Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: October 2nd, 1955 brings us to episode five of Suspense
- 0:05Speaker 1: to None a Deadly Drug. At a family-owned pharmacy, a
- 0:09Speaker 1: pharmacist discovers that a prescription mix-up has sent dangerous heart
- 0:14Speaker 1: medicine home with a young child. The boy's mother is
- 0:17Speaker 1: already traveling, and the pharmacist turns to the police as
- 0:21Speaker 1: they try to trace her route before the medicine is given.
- 0:25Speaker 1: The search moves from a neighborhood prescription counter onto surrounding
- 0:29Speaker 1: highway roads. Hank Searles wrote this CBS drama, produced and
- 0:34Speaker 1: directed by Anthony Ellis, with Harry Bartell, Charlotte Lawrence, Virginia Eiler,
- 0:40Speaker 1: Sammy Ogg, High Averbach, Larry Thor, Jack Krushen, and John
- 0:45Speaker 1: Stevenson in the cast. Now, back to the golden age
- 0:49Speaker 1: of radio.
- 0:58Speaker 2: And now, tonight's presentation of radio's outstanding theater of thrills, Suspense. Tonight,
- 1:10Speaker 2: we bring you transcribed a story of a prescription filled
- 1:13Speaker 2: in error. We call it To None a Deadly Drug.
- 1:17Speaker 2: So now, starring Harry Bartell, here is tonight's suspense play,
- 1:21Speaker 2: To None a Deadly Drug. Sometimes it can happen. A
- 1:44Speaker 2: prescription handed a druggist, a slip-up somewhere, a dead person.
- 1:49Speaker 2: When it does occur, it's news, because it is almost
- 1:53Speaker 2: unheard of. A druggist is a careful man, tempered in
- 1:57Speaker 2: the tough crucible of pharmaceutical college, filtered by a board
- 2:01Speaker 2: of examiners, sworn, as is a physician, to protect those
- 2:05Speaker 2: he serves from wrong and harm. It almost never happens,
- 2:10Speaker 2: but when it does, it can ruin a man, and
- 2:13Speaker 2: it can ruin his wife. Manxville is on U.S. 99,
- 2:22Speaker 2: near the junction of three main arteries, It's a small town,
- 2:27Speaker 2: but it supports two drugstores. One is Foster's Pharmacy. It's
- 2:31Speaker 2: owned and run by a young ex-GI pharmacist named Cal Foster.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Next to his wife, Marion, he loves his pharmacy more
- 2:39Speaker 2: than anything on earth. Cal has a soda fountain, but
- 2:42Speaker 2: he lets a kid named Joe handle that. Cal's heart
- 2:46Speaker 2: is with the gleaming scales and the sparkling bottles. That's
- 2:49Speaker 2: where he was the evening it happened, typing a label
- 2:52Speaker 2: for a prescription while Marion waited impatiently.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Cal, you promised. It's 6.30 and you promised.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Okay, honey, I shaved. Did you get my jacket from
- 3:05Speaker 4: the cleaners?
- 3:05Speaker 5: Yes.
- 3:06Speaker 6: It's a half-hour drive to the club and it's 6.30 already.
- 3:10Speaker 7: Are you listening?
- 3:11Speaker 4: I'll just be a second.
- 3:13Speaker 8: Mrs. Peabody lost her digitalis bottle. She's about to have
- 3:16Speaker 8: a heart attack worrying about it.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Oh, she's as healthy as a horse.
- 3:20Speaker 6: And you said you'd be ready at 6.30.
- 3:22Speaker 4: We'll just deliver this on the way to the dance.
- 3:24Speaker 6: Oh, no.
- 3:25Speaker 8: It's not far, and she's a nice old gal for
- 3:28Speaker 8: a hypochondriac. Look, why don't you hang up the close
- 3:31Speaker 8: sign on the door? I'll have another customer for sure.
- 3:33Speaker 8: I'll just stick this label on her bottle and put
- 3:35Speaker 8: on my jacket.
- 3:36Speaker 4: Oh, too late.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Tell her you're closed.
- 3:39Speaker 4: I can't do that, darling.
- 3:41Speaker 5: Yes, ma'am. Hello.
- 3:42Speaker 7: Can you fill a prescription for me, for my son?
- 3:45Speaker 8: Well, I think so. Let's see. Tippy Smith, Elixir, Phenobarbital, Tincture, Belladonna.
- 3:52Speaker 8: What's the matter, fella?
- 3:53Speaker 4: Stomachache?
- 3:53Speaker 9: No, I'm okay.
- 3:55Speaker 5: He isn't either.
- 3:56Speaker 7: He just doesn't like medicine, that's all.
- 3:58Speaker 5: But the minute we get back on the road, he'll
- 4:00Speaker 5: be miserable.
- 4:00Speaker 4: Well, this will make him feel better. Hey, San Francisco
- 4:03Speaker 4: doctor wrote this?
- 4:04Speaker 5: Yes.
- 4:05Speaker 7: I meant to have it filled there, but I got
- 4:06Speaker 7: a wire my husband's due back from Japan. He's a
- 4:09Speaker 7: Navy man.
- 4:10Speaker 5: What with packing the car to go and meet him
- 4:11Speaker 5: and getting Tip out of school and everything, I forgot.
- 4:14Speaker 5: And now he's got the stomachache again.
- 4:16Speaker 7: And I'm trying to make another hundred miles tonight.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Well, we'll fix him up.
- 4:20Speaker 5: How much will it be?
- 4:22Speaker 4: Let's see, about $ 1.
- 4:23Speaker 10: 75.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Just take a minute.
- 4:26Speaker 5: Gosh, he's a rugged guy.
- 4:28Speaker 7: A kid has to be rugged for this sort of life.
- 4:31Speaker 7: He's lived in half a dozen towns since he was born.
- 4:33Speaker 5: No wonder he gets the stomachache.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Oh, he must get bored on the road.
- 4:37Speaker 5: Oh, he sure does.
- 4:38Speaker 7: But we listen to the radio and think up riddles
- 4:40Speaker 7: and name cars. He knows every make of car on
- 4:43Speaker 7: the road.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Uh, where are you headed now?
- 4:45Speaker 7: Oh, the ship's coming in descent. Tippi, leave the comic
- 4:48Speaker 7: book alone. You have a dozen in the car.
- 4:50Speaker 11: Okay.
- 4:52Speaker 6: Hey, Mom.
- 4:53Speaker 5: Yes?
- 4:53Speaker 9: I don't really need the medicine.
- 4:55Speaker 3: I feel all right.
- 4:56Speaker 7: Well, you're going to take it, just the same.
- 4:59Speaker 4: All right, now, just make up a label. You can
- 5:00Speaker 4: get it back on the road. Let's see.
- 5:03Speaker 8: Fifteen drops of glass of water every four hours, 7
- 5:06Speaker 8: and 11 p.m., 3 and 7.
- 5:10Speaker 4: You can start now if you want. It's almost seven,
- 5:11Speaker 4: and then you won't have to stop on the road
- 5:13Speaker 4: for a glass of water.
- 5:14Speaker 5: Oh, that's a good idea.
- 5:15Speaker 9: Well, I don't think it is. It isn't time anyway.
- 5:17Speaker 5: Well, it's almost time.
- 5:19Speaker 8: Oh, no.
- 5:19Speaker 9: Hey, Mom, while we're driving, we can play the game.
- 5:23Speaker 9: Like the other time. You know, when I lose, I'll
- 5:25Speaker 9: take the medicine.
- 5:26Speaker 5: Oh, all right.
- 5:34Speaker 4: There we are. Oh, excuse me just a minute.
- 5:39Speaker 12: Hello.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Oh, that horrible phone.
- 5:42Speaker 6: I'm trying to get him to a dinner dance for
- 5:43Speaker 6: the first time in two years. It's like getting a
- 5:45Speaker 6: date with Marlon Brando.
- 5:46Speaker 5: Well, at least your husband's home nights.
- 5:48Speaker 12: I know.
- 5:49Speaker 5: It must be awful.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Oh, here, I'll put on the label and you can go.
- 5:52Speaker 3: How much did he say it would be?
- 5:56Speaker 12: $ 175.
- 5:56Speaker 7: Out of two, as they say.
- 6:00Speaker 6: Oh, and it looks as if Tippy's brought a comic book,
- 6:03Speaker 6: after all, with his dirty hands.
- 6:04Speaker 4: All over it.
- 6:05Speaker 3: The comic book Tippy's on me.
- 6:07Speaker 7: Oh, well, thank you.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Thanks.
- 6:08Speaker 9: Thanks a lot.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Good luck.
- 6:10Speaker 9: Have a good trip.
- 6:12Speaker 4: Yes, Mrs. Piedmont.
- 6:13Speaker 11: I'm sorry.
- 6:14Speaker 4: And I won't forget to drop it off. Goodbye. Oh,
- 6:18Speaker 4: what a character. Where's our customer?
- 6:22Speaker 3: I gave her the medicine and she left.
- 6:23Speaker 4: You gave it to her? What do you mean?
- 6:24Speaker 3: Well, I sold it to her, I mean. I pasted
- 6:27Speaker 3: on the label and sold it to her.
- 6:28Speaker 4: You what? Look, Marion, don't you ever, ever label a
- 6:32Speaker 4: bottle in this store. Do you understand?
- 6:34Speaker 7: Well, Cal, don't.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Look at me that way. That gold my eye.
- 6:37Speaker 4: I mean it, Marion.
- 6:38Speaker 3: I'm sorry if I usurped any of your prerogatives, Pastor.
- 6:42Speaker 6: I didn't know it took a registered pharmacist to lick
- 6:44Speaker 6: a label.
- 6:44Speaker 4: Well, in my store, it does. Okay, let's forget it.
- 6:49Speaker 4: Where's my jacket?
- 6:50Speaker 3: In the back.
- 6:57Speaker 7: Here.
- 6:58Speaker 8: Here.
- 6:59Speaker 6: Are you sure you don't want to wear your white
- 7:01Speaker 6: coat so people will know you're a druggist?
- 7:03Speaker 3: A pharmacist, I mean.
- 7:04Speaker 4: All right, that's enough of that.
- 7:08Speaker 10: Okay.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Are we all set? Safe lock, files closed, lights out.
- 7:13Speaker 4: Let's roll, doll.
- 7:15Speaker 6: Has the stern disciple of Hy-G forgotten something?
- 7:18Speaker 13: Ooh, Mrs.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Peabody's digitalis. She'll murder me. Just a second. Marion.
- 7:32Speaker 6: What?
- 7:32Speaker 4: What bottle did you give that woman?
- 7:34Speaker 3: What is it, Cal?
- 7:35Speaker 4: What do you mean? That woman, we've got to stop her.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Where was she parked? Where'd she go?
- 7:38Speaker 5: What is it?
- 7:39Speaker 4: The bottle that's left on the sink. It's the kid's medicine.
- 7:41Speaker 4: You gave her the digitalis.
- 7:43Speaker 5: Now, where are they?
- 7:44Speaker 6: No, Cal, I took the bottle that was there.
- 7:45Speaker 3: There were two bottles there, Marion, and two labels.
- 7:48Speaker 8: The belladonna's left and the digitalis label.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Do you understand?
- 7:51Speaker 6: Oh, Cal.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Did she say where she was heading?
- 7:53Speaker 3: To meet her husband.
- 7:54Speaker 9: To meet his ship.
- 7:55Speaker 4: I know, but where?
- 7:56Speaker 3: I don't think she said.
- 7:58Speaker 11: Think, think. What?
- 8:00Speaker 3: She started to tell me, and then the boy, Tippy,
- 8:04Speaker 3: it was.
- 8:04Speaker 4: Come on, come on.
- 8:05Speaker 3: He picked up a magazine. I can't remember, gal. Maybe
- 8:09Speaker 3: she didn't say.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Oh, Lord, digitalis.
- 8:12Speaker 3: If he takes it, what'll it do?
- 8:13Speaker 4: And that dosage would probably kill him.
- 8:33Speaker 5: Mom?
- 8:34Speaker 6: Yes?
- 8:35Speaker 9: You think Dad'll know me?
- 8:37Speaker 5: What do you mean, will Dad know you?
- 8:39Speaker 9: Will he?
- 8:41Speaker 7: Well, of course he'll know you.
- 8:42Speaker 5: Why wouldn't he?
- 8:42Speaker 9: Well, you said once he wouldn't.
- 8:45Speaker 5: I didn't.
- 8:46Speaker 9: Well, that time he called from Japan. You said he
- 8:48Speaker 9: wouldn't know me now. Well, you did.
- 8:50Speaker 5: Oh, Tippi. That's just something people say.
- 8:55Speaker 7: Of course he'll know you. Oh, and you and he
- 8:58Speaker 7: have lots of fun together before he leaves again. Turn
- 9:03Speaker 7: on the radio.
- 9:04Speaker 10: Okay.
- 9:19Speaker 13: And for Mark and Jim and the guys and dolls
- 9:23Speaker 13: and the Maxwell driving... Hey, kids, now you watch that movie,
- 9:26Speaker 13: now you hear me. And for the captains of the
- 9:29Speaker 13: Upper Valley... And for Matilda, from her mother on her 16th,
- 9:33Speaker 13: for sweet 16. Sweet 16 to you. And for Donnie.
- 9:39Speaker 5: Oh, we don't want that, Tippy. Try something else.
- 9:41Speaker 11: Just going to play the kind of crazy wax.
- 9:44Speaker 13: That's what it's going to do.
- 9:49Speaker 11: We got a real good one for you.
- 9:50Speaker 9: That's all I get, Mom.
- 9:52Speaker 13: So from Al, your DJ pal, and KRMX, the voice
- 9:56Speaker 13: of the valley, here we are with Perfidium.
- 10:00Speaker 7: How's your stomach?
- 10:00Speaker 9: Well, it doesn't hurt a bit. I feel just fine. Boy,
- 10:04Speaker 9: it's a nice night, isn't it?
- 10:05Speaker 10: Mm-hmm.
- 10:06Speaker 9: Do you like to drive, Mom?
- 10:08Speaker 5: Uh-huh.
- 10:09Speaker 9: When I get older, I'll help you with the driving.
- 10:11Speaker 9: Jimmy drives for his folks sometimes.
- 10:14Speaker 5: Hmm, he's three years older than you. And anyway, that's
- 10:17Speaker 5: too young.
- 10:17Speaker 9: Hey, look at that lake over.
- 10:19Speaker 11: There, Mom.
- 10:20Speaker 5: Tippy. What? Stop it.
- 10:23Speaker 13: What?
- 10:24Speaker 7: You're trying to make me forget about the medicine, aren't you?
- 10:26Speaker 9: You said we could play the game before I had
- 10:28Speaker 9: to take the medicine.
- 10:30Speaker 5: Oh, all right. We'll start now. How many out-of-state licenses?
- 10:34Speaker 12: Five.
- 10:35Speaker 7: We won't see five in an hour.
- 10:37Speaker 6: Two.
- 10:38Speaker 9: Oh, no, you'll see two right away.
- 10:40Speaker 12: Three. All right.
- 10:42Speaker 7: Now, when I see three, you have to take your medicine.
- 10:45Speaker 5: And what do you know?
- 10:46Speaker 7: You see that car ahead?
- 10:48Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:49Speaker 9: Oh, Mom, that isn't fair.
- 10:50Speaker 5: Not the first car.
- 10:51Speaker 9: We didn't really start yet.
- 10:52Speaker 5: Oh, yes, we did.
- 10:54Speaker 7: See?
- 10:55Speaker 5: Ohio.
- 10:56Speaker 9: One down, two to go. No more out-of-states.
- 11:01Speaker 10: Uh-oh.
- 11:02Speaker 7: That doesn't look like a California plate to me, is it?
- 11:04Speaker 3: Oh, yes, it is, Mom.
- 11:06Speaker 5: Oh, you're right. Well, still two to go.
- 11:09Speaker 7: Oh, the things I have to do to make you
- 11:12Speaker 7: take a perfectly harmless little medicine.
- 11:14Speaker 9: I don't like that junk.
- 11:15Speaker 5: I'm beginning to believe that.
- 11:18Speaker 13: All right, all right. Now, let's stop that record. Our
- 11:22Speaker 13: goofy engineer, he put the... I wanted Artie Shaw's perfidia. Well,
- 11:26Speaker 13: which one's that? Is that that Perez somebody or something?
- 11:29Speaker 13: It sounded like a free holy spin in there or something.
- 11:32Speaker 11: Well, anyway, folks, you guys and.
- 11:35Speaker 13: Dolls, this is Olad, your DJ pal, and I've got
- 11:37Speaker 13: time for a couple of more phone requests here before
- 11:40Speaker 13: the 7 o'clock news.
- 11:42Speaker 11: Hey, here's a call. One of the buttons there. Let
- 11:44Speaker 11: me get the... Hello? Hello, who's this? Mom?
- 11:47Speaker 5: Yes?
- 11:48Speaker 9: How far do we have to go?
- 11:49Speaker 5: Tonight?
- 11:50Speaker 7: Oh, about 100 miles.
- 11:52Speaker 9: When do we get to San Diego?
- 11:54Speaker 7: Oh, Tippi, what's wrong?
- 11:56Speaker 5: Oh, nothing.
- 11:57Speaker 7: Does your stomach ache again?
- 11:58Speaker 9: Oh, no, honest, Mom, I'm okay.
- 12:00Speaker 3: It doesn't hurt at all.
- 12:02Speaker 9: I want us to play the game.
- 12:03Speaker 5: It does hurt, doesn't it? Oh, I think we'd better
- 12:06Speaker 5: stop at the next place and give you those drops.
- 12:24Speaker 2: You are listening to To None, A Deadly Drug. Tonight's
- 12:28Speaker 2: presentation in radio's outstanding theater of thrills, Suspense. Listen in
- 12:42Speaker 2: twice every weekend for exciting dramas of Gunsmoke.
- 12:45Speaker 4: On CBS Radio.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Listen Saturday in the daytime when United States Marshal Matt
- 12:50Speaker 2: Dillon fights to hold the frontier against spoilers and outlaws.
- 12:54Speaker 2: And listen again Sunday night on most of these same
- 12:56Speaker 2: stations for an entirely new story of Gunsmoke in America's
- 13:00Speaker 2: early west. Make Gunsmoke a listening habit, and you'll readily
- 13:03Speaker 2: appreciate the sentiments of critics who have given this thrilling,
- 13:06Speaker 2: realistic program their generous applause.
- 13:09Speaker 4: Gunsmoke, at the star's address.
- 13:12Speaker 2: And now we bring back to our Hollywood soundstage Harry Bartell,
- 13:16Speaker 2: starring in tonight's production, To None a Deadly Drug. A
- 13:21Speaker 2: tale well calculated to keep you in suspense. There are
- 13:42Speaker 2: certain things a druggist learns in the School of Pharmacy.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Certain things that have nothing to do with chemistry or
- 13:47Speaker 2: toxicology or physiology. He learns the code of ethics, and
- 13:52Speaker 2: he reads the oath of Hippocrates, and he knows that
- 13:55Speaker 2: it applies to him as well as to the physician.
- 13:59Speaker 2: To none will I give a deadly drug, even if solicited,
- 14:04Speaker 2: nor will I counsel such. To none a deadly drug. Yes,
- 14:11Speaker 2: there are certain things a druggist learns in the School
- 14:13Speaker 2: of Pharmacy. But no one tells him how to track
- 14:16Speaker 2: down a woman with a common name driving an unknown
- 14:19Speaker 2: car on any one of three heavily traveled routes toward
- 14:23Speaker 2: an unknown destination.
- 14:25Speaker 4: For that, he gets the sheriff.
- 14:33Speaker 8: No, she didn't say where she was heading. You're sure
- 14:35Speaker 8: she didn't tell your wife while you were in the
- 14:37Speaker 8: back there?
- 14:37Speaker 4: Marion can't remember. Is she okay? She kind of just
- 14:41Speaker 4: sits there. A little shocked, maybe.
- 14:44Speaker 8: Foster, I just don't see how you expect us to
- 14:47Speaker 8: stop this woman. We got no license number, no make
- 14:49Speaker 8: of car, last name is Smith. You don't know where
- 14:52Speaker 8: she's heading, and with the traffic that we have here,
- 14:54Speaker 8: I don't know... We've got to stop her. What time
- 14:56Speaker 8: is it?
- 14:58Speaker 4: Ten to seven. You said the first dose was at seven?
- 15:01Speaker 4: That's right.
- 15:04Speaker 11: Hello.
- 15:05Speaker 13: Mr.
- 15:05Speaker 5: Foster?
- 15:06Speaker 4: Yes, yes.
- 15:07Speaker 7: Ready on your call to San Francisco.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Oh, thank you. Hello, Dr.
- 15:11Speaker 12: Peters?
- 15:11Speaker 10: Yes.
- 15:12Speaker 11: This is Dr. Peters.
- 15:13Speaker 8: Doctor, this is Cal Foster. I got your number from
- 15:15Speaker 8: a prescription. I'm a pharmacist in Manxville, Foster's Pharmacy.
- 15:18Speaker 12: Yes?
- 15:19Speaker 8: You treated a child named Tippy Smith, about 12 or 13,
- 15:23Speaker 8: a Navy man's son. You wrote a prescription for belladonna
- 15:25Speaker 8: and phenobarbital.
- 15:27Speaker 11: I think I recall.
- 15:28Speaker 6: Go ahead.
- 15:29Speaker 8: Well, my wife... I made a mistake. He got digitalis instead,
- 15:33Speaker 8: the same dosage.
- 15:34Speaker 12: What?
- 15:34Speaker 4: Digitalis.
- 15:36Speaker 11: A well-built, rugged boy, blonde hair, pretty mother?
- 15:39Speaker 4: Yes, that's right.
- 15:40Speaker 11: As I remember.
- 15:42Speaker 13: Is he alive?
- 15:42Speaker 4: We can't find them. They're on the road. That's why
- 15:44Speaker 4: I called.
- 15:45Speaker 11: Well, I'll do anything I can.
- 15:47Speaker 4: Did you tell us in that dossier? Do you know
- 15:48Speaker 4: anything about them? Where they might be going? They'll make
- 15:50Speaker 4: a car.
- 15:51Speaker 5: No.
- 15:52Speaker 13: Well, they were new in the city the first visit
- 15:54Speaker 13: to me. Look, I'm at home, but her address will
- 15:56Speaker 13: be in my files downtown.
- 15:58Speaker 8: Just a minute, please. Sheriff, if we get her address,
- 16:00Speaker 8: can we find her license number? Well, sure, from Sacramento,
- 16:02Speaker 8: if it's a California license and if it's current. But
- 16:05Speaker 8: it'll take time. It's too long, and that's for sure.
- 16:07Speaker 8: We've got to try. Doctor, will you get her address?
- 16:10Speaker 11: I'm on my way. I'll call back.
- 16:13Speaker 4: I don't know what we can do until we find
- 16:14Speaker 4: that license number.
- 16:16Speaker 8: Can't you set up roadblocks? Call the State Highway Patrol.
- 16:19Speaker 8: Where are we going to set up those blocks? Well,
- 16:21Speaker 8: she's only been gone 20 minutes. How far has she driven? 12,
- 16:24Speaker 8: 15 miles, maybe. But which road? We don't even know
- 16:28Speaker 8: where she's heading. Husband's ship was coming in. Where would
- 16:31Speaker 8: a Navy ship come in?
- 16:32Speaker 4: That's easy. San Diego, Long Beach, San Pedro, Port One Amy.
- 16:36Speaker 8: She's on 399 or 99 or maybe 466.
- 16:39Speaker 4: Now, we don't know.
- 16:40Speaker 8: So I call the Highway Patrol for an all-points bulletin.
- 16:43Speaker 8: I want a roadblock for a woman and a kid.
- 16:45Speaker 8: No car description, no license number.
- 16:46Speaker 4: We don't know what road they're on. They're gonna laugh
- 16:48Speaker 4: at me.
- 16:50Speaker 8: It's too late anyway, Foster. We only got three patrolmen
- 16:53Speaker 8: who could even get in the vicinity. You gotta forget
- 16:55Speaker 8: the roadblock.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Well, we've got to do something. We can't sit here
- 16:58Speaker 4: and let this kid kill himself in five minutes. All right,
- 17:00Speaker 4: what do we do?
- 17:02Speaker 3: They're probably playing their game.
- 17:04Speaker 5: Mrs.
- 17:04Speaker 3: Smith and Tippy.
- 17:05Speaker 10: What?
- 17:06Speaker 4: Their game. What game?
- 17:07Speaker 6: They were going to play a game before he had
- 17:09Speaker 6: to take his medicine. When he lost the game, he
- 17:12Speaker 6: had to take it.
- 17:13Speaker 4: Foster, you better do something for your wife. All right,
- 17:15Speaker 4: now look, Marion, snap out of it, do you hear?
- 17:18Speaker 3: They were going to play a game.
- 17:19Speaker 6: He gets bored on the road, so they play games.
- 17:22Speaker 3: And listen to the radio.
- 17:23Speaker 4: They do what?
- 17:24Speaker 3: Play games and listen to the radio.
- 17:26Speaker 8: Sheriff, the radio, KRNX, we can call them. Yeah, yeah,
- 17:30Speaker 8: you know, that might work at that. That's the only
- 17:32Speaker 8: station most people can get in the valley on their
- 17:34Speaker 8: car radios anyway.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Here, give me the phone. Come on, come on.
- 17:46Speaker 13: Operator.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Give me KRNX.
- 17:48Speaker 5: The radio station?
- 17:49Speaker 4: That's right, quick.
- 17:50Speaker 3: You can dial that number, sir.
- 17:52Speaker 4: Look, this is Sheriff Gibbs, and I haven't got time.
- 17:54Speaker 4: Now get it.
- 17:55Speaker 13: Just a moment, sir.
- 18:00Speaker 5: The line's busy, sir.
- 18:03Speaker 7: It's their disc jockey.
- 18:05Speaker 5: He takes phone requests. He's always busy when he's on.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Look, this is an emergency. I want you to break in.
- 18:10Speaker 5: I'll try again, sir.
- 18:26Speaker 13: Hello, this is Al, your DJ pal.
- 18:28Speaker 11: What's your musical pleasure?
- 18:29Speaker 4: This is Sheriff Gibbs. I want you to make an announcement.
- 18:32Speaker 11: Oh, yeah, sure. It's Sheriff Gibbs. Sheriff Gibbs, kids. And
- 18:38Speaker 11: he wants to make an announcement. Uh, you running for.
- 18:41Speaker 4: Sheriff again, Sheriff? Listen, Joker, this is Gibbs, and it
- 18:44Speaker 4: is an emergency.
- 18:45Speaker 11: Oh, yeah, yeah, I know.
- 18:46Speaker 13: He says it's an emergency, Katz. There's one in every crowd, kid.
- 18:51Speaker 13: Somebody's always got to get in the act.
- 18:53Speaker 4: Now, look, fella, just let me have your request.
- 18:56Speaker 11: Come on, now.
- 18:57Speaker 4: I got all the phones going here. Hello, Al.
- 18:59Speaker 11: Al, will you shut up?
- 19:02Speaker 8: This is Cal Foster at the pharmacy. I just sold
- 19:04Speaker 8: the wrong medicine to a woman named Smith for her son.
- 19:07Speaker 4: They're on the road now. We can't contact them.
- 19:10Speaker 8: He's supposed to take it at 7.
- 19:11Speaker 4: We think they might be listening.
- 19:12Speaker 11: Are you serious?
- 19:14Speaker 4: Of course I'm serious.
- 19:15Speaker 8: I want you to announce that the medicine just sold
- 19:17Speaker 8: to a Mrs. Smith at Foster's Pharmacy in Manxville is
- 19:20Speaker 8: the wrong medicine.
- 19:21Speaker 4: It's deadly. She's to call me immediately.
- 19:24Speaker 11: Well, yeah, I.
- 19:25Speaker 13: Got it, but listen, if you think I'm sticking my
- 19:28Speaker 13: neck out for a lawsuit on account of a phone call,
- 19:30Speaker 13: you're nuts, but you're nuts.
- 19:32Speaker 11: How do I know you're Foster?
- 19:35Speaker 8: I sold you $ 10 worth of wheat germ last week,
- 19:37Speaker 8: you remember?
- 19:37Speaker 10: Uh.
- 19:39Speaker 11: Oh, wait, Germ.
- 19:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess you did.
- 19:49Speaker 13: Well, kids, I guess you're kind of curious. You heard
- 19:53Speaker 13: one side of a pretty strange conversation. Now then, your
- 19:57Speaker 13: old pal is going to stick his neck way out
- 19:59Speaker 13: and make an announcement.
- 20:01Speaker 11: If I'm not on the air tomorrow, it means I
- 20:02Speaker 11: was wrong. The guy that called first really was the sheriff.
- 20:07Speaker 11: Sheriff of Maxville.
- 20:08Speaker 12: I hope.
- 20:10Speaker 11: Because if he asks me to make an important announcement,
- 20:12Speaker 11: and if it's Simone... For heaven's.
- 20:14Speaker 7: Sake, find some music, will you?
- 20:15Speaker 6: Anything.
- 20:16Speaker 5: Silly chatter.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Or turn it off.
- 20:18Speaker 5: Okay.
- 20:19Speaker 9: Hey, where are we?
- 20:22Speaker 7: Oh, somewhere on US-99, going to meet your dad. Man,
- 20:27Speaker 7: what do you think I see on that car up ahead?
- 20:30Speaker 9: Oh, no, it's a California plate.
- 20:32Speaker 5: Oh, no, it isn't.
- 20:34Speaker 7: It's orange and black. It's New York. And that's two plates.
- 20:38Speaker 5: One to go.
- 20:38Speaker 9: Go slower, will you, Mom?
- 20:41Speaker 5: Slower?
- 20:42Speaker 7: So I won't catch up on any more out-of-state cars?
- 20:44Speaker 5: Mm-mm.
- 20:45Speaker 7: You're gonna take your medicine.
- 21:00Speaker 8: Well, Foster, it's almost seven. We'd have heard by now.
- 21:04Speaker 8: I guess they weren't listening to the radio.
- 21:07Speaker 4: I guess not. That announcement, that took guts. I sure
- 21:12Speaker 4: hate to see it get wasted.
- 21:14Speaker 3: I gave him a comic book.
- 21:16Speaker 5: I did, Cal.
- 21:18Speaker 3: I didn't mean to hurt him.
- 21:19Speaker 8: Darling, nobody thinks you meant to hurt him. Here, sit down.
- 21:26Speaker 8: Now take some of this. It'll make you feel better.
- 21:27Speaker 5: No.
- 21:29Speaker 3: No, I'm all right.
- 21:29Speaker 4: I've got to think.
- 21:31Speaker 3: I've got to think.
- 21:33Speaker 5: I've got to think.
- 21:34Speaker 4: Maybe she didn't say where she was going.
- 21:36Speaker 6: Tippy was looking at the magazine. I was by the
- 21:39Speaker 6: cash register. She was about to tell me, and then
- 21:42Speaker 6: she saw Tippy. The ship's coming into.
- 21:47Speaker 6: Into.
- 21:48Speaker 3: San.
- 21:49Speaker 4: San?
- 21:49Speaker 3: San something.
- 21:51Speaker 4: San Pedro, San Diego.
- 21:52Speaker 10: San Pedro.
- 21:53Speaker 4: She'd take 99 of either one. Can you send out
- 21:55Speaker 4: that information for a roadblock?
- 21:56Speaker 8: Yeah, if there's a highway patrol officer on 99, he
- 21:58Speaker 8: might try without a description. But one officer trying to
- 22:00Speaker 8: handle all those cars, I don't know. Well, how about
- 22:02Speaker 8: the places she'd stop? She has to get water for
- 22:04Speaker 8: the kid, for the medicine. Where would she stop? Oh,
- 22:06Speaker 8: there are 10 restaurants to a mile down there. She's
- 22:09Speaker 8: probably around Starrett by now.
- 22:10Speaker 4: Let's see.
- 22:12Speaker 8: How do we tell which one she'd pick? Oh, the
- 22:15Speaker 8: kid might have taken it by now anyway.
- 22:16Speaker 12: All right.
- 22:29Speaker 7: Mom?
- 22:30Speaker 5: Yes?
- 22:30Speaker 9: Suppose I'm well by the time you see the other
- 22:32Speaker 9: license plate. Suppose my stomach doesn't ache anymore.
- 22:35Speaker 3: Yes?
- 22:36Speaker 9: Do I still have to take it?
- 22:38Speaker 5: You sure do.
- 22:39Speaker 7: You don't want to be sick to meet your dad.
- 22:41Speaker 5: Do you? Uh, Mom?
- 22:43Speaker 10: Hmm?
- 22:44Speaker 9: Look what I found in the glove compartment. Your old earring.
- 22:47Speaker 5: Oh, that's interesting.
- 22:48Speaker 9: Look at it, Mom.
- 22:49Speaker 5: Look at it.
- 22:50Speaker 7: What's going on here? Why the sudden interest in my
- 22:53Speaker 7: old jewelry?
- 22:54Speaker 3: Oh, nothing.
- 22:56Speaker 7: Why, you little sneak. That car that passed, it has
- 22:59Speaker 7: a Texas plate.
- 23:00Speaker 9: Well, I almost fooled you.
- 23:01Speaker 5: Okay, it's the medicine for you. It's past seven anyway.
- 23:05Speaker 9: I need a glass of water for it.
- 23:06Speaker 7: Oh, what's up at a restaurant?
- 23:08Speaker 3: There's one.
- 23:09Speaker 5: Oh, it looks pretty scroungy.
- 23:11Speaker 7: Look for a nice one.
- 23:12Speaker 4: Okay, I'll look.
- 23:14Speaker 5: I'll just bet you will.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Name the restaurants, Sheriff. All of them, please.
- 23:30Speaker 4: Well, let's see. There's Teppet's. And then just about a block. Cappy's. Lasky's.
- 23:45Speaker 4: The A.M.
- 23:45Speaker 5: Cafe.
- 23:46Speaker 3: I remember that. Oh, she wouldn't take a boy in there.
- 23:48Speaker 5: It's dirty.
- 23:49Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 23:51Speaker 4: Now, past Starrett. I think it's a Green Bowl.
- 23:55Speaker 12: Yeah. Yeah.
- 23:57Speaker 4: In the Valley Cafe. Look, there's 50 of them.
- 24:00Speaker 5: Oh, please, please.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Further on, let me see. I think that, what's it, Merritt's?
- 24:08Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 24:09Speaker 4: And then Tiny's.
- 24:10Speaker 6: Oh, I remember Tiny's. The big place with all the
- 24:12Speaker 6: glass and the big neon chicken.
- 24:14Speaker 13: On the highway.
- 24:14Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the one.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Okay, I'll give me the phone.
- 24:16Speaker 4: Oh, honey.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Well, that's where I'd stop.
- 24:18Speaker 12: It is.
- 24:37Speaker 7: Yes, ma'am?
- 24:39Speaker 5: How about some ice cream after the medicine tip? Okay.
- 24:42Speaker 3: I want chocolate, please.
- 24:43Speaker 8: All right.
- 24:43Speaker 5: And what would you like? Oh, a dish of vanilla
- 24:45Speaker 5: for me. And a glass of water for my boy's medicine, please.
- 24:48Speaker 9: Oh, I'm okay now, Mom.
- 24:49Speaker 4: I'm honest.
- 24:51Speaker 5: This is like my little boy. They all hate medicine. Oh,
- 24:55Speaker 5: this one's impossible. Thank you. Fifteen drops.
- 25:03Speaker 7: You want to count them, Tip? I might get an
- 25:05Speaker 7: extra one in by mistake.
- 25:06Speaker 4: Oh, no.
- 25:08Speaker 12: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen.
- 25:23Speaker 7: Okay, pal, there it is.
- 25:27Speaker 11: Mom?
- 25:28Speaker 6: Mm-hmm?
- 25:29Speaker 9: It smells funny.
- 25:31Speaker 7: You drink it or I'll tell your dad what a
- 25:32Speaker 7: baby you were about it.
- 25:33Speaker 5: But he's drinking it. All right. Stop. Stop it.
- 25:37Speaker 8: What?
- 25:37Speaker 5: I'm sorry.
- 25:39Speaker 9: Are you Mrs.
- 25:39Speaker 6: Smith?
- 25:40Speaker 5: Yes.
- 25:40Speaker 3: Take the phone.
- 25:41Speaker 5: Take the phone, please. The phone? But how.
- 25:46Speaker 7: Hello?
- 25:46Speaker 1: Oh, no.
- 25:52Speaker 5: No, it couldn't be.
- 25:53Speaker 10: Oh.
- 25:57Speaker 8: Oh.
- 26:00Speaker 10: Oh, yes.
- 26:01Speaker 5: Yes, thank you.
- 26:04Speaker 9: Mom, are you sick?
- 26:07Speaker 4: Sick?
- 26:08Speaker 5: Oh, maybe a little. Maybe just a little bit.
- 26:22Speaker 2: It's news when it happens. A drugstore mistake. Because it
- 26:26Speaker 2: almost never does happen. Stories of mistaken prescriptions in the
- 26:30Speaker 2: profession of pharmacy are practically non-existent.
- 26:33Speaker 4: When it does occur, it can ruin a man.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Because this profession is hard on its own when one
- 26:40Speaker 2: falls short. It can ruin a man. Or it can
- 26:44Speaker 2: mold him.
- 26:48Speaker 3: What'll happen to this, Cal?
- 26:50Speaker 4: This store?
- 26:52Speaker 5: It's your life.
- 26:53Speaker 4: I don't know. I started from scratch once before.
- 26:58Speaker 12: I know.
- 27:00Speaker 5: But it's not fair.
- 27:02Speaker 3: It wasn't your fault at all.
- 27:03Speaker 4: It's my pharmacy, darling. Anyway, don't worry.
- 27:08Speaker 5: Will they take your license?
- 27:10Speaker 4: I don't know. That isn't what matters. It's the people.
- 27:15Speaker 5: The people?
- 27:17Speaker 8: The people we know, my customers. They come in blindly,
- 27:21Speaker 8: they put their lives in my hands. And that's what'll hurt.
- 27:25Speaker 8: Even if I keep my license.
- 27:29Speaker 11: Hello, Mrs. Smith.
- 27:38Speaker 4: Where's Tippy?
- 27:40Speaker 5: In the car. He's tired.
- 27:46Speaker 4: I don't know what to say.
- 27:48Speaker 5: There's nothing to say. And there's nothing for you to
- 27:51Speaker 5: say either, Mrs.
- 27:52Speaker 4: Foster.
- 27:54Speaker 5: I didn't really come all the way back to talk.
- 27:58Speaker 4: Why did you come back, Mrs.
- 27:59Speaker 12: Smith?
- 28:00Speaker 10: Why?
- 28:02Speaker 5: Well, so you could give me Tippy's medicine.
