- 7:45Speaker 5: trunk compartment and Brian closed the door on us. The
- 7:48Speaker 5: latch was rigged so that we could push open the
- 7:50Speaker 5: door from the inside. A few minutes later, mister Sullivan
- 7:53Speaker 5: came out, got in the car, and we drove off.
- 7:56Speaker 5: At three minutes to five, we pulled up at the
- 7:58Speaker 5: designated meeting place up in Allegian Park, We waited, nothing happened.

- 9:03Speaker 9: you there, yes, sir, all right, come on, let's get.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Over the car. Right. What's the story? Did he scare off?
- 9:12Speaker 9: The guy had no intention of following through the league?
- 9:15Speaker 9: How come he told us he phoned a couple of
- 9:17Speaker 9: minutes before five am. We tried to trace the call.
- 9:19Speaker 9: He wouldn't stay on the line long or what do
- 9:21Speaker 9: you have to say? A couple of things. Number one,
- 9:24Speaker 9: he wants more money. Number two, he knows we're working
- 9:26Speaker 9: the case.
- 9:27Speaker 8: What was the reaction? Names, he doesn't care. We'll never
- 9:29Speaker 8: get him anyway.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Well, how's the thing stand now?
- 9:32Speaker 6: Fifty thousand dollars he wants it. In the next twelve hours.
- 9:37Speaker 5: More than sixteen hours had passed since word of Judy
- 9:40Speaker 5: Sullivan's abduction had been phoned into homicide. During that time,
- 9:44Speaker 5: an APB containing the descriptions of the suspect, his car,
- 9:47Speaker 5: and his victim had been dispatched to law enforcement agencies
- 9:50Speaker 5: throughout the entire area. The same descriptions were being broadcast
- 9:54Speaker 5: every hour. The Sullivan home had been placed under strict surveillance,
- 9:58Speaker 5: and mister Sullivan instructed to contact the suspect without the
- 10:01Speaker 5: knowledge of the police. The girl's father had raised almost
- 10:05Speaker 5: ten thousand dollars in cash to buy him off, and
- 10:08Speaker 5: the serial numbers on each one of the bills had
- 10:10Speaker 5: been copied by a police stenographer and rechecked by a
- 10:12Speaker 5: homicide officer. So far, the wolf, as he called himself,
- 10:17Speaker 5: had made three separate contacts, but he'd covered his tracks well.
- 10:21Speaker 5: We knew he was somewhere in the city, four hundred
- 10:23Speaker 5: and fifty square miles of it. We knew we had
- 10:26Speaker 5: to find him. Six eighteen am we checked back into homicide.
- 10:31Speaker 3: What's doing Broy here?
- 10:32Speaker 10: Just copy the letter Fellas Special delivery came in about
- 10:35Speaker 10: twenty five minutes ago.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Let's see, huh, that's the same handwriting. It looks like.
- 10:40Speaker 9: Check the postmarks Jill must have mailed it right after
- 10:42Speaker 9: he grabbed a girl. Let me see, stay away from Sullivan.
- 10:46Speaker 9: If the girl's found dead, it's your fault.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Stay away, woolf It seemed to make up his mind.
- 10:51Speaker 5: Huh They checking the original of this for Prince Tom Yeah,
- 10:54Speaker 5: no word yet.
- 10:55Speaker 3: How about that second note? Anything on that? Uh? Huh?
- 10:58Speaker 6: Stah lifted a couple of princes running on R and I.
- 11:01Speaker 3: Who's watching Sullivan house now?
- 11:02Speaker 5: Gomez and Thaxter chiefs out there too. He's still afraid
- 11:05Speaker 5: the girl's father will try to make a deal with
- 11:06Speaker 5: the guy.
- 11:07Speaker 3: He tried it yet? No, not yet. Well, he couldn't
- 11:09Speaker 3: blame him if he did. He's worried, sick. I'm got it.
- 11:14Speaker 8: Homicside from now a right?
- 11:16Speaker 3: Try? How do you spell it? Okay? Right?
- 11:22Speaker 9: Yeah, thanks a lot, Record Bureau. Those two prints still
- 11:26Speaker 9: lifted from a letter. Run him to the single print file.
- 11:28Speaker 9: Any luck, they got a mink.
- 11:34Speaker 5: The fingerprint that was lifted from the suspects letter was
- 11:37Speaker 5: identified as belonging to a Donald Alfred Kiefer, WMA, aged
- 11:41Speaker 5: twenty nine, five feet eight inches, one hundred and seventy pounds,
- 11:44Speaker 5: brown eyes, dark brown hair.
- 11:47Speaker 3: He had one.
- 11:47Speaker 5: Previous arrest for forgery in Los Angeles ten months before.
- 11:51Speaker 5: At the time of his arrest, Keeper's occupation was listed
- 11:54Speaker 5: as a bank clerk at the Third National Bank. I
- 11:57Speaker 5: went down the hall of the record bureau to pull
- 11:59Speaker 5: the crime report. Brian checked by Layton Prince to see
- 12:02Speaker 5: if they'd gotten anything off the last note from the suspect.
- 12:06Speaker 5: Ben went to check with Don Meyer and handwriting. Seven
- 12:09Speaker 5: twenty three am. Chief bad Brown got back to the office.
- 12:12Speaker 5: I showed him Keeper's crime report.
- 12:14Speaker 3: All right, what's the rundown on it? Well, at the.
- 12:16Speaker 5: Time Keifer pulled the forgery job at the bank, mister
- 12:19Speaker 5: Sullivan was one of the vice presidents. He was the
- 12:21Speaker 5: one that preferred charges against Keifer, and he saw that
- 12:23Speaker 5: he was prosecuted.
- 12:25Speaker 3: Where's this Keifer? Now, let me check that it was
- 12:28Speaker 3: placed on probation.
- 12:29Speaker 5: On May sixteenth this year, he returned to his home
- 12:32Speaker 5: in Omaha, Nebraska. That's thirteen eighty McK and I avenue.
- 12:35Speaker 3: You call Omaha. I got the call in now.
- 12:37Speaker 5: Ben took an exemplar of Keefer's handwriting from the package.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Don Meyer's going over it.
- 12:41Speaker 8: Now, Chief Hi, what about that last note?
- 12:45Speaker 3: I got the report right? Here.
- 12:46Speaker 10: How's it look well, Stallft, that's some prince off It
- 12:49Speaker 10: brought him out with the ion fume gun. They matched
- 12:51Speaker 10: with the first. There's something else, what's that? They examined
- 12:54Speaker 10: the paper for watermarks and texture. Both notes are written
- 12:57Speaker 10: on the same paper. Impressions show both pieces the paper
- 13:00Speaker 10: from the same TABN checked the density of the carbon
- 13:03Speaker 10: and the pencil they used. Both specimens match same pencil.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Joe, Hi, did you catch up a down run man? Yeah?
- 13:10Speaker 3: He went over. The handwriting looks pretty good. What's the word?
- 13:13Speaker 3: As close as you can get here.
- 13:14Speaker 9: They're two exemplars Flanc's crosses double loops, his ale open
- 13:20Speaker 9: as prasure on the Downstow Donald Keefer the wool, same handwriting.
- 13:28Speaker 5: By noontime, Donald Keeper's description had been broadcast throughout the
- 13:32Speaker 5: entire area. Bulletins were dispatched to all departments, and a
- 13:35Speaker 5: supplementary APB was gotten out. Special details were stationed at
- 13:39Speaker 5: every post office in the city to watch for notes
- 13:42Speaker 5: from the suspect that might come through the mail. The
- 13:45Speaker 5: bus depots, railroad terminals, the airports, and all main roads
- 13:48Speaker 5: leading out of the city were kept under strict surveillance.
- 13:52Speaker 5: The entire Los Angeles area was broken down into single
- 13:55Speaker 5: square mile districts and a house to house canvas was started.
- 13:58Speaker 5: A squad of men were assign to cover each square mile.
- 14:02Speaker 5: Outlying towns and cities were requested to do the same.
- 14:05Speaker 5: By four o'clock that afternoon, one of the greatest dragnet
- 14:08Speaker 5: operations in the history of the city was underway. We
- 14:11Speaker 5: were sure Donald Keeper was somewhere inside. Five twelve pm,
- 14:15Speaker 5: we got the call back from the Omaha police.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Is that so again? Please?
- 14:20Speaker 8: What was that six x ray four to one nine
- 14:24Speaker 8: Nebraska plates?
- 14:25Speaker 3: Right? Find lieutenant? Thank you, Bry They made the car.
- 14:30Speaker 9: That and a lot more. The Omaha cops are looking
- 14:32Speaker 9: for Keeper too, and they want him for a robbery.
- 14:34Speaker 3: There're two months ago.
- 14:35Speaker 9: Huh he used to stolen blue Sedanan in robbery in
- 14:38Speaker 9: nineteen thirty nine, model Nebraska plate six x ray four
- 14:41Speaker 9: one nine.
- 14:41Speaker 3: What about his family and friends? They've been checked.
- 14:43Speaker 9: Yeah, they say Keifer left Omaha about six weeks ago.
- 14:46Speaker 9: I don't know where he was heading. We better get
- 14:48Speaker 9: that car description in the communic cases. Huh, apb in
- 14:50Speaker 9: a radiogram?
- 14:51Speaker 3: Yeah right?
- 14:52Speaker 9: Friday, Mary, Yeah, what are you tied up with? Just
- 14:55Speaker 9: got a call back from Omaha. Make on Keifer in
- 14:57Speaker 9: the car, give it to me. You two get out
- 14:59Speaker 9: to sell them in the house. Fat so you can't
- 15:00Speaker 9: see Harris out there.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Okay, what happened? Mister Sullivan has disappeared.
- 15:14Speaker 4: You are listening to dragnet authentic stories of your police
- 15:18Speaker 4: force in action.
- 15:26Speaker 5: Wednesday, October nineteenth, five forty eight pm, Ben and I
- 15:29Speaker 5: drove out to the Sullivan home where we checked with
- 15:32Speaker 5: Bert Harris, the man who had been assigned to watch
- 15:34Speaker 5: mister Sullivan.
- 15:35Speaker 3: He told us that at about three o'clock.
- 15:37Speaker 5: That afternoon, the father of the missing girl had a
- 15:39Speaker 5: phone call.
- 15:40Speaker 3: He said he had to go down to the bank,
- 15:41Speaker 3: and Harris went with him.
- 15:43Speaker 5: While he were at the bank, mister Sullivan succeeded in
- 15:46Speaker 5: decoying Harris with a fake telephone call. While Harris was
- 15:50Speaker 5: answering the call, Sullivan disappeared.
- 15:52Speaker 8: Did mister Sullivan get any more money while he was
- 15:54Speaker 8: at the bank.
- 15:55Speaker 3: By yeah, five thousand dollars? Did you get the serial
- 15:57Speaker 3: numbers off the bills? I shouldn't let him get out
- 15:59Speaker 3: of my sight. I forget it right now. We've got
- 16:01Speaker 3: to find out where he's going to meet Keifer diould
- 16:04Speaker 3: you talk to missus Sullivan about it?
- 16:05Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 16:06Speaker 3: So she doesn't know anything about it. Where is she now?
- 16:08Speaker 3: Back in the sitting room, lying down? Now, let's try
- 16:10Speaker 3: her again how she might be able to help. Okay,
- 16:13Speaker 3: it's back this way. What time he got, Jim, it's
- 16:17Speaker 3: five minutes past six?
- 16:19Speaker 4: I get it.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Hello, how's that?
- 16:25Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 16:25Speaker 3: Where are you? Oh? Where are you? Where are you?
- 16:33Speaker 3: All right? We'll be right out.
- 16:36Speaker 5: Yeah, missus Sullivan he met with Keifer out and Laurel Canyon.
- 16:41Speaker 3: Did he get his daughter back? Yeah? He did. Wrapped
- 16:44Speaker 3: in newspaper.
- 16:49Speaker 5: All units in the area were notified immediately that a
- 16:52Speaker 5: contact had been made with the suspect, Donald Keefer. We
- 16:55Speaker 5: got in the car and we drove out to Laurel Canyon.
- 16:57Speaker 5: The entire area had been blocked off. We found Martin
- 17:01Speaker 5: Sullivan standing in the middle of the road. At the
- 17:02Speaker 5: end of East Winding Way. Five hundred feet down the
- 17:06Speaker 5: hill was a private residence where Sullivan and telephoned his
- 17:09Speaker 5: the only building in the immediate vicinity. A few yards
- 17:12Speaker 5: beyond the point where East Winding Way ended back in
- 17:14Speaker 5: a clump of tall grass, we found the body of
- 17:17Speaker 5: twenty two year old Judy Sullivan. We notified the crime
- 17:21Speaker 5: lab chief Fat Brown in the corner. Despite the severe
- 17:25Speaker 5: emotional shock, mister Sullivan told us the story.
- 17:27Speaker 9: He said, Judy was all right. I believed him. I
- 17:31Speaker 9: wanted her back, Judy. I tricked the officer, the one
- 17:37Speaker 9: watching me. Keifer said to come alone, no police. Did
- 17:42Speaker 9: you see his car, mister Sullivan. I wanted her back.
- 17:45Speaker 9: I wanted Judy back. I did as he said. I
- 17:49Speaker 9: drove out here at six o'clock.
- 17:51Speaker 6: I waited. I put the money on the front seat,
- 17:54Speaker 6: like you said.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Did he get the money, sir?
- 17:57Speaker 9: And then I got out. I left the parking lights on.
- 18:01Speaker 9: I stood up there by the end of the road
- 18:03Speaker 9: and I waited, and then he drove up. He took
- 18:08Speaker 9: the money, and then he came up to me. He
- 18:12Speaker 9: had a gun. I wanted Judy back. He had a gun.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Did you see his car? He said?
- 18:20Speaker 7: She was up.
- 18:21Speaker 9: There beyond the road. She was tied to a tree.
- 18:25Speaker 9: He said, I wanted her back.
- 18:30Speaker 3: Oh look, mister Sullivan, did you see his car.
- 18:32Speaker 9: I went to look for Judy. He drove away. She
- 18:38Speaker 9: wasn't there by the tree. I couldn't find her.
- 18:44Speaker 3: Not the way back.
- 18:47Speaker 7: I saw the bump on the way, Yes, sir, lord,
- 18:59Speaker 7: let me find it.
- 19:02Speaker 9: Although I left kill him before he collapsed completely.
- 19:11Speaker 5: We showed the dead girl's father a picture of Donald
- 19:14Speaker 5: Keefer and he identified him definitely. The information was immediately
- 19:18Speaker 5: relayed back to Central Division and rebroadcast over our entire
- 19:21Speaker 5: radio system. Teletypes were dispatched to sheriff's offices and communications
- 19:26Speaker 5: sent to law enforcement agencies throughout the country. Nine fifty
- 19:30Speaker 5: two PM, the house to house search was intensified. The
- 19:34Speaker 5: dragnet operation in which we hoped to trap the killer
- 19:36Speaker 5: was drawing slowly inward. A few minutes before midnight, Ben
- 19:40Speaker 5: and I drove back downtown to the crime lab to
- 19:42Speaker 5: check with Lieutenant Lee Jones.
- 19:45Speaker 3: Ay, Fillas, come on back, anything yealy?
- 19:48Speaker 11: Just checking over these tolls here, I'm rapped around the
- 19:51Speaker 11: girl's body inside the papers, any thing about it?
- 19:54Speaker 3: What's that? Oh?
- 19:55Speaker 11: Yesterday's papers. Every story about the girl's disappearance has been
- 19:59Speaker 11: clipped out.
- 20:00Speaker 3: How about the towels, any laundry marks at all?
- 20:02Speaker 11: Way, nothing so far, Joe, every one of them clipped
- 20:05Speaker 11: off log posts the body.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Yet they're doing it now, nasty one.
- 20:10Speaker 5: Yeah, sure, any footprints or tire marks out where? They
- 20:14Speaker 5: found the body.
- 20:14Speaker 8: Oh, lots of them.
- 20:16Speaker 3: Got two of the men checking them.
- 20:17Speaker 8: Now, one thing, what is it?
- 20:20Speaker 3: Men? I don't know. Under the seam here this towel.
- 20:24Speaker 11: Wait a minute, give me that pair of snippers. Way jo, Yeah,
- 20:30Speaker 11: there you go, thanks, pressed back under the seam.
- 20:34Speaker 3: Here there it's one tag he missed. Yeah, can you
- 20:39Speaker 3: read the marking?
- 20:40Speaker 11: Greenway Apartments, Los Angeles.
- 20:45Speaker 3: Twelve thirty four am.
- 20:47Speaker 5: We located the Greenway Apartments in the East Wiltshire district
- 20:50Speaker 5: and we checked with a manager. He identified Keeper's mugshot,
- 20:53Speaker 5: but he said he hadn't been home to the apartment
- 20:55Speaker 5: since the day before. We called the crime lab and
- 20:58Speaker 5: we went up to check the suspects apartment. One look
- 21:01Speaker 5: was enough. Lieutenant Lee Jones found specimens of the Sullivan
- 21:05Speaker 5: girl's blood in the wash basin and the bathtub drains.
- 21:08Speaker 3: In an adjoining garage, we found.
- 21:10Speaker 5: The car which Keefer had used, a blue Sedan Nebraska
- 21:13Speaker 5: plates six X ray four one nine. A cancelation of
- 21:17Speaker 5: the want order for the car was issued in a
- 21:19Speaker 5: stake out placed at the apartment in the garage in
- 21:21Speaker 5: case Keeper.
- 21:22Speaker 3: Decided to return.
- 21:24Speaker 5: All that night and into the next day, the city
- 21:26Speaker 5: wide dragnet went on, was no sign of the killer.
- 21:30Speaker 5: At ten minutes past two that afternoon, the first piece
- 21:33Speaker 5: of ransom money showed up. It was at a used
- 21:35Speaker 5: car lot on the corner of Beverly and Naylor Streets.
- 21:38Speaker 5: Two hours later, another piece of the money turned up
- 21:41Speaker 5: at a busy downtown department store. In both cases, the
- 21:44Speaker 5: man who passed the stolen money was finally identified as
- 21:47Speaker 5: Donald Keefer. Details were strengthened in both areas where the
- 21:50Speaker 5: money appeared. The search went on six forty two pm.
- 21:54Speaker 5: Then and I got a call to Meat Chief Thad
- 21:56Speaker 5: Brown at the Hollywood Division station. Tommy Bryant from Central
- 21:59Speaker 5: Homicide was within us.
- 22:00Speaker 3: This is the way it stacks up. Now.
- 22:02Speaker 9: This pin map over here, This is where we're concentrating
- 22:04Speaker 9: the search in this area here.
- 22:06Speaker 8: How about the lead we had on him downtown? Didn't
- 22:08Speaker 8: it work out?
- 22:09Speaker 9: The last twenty minutes we picked up three possible leads
- 22:11Speaker 9: on the man out in this neighborhood here. He's divined
- 22:14Speaker 9: south of Franklin, west of Librea, north of Santamoni.
- 22:17Speaker 3: More ransom money show up? You got it there, Brian
- 22:20Speaker 3: rate it off? Yeah.
- 22:22Speaker 10: Five thirty five Sunset and Highland newsboy thought he show
- 22:25Speaker 10: key for crossing the street. Twenty minutes later, a sales
- 22:28Speaker 10: girl in the diamond store up on Hollywood Boulevard, I
- 22:30Speaker 10: thought you saw him. Ten minutes after that, he was
- 22:33Speaker 10: reported seen near the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Lost Parmis.
- 22:36Speaker 10: You figure the reports were reliable and they were all
- 22:38Speaker 10: checked out. Didn't put too much faith in him til
- 22:41Speaker 10: a few minutes ago.
- 22:42Speaker 9: How's that five dollar bill was passed at a cigar
- 22:44Speaker 9: store Hollywood Boulevard and Hawthorne. Ransom money. We've already doubled
- 22:48Speaker 9: the number of men and cars in the area, men
- 22:50Speaker 9: stationed at every intersection to keep an eye on pedestrian traffic.
- 22:53Speaker 9: We're covering everything, streets, stores, covering the whole neighborhood.
- 22:57Speaker 3: I'll get it, Brian, Yeah, just a minute, you chief?
- 23:03Speaker 3: Oh that Brian?
- 23:08Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 23:10Speaker 3: Where how when was that? No?
- 23:13Speaker 9: Stay there, We'll be right there. Goodbye. Another piece of
- 23:17Speaker 9: rentsom money?
- 23:17Speaker 3: Where to turn up?
- 23:18Speaker 9: The theater in Hollywood Boulevard between Fairview and Hawthorne.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Who passed the money?
- 23:22Speaker 9: They think it was Keifer and positive they say he's
- 23:24Speaker 9: in the theater right now.
- 23:29Speaker 5: The information on Keifer was phoned into communications immediately, and
- 23:33Speaker 5: within a few minutes men and cars converged on the neighborhood.
- 23:36Speaker 5: The one half mile area around the theater was completely blockaded.
- 23:40Speaker 5: Every exit and entrance to the theater was covered. Seven
- 23:44Speaker 5: twenty three pm, Ben and I, along with Chief Thad
- 23:46Speaker 5: Brown and Tom Bryan, met in the theater manager's office.
- 23:50Speaker 5: Brown outlined our plan of operation. At seven thirty two pm,
- 23:54Speaker 5: a detail of fourteen men walked down the side aisles
- 23:57Speaker 5: on the main floor of the theater and took up
- 23:59Speaker 5: their posts on either side of the orchestra pit. The
- 24:02Speaker 5: picture was stopped and every light in the theater was
- 24:04Speaker 5: turned on. Chief Brown, Brian Gomez, Faxter, Ben and myself
- 24:08Speaker 5: went down the aisle and up onto the stage.
- 24:11Speaker 3: Chief Brown made the announcement.
- 24:13Speaker 12: Ladies and gentlemen, you're hold it quiet for a minute, please, We're.
- 24:17Speaker 13: Probably to interrupt the picture of This is a very
- 24:19Speaker 13: important matter.
- 24:21Speaker 12: We're police officers and you've read about it. To the
- 24:23Speaker 12: Maidens girl to the name of Judy Sullen was abducted
- 24:26Speaker 12: and murdered day before yesterday. We think we embraced the
- 24:30Speaker 12: man who murdered her to this there. We believe he's
- 24:32Speaker 12: in this diner. Now we've gotta search the theater.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Robi Rowan, we'd like.
- 24:36Speaker 2: To ask your co operation.
- 24:38Speaker 8: Don't need to be Maggie.
- 24:39Speaker 3: You're afraid.
- 24:40Speaker 13: Those who way to lead, now they do.
- 24:42Speaker 3: So see what the man.
- 24:44Speaker 4: Each one of you will be checked as you go out.
- 24:46Speaker 8: Of the door.
- 24:47Speaker 13: But the benefit of the man we're looking for it.
- 24:49Speaker 13: Don't try to escape. Every exit is covered. Hi, heard
- 24:53Speaker 13: you lucky. Don't place any more lives in jerim all right, ha.
- 25:03Speaker 9: Come on, Ben, backstage show.
- 25:09Speaker 3: We can make it from America. All right? Come on,
- 25:11Speaker 3: throw here down here?
- 25:14Speaker 2: Right? Will you in here?
- 25:23Speaker 3: Come on over here, hair conditioning unit for the theater. Yeah,
- 25:32Speaker 3: I don't see him to you, you can't get out.
- 25:34Speaker 3: There's just two exits. We've got them both covered.
- 25:39Speaker 8: Look out there he is all right, keeper, hold it.
- 25:46Speaker 2: All right.
- 25:47Speaker 10: Throw your gun over here, come on, throw it out.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Okay, I got it, all right. Let's take him. Yeah,
- 25:58Speaker 3: all right, okay, you got my gun.
- 26:00Speaker 4: I had to be in your shoot.
- 26:00Speaker 3: Actually, your force meant the cups on him. Ben here right,
- 26:03Speaker 3: get your hands off of me, all right, taver got
- 26:07Speaker 3: the same for you too. I hold it all right, Ben,
- 26:11Speaker 3: You are right, all right? Try the cuffs on him.
- 26:13Speaker 9: Now, yeah, yeah, it's starting to rain again.
- 26:20Speaker 3: Really poorn out there.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess.
- 26:22Speaker 10: You better get him out of the car.
- 26:23Speaker 3: What's the hurry? How you mean, why spoil a good rain?
- 26:34Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true. The names
- 26:38Speaker 2: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 26:40Speaker 4: On January nineteenth, trial was held in Superior Court, Department
- 26:43Speaker 4: eighty seven, City and County of Los Angeles, State of California.
- 26:46Speaker 4: In a moment the results of that trial, Donald Alfred
- 26:58Speaker 4: Keeper was tried and convicted of murder in the first degree,
- 27:01Speaker 4: and on the recommendation of the jury, he received the
- 27:04Speaker 4: death penalty. He was executed in the lethal gas chamber
- 27:07Speaker 4: at the State Penitentiary San Quentin, California. You have just
- 27:20Speaker 4: heard Dragnet, a series of authentic cases from official files.
- 27:23Speaker 4: Technical advice comes from the Office of Chief of Police W. H. Parker,
- 27:27Speaker 4: Los Angeles Police Department. Bartney Arborough is Sergeant Ben Romero
- 27:31Speaker 4: also heard work with Connor and Vic Perrin. Script by
- 27:35Speaker 4: Jim Mozy, music by Walter Schumann, Hell Gibney.
- 27:38Speaker 14: Speaking Counterspy Fights International Intrigue. Next on NBC, Welcome Back Now.
- 28:01Speaker 1: This episode sounded familiar to me and not just in
- 28:04Speaker 1: the sense that I've heard it a few times already,
- 28:08Speaker 1: but that it sounded like another episode, and indeed it was.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Uh And you actually have to go back to nineteen
- 28:18Speaker 1: forty nine and one of the very early episodes of Dragnett.
- 28:22Speaker 1: This was just when the Fatima sponsorship had started, back
- 28:27Speaker 1: on September tenth, nineteen forty nine, in the Sullivan kidnapping. Now,
- 28:32Speaker 1: this wasn't so much a script reuse as you often
- 28:37Speaker 1: hear on many detective programs, but it took the same case.
- 28:42Speaker 1: But there were some key changes that were made, and
- 28:46Speaker 1: a lot of these are minor, but he added up
- 28:49Speaker 1: to quite a bet. One thing is that when the
- 28:52Speaker 1: ransom was paid, this was back when Raymond Bird was
- 28:57Speaker 1: playing at Backstrand, and it made the papers after she'd
- 29:02Speaker 1: been killed, and he said that he hoped that it
- 29:06Speaker 1: would stick in people's minds as a reminder we don't
- 29:11Speaker 1: make deals with killers, so essentially offering a bit of
- 29:15Speaker 1: a condemnation of the victim's father for making the payment.
- 29:20Speaker 1: In the nineteen forty nine episode, it's established that the
- 29:26Speaker 1: killer had been sent to jail for forgery on the
- 29:31Speaker 1: basis of the actions of the father, so this was
- 29:37Speaker 1: a bit of revenge, and that's not in the nineteen
- 29:40Speaker 1: fifty one version. And there's also more of the killer
- 29:45Speaker 1: being like, I'm so much smarter than police. That was
- 29:50Speaker 1: referenced once, but it was a much bigger element in
- 29:53Speaker 1: the nineteen forty nine case. And there's a sense in
- 29:57Speaker 1: which you get a lot less melodrama and a lot
- 30:01Speaker 1: more just straightforward documented case of how the crime was solved. Well,
- 30:08Speaker 1: this is kind of a testament to how Dragnet had
- 30:12Speaker 1: refined itself since the beginning, with these little adjustments in
- 30:17Speaker 1: tone and style. Obviously, the big statement about not paying
- 30:24Speaker 1: killers could come off as preaching, and Dragnet had kind
- 30:27Speaker 1: of and that was not the direction the show was going,
- 30:31Speaker 1: particularly in comparison to many other programs on the air
- 30:35Speaker 1: in the same genre. Now, of course, an important announcement
- 30:40Speaker 1: about the launch of the Dragnet TV series. They had
- 30:44Speaker 1: two episodes that were already filmed and ready for air,
- 30:50Speaker 1: and Dragnet would end up on in every other week
- 30:55Speaker 1: schedule for this first season alternate with the TV version
- 31:01Speaker 1: of Gangbusters, while still continuing the radio version. Well, now
- 31:06Speaker 1: we turn to listener comments and feedback, and we have
- 31:10Speaker 1: some comments We start on Spotify. Regarding the Big Affair,
- 31:14Speaker 1: Mechanics sixty six rides, I disagree about how to deal
- 31:17Speaker 1: with the police. Politely but firmly state I want to
- 31:20Speaker 1: cooperate with you, officer, but first I will need to
- 31:24Speaker 1: consult with my attorney and also have him or her
- 31:28Speaker 1: present at all times. That's certainly a valid approach, probably
- 31:33Speaker 1: the safe approach, and again better than sitting there trying
- 31:38Speaker 1: to just snow the police with an obviously false story.
- 31:46Speaker 1: And of course there are episodes of drag now where
- 31:50Speaker 1: with no lawyer present, the guilty person keeps giving contradictory
- 31:56Speaker 1: statements to the police, which is not something that you
- 32:01Speaker 1: would want brought up in court. And then Harrison adds, Wow,
- 32:06Speaker 1: partial cast credits is a welcome edition. It's awes when
- 32:11Speaker 1: we get them. And then we have another comment for
- 32:16Speaker 1: Mechanics sixty six. This one is regarding the Big Bungalow.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Friday should have given the informant speech to Romero when
- 32:23Speaker 1: he complained about paying for Red's lunch. I can understand
- 32:28Speaker 1: the sentiment, but no explaining it to the listener as
- 32:34Speaker 1: the voice of the police is one thing. As he
- 32:37Speaker 1: is informing us as people who are outside the police
- 32:42Speaker 1: and have been exposed to various media myths and portrayls.
- 32:47Speaker 1: What the situation with informants is with Ben Romero, he
- 32:53Speaker 1: already knows. And imagine if you're a police officer and
- 32:57Speaker 1: you make a complaint to your partner, he says, you
- 33:01Speaker 1: ought not to complain about it. The informants play this
- 33:04Speaker 1: vital role in the police department. We after respect them
- 33:09Speaker 1: and we should be glad for the services they provide.
- 33:12Speaker 1: That is annoying. That is not Joe Friday in the
- 33:15Speaker 1: nineteen fifties. That's Joe Friday in the nineteen eighty seven movie.
- 33:20Speaker 1: Plus cripping about the job is practically Romero's favorite pastime. Plus,
- 33:28Speaker 1: as we'll learn later, Romero was actually the detective who
- 33:34Speaker 1: helped bring Friday along on the force and really is
- 33:38Speaker 1: the only partner that had an equal rank with him.
- 33:42Speaker 1: You don't pull that on a mentor unless you want
- 33:44Speaker 1: a very early look. And of course we should mention
- 33:47Speaker 1: that this is Barton Arborough's last episode, that we'll hear
- 33:52Speaker 1: him as Ben Romero, and we'll talk more about that
- 33:55Speaker 1: next week. Regarding the Big Hands, James says, in response
- 34:01Speaker 1: to one of the comments that you read I distinctly
- 34:04Speaker 1: remember an episode that took place after Miranda rights became
- 34:09Speaker 1: a thing. It made for some interesting dialogue between Joe
- 34:12Speaker 1: Friday and the Chief. Now I thought of the Dragnet
- 34:16Speaker 1: nineteen sixty six TV movie, but I think James was
- 34:20Speaker 1: referencing an episode of the radio program, which wouldn't have
- 34:24Speaker 1: been referencing Miranda versus Arizona since that was decided in
- 34:30Speaker 1: nineteen sixty six. There was another California case in regards
- 34:36Speaker 1: to the admissibility of evidence that had a big impact
- 34:41Speaker 1: on Joe Friday, and it was one of the last
- 34:43Speaker 1: radio episodes, the Big Ruling and then the Butcher five
- 34:48Speaker 1: O three two ass you travel back in time to
- 34:51Speaker 1: nineteen fifty, you have to produce a detective radio program,
- 34:55Speaker 1: and you have an unlimited budget. Give me five cast members,
- 34:59Speaker 1: the themes, along the showwriter, and it would be factor fiction.
- 35:03Speaker 1: Did I leave anything out? Well, No, It's tough to say,
- 35:07Speaker 1: because it's tough to come up with an original Haunts
- 35:12Speaker 1: In terms of nonfiction. I don't know if there's a
- 35:15Speaker 1: particular thing that stands out as a story that must
- 35:18Speaker 1: be told. In terms of fiction, I think I would
- 35:23Speaker 1: probably lean on a couple of adaptations. I'm not going
- 35:26Speaker 1: to try to create my own noir detective. I would
- 35:31Speaker 1: honestly want to make a second season of the New
- 35:36Speaker 1: Adventures of Neural Wolf with Sydney green Street, but I
- 35:42Speaker 1: would want them to be closer to the book in
- 35:45Speaker 1: terms of the tone of the story and to actually
- 35:48Speaker 1: adapt stories of Rex Stout, And as I said, i'd
- 35:53Speaker 1: want green Street back in the main role. Honestly, I'd
- 35:58Speaker 1: love Bob Bailey as Archie Goodwin. I think he's got
- 36:03Speaker 1: a great voice for it. I love Tim Hutton in
- 36:07Speaker 1: a Neural Wolf mystery, but the voice is very, very
- 36:13Speaker 1: New York and doesn't match with the profile of Archie
- 36:18Speaker 1: Goodwin as someone who comes from the Midwest. I think
- 36:22Speaker 1: baileywood evoke that better. For Inspector Kramer, i'd want Ed Bagley,
- 36:30Speaker 1: and for Fritz, I'd go with Hans Conried. And if
- 36:35Speaker 1: you want one that is out of this world, I
- 36:39Speaker 1: would produce a Martian Manhunter radio program. Now, if you're
- 36:45Speaker 1: aware of the Martian Man Hunter at all, you're aware
- 36:49Speaker 1: of him as a Justice superhero from DC. However, when
- 36:54Speaker 1: he was introduced in comics, he was not only a Martian,
- 37:00Speaker 1: but he was a detective stranded on the planet who
- 37:03Speaker 1: solved mysteries. And I think a weekly series about a
- 37:08Speaker 1: Martian in mid nineteen fifties America solving mysteries that would
- 37:13Speaker 1: be fascinating. And I think i'd have the Martian man
- 37:16Speaker 1: Hunter played by Michael Rennie. Now, in terms of who
- 37:20Speaker 1: would write, if you were talking about a neuro Wolf series,
- 37:25Speaker 1: I'd probably pair someone who had a lot of experience
- 37:29Speaker 1: with adaptation, like John C. Wilson or Ernest Conoy with
- 37:34Speaker 1: a talented mystery writer, and I'd probably want to compare
- 37:38Speaker 1: samples to get just the right person. And then for
- 37:43Speaker 1: Martian Manhunter it would probably be Robert Rith and Ernest
- 37:49Speaker 1: Conoy theme song. I would have them write an original
- 37:54Speaker 1: theme tune.
- 37:55Speaker 3: I would not even.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I would not pick stock music or something already existing.
- 38:05Speaker 1: No somewhere I'll find You or anything like that. We
- 38:09Speaker 1: would we would have something original, but I don't know
- 38:13Speaker 1: what it would be since I wouldn't be the one
- 38:16Speaker 1: riding the music. But thanks so much, appreciate the question.
- 38:20Speaker 1: Now it's time to thank our Patreon supporter of the day.
- 38:23Speaker 1: Thank you so much to Richard, Patreon supporter since October

- 38:32Speaker 1: much for your support, Richard, and that we'll do it
- 38:34Speaker 1: for today. If you're enjoying the podcast, please follow us
- 38:37Speaker 1: using your favorite podcast software and be sure to read
- 38:39Speaker 1: and review the podcast wherever you download it from. We'll
- 38:42Speaker 1: be back next Thursday with another episode of Dragonet. But
- 38:45Speaker 1: join us back here tomorrow for yours truly, Johnny doll
- 38:49Speaker 1: Or where.
- 38:50Speaker 15: Two years ago you had Curley sent up to the
- 38:52Speaker 15: pen and that's right for the male department store jobby.
- 38:55Speaker 15: Then just a few days ago he swore that he'd
- 38:56Speaker 15: get you for that, that he'd kill you, didn't he?
- 38:59Speaker 15: So what happened when he escaped and came hit a
- 39:01Speaker 15: heart for a few days ago? I know all about
- 39:03Speaker 15: that from reading your report. Thanks to some quick thinking
- 39:05Speaker 15: on your part, the police nabbed him instead. Plus the
- 39:08Speaker 15: loot from the department store robbery. You know who deserves
- 39:11Speaker 15: a real credit for that, the girl I had a
- 39:12Speaker 15: date with tonight until you spoil things with your phone.
- 39:15Speaker 3: Call, Johnny.
- 39:15Speaker 15: As you know, either you or the police wounded Curly Waters,
- 39:18Speaker 15: which is why he was taken to the hospital and
