Latest / The Scene Projects / Avery Klima's Journey: Navigating Type One Diabetes and Community Support
Transcript
- 0:00Out tonight.
- 0:00We are so grateful.
- 0:02It's it's not like a surface level thank you.
- 0:05It's a it's a thank you from the bottom of our heart.
- 0:10So Avery was you wanna say thank you?
- 0:16So Avery was diagnosed type one diabetes just about three months ago.
- 0:22And we didn't know she was sick.
- 0:25It happened to be where she had got her two year old vaccines.
- 0:30And after that, she was very sickly.
- 0:33She was lethargic.
- 0:34She wouldn't walk.
- 0:36She wouldn't talk.
- 0:37All she wanted to do is just sleep on the couch.
- 0:40And it took three doctors to finally diagnose her type one diabetic.
- 0:47Can you hold her?
- 0:48Thank you.
- 0:50So when we heard that she was type one, we didn't know anything about it.
- 0:53In fact, when the doctors came in and told me, my first response was, oh my gosh, is she
- 0:58eating too much sugar?
- 1:01And that is such a common misconception.
- 1:04But what it means to type one versus type two is type one, she was born with a pancreas that
- 1:10just does not function.
- 1:12So when she was born, basically, was born with a dead pancreas, a dead organ.
- 1:18So it doesn't make insulin.
- 1:20And so when she was first fresh out of the hospital, we spent four days in the intensive
- 1:27care unit.
- 1:29She was hours away from a diabetic coma.
- 1:32And fresh out of the hospital, we learned that if she has any more than three carbs ever, she
- 1:38needs insulin.
- 1:40So her day today was eight to 10 manual shots of insulin.
- 1:46And that's painful for anyone.
- 1:48I'm sure adults don't like shots.
- 1:51Imagine doing that to a two year old, eights ten times a day.
- 1:54And so we were lucky enough to get her on the pump now.
- 1:59So it's all manual, and we don't have to check her blood sugar around the clock because we can
- 2:04just look at a phone, and that is such a blessing.
- 2:07But that pump was $9,000 That's crazy.
- 2:12But what price do you pay to keep your daughter alive?
- 2:16Right?
- 2:17Oh, she loves she loves the spotlight.
- 2:20She is enjoying this a whole lot, ain't she?
- 2:22This is all for you, sweetheart.
- 2:27That's right.
- 2:28Shake your booty.
- 2:30So since being diagnosed, as you can see, she's she's so much better.
- 2:37The insulin helps her to be a better a better baby.
- 2:41And she's happier, and she's playful, and she takes it all in stride.
- 2:46Her her medical care is 247.
- 2:48Yeah.
- 2:50Can you say thank you?
- 2:57Nope.
- 2:59Her medical care is 247 and so what what we hope to accomplish tonight is not only to help
- 3:08Avery but to help other families in the Black Hills who have kids going through this disease.
- 3:15We just granted a family a $400 check right before Christmas to help with Christmas.
- 3:21They have two girls under the age of six with type one diabetes.
- 3:26So their medical bills are double what ours are, and I I can't imagine how they get through
- 3:31life.
- 3:32And our our number one goal is to one day raise enough awareness and raise enough money to
- 3:38where we can have a storage shed full of medical supplies that we can provide to people
- 3:45for free.
- 3:46Because you should never put a price tag on your baby's health.
- 3:50And, so that's that's why we do what we do.
- 3:53I I can't thank you enough and the sponsors enough for you guys coming out.
- 3:58He came out from Sioux Falls.
- 4:01So thank you so much guys, everybody that's here, everybody that's participating.
- 4:08A million thank yous.
- 4:10You wanna say something?
- 4:12I don't have a lot to say, but you know, our family was perfect, I thought, and everything
- 4:19was perfect.
- 4:20And then you just never know when something like this is gonna happen.
- 4:24We had really high deductible insurance because we thought, well, she's two.
- 4:27She's healthy.
- 4:28She's why why get pay all that money for insurance?
- 4:31And then boom, two years old, the Haley was telling you about the doctors.
- 4:38You know, we went into the first doctor because she was peeing a lot.
- 4:42Big thing, people need to pay attention to the symptoms of type one diabetes.
- 4:48She was peeing and peeing and drinking and drinking and peeing.
- 4:51And we went into the first doctor and they said, well, stop giving her so much to drink.
- 4:56And I said, well, when we do that, she starts crying and crying.
- 5:00And they said, well, just let her cry it out and send us home.
- 5:03And
- 5:08and what you guys were already helping families.
- 5:12You already had a foundation.
- 5:14Already doing a lot of those things.
- 5:15So I'm sure as Just like that.
- 5:18Yeah.
- 5:19So as you're going through all of this, I'm sure that your mind immediately went beyond
- 5:23yourself and went, oh my god, all of these how many more families are there out there that are
- 5:27dealing with all of these same struggles that we're dealing with, you know?
- 5:31And it's not just the $9,000 pump.
- 5:33It's all the extra medical supplies and things that, you know, you've mentioned to me that,
- 5:38you know, sometimes because of human error, right, somebody forgets to order this or that,
- 5:42and now you're going without or you're scrambling to find these supplies.
- 5:45Those are the kind of things that we're trying to purchase and that, you know, filling the
- 5:48storage shed with those machines so that nobody's ever having to scramble to try and
- 5:53find the things that they need every day.
- 5:55You're discovering more and more about the disease and about, you know, what it takes to
- 6:01and what's necessary on a day to day basis.
- 6:03We
- 6:05were in a position where her doctors literally forgot to order her medical supplies.
- 6:10She found that switch.
- 6:13Hello?
- 6:15So they forgot to order her medical supplies, and they were just like, you know, we dropped
- 6:20the ball.
- 6:21Like, sorry.
- 6:22And it was an injection port, so instead of the needle going directly into her skin, it would
- 6:28go into, like, a tube in her arm.
- 6:30It took the pain away.
- 6:32And they didn't order that.
- 6:34Do you wanna hold her for a second?
- 6:36Thank you.
- 6:36They so they didn't order that.
- 6:39And I mean, should have and they didn't and they're like, you know, sorry.
- 6:43Sorry.
- 6:44We dropped the ball.
- 6:45So we had to get on Facebook and beg strangers and be like, does anybody have a type one
- 6:50diabetic injection port?
- 6:52And by the grace of God, we found one.
- 6:53We found a guy who his daughter has had diabetes since she was 15 old.
- 6:59And he was like, take them.
- 7:01Take them.
- 7:01We don't need them.
- 7:02She's 18.
- 7:03She just went off to college.
- 7:04Like, you know, we're like, what do we owe you?
- 7:06These are expensive.
- 7:07And he's like, no.
- 7:08You don't owe me anything.
- 7:09And that's when we thought, you know what?
- 7:11We wanna do this for other families in our position too.
- 7:14We want to help more kids beyond Avery.
- 7:19So this is much bigger than this.
- 7:21Can we get a round of applause for Hailey and Avery, our star of the show.
- 7:25Ryan's up here too.
- 7:27The cleanup family.
- 7:28Thank you so much.
- 7:34Really?
- 7:35So Gordie Pratt, our good friend, and he would have been here if not for being type one
- 7:41diabetic as well and dying from the disease as So it affects us all.
- 7:47It affects all of us here.
- 7:49I'm sure if you go through your family and you go through your friends' contact list, you have
- 7:53people in your close circle that are affected by this disease.
- 7:58I didn't know a lot about it until kind of meeting Haley and starting to, put this whole
- 8:04thing together.
- 8:05But realizing how many people in our community are dealing with the same exact thing that
- 8:10Haley and Ryan and Avery are going to go through.
- 8:13This is her whole life now, right?
- 8:14From two years old on, she's always going to have this disease that follows her, right?
- 8:19So we want to bring, first of all, awareness, Just even a small room of people, look at all
- 8:24these beautiful faces out here, Telling you all about this disease and what you can do, and
- 8:29then being that light, that beacon, that people who are either suffering through this or want
- 8:36to help, we are figuring out how we can help our community, right?
- 8:41So we wanna just be to to be that light and to build that community around these families.
- 8:46So thank you all so much for being here.
- 8:48Thank you, Haley, for coming up and explaining what I couldn't.
- 8:51Make sure you're checking out the silent auction.
- 8:53We have a cash donation tip jar up here.
- 8:55This is all for Avery and the family.
- 8:58And and for all the good that we're gonna do past this, guys.
- 9:00This is just the beginning, and, we hope to make this a lifelong pursuit of helping other
- 9:05families.
- 9:05So, once again, give a big hand for Avery and Haley and Ryan.
