- 4:01I am the pastor of Come Home. Stop talking about it. You know
- 4:08a lot of people they leave the church. But I'm telling you come back.
- 4:12You people thinking well I'm gonna leave the church. No, you're leaving
- 4:15God. Don't leave God. Don't leave God. He was not the one
- 4:19who tort you. You, he was not the one who lay your life
- 4:23miserable. So come back to God, get a relationship with him. So
- 4:27my goal is to you know, outreach it, you know, bring people
- 4:30back to God. And I thank God that my son said, what are
- 4:34you? What is your passion? I like, you know, I like
- 4:38to write, so he said, you know, fulfill that. So I
- 4:43got all these kind of books. I'm a gospel songwriter. I got one
- 4:46song out, but do we have twenty songs written? And I'm always learning.
- 4:51I love to learn. So here I am hey, hey, hey,
- 4:57hey man, let Tanya if you would please introduce yourself for those that
- 5:03may reason why I'm doing this because I know everybody tune into y'all shows and
- 5:08they may know who y'all are. But again, this is Hezekaya's platform and
- 5:14we may have some new listeners tuning in that may not know who y'all are.
- 5:17So that's why I want Well. I am Latanya Michelle a little john
- 5:25Um. I am the host of Delay, but not Denied. And I'm
- 5:30also the author of Delay but Not Denied the Story of Tory. UM.
- 5:40So yeah, that's basically me. I'm I'm a writer and a podcaster.
- 5:45Wow, so we want to talk about these books. I want, I
- 5:47want to hear about these books. UM. How many books do you have
- 5:51about Latanya? Um? Right now, one that I've done on my own
- 5:58and about five that I've done. Um as far as anthologies though, so
- 6:05if you would please tell us a little bit about the one that you did
- 6:10by yourself. Okay, again, that's UM titled Delay but Not Denied the
- 6:15Story of Tory. I wrote this book, UM, I want to say
- 6:24in the twenty twenty twenty fourteen. UM, but I didn't get it published
- 6:29until twenty eighteen. I procrastinate really bad. And UM, I just I
- 6:36wrote this book, UM because I was adopted. I was born with a
- 6:44disability. UM, I was a teenage mom. I got married in my
- 6:51early twenties and so I UM, I wrote this book to share my story.
- 7:00And okay, well, when I was born, I was born Tory
- 7:06Michelle Kennedy. UM. I was born with spina bifida and hydrocephilis. UM.
- 7:15The spina bifida is the curvature of the spine. Hydrocephalus is water on
- 7:19the brain. UM. I was born to a teenage mom UM and she
- 7:28already had another child, um My my older brother. UM. Being that
- 7:32I was born with a disability and she was disabled, she had scoliosis and
- 7:38some other things going on, she placed me up for adoption. So UM
- 7:44I went into foster care. UM that caused PTSD for me. UM I
- 7:50was abused in the foster care system. Then I got adopted at seventeen months
- 7:58old. UM And so yeah, my journey, My journey started actually in
- 8:05nineteen eighty one when I got adopted. UM. I've had some issues with
- 8:11not being accepted for being adopted. UM. My grandparents were older, so
- 8:18they believed in having your own children. So my paternal side of the family
- 8:22they didn't. Well, my grandmother, she didn't really care much for me.
- 8:26UM. My maternal grandmother loved me as her own. UM And so
- 8:33UM I grew up not feeling like I belonged anywhere. UM. I went
- 8:39through stages of not knowing who I was. UM just it was just a
- 8:48lot. UM. I got pregnant at fifteen after being told because of my
- 8:54condition that I never have children. Um. And in with this condition,
- 8:58I was told that I wouldn't make it past nine years old. I turned
- 9:01forty four in January. So you know, um, God has the final
- 9:07say over my life. I had my son. I was told not to
- 9:11have my son. You know, you're a kid. You don't need to
- 9:13raise a kid. My son is twenty eight now and he's he's awesome.
- 9:20He he's a supervisor at a Verizon store. He just does so much videoography,
- 9:28photography, He does family pictures, weddings, whatever you know needed he
- 9:35does. But back to my book, I was looking for my biological family.
- 9:43UM. I always asked my mom if I was adopted, and they
- 9:46told me no. And I remember being adopted, and I couldn't shake what
- 9:52I was feeling. So I started digging and digging, and one day I
- 9:58discovered a letter and my mom's dresser drawer that was supposed to be mailed to
- 10:03my biological mom to let her know how my surgery went. So they had
- 10:11the right idea wrong address. And I found this letter and I kept it.
- 10:16I wrote to this letter and because of zoning street zoning, the street
- 10:20no longer existed, and so I got on Facebook in two thousand and eight
- 10:28and played around, and you know, I told my husband my my my
- 10:31prayer has been that God would allow me to meet my mom before she passed
- 10:39away or before I passed away. And so in twenty ten, March third,
- 10:45twenty ten, I found my biological mom. I found my aunts on
- 10:50Facebook, and you know, I shared the pictures with my my husband.
- 10:54I'm like, I looked like these women, and you know, he's like,
- 10:58you know, he didn't want me to get my hopes up high,
- 11:01so he's like, no, I don't think you look like them. I
- 11:03said, well, I'm about to inbox them and see, you know,
- 11:07tell them a little bit of my story to see if any you know,
- 11:11if anything rings a bell to them. And so I reached out to my
- 11:16aunt and she inboxed me later that night, and she was like, I
- 11:20think you may be my sister's daughter. And so, you know, I'm
- 11:26like, okay, cool. And so she told me, she was like,
- 11:30your mom's you know, my sister's in the hospital. So I have
- 11:35to break this to her easy because you know she's going through some things.
- 11:39And I'm like, okay, cool. So the next day, my brother
- 11:43called me and he was in Afghanistan at the time. Hearing his voice for
- 11:48the first time to me was like hearing your first love once you you know,
- 11:56when you fall in love and you get that first call, and that's
- 12:00what it felt like to me. My brother was like, um, you
- 12:03know, he told me who he was and where he was, and you
- 12:07know, we set up a meeting to meet once he got home from Afghanistan,
- 12:13and later that year I went to go meet my mom face to face.
- 12:20I cannot put into words what that felt like to meet her, um,
- 12:28face to face, but I'm glad it happened. Um. This is
- 12:31a picture. I don't know if you can rong way, if you can
- 12:37see, this is the day that I met my mom for the first time.
- 12:41And I put pictures in my book to help tell my story. Um
- 12:46again, I found her in two thousand and ten. We were getting to
- 12:50know each other, m spending time. I spent the whole summer with her.
- 12:54One year and twenty fourteen, she took ill and February twenty second of
- 13:03twenty fourteen she passed away. I was there with her when she passed away.
- 13:11They moved her to hospice. I didn't at that particular time, I
- 13:15didn't even know what hospice was. All I know that is when we got
- 13:20there. The stillness, the piece of it all was scary to me because
- 13:26you know, in hospitals it's not always quiet. There, there's noise and
- 13:31there's movement, and with this, it was just so quiet and still.
- 13:37And I noticed that they wasn't beating her, and so I'm like, you
- 13:41know, why is my mom not getting anything to eat? Granted she wasn't
- 13:46talking, she wasn't moving. I'm like, at least give her something through
- 13:48an IV or something. And so a chaplain explained to me that she was
- 13:54in the end of life stage, and so you know, he was like,
- 14:00I feel like she's ready to go, but I feel like you're keeping
- 14:03her here. And so my mind is like, Okay, this man don't
- 14:09know my mama and he don't know me, so I'm not taking nothing he
- 14:11got to say. I called my husband and I told him. I said,
- 14:15I think I'm gonna stay another night because the chaplain said that my you
- 14:20know, my mom trying to leave and I'm keeping her here. And I
- 14:24was like, you know, I don't None of it made sense to me,
- 14:28and so as I'm saying this to him my aunt and the chaplain is
- 14:33walking up the hall approaching me really slowly. And I told my husband,
- 14:39I said, my mom's gone, and she she did pass away that that
- 14:46night. So, yeah, my book is about all of that, being
- 14:52a teenage mom, being bullied in school. I got bullied because of the
- 14:58way I walked. People would spine a bit of them in some cases,
- 15:03in most instances with the degree of it that I have, or in wheelchairs
- 15:09or have crutches or you know, something to assist them. I don't have
- 15:13any of that. I walked, pigeon tooled, bow leg, you know.
- 15:20And I'm fortunate enough. At that time, I didn't understand my body
- 15:26and why, you know, why God made me the way that he is,
- 15:30you know the way he made me. But as I've gotten older,
- 15:33I've come to understand that my stories for somebody else. I wrote that book
- 15:41to help somebody else that may be going through finding your biological family, having
- 15:50a child at a young age, getting married young. I was twenty three
- 15:54years old when I got married. Me and my husband just celebrated twenty one
- 15:58years marriage. So I wrote I put it all in a book. Yeah,
- 16:03I was gonna ask you, what is your overall message to the people
- 16:07that pick up that book? What do you want them to take away from
- 16:11that book? What I would like to see them to take away from the
- 16:15book is what I always say, even on my podcast. You may be
- 16:18delayed, but God will never deny you. What's meant for you will find
- 16:23you. It may be slow, but if it's meant to happen, it'll
- 16:30happen no matter what it is. If you want to start the business,
- 16:33start the business, you want to write the book, write the book.
- 16:38The only person that can stop you is you. Right. Wow, amazing
- 16:44story, amazing story. And how can they get your book? My book
- 16:49is delayed, but not denied, The story of Tory. I'm going the
- 16:55wrong way. Okay, there it is. It is on Amazon. If
- 17:00you can't remember the title, just type in my name Latania Little John and
- 17:04it pops up. It's a book. It's an e book. Um so
- 17:11um right now. I've dropped the price down so and I made it affordable
- 17:18for anybody that wants to read it. All right, So do you have
- 17:22any projects that you're working on currently? Um, I'm revamping my book because
- 17:30as life goes on, the story goes on. Um, so I have
- 17:36taken this book and added to it. Um, I'm gonna change the cover.
- 17:41There's gonna be more added to the inside. Um. So yeah,
- 17:48Um, that's basically it. I mean this, this book for me is
- 17:53my lifeline. It tells my story from the point of birth until now and
- 18:02so um and as life keeps going there there's always gonna be more. So
- 18:08I don't know, you know what lies ahead if I'll revamp it again,
- 18:14but um, as of right now, UM, that's my baby, and
- 18:18that that's what I'm building on. Look, I tell people, you gotta
- 18:22you gotta ask some old to it. You gotta, Um, you need
- 18:25to do another book. Yeah, it needs to be another book. Yeah,
- 18:30I've heard that. Another book, Yes, ma'am, I've heard that.
- 18:34I've gotten that quite a lot. That should be another book. Forever,
- 18:38it should be another book. Yeah. So apostle sitting over there in
- 18:44the cut, so tell us what this author journey has been like for you
- 18:52since we are in the author's lounge. Well, it gives me an opportunity
- 18:59to talk about everything because God has allowed me to be in different avenues.
- 19:06You know, as an educator, I was able to write about some books
- 19:11that I have, you know, different vessels. I have taught in the
- 19:15classroom. So that's how I got my two children books. I also been
- 19:21a preacher, pastor teacher and all that stuff. I have Bible books out
- 19:26too, and so my first book was about my mom, and so we'll
- 19:33talk about her. And so I have five published books that I have published
- 19:38on my own, and then I have three anthologies that I am part of.
- 19:44One of the anthologies, I am the Visionary. I didn't know when
- 19:51I did that one. That's when I realized how hard it was to give
- 19:56people to time stuff in right. I was like almost like really, I
- 20:07was like, come on, y'all, now I you have to do I'm
- 20:08just asking a simple question. One I'm simple. It was like, if
- 20:15you want me to do this, you want to do this? And I'm
- 20:17like, I'm sitting there like I don't have a few people, I said,
- 20:21the other people who got about more than six? Why, I bless
- 20:26you all, God bless you all, bag and and and and I said,
- 20:37who. So yeah, I have that out and we have a reference
- 20:42book. The reference book is not out yet because I really want to.
- 20:47I really want this book to really go far, not just Amazon. I
- 20:51wanted to go far, so I'm taking my time with the reference book.
- 20:55But I'm telling you those who who anthologies love y'all because they I don't know
- 21:03I'm gonna do this again, so I don't get somebody else to take over
- 21:06because I'm money. Now you hearing it, well, it can't be.
- 21:14But I tell you, having timelines and having deadlines and having procedures in place
- 21:19will alleviate a lot of that. And that's what I have to do on
- 21:22my projects. You know. I try to make sure that I keep things
- 21:26separated. People ask why I have so many emails. I have email.
- 21:30I have so many emails because I have a lot of projects that I do,
- 21:34have a lot of different things, so certain stuff need to go to
- 21:37certain places so I can keep up with it. So when I do certain
- 21:41anathologies or whatever, like the magazine magazine is the magazine email, you know,
- 21:45you have to like set up the different things and then you do your
- 21:52a deadline and make sure that you're sticking to the deadlines. And if people
- 21:56don't follow through with the deadlines, and sometimes you have to omit them.
- 22:00Unless when I turned on the process along this journey because UM, I think
- 22:06the most that I've had in a project UM was sixty one UM so far.
- 22:11But well, no, it was more than that because we had the
- 22:15sixty one that contributed them. It was eighty two. And that was the
- 22:21last book that we did UM, the Prey Book. We actually had eighty
- 22:23two people a part of the prep book because we had sixty one people that
- 22:27submitted three hundred and sixty five affirmations, and then we had twenty one people
- 22:33that actually wrote the content part where we wrote about the power of prayer and
- 22:41shared our journey with the one hundred and twenty one Days of Prayer. So
- 22:45yeah, and it could be rough because I've had projects where, you know,
- 22:51people have waited to the deadline and then they didn't make it, and
- 22:59they've been i'm gonna turn it in tomorrow, I'm gonna turn it in,
- 23:00i'm gonna get it to you over the weekend. I'm gonna working on over
- 23:03the weekend, and then Monday or Tuesday I come when it's dude, and
- 23:07then they'll say, well, I'm gonna have to back out. I'm gonna
- 23:08have to wait to the next project. Huh. Thank you for the donation.
- 23:14Right, the non funderable, non refundable donation. I don't understand like
- 23:22we and with me and and everybody that followed me a part of anything that
- 23:26I know. They know that my projects are not expensive. Um they are.
- 23:30I make them. Um, I priced them so that people can be
- 23:34a part. My whole objective is not to to um, pay no college
- 23:41fund, to pay no no car notes, to pay no house notes.
- 23:45My my objective is to be able to be an outlet for people to be
- 23:51able to share whatever it's pressing them, whatever it's bothering them. Like right
- 23:56right now we are doing I am looking for So if you're out there and
- 24:00you are a poet, we are looking for poets to be a part of
- 24:04our poetry book. And you just come and you just share two poemts.
- 24:12So I get all these people to come together so that they can share what's
- 24:18pressing them. So everybody may not be everybody may not want to do a
- 24:22whole book by themselves, So I give them the opportunity to, you know,
- 24:27just share a chapter or whatever ever. That that's the importance of doing
- 24:33an anthology, not trying to the payoff cars and pay college funds and buy
- 24:38houses and then taking people money. That's that's not that's not why I do
- 24:44it, um, And I thank you guys for sharing your voice, system
- 24:49your books and becoming an author. I want you to think about what was
- 24:56the hardest part, because I heard you say you was a procrastic procrast nata
- 25:00latagia and it took you almost what four years to get that book out?
- 25:04Like, really, I want to know what was the hardest thing for you?
- 25:10What was taking you so long to h the book out? What was
- 25:12pressing? What was you scared of relive in my story? Oh? I
- 25:18mean just having to think about all of all of everything that I've gone through,
- 25:23good, bad, ugly and indifferent and just having to write that down
- 25:30and look at it and see it for what it is. It was it
- 25:36became too much for me. And then some of it was just pure laziness.
- 25:40But now that you have this book out, how do you feel?
- 25:45How do you feel? I feel liberated? Um, This this book for
- 25:52me has um It's my truth. But in the same in the same breath,
- 25:59UM, a lot of things that was in the book people would have
- 26:03rather I not said, and I understand that, but you know, again,
- 26:08it's my truth. And my story to tell. It happened to me,
- 26:11So I'm gonna tell it. And you know, um, I was.
- 26:21I come from a family, my my biological family. I have three
- 26:26brothers and a sister and because of this book, none of them talk to
- 26:30me. Um. It took me from maybe two thousand and nineteen two now
- 26:42to be okay with it. Um. I used to feel a type of
- 26:48way, like, you know, it's my story. It happened to me.
- 26:52Why are you mad? You know if you feel some type of way
- 26:56writer rebuttal, dude, I mean you know there there there's ways of communication
- 27:02that didn't flow within my family. And I'm okay with it. Um,
- 27:07God told me, I'm fine, you know, you know, write your
- 27:10story, write the vision, make it plain. I did that and so
- 27:14UM, you know I do. I feel liberated. My my story was
- 27:19told. Um. This book has gone places that my feet may never make
- 27:26it to. And I'm humble. Um this book. There's a lady in
- 27:32Nigeria right now that has my book. I don't know this lady's from,
- 27:36you know, from the next person, but she saw my book. Um.
- 27:40I don't know if she heard about it or you know, but she
- 27:44found my book. She bought my book, and you know, I'm like
- 27:51Nigeria really but you know, nobody can determine how far you can go,
- 27:59but you nobody can slow you down. M It all starts and stops with
- 28:06self. I mean, it's good to have that push from other people,
- 28:11but if your mind and heart isn't set on getting it done, then it
- 28:17won't get done. And so you gotta get out of your own way.
- 28:19And if writing the book is is what you're supposed to do, write the
- 28:23book, get it done, get it published, get it out there,
- 28:26and get your your your story shared. So Apostle, what has this writing
- 28:37journey then like for you? And why was it important for you to be
- 28:41an author? Well? I wasn't really thinking about writing to somebody said,
- 28:49you're always writing everywhere you go. You have a notebook and a pencil.
- 28:53Okay, and listen, well, why don't you write about what? Don't
- 28:59you write a book? I said about what? Though? And they said,
- 29:03but what's you write a book about your mom? Since you one who
- 29:06raised your siblings? I said, okay, so let me write this book.
- 29:10Didn't know it was I was going to discover domestic violence, like because
- 29:15as a child when you grow up, you really it becomes the norm,
- 29:21and said, it's said to say that because but then when you look back
- 29:26and said, no, this is not normal. You know, it's not
- 29:30normal to watch your mom get beat but black ass and busted lips and bruises
- 29:34all over my b that's not normal. But when when you don't talk about
- 29:40it, it's the norm. And then when I started writing a book,
- 29:42I was like, wow, that's not normal, you know. So,
- 29:48but it was good to get this book out. And and sometimes said the
- 29:55news they read it, and one of them said, well, one part
- 30:00is not right. I said, well, I'm going by what my mother
- 30:03told me. Wherever my mama told me, I put that in the book.
- 30:07You know, if she told me a lot or where it is a
- 30:10lie. But what I saw in my ass, I saw the black ass,
- 30:17I saw these bruises. I saw my dad and my mom fight I
- 30:22did. I saw my answer. There's nothing. You can't take that away
- 30:26from me. Because all the time we was homeless, and she would run
- 30:33take us, run here and run there. We was always running running here,
- 30:37running there, running there for safety. That was my journey. So
- 30:42you can't take that away from me. And I just think that I had
- 30:47an opportunity to write this book so that the next generation. I'm trying to
- 30:52help somebody. And I always tell people, God give us red flags.
- 30:56Rather we want to accept the red flags, not before we get married.
- 31:02God already show you who the person is, that they are angry issues or
- 31:07they're no nor wherever's called pronounce it? Yeah, yeah, who what you
- 31:15just said? You know? Yeah? Yeah, y'all Dad, y'all got
- 31:26y'all know what I'm trying to say. Um so, but God will show
- 31:30you these people and one thing about women, and I have to sit and
- 31:33I tell women this one thing about women. We think we can change everybody.
- 31:40Oh, I'm just gonna be nice and sweet and I'm gonna do this,
- 31:44and I want to do that. And he's gonna love on me.
- 31:47He gonna just treat me right, Okay, So you're just going to ignore
- 31:52that he just slap you and you flew across the floor. Okay, but
- 31:56he I'm gonna be now the next time. The next time, you might
- 32:00not see a next time. So I always tell people, pay attention to
- 32:04the red flags, quit accepting anything, and quit settling. Sometimes we just
- 32:09settledn't think, and I went through a stage where I didn't think I deserved
- 32:15better, And a lot of women think they don't deserve better, so they
- 32:20take anything. You gotta be careful because, honey, I've seen some people.
- 32:27I have met a lot of women who have never got married. He
- 32:29said, I would rather be single than to be married and be beaten,
- 32:34mistreated top down and treated like nothing. If you're in a relationship and you
- 32:45have to walk on eggshells, Ron, especially if you're not married. Ron.
- 32:50And people said, oh my goodness, you're a preacher. You tell
- 32:54people to leave. Honey. I don't care if you're married ten, fifteen,
- 32:58fifty years, Honey in a duci relationship. Run and I said it
- 33:02on and don't look back. Don't you run forrest, Run and don't right.
- 33:12Yeah, So that's the one of the issues that I talked about my
- 33:16book because my mother grew up in an era where it didn't matter if you
- 33:21got beat you you do not get a divorce. There was no no compromise,
- 33:25nothing, You stay in it. And a lot of women are six
- 33:29feet under now because yeah, yeah, I'm telling you to run. I'm
- 33:36telling you to run, forrest. Run because I back a survivor nine years
- 33:43survivor, shot point blank range with a south out shotgun. I'm telling you
- 33:45to run, forrest, run and don't look back, because if you look
- 33:50back, you're gonna turn to the brain of South. So keep on running.
- 33:55Yeah, I'm telling you. So what do you have coming up next?
- 34:00Apostle? Uh? I still gotta get this reference book out, so
- 34:07I'm working on that and hopefully I'm shouting out there. Come on, y'all,
- 34:13those who do tracks for music, I'm ready to get this music on
- 34:15a road. You hear me, I'm ready. I'm hard. I'm ready
- 34:19to travel and get this music out. So a lot of people think I
- 34:22come on. They want me to come and sing, but I don't want
- 34:24to just single one song. I want to sing, well at least five
- 34:28of my songs before page. You know what I'm saying. So, um,
- 34:32those who like to play with tracks and background music, help as sister
- 34:37out here I am. I mean, help to keep putting it out there
- 34:44in the atmosphere. Somebody gonna help you one day that keep putting it out
- 34:47that keep putting it out there. Yeah, you gotta keep putting it out
