- 0:05Speaker 1: point nine Radio Folkston. On today's show we have local
- 0:17Speaker 1: cricket news. My report on Sunday's Race for Life were
- 0:21Speaker 1: myself and warm up lady completed. And we think we're
- 0:24Speaker 1: not sure. We think we've now done twenty five consecutive
- 0:27Speaker 1: years of being on stage. We've got to look back
- 0:34Speaker 1: at last Saturday when I popped along to the Folks
- 0:36Speaker 1: and Rugby Club's celebration day where I've watched the Tournament
- 0:39Speaker 1: of Touch rugby. All ages were included. Sunday afternoon, I
- 0:47Speaker 1: was a quiz master for Martin Murray, John Morton, then
- 0:50Speaker 1: their wives Rachel and Eve, and they're raising money for
- 0:53Speaker 1: Action Children the Research Action and Medical Research. They've undertaken
- 0:58Speaker 1: a challenge called the Sun, which includes a thirty two
- 1:01Speaker 1: mile a bike ride, a nine mile hike and a
- 1:04Speaker 1: two mile paddle in a four man kayak, which they
- 1:08Speaker 1: haven't practiced. I'll tell you that now. I'll be telling
- 1:11Speaker 1: you all about that shortly. That's if we can cram
- 1:16Speaker 1: it all in. But I also have a special guest
- 1:21Speaker 1: in the studio, Kaffsmith from the Folkston Amateur Boxing Club
- 1:25Speaker 1: is going to tell us all about some class since
- 1:27Speaker 1: she's running, which include a forty five minute lunchtime sessions
- 1:31Speaker 1: Friday mornings, stress release, girls only sessions for thirteen to
- 1:35Speaker 1: seventeen year olds to learn new skills and much more.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Now we love finding out all about your local sports
- 1:44Speaker 1: here on Radio Folkston. So don't go away as we've
- 1:46Speaker 1: got to get this show on the road. And this
- 1:50Speaker 1: is a great track. This is a brilliant track that
- 1:53Speaker 1: will sum up this show today. This is called high
- 1:56Speaker 1: Energy and Evelin Thomas.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Your loan and live in your loan.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Well, what a great show. A great song to start
- 2:42Speaker 1: the show there. That's higher energy from Evening Thomas because
- 2:47Speaker 1: we've got a high energy guest in today now Joy
- 2:49Speaker 1: by Cav Smith from the Folkston Amateur Boxing Club. Welcome
- 2:52Speaker 1: to the show, Cav. How are you may I'm great?
- 2:55Speaker 2: Thank you?
- 2:55Speaker 1: Yeah good good? You come right in. That's it. Yeah.
- 2:58Speaker 1: And so now Cav, we're going to talk about something
- 3:02Speaker 1: you've started. You've started some new classes for ladies. But
- 3:06Speaker 1: before we do that, just tell us a little bit
- 3:09Speaker 1: about yourself. Hey, you got involved with the boxing club.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Okay, back in well, two thousand and five. I first
- 3:16Speaker 2: started going to the club when it was at Mary's
- 3:19Speaker 2: Social Club, so uptover road, just start the road from here,
- 3:23Speaker 2: and it was just the ladies' classes, so getting involved
- 3:27Speaker 2: with that, bring a few friends along, and I just
- 3:30Speaker 2: found it just so much fun and you know, really
- 3:33Speaker 2: good vibe about the whole thing.
- 3:35Speaker 1: It was just so you joined it just as a
- 3:38Speaker 1: as a student guest or what if you like.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Or yeah, just coming in and trying something different because
- 3:44Speaker 2: I was weightlifting at the time quite a lot and
- 3:47Speaker 2: fancied something yeah, a little bit different fitness wise, so
- 3:50Speaker 2: it went along. It absolutely obliterated me the first But
- 3:56Speaker 2: that's quite addictive, yeah, because you think, do you know what,
- 3:59Speaker 2: there's something that makes it progressive and a little bit
- 4:02Speaker 2: out of reach. Yeah.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Yeah. And were there many at the classes in those days?
- 4:06Speaker 2: In those days there was only about six to eight ladies. Yeah,
- 4:12Speaker 2: it was quite new in introder like ladies sessions basically. Yeah,
- 4:17Speaker 2: but it was a lot of fun.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Good. Well, I'll tell you what this is going back
- 4:21Speaker 1: a bit. I mean I've involved with Barry and the
- 4:24Speaker 1: boxing club. Oh, I can't remember how many years, And
- 4:28Speaker 1: I think these things go in cycles, because at one
- 4:31Speaker 1: point I had a guest in and she was a
- 4:34Speaker 1: female boxer and she used to do the boxer size
- 4:37Speaker 1: ups at Mary's and there was loads of them. I
- 4:39Speaker 1: actually went up there one night for training, not to train,
- 4:42Speaker 1: but I took my little voice recorder and they recorded
- 4:45Speaker 1: a few interviews and yeah, there was some real action
- 4:50Speaker 1: going on. So you did that for a while. So
- 4:53Speaker 1: what was the next stage in your sort of boxing development.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Well, I had a break for a little while I
- 5:00Speaker 2: had my son and then realized I really needed to
- 5:03Speaker 2: get back into fitness again. Kind of got a little
- 5:06Speaker 2: bit bored, I know, shouldn't say that of weight training.
- 5:09Speaker 2: As you do you go and fits and starts, and thought, no,
- 5:12Speaker 2: I'm going to head back to the club, see if
- 5:14Speaker 2: it's still about, see what's going on. And I walked
- 5:17Speaker 2: in there and well, there were so many ladies. It
- 5:20Speaker 2: was just packed this place. And it was the summer
- 5:24Speaker 2: so it was really warm.
- 5:25Speaker 1: It was an old were you still up up the
- 5:27Speaker 1: hill there? Yeah?
- 5:29Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, so it's an old spitting swordust boxing gym.
- 5:32Speaker 2: But what we all knew and loved about it, and yeah,
- 5:36Speaker 2: it kind of up that fitness level again because you
- 5:38Speaker 2: got these ladies in there then that were like really
- 5:40Speaker 2: really up in their game and made you push yourself.
- 5:44Speaker 2: It really did, to the point where I was going
- 5:46Speaker 2: on runs, I was taking up the rope in the garden,
- 5:48Speaker 2: I was doing all this.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Yeah, oh god. So so then the boxing club moves,
- 5:54Speaker 1: didn't it? So did you? Did you follow it? Or
- 5:57Speaker 1: did you have another little break?
- 5:59Speaker 2: No? No, followed down there and our knew air conditioned
- 6:03Speaker 2: sight bigger as well, bigger, and yeah, yeah.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Did the ladies follow you as well? Did the ladies
- 6:12Speaker 1: follow it down?
- 6:13Speaker 2: They followed the club down? And yeah again new members
- 6:17Speaker 2: come in and go in all the time, but still
- 6:19Speaker 2: like really really busy evenings.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, oh excellent. And at this at this
- 6:23Speaker 1: point where you still just like a student, now you've
- 6:25Speaker 1: turned your hand to a teacher. Nevern't year.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Yeah yeah. At this point I was just still going,
- 6:30Speaker 2: still up in my fitness game, getting quite into nutrition
- 6:33Speaker 2: at that point, really really interested. And then I saw
- 6:37Speaker 2: an advertisement come up. Funny enough, lot of word of
- 6:40Speaker 2: mouth through the club, but on Facebook, and I thought,
- 6:44Speaker 2: you know what, I'm just going to put my name
- 6:46Speaker 2: out there. I'm just going to see because I do
- 6:48Speaker 2: quite fancy doing that, and yeah, Harry got back to
- 6:51Speaker 2: me and I started my training.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Right. What levels did you have to do to start
- 6:57Speaker 1: your training or did you have to get a coaching
- 6:59Speaker 1: badge of some description?
- 7:00Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, you had to do a certain amount of
- 7:04Speaker 2: voluntary work with there, which the evenings are voluntary for
- 7:07Speaker 2: us all. And yeah, I to go for my level one.
- 7:11Speaker 2: So that was a bit of written and a bit
- 7:13Speaker 2: of practical and all that sort of thing. Had this
- 7:15Speaker 2: guy come down from London from like the army boxing
- 7:19Speaker 2: kind of sector and he trained us, and yeah, I
- 7:24Speaker 2: was really quite proud to have done that many a
- 7:27Speaker 2: year later with my level two.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Right, do you have to take an exam or some
- 7:31Speaker 1: sort of.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Yeah, you have to do like a written exam, you
- 7:34Speaker 2: have to do a practical exam all on the day.
- 7:38Speaker 1: So the practical exam does that test your fitness or
- 7:40Speaker 1: the kind of knowledge of what you've got to do.
- 7:42Speaker 2: It's a little bit of both, but more on the
- 7:45Speaker 2: knowledge side. To make sure you're safe, to make sure
- 7:48Speaker 2: that you are taking care of people who come in
- 7:51Speaker 2: there and doing things correctly.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, yeah, because you don't want to teach some
- 7:55Speaker 1: the wrong thing, do you. Okay, we're going to take
- 8:00Speaker 1: a little break.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Now.
- 8:01Speaker 1: I've been looking for some songs that in the playlist
- 8:03Speaker 1: that are related to boxing. Now I've come across this one,
- 8:07Speaker 1: and I must admit I haven't heard it. It was
- 8:09Speaker 1: it was brought out in night. No, I haven't heard
- 8:11Speaker 1: it for a long time, to be fair, it was.
- 8:14Speaker 1: It came out in a nineteen eighty three and this
- 8:17Speaker 1: is Joe Boxers and a Boxer Beata and we'll be
- 8:34Speaker 1: doing the so from nineteen eighty three Boxer Beats and
- 8:50Speaker 1: Cash been prancing up and down the studio knocking it
- 8:53Speaker 1: out at me on that one. I've got bruises all
- 8:55Speaker 1: over the place, right, Okay, moving on now, okay, if
- 9:01Speaker 1: you want to bring people's attention to your classes, so
- 9:05Speaker 1: really I'm going to hand it over to you until
- 9:08Speaker 1: the names of the classes that you're running, and then
- 9:11Speaker 1: we can go through them and you can tell me
- 9:12Speaker 1: all about them one at a time. So, awhere you go.
- 9:15Speaker 1: What's first?
- 9:16Speaker 2: Right? Yes, Well, basically tomorrow we have nine am kind
- 9:22Speaker 2: of get it all out of the basement class. So
- 9:24Speaker 2: this is based on the fact that everyone works differently. Now,
- 9:28Speaker 2: it's not just a nine to five world, is it anymore?
- 9:31Speaker 2: People work from home. They do different shifts, and I thought,
- 9:35Speaker 2: bring something to the club that is for people who
- 9:38Speaker 2: don't have the opportunity to come of an evening. And
- 9:42Speaker 2: by the time you get to Friday, quite a lot
- 9:44Speaker 2: of us suffering from a little bit of stress need
- 9:47Speaker 2: to come down there, get rid of some of it.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Do it with fitness release those good in dolphins. I mean,
- 9:53Speaker 2: I get everything out, so we get the battle, ropes out, ladders,
- 9:57Speaker 2: all of it.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Right, So it's basically a fitness class ladies only.
- 10:01Speaker 2: No, it's mixed.
- 10:02Speaker 1: It's mixed.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, so yeah, time to have a bit of
- 10:05Speaker 2: a go at the bag, right, said if anyone else
- 10:08Speaker 2: around you.
- 10:10Speaker 1: So that's on a Friday from nine nine till when
- 10:13Speaker 1: nine till ten, nine till ten, So that's an hour.
- 10:16Speaker 1: So and tell us whereabouts that is taking place?
- 10:19Speaker 2: Yep, So that's f fifty one on ton Time Street
- 10:22Speaker 2: at our boxing club there.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Right, Okay, so you're not the club is no longer
- 10:28Speaker 1: anything to do with the El Saint Mary's Social Club,
- 10:31Speaker 1: is it. No, it's completely completely moved out. Yeah. I
- 10:35Speaker 1: remember being at the opening day of f fifty one.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I came along and so I do remember having to
- 10:39Speaker 1: look around, and I've been back a couple of times.
- 10:41Speaker 1: So if you're thinking whereabouts and you drive by it,
- 10:45Speaker 1: I don't know if the sign is still there, but
- 10:47Speaker 1: there was used to be a big board outside the
- 10:49Speaker 1: social club. Don't go in there. Come down to the
- 10:51Speaker 1: top of ton Time Street, the f fifty one. Okay,
- 10:54Speaker 1: so that what do you call that club?
- 10:57Speaker 2: That's kind of a get it all out of the basement.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Get it all out of basement cloud? Right, and what
- 11:03Speaker 1: else have you got? What else do you do?
- 11:05Speaker 2: Right? Okay? Well, I'm working on a Wednesday fitness for lunch.
- 11:10Speaker 2: So basically that's on the basis that people in the
- 11:14Speaker 2: area sometimes again don't get that kind of time or
- 11:18Speaker 2: they only have the time before school pick up and think,
- 11:21Speaker 2: you know what can I fit in? Once I hit
- 11:23Speaker 2: this hamster wheel when the kids go out of school,
- 11:25Speaker 2: I can't do anything else. Yeah, come down. So that
- 11:29Speaker 2: session is more based around shadow boxing and abdominals, so
- 11:33Speaker 2: getting a bit of cardio, getting a bit of ad
- 11:36Speaker 2: work all over body, kind of Calisenics weightlifting.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Okay, So have you got a different levels that we
- 11:44Speaker 1: Supposing someone hears this tomorrow and thinks, you know, I
- 11:48Speaker 1: want to I want to want to have a go
- 11:50Speaker 1: next Wednesday. But do you have to have a chat
- 11:53Speaker 1: with them to say, well, look, you know, how is
- 11:56Speaker 1: your fitness? What have you done so far? Because you
- 11:57Speaker 1: don't want them to what can I says them too
- 12:00Speaker 1: much on the first week and then they don't come back.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Assessment That is the word I was looking for. Assessment.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Well basically what I'll do is when anyone
- 12:09Speaker 2: comes in, all I say basically, you know, work at
- 12:11Speaker 2: your own pace. You know your body, you know how
- 12:14Speaker 2: you feel. If there's any health ailments, anything to do
- 12:17Speaker 2: with your physical fitness, you need to tell me. Obviously
- 12:20Speaker 2: that's something I'll need to know. But go at your
- 12:23Speaker 2: own pace. You do what you can because it's all
- 12:25Speaker 2: about progression. It's all I want is for people to
- 12:28Speaker 2: get fitter using styles within the boxing fitness realm. That's
- 12:33Speaker 2: basically what the daytimes are all about.
- 12:36Speaker 1: So I've still got another couple of items down here,
- 12:39Speaker 1: but I want you to tell me what else you've
- 12:41Speaker 1: got up your sleeve.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Gone, okay, Well another idea I had was about the
- 12:45Speaker 2: shred club that they have in f fifty one. All
- 12:49Speaker 2: parents will know about this. I expect it's a small fee,
- 12:54Speaker 2: really small fee they pay for the entire year for
- 12:56Speaker 2: their kids to go there on school times after I
- 12:59Speaker 2: think it's up till about six o'clock something like that.
- 13:02Speaker 2: So I'm offering parents time to come in and have
- 13:05Speaker 2: their time. I mean, why sit there and write the
- 13:08Speaker 2: shopping list, you know, go and get the food, clean
- 13:11Speaker 2: the house. I mean, that's something you know, set aside,
- 13:14Speaker 2: so that.
- 13:15Speaker 1: There's a shred club. And what you're trying to do.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Trying to do is encourage the parents that bring the
- 13:20Speaker 1: children to the shread club instead of going home, come
- 13:23Speaker 1: and do some exercise in a gym.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Yeah, come in and you know, bring a friend, bring
- 13:27Speaker 2: a partner and whatever suits or if you want to
- 13:30Speaker 2: come on your own, you want your own headspace understandable. Yeah,
- 13:33Speaker 2: come in and we'll do some fitness. Will help you
- 13:36Speaker 2: feel better.
- 13:37Speaker 1: And what do you know what time this shread club is?
- 13:41Speaker 2: I believe it's from four until about six, four to six,
- 13:45Speaker 2: and I'm aiming for a Thursday.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Aiming for a Thursday. Okay, Well, we'll recap all these
- 13:50Speaker 1: before we go, so in case you're writing them down.
- 13:54Speaker 1: But the one I'm looking forward to is the next one,
- 13:56Speaker 1: which is the I've got down here girls boxing fitness.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Yes, well, we've started as of late last year a
- 14:04Speaker 2: girl's class from five till six within folks and amateur boxing,
- 14:09Speaker 2: and the class is slowly growing. We've got a really
- 14:12Speaker 2: really cool set of girls that are in there, but
- 14:14Speaker 2: we're always looking to have more. We're always looking to have,
- 14:18Speaker 2: you know, more girls in the town thinking, do you
- 14:20Speaker 2: know what I've seen fran Hennessy, I've seen Katie Taylor,
- 14:24Speaker 2: I've seen all these people. I really want to ever
- 14:25Speaker 2: go at that. I want to ever go at that.
- 14:27Speaker 2: And you know, when I was a girl, there wasn't
- 14:29Speaker 2: anything like this around and I would absolutely loved it.
- 14:32Speaker 2: So just reach out and get in touch with us.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Yep. So the other three classes are basically fitness. Have
- 14:39Speaker 1: I got this right? But this one is erring onto
- 14:42Speaker 1: the side of sort of boxing training. Is that right?
- 14:44Speaker 2: It is? It is? And obviously if they want to
- 14:47Speaker 2: do more technique than what's within my class, because there
- 14:50Speaker 2: only been me there on that one, you know, they
- 14:54Speaker 2: come to our other classes to improve and get fitter
- 14:58Speaker 2: and learn more about boxing teen technique because there's a
- 15:01Speaker 2: lot more of US coaches on the other classes. But
- 15:04Speaker 2: it's a great starting base for.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Girls who want to YEA. And so when when's this
- 15:08Speaker 1: take place?
- 15:09Speaker 2: That's on a Wednesday five till.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Six, Wednesday five to six, So we're going to recap
- 15:15Speaker 1: all these before we go. So, well, that's the four
- 15:18Speaker 1: that I've got down. Is there anything else you've got
- 15:20Speaker 1: up your sleeve that you want to tell us about?
- 15:22Speaker 2: Not really? Well? Yeah, I mean, you know, if anyone
- 15:27Speaker 2: also wants to come in the club on an afternoon
- 15:29Speaker 2: on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday and doesn't fancy a
- 15:33Speaker 2: class situation and thinks, do you know what, I want
- 15:36Speaker 2: to come down just with this friend or just with
- 15:38Speaker 2: this small group of friends and train can you fit
- 15:41Speaker 2: me in? Can we do it once or twice a week?
- 15:43Speaker 2: And the answer is yes, Yeah.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Something do you need? Do you need to have somebody experienced?
- 15:49Speaker 1: If a group of half a dozen lads who you
- 15:52Speaker 1: know they've perhaps been there before, do they need to
- 15:55Speaker 1: be supervised or have someone around or can they just
- 15:57Speaker 1: go go in and you know, sign out the equipment
- 16:01Speaker 1: and do it on their own?
- 16:03Speaker 2: They were a better do it on their own.
- 16:04Speaker 1: No, that's what I mean.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Yeah, only with one of us, right, that's only with
- 16:07Speaker 2: it's got to be one of the qualified coaches there, right, Yeah,
- 16:11Speaker 2: So if they wanted to come down, they just reach
- 16:13Speaker 2: out to us basically, right and yeah, come along.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Great, Okay, we're gonna have another little break. Then we're
- 16:19Speaker 1: gonna come back and we're going to recap some of
- 16:21Speaker 1: these things and we're going to find out if there's
- 16:23Speaker 1: anything else that CAF has left out or wants to
- 16:25Speaker 1: tell us. So this is another song. There's only two
- 16:28Speaker 1: songs in the playlist I could find about boxing, but
- 16:31Speaker 1: this is a classic one from nineteen sixty nine, Simon
- 16:34Speaker 1: a Gulf Uncle with the boxer I Am just a
- 16:43Speaker 1: poor boy, or my story is seldom tall live f
- 16:47Speaker 1: Li Resistance, going back in time to nineteen sixty nine.
- 17:03Speaker 1: So I'm going to go a fund called the Boxer. So, okay, Kath,
- 17:19Speaker 1: the time is racking on. I've got lots of other
- 17:22Speaker 1: sports to do, but I don't want to get rid
- 17:24Speaker 1: of you without recapping some of the very important things
- 17:27Speaker 1: we've been talking about. So let's first of all, before
- 17:29Speaker 1: we go on to recap the times and stuff like that.
- 17:32Speaker 1: I mean, the club. The boxing club has been going
- 17:35Speaker 1: a long time, and I've known the guys up there
- 17:37Speaker 1: for a number of years. But I think we need
- 17:42Speaker 1: to reassure that the parents of people of the children
- 17:47Speaker 1: that might be coming in that there's things like you've
- 17:50Speaker 1: been we've been talking off here, that you've been first
- 17:54Speaker 1: ay trained. That's very important, isn't it.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Yeah, it's very important. All of us down there are
- 17:59Speaker 2: safeguard training and first aid.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Yeah, so safeguarding is really every club now that sort
- 18:06Speaker 1: of comes through the door, has to have a safeguarding officer,
- 18:08Speaker 1: doesn't it. So you're looking out for the welfare of
- 18:11Speaker 1: the children and you know, you can perhaps see some
- 18:15Speaker 1: things that perhaps the parents can't see, but we you know,
- 18:18Speaker 1: you've got a duty of care to these kids. So
- 18:22Speaker 1: that kind of goes with every club now, which is
- 18:24Speaker 1: nice to know that the boxing club have got that
- 18:26Speaker 1: in place. So parents, if you're thinking of, you know,
- 18:29Speaker 1: sending your child down there, and we do know also
- 18:33Speaker 1: that all these guys have been a first day train
- 18:35Speaker 1: which is most important. So let's recap. We start with
- 18:39Speaker 1: the fitness for lunch.
- 18:40Speaker 2: When's that Okay, Well, that is something I want to
- 18:44Speaker 2: run from Wednesday and yeah, basically anyone who cannot fit
- 18:50Speaker 2: for what time anywhere else?
- 18:51Speaker 1: You say lunch. I mean, some people might have a
- 18:52Speaker 1: long lunch one.
- 18:54Speaker 2: O'clock, but if I get more people in the time
- 18:57Speaker 2: frame of thinking, well, two o'clock would be better for me,
- 19:00Speaker 2: and that's absolutely fine.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Okay, So that's fitness for lunch. I've got here the
- 19:04Speaker 1: Friday basement clear out. When does that happen?
- 19:07Speaker 2: That's nine o'clock on a Friday morning.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Right, Okay, And the next one I've got is, well,
- 19:12Speaker 1: we're pretty sure about the times on this. There's a
- 19:15Speaker 1: shred club that goes on up at f fifty one.
- 19:19Speaker 1: So what is the shred club that you're trying to promote?
- 19:23Speaker 2: Okay, So while the children are upstairs skating or you know,
- 19:27Speaker 2: BMX in whatever they're doing up there, then the parents
- 19:31Speaker 2: could come down to me and get a fitness session.
- 19:33Speaker 1: In, right, So that's when is that?
- 19:35Speaker 2: That's about four till six roughly on a Thursday.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Four till six on a Thursday. And the one for
- 19:43Speaker 1: the girls boxing fitness. First of all, the age group,
- 19:46Speaker 1: what ages are they?
- 19:47Speaker 2: Okay, well, I'm aiming at age thirteen to seventeen. Yeah,
- 19:51Speaker 2: because age seventeen upwards is our seniors sort of thing,
- 19:55Speaker 2: and you going to the ladies. Yeah, and when's they
- 19:57Speaker 2: That's on a Wednesday right now.
- 20:01Speaker 1: I mean people won't remember all that, I'm sure, but
- 20:04Speaker 1: if you're listening driving in your car and you think
- 20:07Speaker 1: I want to find out more about that when I
- 20:08Speaker 1: get home, how can they get some sort of visual
- 20:12Speaker 1: information on all these classes? Right?
- 20:14Speaker 2: Okay? So you can contact me directly on my Facebook
- 20:18Speaker 2: if you like Kathy Smith, or you know through Folks
- 20:23Speaker 2: and Amateur Boxing Club on Facebook or Folks in Boxing yeah,
- 20:28Speaker 2: or pop into a fifty.
- 20:29Speaker 1: One yeah fifty you've got all the details in there, yeah, yeah.
- 20:33Speaker 2: Yeah, we will work together as a team right there.
- 20:35Speaker 1: So that yeah, and I will point out, because I
- 20:37Speaker 1: did find this out that's myself this morning, that there
- 20:40Speaker 1: are actually two Facebook pages. One is the Folks and
- 20:42Speaker 1: Amateur Boxing Club, but there's also a Facebook page which
- 20:45Speaker 1: is a bit more up to date. It's the Folks
- 20:48Speaker 1: just Folks and Boxing Club, and that's the one with
- 20:51Speaker 1: all the pictures of all the classes. So look for
- 20:53Speaker 1: that now before we go. keV. I always think this
- 20:57Speaker 1: is really important because get where you are, you had
- 21:01Speaker 1: to have help. And first of all, is there any
- 21:03Speaker 1: hellos you want to say hello to? Have you got
- 21:05Speaker 1: back the dog at home or a budget or anything
- 21:07Speaker 1: anyone like that.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Oh, just say hello to my other after Steve Smith,
- 21:12Speaker 2: who's listening. Yeah and yeah to get me where I
- 21:16Speaker 2: am today. Basically, I wouldn't be doing this without the club,
- 21:20Speaker 2: without folks and them to boxing, without the you know,
- 21:23Speaker 2: the coaches there. They are really amazing giving people. So
- 21:27Speaker 2: say thank you to Harry Slater, to Barry, to Dean
- 21:33Speaker 2: to Pull to everyone there. Really Yeah, very supportive, bunch.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Good, excellent. It's good to hear it, and it's good
- 21:39Speaker 1: to hear that the boxing club is still thriving. I mean,
- 21:42Speaker 1: certainly the Alt Mary's the club was, I think it's
- 21:45Speaker 1: a dover road social club was a bit spit and sawdust.
- 21:49Speaker 1: But it's kind of a coming to the twenty first
- 21:52Speaker 1: century now down at the fifty one. But it's good
- 21:55Speaker 1: to see that the you know, the youngsters are still
- 21:59Speaker 1: coming in and it's not all about boxing. I think
- 22:01Speaker 1: the point we didn't make it is about fitness and
- 22:04Speaker 1: discipline as well, isn't it. So that's really important, isn't it. Yeah?
- 22:08Speaker 2: It is, and you know it can be a really
- 22:10Speaker 2: good stress release. You know, boxing has been proven to
- 22:14Speaker 2: be good for your mental health, you know, the fitness
- 22:17Speaker 2: behind it, confidence, all the things really, you know, so
- 22:22Speaker 2: anyone you know, feeling very little self worth. You know,
- 22:25Speaker 2: if you're getting yourself into fitness, come to one of
- 22:28Speaker 2: the clubs. You know it will do you the world
- 22:30Speaker 2: of good. It really will.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Okay, Cap, thanks for coming in. It's been so interesting
- 22:34Speaker 1: in talking to you, and it's like a breath of
- 22:35Speaker 1: fresh air. Actually, it's good to see that, you know.
- 22:39Speaker 1: I love it when coaches that are relatively new to
- 22:42Speaker 1: the sport come in and you're trying something different. You're
- 22:45Speaker 1: trying to generate interest and get the kids doing stuff.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Get them off the computers, get them off the older
- 22:52Speaker 1: phones and things like that, and get out do they
- 22:55Speaker 1: can't be a bit of exercise and like you say,
- 22:59Speaker 1: working off a bit of Kathy. Thanks for so.
- 23:01Speaker 2: Much, Thank you, thank you very much.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Right, Okay, we're going to move on now. Last week,
- 23:06Speaker 1: if you remember, it was Race for Life, and I
- 23:08Speaker 1: tried to find lots of songs with the word life
- 23:10Speaker 1: in it. Well, I was going to play this one
- 23:12Speaker 1: last week, so I'm going to play it today. This
- 23:14Speaker 1: is Rony Keaton and life is a roller coaster. That's
- 23:33Speaker 1: Rona Keaton there and I'm just going to fade him
- 23:35Speaker 1: down a little bit because that interview with Kath went on.
- 23:40Speaker 1: I don't mean that nastily. It did go on because
- 23:43Speaker 1: it was so interesting, That's what I meant. And it
- 23:45Speaker 1: often happens. The clock just runs away with us. So
- 23:48Speaker 1: I've got some other sports I want to want to
- 23:50Speaker 1: squeeze in, but this certainly won't take long. The cricket,
- 23:53Speaker 1: So let's go to last Sada's cricket results. There's no
- 23:59Speaker 1: results at all to read out because there was all
- 24:01Speaker 1: washed away. It was all abandoned due to the rain.
- 24:04Speaker 1: So no games for Folkston, Hawkins, High Hive Green, Saltwood
- 24:09Speaker 1: and Sipton Park. But now as I speak it looks
- 24:12Speaker 1: a bit brighter for Saturday. So here's a list of
- 24:15Speaker 1: the fixtures we've got. The Folks and first eleven are
- 24:18Speaker 1: at home to Canterbury. First eleven Hawkins are a way
- 24:22Speaker 1: to Sherwood the Cricket Club, which means a trip to
- 24:25Speaker 1: a Rochester Hi Ever at home to Faversham. Hive Green
- 24:29Speaker 1: are away to Warmer Second eleven. Saltwood First eleven are
- 24:33Speaker 1: at home to tenterd and second eleven and Sipton Park
- 24:36Speaker 1: are at home to Warmer first eleven, so let's really
- 24:41Speaker 1: hope that everything goes all right this Saturday. I expect
- 24:44Speaker 1: the guys are busting to get out there and get
- 24:47Speaker 1: that leather on willow and a bit of sunshine at
- 24:49Speaker 1: the weekend. Now, I was on the mic at Cancer
- 24:52Speaker 1: Research UK's Race for Life on the Leaves on Sunday
- 24:55Speaker 1: with the rain stayed away, but it was chilly and windy.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Nine hundred runners too. Part it's always a I don't know,
- 25:02Speaker 1: it's always a happy sad day really, you know, it's
- 25:06Speaker 1: happy having a bit of fun. Then we have a
- 25:08Speaker 1: moment's reflection and sadness. But then we turn it around
- 25:12Speaker 1: and we get the Joe the warm up. Lady Joe
- 25:15Speaker 1: once again she did a warm up which was really
- 25:18Speaker 1: really popular. All the fellas were joining in as well,
- 25:21Speaker 1: and the event raised a staggering one hundred and fifteen
- 25:25Speaker 1: thousand pounds towards the cause and when announced, it raised
- 25:29Speaker 1: a deafening cheer. Now, I asked the audience, who's there
- 25:33Speaker 1: for the first time? And many many runners put their
- 25:36Speaker 1: hands up, and I'm sure that they want to come back.
- 25:39Speaker 1: I mean, it's lovely to see so many friends and
- 25:41Speaker 1: cancer survivors, you know, back doing a run and former
- 25:45Speaker 1: guest of the show, Jay Hopkins was there. She's also
- 25:48Speaker 1: a cancer survivor. We followed her story. If you remember,
- 25:50Speaker 1: she came in with three of her lads and they
- 25:52Speaker 1: all did a skydive. That was amazing time that was
- 25:57Speaker 1: but she just felt that she had to come back
- 25:58Speaker 1: and do it, you know. So I want to thank
- 26:01Speaker 1: Sarah Jane winding the event, a manager, for putting it
- 26:05Speaker 1: all together. That really is a stressful job, especially on
- 26:08Speaker 1: the day. Try and talk to her. She's always on
- 26:12Speaker 1: the phone, always on the radio, internal mike, and she
- 26:18Speaker 1: does such a good job. I want to thank all
- 26:20Speaker 1: the volunteers that came along. Couldn't have done it without you.
- 26:23Speaker 1: There's a lot of police cadets there. They do it
- 26:25Speaker 1: because they have to do certain work in the community,
- 26:29Speaker 1: so they came along. They were very good, giving out medals,
- 26:31Speaker 1: giving out water. I want to thank two elite cyclists.
- 26:35Speaker 1: I want to thank Adam. He did bring another guy along.
- 26:38Speaker 1: I can't remember his name. I do apologize, so Adam
- 26:40Speaker 1: and your friend. And we want to thank the pacers.
- 26:43Speaker 1: They had them fifty sixty and seventy minute pacers. I
- 26:46Speaker 1: want to thank Vicky, Paul and Tanya all came together
- 26:50Speaker 1: on the day and that's what it's all about. Right.
- 26:54Speaker 1: We try and play a little bit of this one.
- 26:56Speaker 1: This is another song with the word life in it.
- 26:58Speaker 1: As we were talking about Race for Life. This is
- 27:01Speaker 1: Desiree and Life nineteen ninety eight to Desiree and Life.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Staying with the theme of life, they are Race for Life.
- 27:27Speaker 1: Last week, okay, moving swiftly on now last Sunday after
- 27:34Speaker 1: Race for Life. Actually when it was finished, I got
- 27:38Speaker 1: home at a quick shower and I was off to
- 27:40Speaker 1: the Master Brewer where I was a quiz master. Now
- 27:43Speaker 1: Martin and Rachel Murray plus joining Eve Morton, have entered
- 27:47Speaker 1: a team of four for a challenge in an event
- 27:49Speaker 1: called Race the Sun. It's taking place on the eleventh
- 27:52Speaker 1: July this year in the Cheddar Gulge region, which is
- 27:55Speaker 1: just south of Bristol. Their challenge is to bike ride
- 27:59Speaker 1: thirty two miles through the iconic Cheddar Gorge, then a
- 28:03Speaker 1: nine mile hike above the gorge and beyond, and to
- 28:07Speaker 1: finish off, the four of them will jump into a
- 28:09Speaker 1: four man kayak and paddle two miles along the sparkling
- 28:13Speaker 1: calm waters of the Cheddar Reservoir and the Marti reckons
- 28:17Speaker 1: it could take them eight or nine hours, so basically
- 28:20Speaker 1: a whole day shift. And when I asked them about
- 28:24Speaker 1: the kayak, I said, if you've done any kayak, any
- 28:26Speaker 1: sort of training, note you see, we'll just give it
- 28:28Speaker 1: a go on the day. Now, the four of them
- 28:31Speaker 1: have had to raise two thousand pounds for a charity
- 28:33Speaker 1: called Action and Medical Research. It's a charity that funds
- 28:37Speaker 1: research to prevent and treat disease and disability in babies
- 28:41Speaker 1: and children. So what a brilliant cause that's for. So
- 28:45Speaker 1: onto the quiz. Now there was a great happy, noisy
- 28:48Speaker 1: atmosphere as families could bring their children along and they
- 28:51Speaker 1: were kept busy in a mini quiz which involved color
- 28:54Speaker 1: in word searches and similar sort of things. And it
- 28:58Speaker 1: was a nice afternoon. As it was a nice afternoon,
- 29:00Speaker 1: it was nice and sunny, they could go out the
- 29:01Speaker 1: back and run around. There was eleven tables taking part
- 29:06Speaker 1: with seven rounds of various questions and a music bing
- 29:09Speaker 1: go round and it was nice to see a blend
- 29:11Speaker 1: of young and old people taking part. As a chrismaster,
- 29:15Speaker 1: the volume normally gets turned up round about half time.
- 29:18Speaker 1: It starts to get louder. It seems to be the
- 29:20Speaker 1: normal trait we quizes, and I was kind of expecting it,
- 29:23Speaker 1: so yeah, the volumer to go up. But there was
- 29:26Speaker 1: a great crowd and the afternoon produced at four hundred
- 29:29Speaker 1: and twenty pound. Now that is added to the twelve
- 29:32Speaker 1: hundred pound they've already raised towards their target of two thousand,
- 29:37Speaker 1: So we wish them well on the eleventh of July.
- 29:40Speaker 1: I don't know it might come off. We've got some
- 29:42Speaker 1: busy Saturdays coming up. But what I'd like to do
- 29:45Speaker 1: is try and get all four of them in and
- 29:47Speaker 1: to recap that day and tell us how it went.
- 29:51Speaker 1: So good luck to you a lot for the eleventh
- 29:54Speaker 1: of July. Now, last Saturday, Saturday in the afternoon, down
- 30:00Speaker 1: to the folks at Rugby Club for their very first
- 30:02Speaker 1: celebration day. Now, the idea was to bring all members
- 30:05Speaker 1: of the club together as coaches, spectators, male and female players,
- 30:10Speaker 1: youth team players, management, plus former players in fact, anybody
- 30:14Speaker 1: that's been involved with the club in the present and
- 30:17Speaker 1: the past. It was a drizzly afternoon and when I
- 30:20Speaker 1: turned up there was a touch rugby tournament in full flow.
- 30:25Speaker 1: And what I did notice, which is a real really
- 30:27Speaker 1: good thing, was that there were teams of mixed seniors
- 30:30Speaker 1: and juniors playing together against other teams of mixed seniors
- 30:34Speaker 1: and juniors. There was teams of ladies out there, and
- 30:37Speaker 1: the final was between the JVK Stupid Boys and the Superheroes,
- 30:42Speaker 1: with the Stupid Boys winning the kids in cup. Now
- 30:46Speaker 1: I charted to the men's captain, Callum Guy, the ladies
- 30:48Speaker 1: captain Shelley Osborne, and Director of Junior Rugby Lee Fichi,
- 30:53Speaker 1: with the intention of trying to get them all in
- 30:55Speaker 1: on a Saturday morning and if they can just recap
- 30:59Speaker 1: the whole season, I really need to get him in
- 31:01Speaker 1: before the season starts again, and then I would have
- 31:03Speaker 1: lost them. Now, the day was a huge success and
- 31:06Speaker 1: it was brought all the participants of the club together
- 31:10Speaker 1: and it was like a big community type of day
- 31:13Speaker 1: and the town of folks that must be very proud
- 31:15Speaker 1: of this very active club that looks after seniors and
- 31:19Speaker 1: juniors who love to play rugby. Right, so we're going
- 31:23Speaker 1: to squeeze another little song in then. Now I'll tell
- 31:25Speaker 1: you I'm going to do. I'm going to do a
- 31:27Speaker 1: bit more talking, because I do want to get this
- 31:29Speaker 1: in now. Yesterday I saw myself, along with Andy found
- 31:33Speaker 1: and Jane Hatton of the Ashford Striders visit the studios
- 31:37Speaker 1: of Radio Ashford to catch up with my old radio
- 31:40Speaker 1: buddy John Webbo Webster. Now the reason for the visit
- 31:43Speaker 1: was to promote the Striders and chat about Friday. That's
- 31:47Speaker 1: tomorrow's charing ten k Now there's two races. The senior
- 31:52Speaker 1: race starts at seven o'clock with a fun run at
- 31:54Speaker 1: six point fifteen. For further information, visit the race event
- 31:58Speaker 1: company nice work dot org dot UK. Now, the race
- 32:03Speaker 1: as of yesterday was nearly sold out, so I'll be
- 32:06Speaker 1: quick if you want to enter now. It was great
- 32:08Speaker 1: catching up with Webbo, who has his own breakfast show
- 32:12Speaker 1: on Radio Ashford and he just knows about just about
- 32:15Speaker 1: everybody that lives in Ashford. Now we work together and
- 32:18Speaker 1: he told me it was fifteen years ago that we
- 32:20Speaker 1: departed from a certain radio station in Kent that has
- 32:23Speaker 1: four initials, but we don't like to mention their name anyway.
- 32:27Speaker 1: It's really good that Radio Focused and Radio Ashford can
- 32:30Speaker 1: work together, both community stations with the interests of local
- 32:34Speaker 1: people at heart. So there we go. It was a
- 32:36Speaker 1: brilliant It was great to see him. I've been up
- 32:39Speaker 1: there a few times with different running clubs or promoting
- 32:43Speaker 1: different events in Ashford. Webbo is so enthusiastic about what
- 32:47Speaker 1: he does, and like I say, he is a mister Ashford. Right,
- 32:51Speaker 1: we're going to turn the clock back with another life song.
- 32:54Speaker 1: This was from nineteen sixty six Cliff Bennet and the
- 32:57Speaker 1: Rebel Rousers and got to Get You to My Life?
- 33:08Speaker 2: I want along, I took around I don't Know what
- 33:10Speaker 2: I want to buy?
- 33:13Speaker 1: From nineteen sixty six Cliff One and the Rebel Rouser's
- 33:16Speaker 1: got to Get You Into My Life And that was
- 33:19Speaker 1: a cover of the Beatles song. And you know it's
- 33:22Speaker 1: not often I say this, but that was a cover
- 33:24Speaker 1: version that I prefer to the original. Oh I'm going
- 33:27Speaker 1: to get shot down in flames for that, and away
- 33:29Speaker 1: we're going to jump from nineteen sixty six to ninety
- 33:32Speaker 1: ninety three. This is the last song of the day.
- 33:34Speaker 1: This is Phil Collins and both sides of the story.
- 33:49Speaker 1: We'll just pad that one day on as we are
- 33:51Speaker 1: really running out of time. And that's it from me.
- 33:54Speaker 1: I'll be back on my own Saturday. For the next
- 33:56Speaker 1: few weeks as eighties on holiday, but this week I'm
- 33:59Speaker 1: hoping to be join that they might be putting signs out.
- 34:01Speaker 1: I'm not sure. Members of the Rashburg family who are
- 34:05Speaker 1: the brains behind the cliff Top Challenge as Chantelle, Phil
- 34:08Speaker 1: and Lily. The challenge is. The challenge has raised one
- 34:11Speaker 1: thousands of pounds for breast Cancer Now and it's a
- 34:14Speaker 1: trial race running through Folkston ending up in Deal and
- 34:19Speaker 1: it happens on Saturday, the twentieth of June. So join
- 34:22Speaker 1: me on Radio Folkston on Saturday ten to eleven
