Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / Republicans 'need to be voted out' Why these MAGA voters broke with Trump
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Final day to vote in the midterms, just 12 days away.
- 0:03Speaker 1: One of the issues that has really taken hold for
- 0:06Speaker 1: voters this time around is data centers. Fights over those
- 0:10Speaker 1: centers could be a factor in who controls Congress potentially.
- 0:12Speaker 1: And President Trump is facing opposition to his support for
- 0:16Speaker 1: AI data centers from some of his most loyal supporters.
- 0:20Speaker 1: CNN's Donia O'Sullivan spoke to voters in Kentucky on why
- 0:22Speaker 1: they're breaking with the president on this issue.
- 0:27Speaker 2: We are responding to this huge data center overreach, what
- 0:30Speaker 2: looks like an invasion across our country, this explosion.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Here in Maysville, Kentucky, a Trump stronghold, activists and locals
- 0:39Speaker 3: have gathered to protest the building of a massive AI
- 0:43Speaker 3: data center by Mark Zuckerberg's Meta.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Not all progress is good, all right?
- 0:50Speaker 3: President Trump recently, I think he said, you know, communities
- 0:54Speaker 3: that don't want AI centers want to stay backward or
- 0:56Speaker 3: something like that. I did hear that. When you hear that,
- 0:59Speaker 3: how did you feel?
- 1:00Speaker 2: I said, well, I guess I'm going to be backwards
- 1:02Speaker 2: and poor. But I also want to reiterate that not
- 1:06Speaker 2: everything the president does do I agree with, but not
- 1:08Speaker 2: everything my husband does do I agree with.
- 1:10Speaker 5: I'm Republican, but due to his stance, I feel he's
- 1:13Speaker 5: going to cost the Republicans the House and the Senate.
- 1:17Speaker 5: Maybe not big margins. It might be very slim margins.
- 1:20Speaker 5: But he needs to reverse his stance.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Max Moran is among the locals who have organized to
- 1:25Speaker 3: oppose the data center.
- 1:27Speaker 5: So that is Delcia there. She's actually nearly blind in
- 1:32Speaker 5: her eyes. She's one of the landowners we've been helping
- 1:35Speaker 5: since last year. They felt coerced into signing these contracts
- 1:39Speaker 5: to sell their land.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Zuckerberg and Mehta should have never walked out of that
- 1:44Speaker 4: courtroom with a dime left in their damn pockets.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Yeah!
- 1:53Speaker 3: Delcia and her mother, Ida, live on a 1,200-acre farm
- 1:58Speaker 3: a few miles outside of town. The pair made headlines
- 2:03Speaker 3: around the world when it was reported they turned down
- 2:06Speaker 3: $ 26 million to sell their land.
- 2:11Speaker 4: They come through the door around May 2, 2025. They said,
- 2:14Speaker 4: we want to buy your land for $ 35, 000 an acre.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Technically, on the contract, you don't know who's trying to
- 2:24Speaker 3: buy your land.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Nope, it's a non-disclosure agreement.
- 2:28Speaker 3: But people here believe it's Mark Zuckerberg. It's meta.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Mom goes through the contracts, really, with fine-tooth comb. She says,
- 2:36Speaker 4: I don't care what you do, but get out of this.
- 2:39Speaker 3: What does the land mean to both of you?
- 2:43Speaker 4: Freedom. Yeah, life and freedom. Should I choose to... I
- 2:49Speaker 4: live totally off of this land that we've got.
- 2:51Speaker 6: I could.
- 2:52Speaker 4: I wouldn't have to be beholden to anything out there.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Did they tell you what they wanted to do with
- 2:59Speaker 3: the land?
- 3:00Speaker 4: No, they did not tell us what they wanted to
- 3:01Speaker 4: do with the land. They were just in a very
- 3:04Speaker 4: big hurry to get it off you as fast as possible.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Trump won this Kentucky county in the last election by
- 3:12Speaker 3: a 44-point margin.
- 3:15Speaker 4: I voted for Trump. I have every time he's run.
- 3:19Speaker 4: I'd go questioning it now.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Trump said if you're against data centers, you're going to
- 3:26Speaker 3: end up backward and poor.
- 3:28Speaker 4: And that sort of pisses you off when you're from
- 3:30Speaker 4: Appalachia anyway. You've always been backward and poor.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Do you think this issue is going to hurt Republicans
- 3:36Speaker 3: in the midterms?
- 3:38Speaker 4: I hope it hurts them. They need to be voted out.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Voted out.
- 3:45Speaker 3: In this Bible Belt household... This fight is spiritual. For you,
- 3:52Speaker 3: it's about more than land.
- 3:54Speaker 4: It's about humanity. If we don't stop this, there's not
- 3:58Speaker 4: going to be a future for humanity. That's anti-human. That's
- 4:03Speaker 4: what AI is. Oh, let's let it make the decision.
- 4:07Speaker 4: But it doesn't have any morals. And it can't be
- 4:10Speaker 4: held to God's standards.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Is there any amount of money Zuckerberg can give you?
- 4:17Speaker 3: to get the hell out of here? Nope, no.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Really?
- 4:21Speaker 5: Really.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Her last words to him was, you may get it,
- 4:27Speaker 4: but you have brought me out of your feet first.
- 4:31Speaker 4: You can bring the bulldozers if you want to. You'll
- 4:33Speaker 4: have to bulldoze it down around my head.
- 4:36Speaker 3: You're really going up against, it's David and Goliath here.
- 4:41Speaker 4: But I'll remind you, it only took one stone to
- 4:43Speaker 4: bring down a Philistine. One itty-bitty little stone in the
- 4:48Speaker 4: right place can bring down any giant that there is
- 4:51Speaker 4: on this planet.
- 4:52Speaker 6: There is one state, one state where I'm really looking
- 4:55Speaker 6: for the impact of AI and data centers. It's the
- 4:58Speaker 6: state of Ohio. It's the Buckeye State because the New
- 5:01Speaker 6: York Times-CNN University poll polled across all the key swing states,
- 5:05Speaker 6: all the key Senate races. and the state in which
- 5:07Speaker 6: the highest share of voters said across those swing states that,
- 5:11Speaker 6: in fact, data centers was their most important issue, it was,
- 5:14Speaker 6: in fact, the state of Ohio. You can see it
- 5:17Speaker 6: right here. It's in blue. It is an issue that
- 5:20Speaker 6: Sherrod Brown, of course, the former senator trying to become
- 5:22Speaker 6: the next senator from Ohio, has been running on. Data
- 5:26Speaker 6: centers is huge in Ohio. A lot of money has
- 5:29Speaker 6: been spent on data centers there in terms of the advertisements.
- 5:32Speaker 6: So to me, this is the state where if data
- 5:34Speaker 6: centers are going to have an impact, is going to
- 5:36Speaker 6: be the great state of Ohio, Boris.
- 5:38Speaker 7: A lot of money has also been spent on that
- 5:40Speaker 7: bow tie. It looks absolutely luxurious.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 5:43Speaker 6: I think this is the first time I've worn a
- 5:45Speaker 6: tie on air since 2018 or something like that. I
- 5:50Speaker 6: figured I'd do something special for you.
- 5:51Speaker 7: You may want to move it just up slightly.
- 5:54Speaker 6: What do I know about putting on ties anyway? As
- 5:56Speaker 6: I said, it's been like eight years since.
- 5:58Speaker 4: I wore one.
- 5:59Speaker 7: How do voters in Ohio, to get back to the point,
- 6:01Speaker 7: feel about data centers generally? Do they welcome them?
- 6:06Speaker 4: No, no.
- 6:07Speaker 6: I mean, no, they feel about them the same way
- 6:10Speaker 6: that my ability is to put on a bow tie.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Poor, poor.
- 6:13Speaker 6: I mean, look at this. I mean, just take a
- 6:15Speaker 6: look here. OK, Ohio net support for data centers. Overall,
- 6:18Speaker 6: it's 32 points, 32 points in the negative. And what
- 6:22Speaker 6: about those non-college voters? Those are the voters, of course,
- 6:25Speaker 6: that Donald Trump had really connected to. in his three
- 6:28Speaker 6: bids for the presidency in 2016, 2020, 2024, that allowed
- 6:32Speaker 6: him to carry the state of Ohio all three times
- 6:34Speaker 6: after Barack Obama had carried it twice. And look at this,
- 6:37Speaker 6: non-college voters, the net support for data centers. I mean,
- 6:40Speaker 6: this is way down there in the Ohio River. 38
- 6:43Speaker 6: points underwater. So no matter which way you splice it
- 6:46Speaker 6: or slice it, what we're seeing is data centers is
- 6:49Speaker 6: something that, of course, Democrats would want to run on,
- 6:51Speaker 6: given that President Trump, of course, has been very much
- 6:54Speaker 6: in support of him. And perhaps there's no clearer the
- 6:56Speaker 6: case than the great state of Ohio.
- 6:58Speaker 7: So who then benefits from that sentiment among voters in
- 7:03Speaker 7: terms of who's running for office?
- 7:05Speaker 6: You know, this is one of those issues, right, when
- 7:07Speaker 6: it comes to data centers and AI that almost seem
- 7:09Speaker 6: to pop up overnight, right? But one of the people
- 7:12Speaker 6: who's been running hardest on it is Sherrod Brown, right?
- 7:16Speaker 6: We spoke about him trying to re-become a senator from
- 7:19Speaker 6: the great state of Ohio. And, I mean, you can
- 7:21Speaker 6: see it right here. Ohio Senate trusts more in data centers. Overall,
- 7:25Speaker 6: Sherrod Brown by 10 points. That, in fact, I believe
- 7:27Speaker 6: was the largest lead of any Democratic candidate across the
- 7:30Speaker 6: key swing states that the New York Times pulled. A
- 7:32Speaker 6: 10 point advantage. And among the non-college voters, look at this.
- 7:35Speaker 6: Sherrod Brown by four, a group that overwhelmingly went for
- 7:38Speaker 6: Donald Trump on the key issue of data centers. They
- 7:41Speaker 6: are trusting Sherrod Brown even just a slight bit more
- 7:44Speaker 6: than you might expect, given, of course, that non-college voters
- 7:47Speaker 6: had been a base of the Republican Party during the
- 7:49Speaker 6: Trump era. But when it comes to data centers, they
- 7:51Speaker 6: are more likely to trust Sherrod Brown. I expect to
- 7:54Speaker 6: continue to see him running on this election, running on
- 7:57Speaker 6: this issue in this election in the same way that
- 7:59Speaker 6: I'm going to be running to take this bow tie
- 8:01Speaker 6: off once.
- 8:01Speaker 3: We're off the air. No, no, you better keep it on, Harry.
- 8:03Speaker 3: You want me to keep it?
- 8:04Speaker 2: Yes.
- 8:04Speaker 3: You want me to keep it?
