- 0:00Speaker 1: Ten.
- 0:00Speaker 2: Now four back to the basics and healthcare with Balance
- 0:02Speaker 2: Life Caropractic. We're here with doctor Harley. Hello, doctor Harley,
- 0:05Speaker 2: how are you? Hey, John, I'm doing great and you
- 0:07Speaker 2: I'm fantastic. And now it feels like summer, because you know,
- 0:10Speaker 2: we're beyond Memorial Day and all of a sudden it's
- 0:12Speaker 2: bright and sunny. And this is a time when people
- 0:15Speaker 2: need to make sure that they get enough fluid, because
- 0:18Speaker 2: if you're out in the sun doing stuff, it's pretty
- 0:20Speaker 2: easy to put yourself in a bad spot without it,
- 0:22Speaker 2: right right.
- 0:23Speaker 1: I know we talk about this, you know periodically, you
- 0:25Speaker 1: talked about hydration and the amount of water we should
- 0:27Speaker 1: be drinking. I figured, you know, since we're looking at
- 0:29Speaker 1: a whole week of like eighty degrees, it would be
- 0:31Speaker 1: good to remind people again that they need to be
- 0:33Speaker 1: drinking more water, especially now it is getting hotter.
- 0:36Speaker 2: So what if I'm drinking something that has water in it,
- 0:38Speaker 2: Like I'm drinking coffee that's got water, I'm drinking beer
- 0:41Speaker 2: that's got water, I'm drinking gatorade that has water.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Does that count well? Coffee and beer and tea or
- 0:46Speaker 1: any to have alcoholic beverage, they are actually going to
- 0:48Speaker 1: be dehydrating. So they may have water in them, but
- 0:52Speaker 1: because of all the other stuff, and they actually are dehydrating.
- 0:55Speaker 2: So that that doesn't help on the hydration side.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Exactly times is recommended for every alcoholic drink you drink,
- 1:02Speaker 1: you should drink water in between each drink to help
- 1:06Speaker 1: stay more hydrated. You always wake up the morning after
- 1:09Speaker 1: a night out and you feel horrible, you have a
- 1:11Speaker 1: major hangover. Well, you probably didn't drink enough water the
- 1:14Speaker 1: night before while you were drinking your alcoholic beverages.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Very nice, So the best way to drink water is
- 1:19Speaker 2: it just straight water? Or would it be okay if
- 1:22Speaker 2: I add some flavoring to it? So I like flavoring
- 1:24Speaker 2: in my water. Is that kind of ruined things too?
- 1:25Speaker 1: They're actually starting to see now it's more adding a
- 1:27Speaker 1: little bit of like sea salt to your water. Because
- 1:30Speaker 1: of it, it's an electrolyte, and drinking just plain water
- 1:34Speaker 1: might not be quite enough to hydrate you.
- 1:36Speaker 2: So a little bit of sea salt not enough that
- 1:39Speaker 2: it tastes all salty.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Though, right right, Yeah, you're not drinking like ocean salty water.
- 1:43Speaker 2: But I tried, because I tried to put some salt
- 1:46Speaker 2: and at first, I put it in the water, and
- 1:47Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm ruining my water. And I was like,
- 1:49Speaker 2: I wonder if I put it in my coffee and
- 1:50Speaker 2: I just ruined my coffee.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I mean, I know some people make coffee with putting
- 1:53Speaker 1: a little bit of salt in the grounds because it
- 1:55Speaker 1: helps cut some of the acidity or something. I know
- 1:57Speaker 1: my husband does that sometimes well, and I even try.
- 2:00Speaker 2: I was like, well, maybe if I put it in tea,
- 2:01Speaker 2: and that was actually the best because then it almost
- 2:04Speaker 2: tasted like a soup broth. So interesting a little bit.
- 2:07Speaker 2: I might be using way too much.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Salt potentially, I mean, we eat ten as American seat
- 2:11Speaker 1: way too much salt. But if you're outside and you're
- 2:15Speaker 1: working and you're sweating a lot, that's you know, we
- 2:18Speaker 1: talk about gatorades and power raids and smart waters, oh
- 2:22Speaker 1: and the liquid IV.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's it.
- 2:24Speaker 1: You know, so adding those if you're being very active
- 2:27Speaker 1: and sweating a lot. Because when we sweat, we lose
- 2:29Speaker 1: a lot of electrolyte salts and all of that kind
- 2:31Speaker 1: of stuff. So if you're just drinking water, you're not
- 2:34Speaker 1: replacing the salt loss either. So that's where those electrolyte
- 2:38Speaker 1: drinks are great to help with hydrating you.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Faster, very very nice. But the most important thing is
- 2:44Speaker 2: make sure you get water. And then how much water
- 2:47Speaker 2: is enough water? Does it depend on every person?
- 2:50Speaker 1: Well, the minimum standard usually sixty four fluid ounces or
- 2:53Speaker 1: eight eight ounce glasses of water, and for a lot
- 2:56Speaker 1: of people that's not enough because our body weights, you know,
- 2:59Speaker 1: we're a little bit big people. So typically they say
- 3:02Speaker 1: about half your body weight and ounces of water a day.
- 3:04Speaker 2: All right, So if if somebody drinks sixty four ounces,
- 3:09Speaker 2: or if they need more than that, does it matter
- 3:11Speaker 2: if I drink that all at once or should I
- 3:14Speaker 2: break it into two or three settings or eight settings?
- 3:16Speaker 2: Or what's the Is there a kind of a rule
- 3:18Speaker 2: of thumb on that.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I don't know there's a specific rule of thumb. But
- 3:21Speaker 1: if you drink all of it at one time, you're
- 3:23Speaker 1: actually going to go the opposite of dehydration, it's hyper hydration,
- 3:27Speaker 1: which can be just as bad getting because the electrolyte
- 3:30Speaker 1: balance gets messed up.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Water leaking out your ears.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Not quite that bad, but so you know, balancing your
- 3:37Speaker 1: water throughout the day, and if you're being fairly active,
- 3:40Speaker 1: drinking more at that point and after the activity.
- 3:43Speaker 2: And something that I see and you've got one here,
- 3:45Speaker 2: you got a big Balance Life chiropractic mug. But I
- 3:48Speaker 2: see people that have these, like the Stanley cups and
- 3:50Speaker 2: they're not all that brand. But that was for whatever reason,
- 3:53Speaker 2: a couple of years ago, it was like all the rage.
- 3:55Speaker 2: But I see people it seems like these cups are
- 3:57Speaker 2: getting bigger and bigger. And my daughter and my wife
- 3:59Speaker 2: both have cups that I don't know how much fits
- 4:01Speaker 2: in the cup, but it's way too much. And then
- 4:03Speaker 2: I don't feel like they ever drink anything out.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Of that cup. Well, I mean, it's cool to see
- 4:07Speaker 1: that people are carrying water more. We're being more conscious
- 4:10Speaker 1: of our hydration levels. You know, think of like growing up,
- 4:13Speaker 1: you drink like one sip of water from the water fountain.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Out of the hose. What are you talking about.
- 4:18Speaker 1: My generation oppose at school?
- 4:20Speaker 2: Noah, we did. I grew up in here on. We
- 4:22Speaker 2: did all kinds of weird stuff. Drink out of the
- 4:25Speaker 2: mop bucket if I had to.
- 4:27Speaker 1: It's cool that we're being more conscious of our hydration levels.
- 4:30Speaker 1: And I mean it's one people need to drink the
- 4:33Speaker 1: water if they have it with them. A lot of
- 4:35Speaker 1: people just carry around their water bottle. That's a thing.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Don't drink from it.
- 4:38Speaker 2: My daughter was riding with me, we were like doing
- 4:40Speaker 2: some training, and she would bring out this gigantic, ridiculous
- 4:43Speaker 2: clown cup and I never saw her drink out of it.
- 4:46Speaker 2: I'm like, why do you bring Is it like a
- 4:47Speaker 2: social like an emotional support cup? But she said she
- 4:51Speaker 2: drinks out of it. Never. Never, I've never witnessed it happen.
- 4:54Speaker 2: I'm sure she does, but just when I'm not looking.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Yeah. So, proper hydration is important for life. It's important
- 5:01Speaker 1: for the healing process. We talk a lot about that
- 5:03Speaker 1: with our patients after they get adjusted, drinking lots and
- 5:06Speaker 1: lots of water to help flush things out of our body,
- 5:09Speaker 1: especially if you haven't been adjusted or you hear that
- 5:11Speaker 1: a lot with like massage therapy, proper hydration really helps
- 5:15Speaker 1: hydrate the tissues, helping with the healing process well.
- 5:17Speaker 2: And with the warm weather rolling in, we'll be sweating more,
- 5:20Speaker 2: so you want to make sure you're replacing that water
- 5:22Speaker 2: and hydration matters a lot. If somebody listening is going, hey,
- 5:24Speaker 2: I'd like to reach out to balance life. Chiropractic to
- 5:27Speaker 2: kind of add chiropractic to my life along with my hydration.
