Sean Miller and Condon with you Monday through
- 41:02Friday, noon to two Talk sports with you, the Iowa Sports Radio
- 41:06Network.
