- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The Propers of the Day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The Feast of Saint Apollinaris, Bishop and Martyr, July 23 in the year of our Lord 2026.
- 0:22Apollinaris came from Antioch to Rome with the prince of the apostles who anointed him bishop and sent him to Ravenna to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. Therefore, the epistle chosen is that in which Saint Peter describes the duties of those who are to guide the church, not domineering, but as models of the flock. The gospel also says that the one who is the greatest shall be like the least, and the one who governs like the one who serves.
- 1:01Arrested by the false pagan priests, he was cruelly beaten and cast into prison, then exiled to the banks of the Danube into Thrace. Having returned to Ravenna, he was again persecuted and was murdered in the year of our Lord. '79. Thus did he put to profit the talents entrusted to him by God. In the midst of our trials, let us remain united to Jesus, and he will prepare for us as for this saint a place in his kingdom.
- 1:43In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The introit. O ye priests of the Lord, bless the Lord. O ye holy and humble of heart, praise God.
- 2:03Blessed are they who pass through life's journey unstained, following the law of the Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be, through all ages of ages. Amen. O ye priests of the Lord, bless the Lord. O ye holy and humble of heart, praise God.
- 2:36The Collect, let us pray. O God, the rewarder of faithful souls, who hast consecrated this day to the martyrdom of Blessed Apollinaris, thy priest, grant us thy servants we beseech thee, that as we observe his venerable feast, we may obtain forgiveness through his prayers. A commemoration of Saint Liborius. Grant we beseech thee, O Almighty God, that the August solemnity of thy blessed confessor and pontiff, laborious, may increase our devotion and promote our salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 3:36A lesson from the first letter of Saint Peter the Apostle. Brethren, I have a charge to give to the presbyters in your company. I, who am a presbyter like themselves, I, who bear witness of Christ's sufferings, I, who have my part in that glory which will one day be revealed. Be shepherds to the flock God has given you. Carry out your charge as God would have it done cordially, not like drudges, generously, not in the hope of sordid gain, not tyrannizing each in his own sphere, but setting an example as best you may to the flock.
- 4:33So when the prince of shepherds makes himself known, your prize will be that crown of glory which cannot fade, and you who are young must defer to these your seniors. Deference to one another is the livery you must all wear. God thwarts the proud and keeps his grace for the humble. Bow down then before the strong hand of God. He will raise you up when his time comes to deliver you.
- 5:13Throw back on him the burden of all your anxiety. He is concerned for you. Be sober and watch well. The devil who is your enemy goes about roaring like a lion to find his prey. But you grounded in the faith must face him boldly.
- 5:38You know well enough that the brotherhood you belong to pays all the world over the same tribute of suffering. And God, the giver of all grace who has called us to enjoy after a little suffering his eternal glory in Christ Jesus will himself give you mastery and steadiness and strength. To him be glory and power through endless ages. Amen. The gradual.
- 6:21I have found David my servant. With my holy oil I have anointed him For my hand shall help him, and my arm shall strengthen him. The enemy shall have no advantage over him, nor the son of iniquity have power to hurt him. Alleluia. Alleluia.
- 6:46The Lord hath sworn, and he will not repent. Thou art a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Luke. At that time, there was a rivalry between the disciples over the question, which of them was to be accounted the greatest?
- 7:16But Jesus told them, the kings of the Gentiles lorded over them, and those who bear rule over them win the name of benefactors. With you it is not to be so. No difference is to be made among you between the greatest and the youngest of all, between him who commands and him who serves. Tell me which is greater, the man who sits at table or the man who serves him. Surely, the man who sits at table.
- 7:56Yet I am here among you as your servant. You are the men who have kept to my side in my hours of trial. And as my father has allotted a kingdom to me, so I allot to you a place to eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. You shall sit on 12 thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel. The offertory.
- 8:31My faithfulness and mercy shall go with him. As my champion, he shall rise to greatness. The secret. Graciously look down upon these gifts, O Lord, which we bring in remembrance of thy blessed priest and martyr Apollinaris, and offer up for our offenses. A commemoration of St.
- 8:59Liborius. May thy saints, we beseech thee, O Lord, everywhere make us joyful, that while we venerate their merits, we may experience their patronage through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify.
- 10:07We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
- 10:42The communion. Lord, thou deliverst to me five talents. Behold, I have gained another five over and above. Well done, good and faithful servant. Because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will set thee over many things.
- 11:08Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord. The post communion. Let us pray. Receiving thy holy mysteries, we beseech thee, O Lord, that the continued protection of blessed Apollinaris may comfort us. For thou dost not cease to regard mercifully those to whom thou hast granted such aids for their assistance.
- 11:38A commemoration of Saint Laborious. Grant we beseech thee, Almighty God, that we who give thanks for the gifts which we have received, may, through the intercession of blessed Liberius, thy confessor and bishop, obtain still greater blessings through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen.
- 12:28Saint Apollinaris, pray for us. Saint Liborius, pray for us.
