- 0:01Speaker 1: And now, ladies and gentlemen, the Sobros Network proudly brings
- 0:06Speaker 1: to you some in depth movie discussion with our resident
- 0:10Speaker 1: film critic, Brandon.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Vic Happy evening, everyone, The vix Flicks Podcast is here. Welcome, Welcome,
- 0:33Speaker 2: Welcome to another episode of the vix Flicks Podcast right
- 0:37Speaker 2: here on National Movie Dispatch. I'm your host, Sir Brandon Vick,
- 0:41Speaker 2: a member of the Southeastern Filmcare Association and a board
- 0:44Speaker 2: member of the Music City Film Critics Association. And today
- 0:50Speaker 2: we're talking Project Hail Mary, I think one of the
- 0:55Speaker 2: finest films of twenty twenty six so far. And boy
- 0:59Speaker 2: do I have a special guest. It's obb our buddy
- 1:05Speaker 2: Brett is here with us live to start talking about this. Brett,
- 1:10Speaker 2: how are you doing?
- 1:11Speaker 3: I'm good? How are you? Oh?
- 1:14Speaker 2: Thanks for asking. I had to put a playground together
- 1:18Speaker 2: for my son.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Tell me more about that.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Well, my father in law told me it was going
- 1:22Speaker 2: to be two and a half hours, and that was
- 1:25Speaker 2: around nine fourteen in the morning. When I left to
- 1:32Speaker 2: do the show. It was at four four and we
- 1:38Speaker 2: were just the slide was being put up, which was
- 1:40Speaker 2: the last piece. So anybody that's good with math, Yeah,
- 1:45Speaker 2: from nine to something in the morning to four something
- 1:48Speaker 2: in the afternoon. People got sun burnt, people got mad.
- 1:55Speaker 2: My son had a field day. He didn't care. Yeah,
- 1:57Speaker 2: he was running around with the drill, he had drill
- 1:59Speaker 2: bits in his mouth. He was having a fun time.
- 2:02Speaker 2: And I don't know shit about tools, So what do
- 2:04Speaker 2: I know if he is having if he's not allowed
- 2:07Speaker 2: to have that or Yeah, my father in law yelled
- 2:10Speaker 2: at me twice because I wouldn't lock the drill into
- 2:12Speaker 2: the drill bit to drill down. So I just basically
- 2:16Speaker 2: all that silver dust was fine enough.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Is that the grown up version of like your dad
- 2:21Speaker 3: telling you to hold a flashlight in place? And you know, yes?
- 2:24Speaker 2: And I said, yes, yes, I saw someone, Yeah I
- 2:27Speaker 2: saw a thing about that on social media. Yes, yeah,
- 2:30Speaker 2: And I remember my father in law was like, is
- 2:32Speaker 2: that why you only had one kid? And I'm like,
- 2:34Speaker 2: I guess, but but here's the thing. Maybe it skipped
- 2:37Speaker 2: me and it goes to him. I don't know, because
- 2:39Speaker 2: my dad is is very handy.
- 2:42Speaker 3: We we put together a place for our kids some
- 2:45Speaker 3: years ago and it was a.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Similar playground, like a swing set type thing.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Yes, slide swings, a little climbing thing that's it. It
- 2:54Speaker 3: took I think it took us two days, so you
- 2:56Speaker 3: beat me. Really, it took a long time. And then
- 3:00Speaker 3: in a tornado came through in a limb smashed it.
- 3:03Speaker 3: So there is there is hope.
- 3:05Speaker 2: I would be so pissed. This week is supposed to
- 3:08Speaker 2: be nice. I'm like, oh, this is a good week,
- 3:10Speaker 2: but like it's only like eighty degrees here in Tennessee.
- 3:14Speaker 2: But I'm like over in like the corner of my porch,
- 3:17Speaker 2: like pouring bottles of water on my head, like are
- 3:19Speaker 2: you guys okay, like I'm drowning.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Yes, it's too hot already.
- 3:24Speaker 2: My sister in law and my wife helped me push
- 3:26Speaker 2: the box from our dining room into the out to
- 3:29Speaker 2: the deck and I had to lay down for ten
- 3:31Speaker 2: minutes and nice my legs.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Well, it's good to know your limits.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, And my wife was calling me, I've never
- 3:38Speaker 2: heard this a pansy. I'm not sure what it meant,
- 3:40Speaker 2: but she was screaming that at me. Anyway, it's fixed,
- 3:44Speaker 2: it's great. He was already swinging on it and stuff.
- 3:46Speaker 2: So we're looking forward to it anyway. Project till Mary.
- 3:49Speaker 2: So first of all, let me just set the scene
- 3:51Speaker 2: here Brett, his wife and myself all went to see
- 3:57Speaker 2: this in imax in seventy millimeters a week and a
- 4:01Speaker 2: half ago. Yes, and Droopy told you had troubles with
- 4:06Speaker 2: the Regal Cinemas app so instead of sitting next to
- 4:09Speaker 2: each other, you sat behind me. But that was fine
- 4:11Speaker 2: because I sat with other fun people and and it
- 4:18Speaker 2: was awesome. I mean, I've seen people say like, hey, listen,
- 4:22Speaker 2: see it on the biggest ring possible. That's real, that's legit.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Let's start off with, oh, well, let me hold on
- 4:29Speaker 2: one sec. You listened to the book, yes, by Andy Weir.
- 4:33Speaker 3: I read part of it. Give me like a tenth
- 4:35Speaker 3: of credit for that.
- 4:37Speaker 2: What page did you end on?
- 4:40Speaker 3: I read? It was on the kindle? So do I
- 4:42Speaker 3: get less credit for?
- 4:43Speaker 2: God? No, No, you don't know. Let's just say you
- 4:47Speaker 2: listen to it. Okay, all right, fine, you listen to it.
- 4:50Speaker 2: I had the book, I touched the pages.
- 4:53Speaker 3: I would lick my thumb like just skim like Betsy Ross.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Yes, okay, skim through.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Yeah, okay.
- 5:01Speaker 2: So we went in already knowing the story, and I
- 5:04Speaker 2: have I rarely have done that. I've done that for
- 5:06Speaker 2: a few films, which we'll get into but actually did
- 5:08Speaker 2: this for Andy Wear's other book, The Martian before I
- 5:13Speaker 2: went to see it Matt Damon, directed by Willie Scott.
- 5:15Speaker 2: But project hell Mary just initial thoughts.
- 5:20Speaker 3: So I liked the book a lot and I loved
- 5:24Speaker 3: the movie. I My day job is editing, and I
- 5:30Speaker 3: thought this was a master class in editing to translate
- 5:34Speaker 3: from the page to the screen.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Would you say this is one of like the elite
- 5:42Speaker 2: sci fi movies?
- 5:45Speaker 3: I think so. I've seen it twice now, yeah, so.
- 5:47Speaker 2: See you've actually seen it twice because you took your
- 5:50Speaker 2: kids to it just the other day.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Because yeah, and I will say the seventy millimeter, the IMAX,
- 5:58Speaker 3: it makes a differences.
- 5:59Speaker 2: A people understand. Like within the movie there are there
- 6:03Speaker 2: are flashbacks of sorts that where the aspect ratio changes,
- 6:09Speaker 2: and when it's in space, it is like a full
- 6:12Speaker 2: on seventy millimeter full picture and it's gorgeous all. I mean,
- 6:19Speaker 2: there's not a scene in there which we'll get cinematography
- 6:21Speaker 2: here in a little bit. It's it's phenomenal.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Yes, and it does that in the standard showing as well,
- 6:30Speaker 3: But there's so such small room for it to expand
- 6:34Speaker 3: that I was watching for it it does happen, but
- 6:38Speaker 3: it's just not the same as on the IMAX. So
- 6:41Speaker 3: certainly recommend that if it's available near you and you're
- 6:45Speaker 3: able to go.
- 6:46Speaker 2: In my notes, I have suck at Spielberg, suck at Kubrick,
- 6:52Speaker 2: suck it Nolan, and suck it Ridley Scorn. Yeah, this
- 6:56Speaker 2: is the best sci fi film I've ever seen in
- 6:59Speaker 2: my entire life. I'm kind of kidding, but it does well.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Say inspirations e T I think is one of probably
- 7:09Speaker 2: the first thing we kind of think about. There is
- 7:13Speaker 2: a part where when he's kind of communicating, right, Doctor
- 7:19Speaker 2: Grace played by Ryan Gosling is communicating and he uses
- 7:23Speaker 2: the theme of Close Encounters of the three time yep.
- 7:26Speaker 2: And I think there's also some some two thousand and
- 7:29Speaker 2: one space honesty stuff in there. So the one thing
- 7:32Speaker 2: I liked is that it's it wears that's on it.
- 7:35Speaker 2: It whears that kind of inspirations admirations for what's come
- 7:39Speaker 2: before it on its sleeve. I don't think it fully
- 7:42Speaker 2: relies on it. I don't think it takes any shortcuts
- 7:45Speaker 2: on it. But it's also very self aware, knows what
- 7:51Speaker 2: it is, knows that it's whose shoulders are standing on,
- 7:57Speaker 2: but it still makes such spectacular odyssey and it's such
- 8:04Speaker 2: a great story, and it really is kind of comes down.
- 8:09Speaker 2: I think I found it very hopeful, And I know
- 8:12Speaker 2: Ryan Gossling has talked about how like it seems like
- 8:15Speaker 2: a lot of these sci fi things is kind of
- 8:16Speaker 2: a doomsday type perspective, but Andy Weir is not like that,
- 8:20Speaker 2: and so it's nice to see that we're like, the
- 8:25Speaker 2: impossible is possible. Humans can get shipped, right, they can
- 8:30Speaker 2: do it. I've seen where a lot of people have
- 8:33Speaker 2: liked the most unbelievable thing of this whole movie that
- 8:37Speaker 2: that is the most fake is that other countries working together.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, but sadly so.
- 8:43Speaker 2: But I love I love that outlook, and I love
- 8:46Speaker 2: that it is kind of and Ryan Gossling has said
- 8:50Speaker 2: like he didn't really feel like there was a movie
- 8:51Speaker 2: out there that sort of like the et type thing
- 8:54Speaker 2: that like for them and like for his daughters for instance,
- 8:58Speaker 2: And I'm like, you know what, that that's a great point.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Like I didn't really think about it while I was
- 9:03Speaker 2: watching it, because I have seen those movies, and I
- 9:06Speaker 2: have seen some pretty great sci fi space movies. But
- 9:13Speaker 2: but what Project hel Mary is able to do is
- 9:18Speaker 2: pretty astonishing.
- 9:20Speaker 3: I think, Yeah, this is a tidbit that I got.
- 9:23Speaker 3: This was on Lord and Miller were on the Big
- 9:27Speaker 3: Picture podcast, which we're both fans of.
- 9:30Speaker 2: I do listen to it, and I actually just listened
- 9:32Speaker 2: to that like a few days ago. I didn't see
- 9:34Speaker 2: the interview though.
- 9:35Speaker 3: One thing that they said was that the movie is
- 9:39Speaker 3: built like a PC, not a MAC, as in, not
- 9:43Speaker 3: the sleekness, not everything's perfect. They talk they they kind
- 9:48Speaker 3: of say the parts are on the outside of this
- 9:50Speaker 3: and I think some of that what you're saying, even
- 9:53Speaker 3: using the Close Encounters theme as part of that or
- 9:57Speaker 3: the tone from that there show their adoration for that.
- 10:01Speaker 3: They're not saying this right, yes, And I think that
- 10:07Speaker 3: really adds to it, that it is kind of here
- 10:10Speaker 3: is this generation. We love all these movies, and here's
- 10:13Speaker 3: this generation's version of something like that.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Well you're talking about So there's Chris Miller, Phil Lord.
- 10:20Speaker 2: They are the directors of this. This is their first
- 10:22Speaker 2: directing gig in almost a decade. Their last movie they
- 10:25Speaker 2: directed was twenty two Jump Street. They have multiple in
- 10:31Speaker 2: Lego movie and in the Spider Verse movies. So and
- 10:35Speaker 2: I think Project Hill Mary really fits into what their
- 10:40Speaker 2: type of storytelling is or type of filmmaking I've seen
- 10:45Speaker 2: where they A lot of people have said, and I
- 10:47Speaker 2: think I would tend to agree, is that it was
- 10:49Speaker 2: a blessing that got fired from the solo movie where
- 10:52Speaker 2: Ron Howard ended up taking over, because I think they
- 10:55Speaker 2: were able to come up with something like this, and
- 10:58Speaker 2: they were able to adapt this story to the way
- 11:02Speaker 2: that they want to tell the story, but also the
- 11:04Speaker 2: way they see the world with their humor. But there's
- 11:07Speaker 2: also I mean, there's a lot of emotional moments in
- 11:09Speaker 2: this and if you've read the book, I mean it.
- 11:12Speaker 2: I mean it's there and Ryan Gosling squeezing out them tears.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Well, and it feels like it hits some of those
- 11:19Speaker 3: emotional moments even better than the book.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, and I think so speaking of the book,
- 11:29Speaker 2: we have both read slash Lition listened to it. So
- 11:33Speaker 2: would you say, how would you compare the film to
- 11:38Speaker 2: the book? I guess is the main thing. I think
- 11:41Speaker 2: the I think the one thing that you and I
- 11:42Speaker 2: talked about as soon as the movie was over is
- 11:44Speaker 2: that in the book there is a lot of science
- 11:47Speaker 2: jargon that is very confusing to normal people. They cut
- 11:53Speaker 2: it back in the movie, they kind of get back
- 11:55Speaker 2: to the basics, make you understand it, because it's a
- 11:59Speaker 2: it's a pivot, little part, but it's not the most
- 12:03Speaker 2: You don't have to know every detail of it in
- 12:07Speaker 2: order to kind of go on this journey and ride
- 12:11Speaker 2: this emotional ride. So how what what else would you
- 12:15Speaker 2: say as far as just just compared to the book
- 12:18Speaker 2: and the overall kind of satisfaction of reading it and
- 12:22Speaker 2: seeing it adapted to put on screen.
- 12:25Speaker 3: Yeah, the on that piece about the science we were talking,
- 12:28Speaker 3: My youngest son is seven, and I took him, and
- 12:31Speaker 3: the movie is cut in such a way that he
- 12:35Speaker 3: could follow the big story of what was happening. Surely
- 12:38Speaker 3: not every science experiment they do along the way and
- 12:41Speaker 3: that kind of thing, but he knows the plot of
- 12:45Speaker 3: what's what's happening and and and I think that's one
- 12:48Speaker 3: of going back to They made all the right cuts
- 12:51Speaker 3: for it to go to the big screen. One other
- 12:54Speaker 3: thing is that it's a funnier movie than it is
- 12:56Speaker 3: a book, and it's a It's got humor in the
- 12:58Speaker 3: book for sure, but it.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Definitely plays this part in the way, especially the way
- 13:03Speaker 2: Grace and Rocky interact and kind of grace just as
- 13:06Speaker 2: you know, personality and his perspective on kind of who
- 13:09Speaker 2: he is and the significance in the role that he's
- 13:13Speaker 2: playing in this kind of saving the world type stuff.
- 13:17Speaker 2: And I think that's where Lord and Miller kind of
- 13:19Speaker 2: come in and really kind of inject that into it.
- 13:22Speaker 2: And you also have someone like Ryan Gosling who's very
- 13:25Speaker 2: much aware of how of how to do that, but
- 13:28Speaker 2: not so much where you kind of lose hope in
- 13:31Speaker 2: kind of this. He is a hero of sorts, but
- 13:34Speaker 2: it's not that stoic hero that we're used to and
- 13:37Speaker 2: that and Gosling is it you know he has played before,
- 13:40Speaker 2: This is not it. There is doubt, there is confusion.
- 13:43Speaker 3: There is fear, yes, and yes, you know, I'm not
- 13:49Speaker 3: to send strays at The Fall Guy during this podcast,
- 13:52Speaker 3: but I felt like with The Fall Guy they didn't
- 13:55Speaker 3: get everything out of him that you can. There's something
- 13:59Speaker 3: just missing, and this movie gets it all out of him.
- 14:04Speaker 2: I think there's things where like Barbie certainly gets a
- 14:09Speaker 2: chunk of it, but I don't know if anything has
- 14:11Speaker 2: ever drawn on everything that Gosling can bring to a character,
- 14:19Speaker 2: then this has and I think that's why he's getting
- 14:21Speaker 2: a lot of a lot of credit for what he's
- 14:24Speaker 2: being able to do for a middle school teacher ends
- 14:26Speaker 2: up becoming this, you know, this unsuspecting hero. But it works,
- 14:33Speaker 2: and and all of them, there's so much that relies
- 14:37Speaker 2: on Goslin, Like if it doesn't work with him, the
- 14:41Speaker 2: movie just doesn't work. I mean there's there's there are
- 14:45Speaker 2: times where it's kind of like, hey, you know, like
- 14:48Speaker 2: I think of like Castaway. If Tom Hanks can't carry
- 14:51Speaker 2: that movie, that movie's dead in the water, yep. And
- 14:53Speaker 2: I think this is a case for that too. Now.
- 14:56Speaker 3: Well, and from the start it's almost I mean there's
- 14:58Speaker 3: almost like silent act for the first twenty minutes or so.
- 15:02Speaker 3: You know, there's bits and pieces of him kind of
- 15:04Speaker 3: blurting things out, but Tiger himself and he has to
- 15:08Speaker 3: wordlessly figure out to some degree where he is, why
- 15:11Speaker 3: is there and all of that.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Yeah, So before we get to Ruyan Gossling's performance, is
- 15:18Speaker 2: there anything else in the book just overall that? And
- 15:22Speaker 2: we're going to get to it because I know you
- 15:23Speaker 2: and I did talk about the ending of the book,
- 15:25Speaker 2: the ending of the film, stuff like that, But anything
- 15:29Speaker 2: more comedy obviously, I think, and we'll get to and
- 15:32Speaker 2: we'll kind of dive a little bit into this, but
- 15:36Speaker 2: they really nail home that Rocky and Grace relationship and
- 15:40Speaker 2: if and again, I also think that's something that's very
- 15:43Speaker 2: instrumental in having this film work, because if you don't,
- 15:46Speaker 2: if you don't feel for Grace and basically these just
- 15:51Speaker 2: stack of rocks, it doesn't work. But it does. And
- 15:57Speaker 2: there are a couple parts where I told you, I'm like,
- 16:00Speaker 2: you're kind of reframing from going in because they are
- 16:03Speaker 2: friends and they're trying to get they want the same thing.
- 16:08Speaker 2: But what are the odds of them coming, you know,
- 16:11Speaker 2: coming together and be able to figure to figure out
- 16:14Speaker 2: the world's problems. But anything else stick out.
- 16:19Speaker 3: I think the biggest thing is I think the biggest
- 16:23Speaker 3: thing is just the decisions they made where they cut.
- 16:27Speaker 3: That is usually for fans of a book, that is
- 16:29Speaker 3: usually the bugaboo of a movie is that they say, well,
- 16:33Speaker 3: what about this, This doesn't work as well without this
- 16:36Speaker 3: piece in the book.
- 16:37Speaker 2: I haven't heard bugaboo. I think since I was moving twenty.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Yes, yes, good, good, and but for this movie, I
- 16:44Speaker 3: really think it's it's a strong side of the movie
- 16:48Speaker 3: is the places where they cut some things, the places
- 16:51Speaker 3: where they just in the slightest way kind of tweaked
- 16:54Speaker 3: the story to change to kind of get from point
- 16:57Speaker 3: A to point B faster.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:59Speaker 3: I think it all works and it was all helpful
- 17:04Speaker 3: for what they needed for the movie.
- 17:05Speaker 2: I agree. So this blew my mind. And Ryan Gosling,
- 17:10Speaker 2: I've gone on YouTube and just watch random interviews of him,
- 17:12Speaker 2: and also let me tell you something. His cardigan game is.
- 17:18Speaker 2: It's top notch.
- 17:20Speaker 3: We've talked about this with Henry Cavill. But he's a
- 17:22Speaker 3: handsome man, Ryan Gosling, they both are, and you know.
- 17:25Speaker 2: What, And I guess because I'm a guy that's just
- 17:27Speaker 2: trying to keep the hair that I have. But his
- 17:29Speaker 2: hair is quite phenomenal. And it's like he's kind of
- 17:32Speaker 2: gone from Barbie even to fall Guy into now like
- 17:36Speaker 2: there is something about the style.
- 17:39Speaker 3: It's getting better.
- 17:40Speaker 2: It's sort of eighties. Yeah, but it it works, Like
- 17:44Speaker 2: I can tell that they try to do stuff in
- 17:45Speaker 2: the back just as much as they do in the front. Yeah,
- 17:48Speaker 2: it's but also can I say Ryan goss seems like
- 17:50Speaker 2: a very sweet man. He does, and he is. I
- 17:53Speaker 2: think he's married to Ava Mendez. Yes, two girls. Yeah,
- 17:57Speaker 2: they keep it very private. Which he did do a
- 17:59Speaker 2: thing on Jimmy Founder about her birthday, which I think
- 18:01Speaker 2: was kind of surprising to a lot of people because
- 18:03Speaker 2: they don't they're not on the red carpet with him
- 18:05Speaker 2: and stuff, and obviously that's very intentional, but it just
- 18:10Speaker 2: seems like he has his shit together, and you know,
- 18:12Speaker 2: he's starting to Mickey Mouse Club and stuff. And I
- 18:14Speaker 2: mean it's not like he hasn't been acting forever, but
- 18:16Speaker 2: he really seems to just know what's important. But his
- 18:20Speaker 2: sense of humor to whoever is interviewing him makes you
- 18:23Speaker 2: feel like you could just hang out with him. And
- 18:27Speaker 2: there's no like stardom there, even though he's definitely an
- 18:30Speaker 2: A list. I mean, he's going to get an Oscar. Yeah,
- 18:34Speaker 2: it may not be for this, even though if he's
- 18:36Speaker 2: for Best Actor then I'll then so be it. But
- 18:39Speaker 2: what I found interesting is that, you know, I think
- 18:42Speaker 2: it was during COVID. Andy Weir, the author of this book,
- 18:48Speaker 2: sent a manuscript to Ryan Gosling, and Ryan said he
- 18:52Speaker 2: had no idea what it was. He didn't know what
- 18:55Speaker 2: it is about. And since then, and it was over
- 18:59Speaker 2: six years ago, and he became a producer on it
- 19:03Speaker 2: and read it and has obviously been very protective of
- 19:07Speaker 2: it through the years. The fact that the author sends
- 19:10Speaker 2: you a manuscript and wants you to basically do a
- 19:14Speaker 2: movie is very impressive. I didn't even know that was
- 19:19Speaker 2: real because I don't even know if the book was published.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Was it published in twenty twenty.
- 19:26Speaker 3: That's a good question. I don't know.
- 19:28Speaker 2: I don't know. Can my producer look this up? Can
- 19:32Speaker 2: you tell me when Project hel Mary was released? Because
- 19:37Speaker 2: I'm thinking, because I don't guess he read the book,
- 19:39Speaker 2: but I don't know if it's a manuscript for the
- 19:40Speaker 2: book or the manuscript for whatever script would would come
- 19:46Speaker 2: of it, which again Drew Goddard actually adempt and so
- 19:50Speaker 2: he got it before as a book because he said
- 19:52Speaker 2: he had no idea what it was. But as far
- 19:55Speaker 2: as Gosling's performance, I think it's great. I think it
- 19:58Speaker 2: it it. All of his strengths as an actor throughout
- 20:04Speaker 2: the years shines through on this. There's this warmth, there's
- 20:07Speaker 2: the there's the charisma, there's the comedy of it. There's
- 20:10Speaker 2: also the very much of where he can get sentimental,
- 20:13Speaker 2: emotional aspects of it. I think he nails. I think
- 20:17Speaker 2: he understands it. I also think a lot of it
- 20:19Speaker 2: is because he's so he's so intertwined in this project
- 20:24Speaker 2: that I think by the time we get to like
- 20:26Speaker 2: filming the movie, he's seems like he's locked in.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's his baby too at that point. YEP.
- 20:34Speaker 2: One thing I really liked is that so through the
- 20:37Speaker 2: experience with with Rocky and everything, he kind of has
- 20:39Speaker 2: an ear piece in there and interacting because he go
- 20:43Speaker 2: He's talked about how he's basically on set alone for
- 20:46Speaker 2: like one hundred days and on the ear in the
- 20:49Speaker 2: ear piece, he's getting different stuff. Well, apparently that his
- 20:52Speaker 2: daughters had came to set one day and they surprised
- 20:55Speaker 2: him and they're talking through as Rocky and he said
- 21:00Speaker 2: some of his reactions is in the movie. And I
- 21:03Speaker 2: thought that was a beautiful thing. For those of anybody
- 21:06Speaker 2: that has kids and a parent, I think it kind
- 21:09Speaker 2: of just takes you to another level.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Yeah, that's great.
- 21:13Speaker 2: I thought that was awesome. I really do think this
- 21:15Speaker 2: is some of his best work. I think between the
- 21:17Speaker 2: guy that just kind of doesn't expect much of himself
- 21:20Speaker 2: and doesn't expect like he you know, when when he
- 21:23Speaker 2: is called to the mission. It's not like he's like
- 21:25Speaker 2: I don't want to, He's scared. And there's a part
- 21:28Speaker 2: in the movie, and there's also a part that kind
- 21:30Speaker 2: of digs deep into the book where he kind of
- 21:33Speaker 2: realizes that like he was a coward but but but
- 21:37Speaker 2: there's more to that the coward, but he's there and
- 21:40Speaker 2: the way that he's gotten on there, but the way
- 21:41Speaker 2: that he has kind of fulfilled this mission. They were right,
- 21:46Speaker 2: like he knew what to do. I loved it. And again,
- 21:52Speaker 2: this movie doesn't work without him. It just can't. He's
- 21:56Speaker 2: in most of it. A lot of it is the
- 21:58Speaker 2: camera in his face, and I think that's a lot.
- 22:03Speaker 2: I think that says a lot about the kind of
- 22:06Speaker 2: actor you want to carry something like this, and I
- 22:09Speaker 2: think there are some real elite players that have played
- 22:13Speaker 2: this kind of part where it's all or nothing and
- 22:18Speaker 2: all of it's on your shoulders. What did you think
- 22:21Speaker 2: of his What did you think of his performance? And
- 22:23Speaker 2: where you kind of rank it, because I do have
- 22:25Speaker 2: in my notes. Is this your kind of favorite Ryan
- 22:27Speaker 2: Gosling performance or movie?
- 22:29Speaker 3: It could be recency biased, but it feels like it's
- 22:31Speaker 3: hard to say no to that. Just what you've already
- 22:35Speaker 3: said the way that it kind of pulls together all
- 22:37Speaker 3: the things that you already loved about him from other things.
- 22:42Speaker 3: And I mean, you know, Kent Ken in Barbie, you're
- 22:46Speaker 3: getting spurts of him, but you're not getting him throughout,
- 22:49Speaker 3: and you're not meant to leave this share. You're getting
- 22:53Speaker 3: him the whole way through, and he's carrying the project.
- 22:57Speaker 3: I remember read when I was reading the book, thinking that,
- 23:02Speaker 3: you know, early on some reviews started coming out, even
- 23:04Speaker 3: before we got a chance to see you. They're really high,
- 23:08Speaker 3: and I remember thinking, he is the perfect person to
- 23:13Speaker 3: kind of carry this what it has to be. That
- 23:16Speaker 3: piece you were talking about about bravery and coward and
- 23:21Speaker 3: all that something that I picked up on the second
- 23:24Speaker 3: viewing that I didn't It's like you said, it's through
- 23:27Speaker 3: the book, but I didn't catch it. In the movie.
- 23:29Speaker 3: There's one of the flashbacks earlier on. He's walking with
- 23:32Speaker 3: Captain Yol, who's one of his compatriots on the ship,
- 23:37Speaker 3: and says, I really admire you, how brave you are.
- 23:40Speaker 3: I just couldn't do this, and Yaol says to him,
- 23:44Speaker 3: it's not like a gene. You just find someone worth
- 23:47Speaker 3: being brave for and the movie and in the movie
- 23:51Speaker 3: that's where I got it. And in the movie, I
- 23:54Speaker 3: mean Rocky is that that someone that pushes him over
- 23:59Speaker 3: the edge to be to be.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Brave exactly and that and we'll get into the relationship
- 24:04Speaker 2: because it really is the heart and soul of the movie.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Ryan Gossling, movie or performance? Best? Is it your Is
- 24:13Speaker 2: it your favorite?
- 24:14Speaker 3: I guess I just I think so. It's it's hard
- 24:16Speaker 3: to say no to that.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Well, you forgot about Drive, so you're wrong. So but
- 24:22Speaker 2: thank you for for uh doing that. Yeah, no, it
- 24:26Speaker 2: is one of my favorites. I love Drive. None of
- 24:29Speaker 2: my family loves it. They hate it, but they're I mean,
- 24:37Speaker 2: they're dumb. So yeah, that's I mean, clearly.
- 24:41Speaker 3: I like Drive. But it's just the heart of this
- 24:43Speaker 3: what the things you were describing earlier, the emotion, the humor.
- 24:47Speaker 2: I think it's honestly Mount Rushmore talk. It's it's in
- 24:51Speaker 2: the top four. I think Barbie gets there. I think
- 24:54Speaker 2: Drive gets there. I think I think Project Hill Mary
- 24:58Speaker 2: gets here, and I think some things And even though
- 25:00Speaker 2: like Barbie, which I really like and I think he
- 25:02Speaker 2: made the most of it, there is something about the
- 25:05Speaker 2: kind of just being the lead and it is your
- 25:08Speaker 2: like it's your movie. It succeeds or fills on you.
- 25:14Speaker 2: And I think that's it. Like I would say one
- 25:16Speaker 2: of my favorite performances just and even though it is
- 25:19Speaker 2: I would consider an ensemble. But I love crazy stupid Love.
- 25:23Speaker 2: I think it's one of the best mom cooms that
- 25:27Speaker 2: I've ever seen. But I think Project hil Mary is
- 25:30Speaker 2: up there as far as Ryan Gosling's work. Yeah, and
- 25:32Speaker 2: I think it means a lot. So let's get to Rocky.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Rocky is a big part I kind of liked and
- 25:39Speaker 2: Gossling in some interview kind of he discussed it where
- 25:45Speaker 2: there was talk about not showing him in the trailers
- 25:48Speaker 2: or people complaining that he was in the trailers, right,
- 25:51Speaker 2: He's like in a nutshell, And I think this was
- 25:56Speaker 2: on Travis in Jason Kelsey's podcast, but he's like, that's
- 26:00Speaker 2: like saying ET was just about divorced parents, Like why
- 26:05Speaker 2: wouldn't we show him? Because it is a part of it.
- 26:08Speaker 2: And I agree, I don't think it should be a
- 26:09Speaker 2: secret that it is, but because the surprise of it
- 26:12Speaker 2: all is just how emotional and endearing the relationship is
- 26:17Speaker 2: and kind of how they meet and the humor between
- 26:19Speaker 2: them and the heart between them and I have a
- 26:24Speaker 2: so in the adaptation, it is where it is practical
- 26:33Speaker 2: physical puppet that's operated by it says, by a team
- 26:38Speaker 2: of like four to seven puppeteers, but it is led
- 26:40Speaker 2: by James Ortiz, who also provides the character's voice. It says,
- 26:44Speaker 2: instead of CGI, the tangible rock like creature allowed Ryan
- 26:47Speaker 2: Gossling to act opposite a real physical presence on set.
- 26:54Speaker 2: What do you I'm sorry there's a dog race happening around. Well,
- 26:59Speaker 2: I'm trying. I love it. I think I think the
- 27:05Speaker 2: movie even builds upon more than what the book even
- 27:10Speaker 2: gives you. It brings out the heart, it brings out
- 27:14Speaker 2: the emotion, it brings out the jokes, the funniness of
- 27:17Speaker 2: it that I hate mark thing that people have been
- 27:21Speaker 2: posting about. I think it's great. I also really really
- 27:26Speaker 2: appreciate them not going full CGI and having this practicality
- 27:31Speaker 2: to it and being able to have something because I
- 27:34Speaker 2: don't know if you've seen it, but he's basically like
- 27:36Speaker 2: they've shown Rocky at the premiere and stuff like that,
- 27:39Speaker 2: and so I think it means a lot when people
- 27:41Speaker 2: don't rely on so much technology and can bring something
- 27:45Speaker 2: physical to it. What did you think of their relationship
- 27:49Speaker 2: with based Out's portrayed from the book and into the movie.
- 27:54Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, they're in the In the book a
- 27:58Speaker 3: lot of Rockies. A lot of the humorous moments with
- 28:02Speaker 3: Rocky are almost accidental, as he's like learning learning how
- 28:06Speaker 3: humans act and think and that kind of thing, and
- 28:10Speaker 3: the movie gives him some more of his own kind
- 28:13Speaker 3: of wit and cleverness about he learns to kind of
- 28:17Speaker 3: play back and forth. And I think again, that was
- 28:21Speaker 3: a good shift, even though it's it's minor. Well, and
- 28:26Speaker 3: you know what you're talking about the practical nature of
- 28:28Speaker 3: the which I heard Lord and Miller say the puppeteers
- 28:31Speaker 3: they called the rocketeers, which is very fitting in a
- 28:37Speaker 3: time where there's so much discussion about AI green screens
- 28:42Speaker 3: and CGI and what's real, what's not, what's valuable in
- 28:47Speaker 3: that for it to be something that does harken back
- 28:52Speaker 3: to et and you know when things were always practical.
- 28:58Speaker 3: You know, we've we've talked so many people have talked
- 29:01Speaker 3: about something like Jurassic Park. The reason it holds up
- 29:06Speaker 3: is because of the way it's made.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Yeah, and the piece is.
- 29:09Speaker 3: Put together and that feels very true in this. I
- 29:13Speaker 3: mean I was even leaning over to my ten year
- 29:15Speaker 3: old and saying, there's no green screen in this movie,
- 29:18Speaker 3: and he could not believe it because all he knows
- 29:21Speaker 3: is green screen.
- 29:21Speaker 2: You thought it was popcorn in the air, like.
- 29:23Speaker 3: Papa, Yes, that's right. Yes, took off his Newsy cap. Yeah. No,
- 29:30Speaker 3: held it over as heart as Newsy capt you know.
- 29:32Speaker 2: And I sent you something because I knew you appreciate
- 29:34Speaker 2: it after we'd already seen it. But this was a
- 29:36Speaker 2: tweet from a culture crave, but it had the details
- 29:39Speaker 2: about Project Him Mary, and it has two thy and
- 29:42Speaker 2: eighteen visual effects shots. No green screen was used. Entire
- 29:46Speaker 2: interior of the ship was built space exteriors and space
- 29:50Speaker 2: ship shots were entirely digital by ILM, which I don't
- 29:54Speaker 2: quite know what that is. And then they do want
- 29:56Speaker 2: to talk about Rocky. I was a blend of puppetry
- 29:57Speaker 2: and animation from a company frame store, and I it
- 30:02Speaker 2: is amazing when you watch something like that and we're
- 30:04Speaker 2: talking about an Imax, where again it's just it's it's
- 30:09Speaker 2: sort of like a Nolan movie. It's astonishing. I can't
- 30:12Speaker 2: recommend it enough seeing that in Imax in seventy millimeter.
- 30:16Speaker 2: But it is crazy that they went through this, through
- 30:20Speaker 2: these measures to make it still feel like the olden
- 30:25Speaker 2: days of things being physical and being there kind of
- 30:28Speaker 2: like in the nineties, sort of like a Spielberg Jurassic Park,
- 30:30Speaker 2: where you know, there was a lot of like just
- 30:33Speaker 2: and and I've and I've heard and I've heard Gossling
- 30:36Speaker 2: talk about like very talented technicians to bring all of
- 30:43Speaker 2: this stuff to life, and it feeds into such a
- 30:48Speaker 2: just a phenomenal film. It's it's it's really impressive.
- 30:53Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 30:56Speaker 1: So.
- 30:56Speaker 2: And there's and again, Ryan Gosling and Rocky are kind
- 30:59Speaker 2: of the thing, but there is Sandra Huler Anatomy of
- 31:02Speaker 2: a Fall. She has been a lot of different different
- 31:07Speaker 2: things and I do like her. I like her in
- 31:09Speaker 2: this I think when we're talking about the book, Uh,
- 31:13Speaker 2: it makes her more human in the film that she
- 31:15Speaker 2: is in the book. She's pretty cold and kind of business,
- 31:19Speaker 2: you know, straight to business type snap of her fingers
- 31:23Speaker 2: makes anything happen, but sympathetic, empathetic not not really brings
- 31:32Speaker 2: her back to have a little bit of heart in
- 31:35Speaker 2: this one, especially as she feels scorts doctor Grace and
- 31:38Speaker 2: kind of the the work that needs to be done
- 31:41Speaker 2: and his kind of belief and that he's not worthy
- 31:45Speaker 2: and she is. And I think one of the best
- 31:48Speaker 2: scenes is one of the last times they talk and
- 31:53Speaker 2: showing that she's not like this is actually confidence in him,
- 31:56Speaker 2: even though it doesn't seem like it. I think that's
- 31:58Speaker 2: a I think that's a great But I will say
- 32:01Speaker 2: one of the best scenes, if not the best scene,
- 32:04Speaker 2: is or karaoke, Yes, Sign of the Times by Harry
- 32:11Speaker 2: Styles and for those that have not heard it, so
- 32:15Speaker 2: Ryan Gosling did not know she could sing, and he
- 32:18Speaker 2: heard her down the hall and apparently it was just
- 32:22Speaker 2: some scene that had some karaoke in the background. It
- 32:25Speaker 2: was not in the script at all, and he went
- 32:29Speaker 2: to her and asked her, can you please sing during this?
- 32:31Speaker 2: And she said I would only sing if I sing this,
- 32:36Speaker 2: and it was Signs of the Time. And Ryan Gosling
- 32:39Speaker 2: kids around and talks about what his producer had on
- 32:42Speaker 2: if she could have picked something that was not as expensive,
- 32:44Speaker 2: because yes, it's a very known song from a very
- 32:47Speaker 2: known artist, but she sings it and it ends up
- 32:52Speaker 2: becoming one of the most I think it's pivotal. I
- 32:58Speaker 2: think it's it's it's such an important piece, and what
- 33:06Speaker 2: a song to pick to sum up what is essentially
- 33:12Speaker 2: happening in this film. It's definitely one of the best scenes.
- 33:17Speaker 2: It's could be the best scene because it's just it
- 33:22Speaker 2: comes out of nowhere, but it's just so poignant on
- 33:27Speaker 2: what exactly, on what they're doing and what they're talking about,
- 33:31Speaker 2: and what that song is about. I loved it. It
- 33:35Speaker 2: adds so much to it. Sorry, someone broken in my house.
- 33:39Speaker 2: It adds so much to it. I was really blown
- 33:43Speaker 2: away by and the fact that it was never even
- 33:45Speaker 2: supposed to happen. I feel like it's just one of
- 33:48Speaker 2: those like fantastic Like it's the magic of the movies
- 33:56Speaker 2: where shit just kind of alignes and you're like, hmm,
- 33:59Speaker 2: you couldn't have planned.
- 34:00Speaker 3: It something that. Going back to what you were saying,
- 34:03Speaker 3: I agree one hundred percent about how good that scene is.
- 34:06Speaker 3: You were talking about them injecting her with a little
- 34:09Speaker 3: bit more humanity in the movie. Then this is also
- 34:14Speaker 3: something I picked up the second time that I don't
- 34:16Speaker 3: know that I pieced together the first time. Right before that,
- 34:19Speaker 3: they're above board. He has come up from the party
- 34:23Speaker 3: and says, I don't get it. They're they're all dancing,
- 34:26Speaker 3: people are hooking up. They're all gonna die, and she
- 34:31Speaker 3: says it comforts some of them to respond to each
- 34:35Speaker 3: other that way.
- 34:36Speaker 2: And that's before she sings.
- 34:37Speaker 3: And right, and she says, she says, me, not so much.
- 34:42Speaker 3: But then that scene shows she gets it, even if
- 34:46Speaker 3: it's not for her.
- 34:46Speaker 2: His reaction to it, Yes, he understands, Yes, he understands.
- 34:53Speaker 2: I I liked her. I feel like she brings so
- 34:56Speaker 2: much more to that character than what's actually written in
- 34:58Speaker 2: the book. Not that her character is is not written
- 35:05Speaker 2: with importance, but there is something that they're adding into
- 35:08Speaker 2: the film that just makes her at least more relatable
- 35:12Speaker 2: and not so cold hearted. And I think about where
- 35:14Speaker 2: like there's talk about with Ryan Gosling and best Actor
- 35:17Speaker 2: and I'll tell you what supporting actress that were in there.
- 35:20Speaker 2: I feel like you could just play that karaoke scene
- 35:22Speaker 2: and would be good. So I talked about Drew Goddard,
- 35:25Speaker 2: he adapted the book, which he also did The Martian,
- 35:28Speaker 2: another indie weird book, and this kind of goes to
- 35:33Speaker 2: what I want to talk about with the ending. Goddard,
- 35:36Speaker 2: along with Miller and Lord, felt very strongly about not
- 35:39Speaker 2: changing the ending, and according to Miller and Lord. The
- 35:42Speaker 2: test audience's responses went really well too, because they didn't
- 35:48Speaker 2: then there was gonna be pushback, and they expected it.
- 35:50Speaker 2: But I was happy to hear about that because I
- 35:53Speaker 2: know they do those test audiences and what you know,
- 35:57Speaker 2: what's high and what's low. But I ran across thing
- 36:01Speaker 2: and I really like this. This was per Indy Wired.
- 36:03Speaker 2: It was in interview with it and Phil Lourd talked
- 36:06Speaker 2: about and he says, and it is a story about
- 36:09Speaker 2: a guy who, unlike most space protagonists, he does not
- 36:13Speaker 2: fill at home on Earth and lonely in space. He
- 36:16Speaker 2: feels lonely on Earth and at home in space with
- 36:19Speaker 2: his one friend. Laughs. So it takes a trajectory of
- 36:23Speaker 2: that character, not one where he goes over and back
- 36:26Speaker 2: and starts where he finished. It's out in the universe.
- 36:30Speaker 2: He's progressed to the next version of himself. I didn't ever,
- 36:36Speaker 2: I didn't quite even when I read the book, when
- 36:39Speaker 2: I was touching those pages with my tongue. Yes, and
- 36:42Speaker 2: the movie, I didn't see it that way necessarily, But
- 36:47Speaker 2: it's very true, yeah, And it is. It very much
- 36:50Speaker 2: is the case with that, And I'm so glad that
- 36:55Speaker 2: there was enough support behind it, because there were I
- 36:58Speaker 2: told it, there was a time in the film where
- 36:59Speaker 2: I'm like, I don't know if they're going all the way.
- 37:04Speaker 2: And I don't want to get into spoiler territory. I'll
- 37:08Speaker 2: just say I was wondering if you get that, if
- 37:11Speaker 2: we would get to that point and get to that
- 37:14Speaker 2: final push, because and the thing with I think with
- 37:17Speaker 2: the with the big picture, and I heard them talk
- 37:19Speaker 2: about it is like there it seemed like there is
- 37:21Speaker 2: like a few endings yeah, before it actually ends, even
- 37:26Speaker 2: even though they had not read the book and it
- 37:30Speaker 2: did feel that way. But also knowing the source material,
- 37:35Speaker 2: you know that it's okay, are we going to do?
- 37:40Speaker 2: Is it gonna be where it's the suggestion of it,
- 37:43Speaker 2: but you don't see it, and you just know that
- 37:45Speaker 2: this friendship is more than what it is or more
- 37:49Speaker 2: you know, what is built upon with the with the narrative.
- 37:53Speaker 2: But I really, I really enjoyed. I'm glad they did it. Yes,
- 38:00Speaker 2: And honestly, up to the very last scene, that very
- 38:03Speaker 2: last shot, YEP, I thought it was great. It's it's
- 38:08Speaker 2: a middle school teacher. And at the end of the
- 38:10Speaker 2: day that said it over the way, would you yeah,
- 38:14Speaker 2: would you do you see it ending any other way?
- 38:18Speaker 2: I mean, I think I kind of know that you would.
- 38:21Speaker 2: I think the way it ends is the way it
- 38:22Speaker 2: should end. But that's also coming from two guys that
- 38:25Speaker 2: you know, Listen Slash read the book. Then that would
- 38:28Speaker 2: be like, okay, well, I wouldn't expect anything.
- 38:29Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, I think that. I understand if you haven't
- 38:36Speaker 3: read the book that you might feel like this has multiple.
- 38:41Speaker 2: Possible ending point.
- 38:44Speaker 3: I never thought that the first time, because having known
- 38:49Speaker 3: the source material, you're waiting for that last moment that
- 38:52Speaker 3: kind of caps everything.
- 38:54Speaker 2: I'm waiting to see if they're actually going to end
- 38:57Speaker 2: with it, and when it kind of takes that slight turn,
- 39:00Speaker 2: I'm like, Okay, they're at least acknowledging it. Let's see
- 39:03Speaker 2: if we get to the to the finish line.
- 39:06Speaker 3: Well, and some people people may may think there's too
- 39:11Speaker 3: many endings or if they feel like it's overly long,
- 39:14Speaker 3: but uh, from the source material, the ending is actually
- 39:19Speaker 3: quite a bit shorter. This is completely spoilery, but from
- 39:24Speaker 3: the from the time they're reunited, there's a lot more
- 39:27Speaker 3: in the book of kind of what happens next before
- 39:31Speaker 3: they get to that endpoint.
- 39:32Speaker 2: The traveling a lot more about the finding the solution
- 39:36Speaker 2: to the.
- 39:36Speaker 3: Problem and even trying to find him at the end.
- 39:39Speaker 3: That takes a lot.
- 39:39Speaker 2: Long weeks, they say so, but again it goes back
- 39:43Speaker 2: to what we're talking about, where they kind of shorten
- 39:46Speaker 2: what what needs to what needs to happen, but really
- 39:50Speaker 2: focus on that relationship and heart friendship of it. And
- 39:54Speaker 2: I'm still I'm still amazed of just how well, just
- 39:58Speaker 2: how well cra did this. This this film.
- 40:01Speaker 3: Is, I mean it is. It is a sci fi movie,
- 40:05Speaker 3: but it's a sports movie in that the model of
- 40:09Speaker 3: like there's this goal to be accomplished and are they
- 40:12Speaker 3: gonna do it or not. It's a buddy comedy movie, like.
- 40:15Speaker 2: Have Kurt Russell doing the miracle speech in it.
- 40:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I do remember that. I was. I was surprised
- 40:21Speaker 3: by that that was one change from the book.
- 40:24Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, but I thought, okay, it makes sense.
- 40:26Speaker 2: And there's talks where because they show like there's a
- 40:29Speaker 2: part of the spaceship that kind of where they reminisce
- 40:31Speaker 2: they kind of show and he talked about where Apparently
- 40:34Speaker 2: Ryan Gosling is a very big Stalone fan with Rocky
- 40:38Speaker 2: and MG and owns Rocky and it's also the alien's
- 40:41Speaker 2: named Rocky, so they show Rocky and he's like, it
- 40:43Speaker 2: only made sense. You know what, You're right? Quick question?
- 40:49Speaker 2: Did you did you read The Martian?
- 40:52Speaker 1: No?
- 40:52Speaker 2: Did you ever read The Martian? Did you have you
- 40:54Speaker 2: seen them?
- 40:55Speaker 3: Yes?
- 40:55Speaker 2: Did you like the Martians? I did, yes, So I
- 40:58Speaker 2: will tell you I don't quite remember. I don't know
- 41:00Speaker 2: if I could sit here today and kind of compare
- 41:02Speaker 2: the book to the movie, but I will tell you
- 41:06Speaker 2: I enjoyed the movie a lot, and I also liked
- 41:08Speaker 2: the book a lot. I don't know if it was
- 41:11Speaker 2: as loyal as Project Till Mary, because obviously it's fresh
- 41:17Speaker 2: on my mind, but I'm kind of like, you know
- 41:20Speaker 2: what Andy wear stuff is getting. It's getting some mighty
- 41:24Speaker 2: fine treatment between the two that I've known, and Matt
- 41:27Speaker 2: Damon got nominated, Yeah, and The Martian was nominated, So
- 41:34Speaker 2: I would love to see that from Project Till Mary.
- 41:35Speaker 2: And I know there's some other big stuff coming out
- 41:38Speaker 2: at the year, but I also feel like everything everywhere
- 41:41Speaker 2: all at once in centers, there's always something margin April,
- 41:44Speaker 2: and honestly, with the success, we're doing this on Sunday
- 41:48Speaker 2: and it's made over eighty million over one hundred and
- 41:51Speaker 2: forty something million internationally. That's a huge thing. I think
- 41:56Speaker 2: it's the biggest of directors. I don't know if it's
- 41:59Speaker 2: agess of Ryan Gossing, but I do know I did
- 42:02Speaker 2: read that is the highest rated movie of Ryan Gossling's career.
- 42:08Speaker 3: Something I was thinking about on the way over here.
- 42:10Speaker 3: About this time last year, we were doing a podcast
- 42:13Speaker 3: on Mickey seventeen.
- 42:16Speaker 2: And got a ton of Oscar nominations.
- 42:18Speaker 3: Well, and we were at the time we were kind
- 42:20Speaker 3: of saying we might have something here, like finally there's
- 42:24Speaker 3: something to be a little excited, And I just love
- 42:28Speaker 3: that this is like a home run.
- 42:29Speaker 2: I think it's got Yeah, and the fact that like
- 42:32Speaker 2: and not just us, and we've had where Stony significant
- 42:38Speaker 2: other has talked about it, no other people who have
- 42:40Speaker 2: read the book, and no one really has any real complaints.
- 42:44Speaker 2: That's a lot in this day and age for people
- 42:46Speaker 2: to sort of agree, like man, like two and a
- 42:50Speaker 2: half hours. Man, it delivered so real quick as you
- 42:54Speaker 2: wrap things up. The cinematography fantastic, amazing ste Greg Frasier.
- 43:01Speaker 2: I don't think this would surprise anybody, but he has
- 43:03Speaker 2: done Dune Part one, Dune Part two and The Batman.
- 43:09Speaker 2: The practical effects and the terrific technicians we talked about
- 43:13Speaker 2: that they created, I think something that's very amazing. I
- 43:17Speaker 2: love the approach to it. The execution is I mean sublime.
- 43:26Speaker 2: There are so many parts when I was watching it,
- 43:29Speaker 2: and again it's being honestly enveloped in the IMAX experience,
- 43:35Speaker 2: but it's I mean, it's it's so good and even
- 43:44Speaker 2: like as it gets towards the end, anything with space
- 43:46Speaker 2: and stuff is such eye popping, jaw dropping stuff, and
- 43:53Speaker 2: I mean it's just like some people and I and
- 43:55Speaker 2: I and I think of like with Christopher Nolanberg, like
- 44:01Speaker 2: there's just there are some things that only some filmmakers
- 44:05Speaker 2: can do to make you feel this way. And I
- 44:10Speaker 2: love that it was done in such a sci fi
- 44:13Speaker 2: comedy movie but also has real heart. And again not
- 44:18Speaker 2: to get into specific scenes, but there are just things
- 44:21Speaker 2: where it just it just changes on a dime. But
- 44:25Speaker 2: from Gossling's character to the stuff back on the Earth
- 44:29Speaker 2: with Rocky, it works, and it's such and it's it's
- 44:34Speaker 2: such a it's such a sensational feeling of seeing that
- 44:40Speaker 2: and how it's applied in certain scenes, and like I said,
- 44:43Speaker 2: certain characters, certain situations, the production design. I mean, obviously
- 44:50Speaker 2: they had built part of the set on there, and
- 44:52Speaker 2: you know, a lot when into it, I heard Gossling
- 44:55Speaker 2: talk about with Great Fraser where they're they're filming where
- 44:59Speaker 2: the beginning and this kind of suit is kind of
- 45:01Speaker 2: see through. They were doing it and Ryan got's like, hey,
- 45:04Speaker 2: can we just like go on set and like film
- 45:07Speaker 2: this because He's like, I wanted to make it work,
- 45:08Speaker 2: the long hair of the long beard. I know it
- 45:10Speaker 2: looked weird, but if it felt right, And so they
- 45:13Speaker 2: go on set and they do it and it works,
- 45:15Speaker 2: and it's like you know, he and it was him
- 45:18Speaker 2: complimenting Fraser on like just how like kind of like Okay, yeah,
- 45:21Speaker 2: let's let's try this. And I feel like that's kind
- 45:23Speaker 2: of the way it was for I mean, I would
- 45:25Speaker 2: assume the whole crew. Yeah, for when it sounded like
- 45:29Speaker 2: the score So, Uh, Daniel Pemberton, I loved it. I
- 45:37Speaker 2: think it's great. I think it's gonna be one of
- 45:40Speaker 2: the best of twenty twenty six. You have any thoughts
- 45:43Speaker 2: on that as far as just the emotional range of
- 45:46Speaker 2: it and kind of how it kind of starts off. Uh,
- 45:50Speaker 2: when we kind of get the flashbacks down the first
- 45:52Speaker 2: beginning of discovering what is and then by the time
- 45:55Speaker 2: we get to the end, obviously on their mission, but
- 45:57Speaker 2: also with Rocky's relationship and where that's to go.
- 46:02Speaker 3: You know, one of the movies that's already been brought
- 46:05Speaker 3: up a lot in conversation of connected to this as Interstellar. Yeah,
- 46:09Speaker 3: and I think that was the piece that most in
- 46:11Speaker 3: my mind. It's not it's not a copy of Interstellar,
- 46:15Speaker 3: but there's just this vibe about the sound that goes
- 46:22Speaker 3: with that kind of travel, and they hit it correctly
- 46:27Speaker 3: in this movie, and it.
- 46:28Speaker 2: Changes appropriate, Like there is this fluctuation of stuff where
- 46:33Speaker 2: like it's I don't know, I don't know if it's jazzy,
- 46:37Speaker 2: but there's just there's a mixture of it. But obviously
- 46:41Speaker 2: it does change gears along with the film and where
- 46:44Speaker 2: we're at, and it works. It works perfectly. I'm for
- 46:49Speaker 2: those that don't know he has done, He's I mean
- 46:52Speaker 2: he's done a ton of stuff. I have not that
- 46:55Speaker 2: he's done, the Spider Verse films and one that I
- 46:57Speaker 2: think he didn't obviously he didn't not get enough credit
- 47:00Speaker 2: for it. In one of my top five films of
- 47:02Speaker 2: last year, but he did Eddington ari Astro's movie as well.
- 47:07Speaker 3: It's it is epic and scale when it needs to be.
- 47:10Speaker 3: It is quick and exciting when they're trying to figure
- 47:16Speaker 3: out problems, you know, kind of that real time experimenting,
- 47:22Speaker 3: trying to get to the heart of what's going on,
- 47:24Speaker 3: even before he's in space. You're right, all of those moments.
- 47:29Speaker 3: It just it fits really well and flows in the
- 47:32Speaker 3: way that it needs to.
- 47:33Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely. Just so you know, and I don't know
- 47:35Speaker 2: if you guys, but Target is offering up to sixty
- 47:39Speaker 2: percent off on select outdoor furniture Garden. Yeah, I'm part
- 47:43Speaker 2: of Target circle.
- 47:44Speaker 3: That's good to know.
- 47:45Speaker 2: I think we're still boycotting them. I'm not sure. I
- 47:51Speaker 2: think it's a great film. I know it's one of
- 47:53Speaker 2: the most highly anticipated movies of the year. I think
- 47:58Speaker 2: Lord and Miller are kind of working on Artemis, which
- 48:00Speaker 2: is another Andy wear book. I'd be happy to see
- 48:04Speaker 2: them tackle it. I think Andy Weir, kudos to him,
- 48:08Speaker 2: Martian and Project Hill Mary have been exceptional and we
- 48:12Speaker 2: can't all say that about books that turn into movies.
- 48:15Speaker 2: So good for him. I did read and I remember
- 48:17Speaker 2: us when we come out. I'm like, I don't know
- 48:19Speaker 2: how a guy like either he researches so much for
- 48:23Speaker 2: the book, but like all that science mumble trumbo that
- 48:27Speaker 2: most of us can't, you.
- 48:29Speaker 3: Know, it's very much like Christopher Nolan stuff.
- 48:32Speaker 2: Yeah, but he is very interested in that stuff, and
- 48:35Speaker 2: I think it's just part of like, oh, I want
- 48:37Speaker 2: to explore this, and obviously the Martian and Project Hill Mary.
- 48:41Speaker 2: I don't think I've read Artemis. I feel like I have,
- 48:44Speaker 2: but I don't remember. But all of it has those
- 48:47Speaker 2: same elements to it, but it also makes for a
- 48:49Speaker 2: good read. And he's I mean, I saw the choices
- 48:54Speaker 2: and I guess sending it to Ryan Gosling for whatever reason,
- 48:57Speaker 2: maybe he's kind of saw Grace as God's and Gosling
- 49:00Speaker 2: as a producer now. But I can't think of really
- 49:04Speaker 2: a better of a better adaptation that has just such
- 49:13Speaker 2: amazing results to watching. Even the changes that are made
- 49:17Speaker 2: in the book, it works, and it works for the better,
- 49:21Speaker 2: Like it's not like you're cheating anyone out of it.
- 49:24Speaker 2: The two and a half hours I felt like went
- 49:26Speaker 2: by fast. I don't think that. I think part of
- 49:29Speaker 2: the big picture got Amanda and Sealm were talking about
- 49:32Speaker 2: how like seem a little too long. I didn't think so,
- 49:35Speaker 2: but again, maybe it's because we did read the book.
- 49:39Speaker 2: I'm not sure, but I.
- 49:40Speaker 3: Uh definitely asking Stony about that, having not read the book,
- 49:43Speaker 3: and he he agreed that it didn't.
- 49:45Speaker 2: He's asleep, yes, yeah, he's falling asleep, but I think
- 49:49Speaker 2: he would saying that it went by pretty good. And
- 49:51Speaker 2: then his wife listened to it like you did, and
- 49:54Speaker 2: I know, really enjoyed it so and I think that's
- 49:57Speaker 2: kind of like, I think this is one of those
- 49:59Speaker 2: things where people are gonna go and watch it, and
- 50:01Speaker 2: I wouldn't be surprised if it kind of as other
- 50:04Speaker 2: people kind of revisit it. I could see this, I
- 50:09Speaker 2: could see this really kind of running running the marathon
- 50:13Speaker 2: of one of the best of the year critically, commercially,
- 50:19Speaker 2: and I'm all for it. But obviously, if you can,
- 50:23Speaker 2: imax is the way to go. It really is breathtaking
- 50:26Speaker 2: to see. I remember one of the things that was
- 50:29Speaker 2: the end and it's like just all like it's just
- 50:31Speaker 2: red and it's sort of like in his Gossling's image,
- 50:36Speaker 2: like it just it's it's phenomenal. They were talking about
- 50:39Speaker 2: where Gosling's done this. He did First Man, which I liked.
- 50:45Speaker 2: I didn't love Damien Chillzel. He's good in it, but
- 50:50Speaker 2: that's what talks about the space stuff with what is
- 50:54Speaker 2: her name? The SNL skits where he's adopted by aliens.
- 50:58Speaker 2: McKay he's calls and Gosling has called himself a space case.
- 51:04Speaker 3: Well and we we like I said this after we
- 51:06Speaker 3: got out, and I mean this in the best way possible.
- 51:08Speaker 3: At the beginning of the movie has some things that
- 51:10Speaker 3: really reminded me of Rocketman with Harlan Williams kind of
- 51:14Speaker 3: this man, I'm not supposed to be here.
- 51:16Speaker 2: People don't know what you're talking.
- 51:18Speaker 3: Well, they need to go find out Disney movie. They
- 51:21Speaker 3: need to go.
- 51:22Speaker 2: I understand.
- 51:23Speaker 3: I told like, this guy's not supposed to be here,
- 51:27Speaker 3: doesn't know what he's doing. And but it all works
- 51:31Speaker 3: because in a way that Rocketman never tries to be
- 51:34Speaker 3: he gets to because he's got all the knowledge. He
- 51:38Speaker 3: gets to the competency he needs to.
- 51:40Speaker 2: By the end, as the reminders come flooding in, you
- 51:45Speaker 2: realize that he is the right guy for the mission.
- 51:49Speaker 2: He didn't know it, but others did. And I also
- 51:53Speaker 2: think that's a great discovery within the book and within
- 51:55Speaker 2: the and within the film. So yeah, I project Hill
- 51:59Speaker 2: Mary's my favorite film of the year.
- 52:01Speaker 3: YEA. One thing that stuck in my mind that Lord
- 52:05Speaker 3: and Miller interview on The Big Picture. They said, in
- 52:09Speaker 3: kind of tackling the source material, how big it is,
- 52:12Speaker 3: and they were talking about just being excited about it,
- 52:14Speaker 3: but it's also hard, and so they kind of like,
- 52:17Speaker 3: in a way, their production of the movie was the
- 52:21Speaker 3: story of the movie, like, can can you capture this
- 52:24Speaker 3: thing that is so difficult? And they said, you've just
- 52:29Speaker 3: got to hope you're making someone's favorite movie ever. And
- 52:32Speaker 3: I think they really might have.
- 52:33Speaker 2: Done with this. I totally agree. And Gosslin kind of
- 52:36Speaker 2: said the same thing, is that making hell Mary was
- 52:40Speaker 2: sort of their hell Mary. Yeah, And I'm like, I
- 52:43Speaker 2: totally get it. So just just restate your rating.
- 52:48Speaker 3: For I gave it a five. If I sit on
- 52:50Speaker 3: it long enough, I might say four and a half.
- 52:52Speaker 3: But I voted with my heart.
- 52:54Speaker 2: I think it's I think it's well worth it. I
- 52:56Speaker 2: did four and a half out of five. I wouldn't
- 53:00Speaker 2: I wouldn't down if we go through the year and
- 53:02Speaker 2: it ends up being a five out of five. It's
- 53:04Speaker 2: something I would happily own. I would happily watch again.
- 53:07Speaker 2: I don't think you could recreate that experience in imax,
- 53:10Speaker 2: but it is such a it's such a beautiful thing
- 53:14Speaker 2: that I'm really really grateful that that was my first
- 53:18Speaker 2: experience seeing it, and I hope, I hope it is
- 53:21Speaker 2: uh for others. So all right, Brett, thanks man, appreciate it.
- 53:25Speaker 2: I wanted to really do this. I was excited about it.
- 53:28Speaker 2: We were excited about it when we we saw the movie,
- 53:31Speaker 2: and the fact that we've read the book. It's very
- 53:33Speaker 2: rare because I'm a very slow reader. I'm currently reading
- 53:38Speaker 2: Cinema what is it called. It's Quentin Tarantino's book.
- 53:43Speaker 3: I can't wait for the movie of that.
- 53:45Speaker 2: So yeah, and and honestly it's kind of fun. I
- 53:47Speaker 2: just got reading. I just got done reading about Bullet,
- 53:50Speaker 2: Steve McQueen's movie, and I'm about to start Deliverance, which
- 53:52Speaker 2: I have seen. Apparently people get raped, I'm not sure,
- 53:58Speaker 2: but yeah, well sorry, sorry, it is a movie from
- 54:00Speaker 2: the seventies. I don't I'm not breaking I'm not breaking
- 54:03Speaker 2: news here, but you want to tell people where they
- 54:06Speaker 2: can find you letterbox, Twitter.
- 54:08Speaker 3: Facebook, letterbox. I believe is br Macintosh and if not,
- 54:12Speaker 3: you'll follow somebody else.
- 54:13Speaker 2: So I don't know, I don't know. Uh, Sir Brandon
- 54:16Speaker 2: be on Twitter, Sir Brandon on Twitter and uh again,
- 54:20Speaker 2: project Hell Mary, great film, go see it. I'll join
- 54:25Speaker 2: the line of people saying see it on the biggest
- 54:27Speaker 2: scream possible. It's it's well worth your time and money.
- 54:30Speaker 2: And yeah, that's it until next time. You stay classy moviegoers,
