- 0:16Speaker 1: Recording by Nadeu Manx Fairy Tales by Sophia Morrison, Chapter
- 0:23Speaker 1: twenty five Tivel, Princess of the Ocean. In the old days, Klain,
- 0:31Speaker 1: the Smith of the Gods, was living in the Isle
- 0:33Speaker 1: of Man. It was the time when Conkubar was at
- 0:37Speaker 1: the court of the King of Ulster and had nothing
- 0:40Speaker 1: but the sword in his hand. He was a fine,
- 0:43Speaker 1: handsome young man, and he had made up his mind
- 0:46Speaker 1: to make himself a king. So he went one day
- 0:49Speaker 1: to the Druid of Clogger to ask him what he
- 0:53Speaker 1: had best do. Go thy way, said the Druid, to
- 0:58Speaker 1: the Isle of Man. There thou wilt find the great
- 1:01Speaker 1: smith Kline. Get him to make thee a sword and
- 1:05Speaker 1: a spear and a shield, and with these thou shalt
- 1:09Speaker 1: win the kingdom of Ulster. Conkubar went away and hired
- 1:14Speaker 1: a boat and put out to sea. He landed in
- 1:17Speaker 1: Man and made straight for Klaine's smithy. It was night
- 1:21Speaker 1: when he got there, and the red glow of the
- 1:24Speaker 1: furnace shone out into the dark. He could hear from
- 1:28Speaker 1: inside the smithy the roar of the bellows and the
- 1:31Speaker 1: clanging of the hammer on the anvil. When he came near,
- 1:36Speaker 1: a great dog as large as a calf began to
- 1:39Speaker 1: bay and to growl like thunder, and brought his master out.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Who art thou, young man, said he o Kulaine, cried Conkubar,
- 1:50Speaker 1: It is from the Druid of Clogherd that I come.
- 1:53Speaker 1: And he bade me ask THEE to make me a
- 1:55Speaker 1: sword and a spear and a shield. For only weapons
- 2:00Speaker 1: of thy making can I win the kingdom of Ulster.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Coolaine's face grew black at first, but after he had
- 2:08Speaker 1: gazed for a while at Conkubar, he saw that he
- 2:11Speaker 1: had the look about him of one who would go far,
- 2:14Speaker 1: and he said it shall be done for THEE, that
- 2:18Speaker 1: thou must wait, for the work is long. So Coolaine
- 2:23Speaker 1: began to make the weapons, and Conkubar waited in the island.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Early one brave morning in May, when the sun had
- 2:31Speaker 1: just risen over Kronkieyila, he was walking on the strand,
- 2:36Speaker 1: wondering to himself how much longer Kolaine would be making
- 2:40Speaker 1: his weapons, and thinking it was full time for him
- 2:44Speaker 1: to return. The tide was going out and the sun
- 2:48Speaker 1: was shining on the wet sand. Suddenly he saw something
- 2:53Speaker 1: flashing at the edge of the waves a few paces
- 2:56Speaker 1: from him. He ran up to it, and behold it
- 2:59Speaker 1: was was the most beautiful woman he had ever put
- 3:02Speaker 1: sight on. Fast asleep. Her hair was golden like the
- 3:07Speaker 1: gorse in bloom, her skin whiter than the foam of
- 3:11Speaker 1: the sea, her lips red as the coral, and her
- 3:14Speaker 1: cheeks rosy like the little clouds that were flying before
- 3:18Speaker 1: the face of the rising sun. The fringe of her
- 3:22Speaker 1: dress of many colored seaweeds, rose and fell with the
- 3:25Speaker 1: ebb and flow of the waves. Pearls gleamed on her
- 3:29Speaker 1: neck and arms. Concubar stood and looked on her. He
- 3:34Speaker 1: knew that she was a mermaid, and that as soon
- 3:37Speaker 1: as she woke, she would slip back into the ocean
- 3:40Speaker 1: and be lost to him. So he bound her fast
- 3:43Speaker 1: with his girdle. Then she awoke and opened her eyes,
- 3:49Speaker 1: which were blue as the sea, And when she saw
- 3:52Speaker 1: that she was bound, she cried out with terror. Loose
- 3:57Speaker 1: me man, loose me. Concubar did not answer, so she
- 4:01Speaker 1: said again, loose me, I beg THEE, in a voice
- 4:05Speaker 1: as sweet as the music of haw More, the fairy fiddler.
- 4:10Speaker 1: By this time Concubar was feeling that he would give
- 4:13Speaker 1: all he had to keep her. He answered, trembling, woman,
- 4:19Speaker 1: my heart, who art thou? I am Tivil, Princess of
- 4:25Speaker 1: the Ocean, said she set me free, I pray thee.
- 4:31Speaker 1: But if I set THEE free, said Concubar, thou wilt
- 4:35Speaker 1: leave me. I cannot stay with thee. Concubar, she cried,
- 4:40Speaker 1: set me free, and I will give THEE a precious gift.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I will loose thee, answered Concubar. It is not for
- 4:48Speaker 1: the gift, but because I cannot resist THEE. He unfastened
- 4:53Speaker 1: the girdle from her, and she said, my gift to
- 4:56Speaker 1: THEE is this. Go now to Kolaine, who is making
- 5:00Speaker 1: thy shield, and tell him that Tevil, Princess of the Ocean,
- 5:05Speaker 1: bids him to put her figure on the shield and
- 5:08Speaker 1: round it to grave her name. Then thou shalt wear
- 5:12Speaker 1: it always in battle. And when thou shalt look on
- 5:15Speaker 1: my face and call my name, thy enemy's strength shall
- 5:19Speaker 1: go from them, and shall come into thee and thy men.
- 5:23Speaker 1: When she had said this, she waved her white arm
- 5:26Speaker 1: to Concubar and plunged into the waves. He looked sadly
- 5:32Speaker 1: for a long time at the spot where she had disappeared,
- 5:36Speaker 1: and then walked slowly to the forge of Coolaine and
- 5:40Speaker 1: gave him the message. Koulaine finished the mighty shield, as
- 5:45Speaker 1: the princess had said, and forged also for Concubar a
- 5:49Speaker 1: golden hilted magic sword and a spear set with precious stones.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Then Concubar and his crimson mantle and white gold embroidered tunic,
- 6:01Speaker 1: and armed with his great shield and his mighty weapons,
- 6:06Speaker 1: went back to Ireland. All that the Princess of the
- 6:10Speaker 1: Ocean had said came true. When he went into battle,
- 6:15Speaker 1: he looked at the beautiful face in his shield and
- 6:18Speaker 1: cried helped evel. Then he felt strength come into him,
- 6:23Speaker 1: like the strength of a giant, and he cut his
- 6:26Speaker 1: enemies down like grass. Before long he was famous all
- 6:30Speaker 1: over Ireland for his great deeds, and in the end
- 6:34Speaker 1: he became King of Ulster. Then he invited Kulaine to
- 6:40Speaker 1: come and live in his kingdom, and gave him the
- 6:43Speaker 1: plain of Murthami to dwell in, but he never again
- 6:47Speaker 1: saw the lovely mermaid end of Chapter twenty five.
