- 1:08Speaker 1: usc Trojans. It is a roller coaster of a Reid
- 1:13Speaker 1: Many Burke will join me next week either Monday or
- 1:16Speaker 1: Tuesday on the program. Scott clind Dinnon will be in
- 1:20Speaker 1: with us tomorrow. We'll have our Clark Eisenhower outdoor edition.
- 1:25Speaker 1: On Thursday, we're going to talk about water quality issues
- 1:28Speaker 1: in Baffin Bay. That's hitting close to home, not Florida,
- 1:32Speaker 1: baff And Bay. That's on Thursday. We'll have another high
- 1:36Speaker 1: school report Thursday. Young Ryan will be in Friday. I'll
- 1:40Speaker 1: visit with Kirk Bolls on Friday. So we got that
- 1:43Speaker 1: going on for us, which is nice. Aggie basketball tipping
- 1:46Speaker 1: off in just about an hour. They are in Knoxville
- 1:51Speaker 1: to play the Fighting Rick Barnes' I think I saw
- 1:55Speaker 1: this right. The first ranked team they played all year
- 2:02Speaker 1: ranked at the time, which Tennessee is. Tennessee's a substantial
- 2:07Speaker 1: favorite in this game. A little bit surprised at the
- 2:10Speaker 1: spread yesterday's nine and a half. Have a look today.
- 2:15Speaker 1: First thing we're going to do is we're going to
- 2:18Speaker 1: hear from In the first hour, we heard from Kurt
- 2:21Speaker 1: Signetti of Indiana. We're going to hear from Mario Christobal
- 2:25Speaker 1: of Miami. Time permitting, we'll probably hear more from both
- 2:29Speaker 1: of them and or players throughout the week and before
- 2:33Speaker 1: next Monday's game. Shouldn't be on Monday. We've had that before,
- 2:38Speaker 1: shouldn't be January the nineteenth, We've said that before. Coaches
- 2:45Speaker 1: meeting today taking three hours to determine they want red
- 2:48Speaker 1: shirts for players who have played as many as nine games.
- 2:51Speaker 1: So I'm glad they're dealing with the important issues. Big
- 2:57Speaker 1: ten SEC is still fighting, of course, for how many
- 3:00Speaker 1: games we're going to play in the playoffs, how many
- 3:02Speaker 1: teams are going to be allowed? All right, let's hear
- 3:06Speaker 1: a little bit of what the University of Miami's Mario
- 3:09Speaker 1: Christobal had to say to reporters yesterday.
- 3:13Speaker 4: Yes, sir, thank you again, thank you for being here.
- 3:15Speaker 5: I appreciate everyone, and certainly a part of our football
- 3:18Speaker 5: team for battling hard against an excellent Ole Miss squad,
- 3:23Speaker 5: and certainly a lot of credit to them, but credit
- 3:25Speaker 5: to our guys for finding a way to be one
- 3:27Speaker 5: to know and earning ourselves another opportunity this coming a
- 3:31Speaker 5: week from today Monday.
- 3:32Speaker 4: So with that being said, questions.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Please, if you have a question for coach Chris Ball,
- 3:36Speaker 3: if please stay your name and media outlet, we'll go
- 3:38Speaker 3: write a questions in the room first before turning it
- 3:40Speaker 3: over to Zoom Well mantell gun coach.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Wool manson w PLGTV coach, You're curious you've gotten to
- 3:45Speaker 1: this routine the last few weeks knowing you're going to
- 3:47Speaker 1: take a flight all over road to play a do
- 3:49Speaker 1: or die game.
- 3:50Speaker 6: How does it change when that game is at hold?
- 3:52Speaker 6: The routine of at the pattern the structure as you
- 3:55Speaker 6: prepare for this game.
- 3:56Speaker 5: You know, the routine doesn't change at all, you know
- 3:59Speaker 5: quite it's almost identical because you do have to check
- 4:03Speaker 5: into a hotel, you know, a specific hotel and a
- 4:05Speaker 5: specific date. The only thing that changes is that classes
- 4:09Speaker 5: have started, you know, and we have I believe twenty
- 4:12Speaker 5: eight new members twenty eight of twenty nine of the
- 4:16Speaker 5: thirty new members of our team here practicing with us,
- 4:19Speaker 5: which is great for us. You know, as the year
- 4:21Speaker 5: goes on, we've lost some guys to injury and they've
- 4:24Speaker 5: been able to get a glimpse of what preparation is like.
- 4:27Speaker 5: But aside from that and preparing for a game, nothing changes.
- 4:31Speaker 4: All right, bunts with the APA.
- 4:33Speaker 6: Two things I meant, one, can you serve this updatus
- 4:36Speaker 6: On probably where you guys are from an injury standpoint,
- 4:39Speaker 6: and two.
- 4:42Speaker 7: Kind of online this question, how do you ensure that
- 4:46Speaker 7: your team doesn't have an exhale like, Okay, you're in the.
- 4:50Speaker 6: Final, you're back to hard rock. How do you keep
- 4:52Speaker 6: that edge well?
- 4:54Speaker 5: From an injury standpoint, I believe we're coming out a
- 4:58Speaker 5: lot like we went into game. I know a couple
- 5:01Speaker 5: of guys getting out of the game. Mesdor is in
- 5:04Speaker 5: great condition. He heard his elbow for a second and
- 5:07Speaker 5: he's already full throttle. Amaud Moten was full throttled today.
- 5:12Speaker 5: What was the other one? I know OJ came out
- 5:16Speaker 5: Lockton would be the one that's in question. That would
- 5:19Speaker 5: be the one that was in question. But aside from that, actually,
- 5:22Speaker 5: I feel really good about the rest.
- 5:25Speaker 8: Yeah, adamant to see Sunset want us to follow up
- 5:27Speaker 8: on that. I think Guvy to mention OJ and potentially
- 5:31Speaker 8: to Murray Brown. I know he's been working his way
- 5:33Speaker 8: back throughout the playoffs.
- 5:34Speaker 5: Sure, I would say OJ is good to go, and
- 5:36Speaker 5: to Mario Browns will be day by day Coo.
- 5:39Speaker 6: Mario, Jerrem HOUSTONIM and Harold.
- 5:41Speaker 7: We've talked so much about Alumn on the sideline and
- 5:43Speaker 7: the support of mad Mary. But from the university standpoint,
- 5:46Speaker 7: Jill Jabria being on the sideline, him and Dan Radakovich
- 5:48Speaker 7: being in lock set. Just how important is that in
- 5:51Speaker 7: this day and age for the university side and the
- 5:53Speaker 7: athletic side to sort of be going hand in hand
- 5:55Speaker 7: with things.
- 5:56Speaker 6: And what have you seen from that and how much
- 5:58Speaker 6: that help the program developed?
- 5:59Speaker 5: Well, that's everything as it relates to putting together a program,
- 6:03Speaker 5: whether it's rebuilding one or sustaining one. Vertical alignment is
- 6:07Speaker 5: at the forefront of making a decision to go to
- 6:10Speaker 5: a place or staying out of place. Without that, it
- 6:12Speaker 5: doesn't work because the investment from a people standpoint, a
- 6:16Speaker 5: time standpoint, a money standpoint is immense, and you know,
- 6:20Speaker 5: unless everybody is going in the same direction, it doesn't
- 6:24Speaker 5: work no matter how much time and effort you put
- 6:26Speaker 5: into it. So it's we're extremely blessed to have someone
- 6:29Speaker 5: like Joe heading up the universion. Of course, standing rad
- 6:33Speaker 5: a coach, has done a great job, so we grind
- 6:36Speaker 5: and again very appreciative of them and all they do.
- 6:40Speaker 4: That's fine of.
- 6:42Speaker 9: You guys coming home to play in this game is
- 6:44Speaker 9: two part question. There's a lot of obvious family and
- 6:47Speaker 9: connections here, whether kids play that central word shop on
- 6:50Speaker 9: or whatever local high school. Seeing a lot of family
- 6:52Speaker 9: and stuff around here, how special is it for local
- 6:55Speaker 9: kids on your team, and then of course for you
- 6:57Speaker 9: as well. A lot of Columbus representation on Sid's coming.
- 7:01Speaker 5: I mean, it's always special when you get to play
- 7:03Speaker 5: against with or against guys that you know are new
- 7:06Speaker 5: growing up, competed against, playing on the same teams with.
- 7:09Speaker 5: So I mean, at the end of the day, your
- 7:13Speaker 5: your preparation doesn't change, your intensity is always driven up
- 7:17Speaker 5: the closer and closer you get the game time and
- 7:19Speaker 5: as you.
- 7:19Speaker 4: Go deeper into the season.
- 7:20Speaker 5: But I mean, we all know the brand of football
- 7:24Speaker 5: played down here as South Florida is special and it
- 7:27Speaker 5: shows up year in and year out at every level, right
- 7:30Speaker 5: college and pro, certainly at the high school level. So
- 7:33Speaker 5: certainly an exciting time for South Florida.
- 7:35Speaker 10: Coach David Lake with inside the youth overall, playing a
- 7:39Speaker 10: home game for a national championship is a good thing.
- 7:41Speaker 10: But with that can come potential distractions, et cetera. I'm curious, like,
- 7:46Speaker 10: how do you preach to your team about, you know,
- 7:49Speaker 10: not allowing those distractions to create.
- 7:51Speaker 5: That sure well, I mean there aren't really distractions. You
- 7:55Speaker 5: either create them or you don't. Write it's on people,
- 7:59Speaker 5: and so we get out ahead of that, right, that's
- 8:01Speaker 5: one of the stronger I would say, uh points of
- 8:04Speaker 5: emphasis as you begin the week. You know, distractions and
- 8:09Speaker 5: things and people have never been a part of the journey.
- 8:11Speaker 5: You can't let them become a part of it now.
- 8:13Speaker 5: I mean from the simplicity of getting an email to
- 8:16Speaker 5: parents as to hey, take care of tickets by tomorrow,
- 8:20Speaker 5: because we don't want your sons running around and trying
- 8:23Speaker 5: to figure other things out. They already have school, right,
- 8:26Speaker 5: we have to prepare for an awesome opportunity. We preach it,
- 8:31Speaker 5: we teach it, and then we go and we we
- 8:34Speaker 5: get away from everybody, just like we did a couple
- 8:37Speaker 5: of weeks ago, the last couple of weeks when we
- 8:40Speaker 5: went on the road. And that's where I know the
- 8:42Speaker 5: process was quote asked about earlier. It's it's no different.
- 8:46Speaker 5: Just got to shut out the outside world and go to.
- 8:47Speaker 6: Work that still be here.
- 8:50Speaker 5: There will's and that's awesome for us, you know, especially
- 8:53Speaker 5: again with the start of school.
- 8:54Speaker 4: So but we will be practicing right here.
- 8:57Speaker 6: And the first off with inside can you put in
- 9:00Speaker 6: word why you think this team has been able to
- 9:02Speaker 6: make around to get to this point, Why why they
- 9:05Speaker 6: accomplish what they've accomplished thus far.
- 9:07Speaker 4: Oh.
- 9:07Speaker 5: I think it's a process and a recipe that is
- 9:09Speaker 5: to the test of time. I think hard work, great
- 9:13Speaker 5: people getting after it relentlessly. I think that's an undefeated
- 9:17Speaker 5: combination as it relates to progress and you know, advancement
- 9:22Speaker 5: and eventually success. So I think it's a tribute to
- 9:25Speaker 5: that the people. You know, again, I have the fortune
- 9:29Speaker 5: the privilege of being up in front of you guys
- 9:32Speaker 5: and addressing questions. But it's not me just me. There's
- 9:38Speaker 5: so many people that are involved. And I think the
- 9:40Speaker 5: collaboration of like minded people, high achievers that are really
- 9:44Speaker 5: driven to push forward a program to help these young
- 9:51Speaker 5: men develop at the highest level on and off the field,
- 9:54Speaker 5: a care factor that's through the roof, and a die
- 9:56Speaker 5: hard belief in the University of Miami bleeding orange and
- 9:59Speaker 5: green through all of us. I think that's what has
- 10:02Speaker 5: really forged our progress forward as we continue to try
- 10:06Speaker 5: to get better, and we certainly have a long ways
- 10:08Speaker 5: to go.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Coach, you go to Donald and a couple of rolls
- 10:10Speaker 2: back for mccamp WS in Miami.
- 10:14Speaker 6: We was talking about building culture for every organization.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Obviously building culture here, but it seems like a lot
- 10:19Speaker 2: of players are also restonant to your characteristic of very
- 10:22Speaker 2: cool common tript Just talk about that a little bit,
- 10:24Speaker 2: how your players aren't kind of embracing your mindset be
- 10:28Speaker 2: very cool.
- 10:29Speaker 5: I think we're all very similar. You know, we all
- 10:34Speaker 5: love football, absolutely love it. We also understand the importance
- 10:38Speaker 5: of being a good person and really embrace the concept
- 10:43Speaker 5: of gratitude. You know, in the day and age where
- 10:46Speaker 5: things move fast, people move fast. Then we found out
- 10:49Speaker 5: early on, in fact, it was the year to the
- 10:51Speaker 5: day where this team first got together and then a
- 10:53Speaker 5: week from now we got to play one last time together.
- 10:57Speaker 5: And I think early on in that process a year
- 10:59Speaker 5: ago in January, this team started figuring out. You know,
- 11:03Speaker 5: this is everyone has hope in January, right when you
- 11:07Speaker 5: start the initial right process of a new season.
- 11:12Speaker 4: But it was more than hope.
- 11:13Speaker 5: I think we recognized early on this is a unique
- 11:15Speaker 5: group of individuals and that the work ethic was through
- 11:19Speaker 5: the roof. The appetite for the grind was legit and real.
- 11:25Speaker 5: So I think because we're like that, because we don't
- 11:28Speaker 5: mind getting pushed because we don't we're not easily offended.
- 11:32Speaker 5: Right correction and confrontation in a positive way. Right truth
- 11:37Speaker 5: telling is a staple of our program, and we appreciate that.
- 11:41Speaker 5: We appreciate feedback and growth and development. I think that's
- 11:45Speaker 5: what drives us. Whether we completely agree on something, whether
- 11:48Speaker 5: it's a perfect there, whether it's a challenging day, we
- 11:51Speaker 5: all know that we're in it for the right reasons.
- 11:53Speaker 6: And the two more in the room before it turned
- 11:54Speaker 6: it over to zoom and then come back. We'll start
- 11:55Speaker 6: in the front here. I looked from the sunsetnel again.
- 12:00Speaker 8: When Mark Fletcher's playing his best football since he's been here,
- 12:02Speaker 8: is what have you seen a cliff for him or
- 12:04Speaker 8: really work for him over the last month or thousands
- 12:07Speaker 8: the playoffs started.
- 12:08Speaker 5: Well, I think a couple of things. A good question.
- 12:10Speaker 5: I think the fact that he's healthy, right, I think development.
- 12:17Speaker 5: You know, I think everybody wants to see a freshman
- 12:19Speaker 5: knock it out the park right away, and that's it's
- 12:23Speaker 5: not always a way it's supposed to be the way
- 12:24Speaker 5: it ends up happening. Like a guy that has been
- 12:28Speaker 5: in a system in his third year that has seen
- 12:31Speaker 5: similar schemes, that has run behind certain guys, that has
- 12:35Speaker 5: seen certain calls against certain fronts, certain pressures, a guy
- 12:39Speaker 5: that has protected against every blitz known to man, like
- 12:42Speaker 5: day after day, year after year, Like there's nothing more
- 12:46Speaker 5: valuable than the mother of all teaching and learning. That's
- 12:49Speaker 5: the repetition, and Mark Fletcher has had hundreds and thousands
- 12:54Speaker 5: of repetitions.
- 12:55Speaker 11: And when you do that, and when you when you've
- 12:58Speaker 11: been what he's when you've been through what he's been through,
- 13:04Speaker 11: it just means that much more, you know, and it.
- 13:08Speaker 5: Shows in the way he approaches everything that he does.
- 13:11Speaker 5: So I think the combination of all those things is
- 13:13Speaker 5: what's showing.
- 13:14Speaker 4: Up front of the room.
- 13:16Speaker 6: McKenzie Easton, University of Miami TV.
- 13:18Speaker 12: All over social media, I've been seeing a lot of
- 13:21Speaker 12: the clips of the friendship that Malachaitoni and Mark Fletcher have.
- 13:25Speaker 6: Can you talk about that friendship and how it influences
- 13:27Speaker 6: the rest of the team.
- 13:28Speaker 5: Well, it's a strong friendship and one that also brings
- 13:31Speaker 5: out the best in each other. I think that you're
- 13:34Speaker 5: looking at two individuals that are highly motivated, super talented,
- 13:38Speaker 5: that were they were hurricanes forever right, and they brought
- 13:42Speaker 5: their mentality, their level of play, their drive, their motivation,
- 13:47Speaker 5: and it's a lot of them has permeated the rooms
- 13:50Speaker 5: right and their teammates. They look up to their teammates,
- 13:54Speaker 5: and their teammates look up to them. They are just
- 13:57Speaker 5: great ambassadors the program for their families.
- 14:01Speaker 4: I mean, they they're awesome, you know, and their impact
- 14:05Speaker 4: is massive.
- 14:07Speaker 6: Brett, I'll turn it over to you to moderate some
- 14:09Speaker 6: questions on Zoom.
- 14:11Speaker 13: Great, thanks a lot, cam Ye, go ahead, Brett, go ahead, Katie,
- 14:16Speaker 13: you have it.
- 14:17Speaker 4: Take it fantastic.
- 14:18Speaker 12: Chris Vannini will start with you.
- 14:22Speaker 14: Yeah, Mario, I'm just kind of curious what did you
- 14:25Speaker 14: learn from your time as the head coach at FIU
- 14:28Speaker 14: in terms of just being a head coach and what
- 14:30Speaker 14: that entails and how it all played out there.
- 14:34Speaker 5: It's the ultimate experience in cutting your teeth on. I mean,
- 14:38Speaker 5: you have to do everything. When you take over a
- 14:40Speaker 5: situation like that, it's I don't know how much of
- 14:43Speaker 5: it is documented, but when you take over a program
- 14:46Speaker 5: that I think hadn't won a game in almost two years,
- 14:49Speaker 5: was going to make the jump from a lower division
- 14:53Speaker 5: two Division one and then litter the schedule with games
- 14:57Speaker 5: against Miami Florida, Arkansas, you name it, and also be
- 15:04Speaker 5: served before even having a single practice serve with a
- 15:08Speaker 5: five year probation, seventeen in eligible players, and a contemporarious
- 15:12Speaker 5: penalty regarding the APR, which means any player that's not
- 15:15Speaker 5: eligible per semester you lose a scholarship.
- 15:18Speaker 4: So I probably got more to this and you were
- 15:20Speaker 4: hoping for.
- 15:21Speaker 5: It's just the ultimate challenge and you find out truly
- 15:25Speaker 5: what you're made of. You find out who has your back.
- 15:27Speaker 5: You start finding out everything that goes with college football,
- 15:31Speaker 5: how the burser's office works, how registration and academics and
- 15:36Speaker 5: the department and supervision and RAS and recruiting, budgets and travel,
- 15:41Speaker 5: and you have to do everything, every single part of it.
- 15:44Speaker 4: You have to be a coach, you have to be.
- 15:46Speaker 5: A CFO CEO, a provost, you have to do it all.
- 15:51Speaker 5: And so a tremendous blessing, and really the biggest blessing
- 15:55Speaker 5: was the players and the people that we had there
- 15:57Speaker 5: because they were able to take what was historically the
- 16:01Speaker 5: worst program in the country in a short period of
- 16:04Speaker 5: time and actually when their first conference championship, and it
- 16:07Speaker 5: was super rewarding.
- 16:08Speaker 4: The little Caesars Pizza ble pretty cool and.
- 16:12Speaker 14: It was obviously when you got let go, a lot
- 16:15Speaker 14: of people disagreed with that, and I'm sure you did
- 16:17Speaker 14: as well.
- 16:19Speaker 6: How did that kind of shape you as a coach
- 16:21Speaker 6: as well?
- 16:22Speaker 5: You know, I'm pretty stubborn, always have been stubborn, and
- 16:26Speaker 5: in my mind, we're going to win a national championship
- 16:28Speaker 5: there and people will look at me like I was crazy.
- 16:30Speaker 5: And sometimes if you don't move and God wants you
- 16:33Speaker 5: to move, he'll kicked you so you can move.
- 16:36Speaker 4: And for whatever reason, that's the way it worked out.
- 16:39Speaker 5: And it was a blessing because I had the opportunity
- 16:42Speaker 5: to go learn under coach Saban and then eventually end
- 16:47Speaker 5: up at the University of Oregon. Bless to be there,
- 16:50Speaker 5: and it all led back to here, to the University
- 16:52Speaker 5: of Miami. So you know, at the time, you can't
- 16:54Speaker 5: see that. You can't see straight when something like that happens,
- 16:57Speaker 5: especially when you invest every waking moment of your life
- 16:59Speaker 5: into it. But I thank God that it did.
- 17:04Speaker 15: Great.
- 17:04Speaker 12: We'll go next to Jeff rap John's Jeff, if you
- 17:06Speaker 12: don't mind stating your affiliation, we'd appreciate it.
- 17:11Speaker 4: Sure.
- 17:12Speaker 16: Jeffrab Johnspigs dot Com with the twenty four seven Sports Network.
- 17:15Speaker 16: I'm just curious doing the story and the fact that
- 17:17Speaker 16: you played with Fernando's dad, any recollections of playing with him,
- 17:21Speaker 16: just kind of what was that like when you guys
- 17:23Speaker 16: played together.
- 17:25Speaker 4: We went six and four.
- 17:27Speaker 5: We won the district championship in a three way tiebreaker.
- 17:30Speaker 5: They used to have a Kansas City tiber down here
- 17:32Speaker 5: in Dade County where you put the ball to ten
- 17:34Speaker 5: yard line and flip a coin. It was us Miami
- 17:38Speaker 5: Beach Coral Gables. Carlos werta great Miami kicker, kicked the
- 17:42Speaker 5: winning kick. We won the district title. We played number
- 17:45Speaker 5: one South Ridge in the state championship. They had a
- 17:49Speaker 5: couple of Hurricanes on there, Robert Bailey and Herbert James.
- 17:54Speaker 5: We punted, Robert Bailey fumbled the punt. Will deny it,
- 17:56Speaker 5: but he did. We recovered worth the winning kicked the
- 18:00Speaker 5: field goal, and we beat the number one team in
- 18:01Speaker 5: the state. And then we lost the next week in
- 18:03Speaker 5: sectionalst to Carol City, who was coached by coach Walt Frazier,
- 18:06Speaker 5: one of the best of all time to ever do it.
- 18:09Speaker 5: Players like Rudy Barber, who is a teammate here, a
- 18:12Speaker 5: couple guys Cedric Bentbury when he rests in peace, Tim
- 18:14Speaker 5: Paul Godfrey Miles, just an awesome time for Dade County
- 18:18Speaker 5: football and just awesome memories.
- 18:20Speaker 4: And did you guys stay in touch or do you?
- 18:25Speaker 4: I mean not really.
- 18:27Speaker 5: I think when you go to Columbus that brotherhood is
- 18:29Speaker 5: extremely strong, you know you, I mean you see that
- 18:33Speaker 5: everywhere you go, especially in town you run in. But
- 18:36Speaker 5: we have cross passed before, and certainly he was an
- 18:39Speaker 5: excellent football player and has become such a prominent member
- 18:42Speaker 5: of the community down here in the medical field, and
- 18:45Speaker 5: certainly all the respect in the world for him and
- 18:47Speaker 5: his family.
- 18:48Speaker 1: All Right, that's the head coach of Miami, the Hurricanes playing.
- 18:52Speaker 1: And the ticket prices just keep going up for Monday's game.
- 18:58Speaker 1: The demand is just outrageous for this game. It's just
- 19:03Speaker 1: a con harmonic convergence of several things that are driving
- 19:08Speaker 1: these ticket prices and mad We're gonna have to sell
- 19:14Speaker 1: a body part if you want a ticket to that game.
- 19:17Speaker 1: But right now, excited about this, We're going to jump
- 19:20Speaker 1: out to the Player's Fund Center phone line. I'm going
- 19:23Speaker 1: to visit with Martha Ackman, her book is a biography
- 19:29Speaker 1: of Dolly Parton. It's called Ain't Nobody's Full Life and
- 19:33Speaker 1: Times of Dolly Parton. Martha, good to have you with us.
- 19:38Speaker 13: How are you, I'm well, thanks very much for having
- 19:41Speaker 13: me on.
- 19:42Speaker 1: What led you to take on a subject that other
- 19:45Speaker 1: people certainly have looked into over the years. What was
- 19:48Speaker 1: fascinating about Dolly to you?
- 19:51Speaker 13: Well, everything is fascinating about Dolly to me. You know,
- 19:57Speaker 13: I think she's one of the most unified figures in America.
- 20:00Speaker 13: But I wanted to do something a little bit different,
- 20:03Speaker 13: you know. I wanted to look at the historical and
- 20:07Speaker 13: cultural and personal forces that shaped her. I wanted to
- 20:12Speaker 13: take her seriously. You know, I see her as more
- 20:15Speaker 13: than a country music singer, songwriter and movie star and philanthropists.
- 20:20Speaker 13: I see her as an American original, and that's what
- 20:24Speaker 13: I wanted to emphasize.
- 20:25Speaker 4: You know.
- 20:26Speaker 1: One of the things that surprised me is she said
- 20:31Speaker 1: she wasn't crazy about her songwriting in that I'll never
- 20:36Speaker 1: be Paul McCartney or Elton John. They just seem to
- 20:39Speaker 1: write hit hit after hit, and I can't do that.
- 20:42Speaker 1: It seems to me She's written her share of songs
- 20:45Speaker 1: over the years.
- 20:47Speaker 13: I agree with you. I think she was a little
- 20:50Speaker 13: hard on herself. And that's the only regret that in
- 20:53Speaker 13: my research I came across Dolly saying, I wish I
- 20:57Speaker 13: would have had a more consistent and songwriting and recording career,
- 21:04Speaker 13: But you know, she just does so much, and she has,
- 21:09Speaker 13: you know, in addition to the singer songwriting, of the philanthropy,
- 21:14Speaker 13: the businesses that she's involved in. You know, I as
- 21:20Speaker 13: a biographer, you have to look for the good and
- 21:22Speaker 13: the bad, obviously, and I found very few people, maybe none,
- 21:28Speaker 13: who've had anything negative to say about Dolly. But the
- 21:31Speaker 13: only criticism I came across was, you know, people saying
- 21:35Speaker 13: that she might spread herself too thin because she just
- 21:39Speaker 13: does so much. But she wakes up at four o'clock
- 21:42Speaker 13: in the morning, she's got twenty thoughts in her head,
- 21:44Speaker 13: twenty different ideas, and she wants to constantly challenge herself,
- 21:50Speaker 13: both creatively and also you know, in terms of business.
- 21:55Speaker 13: She's just good at so many things, I mean really
- 21:58Speaker 13: good that she wants to explore all of them.
- 22:02Speaker 1: I think most people know generally about the area in
- 22:07Speaker 1: which she grew up, but to say she was poor,
- 22:10Speaker 1: it's pretty much an understatement, is it not.
- 22:14Speaker 13: You're right about that. Dolly grew up in Severe County, Tennessee.
- 22:19Speaker 13: Her father was a tenant farmer.
- 22:22Speaker 1: And he never did read or write correct No.
- 22:25Speaker 13: He didn't, No, he didn't. He dropped out of school,
- 22:29Speaker 13: as many kids did at that time in that area,
- 22:33Speaker 13: at about the third grade. He was ashamed of that.
- 22:39Speaker 13: It did hinder him in terms of what he was
- 22:44Speaker 13: able to do. She was one of twelve kids, six girls,
- 22:48Speaker 13: six boys, growing up when she was real little, in
- 22:54Speaker 13: a cabin that didn't have heat, that didn't have water,
- 22:58Speaker 13: that was insulated with news papers to try to keep warm.
- 23:02Speaker 13: You know, she said it when she was in that
- 23:06Speaker 13: that little cabin that they mopped the kitchen floor in
- 23:10Speaker 13: the winter and within a minute the floor would turn
- 23:14Speaker 13: to ice because it was so cold, you know, cracks
- 23:19Speaker 13: between the walls, that sort of thing. But you know,
- 23:22Speaker 13: eventually the family moved to better homes, but but always
- 23:30Speaker 13: finding it very very difficult to make ends meet. And
- 23:34Speaker 13: and yet that is the life, that is the landscape
- 23:41Speaker 13: that became the well spring of her imagination.
- 23:44Speaker 1: And one of the reasons, I'm certain, and you write
- 23:48Speaker 1: about this, that she's given away one hundreds of millions
- 23:52Speaker 1: of books to kids all over the world.
- 23:55Speaker 13: You're absolutely right her. She founded the Imagination Library a
- 24:00Speaker 13: sort of a testament to her father and his inability
- 24:04Speaker 13: to read and write. The Imagination Library, last time I checked,
- 24:08Speaker 13: I think has given away over three hundred million books
- 24:14Speaker 13: to kids around the world, a book a month from
- 24:17Speaker 13: the time they're born until the time they start school,
- 24:21Speaker 13: and they can get a library card. And thank goodness,
- 24:24Speaker 13: her father lived to see that. And Dolly said that
- 24:28Speaker 13: of all the things she's accomplished, and my goodness, how
- 24:31Speaker 13: many things she's accomplished over a sixty year career, she
- 24:35Speaker 13: said the Reading Library was what her father was most
- 24:38Speaker 13: proud of, that she was able to do that, kids
- 24:42Speaker 13: called her the book Lady, gave him enormous pleasure.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Porter Wagner jump started her career and basically never let
- 24:53Speaker 1: her forget that.
- 24:56Speaker 13: No, they had a good and a very very bad relationship.
- 25:00Speaker 13: He hired Dolly as his girl singer, as they were
- 25:03Speaker 13: called then, back in nineteen sixty seven, and they began
- 25:09Speaker 13: doing duets and became enormously popular. But then Dolly's popularity
- 25:15Speaker 13: and her creativity surpassed Porters and he did not like that.
- 25:21Speaker 13: He said this is my show, wanting her to follow
- 25:24Speaker 13: the rules, and Dolly said, but this is my life,
- 25:29Speaker 13: and she stayed for He asked her to stay for
- 25:33Speaker 13: five years. She ended up staying for seven. It ended
- 25:36Speaker 13: very very badly, shouting matches, really terrible stuff. And the
- 25:42Speaker 13: day after she left, she came back in and said,
- 25:46Speaker 13: I can't say this in conversation, but I can say
- 25:51Speaker 13: it in a song she had written, I Will Always
- 25:54Speaker 13: Love You.
- 25:55Speaker 1: You know, that's something she's done throughout her career. When
- 25:58Speaker 1: you look at movies, soundtracks, putting songs together just almost
- 26:04Speaker 1: on demand. Some of the people around her are just
- 26:07Speaker 1: amazed at how she can come up with music.
- 26:11Speaker 13: It really is incredible. She wrote Code of Many Colors,
- 26:16Speaker 13: one of her big early hits, on the back of
- 26:20Speaker 13: a dry cleaning receipt, and a member of the band
- 26:24Speaker 13: who was with Dolly on the bus when she was
- 26:28Speaker 13: writing the song said he just marveled at it. You know,
- 26:31Speaker 13: it's almost as this as if creativity seizes her. I think,
- 26:36Speaker 13: he said. She wrote in about five or ten minutes.
- 26:40Speaker 13: So that really is a distinctive quality of Dolly Parton
- 26:44Speaker 13: how often and how fast songs come to her.
- 26:49Speaker 1: The book is called Ain't Nobody's Full Life and Times
- 26:52Speaker 1: of Dolly. Partner Martha Ackman is the author. Martha really
- 26:56Speaker 1: appreciate the time enjoyed the book. Thanks so much, Thank you, Chip.
- 27:00Speaker 13: I really appreciate it.
- 27:02Speaker 1: My thanks to Martha Ackman. And if you can find
- 27:05Speaker 1: the book, and you can, and you like Dolly, and
