Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hello, Welcome to Inside the Tape with Greg Cosell on
- 0:12Speaker 1: Inside the Birds. I'm Jeff Mosher and I'm joined as
- 0:15Speaker 1: always by Greg Cosell to break down the tape of
- 0:19Speaker 1: an Eagles game. And this is a Black Friday loss
- 0:21Speaker 1: for the Eagles to the Bears. And Greg, it was
- 0:25Speaker 1: an ugly loss on both ends. We have picked on
- 0:28Speaker 1: the offense quite a bit. We're gonna pick on the
- 0:30Speaker 1: offense and the defense in this game because it wasn't
- 0:33Speaker 1: very good.
- 0:34Speaker 2: On either side. But we will start first with.
- 0:37Speaker 1: The defense and get into the offense on the next episode.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Of course, the Eagles lost twenty four to fifteen, and Greg,
- 0:44Speaker 1: they got run over in a way we have not
- 0:46Speaker 1: seen the Eagles get run over in quite a while.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Yeah, that is very true. You know, I imagine people
- 0:54Speaker 3: listening to us who are obviously Eagles fans. I would
- 0:57Speaker 3: assume most probably not surprised at the offensive performance because
- 1:03Speaker 3: it's been somewhat similar off season long. But the defensive performance,
- 1:08Speaker 3: particularly the run game, it's one thing I think they
- 1:11Speaker 3: expect at times with the secondary perhaps that that teams
- 1:15Speaker 3: can throw at times, but the way they were run
- 1:20Speaker 3: on with what forty for two fifty five by the
- 1:23Speaker 3: two backs combined. Yeah, that was not just the two
- 1:28Speaker 3: fifty five, but the fact that they were able to
- 1:30Speaker 3: run forty times, because you can only run forty times
- 1:33Speaker 3: if you're having great success. You don't run forty times
- 1:36Speaker 3: if you're getting seventy yards. So you know, it was
- 1:41Speaker 3: the success that allowed the Bears to run the ball
- 1:45Speaker 3: as much as they did. You know, But what was
- 1:47Speaker 3: so interesting about the game is, yes, you're watching the
- 1:51Speaker 3: game on TV. You know that the Eagles offense in
- 1:53Speaker 3: the first half only ran seventeen plays, which is unheard
- 1:56Speaker 3: of in an NFL game. But all of a sudden,
- 1:58Speaker 3: they throw a touchdown to AJ Brown ten nine in
- 2:00Speaker 3: the third quarter, and you're probably thinking, in many ways,
- 2:03Speaker 3: this is not unlike a lot of Eagles games that
- 2:07Speaker 3: you probably think, Okay, you know, to use the cliche,
- 2:10Speaker 3: but I'm sure a lot of people believe it. They're
- 2:12Speaker 3: a championship type team and they're gonna find a way
- 2:15Speaker 3: to win. It's ten to nine in the third quarter,
- 2:17Speaker 3: and it's you know, it seems like a normal game
- 2:20Speaker 3: for the Eagles.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Right right, I mean right, yeah, you're something you put
- 2:27Speaker 1: in your notes though about the run defense and We'll
- 2:29Speaker 1: get into the schematics of it, but I want to
- 2:31Speaker 1: take a big picture look because you put something in
- 2:34Speaker 1: your notes that was consistent with something I wrote about
- 2:36Speaker 1: Monday for Billy Voice. And sometimes when you have maybe
- 2:40Speaker 1: too much time to think, you start going into the
- 2:42Speaker 1: stats and going into the right in the extra level thinking.
- 2:45Speaker 1: And I thought, you know this, this game came on
- 2:48Speaker 1: the heels of them getting kind of run over by
- 2:50Speaker 1: the Cowboys too. And then I went and looked at
- 2:53Speaker 1: how many snaps the defense had played through twelve weeks
- 2:57Speaker 1: this year compared to last year, and I found that
- 3:01Speaker 1: it was about sixty nine defensive snaps more, which per
- 3:04Speaker 1: after twelve weeks, it's like six more a game. We
- 3:07Speaker 1: can argue whether that's a lot or not over twelve weeks,
- 3:10Speaker 1: but the biggest thing is that the snap differential. For
- 3:14Speaker 1: guys like Jordan Davis and Moro Jomo, they're playing almost
- 3:19Speaker 1: twice the percentage of snaps per game than they did
- 3:22Speaker 1: last year, which is a lot. Last year there were
- 3:25Speaker 1: four guys on the interior. You know, it was Davis,
- 3:28Speaker 1: it was Carter, it was a Jomo, Milton Williams. And
- 3:31Speaker 1: this year Byron Young has really not been a part
- 3:34Speaker 1: of it. You had to be in this game. But
- 3:36Speaker 1: they've really relied on three guys and two of them
- 3:39Speaker 1: are playing a ton of snaps, and I wondered, I
- 3:41Speaker 1: think the same thing you did, is is that taking
- 3:44Speaker 1: a toll on their just overall stamina as the season
- 3:48Speaker 1: goes on.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Yeah, And of course there's no way to know how
- 3:51Speaker 3: they feel. All you can do is watch the tape
- 3:54Speaker 3: and draw on inference, which is you know, obviously I
- 3:57Speaker 3: made that point with Jordan Davis that he's played basically
- 4:00Speaker 3: five hundred snaps this year, sixty two percent of the snaps,
- 4:04Speaker 3: and look, in an ideal world, that's probably what they
- 4:06Speaker 3: wanted when they drafted them, because they traded up to
- 4:09Speaker 3: get him with the thirteenth pick in the draft. So
- 4:11Speaker 3: you're not doing that to have a guy played twenty
- 4:13Speaker 3: five percent of the snaps, certainly in his fourth season.
- 4:16Speaker 3: But you know, just the style of player that he is,
- 4:20Speaker 3: you start to see him at times, you know, straighten
- 4:23Speaker 3: up a little bit, which has always been a little
- 4:24Speaker 3: bit of an issue, not play with the same need
- 4:27Speaker 3: bend and leverage that's required, which he's played, by the way,
- 4:30Speaker 3: this year for the most part pretty well. I mean
- 4:33Speaker 3: in the in run defense, he's been a real force.
- 4:36Speaker 3: But he played that many snaps and you know, again
- 4:40Speaker 3: it's it's easy to sit here now in retrospect with
- 4:44Speaker 3: access to some results and say, gee, they missed Milton Williams.
- 4:47Speaker 3: But we knew they missed Milton Williams when he signed
- 4:49Speaker 3: with the Patriots. That wasn't you know, that wasn't a
- 4:52Speaker 3: bold statement to say, gee, they're missing Milton Williams. Now.
- 4:55Speaker 3: But you're right, you know, Brian Young, you know, or
- 4:58Speaker 3: Brian Young excuse me, Iron Young, excuse me. Yeah, I
- 5:02Speaker 3: was thinking of the Hall of Famer with the Niners.
- 5:04Speaker 3: I don't know why Byron Young. You know, I thought
- 5:07Speaker 3: he'd end up playing more snaps. There were some games
- 5:09Speaker 3: he did this game he ended up doing that. But
- 5:12Speaker 3: for the most part this season, he really hasn't been
- 5:15Speaker 3: a meaningful part of the Detackle rotation.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Yep.
- 5:18Speaker 1: And you wonder, and to add to that, you know Vic,
- 5:21Speaker 1: We know Vic is not a big rotation guy. He
- 5:23Speaker 1: doesn't even a guy like Josh Uce. For the first
- 5:25Speaker 1: six or seven weeks, we were, you know, mentioning a
- 5:29Speaker 1: good pressure, but you know, they get Jalen Phillips and
- 5:31Speaker 1: it's basically Phillips Hunt and Nolan Smith. Now yeah, yeah,
- 5:37Speaker 1: so and even now the rotation at linebacker may be
- 5:40Speaker 1: going away because Johad Campbell.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Did not play a snap on defense.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Right, So it just makes you wonder if it's the
- 5:48Speaker 1: fact that the defense is on the field a lot,
- 5:50Speaker 1: or the less rotation we've seen in the past, or
- 5:55Speaker 1: or a mixture of both. What did the tape show
- 5:57Speaker 1: specifically about the front level in run defense, those guys
- 6:02Speaker 1: we talked about and the linebackers.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Well, I would say, and I put this in my notes,
- 6:06Speaker 3: so you saw it, and and I don't know if
- 6:08Speaker 3: it's you know, you noticed it. I remember having a
- 6:10Speaker 3: conversation with a coach I'm going back twenty years, I
- 6:15Speaker 3: maybe even going back thirty years when the the Mike
- 6:20Speaker 3: Shanahan Broncos were running outside zone seemingly on every single play,
- 6:25Speaker 3: you know, with Terrell Davis for those four years. Yeah,
- 6:28Speaker 3: And I remember speaking to a coach in the same division,
- 6:31Speaker 3: a defensive coordinator, saying that you cannot play the outside
- 6:35Speaker 3: zone run game. Laterally, and I'm watching the Eagles tape
- 6:40Speaker 3: and you know, obviously not after two plays, but after
- 6:43Speaker 3: you see enough plays I'm just saying to myself that
- 6:46Speaker 3: conversation just kept popping into my head. You cannot play
- 6:51Speaker 3: the outside zone run game laterally and the d tackles,
- 6:54Speaker 3: And it was true with Jalen Carter as well as
- 6:57Speaker 3: a Joemo for the most part, they there was no
- 7:00Speaker 3: vertical knock back at all. Everybody was playing laterally and
- 7:05Speaker 3: when you played the outside zone run game laterally, you
- 7:08Speaker 3: play right into their hands, Jeff, because the whole premise
- 7:11Speaker 3: of outside zone and I've learned this over the years,
- 7:14Speaker 3: you know, from talking to many coaches. It's very simple,
- 7:18Speaker 3: is you stretched the front side and you cut off
- 7:21Speaker 3: the backside that's outside zone, and then the back just
- 7:24Speaker 3: picks whatever hole shows up. And they were playing laterally,
- 7:31Speaker 3: and you can't play outside zone laterally absolutely.
- 7:34Speaker 1: And you know what, Greg I credit entered a checko
- 7:37Speaker 1: for pointing this out to me that it reminded me already.
- 7:40Speaker 1: I was thinking about how it reminded me a little
- 7:42Speaker 1: bit of the Atlanta game last year. Atlanta really had
- 7:45Speaker 1: a good run game on the same outside zone concepts. Well,
- 7:48Speaker 1: the center for the Falcons last year was Dolman and
- 7:51Speaker 1: he is the center now right for the Bears. And
- 7:55Speaker 1: you know, is it possibly, he said, hey, we had
- 7:57Speaker 1: success last year.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Possible, very possible. You know, you have a coach to
- 8:01Speaker 2: share the wisdom.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Yeah, but you know, so there was no vertical knock
- 8:05Speaker 3: back at all. And the other issue that that starts
- 8:10Speaker 3: to show up is then you start to play single
- 8:12Speaker 3: high because you need to get someone else involved in
- 8:15Speaker 3: the run game, you need to bring down someone, and
- 8:17Speaker 3: then you get caught in having to change strength when
- 8:21Speaker 3: there's motion. And there was no better example, not the
- 8:25Speaker 3: only example, but no better example than on the Nungui
- 8:28Speaker 3: thirty one yarder where they motion and I know I
- 8:32Speaker 3: put that play in my notes and where they and
- 8:35Speaker 3: I'm going to just go, you know, I know, if you're.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Going to show that, I'm going to take a look
- 8:38Speaker 2: at that one.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Okay, we'll take a look at that. So we'll save
- 8:41Speaker 3: that for you know, when we go over it. But
- 8:44Speaker 3: the point is is that you end up when there's
- 8:47Speaker 3: motion and the number of receivers changes from one side
- 8:51Speaker 3: to another, because now you have a pass game element,
- 8:54Speaker 3: not just a run game element. But when that happens,
- 8:57Speaker 3: there's a change of strength in the offensive formation. So
- 9:00Speaker 3: if you're playing single high, there becomes a change of
- 9:03Speaker 3: strength in your defense, which isn't the case if you're
- 9:06Speaker 3: playing with a quarter shell, because there's no imbalance in
- 9:10Speaker 3: your coverage when you're in a quarters shell.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Right, So would you say the tape showed more guys
- 9:17Speaker 1: out of gaps because of motion and scheme or were
- 9:21Speaker 1: guys getting blown off the ball or moving laterally and
- 9:26Speaker 1: getting out of their gaps more and more and.
- 9:27Speaker 3: More the lateral and so what happened is is guys
- 9:31Speaker 3: were being pushed out of their gaps, not necessarily because
- 9:34Speaker 3: they were being physically handled in the way you think
- 9:37Speaker 3: of being physically handled, but just pushed out because they
- 9:40Speaker 3: were just moving with the flow.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Right.
- 9:43Speaker 3: So therefore they just you know, it's the old expression,
- 9:46Speaker 3: take them where they're going anyway, you know. So so
- 9:51Speaker 3: there were times where Carter or a Joemo, it wasn't
- 9:53Speaker 3: as if they were just getting like shoved and just
- 9:55Speaker 3: beaten physically, oh my god, you know, but they just
- 9:58Speaker 3: were just flowing with the play, right, and so therefore
- 10:01Speaker 3: the front side was just being stretched. It was it,
- 10:04Speaker 3: you know, it made it look like it was practice sometimes.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Yeah. And then the cutback and then the cutbacks they
- 10:10Speaker 2: went and killed them.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think poor would you say poor tackling
- 10:13Speaker 1: in the second level?
- 10:14Speaker 3: Really, this was a poor tackling game as well, So
- 10:17Speaker 3: it was a combination of pretty much everything. I'm sure
- 10:22Speaker 3: that Vic Vango probably hasn't smiled since then, and he
- 10:25Speaker 3: probably won't smile all week, knowing Vic. But yeah, they'll
- 10:30Speaker 3: work on a lot of things this week because this
- 10:33Speaker 3: was a bad performance in the run game.
- 10:35Speaker 1: I think the bigger concern again overall, bigger picture, is
- 10:39Speaker 1: that the Cowboys do not do.
- 10:42Speaker 2: As much outside.
- 10:42Speaker 1: They're more of an inside running team, and they also
- 10:46Speaker 1: have had a lot of success running, So I think
- 10:48Speaker 1: that goes back to strength, stamina, strength, like having to
- 10:53Speaker 1: bail out the offense every single game because the offense
- 10:56Speaker 1: doesn't sustain drives. I mean, I think you can fit
- 11:00Speaker 1: how you defend outside zone because the Eagles did that
- 11:03Speaker 1: well last year. The Vola played whoever the Saints, I
- 11:06Speaker 1: think it wasn't it fine? But I don't know if
- 11:08Speaker 1: you can fix all that's starting to ail them now,
- 11:11Speaker 1: which might just be wear and tear.
- 11:13Speaker 3: You know. And that's a great point because even Jalen Carter,
- 11:17Speaker 3: I mean, is playing a lot of snaps and you know, look,
- 11:22Speaker 3: I think we know that just as a player with
- 11:24Speaker 3: his traits that he's a dominant, dominant player and can be.
- 11:28Speaker 3: But he's played seventy two percent of the snaps as well,
- 11:31Speaker 3: and that's you know, again, that's usually a lot of
- 11:35Speaker 3: snaps for a defensive tackle. Sure, you'd love him to
- 11:38Speaker 3: play that many, but you know he's he's fighting. I
- 11:42Speaker 3: know that he's had some nagging injuries all year, which
- 11:45Speaker 3: is not an excuse if you're on the field, you're
- 11:46Speaker 3: playing football. But you know, he's certainly, I think it's
- 11:50Speaker 3: fair to say, and this is purely based on tape,
- 11:52Speaker 3: and I think you would agree he hasn't been the
- 11:54Speaker 3: dominant player he was a year ago on a consistent basis.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Yeah, No, definitely, definitely, And he actually even admitted after
- 12:02Speaker 1: the game that he felt like he should have done
- 12:04Speaker 1: a whole lot better of a job. But sometimes when
- 12:07Speaker 1: you want to and your body can't, it's telling you something,
- 12:10Speaker 1: and that could be the case. The last thing, you know,
- 12:13Speaker 1: there weren't that many big plays. What did you think
- 12:16Speaker 1: of Caleb Williams throwing the ball? Looks like both quarterbacks
- 12:20Speaker 1: struggling the win. May have he did something to do
- 12:22Speaker 1: with that, Yeah.
- 12:24Speaker 3: Yeah, And it's tough to again not being on the field.
- 12:26Speaker 3: I was not at the game obviously, so I don't know.
- 12:29Speaker 3: You know, it would strike me that Caleb Williams that
- 12:31Speaker 3: the win would not be a big factor, and his
- 12:33Speaker 3: ability to throw, because he's got a big time hose,
- 12:36Speaker 3: but it was, you know, he missed some throws. He
- 12:39Speaker 3: missed his throws every game. You know. I think he's
- 12:43Speaker 3: gotten incrementally better as the season has progressed in many areas,
- 12:48Speaker 3: but his ball location can be scattershot. He misses too
- 12:52Speaker 3: many throws. It's one reason he's about a fifty eight
- 12:54Speaker 3: percent thrower. You know, we obviously missed that touchdown to Duneesa,
- 13:00Speaker 3: which you know should have been an easy touchdown. But
- 13:02Speaker 3: then again he you know, he made that play for
- 13:05Speaker 3: the Commet touchdown, which really sort of put the game
- 13:08Speaker 3: out of reach, which was a great It was almost
- 13:11Speaker 3: an improvisational play because it was not designed to go
- 13:14Speaker 3: to Commet. And I looked at that play one hundred times.
- 13:17Speaker 3: I don't know, you plan on do we plan on
- 13:18Speaker 3: taking a look at that.
- 13:19Speaker 2: We'll go through that too. We'll go through that.
- 13:21Speaker 3: I I We'll wait till we go through it, and
- 13:24Speaker 3: then I'll give you my thoughts on.
- 13:26Speaker 2: It sounds good.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Hey.
- 13:27Speaker 1: One thing that always scares me is the latest financial scam.

- 16:08Speaker 1: let's get started right away here early first quarter Kalmananguy
- 16:13Speaker 1: seventeen yards and the cutback is something that you reference.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Both in the show and the notes. So do you
- 16:21Speaker 2: recall how.
- 16:22Speaker 3: The movie this was, This was the this started the
- 16:24Speaker 3: second possession. It was outside zone at him eleven personnel
- 16:28Speaker 3: versus the nickel. It was a great cutback. As you said,
- 16:31Speaker 3: Carter was the backside you know, three technique here and
- 16:34Speaker 3: he was just driven right out of his gap. I
- 16:37Speaker 3: mean you can see it. But again, notice how he's
- 16:40Speaker 3: moving laterally right to start. So it's not like he's
- 16:42Speaker 3: being physically you know, he's just you can tell by
- 16:46Speaker 3: the way his body is being moved that it's not
- 16:48Speaker 3: a physical thing. He's not fighting against it. He's just
- 16:51Speaker 3: moving with the flow, right, and that opens up the
- 16:54Speaker 3: cutback lane. And you know, Phillips has to deal he's
- 16:57Speaker 3: the boot player, so he's got to deal with the
- 17:00Speaker 3: potential boot action. So he's a non factor on the cutback.
- 17:03Speaker 3: And look at the hole. I mean, Jeff, you and
- 17:05Speaker 3: I can run through the hole together. Absolutely, we could
- 17:09Speaker 3: gain yards.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Let me just ask you about one thing really quick.
- 17:12Speaker 2: As we rewinded here, so motioned into this formation, is
- 17:16Speaker 2: DJ Moore here? And look kind of almost a full
- 17:19Speaker 2: back spot that's number two.
- 17:21Speaker 3: Yeah, it's almost like in an offset full back alignment.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Right, and then he's going to wind up running across
- 17:26Speaker 1: the pattern and almost like a fullback round. But does
- 17:29Speaker 1: that change anything for Jalen Phillips.
- 17:32Speaker 3: And that impacts Jalen Phillips because that shows that there
- 17:36Speaker 3: could be a boot element and a throw into the
- 17:38Speaker 3: flat okay, And and so that's why Jalen Phillips can't
- 17:42Speaker 3: he can't crash hard down inside because then there's no
- 17:46Speaker 3: flat player, right, and if it was a boot and he.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Throws it into the flat, there's no one there sure,
- 17:51Speaker 1: and he's pretty far away because of it. I wonder
- 17:53Speaker 1: if that's a fullback or a running back of Jalen
- 17:57Speaker 1: doesn't isn't as fearful because it's a wide receiver were there?
- 18:00Speaker 1: I don't even know if he notices that it's a wide.
- 18:02Speaker 3: You know, it almost has the same impact as his
- 18:04Speaker 3: own read. Yeah, where that that defender, that edge defender.
- 18:07Speaker 3: You know, he's got two responsibilities and you know the
- 18:11Speaker 3: defense the offense wants him to quote unquote gets wrong
- 18:14Speaker 3: because you know, it's kind of what happens all right,
- 18:17Speaker 3: Pretty there, he's got a responsibility.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Right, So we've got now the DeAndre Swift twenty three
- 18:25Speaker 1: yard run.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Will take a look at this from.
- 18:27Speaker 3: Oh, this I thought was a fascinating play because this
- 18:31Speaker 3: this was to me, I view this as a trap block,
- 18:34Speaker 3: not a wham block. And I thought this was a
- 18:36Speaker 3: fascinating way to get to a trap block because normally
- 18:39Speaker 3: a trap block is made by a guard. And so
- 18:42Speaker 3: what they do here by using comment as the trap
- 18:45Speaker 3: blocker is they're able to keep the guard to basically
- 18:49Speaker 3: double uh, you know, play side, and you know, therefore
- 18:53Speaker 3: they're not losing a body play side, so you know,
- 18:57Speaker 3: you know, I don't know if somebody people think this
- 18:59Speaker 3: is wham. I view it as a track because he's
- 19:02Speaker 3: coming from right adam as opposed to outside. So I
- 19:06Speaker 3: look at this as a creative way to run trap.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Yep, and it sure worked.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Uh you mentioned the tackle, oh man, I mean Sydney
- 19:13Speaker 1: Brown didn't stand it. I don't know if Andrew mccooba
- 19:15Speaker 1: would have made that tackle either in the open field,
- 19:18Speaker 1: but that was But the.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Point is, it's the NFL. Those are tackles you expect
- 19:22Speaker 3: your safety to make. I mean, you know, obviously, if
- 19:24Speaker 3: you're the Bears, you say, hey man, that's great, bye
- 19:26Speaker 3: bye by Swift. But if you're the Eagles or a
- 19:29Speaker 3: defensive coach, you know you got to make that tackle.
- 19:31Speaker 3: That's the way it worked. Here's what that's thought. This
- 19:34Speaker 3: was a really creative play, you know, the way they
- 19:36Speaker 3: he came back and right here on you know, and
- 19:41Speaker 3: and again the Eagles did this a lot with both
- 19:44Speaker 3: Dean and Bond, where they tried to run around blocks.
- 19:47Speaker 3: That's the other thing we saw in this game, besides
- 19:50Speaker 3: playing laterally is I thought the linebackers did not have
- 19:53Speaker 3: a good game either. Too many times they tried to
- 19:55Speaker 3: avoid blocks and they got themselves out of their gap.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Yeah, and you can see that here. I mean they're
- 20:00Speaker 2: literally on the opposite sides.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, yeah, Barnes jumping back the other way.
- 20:06Speaker 3: He's totally taking himself out of the play.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:09Speaker 1: At one point when I was watching, I thought maybe
- 20:10Speaker 1: they were confused about where the play side was. I
- 20:13Speaker 1: don't know, because it looks like they're intentionally trying to
- 20:15Speaker 1: get out of the way, which you know they're not
- 20:17Speaker 1: trying to do right of course, but when you're confused
- 20:20Speaker 1: or when you're off balanced, that that stuff happens.
- 20:25Speaker 2: So yeah, he tried to get.
- 20:26Speaker 3: Around because of the block by comment that the play
- 20:29Speaker 3: was going to go. You know, again, you don't know
- 20:31Speaker 3: what's in his head, right, so that's impossible to say.
- 20:36Speaker 3: But obviously another huge hole.
- 20:39Speaker 1: I know you wanted to point out it's just a
- 20:40Speaker 1: five yard run by Manogai here, but there was that
- 20:44Speaker 1: I think takes it down to the one. There was
- 20:47Speaker 1: something about this maybe with the double team on on
- 20:50Speaker 1: Davis here, it's just.
- 20:53Speaker 3: Uh yeah, I thought that this was a play where
- 20:55Speaker 3: Davis just stood you know where I thought felt like,
- 20:59Speaker 3: you know, it was an sample of how he stood
- 21:01Speaker 3: up and just starting to wear that's this is this
- 21:03Speaker 3: is I think where I wrote the number. Check the
- 21:06Speaker 3: number of snaps he's played all season, because I thought
- 21:08Speaker 3: that he just started at times to play. Look at
- 21:11Speaker 3: him right there.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Yeah, right off the jump, like right off the snap,
- 21:14Speaker 1: he's getting double team.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Then he's and he's high.
- 21:16Speaker 3: Yeah, and he's high. And you know, again he's had
- 21:19Speaker 3: a really really good season, but he's playing a lot
- 21:21Speaker 3: of snaps, right.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Even Carter's a little upright too.
- 21:25Speaker 1: But and obviously when you can get your offensive lineman
- 21:28Speaker 1: into the second level the way they were there, yeah,
- 21:31Speaker 1: and cover up guys.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Like Bawn and and Dean. Is that Tony that's up
- 21:37Speaker 2: out on Dean? Yeah, he gives Maybe that was.
- 21:41Speaker 3: Before contact in this game was really high for the
- 21:44Speaker 3: for the for the Bears.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Right now, here's DeAndre Swift's seventeen yarder later in the game, you.
- 21:55Speaker 3: Get started the third possession. This this was the misdirection
- 21:59Speaker 3: element right that packed Dean and the boot element that
- 22:02Speaker 3: impacted the gene. This is the one right.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Yes, this is the one. So let's talk about the
- 22:06Speaker 1: misdirection element of this. So, first thing you have is
- 22:12Speaker 1: the tight end motioning right into a full back position.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Then you have is that well, then you got the
- 22:17Speaker 1: jet action, the jet action. Who's fourteen afe that? Yeah,
- 22:23Speaker 1: the jet actions from right to left.
- 22:24Speaker 3: And then and then you got the tight end smythe
- 22:27Speaker 3: that smythe right. You know who's who's bet their third
- 22:30Speaker 3: tight end? And you know, very often and again I
- 22:33Speaker 3: haven't studied every single running play of the Bears. You know,
- 22:37Speaker 3: I'm one person. I'm sure coaches do that. But he
- 22:40Speaker 3: goes one way and very often teams think that, hey,
- 22:43Speaker 3: whichever way the fullback goes is often where the run goes.
- 22:46Speaker 3: So look at Dean. Look at Dean immediately go there. Yep.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Now again there could be a coverage element to that
- 22:54Speaker 3: as well, But the point is is he's removing himself
- 22:57Speaker 3: and then you get the boot action again and look
- 23:00Speaker 3: at the impact on Dejene because he's the boot player. Yeah.
- 23:03Speaker 1: I also want I'll credit the offensive line for the Bear.
- 23:06Speaker 1: I mean they are in this case, they are dry.
- 23:08Speaker 3: This is inside well block here if you just go back,
- 23:11Speaker 3: Jeff sure feed block here. Can you go back?
- 23:14Speaker 2: Yep.
- 23:16Speaker 3: This is not an easy block by Darnell right the
- 23:18Speaker 3: right tackle. This is a real block. This is not
- 23:21Speaker 3: just a guy going where he's going.
- 23:23Speaker 2: This is yeah on the right side.
- 23:25Speaker 3: Yeah, fifty eight Darnell right, that's that's just that's a
- 23:29Speaker 3: physical block. He's moving him.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Yep.
- 23:33Speaker 3: And who is that? I can't tell.
- 23:34Speaker 2: It looks like it's an It looks like someone in
- 23:37Speaker 2: the nineties. Nineties that's Jomo.
- 23:39Speaker 3: Okay, so he gets he gets moved here.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought of Jomo had a tough game. I mean,
- 23:45Speaker 1: we talked about him being more of a pass rusher.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Than I thought.
- 23:48Speaker 3: Both and Jomo had tough games.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Yeah, And I will say I felt like this was
- 23:52Speaker 1: for Joe Touney, his uh, his revenge for the Super Bowl,
- 23:55Speaker 1: because he had some pretty nice blocks too.
- 23:57Speaker 3: Yeah, well he's not he's not a tackle.
- 23:59Speaker 1: He's a guard exactly here showing them what he can
- 24:02Speaker 1: do when he's a guard.
- 24:03Speaker 3: He's pretty good, right, right.
- 24:06Speaker 1: So, yeah, you saw a lot of resetting of the
- 24:07Speaker 1: line of scrimmage there. Now you want to do isolate
- 24:11Speaker 1: this thirty one yard run by Manogai for specific reasons?
- 24:14Speaker 3: Yeah, this was this was the first play after the
- 24:16Speaker 3: Hurts fumble. Okay, Now this is what happens when you
- 24:21Speaker 3: start to have to play, because this is now a
- 24:23Speaker 3: third quarter possession. They've been run on. I mean in
- 24:26Speaker 3: the first half. Don't forget they ran forty four plays.
- 24:29Speaker 3: They were running on them. So what happens when that happens, Jeff,
- 24:32Speaker 3: is you have to start playing you know, more single high.
- 24:35Speaker 3: I mean, you got to get somebody else involved in
- 24:37Speaker 3: the run game, you know, from a defensive standpoint. So
- 24:40Speaker 3: now you see blanket ship down to the boundary side
- 24:42Speaker 3: of the formation, okay, and you see Brown on the
- 24:45Speaker 3: on the hash to the field. So what they do
- 24:47Speaker 3: is they send a dude. So right now they're in
- 24:49Speaker 3: a two by two set with the back as an eyeback.
- 24:53Speaker 3: So the back's not offset to either side. He's an eyeback.
- 24:55Speaker 3: So they're in a two by two okay, which means
- 24:58Speaker 3: for people who don't know listen or watching as well,
- 25:01Speaker 3: we hope that there's two receivers to each side because
- 25:05Speaker 3: the tight end counts. So now what happens is a
- 25:07Speaker 3: doonsday will motion across the formation. So if you want
- 25:11Speaker 3: to run that and then kind of stop it, okay,
- 25:12Speaker 3: So now what happens as they do that. It's funny.
- 25:16Speaker 3: I had a great conversation with a defensive coach a
- 25:20Speaker 3: couple of years ago who said, the biggest issue you
- 25:23Speaker 3: have with jet motion is you don't know if it's
- 25:27Speaker 3: jet motion or a change of strength. He said, and
- 25:31Speaker 3: there are two different things. But here, because of the
- 25:34Speaker 3: jet motion, now he's it's theoretically becoming a three by one. Okay,
- 25:40Speaker 3: so there's a change of strength. So what happens is
- 25:44Speaker 3: Blankenship now is on the weak side of the formation,
- 25:48Speaker 3: so he's dropping back and Brown has to drop down
- 25:52Speaker 3: because there's three receivers now to his side. So they
- 25:56Speaker 3: have to get someone else involved to the three receiver
- 25:59Speaker 3: side to change of strength for the offense. But now
- 26:03Speaker 3: they run back to the weak side where Blankenship is
- 26:07Speaker 3: leaving and retreating. So now you have less play. This
- 26:11Speaker 3: is an old Joe Gibbs philosophy for people listening who
- 26:15Speaker 3: you know, go back years. Joe Gibbs was one of
- 26:17Speaker 3: the first to deploy motion in the run game because
- 26:21Speaker 3: what it does is it impacts run support. And that's
- 26:25Speaker 3: exactly what happened here. It impacted run support. So when
- 26:29Speaker 3: he gets past the first level, the second level, there's
- 26:31Speaker 3: no one there, right, and so now Blankenship has to
- 26:35Speaker 3: be kind of reactive rather than proactive. And he's just
- 26:38Speaker 3: not in a good position. I know. Now he's just
- 26:40Speaker 3: fighting it.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, coming all the way from the other end.
- 26:43Speaker 2: So there it is.
- 26:44Speaker 1: You can see the signaling of us as he's jet
- 26:47Speaker 1: motioning here, right, you see.
- 26:49Speaker 3: Blank a good blanket Ship. It's a change of strength.
- 26:51Speaker 1: He's like, I got to get to the other side now,
- 26:53Speaker 1: and then oh no, they're running to the side.
- 26:56Speaker 2: I was just that right, Oh that's rough.
- 27:00Speaker 3: And there was a double involved here as well, play side,
- 27:04Speaker 3: and it was dominated with two techniques. Jomo driven out
- 27:09Speaker 3: of his gap, which then impacted Bond's ability to be
- 27:11Speaker 3: a factor because if you double, you know, a d tackle,
- 27:15Speaker 3: and you push him back from the stackpacker behind him,
- 27:18Speaker 3: you know, all of a sudden he has people in
- 27:20Speaker 3: his lap and he can't do anything.
- 27:22Speaker 2: There it is. I mean you see him going right,
- 27:23Speaker 2: I mean, now.
- 27:24Speaker 3: Look at Born right now, perfect freeze Baughn is like, okay,
- 27:26Speaker 3: what am I doing right now? I don't know. I
- 27:29Speaker 3: don't know where the back's going, and I'm kind of stuck.
- 27:32Speaker 1: Yeah, he's running headfirst into a block and then he
- 27:35Speaker 1: gets off it pretty well.
- 27:36Speaker 3: But it's actually sixty two. That's Tony does a really
- 27:40Speaker 3: nice job on Jordan Davis here.
- 27:41Speaker 4: If you want to go back, yeah, another example, if
- 27:44Speaker 4: you can go back, yeah you'll see because yeah, he
- 27:49Speaker 4: does a really nice job here because he's got to
- 27:50Speaker 4: get inside or outside of him, as the case may
- 27:53Speaker 4: be here, and you can see he does.
- 27:55Speaker 3: That's not an easy block. That's a really really good block.
- 27:59Speaker 1: Yeah, outside zone, but you're horizontal, You're got to move
- 28:02Speaker 1: her feet and yeah, and if.
- 28:04Speaker 3: You're Clint hurt, you're telling Jordan Davis you can't let
- 28:06Speaker 3: that happen. You can't let that happen. You got to
- 28:08Speaker 3: cross his face.
- 28:09Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, all right. So those are all the runs
- 28:15Speaker 2: that we're gonna show. I wanted to go. Have you
- 28:18Speaker 2: diagnosed the fourth down catch by Loveland?
- 28:22Speaker 3: Oh? Oh, the four oh, the one where he made
- 28:24Speaker 3: the outcut against blankenship.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Yes, anything other than beating a guy on a corner man.
- 28:31Speaker 3: And you know, look, I don't know whether they anticipated
- 28:34Speaker 3: they get blanket ship on Loveland because blanket ship normally
- 28:37Speaker 3: does not match up to tight ends. But you know
- 28:39Speaker 3: now you have Sidney Brown is the other safety, so
- 28:42Speaker 3: you know you haven't you know, that's where an issue arises.
- 28:45Speaker 3: I mean, so you know they might feel that blanken
- 28:47Speaker 3: Ship's better at this, and you know, so he just
- 28:50Speaker 3: beats them one on one on the outcut. They're playing man.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the issue with that Macouba is that you
- 28:55Speaker 1: really don't have a coverage safety anymore.
- 28:57Speaker 3: No, you don't. You don't have a man coverage safety
- 28:59Speaker 3: right now.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Right, And here's the Comet touchdown. So what did you
- 29:02Speaker 1: like about this?
- 29:03Speaker 3: This was a great play by Williams because this play
- 29:06Speaker 3: was designed to throw it to swift in the flat.
- 29:07Speaker 3: Now here's here's what let's assume. When I watch plays
- 29:12Speaker 3: that have motion that are past plays, don't don't run
- 29:15Speaker 3: it yet. I always think, okay, what if they snap
- 29:18Speaker 3: the ball, now, who's gonna play who? Because you don't
- 29:20Speaker 3: know they're gonna go in motion, right, So if they
- 29:23Speaker 3: snap the ball, now, to me, Degene has the outside
- 29:29Speaker 3: tight end, Brown would have Comet. Okay, well, I don't
- 29:35Speaker 3: know is that com I saw this better from the
- 29:38Speaker 3: end zone. But so the point is they go in motion. Yeah,
- 29:41Speaker 3: go ahead. Now you can just run it, so it's
- 29:45Speaker 3: not motion. But what happens is Comet goes out and
- 29:50Speaker 3: and the and the outside tight end. Who's loved Ones's
- 29:53Speaker 3: you know, he he blocks, So Degene if he's got Lovelin,
- 29:58Speaker 3: which I think he does, then he's sort of freed
- 30:01Speaker 3: up in his mind as a defender. And Brown now
- 30:06Speaker 3: if he has Comet, and I think he does, then
- 30:09Speaker 3: he's got to stay with him once he releases. Because
- 30:12Speaker 3: what happens here is this ball supposed to go in
- 30:14Speaker 3: the flat, but Williams, seeing that no one is going
- 30:18Speaker 3: to be playing Comet by the body language, he just
- 30:20Speaker 3: goes onto it and he throws it to Comet. It
- 30:22Speaker 3: happens to be a great freaking throat too, by the way.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I was really impressed, especially with the wind go.
- 30:26Speaker 1: He throws it on his back foot jumping. That's like
- 30:29Speaker 1: a basketball pass, you know.
- 30:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that was beautiful.
- 30:33Speaker 3: Do you have this here?
- 30:37Speaker 2: I'll go back. I don't have a angle on it.
- 30:40Speaker 3: No, okay, you don't, okay, But yeah, that's what I
- 30:43Speaker 3: try to think of, you know, how it plays out.
- 30:45Speaker 3: Obviously there wasn't motion, but but I think Degene had
- 30:48Speaker 3: the outside tight end and then Brown's got the the
- 30:50Speaker 3: inside tight end. Who was who was? Comment? So I
- 30:53Speaker 3: think that's true. Like I said, they maybe have a
- 30:56Speaker 3: different way they play it, but I think Brown kind
- 30:59Speaker 3: of got.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Yeah, it's funny if you did throw it in the flat.
- 31:02Speaker 1: I mean there's who's four? Is that Deandro Swift?
- 31:06Speaker 3: Yeah he probably gets the first down.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean the way that you see how far
- 31:12Speaker 1: the gene is and up the field and get inside
- 31:16Speaker 1: the fifteen at least.
- 31:17Speaker 3: But yeah, this play was called to get a first down,
- 31:19Speaker 3: not a touchdown, and it ended up being a touchdown, right,
- 31:23Speaker 3: And this was the one that made it twenty four
- 31:24Speaker 3: to nine.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Hey, it's Jeff Mosher.
- 31:26Speaker 1: And if you have a family and kids at home,

- 33:40Speaker 1: one and up. And that was basically that's all she
- 33:43Speaker 1: wrote for the Eagles on brightn So real.
- 33:46Speaker 2: Quick before we get out of here.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Chargers their run game look pretty good this last gey
- 33:50Speaker 1: they're playing the Raiders. They might get o'mari and Hampton back.
- 33:53Speaker 1: They don't have both of their offensive tackles though. Are
- 33:56Speaker 1: they an inside zone outside zone?
- 33:59Speaker 2: Do they motion? Do they do some things that the
- 34:01Speaker 2: Bears do?
- 34:03Speaker 3: You know, it's funny. I haven't watched their tape yet
- 34:05Speaker 3: this week, and I don't think I saw them though,
- 34:08Speaker 3: because they didn't they kind of.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Buy yes, they have before.
- 34:12Speaker 3: So I've got I got to re redo the chargers,
- 34:14Speaker 3: you know, because I can't remember all the details so well,
- 34:17Speaker 3: you know, when we talk about them later in the week,
- 34:18Speaker 3: I'll know a lot more. But you know, obviously, as
- 34:21Speaker 3: we're doing this, we know that that Herbert broke his
- 34:24Speaker 3: you know, as a broken bone. You know, he's the
- 34:27Speaker 3: kind of guy that if he can walk, he can play,
- 34:29Speaker 3: So you know, who knows what's going to happen there.
- 34:33Speaker 3: But you know, I think with the tackles being out,
- 34:36Speaker 3: you know, you want to be able to run the ball,
- 34:38Speaker 3: which they were able to do against the Raiders on Sunday.
- 34:42Speaker 3: But you know, and they've had success at times this
- 34:45Speaker 3: year when they run the ball. You know, the dow
- 34:47Speaker 3: the Dal's been he's done a nice job. He would
- 34:50Speaker 3: assume Hampton's back this week based on the fact that
- 34:53Speaker 3: he was really close this week, So you know, you're
- 34:57Speaker 3: they're gonna look at this tape and feel like we
- 34:59Speaker 3: at least have to test it and see. You know, look,
- 35:01Speaker 3: the Eagles normally have a very good defense. But the
- 35:04Speaker 3: only thing that would concern me is just, you know,
- 35:06Speaker 3: the number of snaps they're playing, because it's one thing
- 35:10Speaker 3: to you know, to get better tactically or try to
- 35:13Speaker 3: do things right. But if guys are a little worn out,
- 35:16Speaker 3: you know, he might have to play Byron Young a
- 35:18Speaker 3: little more. He just might have to.
- 35:19Speaker 1: I think they're I think I agree with you. I
- 35:21Speaker 1: think they have to get more bodies out there and
- 35:23Speaker 1: give you guys a little rest.
- 35:25Speaker 2: All right, that is good.
- 35:26Speaker 1: Oh, by the way, last thing Chargers will talk about
- 35:28Speaker 1: it in the pregame show. Over the last five weeks,
- 35:31Speaker 1: they have the eighth most rushing yards in the NFL,
- 35:33Speaker 1: third most attempts, so they are starting to run the ball.
- 35:35Speaker 3: And the one thing I will say, you know, and
- 35:37Speaker 3: again because I haven't studied them, you know recently in
- 35:39Speaker 3: great detail, and I will, it's still a Greg Roman
- 35:42Speaker 3: run game. And he does a lot of really good things. Yes,
- 35:45Speaker 3: he's really good with formations, with use of personnel, with
- 35:49Speaker 3: angles and leverage. I mean, this is who he is.
- 35:51Speaker 3: This is what he does.
- 35:53Speaker 2: All right, We'll see if the Eagles can counter that
- 35:56Speaker 2: is going to do it.
- 35:56Speaker 1: For the defensive version of inside the they with Greg Gosel.
- 36:01Speaker 1: On the next episode we do the offense. So for
- 36:03Speaker 1: Greg Cosell, I'm Jeff Mosher. Catch you all on the
- 36:06Speaker 1: next one.
