- 0:15Speaker 2: Oh good day fellas backbone hello good stuff i can't.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Really change the name of the show to that because
- 0:21Speaker 1: that would have not been annoying at all what's that
- 0:24Speaker 1: g'day fellas backbone hello yeah Hello.
- 0:28Speaker 2: I tell you what.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Wait, so that's the name of the whole show?
- 0:31Speaker 1: That used to be. We were tossing that up for
- 0:34Speaker 1: the podcast name. Yeah, right. You know what I mean?
- 0:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:36Speaker 1: This guy gets it.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Fellas, the CBD today, and I think it's because spring
- 0:42Speaker 2: has sprung, was reeking. With the smell of ganja everywhere
- 0:48Speaker 2: you went. And it was like, holy, holy hell.
- 0:52Speaker 1: I was up and down the bastard there, old Queenstree.
- 0:54Speaker 1: I didn't smell any ganja. Oh, man.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Everywhere we went today, it was just a whoop.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Was it you smoking weed, though? It was your missus
- 1:00Speaker 1: smoking weed.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Was that what it was?
- 1:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:03Speaker 2: But also, my wife and I went out and had
- 1:06Speaker 2: a coffee this morning.
- 1:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:08Speaker 2: It was about 10.30, beautiful morning in the city it was.
- 1:11Speaker 1: City of sales.
- 1:12Speaker 2: And we're wandering around and there's this dude and he's
- 1:16Speaker 2: drinking a beer outside the coffee club. And we're like.
- 1:21Speaker 3: On the piss at the coffee club?
- 1:22Speaker 2: I don't think the coffee club sells beers.
- 1:25Speaker 3: I don't think so.
- 1:26Speaker 2: But anyway, and we're like, oh, that's an early start.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:29Speaker 2: And went down to the wharf there and then we
- 1:32Speaker 2: were going back along the bars and there were people
- 1:35Speaker 2: drinking wines and beers and I was like, what the
- 1:38Speaker 2: fuck is going on? It's 10.30 in the morning.
- 1:41Speaker 3: I know what it is.
- 1:43Speaker 2: 10.30 in the morning and then my wife went, well,
- 1:46Speaker 2: you know, it is a really beautiful sunny day and
- 1:49Speaker 2: it's Friday and I was like, it's not fucking Friday.
- 1:52Speaker 3: It's Thursday.
- 1:52Speaker 2: It's Thursday.
- 1:53Speaker 1: You know what it'll be?
- 1:54Speaker 3: It'll be cruise ship people.
- 1:57Speaker 2: But there are no cruise ships. There were the other day.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Right, okay.
- 2:01Speaker 2: But I honestly think it was just the weather. And
- 2:03Speaker 2: people were like, fuck it, should we just have a wine?
- 2:06Speaker 1: A wine? Yeah, that's great.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I've got no issue with it. But
- 2:09Speaker 2: it was just very random.
- 2:10Speaker 1: We've never sort of. That's not wrong.
- 2:12Speaker 2: And, you know, a lot of people, you know, having
- 2:14Speaker 2: their normals on the street there. And I don't know
- 2:18Speaker 2: what dole day was for you, Moby.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Thursday. Thursday for me.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Right.
- 2:22Speaker 2: And then my wife and I, oh, Thursday.
- 2:25Speaker 1: No, I think you're right, actually. Thursday and then your
- 2:27Speaker 1: Tuesday was your DPB, your Domestic Purposes Benefit. And that
- 2:31Speaker 1: would be every fortnight. I don't know if I ever
- 2:33Speaker 1: got that. And then they changed it up towards the
- 2:36Speaker 1: end of my run and they had it that the
- 2:38Speaker 1: paydays wouldn't be on those days that would be spread
- 2:43Speaker 1: across the week so that there wasn't so much of
- 2:44Speaker 1: a stigma attached to it.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Because I knew if you went into the bank or
- 2:48Speaker 1: anything like that and it was those days, then you're
- 2:50Speaker 1: probably a bludger. Yeah, right. Interesting.
- 2:53Speaker 2: I never knew that. What was the DPB?
- 2:55Speaker 1: Domestic Purpose Benefit was for usually, as a rule, a
- 2:58Speaker 1: single mother. Oh, yes. A solo mother. But you figured
- 3:02Speaker 1: out a way to get it. Yeah, I did, man. Yeah.
- 3:05Speaker 1: You latch yourself onto a couple of solo mums, brother.
- 3:08Speaker 1: I tell you what. You're rolling in the cash. No,
- 3:09Speaker 1: he walked in with a pillow up his shirt. Because
- 3:11Speaker 1: that's the thing about solo mums. They have more kids
- 3:13Speaker 1: so that they can be rich, you know?
- 3:14Speaker 3: 100%.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Well, I think we were talking about it the other day,
- 3:17Speaker 2: that guy that did exactly that, that ripped off the
- 3:20Speaker 2: social welfare system And it was lit and had about
- 3:24Speaker 2: 60 different accounts and went and dressed up as these people.
- 3:28Speaker 3: And looked really convincing.
- 3:29Speaker 2: And was convincing. And he was doing such a good
- 3:31Speaker 2: job that he didn't know what to do with all
- 3:33Speaker 2: the money. So he is literally buying gold bullion and putting.
- 3:37Speaker 1: It in his attic.
- 3:38Speaker 2: And he decided to kind of stop and he did
- 3:41Speaker 2: one more or something and that's when they finally got him.
- 3:44Speaker 2: And it was only per chance that they got him
- 3:46Speaker 2: because they were investigating what was going on and they
- 3:48Speaker 2: just couldn't figure it out.
- 3:50Speaker 3: They should make a movie about that.
- 3:52Speaker 2: I think they made a doco about it.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Has they? Yeah, it was fascinating. A Kiwi fella?
- 3:57Speaker 2: A Kiwi fella, yeah. He was making hundreds and hundreds
- 4:00Speaker 2: of thousands.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I knew that story. I just didn't know that they'd
- 4:02Speaker 1: made a doco on him.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Yes, I remember.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Wasn't one of them like his mum?
- 4:07Speaker 2: I can't remember.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Maybe I'm thinking of.
- 4:09Speaker 4: An overseas case, but a dude's mum passed away, but
- 4:12Speaker 4: instead of letting the IID know, he started dressing up like.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Her and going in. And you wrap her up in
- 4:19Speaker 1: tinfoil and you put her under the house, you know?
- 4:22Speaker 1: Because as soon as you bury it, you're cooked. Yeah, right.
- 4:24Speaker 1: You have to keep the body. Is that what you do?
- 4:26Speaker 1: That's just how it goes. Yeah.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:29Speaker 2: But, I mean, what a ruse, eh?
- 4:31Speaker 3: He sounds really familiar with it.
- 4:32Speaker 2: What a ruse. And in the documentary, he talked about
- 4:35Speaker 2: getting tired from going from ATM to ATM, just getting
- 4:38Speaker 2: all the money out.
- 4:39Speaker 1: In the different accounts. Oh, the poor bastards.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Yeah. It was like, for fuck's sake.
- 4:42Speaker 4: I would hate to be running some sort of situation
- 4:44Speaker 4: where there's a chance of getting caught at any moment.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Well, there's no end game.
- 4:48Speaker 2: No.
- 4:49Speaker 1: You need an end game. I was watching a bloody
- 4:51Speaker 1: good documentary there. What was it called? Avengers Endgame. Avengers,
- 4:56Speaker 1: that was it. And Robert Downey Jr. No, it's a
- 5:00Speaker 1: guy who was a doco, and he was a fraudster
- 5:06Speaker 1: sort of a fella, you know?
- 5:07Speaker 2: Yes.
- 5:07Speaker 1: And he was in London or somewhere around there, and
- 5:12Speaker 1: he was at a university bar, and there was like a,
- 5:16Speaker 1: A guy at the university who got done for smuggling
- 5:18Speaker 1: guns for the IRA, he was a student. So all
- 5:21Speaker 1: the students were a bit unsettled. And one student went
- 5:23Speaker 1: in and was talking to the barman there. And the
- 5:27Speaker 1: barman said, well, actually, you know, there's a lot going
- 5:29Speaker 1: on at the school. And I can tell you that
- 5:30Speaker 1: because I'm actually an MI5 operative.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:34Speaker 1: And I'm here undercover. And so then he went off
- 5:36Speaker 1: with this guy. He said, look, I'll be honest with you.
- 5:39Speaker 1: The reason that I'm here talking to you is because
- 5:41Speaker 1: the IRA have targeted you. They think you know something.
- 5:43Speaker 1: So you're going to have to come into protective custody.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Then he took this guy and his missus all over
- 5:47Speaker 1: the country and would get them to get money off
- 5:50Speaker 1: their parents to pay for his protection of them. And
- 5:53Speaker 1: he would put them in safe houses and different places
- 5:55Speaker 1: and then get them jobs. He goes, you're going to
- 5:56Speaker 1: have to go undercover now. You're going to have to
- 5:58Speaker 1: work in this bar. Get them jobs and bars and
- 6:00Speaker 1: then they'd work and all that money would go to him.
- 6:03Speaker 1: And they finally get to the bottom of it. He
- 6:04Speaker 1: had about eight of those people all over the country
- 6:07Speaker 1: and he made millions of pounds off it.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Wow.
- 6:09Speaker 1: A complete fucking... And this one woman... She was doing this,
- 6:13Speaker 1: being taken around, like completely brainwashed. Yes. Being taken around
- 6:18Speaker 1: doing the safe house shit and, you know, here, there
- 6:20Speaker 1: and everywhere, 10 years of her life. Oh, my God. Unbelievable.
- 6:25Speaker 3: How do you think of that shit?
- 6:26Speaker 1: Unbelievable.
- 6:28Speaker 2: The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from 4 on Radio Hauraki.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Now that's good listening. And it's live.
- 6:37Speaker 1: What are you listening to there?
- 6:40Speaker 2: Oh, me? Oh, sorry. I was listening to the Radio
- 6:44Speaker 2: Hauraki Big Show. Right. Four to seven weekdays.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Yeah, that's quite specific.
- 6:51Speaker 3: And iHeartRadio.
- 6:53Speaker 1: What?
- 6:53Speaker 2: Cheers.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Cheers.
- 6:56Speaker 3: The Hauraki Big Show Podcast.
- 6:58Speaker 2: It's amazing what people will do.
- 6:59Speaker 1: But to be so convincing, how do you even start?
- 7:05Speaker 2: Just the other day, Morgan, and she's a... a very famous,
- 7:09Speaker 2: her case was very famous, I don't know, Peyton or
- 7:11Speaker 2: something like that, and she was convicted of a double murder, right?
- 7:16Speaker 2: And she was quite an intelligent, lovely woman, and they
- 7:20Speaker 2: were interviewing her throughout this documentary. And anyway, and she
- 7:25Speaker 2: was like, I didn't do this. I didn't do this.
- 7:29Speaker 2: But anyway, she was in a maximum security prison, and
- 7:32Speaker 2: she got out, and she was on the run for about-
- 7:37Speaker 2: I think about 140 days. And that would be a nightmare, Keezy.
- 7:41Speaker 2: You're always looking over your back going, fucking hell. So
- 7:44Speaker 2: she got out of this. And anyway, long story short,
- 7:48Speaker 2: they caught her. And then she was in solitary confinement,
- 7:55Speaker 2: which was literally a concrete cell. With nothing in it
- 8:00Speaker 2: apart from a bunk bed for five years. Five fucking years.
- 8:04Speaker 3: But hang on, was it a con or something, the
- 8:06Speaker 3: whole thing?
- 8:07Speaker 2: No, but then the lawyer that was a prosecutor against
- 8:11Speaker 2: her in the double murder case came across this information
- 8:15Speaker 2: and was like, This is bullshit.
- 8:18Speaker 1: She didn't do it.
- 8:18Speaker 2: She didn't actually fucking do this. This is a disgrace.
- 8:23Speaker 2: It was fabricated evidence.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Yeah, okay.
- 8:25Speaker 2: And so they took the case back and they said,
- 8:29Speaker 2: this woman shouldn't be in prison. She's been already in
- 8:32Speaker 2: there for 14 years, escaped for 120 days. solitary confinement
- 8:36Speaker 2: for five years, which just fucked her up completely, as
- 8:39Speaker 2: you can imagine. So they go, this is just, this
- 8:42Speaker 2: is ridiculous. So they go back to court. The judge
- 8:46Speaker 2: hears the new case, all the new evidence, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 8:50Speaker 2: And then they go, oh, nah, denied.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Oh, wow.
- 8:54Speaker 2: They didn't even look at the case again.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Oh, really?
- 8:56Speaker 3: She was like, Far out.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Oh, that's what she gets.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Well, you know, fucking.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I was waiting for you.
- 9:01Speaker 4: To tell me that it turns out the prison cell
- 9:03Speaker 4: she was in was actually just in someone's backyard.
- 9:05Speaker 1: And it was a ruse.
- 9:07Speaker 3: It was a ruse.
- 9:08Speaker 2: And she stored gold bullion in her ruse.
- 9:11Speaker 1: What?
- 9:11Speaker 3: Because the original, you know, the guy, you know, Ponzi schemes.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I know Ponzi.
- 9:15Speaker 3: The guy, Ponzi, that started them.
- 9:18Speaker 1: That's Ponzi.
- 9:19Speaker 3: That's a Ponzi scheme is what you're thinking of.
- 9:22Speaker 4: But that's where you have a whole lot of counterfeit
- 9:25Speaker 4: jukeboxes and people put money in but nothing plays and
- 9:27Speaker 4: then you just take all the money.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Correctamundo. That's what old mate who rang in yesterday,
- 9:32Speaker 1: he said correctamundo to you and that's a Fonzie saying.
- 9:34Speaker 4: Is it?
- 9:35Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:35Speaker 3: That's a deep cut.
- 9:36Speaker 1: I like it.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Yeah, man. But that Fonzie dude, isn't he the guy
- 9:39Speaker 4: that sold the Eiffel Tower? Like back in the day,
- 9:42Speaker 4: he convinced someone or like some big international that he
- 9:45Speaker 4: owned the rights to the Eiffel Tower and sold it
- 9:47Speaker 4: and then did it again like 10 years later.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Backbone.
- 9:50Speaker 3: And then created ponds. I'm pretty sure it was the
- 9:52Speaker 3: same guy.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Yeah, right. Yeah. Absolutely.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Well, this is, you know, the nice thing to sort of,
- 9:56Speaker 2: you know, finish this off, this chitter chat we're having.
- 10:00Speaker 2: The podcast. The social security, the guy that was defrauding
- 10:04Speaker 2: social welfare of all that money went to prison. and
- 10:07Speaker 2: then spent all of his time in prison helping inmates
- 10:12Speaker 2: learn all about tax and accounts and all that sort
- 10:15Speaker 2: of stuff. Well, like the Shawshank Redemption. Yeah, and he
- 10:18Speaker 2: literally got them accounting qualifications, all sorts of stuff.
- 10:21Speaker 3: But then it turned out it was a ruse.
- 10:23Speaker 2: But it was a ruse.
- 10:25Speaker 3: And he was hiding gold bullion in his roof.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, fucking hell. But I don't know, to your question, Casey,
- 10:32Speaker 2: I don't know how people do it. I don't know
- 10:35Speaker 2: how in your mind. It's like people that commit murder
- 10:38Speaker 2: and then don't get caught for 20 years. And, you know,
- 10:43Speaker 2: they must just go, how do you live?
- 10:46Speaker 1: We should do that on the show. How would you
- 10:47Speaker 1: do it?
- 10:48Speaker 3: How'd you get away with murder?
- 10:49Speaker 1: Yeah, the perfect murder.
- 10:50Speaker 3: I'd have the body wrapped in tinfoil under the house.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the first step. Everyone just thinks it's a
- 10:55Speaker 1: roll of tinfoil.
- 10:56Speaker 3: And then I'd dress up as my mum.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Or a heating pipe or something.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Yes. A heating pipe.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Oh, that's just a heating pipe. That's for the heating.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Hey, listen to the big show, 407 Weekdays, Hodaki.
