Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: As you can see, my dishes empty, so tim sounds
- 0:05Speaker 1: that wrong? Suit y'all tronx here and we are eating
- 0:14Speaker 1: while broke. Thank you so much for feeding me today.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Of course, thanks for having me. I'm excited for you
- 0:20Speaker 1: to try my little, my little recipe here. Yeah, okay,
- 0:25Speaker 1: do you eat a lot of instant I think everyone
- 0:29Speaker 1: that has been broke before had lived and died. By
- 0:31Speaker 1: the matter of fact, if you're not a chef in
- 0:34Speaker 1: ramen or instant noodles, then you probably weren't broken up.
- 0:38Speaker 1: I think we've all kind of we've all had some
- 0:40Speaker 1: version of this, right and um, you know, I feel
- 0:43Speaker 1: like a lot of people they're so used to this
- 0:44Speaker 1: they don't even know about like the real ass ramen
- 0:46Speaker 1: that you get, like the Japanese spot, you know. Really,
- 0:49Speaker 1: I feel like now the real ramen has become so popular,
- 0:52Speaker 1: true cho, but I still run into people who are like,
- 0:54Speaker 1: why would you play fifteen dollars for some something you
- 0:56Speaker 1: get for you know that they don't know, they don't
- 1:00Speaker 1: they definitely don't know. So what are the ingredients you
- 1:02Speaker 1: have for us today? Okay, so we got some Mama noodles,
- 1:05Speaker 1: which are a high version of like rama noodles, okay,
- 1:08Speaker 1: and then we got some corn, which I just like
- 1:10Speaker 1: to throw and everything. We got some some scallions, greene onions,
- 1:14Speaker 1: myt dogs, eggs, and some peanut butter and some so
- 1:17Speaker 1: rota of course. All right, So this is how I
- 1:21Speaker 1: challenged to know if someone's really broke, because if they
- 1:23Speaker 1: just do a straight ramah, I'm like, you haven't eaten
- 1:25Speaker 1: ramen enough until you tweaked it. You gotta tweak and
- 1:28Speaker 1: finesse in your own way, I think, especially with the
- 1:30Speaker 1: peanut butter. That was my dad's thing. That was something
- 1:32Speaker 1: he got me doing when I was a little kids.
- 1:34Speaker 1: So okay, all right, I'm excited. Let's do it. Let's
- 1:37Speaker 1: do it. When was the last time you ate this,
- 1:39Speaker 1: dish man? Probably? Um? I mean I probably just made
- 1:43Speaker 1: this like like a month ago. Um. Just you know,
- 1:46Speaker 1: when I'm at the house just like and and and
- 1:49Speaker 1: we don't feel like just cooking or ordering food, and
- 1:52Speaker 1: you know, you can't you can't go wrong, you know,
- 1:54Speaker 1: but do you make it as fancy as this? Because
- 1:56Speaker 1: I feel like this is kind of fancy. I mean,
- 1:58Speaker 1: I'll throw some hot dogs or something. I mean, now
- 2:00Speaker 1: that I got a little you know, I always have
- 2:03Speaker 1: some white wife. He doesn't like using the hot dogs,
- 2:08Speaker 1: so I tried to throw a little ground chicken in
- 2:10Speaker 1: there for her or something a little little healthier. Um,
- 2:15Speaker 1: And just so you know, I've never actually heard of
- 2:18Speaker 1: the Mama Mama noodles. Yeah, I've always heard of just
- 2:22Speaker 1: one ram like type of noodle. And then all of
- 2:25Speaker 1: a sudden, you threw this name at me, and then
- 2:28Speaker 1: I was just like, oh, and now I realized there's
- 2:31Speaker 1: like a whole bunch of different types of noodles. Mama
- 2:33Speaker 1: noodles are the tie equivalent of Rama noodles. And you know,
- 2:37Speaker 1: like I said, my mom always likes using the type
- 2:40Speaker 1: products because they're just better than everything else. That's what
- 2:42Speaker 1: she said. And um, I wasn't making a joke. That's
- 2:45Speaker 1: literally like this what my mom said. So these have
- 2:47Speaker 1: like a better flavor you think, Yeah, yeah, different flavor.
- 2:50Speaker 1: I like the I like the texture of it. I
- 2:53Speaker 1: can handle. We can you know, we're gonna we're gonna
- 2:57Speaker 1: try and hang because abtually I've you'd be surprised on
- 3:00Speaker 1: that show what I've eaten. I actually had a jail
- 3:02Speaker 1: meal a couple last week, which was very interesting. So
- 3:07Speaker 1: so I don't. I'm this is gonna be my official
- 3:10Speaker 1: meal of the day. Oh really okay, okay, yeah, I'm
- 3:12Speaker 1: excited to make this for you. Okay, did you ever
- 3:14Speaker 1: do this? Just eat these raw? I actually did on
- 3:17Speaker 1: the last episode. Yeah, it was my first time. I
- 3:22Speaker 1: didn't even know that was a possibility. It's a great snap.
- 3:25Speaker 1: And also when it mixes with the hot water in
- 3:28Speaker 1: your stomach, they expence, you get pulled. Oh you know,
- 3:32Speaker 1: I didn't even think of that. I didn't even think
- 3:35Speaker 1: about that. So tell me a little bit about yourself,
- 3:37Speaker 1: like your upbringing, because I feel like we see you,
- 3:41Speaker 1: you know, as a comedian, as a rapper, and we
- 3:43Speaker 1: don't really get to see the other side of like
- 3:47Speaker 1: what life was like or you're growing up and how
- 3:50Speaker 1: you broke into the industry, because I'm sure you had
- 3:52Speaker 1: quite a bit of hurdles. Yeah, definitely. I mean, if
- 3:55Speaker 1: we're talking about eating all broke, um, you know, uh
- 3:58Speaker 1: my family was deaf the lead broke. We we were
- 4:04Speaker 1: just you know, I grew up on like the east
- 4:07Speaker 1: side of Long Beach. We had a little one bedroom
- 4:11Speaker 1: apartment and uh my mom was a cook at like
- 4:15Speaker 1: a casino just wherever she could get cooking jobs, you know,
- 4:18Speaker 1: because that was she just loved cooking. That was her thing. Um,
- 4:20Speaker 1: And my dad was doing like welding jobs in l
- 4:23Speaker 1: A and U. And one of my main real like
- 4:27Speaker 1: motivators for trying to get on and and and become
- 4:31Speaker 1: like successful in the whatever business I was in is
- 4:35Speaker 1: because I wanted to, you know, take care of my
- 4:37Speaker 1: parents and pay back my parents who all the all
- 4:39Speaker 1: the times, like they had to work because my mom
- 4:42Speaker 1: was always working like super late nights, and you know,
- 4:44Speaker 1: she had like at one point she had like two jobs.
- 4:46Speaker 1: She was working at two different restaurants. And one thing
- 4:48Speaker 1: that I will say is that even though we were
- 4:51Speaker 1: like broke, um and we didn't necessarily have a lot
- 4:55Speaker 1: of money for like fancy ingredients, my mom always made
- 4:58Speaker 1: sure that the food was was tasty, you know, like
- 5:02Speaker 1: because she was she was like a cook, you know,
- 5:04Speaker 1: like so usually ideally she wasn't using hot dogs. She
- 5:09Speaker 1: liked to use um, like some ground pork or something
- 5:12Speaker 1: like that. That was her thing. The hot dogs are
- 5:14Speaker 1: just I just really like hot dogs. So I think
- 5:16Speaker 1: I just kind of asked my parents to make it
- 5:18Speaker 1: with hot dogs a lot as a young in and
- 5:21Speaker 1: uh yeah, so my goal. I told them growing up that, like,
- 5:27Speaker 1: you know, with this entertainment stuff, I know it sounds
- 5:29Speaker 1: crazy and I know it seems like it's point with, right,
- 5:34Speaker 1: But I told them I was like, watch one day,
- 5:37Speaker 1: I'm gonna make it work and I'm gonna pay you
- 5:39Speaker 1: guys this house off. I'm gonna like take care of
- 5:42Speaker 1: you guys. And we moved to a house in Paramount
- 5:48Speaker 1: when I was ten, and and eventually we got to
- 5:53Speaker 1: a point where I was able to pay off the house. Right,
- 5:58Speaker 1: And this is after you made it, Yeah, this is
- 6:01Speaker 1: after a bunch of stuff. How long would you say
- 6:04Speaker 1: your brind was before you were able to buy them
- 6:07Speaker 1: the house? So I was originally just trying to be
- 6:09Speaker 1: an actor, like doing like TV movies and stuff like that,
- 6:12Speaker 1: like auditioning. But but I felt like back when I
- 6:16Speaker 1: first started, there was really no opportunities for Asian dudes specifically,
- 6:20Speaker 1: there wasn't a whole lot of um things I could
- 6:23Speaker 1: audition for again, especially being like trying to just portray
- 6:26Speaker 1: a regular as person and not like a nerd or
- 6:28Speaker 1: a kungku dude, you know. So, um I started auditioning
- 6:32Speaker 1: for stuff, but it wasn't working out. So then I
- 6:34Speaker 1: found YouTube. Back in like oh six, no one was
- 6:36Speaker 1: really creating any type of content on youtubee. It was
- 6:39Speaker 1: brand new. So then I thought, I'm sure you can
- 6:42Speaker 1: do that, right, So what we do with the ai?
- 6:45Speaker 1: So what we do with the egg? Give? All right,
- 6:47Speaker 1: So we're just gonna put it in there, and then
- 6:50Speaker 1: what happens is you put it on that over the
- 6:53Speaker 1: what happens is the boiling water is gonna it's gonna
- 6:57Speaker 1: cook that egg up, right, and you don't need do
- 7:00Speaker 1: you break the Yeah, I'm gonna break it up in here? Okay.
- 7:03Speaker 1: So I've never ever, ever, ever in my life. This
- 7:08Speaker 1: is something my mom um and a lot of like
- 7:10Speaker 1: Asian people do, like um, with like rice soup. They're
- 7:14Speaker 1: like just bust an egg in there and the heat
- 7:16Speaker 1: from the soup will cook the egg and then um,
- 7:19Speaker 1: then you break it up and then it adds a
- 7:20Speaker 1: nice little like different texture to the flavor and like
- 7:24Speaker 1: consistency to the to the broad I think, you know, alright, Alright,
- 7:35Speaker 1: So I started making YouTube videos because I thought, Okay,
- 7:39Speaker 1: this might be a good way to to get into
- 7:41Speaker 1: the to just kind of put my face out there
- 7:44Speaker 1: to see if something could happen through just me trying
- 7:47Speaker 1: to you know, um just put myself out there, you know.
- 7:51Speaker 1: So I started doing a little stupid videos like freestyling
- 7:54Speaker 1: and like just doing impressions just to just to make
- 7:57Speaker 1: my MySpace friends laugh, you know. And then um, yeah,
- 8:02Speaker 1: I know it is it is how far back he goes, right,
- 8:05Speaker 1: And so um, once I really started to gain an
- 8:09Speaker 1: audience on YouTube, I thought, okay, this this might be
- 8:11Speaker 1: a thing, because because back then, you know, I feel
- 8:14Speaker 1: like there was no place for especially like Asian entertainers
- 8:18Speaker 1: to really do our thing, you know what I'm saying.
- 8:21Speaker 1: So there was there was such like an audience online
- 8:23Speaker 1: that was like, oh wow, I've never seen an Asian
- 8:25Speaker 1: dude like being funny or or or singing or rapping.
- 8:29Speaker 1: I started to build like an audience, you know, like
- 8:30Speaker 1: there was a lot of kids that were like, Okay,
- 8:32Speaker 1: he looks like me, this is crazy. You've never seen
- 8:34Speaker 1: this before. And people who have never seen an Asian
- 8:36Speaker 1: dude like just being like funny before, We're like, oh
- 8:40Speaker 1: this is this is this is weird. I'm a watch right,
- 8:44Speaker 1: And after doing my thing on YouTube for some time,
- 8:48Speaker 1: I built like a pretty strong audience and then uh. Um.
- 8:52Speaker 1: I was presented with the opportunity to audition for a
- 8:56Speaker 1: while and out and I got on that show. And
- 9:00Speaker 1: I was on while out for like six years, eight
- 9:04Speaker 1: seasons maybe and um and uh and you know, just
- 9:09Speaker 1: it's just opened up a lot of opportunities and YouTube
- 9:11Speaker 1: stuff the while and now. Um. So yeah, I got
- 9:14Speaker 1: to a point where I was able to pay off
- 9:15Speaker 1: my my family's house, um, which was dope for me
- 9:19Speaker 1: because uh, like, once I gave my parents the check
- 9:23Speaker 1: for for the house, uh, my mom was like, finally
- 9:27Speaker 1: I can I can take a break, you know. And
- 9:28Speaker 1: I was like, oh, Mom, I know, I know where
- 9:32Speaker 1: you like crying or death. I wasn't. I was happy
- 9:36Speaker 1: because I feeled the whole thing and I was happy,
- 9:38Speaker 1: Like my mom cried. My dad was like, oh I
- 9:40Speaker 1: knew you could do it, blah blah blah. But I
- 9:43Speaker 1: didn't get emotional until she said that. You know. That's
- 9:45Speaker 1: when I was like, oh, mom, you know, because I mean,
- 9:47Speaker 1: that's that's why I did it at the end of
- 9:49Speaker 1: the day, you know, because I wanted them to feel
- 9:50Speaker 1: like they could take a break, you know. So that
- 9:54Speaker 1: must have been crazy. It was crazy, especially you know,
- 9:56Speaker 1: after like years of like I'm throwing corner. They're just
- 9:59Speaker 1: because I really like, do I want to try your dish?
- 10:02Speaker 1: And I love corn, by the way, that's my favorite vegetable.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Corn is my ship. You know. People always check me
- 10:08Speaker 1: like corn isn't healthy, it gives you no nutrients, and
- 10:11Speaker 1: I'm like, I don't care corn and I love like
- 10:15Speaker 1: all like versions of corn, like I love corn. I
- 10:18Speaker 1: love the little thing from man, is that what you
- 10:23Speaker 1: call it? Let me tell you. When I see them
- 10:25Speaker 1: on the street, I will bust the straight you term
- 10:30Speaker 1: because it's like it's almost like you're lucky if you Okay. So,
- 10:35Speaker 1: so here's the thing with the peanut butter. Okay, so
- 10:38Speaker 1: Thai people you know on curry, right, A lot of
- 10:40Speaker 1: curry is like peanut based. So my dad, whenever he
- 10:44Speaker 1: was making these noodles for me, he would throw in
- 10:46Speaker 1: some peanut butter because he felt like the peanut butter
- 10:49Speaker 1: kind of like, um, you know, add a little something
- 10:52Speaker 1: to it, and also was similar to like a curry. Take. Okay,
- 10:55Speaker 1: I'm just that too much peanut butter? Is that enough? Okay?
- 10:59Speaker 1: Go happened. So I don't know if I've ever added
- 11:02Speaker 1: this much peanut butter figure. You know that's making so
- 11:05Speaker 1: you can you can really get this peanut butter. You
- 11:07Speaker 1: know exactly it's gonna be. It looks great, all right,
- 11:12Speaker 1: it looks delicious. And look you could see the egg
- 11:14Speaker 1: turn into egg. Yes, that's amazing. Yes, so this is
- 11:17Speaker 1: a whole watch this is you're gonna You're gonna start
- 11:19Speaker 1: throwing your eggings some soup after this and telling you
- 11:22Speaker 1: I can see that. So did your parents ever have
- 11:24Speaker 1: some doubt and say, like you should go to school
- 11:26Speaker 1: or something? Yeah, you know, I mean my whole life
- 11:29Speaker 1: when I was like pursuing the whole entertainment stuff, like
- 11:32Speaker 1: they always said. They always said like, Okay, yeah, we know,
- 11:36Speaker 1: this is what you love, this is what you want
- 11:37Speaker 1: to do. But also, you know, make sure you get
- 11:39Speaker 1: your make sure you get your degree, you know, and
- 11:42Speaker 1: I'll go yeah, yeah, And that was always the goal
- 11:47Speaker 1: that I was going to go back and finish and
- 11:49Speaker 1: get my degree, right, But it got to a point
- 11:52Speaker 1: where I kind of had to balance both things, you know,
- 11:55Speaker 1: and I was having trouble balancing like college and like
- 11:58Speaker 1: the different shows that were popping up and the different
- 12:00Speaker 1: shoots I had to do. So I eventually like I
- 12:02Speaker 1: took a semester off, and then I took another semester off,
- 12:06Speaker 1: and then I took like a year off, and then
- 12:08Speaker 1: I eventually just never went back. You know, do they
- 12:10Speaker 1: ever mention it well, because well, now you you could
- 12:14Speaker 1: have checked for their house. They're like, we don't care
- 12:15Speaker 1: what you do, right. I was just gonna say, like,
- 12:17Speaker 1: I mean, my mom one time. One time she was like,
- 12:20Speaker 1: you're gonna go back and get your degree? Right? And
- 12:23Speaker 1: I was like, I was like, Mom, you really want
- 12:25Speaker 1: me to finish my degree or you want to keep
- 12:28Speaker 1: paying for your ship? And she was like, okay, okay never.
- 12:34Speaker 1: But the thing about it is I knew they kind
- 12:37Speaker 1: of I think at the at the end of the day,
- 12:39Speaker 1: you know, Asian parents, even though like you know, traditionally
- 12:42Speaker 1: they want you to be like a doctor or or
- 12:44Speaker 1: or finished school, at least, I think they just really
- 12:46Speaker 1: want you to um have security, you know what I'm saying.
- 12:48Speaker 1: They want to make sure I'm taken care of. And
- 12:50Speaker 1: I think once they realized that it was it was
- 12:52Speaker 1: legit and it was really something I was like making
- 12:54Speaker 1: money off of and I could live off of, then
- 12:56Speaker 1: then they took it seriously. You know, all parents kind
- 12:59Speaker 1: of bragged to their friends about what their kids do, right,
- 13:02Speaker 1: and then, um, I remember my dad used to be like, oh,
- 13:05Speaker 1: you know my son he made using this and this
- 13:07Speaker 1: and that, and he also does these little like videos
- 13:09Speaker 1: of his friends. Right. But then I remember one day
- 13:12Speaker 1: he was like, yeah, you know my son's things on YouTube.
- 13:15Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, okay, he gets it, he gets it down.
- 13:19Speaker 1: He was like, I've got a little a little portionate
- 13:21Speaker 1: for you. I got some green onions on there, just
- 13:25Speaker 1: just just to have them. I feel like little peanuts
- 13:27Speaker 1: should be at the top of this. Yeah, that would
- 13:29Speaker 1: be nice. And how you like these? Look at that?
- 13:33Speaker 1: This is looking official. I feel like I should just
- 13:37Speaker 1: take a couple, take all you a little you know
- 13:41Speaker 1: what I'm saying. I feel like I should have a
- 13:43Speaker 1: phone on this set and just be able to take
- 13:46Speaker 1: pictures of the dish because some of these are played.
- 13:48Speaker 1: And look how nice it's played. Yall can't see this,
- 13:51Speaker 1: but it's played it really good. It's played it really great. Guys.
- 13:57Speaker 1: This looks delicious And it didn't take long to make, no,
- 14:00Speaker 1: not at all, you know, instant, and this this was
- 14:03Speaker 1: really affordable to I mean, like a couple of bucks.
- 14:06Speaker 1: I mean, you know when you're broke, yea do what
- 14:09Speaker 1: you got? This is good broke eating, though, what did
- 14:13Speaker 1: you get the first bite? Everyone's doing that. You take
- 14:17Speaker 1: the first bite. It's hot, It's extremely hot. Was there
- 14:25Speaker 1: ever a point in your career where you felt like
- 14:28Speaker 1: you weren't gonna make it or like, was there like
- 14:30Speaker 1: a hurdle that you thought I may have may need
- 14:34Speaker 1: to do a U turn you know what? Um? Oh
- 14:38Speaker 1: you can, you can. Really. There's a lot of peanut
- 14:40Speaker 1: butter like that not bad, right. The flavoring on this
- 14:51Speaker 1: is like restaurant quality, Like I would I would totally
- 14:54Speaker 1: pay like twenty dollars for this dish. And that's that's
- 14:57Speaker 1: that's what that's what they do, gentrification of some instant noodles.
- 15:02Speaker 1: And I was like, so what was that point? Mm hm, um,
- 15:06Speaker 1: you know what he's his name right? Um. I've never
- 15:11Speaker 1: felt discouraged like that because for me, I always looked
- 15:15Speaker 1: at it as just something I really had to work towards. Um.
- 15:19Speaker 1: And if I ever like I'm still not where I
- 15:22Speaker 1: want to be, you know, because I still feel like
- 15:23Speaker 1: I have a lot of work to do still. Um
- 15:26Speaker 1: and UM. I was never at a point where I
- 15:28Speaker 1: felt like, Man, I'm not, I'm not. I'm not, I'm
- 15:33Speaker 1: not like I'm failing at this right because I felt
- 15:35Speaker 1: like as long as I kept making baby steps towards
- 15:38Speaker 1: what I was doing, then I was I was going
- 15:40Speaker 1: in the right direction, you know. So I feel like
- 15:42Speaker 1: as long as I just keep working and keep running,
- 15:45Speaker 1: I was gonna be all right. You know, what would
- 15:47Speaker 1: you say, is the hardest milestone you've had to hit
- 15:49Speaker 1: in your career so far? Mm hmm. I feel like,
- 15:55Speaker 1: you know, I think that, um, a lot of people
- 15:59Speaker 1: will get discouraged just when you get like rejected, right
- 16:03Speaker 1: when you're going on auditions and you don't get the
- 16:06Speaker 1: part that you wanted. Like I've I literally had like
- 16:10Speaker 1: five different movies that were supposed to be like built
- 16:14Speaker 1: around me, Like people like all right, we going to India,
- 16:16Speaker 1: we shoot this movie. Um, we got this movie. Oh
- 16:19Speaker 1: J Cole is gonna be in there. You we wouldn't
- 16:21Speaker 1: want to want you, like multiple different projects that have
- 16:24Speaker 1: just feel it away and fell flat. You know, I think,
- 16:27Speaker 1: you know, when you're younger, you know, I got a
- 16:29Speaker 1: lot of people of course like me, like especially with
- 16:31Speaker 1: me doing the wrap stuff as well, like you know,
- 16:33Speaker 1: people would start they would they would be be laughing
- 16:38Speaker 1: before I even started wrapping, you know, especially like when
- 16:40Speaker 1: I was younger, younger, what is this be trying to
- 16:42Speaker 1: wrap and then um? But I think it's like you
- 16:48Speaker 1: can't let stuff like that keep you from going after
- 16:52Speaker 1: what you want. You know, there's always gonna be somebody
- 16:54Speaker 1: like talking ship or or making you feel stupid or
- 16:56Speaker 1: make you um, we're telling you that, like you're you.
- 17:00Speaker 1: You can't do it, you know what I'm saying. So
- 17:02Speaker 1: it's like, what what's the point? I feel like life
- 17:03Speaker 1: is too short to worry about what other people think
- 17:06Speaker 1: about you what you want. When I see people like
- 17:10Speaker 1: yourself or Cardi B or people that like transcend, like
- 17:15Speaker 1: you know, go against the norm or the tradition, there's
- 17:18Speaker 1: a certain level of value and appreciation because by you
- 17:21Speaker 1: doing that, you just opened a door cracked in a
- 17:24Speaker 1: window for someone else to come through. So I do
- 17:27Speaker 1: know what you're talking about. Like when they were like
- 17:29Speaker 1: at one point, remember like if you saw an Asian
- 17:32Speaker 1: character was just karate or and there were these very small,
- 17:39Speaker 1: you know, roles similar to like you know what blacks
- 17:41Speaker 1: had to go through too. But when you're able to
- 17:44Speaker 1: break through that bearer. It's like, did you have anybody
- 17:46Speaker 1: ever approached you like dude if it wasn't for you, Yeah,
- 17:50Speaker 1: I mean I definitely, you know, especially since in the
- 17:53Speaker 1: beginning of my YouTube videos, I was giving a lot
- 17:55Speaker 1: of relationship advice to like teenagers, and I feel like
- 17:58Speaker 1: it was a lot of young Asian dudes who had
- 18:02Speaker 1: no type of role model, where didn't really have anybody
- 18:05Speaker 1: they could talk to that we're writing me letters and
- 18:08Speaker 1: asked me for advice just on how to be confident,
- 18:10Speaker 1: how to approach girls, whatever, whatever. So I get a
- 18:12Speaker 1: lot of kids that come up to me like, yo, man,
- 18:14Speaker 1: started watching you when I was in junior high I
- 18:17Speaker 1: just graduated college. You help me get through high school.
- 18:20Speaker 1: So that's that's dope for me because the main reason
- 18:24Speaker 1: I got into it was because I didn't see anybody
- 18:29Speaker 1: that looked like me that I could look up to,
- 18:31Speaker 1: you know. And and my old stage named Timothy Day
- 18:34Speaker 1: I get it was actually from an old episode of
- 18:36Speaker 1: The Fresh Prince because I was a big like Fresh
- 18:38Speaker 1: Prince fan, and I remember watching The Fresh Prince and
- 18:44Speaker 1: and there was an episode where Carlton's tucks like shrank
- 18:47Speaker 1: at the cleaners or whatever, so he needed another tuck
- 18:49Speaker 1: to go to dance. We had to get a last
- 18:51Speaker 1: minute like they do little corny tucks, right, And there
- 18:53Speaker 1: was this group of nerds that walked up and one
- 18:56Speaker 1: nerd Asian dude, was like, hey, Carlton, nice tucks. And
- 19:00Speaker 1: I remember thinking, damn, this is the first time I've
- 19:02Speaker 1: ever seen an Asian dude on The Fresh Prince or
- 19:04Speaker 1: even on TV like ever. And I remember thinking like,
- 19:07Speaker 1: if this is how the rest of the world, like,
- 19:09Speaker 1: if you don't know any Asian people and you just
- 19:11Speaker 1: love The Fresh Prince, this is the first time you
- 19:13Speaker 1: see Asian dude. This is your only perception Asian dudes, right,
- 19:17Speaker 1: And I just remember thinking like, man, that that's not
- 19:18Speaker 1: me and that's not like anybody I know, and I
- 19:22Speaker 1: need to get out there and just rep for my people,
- 19:24Speaker 1: you know. So yeah, pretty awesome. Why did you decide
- 19:31Speaker 1: to like switch your name back? You know it? It
- 19:34Speaker 1: was a combination of things, like the quarantine kind of
- 19:38Speaker 1: had me like thinking about life right and thinking about
- 19:41Speaker 1: like I was like, yo, if I if I got
- 19:43Speaker 1: Corona and died like right now, like I don't know
- 19:47Speaker 1: if I want people to remember me, but it's like
- 19:48Speaker 1: YouTube name. I can't you know, like and in the
- 19:51Speaker 1: in the grand scheme of things, if I see myself
- 19:54Speaker 1: like accepting awards and getting like Academy awards and stuff,
- 19:58Speaker 1: I don't want to be like, oh, what's um. You know,
- 20:00Speaker 1: this is my my silly name, my internet name. Timilarly
- 20:03Speaker 1: they like get know. I was like, let me, let
- 20:05Speaker 1: me um. I was thinking about just like my legacy
- 20:09Speaker 1: as a person, and if my whole m O also
- 20:11Speaker 1: is to make Asian dudes proud, let me fully embrace
- 20:16Speaker 1: my long ass tie last name because you know, Originally,
- 20:19Speaker 1: like you kind of think I need a Hollywood name
- 20:22Speaker 1: because like Hollywood is not gonna be able to pronounce
- 20:24Speaker 1: my name right. But then I was like, man, if
- 20:26Speaker 1: Arnold Schwartzenegger can can be very good. Yeah. I'm like,
- 20:30Speaker 1: if I actually see myself being at the at the
- 20:34Speaker 1: level that I want to be, then people will have
- 20:36Speaker 1: to know my name. So I was like, okay, let me,
- 20:39Speaker 1: let me, let me change it up, go back to
- 20:42Speaker 1: my my government name, and you know, not only like um,
- 20:47Speaker 1: just have a more like professional down the name, but
- 20:50Speaker 1: also like you know, represent from my people and you know,
- 20:53Speaker 1: for my dad and uh, and just kind of like
- 20:57Speaker 1: fully be to that. Yeah, yeah, it sounds sounds good.
- 21:04Speaker 1: So I know you're like a foodie just like myself.
- 21:08Speaker 1: But you did something that I thought was pretty kind
- 21:10Speaker 1: of so it was kind of questionable. I couldn't even
- 21:16Speaker 1: watch it fully. But you think I know what I'm
- 21:20Speaker 1: don't want to say, all right, you guess it. You're
- 21:23Speaker 1: talking about when I when I eat my wife's place. Yes,
- 21:26Speaker 1: I was just like a part of me would feel like, man,
- 21:30Speaker 1: this man loves me, but another part of me is like, yo,
- 21:33Speaker 1: if we were in a desert island, he would maybe
- 21:36Speaker 1: eat what. That's the thing about it is. I didn't
- 21:39Speaker 1: do it out of love for her at all. I
- 21:41Speaker 1: just wanted to do it. So but it was like,
- 21:45Speaker 1: how do you tell the hospital? Hey, by the way,
- 21:48Speaker 1: can you put that placenta in a free success? I'd
- 21:51Speaker 1: like to take it home and cook it, I asked. Beforehand.
- 21:53Speaker 1: I was like, what if I want to take this placenza?
- 21:57Speaker 1: How you guys feel about that? Because the placensa just
- 21:59Speaker 1: gets thrown away, um if no one wants it. But
- 22:02Speaker 1: it looks like a steak like so I thought placensa
- 22:05Speaker 1: was like a liquid in a tube or something. Placensa
- 22:08Speaker 1: is and it's in there right now, You've got one
- 22:10Speaker 1: in there. It's an organ that develops while you're pregnant,
- 22:14Speaker 1: you know, to help be the baby, but also suck
- 22:17Speaker 1: out like bad. Uh yeah all right, And it's like
- 22:23Speaker 1: it basically looks like a pancake organ situation. And so
- 22:28Speaker 1: after you give birth, you're gonna push that out. And
- 22:31Speaker 1: the hospital just was like, yeah, you can take it.
- 22:33Speaker 1: You gotta bring your own cooler. So I bought a
- 22:35Speaker 1: little Eglu cooler and can I have some ice? So
- 22:39Speaker 1: if one of the ladies, the nurse ladies brought me
- 22:41Speaker 1: some ice, um putting the cooler, and then they put
- 22:44Speaker 1: the placens in a little plastic bag for me not
- 22:46Speaker 1: doing the cool So like while she was pushing, you
- 22:49Speaker 1: were like, hey, don't waste that. Make sure you don't
- 22:56Speaker 1: get the ground. So behind the scenes that have to
- 23:00Speaker 1: dig and while out you guys all have to write
- 23:02Speaker 1: your own or do you guys? You battle it out
- 23:05Speaker 1: and then you go to the stage. Now know what
- 23:07Speaker 1: happens is, Um, what happens is they'll kind of they'll
- 23:10Speaker 1: tell you who's done to be on the next the
- 23:13Speaker 1: other team and some people, I mean some people definitely
- 23:16Speaker 1: go in like you know, like with some jokes. Ready, um,
- 23:19Speaker 1: I'll have a couple of jokes in the back of
- 23:20Speaker 1: my mind sometimes. But if anything, you know, right before
- 23:24Speaker 1: we shoot the wild style, which is where we actually battle, um,
- 23:27Speaker 1: you know, you kind of are just like looking up
- 23:29Speaker 1: and down everybody on that team, like, all right, who who?
- 23:31Speaker 1: What can I say about this person? And sometimes people
- 23:34Speaker 1: mess up and they'll come up to me and be like, hey,
- 23:35Speaker 1: I got bars for you I had. I'm like cool.
- 23:38Speaker 1: I'm like, all all right, cool, and you might hit
- 23:40Speaker 1: him like because then I'm like, all right, I know
- 23:42Speaker 1: what I'm about to say. I'm like, okay, okay, let
- 23:45Speaker 1: me look at his fit, let me look at his hair, alright, alright, alright.
- 23:48Speaker 1: You know, so if someone was trying to be in
- 23:52Speaker 1: your position, you know, going from eating wall broke literally
- 23:57Speaker 1: and becoming the best chef eating wall broke, that's main
- 24:00Speaker 1: be my favorite dish on the show, ah to getting
- 24:07Speaker 1: to your seat and your position and the entertainment business
- 24:11Speaker 1: and breaking tradition. What advice would you give them? I
- 24:15Speaker 1: look at it like this, Oh you want to hear something?
- 24:17Speaker 1: You want to hear some something cool. Yea. So people
- 24:21Speaker 1: all ask me, they're like, yo, how does it feel?
- 24:23Speaker 1: How do you feel to be living your dream? Right?
- 24:26Speaker 1: And I always tell them like, because the things that
- 24:28Speaker 1: I never looked at what I do as a dream,
- 24:32Speaker 1: right because I feel like a dream is something that
- 24:33Speaker 1: seems real, like a little far away, like not real,
- 24:36Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, Like a dream is like
- 24:38Speaker 1: I'm flying, yeah, And I never looked at it like that.
- 24:42Speaker 1: I look at my goals more like a destination, right,
- 24:46Speaker 1: because a destination is something you know is there. You
- 24:49Speaker 1: just gotta keep on heading towards it, you know what
- 24:52Speaker 1: I'm saying. Like, and you might not you might not
- 24:55Speaker 1: go the same way you thought you had to go, like,
- 24:58Speaker 1: you might have to pivot and go take different um detours,
- 25:02Speaker 1: but if you keep on moving forward towards that destination,
- 25:04Speaker 1: you'll get there. So that's how yeah, right, you just
- 25:09Speaker 1: come up with that, you know, I've been saying that
- 25:10Speaker 1: for years. So yeah, So I always tell people like,
- 25:13Speaker 1: you gotta look at your goals as a destination, not
- 25:15Speaker 1: a not a dream, because a dream is like unrealistic,
- 25:18Speaker 1: but it's there for as long as you keep working
- 25:20Speaker 1: towards it. You'll get there, you know. So how long
- 25:22Speaker 1: was your road trip to your destination? Would you say, Man,
- 25:24Speaker 1: you don't I feel like I'm still I'm still on
- 25:26Speaker 1: the journey. Yeah, I'm just like still on the road trip,
- 25:29Speaker 1: still on the road trip, and I'm enjoying the ride,
- 25:31Speaker 1: and it's come with its um fun pit stops, you
- 25:35Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, Like, I'm just continuing the road
- 25:40Speaker 1: trip and and I'm still I feel like, you know,
- 25:43Speaker 1: I still got work to do as far as like
- 25:44Speaker 1: where I want to be, but you know you can
- 25:47Speaker 1: do it. And thank you so much for feeding me.
- 25:50Speaker 1: You're welcome. Glad you like the second is taping stops.
- 25:54Speaker 1: I'm gonna be surping this. You should have made more.
