- 0:23We've finished reading the International Booker Prize 2026
- 0:26shortlist. This award recognised the vital
- 0:28work of translation in the UK and Ireland.
- 0:31In this episode, we are discussing what we think is
- 0:34going to win and what books we enjoyed the most.

- 0:50I'm Lucy and I have read all six of the books this year.
- 0:56Notably, there's a little dig to everybody else involved in this
- 0:59project. I didn't think they were as good
- 1:01as last year. I thought that last year had
- 1:04very good books. We shout out to Leopard Skin Hat
- 1:07and also a little shout out to a small book.
- 1:09But I did enjoy a lot of them. Hi I'm Colin at C under score.
- 1:16F under score writes on Instagram and I've read 3 of the
- 1:19books so almost I've read half of them.
- 1:23I know Lucy believes that I am a failure.
- 1:26Umm, but I, uh, generally, I actually liked all the books I
- 1:31did read. Umm, and I think, uh, while I
- 1:34think there was more variety, maybe, I don't know, it wasn't
- 1:37more variety in last year's. It felt more widely spread in
- 1:40terms of themes and experimental novels and stuff.
- 1:43I, I like these a lot more. I think they were more enjoyable
- 1:46to me to read than last year's books.
- 1:49Last year's felt like almost heavier at times and a bit more
- 1:53arduous, and this did feel like a bit lighter, at least the
- 1:56three that I read, which I kind of appreciated, especially when
- 1:59times are dark in the world right now and it's nice to kind
- 2:02of get a breakthrough some reading.
- 2:04I'm broadcast journalist Aaron Rice at Aaron Rice Media and I
- 2:09have completed three books out of the six and I have partially
- 2:13read 2 of the other books out of the six.
- 2:17So all together I have read about 5 books on the list.
- 2:23There's one that I haven't touched and I actually really
- 2:27enjoyed this shortlist this year.
- 2:29Now, I don't think any of them are perfect.
- 2:31None of them are five stars. I think last year had higher
- 2:34highs and lower lows. And all of these are pretty
- 2:39strong though. And I do agree with Colin that
- 2:42and there was a bit more variety in terms of the experimentalism
- 2:48and different voices that we were getting so excited to dive
- 2:53into this conversation about our predictions.
- 2:56Let's quickly run over all of the books that we covered in the
- 3:03order that we covered them. We started off with On Earth As
- 3:06It Is Beneath by Ana Paula Maya, translated from the Portuguese
- 3:10by Padma Veswana and published by Charco Chris.
- 3:13Then we read She Who Remains by Renee Karabash, translated from
- 3:18the Bulgarian by Isidora Angel. It was originally published in
- 3:21Bulgarian in 2018 and published by Pyrenee in 2026.
- 3:26Then we followed it up by reading Taiwan Travelogue by
- 3:29Yang Shangxi, translated from The Mandarin by Lin and
- 3:34published by and other stories. The 4th book that we discussed
- 3:38was The Witch by Marie Anger, translated from the French by
- 3:42Jordan Stump and published by Maclehose Press.
- 3:46Then we read The Nights Are Quiet in Tehran by Sheeta Bazar,
- 3:50translated from German by Ruth Martin.
- 3:53It was originally published in Germany in 2016 and then
- 3:55published by Scribe in 2025. And we finished up our shortlist
- 4:00by reading The Director by Daniel Kalman, translated from
- 4:03the German by Ross Benjamin and published by River Run.
- 4:07So that's the six books from this year's shortlist.
- 4:12Lucy, you're the only one of us that has read every single one.
- 4:17Devotee. Devotee, I have read a mixture
- 4:22of the amounts of of them, some might contain.
- 4:25This. Yeah, and Colin, you have read
- 4:31how many? 3.
- 4:33Three, and Hannah has read five of the six.
- 4:37We are going to rank from our least favorite through to our
- 4:42most favorite. This is not which ones we think
- 4:46will win. That will come next.
- 4:49Well, let's start with our rankings.
- 4:52So let's rank from the bottom up.
- 4:54So number six, Lucy, you're the only person who's read all six,
- 5:00so you can take it away. I feel really horrible saying
- 5:04this because it is literally like the the bottom of my pack
- 5:07is all kind of together. But my least favorite, and it
- 5:10took me so long to read it, was The Nights are Quiet in Tehran.
- 5:16And I think that's quite controversial.
- 5:17I don't think very many people have put that in the last place
- 5:20I there's something happened. I just didn't gel with it.
- 5:23It wasn't for me. So that's my number six.
- 5:25So my number 5 is going to be The Witch.
- 5:30I thought it was a fun little book.
- 5:33Like I didn't hate it, but I just don't think it was fully
- 5:37there. I don't think it was a completed
- 5:40story. I didn't get it and I was kind
- 5:43of disappointed with the pitch that I was sold. #5 is the
- 5:50director. Yeah, I again, it didn't capture
- 5:54me massively and I didn't think, oh, that's shed any new light on
- 5:58anything or enlighten me in any way massively.
- 6:01So I the writing was very the writing was good.
- 6:04But yeah, I just, I, I thought, I find I could have taken that
- 6:07and left at the various points in the book.
- 6:09At #5 I'm going to give it to the witch.
- 6:13It was fine and I like the writing style in it a lot, but I
- 6:16feel like it was just missing something for me.
- 6:18My 4th favorite I am going to go with the Knights are Quiet in
- 6:24Tehran. I did enjoy it, I really did
- 6:27enjoy it and but the story does taper off after the the first
- 6:34part and I have found myself forgetting more and more details
- 6:40of it the further that I have got from having completed it.
- 6:43This is tough. Now I think my number 4 is Talan
- 6:48Travelogue and it surprised me and how enjoyable I found it.
- 6:55And this is like, yeah, I think I think it's pretty good.
- 6:59I'd be very happy if it won. I think it's interesting.
- 7:04It's a good book. I don't think it will win, but I
- 7:07would be happy with it winning. But I like, I didn't mass like
- 7:11it wasn't a massively amazing book, but I still think it was
- 7:13very well read and it was very, very well written and very
- 7:18enjoyable. And yeah, I read it well. #4 I'm
- 7:23going to give it to She Who Remains our My discussion with
- 7:27Lucy made me really think about how much I liked the first half.
- 7:31The second-half got a bit weird but really enjoyed that one in
- 7:35the end and especially when we chatted about it, it made me
- 7:38think about it a bit more so given that #4.
- 7:41I think the witch is my #3 I think I liked the vibes, but I
- 7:46do think it was kind of missing something a bit more.
- 7:49I don't think I was sold the wrong pitch.
- 7:51I just think like, do you know, it is a cool idea, but it just
- 7:55didn't really go anywhere. Really too exciting.
- 7:59My number 3 is going to be Taiwan Travelogue.
- 8:02It was good. It was better than I was
- 8:03expecting it to be. It just isn't my kind of book,
- 8:07but it's it's a decent read. This is where it gets, this is
- 8:11where it gets really tough for me because these three I think
- 8:13are all almost the same level to me.
- 8:16I'm really struggling because I'm to be honest, I'm off the
- 8:19cuff, I keep changing. I was writing down like orders
- 8:22and things for things earlier and I couldn't like agree with
- 8:25myself in an order. So I'm just winging it now.
- 8:28I think I'm going to have to go for On Earth as it is beneath.
- 8:32I don't know that I think it's worse than my top two in any
- 8:34real way because I really enjoyed it and I actually think
- 8:36it has these deeper themes and stuff.
- 8:39Like I think it's a really excellent book, but I maybe
- 8:41think it's missing something. I think the other two maybe
- 8:45have. So for #3 I'm going to give it
- 8:48to On Earth as it is beneath. I really, really enjoyed this
- 8:52one, really liked it. And I really want to even read
- 8:57the book before that and to get to know these characters like
- 9:01slightly more. So I'm sad that I'm not giving a
- 9:05number one, but there's reasons for this.
- 9:07But I really enjoyed this. I think my #2 pick is going to
- 9:14be unearthed as it is beneath, which therefore means the
- 9:17director is my number one pick, which I know Lucy's probably
- 9:21probably reaging on me for. But I think this is kind of how
- 9:24it goes with me and Lucy. We tend to like the complete
- 9:27opposite ends of the scale with these different books when we
- 9:30sometimes agree, but I do think on earth that is as it is.
- 9:33Beneath was a fun read and I really like some of the ideas in
- 9:36it. But again, I think it was just
- 9:38missing something as well. There was like something not
- 9:40quite there. It was almost too short.
- 9:42And it was this sort of like Plot Summary in which we
- 9:45discussed a lot about in the actual episode.
- 9:48And then the reason I think the director is up there is because
- 9:52it just kept me engaged. I generally like Hollywood
- 9:56stories, like I do click with those like actors and directors
- 9:59and I love the creative process. And I think that's what made a
- 10:02kind of win out for me. Again, I think it's an imperfect
- 10:05story and I think retreading like some like, you know, Nazi
- 10:10storylines and stuff like this, it is something I've read
- 10:13before, but I just enjoyed it I think overall, mostly because
- 10:16that's kind of where my my personal interests lie.
- 10:19It's the return of the hive mind.
- 10:21Colin, me and you both ranked the which is our lowest read,
- 10:26and my number 2 is going to be On Earth As It Is Beneath and my
- 10:31number 1 is going to be the director.
- 10:32Now, I haven't finished the director, so just a caveat on
- 10:36that, but I will be finishing it On Earth As It Is Beneath, I
- 10:40think is a fun little book. I don't have any issues with it,
- 10:43which is why it ranked so high, but overall, it's like an action
- 10:47movie in a book. There's not a ton more to it,
- 10:52but what it does, it does extremely well.
- 10:56I don't think it's pretending to be anything that it's not.
- 10:58So that means that the director is my favorite and I was
- 11:04surprised at how much I was enjoying it.
- 11:07The actual integration of people from history.
- 11:13I think that added an extra layer to it that I wasn't
- 11:16expecting until we had our discussion, so that just made me
- 11:20enjoy it even more. I think you might be surprised
- 11:23at this. OK, so I'm going to put The
- 11:25Witch in at #2 I think that The Witch has, I love the writing,
- 11:32like absolutely loved it. But I do think it is missing
- 11:34something. I think that there was like
- 11:37pockets of like brilliance in it, but then it wasn't
- 11:40necessarily the most coherent thing.
- 11:43And then this, this is controversial because of how
- 11:44much I slated it and the episode about it.
- 11:48But I put my number one is she who remains.
- 11:50I think it's stayed with me. I think that I still agree that
- 11:54the second part, there's there's no need for it.
- 11:57And but that first part, the poeticness, the the fact you're
- 12:01completely immersed into a completely different culture and
- 12:04a world that you would never like, you would never see or
- 12:07hear about. It's very rare that sworn
- 12:09virgins are mentioned in the news and they're kind of almost
- 12:12like a an interest piece of like, oh, this is how some
- 12:15people in the world are living and actually to be transported
- 12:18into that world. And the way she tells the story
- 12:21using so few words, especially the start.
- 12:24I mean, for me, the only reason it's not like a five star book
- 12:29is just purely because the second part was spelling out
- 12:32things that we didn't need to know.
- 12:34I think it's stuck with me as like a, wow, that's actually an
- 12:38excellent piece of fiction. So that's why my number one is
- 12:41She Who Remains. #2 I'm surprised I'm saying this, but
- 12:44Taiwan travelogue because at the time I thought it was really
- 12:47hard to get into at moments and it felt a bit long.
- 12:51But on reflection, and I've been thinking about it for the last
- 12:55week or so, I I did enjoy it. And when we chatted about it, I
- 13:00think I felt like I really enjoyed it even more.
- 13:03So I'm going to give that my number two spot.
- 13:06And guys, if you've listened to the podcast, it is no surprise
- 13:10that number 1 is going to be the nights are quite interad.
- 13:16I adore this book. I love it.
- 13:18I know the writing is not as good as say, like the witch, but
- 13:23the story just yeah, it's really stuck with me because I'd lost
- 13:27all hope that the international Booker was going to have
- 13:30something this year that stuck with me.
- 13:32But we hit it out of the bag at the last minute.
- 13:35So my number one is the nights are quiet in Tehran.
- 13:39So that's our rankings. What do we all think of of what
- 13:42each other picked? I think it's questionable as
- 13:45well that you both read the man novel.
- 13:47The Man novel. The novel written by a man
- 13:51that's just very, very. Why were the rest all written by
- 13:53women? Yeah, just ver just notable
- 13:56notable, I think. And it's, it's interesting that
- 13:58you've put that as #1 as well. That's just interesting, isn't
- 14:01it? It's just very interesting.
- 14:03We can't help if the man's book was our favorite.
- 14:09It's the Man Booker Prize, Lucy. Not anymore, Colin, We got rid
- 14:14of the man. This isn't a women's prize for
- 14:17fiction. Lucy I.
- 14:19Don't know, I think you'd find a way to to vote a man number one
- 14:23or not. I just think, I think it's
- 14:25notable for all the podcast listeners that male men, Colin
- 14:31and Aaron, Male men, 2 meals, 2 Male men Colin, both read the
- 14:41man's book and I remember speaking to you wasn't going
- 14:44well. I need to make sure I've read
- 14:45the man's book. Both of you said that,
- 14:48especially Colin. Yeah, definitely me, I'll tell
- 14:52you that. I think I'm pretty sure last
- 14:54year Lucy I put a woman book as the my #1.
- 14:58That's pretty. That's very true, Colin, that
- 15:01is. True.
- 15:01So yeah. So you can't be sexist.
- 15:06I can't possibly. No, no, I just, yeah.
- 15:09And I think it's notable that I'd said to Colin before the
- 15:12podcast started, I was like, oh, there's a book called She Who
- 15:14Remains, and Colin's like she. She hardly nowhere I'll.
- 15:19Really, who remains if you do keep this in Aaron?
- 15:25Just a reminder that I actually don't think that either of you
- 15:29are sexist, but it is notable. It is notable.
- 15:33Good. I'm glad you said that Lucy.
- 15:36So now that we've shared our rankings on our favourites,
- 15:40let's all reveal what books we think will actually win the
- 15:46prize later today. So I mean, I've only read half
- 15:49of them, but I actually think none of the books I read are
- 15:52going to be wonders. I just feel like they just don't
- 15:54seem like they are going to hit the mark.
- 15:59Just the the subject matter and and the sort of stories that the
- 16:02others tell son, like they more they're more fitting of like
- 16:06winning this. Not that I think that that means
- 16:08they're better, but I think just in the track record of the
- 16:11Booker Prize or the international book or press, I
- 16:14think probably something like The Nights Are Quiet in Tehran,
- 16:16even though I've been read, I just have a feeling that that
- 16:18kind of story could, could win. So I'm kind of between 2:00.
- 16:22So I'm between. The nights are quiet in Tehran.
- 16:26I mean, the chances are that there might not win because it's
- 16:29too, too topical. If that's a.
- 16:33Thing, you know, it's maybe a bit too, I don't want to say
- 16:35obvious, but like maybe it is a bit too obvious.
- 16:39So I actually think I think that she Who Remains has a good
- 16:42chance of winning. Do I think it will win?
- 16:44Probably, probably not because I'm guessing it might win.
- 16:46So I actually, to be honest, would just put my money on
- 16:49whatever Aaron says. I think of the three of us that
- 16:51will have the highest chance of winning.
- 16:53Lucy, I'm kind of similar to you and where I am between two books
- 16:58for which I think will win. I'm only saying this in case my
- 17:02second choice wins. And then I could say, look, I
- 17:05was, I was stuck between the two.
- 17:07So that I, I basically won. So my my second choice is the
- 17:13Nights are Quiet in Tehran. The book that I think will
- 17:16actually win is Taiwan Travelogue.
- 17:19And I have the same reasoning for both of these.
- 17:22And I've talked about this and throughout this shortlist
- 17:26looking back on last year, and the winner was Heartlamp, which
- 17:30was a very specific story told from somebody who lived within
- 17:33that culture. So I it kind of changed my
- 17:37understanding of this award. Obviously it's a translation
- 17:41prize. So I think last year at least,
- 17:45the panel of judges had selected the book that was the most
- 17:53unique and most English translation could not have
- 17:57existed without the previous original language version.
- 18:03I have one week question for you, Aaron.
- 18:05You do know it's it's different judges this year?
- 18:08I do know it's different judges so I'm just going based off of
- 18:12last year, but who knows what the judges will will be thinking
- 18:16this year. And I think that both Taiwan
- 18:20Travelogue and The Nights Are Quiet in Tehran give us a very
- 18:24specific look into those cultures.
- 18:26They deal with translation, they deal with language.
- 18:30Because this is a translation prize.
- 18:33I think that's appealing to what the judges will be looking for.
- 18:38So that is why my choice for which I think will win is Taiwan
- 18:44Travelogue. I think maybe She Who Remains or
- 18:49Taiwan Travelogue might be the winner, but in my heart, the
- 18:52real winner this year of the International Booker is the
- 18:55Nights are Quiet in Tehran. I actually think I'd be really
- 18:58surprised at Taiwan Travelogue 1 and I, I, but I'm backing you,
- 19:02Aaron. Why would you be surprised?
- 19:04I think it's too like, I think it does deal with like
- 19:09colonialism and it almost skirts around like really getting
- 19:13massively deep into certain issues.
- 19:15And I'm kind of like usually they kind of go for something a
- 19:17bit more like, OK, that's right at the heart of what's
- 19:20happening. But like in saying that, I
- 19:22don't, I don't think that Taiwan travelogue is like shallow by
- 19:25any means. I just mean that it's kind of
- 19:26like it's like A at times quite very well, times very like
- 19:30lighthearted kind of skip through colonized Taiwan.
- 19:35It doesn't. To me, it doesn't fit in with
- 19:36the other books previously that have won.
- 19:39Again, it's five random people. I think it's almost impossible
- 19:42to guess what's going to win, which is why bookies don't
- 19:45really have very good odds on these kind of things.
- 19:47Well, Speaking of. The Bookies odds Let's take a
- 19:49look and see what the bookies are predicting for which book
- 19:55will win Tai Taiwan. Travelogues 5 to 2 nights are
- 19:59quiet in trance 3 to 1, director 4 to 1 and she remains 5 to one.
- 20:03I'm surprised she remains so far down.
- 20:05This is what I mean. I shouldn't be trying to do
- 20:08these prizes. Check back in with us later this
- 20:10week and we will bring you a reaction episode to the winning
