- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, let's jump right in. We're gonna look at
- 0:03Speaker 1: just two verses from two Timothy. But believe me, these
- 0:07Speaker 1: two verses are absolutely packed. We're talking about suffering, power
- 0:11Speaker 1: and this mind blowing idea of a grace that existed
- 0:13Speaker 1: before time even started. It's a lot, so let's get
- 0:17Speaker 1: into it. So right out of the gate, this passage
- 0:20Speaker 1: just hits you with this staggering command. It says, join
- 0:25Speaker 1: with me and suffering. I mean, seriously, in our world
- 0:29Speaker 1: we do everything we can to avoid pain, right, so
- 0:32Speaker 1: this is just it's a total shock to the system.
- 0:36Speaker 1: You have to ask what could possibly be the reason
- 0:39Speaker 1: for that? And yeah, that's the big question, isn't it.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Why would anyone choose to suffer? To willingly sign up
- 0:46Speaker 1: for a far time? And get this, The text isn't
- 0:48Speaker 1: just suggesting it. It's a command in instruction to actively
- 0:53Speaker 1: join in. It's wild. So let's try and unpack the
- 0:56Speaker 1: logic here because there has to be one. Okay, to
- 1:00Speaker 1: really get this, we've got to look at the command
- 1:02Speaker 1: itself right there in verse eight. It's actually a two
- 1:05Speaker 1: part deal and it kind of sets the stage for
- 1:07Speaker 1: everything else that's coming. And you'll see this really interesting contrast.
- 1:11Speaker 1: It starts with a negative do not be ashamed. So
- 1:14Speaker 1: that's about not feeling a certain way right, an internal thing,
- 1:18Speaker 1: but then bam, it escalates to this really active positive command,
- 1:22Speaker 1: do join with me in suffering. See that shift. It
- 1:25Speaker 1: goes from an internal feeling to a very real external action.
- 1:29Speaker 1: So why with all this for? The text is super
- 1:33Speaker 1: clear it's for the Gospel, and this is absolutely crucial.
- 1:37Speaker 1: This is not a call to suffer just for the
- 1:39Speaker 1: sake of suffering, No way. The Gospel is the whole point.
- 1:42Speaker 1: It's the testimony, the news about Jesus. That's the one
- 1:45Speaker 1: and only reason given for taking on this hardship. Okay,
- 1:49Speaker 1: so don't be ashamed and do suffer for this message.
- 1:52Speaker 1: The immediate logical next question is how, I mean, how
- 1:57Speaker 1: on earth is anyone supposed to do that? The cool
- 1:59Speaker 1: thing is the text knows you're gonna askpet It actually
- 2:03Speaker 1: anticipates the question and gives us the answer. It doesn't
- 2:06Speaker 1: just leave you hanging expecting you to figure it out yourself. Nope.
- 2:10Speaker 1: The how to God, the power source, it's right there
- 2:13Speaker 1: in the very same sentence, and boom there it is
- 2:17Speaker 1: by the power God, the command to suffer is immediately
- 2:20Speaker 1: paired with a way to actually do it. And this
- 2:23Speaker 1: is the key takeaway, right, This is not about you
- 2:25Speaker 1: gritting your teeth and mustering up your own courage. The
- 2:28Speaker 1: power source is external. It's from God. But you know,
- 2:33Speaker 1: the power of God can sound a little vague, can it?
- 2:37Speaker 1: So what does that actually mean here? Well, the passage
- 2:41Speaker 1: doesn't just leave it hanging there. Verse nine jumps right
- 2:44Speaker 1: in and explains the foundation for this power. It all
- 2:48Speaker 1: comes down to two things God has already done for us.
- 2:52Speaker 1: This power is on the table because, as the text says,
- 2:55Speaker 1: he has saved us and he has called us to
- 2:59Speaker 1: a holy life. Notice the tense there has saved has called.
- 3:03Speaker 1: These aren't things that might happen in the future. They're
- 3:05Speaker 1: done deals, completed actions, and that our salvation are calling.
- 3:10Speaker 1: That's the bedrock, that's what plugs us into the power
- 3:13Speaker 1: we need to endure. All right, now we're getting to
- 3:16Speaker 1: be absolute core of it, the real engine of this
- 3:20Speaker 1: whole passage. The author makes a distinction here that honestly
- 3:23Speaker 1: changes everything. It's this huge idea of grace versus works.
- 3:28Speaker 1: And to make sure we don't get this wrong, the
- 3:30Speaker 1: text starts by telling us what our salvation is not
- 3:33Speaker 1: based on. It just clears the table of any confusion
- 3:36Speaker 1: right from the get go. Okay, before we see the
- 3:38Speaker 1: big contrast, let's nail down this word grace, because it's
- 3:42Speaker 1: not just some nice, fluffy religious term. It means unearned, undeserved.
- 3:47Speaker 1: It's a gift you did absolutely nothing to earn and
- 3:49Speaker 1: could never earn on your own. Got it. Let's keep
- 3:53Speaker 1: that definition front and center so here. It is the
- 3:56Speaker 1: main event our salvation are calling. It is not because
- 4:01Speaker 1: of anything we have done, not our works, not our efforts.
- 4:05Speaker 1: The reason, the only reason, is because of his own
- 4:08Speaker 1: purpose and his grace. It's all about his innership, not
- 4:12Speaker 1: our performance. And that that changes everything. And just when
- 4:16Speaker 1: you think your mind is already blown, the passage zooms
- 4:20Speaker 1: way way out. It shows us just how old, how cosmic,
- 4:24Speaker 1: this plan of grace really is. I mean, this is
- 4:26Speaker 1: not something that just happened recently. So you got to ask, right,
- 4:30Speaker 1: if this grace is the foundation of it all, when
- 4:32Speaker 1: when did we get it? And the answer the text
- 4:35Speaker 1: gives is honestly one of the most profound things you'll
- 4:37Speaker 1: ever read. Just look at this. The text says, this
- 4:41Speaker 1: grace was given to us before the beginning of time.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Let that sink in for a second. That is just staggering.
- 4:51Speaker 1: This means it wasn't some plan, be that God cooked
- 4:53Speaker 1: up effuity, something that existed before creation itself, that then
- 4:57Speaker 1: showed up in our timeline in history through Jesus Christ. Okay,
- 5:01Speaker 1: so let's put all the pieces together. Let's trace the
- 5:04Speaker 1: logic here. Step one, there's an eternal grace given before
- 5:08Speaker 1: time even existed. Step two, that same grace is what
- 5:11Speaker 1: saves us and calls us right now. And step three,
- 5:14Speaker 1: that reality, that connection to eternal grace is what gives
- 5:18Speaker 1: us the power to endure suffering for the Gospel, see
- 5:21Speaker 1: how it all connects. So if there's one thing to
- 5:23Speaker 1: really walk away with, it's this, the strength to face hardship,
- 5:28Speaker 1: to suffer well. It does not come from inside you.
- 5:31Speaker 1: It's not about your own grit. It comes from connecting
- 5:34Speaker 1: to a reality that has nothing to do with how
- 5:36Speaker 1: well you perform. It's reality that's rooted in God's eternal
- 5:39Speaker 1: purpose and his totally unearned grace, and that leaves us
- 5:43Speaker 1: with a pretty powerful thought to chew on. If the
- 5:46Speaker 1: grace that saves you, the grace that empowers you was
- 5:49Speaker 1: put in place before the universe was even a thing.
- 5:52Speaker 1: How does that change the way you look at the
- 5:53Speaker 1: suffering you might face today. What does it mean to
- 5:56Speaker 1: walk through temporary, earthly problems when you're held by a
- 5:59Speaker 1: grace that is eternal and absolutely unshakable.
