- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:13I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:21everyone. Before I get into it, as a
- 0:24reminder, we have a buy me a coffee link in the top of every
- 0:27description. If you guys want to support
- 0:29Centennial World, you want to keep supporting Mini Scroll,
- 0:32help us keep going. We so appreciate every
- 0:34contribution and every single dollar goes back into the
- 0:37business for real all right, let's get into the stories for
- 0:43today. The first word that I have for
- 0:45you guys is that Amaranth has returned to twitch.
- 0:48So amaranth, whose real name is Caitlin, is one of the most
- 0:51popular streamers online. She does a variety of streaming
- 0:55ranging from gaming, ASMR and more vlog style IRL streams.
- 1:00You may have heard of amaranth because she is often in the news
- 1:04for a quote UN quote controversial business
- 1:06decisions. People have a lot of things to
- 1:08say about the fact that she does, only she sells her own
- 1:11bathwater. She also developed an AI
- 1:14companion chat bot. She's a businesswoman, OK, but
- 1:18like many streamers, Amaranth first blew up on Twitch.
- 1:21Since then, she's moved to Kik, which is Twitch's major
- 1:24competitor. So she did have somewhat of a
- 1:26strange relationship with Twitch, given that she was
- 1:29repeatedly banned from the platform.
- 1:31She reportedly had a deal with Kik, where she revealed in an
- 1:34interview with Dex Turdo that this deal had basically doubled
- 1:38her income. She signed the deal in mid 2023
- 1:42and has since been streaming there ever since.
- 1:44As we know, there was kind of a mass migration of streamers from
- 1:48Twitch to Kik. When Kik first really took off,
- 1:52they were paying streamers a lot of money and you know, streamers
- 1:55had had issues with Twitch for years.
- 1:58So going over to Kik with all the money that they could make
- 2:01and the platform seemingly prioritizing creators a bit
- 2:03more, it was really appealing. However, the flip side of that
- 2:07is Kik is very controversial. You know, it is primarily A
- 2:10gambling platform. It's backed by the crypto
- 2:13gambling powerhousestake.com. So the guidelines on Kik are a
- 2:17lot more lenient, but it obviously makes it a little bit
- 2:20less of a safe platform. And yeah, there's just a lot of
- 2:23controversy around it. We've covered it here and there
- 2:25over the years. So Amaranth, I guess, was one of
- 2:27the creators that moved over from Twitch to Kick.
- 2:29However, a couple of days ago, she posted a video to her ex
- 2:33account, which essentially was announcing her return to Twitch.
- 2:37So she was filling up the gas of a green car, which is obviously
- 2:41the color of Kicks logo. And the video says I'm on my way
- 2:45after I refuel a bit, be there soon.
- 2:47And then she jumps in the car and drives away.
- 2:50But then the car turns purple, which of course is Twitch's logo
- 2:54color. And according to coverage from
- 2:56Dexterto about the video, apparently in the original edit,
- 3:00a little SpongeBob guy popped up that said $38 million later.
- 3:05You know that meme that's like 2 hours later, three days later.
- 3:08So I guess it said $38 million later.
- 3:13And then the car turned purple, I guess implying that she made
- 3:18$38 million on Kik. So obviously, this is
- 3:21interesting because no matter how you feel about Amaranth or
- 3:24Kick and all of the controversies around both of
- 3:27those things, you know, this really indicates how streaming
- 3:30platforms are adjusting their strategies when it comes to
- 3:33tapping creators. As pointed out in that same
- 3:36Dexterto article quote, it's also not clear yet if Amaranth's
- 3:40Kick deal has expired or if she's leaving early.
- 3:43Kick, like many platforms, has moved away from signing creators
- 3:46to contracts and has instead urged them to multistream.
- 3:50I mean, they weren't going to be able to keep up these creator
- 3:52contracts forever, right? That's kind of what happens with
- 3:55these platforms. They launch or they launch new
- 3:57features, and they're incentivizing creators so much
- 4:00so quickly because they really want to draw people in as time
- 4:03goes on. They can't keep that up, so they
- 4:05start charging for certain features or you know, they
- 4:08really decrease what you make on the platform, things like that.
- 4:12OK, the next one that I have for you guys, this is kind of rogue.
- 4:16OK, I'm going to be honest, you guys will be able to tell from
- 4:19today's episode. It was a tough Newsday.
- 4:21It was actually like, it's not often that I really struggle to
- 4:25find 3 full stories for the episode.
- 4:28Like every once in a while it'll be like, oh, I have two strong
- 4:31stories, I need to find a third whatever.
- 4:34No, today, like Annabelle and I were both looking for hours.
- 4:38It was a very slow Newsday in terms of like Internet culture
- 4:42news. So this is kind of a rogue one,
- 4:44but I'm interested in it because I was a fan.
- 4:46So Pretty Little Liars turned 15, and the cast did an
- 4:50interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
- 4:52Obviously, Pretty Little Liars is one of the most popular teen
- 4:55shows of the 20 tens. And the cast members Lucy Hale,
- 5:00Tori and Belsario. Ashley Benson, Shay Mitchell,
- 5:03Sasha Petrus, Ian Harding, Tyler Blackburn, Keegan Allen and
- 5:07Marlene King Marlene King was the producer but did an
- 5:10interview with The Hollywood Reporter to relive some of the
- 5:13biggest discussion points during the show.
- 5:15The interview was quite long, but social media users were
- 5:18particularly interested in their reflections around the
- 5:22relationship between Aria and Ezra.
- 5:25For context, if you do not remember or you did not watch,
- 5:29Ezra was Aria's high school teacher when they started
- 5:32dating. So that is already a very
- 5:35concerning power dynamic and age gap.
- 5:38And to make matters worse throughout the show, as we're
- 5:40really never faced any repercussions for the
- 5:42relationship and the couple even, you know, got married on
- 5:45the show. And on top of this, it was also
- 5:48revealed in the series that Ezra targeted Aria to get information
- 5:52about Allison De Laurentiis, who was obviously Aria's friend who
- 5:56went missing. Allison AI don't know.
- 5:59It's hard to explain because honestly I don't even freaking
- 6:01remember what happened in the series was like so chaotic but
- 6:05Allison was like thought to be the original A OK obviously we
- 6:08know that's not really how it turned out.
- 6:10In the recent interview Sasha who played Allison, said one
- 6:13comment that is going quite viral.
- 6:15Quote to Ezras credit, he met her at a college bar.
- 6:18Why would he think she's underage?
- 6:20In so many ways it's Arias bad. It's an interesting storyline
- 6:24that everybody just inherently loved.
- 6:26I had a crazy fan experience the other day where this girl told
- 6:29me she was dating her teacher because of the show.
- 6:31She was like, and I started dating my teacher and I was like
- 6:34Oh no. Oh, Oh no, Oh no.
- 6:39And obviously these people are characters, but Sasha in this
- 6:42quote is admitting that the influence of what we saw on TV
- 6:47in between these two characters has impacted people in real
- 6:50life. So of course, other cast members
- 6:52noted that this type of storyline would not make the cut
- 6:55now and that it was a very different time, Lucy Hale said,
- 6:58quote, It was a different time. Would that storyline exist if it
- 7:02were being made now? I'm not sure, but probably not.
- 7:05At the time I was cast as Arya, I was 19 years old and I wasn't
- 7:08really thinking about the bigger themes of it all.
- 7:10I was just stoked to be cast on a TV show.
- 7:13Of course, it hits differently at my age now, and I think about
- 7:15the bigger message in anything I play.
- 7:17I don't have regrets, though. I stand behind their love story
- 7:20forever. That forbidden love story drew a
- 7:23lot of people in. Forbidden because he was her
- 7:26teacher, her the romanticization that they all still seemingly
- 7:31have for this fictional couple, which was gross and weird and
- 7:36problematic is wild. Just I actually this I actually
- 7:42don't really have any words. I actually don't have words.
- 7:45I I don't know. I find this really shocking.
- 7:47Just be like, yeah, it was wrong.
- 7:50It could never go today. You know, it was definitely
- 7:53something that was missed in the plot, in the storyline.
- 7:56I wish we would have addressed it better.
- 7:58But I also understand they're sitting up there with, you know,
- 8:02a huge cast, members of the crew.
- 8:05I understand they probably also didn't want to be like throwing
- 8:08anyone under the bus, but like, come on.
- 8:10I don't know. What do you guys think about
- 8:12that? I am really surprised by those
- 8:14takes from the cast. OK, and the last story that I
- 8:17have for you guys, I'm actually thrilled to be talking about
- 8:21this story. We have to talk about the home
- 8:24decorating show that is going viral on TikTok.
- 8:28I cannot stop reposting clips of this show.
- 8:31Actually fun fact about me. So I have like a brand account,
- 8:35like a well, we have like obviously a Centennial world
- 8:37podcast network, TikTok account, which is literally we get like
- 8:4150 followers away from 100,000 followers.
- 8:43So please go follow us if you aren't as we have that TikTok
- 8:46account. I have like a professional
- 8:48TikTok account. So it used to be our infinite
- 8:50scroll podcast TikTok account. And then I just like since Jordy
- 8:53left, it didn't make sense for me to keep that going because
- 8:55that podcast didn't really exist anymore.
- 8:57And like so many of those videos were the one that like did
- 8:59really well were between her and I.
- 9:01So I privated a lot of the videos and then I started using
- 9:04it as my own TikTok account documenting, trying to scale a
- 9:08podcast network because it's obviously still very much
- 9:10related to the podcast anyways. And then I have like my personal
- 9:13account where I just like repost and post random shit.
- 9:16And that account, I am like addicted to reposting.
- 9:20And the girls constantly make fun of me.
- 9:23They say it's like the most millennial thing in me is that
- 9:26I'm like addicted to reposting on TikTok.
- 9:28And it's because it literally gives me the same thrill as
- 9:32reposting on Twitter. Like that is very millennial of
- 9:34me. Like I loved Twitter.
- 9:36Like I lived and breathed Twitter before it got absolutely
- 9:40like decimated, dated by Elon Musk.
- 9:42I was addicted to retweeting on Twitter and now I'm addicted to
- 9:44reposting on TikTok and I constantly get compliments for
- 9:48my repost. OK, people always message me and
- 9:50they say like, your reposts are so funny.
- 9:52When I see Lauren has reposted, I know I need to lock in And I'm
- 9:55like, exactly. I am a cultural curator for you
- 9:58guys. OK, very often I'm not scrolling
- 10:00my for you page. I am going into my repost and
- 10:03I'm scrolling my repost because I'm laughing so hard because I
- 10:06am amazing at this. Like, I have a gift.
- 10:08I have a gift. OK, So all of that to say this
- 10:13like a 90s decorating show called Decorating Sense, as in
- 10:19CENTS is going viral all over TikTok and I can't stop
- 10:23reposting it. It's a show from the 90s, like I
- 10:25said, and it was hosted by Joan Steffand.
- 10:28The premise of the show was that they would take a room and
- 10:31redesign it. OK, There were a lot of shows
- 10:33like this, you know, trading spaces.
- 10:35Like it was kind of like that vibe.
- 10:36These like design vibes. According to to HGT VS Blurb
- 10:40quote, Decorating scents is for home owners who care about and
- 10:44want variety and home decor. Variety the key here, but are
- 10:48trying to stay within an affordable budget.
- 10:50In each episode, host Joan Steffen and guest designers
- 10:54provide room makeovers costing less than $500, ways to turn
- 10:58trash into treasures, and tips on making a room feel and look
- 11:02fresh by rearranging furniture and adding a few inexpensive
- 11:06accessories. Rob Anderson is a TikTok creator
- 11:09and he's going pretty viral for talking about this on TikTok.
- 11:12The clips like we're going everywhere.
- 11:14I think it's uploaded. I want to say paramount, like I
- 11:16think it just got onto a streaming service and people
- 11:20were like what is going on? And so it's been uploaded and
- 11:23Rob Anderson has been posting a lot about it.
- 11:25He's going quite viral for talking about it.
- 11:27And he basically makes fun of how like every single room they
- 11:31try and like redesign just like gets worse.
- 11:33OK, Some of the main examples of unhinged things that they are
- 11:37doing in their core. In one episode they use
- 11:40children's clothing as decor. So they literally take the
- 11:45parents like their their children's clothes and they like
- 11:49hang them on the wall and they like put their shoes on a bench,
- 11:54you know, as like a decor, like everything is decked out in
- 11:57their kids like dirty clothes. And I think it was Rob that said
- 12:01he like reviewed this room and he was like, OK, maybe if their
- 12:04child passed away at like a soccer match, this could be like
- 12:08a tribute room to them. But like, what is going on?
- 12:11There's another scene where so they they love they love window
- 12:17treatments. They love a window treatments,
- 12:19They love a door frame treatment.
- 12:21There's a lot of fake vines going on.
- 12:24They love a fake vine, a fake leaf around a door frame, around
- 12:29a window. There was also a scene where
- 12:32instead of hanging curtains or blinds in a kitchen in the
- 12:36window, they hung strings of pitchers like lemonade pitchers.
- 12:44And they're like, look at how creative this is.
- 12:46That's not blinds. Like what?
- 12:49And one of the frequent guest designers is Nancy, who is
- 12:54actually the mother of Nate Berkess, who if you guys know
- 12:58anything about like 2000s, 2010's design culture, American
- 13:02designers. Like he is one of the most
- 13:05famous designers from that time. And everyone's like, how, how is
- 13:09this possible? Oh my God.
- 13:10There's also one where they talk about how like the hard wood
- 13:14floors always get so like dirty and stuff scuffed up because
- 13:17they have dogs and like family, whatever.
- 13:19And so instead of just like buying a rug, they paint a rug
- 13:25on the hardwood floor. They paint a rug and they love
- 13:28to use stamps. Like they will literally buy
- 13:31like, I don't know, cut out like foam and stuff into different
- 13:34shapes and they will just like randomly stamp colorful paint
- 13:38stamps like all around like on the floor, on the backsplash, on
- 13:42the walls. Oh, and they they love a sponge.
- 13:45They love that like sponge paint that was really popular in like
- 13:48the nineties, 2000s. And honestly, the whole thing
- 13:51really just explains like this show really shows younger
- 13:54generations like why millennial Gray happened because it's not
- 13:59that like my friends and I grew up in houses like this, but it
- 14:03was a lot more like this than it was like millennial grey.
- 14:06Like these design choices, these homes are unhinged.
- 14:09But it was so common for 90s kids to grow up like the
- 14:13boomers. They loved a crazy colorful like
- 14:16a bathroom. Like I remember when I was
- 14:18younger, my mom did that sponge paint technique all over my
- 14:23parents bedroom in green. I don't know, my kitchen was
- 14:26pink growing up. It's it was just like the design
- 14:30vibes like this. This show was actually unhinged,
- 14:33the stuff that they're doing and they're like, oh and look, this
- 14:35only cost us $35 and it's like in the nineties, $35 for decor
- 14:39could probably stretch quite far.
- 14:41How have you made everything look so bad?
- 14:44It looks insane. Anyways, I highly recommend
- 14:49looking up these episodes or looking up these clips of
- 14:51decorating scents. They are so funny.
- 14:54It's actually wild. The stuff that they are doing.
- 14:57It makes no sense. Everything looks so ugly but
- 15:01it's so good. It's so good.
- 15:02I can't stop. I cannot stop.
- 15:04My whole for you page is just this show and I hope it never
- 15:08ends. Anyways guys that's it for mini
- 15:12scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 15:15Please remember to rate review and subscribe.
- 15:17Please consider buying us a coffee if you want to help keep
- 15:20us going. I love you guys and Annabelle
- 15:23will talk to you guys tomorrow. Bye.
