SPEAKER_03: How did you get started in journalism?

SPEAKER_05: Well, I think like a lot of sports journalists, I was sort of like a failed athlete, right?

SPEAKER_05: I was like a B minus high school player in all the sports that I played.

SPEAKER_05: So got to college, I went to Michigan State.

SPEAKER_05: So obviously, you know, that's a high octane place.

SPEAKER_05: You're not gonna play sports there unless you know what you're doing.

SPEAKER_05: So I said, how can I stay in this?

SPEAKER_05: Got into journalism, worked at the school paper there, and just like fell in love with it, getting to cover these games, you know, these Michigan, Michigan State games, and we just fell in love with it.

SPEAKER_05: And so that was my way to stay in the game, um, even though I wasn't uh, you know, good enough to play.

SPEAKER_05: So you're just Michigan only back then?

SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I lived in Michigan my whole life.

SPEAKER_05: Uh went to Michigan State, worked at some newspapers in Michigan after I graduated, and then in 2003, so 23 years ago now, I moved out here in the desert.

SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I take it as a badge of honor, but it's fun to it's just fun to have that interaction.

SPEAKER_04: You've seen it from probably the old DVL day days where everybody's in the DVL, and then it kind of broke up there for a while.

SPEAKER_05: Yeah, remember the De Anza League sort of cut it in half a little bit, and then yeah, there's a lot of people moving around.

SPEAKER_05: It is kind of funny to think about all the different you know iterations we've had since I've been here.

SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you've seen it, you've seen it all the way through, but now we're coming back together.

SPEAKER_04: The Desert Athletic Conference, the D A C, which is still hard for me to pronounce.

SPEAKER_04: We've kind of in our first season, we haven't seen the full you know result of it, but what so far, what do you what are your opinions on that?

SPEAKER_05: I mean, I'm kind of a big fan, I gotta be honest.

SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, in football, it's it's not having a huge factor because you know the DEL teams are all still the same this year.

SPEAKER_05: Um, but I think it's gonna be fun to watch that change over the years.

SPEAKER_05: I've liked the shuffling that happened for the uh Sun Valley and the DVL in football.

SPEAKER_05: I think that's created two very equal leagues that I like.

SPEAKER_05: Um and I, you know, we broaden out to all the sports.

SPEAKER_05: I really think that's neat too.

SPEAKER_05: I've been, you know, you've got follow volleyball right now, let's say.

SPEAKER_05: You've got Indio and CV up in the DEL going against Xavier in Palm Desert, and it's kind of fun to see that that stuff too.

SPEAKER_05: You know, we're gonna see people go backwards.

SPEAKER_05: That you know will be surprising, and it'll be fun to see how that you know sort of develops moving forward.

SPEAKER_05: You think of uh the team I think of is Yucca Valley, I think nine of their ten games are against other desert teams.

SPEAKER_05: Um, so I'm a fan so far.

SPEAKER_05: I think we'll see after years and years how it kind of works with the moving around more, but I think I think it's gonna be popular.

SPEAKER_03: Every year they're just gonna rebalance it and it's always gonna be tough.

SPEAKER_03: It was tough before, but I think it's gonna get even more tougher with this setup.

SPEAKER_05: Like if you think of uh maybe there's a team struggling in the DEL right now, maybe next year they'll be one of the top teams in DVL, get their feet under them, move back up the DEL.

SPEAKER_05: You know, it's kind of it'll be interesting like that, I think.

SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, it'll be interesting to see who that first regular who's regulated first.

SPEAKER_04: Um, the DEL and the DVL, we think that the gap's kind of shrinking now.

SPEAKER_04: It used to be DEL was way up here, yeah, and everybody else D VL and some value were way down here.

SPEAKER_04: But as Desert Hot Springs has kind of already proven, yes, um, Yucca proved this week.

SPEAKER_04: I mean, the DVL is not that far away from the DEL, at least the the the bottom half of that division.

SPEAKER_05: That if you um take teams sort of like three through eight in the desert, they're all you can throw a you know, throw a blanket over them, they're all pretty much the same.

SPEAKER_05: And this is you know, and these are not vintage Cotella Valley and Yucca Valley teams.

SPEAKER_05: So if you think of those teams from the past couple years, if they were going now, be even more so.

SPEAKER_05: So I think um, yeah, I love that DVL, you know, that all all all teams that made the playoffs last year, and really that's gonna almost be how it always is, because they're always gonna be, you know, DVL, uh teams that moved up from the Sun Valley.

SPEAKER_05: So that'll be kind of neat.

SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, uh I've been so impressed, you know, if we're talking about teams that have um exceeded my expectations, certainly Desert Hot Springs is at the top of the list.

SPEAKER_05: I was worried that they would be um sort of one of the teams that was, you know, had the least benefit from the shakeup moving out of the Sun Valley League, where they certainly would have made the playoffs to the DVL where it was going to be dubious.

SPEAKER_05: But boy, they're playing some good football.

SPEAKER_05: I just like what they're doing over there.

SPEAKER_04: What are some of the storylines you're kind of surprised of or you're following for the rest of the year?

SPEAKER_05: I mean, there's a lot of, you know, yeah, there's a lot of fun things going on.

SPEAKER_05: I mean, obviously, it's hard not to talk about Desert Christian, of course.

SPEAKER_05: That's fun, but I mean, we knew they'd be good.

SPEAKER_05: Um, I was so excited to see them play like a Yucca Valley and see what that was really like.

SPEAKER_05: Well, we saw what it was like.

SPEAKER_05: That was impressive.

SPEAKER_05: We were all at that game, and it was just like, man, you know, you knew you figured they might be able to score, but boy, I'm really impressed that they're able to stop teams like that, of that size.

SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, so I'm you know, there's no reason not to be all in on Desert Christian.

SPEAKER_05: It's fun to have that sort of conversation in your head of, you know, what would it be like if they played like Inta or Palm Desert?

SPEAKER_05: That'll be very that's kind of a fascinating storyline to see where Desert Christian is in the playoffs.

SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they actually jumped up two spots.

SPEAKER_05: They were they were in the league exactly like the Desert Athletic Conference last year.

SPEAKER_05: But if you want to put it in DAC terms, they were in the Sun Valley League and they moved all the way up to the DEL.

SPEAKER_05: So they jumped that middle spot.

SPEAKER_05: So now they're up against the big boys of that league.

SPEAKER_05: So they might, you know, it's possible they might suffer a league loss here or there, but I think they'll win enough to make the playoffs, certainly, and then we'll see what happens.

SPEAKER_05: And the way they're playing it, maybe they won't get a heavy league loss.

SPEAKER_05: What's been impressive too to me is like, you know, we knew about their studs, but I like a lot of their um, you know, other guys too.

SPEAKER_05: They've got like uh, you know, these like a like that Nath Daniel Guerrero.

SPEAKER_05: Some of the guys you maybe didn't know about coming into the year.

SPEAKER_05: And I was interested to see how J Von Garcia would mix in with them.

SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, Coach Dockery has got Indio playing pretty well, certainly better than they have in recent years.

SPEAKER_05: Shadow Hills is the team that's kind of like I just don't know much what to believe about them right now.

SPEAKER_05: You know, I I'm surprised that their offense hasn't been better, but I, you know, I know it's tricky, but you know, if they rolled into the league and won a couple games, it wouldn't surprise me.

SPEAKER_05: You know, we'll see what we'll give him a we'll give them a uh a free pass on some of the early games, but they gotta figure out how to win close games, I guess.
