- 0:26Speaker 2: He certainly outkicked my expectations, and in addition to those
- 0:30Speaker 2: like middle of the field stats, I thought, anecdotally I've
- 0:33Speaker 2: said this a lot about Shucks rookie year, he would
- 0:35Speaker 2: be in the gun throw the ball from the far
- 0:37Speaker 2: hash outside the numbers as well, like I thought he'd
- 0:40Speaker 2: I thought he did really well at that too, So
- 0:42Speaker 2: like activating all levels. Not gonna say it was perfect
- 0:44Speaker 2: by any means. I'm not trying to get two out
- 0:46Speaker 2: of over my skis here on him, but I thought
- 0:48Speaker 2: he checked a lot of boxes, looked really good in
- 0:50Speaker 2: a well designed offense, and they only got better on
- 0:53Speaker 2: paper from this year to last year. So like right now,
- 0:56Speaker 2: he is the guy I would have the most confidence
- 0:59Speaker 2: in going into year two out of these rookie quarterbacks
- 1:02Speaker 2: from twenty twenty five. So that's Matt Harmon from the
- 1:05Speaker 2: Football three to zero one podcast. He does the podcast
- 1:09Speaker 2: with Nate Tice, who's a former Wisconsin quarterback, former NFL coach, scout,
- 1:13Speaker 2: all that sort of stuff part of Yahoo, by the way,
- 1:16Speaker 2: Yahoo puts on the Football three zero one podcast, And
- 1:19Speaker 2: so it was interesting because he was they were discussing
- 1:22Speaker 2: the twenty twenty five rookies, the quarterbacks are going into
- 1:25Speaker 2: year two and who they have the most confidence. And
- 1:27Speaker 2: remember you're talking about a draft class that includes cam
- 1:31Speaker 2: Ward that there were thirteen quarterbacks drafted in twenty twenty five.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Cam Ward went number one overall.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Jackson Dart was the other first rounder who went to
- 1:41Speaker 1: New York with the Giants at twenty five. Then Tyler
- 1:43Speaker 1: Schuck was the third quarterback taken. He was the first
- 1:46Speaker 1: quarterback in round two. Jalen Milroe went to the Seahawks.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Still in Gabriel went to the Browns Schadure. It was
- 1:55Speaker 1: interesting because Gabriel went ninety four and then Shadur went
- 2:00Speaker 1: fifty picks later at one forty four, both to Cleveland.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Kyle mccordy of Syracuse was picked one't eighty one. There
- 2:08Speaker 1: was Will Howard of Ohio State who went to the Steelers.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Riley Leonard went to the Colts. The Texans picked Graham Mertz.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Tommy Mallott from Montana State went to the Raiders with
- 2:20Speaker 1: pick two thirteen. The Raiders also picked Cam Miller of
- 2:24Speaker 1: North Dakota State. Curtis Rourke from Indiana went to the Niners,
- 2:28Speaker 1: and then Quinn Ewers of Texas went to Miami.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Of course made the team.
- 2:32Speaker 1: So I don't know that that's not exactly a star
- 2:36Speaker 1: started draft class obviously, at least not now as of
- 2:39Speaker 1: the results. Now, Shadur did make a Pro Bowl, almost
- 2:43Speaker 1: by the fault because nobody wants to playing the Pro
- 2:44Speaker 1: Bowl anymore. But Shadur was a Pro bowler last year
- 2:46Speaker 1: as a rookie. But Tyler Shuck a lot of it.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Really with Shuck is the eye test because he started
- 2:55Speaker 1: nine games and they won five of them.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Who's five and four in his nine starts.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And honestly, and I kind of throw up an asterisk
- 3:02Speaker 1: on the first one because the first one was the game.
- 3:04Speaker 1: His first start was in LA against the Rams and
- 3:07Speaker 1: they got housed and that was just a miserable idea
- 3:10Speaker 1: to give him his first start there you were setting
- 3:13Speaker 1: him up for failure. So really, if you want to
- 3:15Speaker 1: look at the next you know, the next eight starts
- 3:20Speaker 1: where they went five and three, that's maybe a little
- 3:22Speaker 1: more of a representative sample of Tyler Schuck. But he
- 3:27Speaker 1: passed the eye test. Well. Anyway, Nate Tice, again former
- 3:32Speaker 1: Wisconsin quarterback, NFL coach, scout all that sort of stuff
- 3:36Speaker 1: on the three to one podcast, talked about what the
- 3:40Speaker 1: Saints have built around Shuck going in year two, which
- 3:44Speaker 1: is we've obviously had that whole conversation. It's just interesting
- 3:47Speaker 1: to get an outside perspective on something that we're close to,
- 3:51Speaker 1: because sometimes it's hard to see the forest through the trees.
- 3:54Speaker 1: And let's just be honest. The Saints haven't been in
- 3:57Speaker 1: the playoffs since the COVID year. They've been a miss
- 4:00Speaker 1: er team, is sinking franchise with an awful cap situation.
- 4:04Speaker 1: They haven't been interesting nationally. Nobody's talking about the Saints nationally.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Why would they?
- 4:09Speaker 1: So when someone outside of here talks about them, my
- 4:12Speaker 1: intent is going to go up. Well, here's what Nate
- 4:13Speaker 1: Tys said.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Like I like the Saints offensive line. I like the
- 4:17Speaker 4: weapons now they put around them. Actually no, they signed
- 4:20Speaker 4: Etn But man, going back, I was watching, I watched
- 4:22Speaker 4: a couple of games, not just morning and yesterday. But
- 4:24Speaker 4: my guy Devin Neil is actually pretty tank good. So
- 4:27Speaker 4: I'm actually pretty excited about that. But then a Lave
- 4:29Speaker 4: the receivers they added Vele actually would be a nice
- 4:32Speaker 4: role player for them now. He had some nice catches
- 4:34Speaker 4: in the game my watch against Carolina as well. I'm
- 4:36Speaker 4: not saying he's the ACE, but a Lave and Tyson
- 4:38Speaker 4: are gonna be a great one two punch tight end.
- 4:41Speaker 4: Adding delp like, they have a pretty cool offense. We've
- 4:43Speaker 4: talked about many of times. Thought Kellam Moore hit a
- 4:46Speaker 4: lot of nice buttons throughout the year, tempo, some of
- 4:48Speaker 4: the formation stuff they used, and I think that was
- 4:50Speaker 4: just the beginning.
- 4:51Speaker 5: But I do think it's encouraging what they got to now.
- 4:54Speaker 1: So some of the things that I think he hit
- 4:57Speaker 1: on there that we will continue to talk about is
- 5:01Speaker 1: the encouraging thing about the offense going to this year
- 5:03Speaker 1: is that everybody kind of doesn't have to move up
- 5:06Speaker 1: a chair.
- 5:06Speaker 3: You mentioned Devon Vley.
- 5:08Speaker 1: The Saints made the trade for Vela, and of course
- 5:10Speaker 1: they traded Rashid Shahed, So you had a lave coming
- 5:14Speaker 1: off a season where he missed half the season due
- 5:16Speaker 1: to the concussion problems.
- 5:17Speaker 3: They trade Rashid Shahed, and you're looking at a.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Situation where you got Kevin Austin rolling around, You're playing
- 5:22Speaker 1: Mason tipt In late in the season. You were asking
- 5:24Speaker 1: Devon Velay to be a number two. Well, on this team,
- 5:28Speaker 1: you can look and go, he's a role player and
- 5:31Speaker 1: I like him in that role. I like Devon Vley
- 5:33Speaker 1: as my number two. I like Alave Jordan Tyson, and
- 5:37Speaker 1: then you know Vlea's a big body guy who's your
- 5:39Speaker 1: number three. Maybe create a mismatch. Oh, and you also
- 5:42Speaker 1: have a giant guy in Oscardale who you're adding to
- 5:44Speaker 1: the room. And that's more agreeable. The way that you've
- 5:48Speaker 1: sort of built here. You're not asking guys to be
- 5:51Speaker 1: stars when they're role players, which is why this feels
- 5:53Speaker 1: a little more agreeable now. Tys also talked about where
- 5:57Speaker 1: he thinks Shuck needs to improve in year two.
- 6:01Speaker 4: The sack rate has to improve, and that's only more
- 6:03Speaker 4: concerning to me because that's what was an issue I
- 6:05Speaker 4: had with him in college, was he kind of it's
- 6:08Speaker 4: not great under pressure, and whether that's something in his
- 6:10Speaker 4: head about being hurt before he would kind of like
- 6:12Speaker 4: comically get rid of the ball like in weird ways.
- 6:13Speaker 4: And he had a higher mount of throwways last year too.
- 6:16Speaker 4: But I do think that dealing with pressure would really
- 6:18Speaker 4: help him out. He had the highest pressure to sack
- 6:20Speaker 4: rate among all quarterbacks in twenty twenty five, and he
- 6:23Speaker 4: was forty third out of forty six among all rookie
- 6:26Speaker 4: quarterbacks since twenty thirteen at pressure to sack rate.
- 6:28Speaker 5: His stuff started folding. He kind of eyes came down
- 6:30Speaker 5: and he kind of just like, all, I'm just gonna
- 6:32Speaker 5: eat the sack rather maybe trying to create something.
- 6:34Speaker 4: He becomes very much like Tua or Derek Carr under pressure,
- 6:37Speaker 4: just like safe throwaways and checkdowns, like that's just and
- 6:41Speaker 4: it's not bad, Like you can obviously win that way.
- 6:43Speaker 4: Then you just have to be when you can be
- 6:46Speaker 4: explosive and can get those big plays, you have to
- 6:49Speaker 4: hit him because you're not kind of creating those opportunities elsewhere.
- 6:52Speaker 1: So I completely understand that perspective, and he came.
- 6:56Speaker 3: With the numbers.
- 6:59Speaker 1: You also have a limited sample size, and you had
- 7:02Speaker 1: an atrocious offensive line. You were without your starting center,
- 7:06Speaker 1: Eric McCoy. You know Luke Fortner's playing center. You know
- 7:10Speaker 1: your Dylan Raiden's Radin's ra Dunes at left guard, Caesar
- 7:14Speaker 1: Ruiz at Wright.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Who's atrocious.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Well, now you've addressed that you have a rookie left tackle.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Now you've got more experienced tackles, your center's back. You
- 7:22Speaker 1: signed the best offensive garden free agency, and you still
- 7:26Speaker 1: got Caesarizer. But I think we can objectively say that
- 7:29Speaker 1: he's probably not going to be as pressured. And I
- 7:31Speaker 1: would argue what you didn't need from Schuck is to
- 7:38Speaker 1: is to panic and make the big mistake. I think
- 7:43Speaker 1: I'd rather say, Keith the sack, live to play another day,
- 7:47Speaker 1: throw it away, live to play another day. Now, eventually
- 7:50Speaker 1: you're gonna have to go make plays in the face
- 7:52Speaker 1: of pressure. But does a better offensive line help you
- 7:57Speaker 1: improve in that respect? And one more again, this is Nate.
- 8:00Speaker 1: He's talking about about Tyler Shuck. He did talk about
- 8:03Speaker 1: the things he liked from Shuck in year one.
- 8:06Speaker 4: He plays like an older rookie and I and I
- 8:08Speaker 4: mean as a compliment, makes a lot of smart decisions.
- 8:10Speaker 4: He's careful with the ball. He's a good athlete, throws well.
- 8:13Speaker 5: On the move.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Even when he was at Littleville, I thought it was
- 8:16Speaker 4: very notable, was that he could throw on the left
- 8:18Speaker 4: and whip his body around and make some really creative throws.
- 8:20Speaker 4: That's not how he wins, but the fact that he
- 8:22Speaker 4: can do it's encouraging because the boot game's very alive
- 8:25Speaker 4: to both ways. I thought he can be selective pushing
- 8:27Speaker 4: the ball, which I want to see more.
- 8:29Speaker 5: Maybe next year with a little bit better receiving group.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Maybe then we can kind of see how it looks
- 8:33Speaker 4: with maybe more stuff down field. But that's not to
- 8:35Speaker 4: say he's a coward or anything. I just think sometimes
- 8:37Speaker 4: he can maybe push it. Just you know, limit testing.
- 8:39Speaker 4: When he talked about Kimore, let me have tested a
- 8:41Speaker 4: little bit more.
- 8:43Speaker 1: I'll draw a cop that I don't mean as a
- 8:47Speaker 1: as a player to player cop, but it sounds a
- 8:50Speaker 1: lot like if you remember Jaden Daniels first year at LSU,
- 8:54Speaker 1: that was one of the big criticisms was he wouldn't
- 8:57Speaker 1: take the shots. He would, he just didn't put the
- 9:00Speaker 1: ball and harm's way. But that's how LSU won. Protect
- 9:02Speaker 1: the football, play good defense, that's kind of what Shuck
- 9:06Speaker 1: did a year ago, although we did see him make
- 9:08Speaker 1: very nice plays like you heard him say, you know,
- 9:09Speaker 1: the ability to throw along to the field. Why anyway,
- 9:13Speaker 1: better offensive line, better weapons around him, year of experience,
- 9:17Speaker 1: How much better can he be?
- 9:18Speaker 3: Ab'll be fascinating to see. Tyler Shuck could be one
- 9:20Speaker 3: of the more
- 9:23Speaker 1: Higher rising players in the entire NFL in twenty twenty
- 9:27Speaker 1: six if he builds on the way he finished twenty
- 9:29Speaker 1: twenty five.
