- 0:00Whatever problem we're facing, it can be big thing, it can be a
- 0:03small thing, but if it matters to you, it matters to God.
- 0:07No problem is too big or too small for the Lord.
- 0:11We come with what we have, and whatever you can offer, God can
- 0:15multiply it so that there will be more than enough.
- 0:18There will be leftovers. No matter who you are, no matter
- 0:22what you've done, Jesus Christ is in relentless pursuit of you.
- 0:32In our last class, we saw Elijah call Elijah, and then shortly
- 0:36after that, Elijah was taken up into heaven.
- 0:39But just before that happened, Elijah said to Elijah, I pray
- 0:42thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
- 0:46This phrase has always stood out to me since my mission because
- 0:49my mission president would often pray for a double portion of the
- 0:52Lord's Spirit to be with us and whatever we were doing.
- 0:55And it's interesting because in Elijah's case, it seems like, at
- 0:58least from a narrative perspective, this literally what
- 1:01happened. Elijah performed 14 miracles
- 1:05that are recorded. Any guesses as to how many
- 1:07miracles Elijah is recorded as performing?
- 1:1028, a double portion. And today we'll explore six of
- 1:14these miracles. And these miracles will show us
- 1:16that whatever problem we're facing, no problem is too big or
- 1:21too small for the Lord Jesus Christ really is enough.
- 1:25So let's start with the miracle of digging ditches.
- 1:28Here's the context. The country Moab used to pay a
- 1:32tribute to Israel. But when Ahab, who was the king
- 1:34of Israel, died, Moab stopped paying the tribute.
- 1:38So Israel, of course, didn't like this.
- 1:39And they got two other countries, Judah and Edom, to
- 1:43join them in the fight against Moab.
- 1:45And their plan was to go South below the Dead Sea and attack
- 1:48Moab from Edom. It seems like it's going to be
- 1:50an easy battle, right? Three countries against one, no
- 1:52problem. But instead we read the king of
- 1:55Israel, the king of Judah and the king of Edom set out.
- 1:57And when they had made a round about March of seven days, there
- 2:01was no water for the army or for the animals that were with them.
- 2:06So you're in the middle of the desert with no water.
- 2:08This is obviously not good. The king of Israel said, alas,
- 2:12the Lord has summoned these 3 kings to hand them over to Moab.
- 2:17Notice his reaction when he's faced with a problem.
- 2:19It's alas, we're doomed. Contrast his reaction with the
- 2:22reaction of Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah.
- 2:25He said, is there no prophet of the Lord here through whom we
- 2:28may the choir of the Lord? This juxtaposition really
- 2:31touched my heart. When I'm faced with the crisis,
- 2:34is my attitude more like, Oh no, I'm doomed.
- 2:37Or is it, how can I turn to the prophets so happily?
- 2:40In this case, there was a prophet there with them, the
- 2:43prophet Elisha. Now, if you remember, the king
- 2:45of Israel worshipped idols and his dad had tried to kill
- 2:48Elijah. So the king of Israel and Elisha
- 2:51don't have the greatest relationship.
- 2:54In fact, when they come to Elisha for help, Elisha says to
- 2:56the king of Israel, what do I have to do with you?
- 2:59Go to your father's prophets or to your mother's.
- 3:02Ask Paul for help. For the king of Israel replied,
- 3:04no, it was the Lord who summoned these 3 kings to hand them over
- 3:09to Moab. I love Elisha, he's pretty
- 3:10sassy. He says back to the king of
- 3:12Israel as the Lord of hosts lives whom I serve.
- 3:15If it were not that I have regard for King Jehoshaphat of
- 3:18Judah, I would give you neither a look nor a glance.
- 3:22But Josephat is there, and so Elijah says he will help.
- 3:26Elijah makes a prophecy. Thus saith the Lord, Make this
- 3:29valley full of ditches. For thus saith the Lord.
- 3:33Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain, yet that
- 3:37valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink both ye
- 3:41and your cattle and your beasts. Now think about that command.
- 3:45You're out in the desert, and God tells you to dig ditches.
- 3:50Doesn't make any sense, but he's telling you this because the
- 3:53valley is going to fill up with water and you're going to need
- 3:56to have ditches ready to store all the water that's coming.
- 3:59And then Elisha says a phrase. I hope we get deep into our
- 4:01hearts. This is an easy thing in the
- 4:05eyes of the Lord. Looks impossible to humans, but
- 4:07it is easy for God. I love this insight from Pastor
- 4:10Craig Greschel. Elisha didn't focus on what he
- 4:13saw. He focused on what God said.
- 4:16Elisha didn't say the ground is dry and I don't see the rain.
- 4:20He didn't focus on what he saw. He focused on what God said.
- 4:24And God said you won't see it, but I'll still do it.
- 4:27This is an easy thing. Can you feel that deep inside?
- 4:32Maybe there's something on your heart that's keeping you up late
- 4:34at night? Can you hear God saying I am
- 4:37alpha and Omega? The 1st and the last, the
- 4:39beginning and the end? This is an easy thing for me.
- 4:43Now take a moment and ponder. How might a person's life change
- 4:47if she or he truly believed deep down that whatever could feel
- 4:52overwhelming really was an easy thing for the Lord?
- 4:57I think back to my own experiences that have been hard
- 5:02and sometimes they're full of anxiety, and my husband always
- 5:06says I wrap myself around my own axle.
- 5:09I get so worried about it that it just churns and cycles and I
- 5:12can't break free of that. And until I can really turn it
- 5:15over to the Lord and feel some peace about it, I'm not able to
- 5:19break that cycle. So I just think that if we could
- 5:22truly trust that it was easy for the Lord and He had it handled,
- 5:26we could let go of some of that anxiety and just feel more
- 5:29peace. It's taken a lot of prayer and
- 5:31probably a lot of scripture reading and just learning how to
- 5:35let go. I can't think of anything
- 5:38necessarily specific, but just praying for the ability for the
- 5:42Spirit to give me that ability to let go and let it be and know
- 5:48that it will be OK. Thank you.
- 5:51I think the time that I have felt at the most is when my
- 5:55adult children started making decisions.
- 5:58Some to leave the covenant path, some to just make decisions that
- 6:03were worrisome to me and I couldn't figure out how to fix
- 6:06it until I realized that I didn't need to do that.
- 6:10God created the world. He had everything done before I
- 6:16even showed up. So knowing that made me sit back
- 6:21and say I will allow him to be in charge, as if I needed to
- 6:25allow that. But doing that made me rejoice
- 6:30in being a part of it and knowing that someday things
- 6:34would be all right, he would take care of it, and I would
- 6:37just assist if he needed me. Thank you.
- 6:40Yeah. When we really feel like it's a
- 6:42light thing for the Lord, it can bring at peace.
- 6:45So what happens to the three kings?
- 6:47Well, they start digging ditches, and we're going to come
- 6:50back to those ditches in just a moment.
- 6:52But if we continue with the storyline we read the next day
- 6:55about the time of the morning offering, suddenly water began
- 6:59to flow from the direction of Eden until the country was
- 7:02filled with water. So now with water in the
- 7:04ditches, Israelites could drink. And the water had another huge
- 7:08benefit. The Moabites were off in the
- 7:10distance watching the Israelites.
- 7:12And from their vantage point as the sun shone upon the water in
- 7:15the ditches, the water looked like blood.
- 7:18So the Moabites said, this is blood.
- 7:20The kings have fought together and killed one another.
- 7:22Now then, Moab to the spoil. But when they came to the camp
- 7:26of Israel, the Israelites rose up and attacked the Moabites who
- 7:29fled before them. Now I want to come back to those
- 7:31ditches. But first, if it's OK, just a
- 7:33little quick side quest. If you keep reading the story,
- 7:36Israelite conquers many Moabite towns.
- 7:39But then there's a strange conclusion to the battle.
- 7:42At the height of the battle, the king of Moab sacrificed his son,
- 7:47we read. Great wrath came upon Israel, so
- 7:50they withdrew from him and returned to their own land.
- 7:54It's not exactly clear what happened, but Israel winds up
- 7:57withdrawing from the battle. Now, interestingly, Misha, the
- 8:01king of Moab, also left a record of this battle, writing at about
- 8:068:40 BC. Misha says that he battled with
- 8:09the House of Omri, and the current king is the grandson of
- 8:13Omri. So I wouldn't base my testimony
- 8:16of the Old Testament on this little bit of archaeology, but
- 8:18it's cool. It's the earliest recorded
- 8:20account outside of the Bible that specifically mentions
- 8:24Jehovah as the God of Israel and the details in the Misha stone.
- 8:29And 2nd Kings, about the battle, the specific details, there's
- 8:31some differences there, but what I think is is interesting to see
- 8:35this correspondence between archaeology and the Bible.
- 8:39Now let's come back to those ditches.
- 8:41Do you remember Elisha's words? Make the valley full of ditches.
- 8:46Now think about the faith it would take to dig a ditch when
- 8:49you're in the middle of the desert.
- 8:51What's the point? How's the water going to come?
- 8:53This is actually a pattern that we see throughout Scripture.
- 8:56God can do anything, He can do everything, but he still wants
- 9:00us to do our part. God could have transported
- 9:03Nephi's family across the ocean through lots of different means,
- 9:06but instead he told Nephi to build a boat.
- 9:08God could have just handed the brother of Jared glowing stones,
- 9:12but he wanted the brother of Jared to come up with a plan.
- 9:15God could have parted the Jordan River, but instead he wanted the
- 9:18feet of the priests to get wet. So digging the ditches reminds
- 9:22us of the importance of doing our part.
- 9:25Think about your life. Is there a ditch God wants you
- 9:30to build so that he can perform a miracle again from Pastor
- 9:35Craig Greschel, he said, what ditch do you need to dig to
- 9:38prepare you for what God wants to do in you?
- 9:41If you're a parent and you want godly kids, what are you going
- 9:44to do? Have faith to dig some ditches?
- 9:46Pray daily over your children. Declare God's word daily over
- 9:50your children in your marriage. Dig a ditch.
- 9:53You apologize first, you forgive first, you serve one another,
- 9:57you get counseling. You see God, you dig a ditch.
- 10:00You're anxious, you're overwhelmed.
- 10:02What do you do? You dig a ditch now.
- 10:05Some of us right now might be in a really dry valley.
- 10:09Maybe we've been digging ditches for a long time.
- 10:12Don't lose hope. Trust in God for what you cannot
- 10:15see yet. God is on the move and you are
- 10:18His child. All things will work together
- 10:21for those who trust in God. Jesus Christ really is enough.
- 10:26We can see that Christ is enough in the twin miracles of
- 10:29multiplying food. In Second Kings chapter 4, we
- 10:32read Now the wife of a member of the company of prophets cried to
- 10:35Elisha, Your servant, my husband is dead and you know that your
- 10:39servant feared the Lord. But a creditor has come to take
- 10:43my two children as slaves. So there's a woman, her husband
- 10:46has been a part of Elisha's team.
- 10:48Now he's died and to pay back her creditor, some of the
- 10:51children will be sold as slaves. She needs help.
- 10:54Elisha said to her, what shall I do for you?
- 10:57Tell me, what do you have in the house?
- 11:01Notice that Elisha doesn't focus on her problems.
- 11:04He doesn't say what don't you have.
- 11:06He says what do you have? God takes whatever we have and
- 11:10he can magnify it. The woman says your servant has
- 11:13nothing in the house except a jar of oil and Alicia's like
- 11:17great, we can work with that. He said.
- 11:19Go outside, borrow vessels from all your neighbors, empty
- 11:22vessels and not just a few. Then go in, shut the door behind
- 11:25you and your children and start pouring into all these vessels.
- 11:29When each is full, set it aside. The woman did exactly what
- 11:33Elisha said to do. Her sons kept bringing her empty
- 11:35vessels. She kept pouring oil into them
- 11:38until they ran out of jars to fill them with.
- 11:40If the woman told Elijah what had happened and he said go sell
- 11:44the oil and pay your debts and you and your children can live
- 11:48on the rest. There's a powerful lesson for us
- 11:51here. We come to God with what we have
- 11:55and it will be enough. We see an echo of this principle
- 11:59in a later miracle in the same chapter.
- 12:01Some time passes and there's a famine in the land.
- 12:03Elisha is with 100 men and someone comes and brings them
- 12:07food. We read he brought 20 loaves of
- 12:10barley and fresh years of grain in a sack.
- 12:13Elisha said give it to the people and let them meet.
- 12:16His servant responded How can I set this before 100 people?
- 12:20There's not enough food for so many.
- 12:22You're already seeing parallels between this and another miracle
- 12:25you're familiar with, but you can understand where the
- 12:27servant's coming from, right? 20 loaves isn't enough to feed
- 12:30100, but Elisha says give it to the people and let them eat.
- 12:34For thus says the Lord, they shall eat and have some left.
- 12:39So the servant gave the people food.
- 12:41They all ate and there were leftovers.
- 12:44You remember the details of Jesus feeding the 5000 plus the
- 12:49same parallels we're seeing. We see several parallels.
- 12:52The people are hungry. A man brought barley loaves.
- 12:56Jesus and Elijah both said give the people something to eat.
- 12:59Both times there was an objection, it's not going to be
- 13:02enough. But both times there was enough
- 13:04for all the people, and there were leftovers.
- 13:08This is one of many miracles where there's correspondences
- 13:10between a miracle that Elisha performed and a miracle that
- 13:13Jesus Christ performed. In fact, in Scripture, nobody
- 13:17besides Jesus Christ performs more miracles than Elisha.
- 13:21He's clearly a forerunner of Jesus Christ, but Jesus Christ
- 13:25is the greater Elisha. Elisha fed 100 with 20 loaves.
- 13:30Jesus fed 5000 with five loaves. In other words, Jesus was able
- 13:35to do more with less, and whatever you can offer, God can
- 13:40multiply it so that there will be more than enough, There will
- 13:43be leftovers. Now I know that we all know this
- 13:46story, but I wonder if sometimes we still feel a little bit like
- 13:49Andrew when he came to Christ. Andrew said there is a boy here
- 13:53who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they
- 13:56among so many people? We might feel inadequate because
- 14:00we look at others, we see how much they have to offer.
- 14:02We see my little humble offering of a couple loaves and fishes.
- 14:05It's not going to be enough. I love the perspective that
- 14:08Dallas Jenkins, the director of The Chosen, gave at a BYU forum.
- 14:12He said Jesus could have just waved his hand and the loaves
- 14:16and fishes could have appeared out of nothing.
- 14:18But he asks us to participate. Kind of like digging ditches.
- 14:23You bring what you have, you give it to God and let it go.
- 14:27It is not your job to feed the 5000.
- 14:31It is only to provide the loaves and the fish.
- 14:35So think about that phrase. It's not your job to feed the
- 14:385000. It's only to provide the loaves
- 14:42and the fish. What does that mean for you in
- 14:44your life right now? One morning I got up early to go
- 14:49to the temple, having some heavy things on my mind, and as I
- 14:52walked into the endowment room there is a picture and it is of
- 14:56the scene of the 5000 and that came into my mind as clear as
- 15:02can be. It is not your job to provide.
- 15:05I will take care of the miracle. You just need to show up and be
- 15:10there. Thank you.
- 15:12So in between these miracles of multiplying food, there's
- 15:15another powerful miracle. It's the raising of the
- 15:18Shunamite woman's son. Unfortunately, we don't know her
- 15:21name. We just call her the Shunamite
- 15:22woman because that's the town that she's from.
- 15:24But she's one of the most powerful women in Scripture.
- 15:27She went out of her way to feed Elijah's meals when he was
- 15:30traveling through town. And they even levelled up she
- 15:32and her husband, and they built a little guest room so we had a
- 15:35place to stay as he was traveling.
- 15:37Elijah was touched by the woman's kindness, and he wanted
- 15:39to give her a blessing. She knew that she didn't have
- 15:41any children, so Elisha told her about this time next year you
- 15:46will hold a son in your arms. And sure enough, a year later,
- 15:49the woman gave birth. But then tragedy struck, we
- 15:51read. When the child was older, he
- 15:53went out one day to his father among the reapers.
- 15:56He complained to his father. Oh, my head, my head, the father
- 15:59said to his servant, Carry him to his mother.
- 16:02He carried him and brought him to his mother.
- 16:04The child sat on her lap until noon, and then he died.
- 16:08She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, closed
- 16:12the door on him and left. So note the time it's about
- 16:15noon. The woman saddles up a donkey
- 16:17and she gets ready to go see Elisha.
- 16:19And her husband's like, wait, why are you going to go see
- 16:21Elisha? She doesn't explain anything.
- 16:23She doesn't tell her husband all the plans.
- 16:25She just says to him, it shall be well.
- 16:28Now Elisha lives in Mount Carmel.
- 16:30It's probably about 25 miles from Shunam, where the woman's
- 16:33living. And donkeys are not the fastest
- 16:34animals. So she's probably going 4 or 5
- 16:36miles an hour. She arrives at Mount Carmel
- 16:38around 6:00 PM. Elisha sees her in the distance.
- 16:41And he sends his servant Ghazi to run to her.
- 16:44And he says, Run now, I pray thee to meet her and say unto
- 16:47her, Is it well with thee? Is it well with the husband?
- 16:50Is it well with the child? Notice the woman's response.
- 16:54She says it is well. Now, why does she say it is well
- 16:58when things are obviously not well?
- 17:00I have a couple of theories, maybe one, She just doesn't want
- 17:02to mess with the Ghazi. She's a woman on a mission.
- 17:04She's trying to get to Elisha, and she doesn't want to be
- 17:06slowed down. But I wonder if there's maybe
- 17:08something more in the phrase It is well.
- 17:10I wonder if she's saying something like, in effect, you
- 17:13know, actually right now I'm not doing that great.
- 17:15I'm dying inside, but my hope is in Jesus Christ.
- 17:19I believe in God and I have confidence in His power, so I
- 17:22can say it as well. This Shunamite woman reminds me
- 17:26of Horatio Spafford. Maybe some of you have heard his
- 17:29story. He was a successful lawyer with
- 17:31a beautiful family, but then their possessions were destroyed
- 17:34in a great fire and shortly after his young son died from
- 17:37illness. So hoping that his family could
- 17:39find some healing, he arranged for his wife and four daughters
- 17:43to travel to England, and he was going to catch up with them as
- 17:45soon as he wrapped up some work. But then and then there was a
- 17:48collision at sea, and his wife survived, but his four daughters
- 17:52were lost. As soon as Horatio learned what
- 17:55happened, he got on a boat to find his wife in England.
- 17:58And as the ship was crossing the ocean, the captain informed him
- 18:01at the time when they were passing over the place where his
- 18:04daughters had died. And that's when Horatio wrote
- 18:07down the words of a hymn that you probably know.
- 18:10Though Satan should buff it, though trial should come, Let
- 18:14this blessed assurance control that Christ hath regarded my
- 18:19helpless estate, and hath shed his own blood for my soul.
- 18:24It is well, it is well with my soul.
- 18:28What gives you the strength and power to say it is well with my
- 18:32soul? It's when you have the peace of
- 18:35Christ just controlling your life so much that you know what
- 18:38Jesus Christ has done for you. Horatio's children weren't
- 18:41brought back to life, but he still had the courage to be able
- 18:44to say it is well just like the Shunammite woman, so she writes
- 18:50straight to Elisha. She falls down at his feet and
- 18:53explains the situation. Elisha says to Gehazi, gird up
- 18:57your loins and take my staff in your hand and go.
- 18:59If you meet anyone, give no greeting.
- 19:01If anyone greets you, do not answer and lay my staff on the
- 19:05face of the child. Now do you think this is going
- 19:07to satisfy the Shunammite woman? No, she says, as the Lord lives,
- 19:11Elisha, I will not leave without you.
- 19:15Sure, your servant's great, he can run ahead, but my trust
- 19:18Elisha is in you. So Gehazi runs ahead.
- 19:21He's pretty fast, Elisha, the woman there a little bit slower.
- 19:24When Gehazi arrives, he lays Elisha's staff on the boy.
- 19:28But the boy doesn't revive when Elisha arrives, he does
- 19:33something unusual. We read.
- 19:34When Elisha came into the house, he saw the child lying dead on
- 19:38his bed. So he went in and closed the
- 19:40door and the two of them, and prayed to the Lord.
- 19:44He went up and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon
- 19:47the child's mouth, and his eyes upon the child's eyes, and his
- 19:51hands upon the child's hands, and stretched himself upon the
- 19:55child, And the flesh of the child waxed warm.
- 19:58So the boy comes back to life. Now think about it.
- 20:02The Shunamite woman's son was raised.
- 20:04Horatio Spafford's daughters were not raised.
- 20:07Yet both of them could honestly say it is well.
- 20:13Even in tragedy we can say it is well because of Jesus Christ.
- 20:17This is not an empty phrase, it's a declaration of faith.
- 20:21Now I want us to consider what gives a person the power to
- 20:25truly be able to say it is well, regardless of external
- 20:30circumstances. How do I get to that place in my
- 20:33life? When I joined the church, this
- 20:37is 3 months into my conversion and I was left with four
- 20:41children and a lot of debt and our house was about to be
- 20:45repossessed and I wondered how I would pay tithing.
- 20:49I had three months worth of tithing I'd set aside, but I
- 20:54also had the opportunity to hold on to the house if I paid what
- 20:59the judge had ordered. And it so happened it was more
- 21:03or less the same amount to pay the tithing.
- 21:06And I went to my Bishop. And my Bishop said to me, I
- 21:10can't give you permission not to pay your tithing.
- 21:13That is between you and the Lord.
- 21:15Go away and think about it. And I walked away.
- 21:18But as I walked away, in my heart I promised I would do
- 21:22everything I can in being obedient to to my covenants, if
- 21:28God would just take care of my children because having
- 21:32converted from Islam, we were just totally cut off and my
- 21:36children is all that I have. So providing it took care of my
- 21:40children, I would be faithful. And so I paid my tithing and two
- 21:45days later was the court hearing and I told the judge I didn't
- 21:49have the money. And my solicitor was absolutely
- 21:51aghast. But we left that courthouse with
- 21:55the judge saying not only telling them the house was not
- 21:59to be repossessed, but also that I did not need to pay any
- 22:04mortgage until after six months when I returned back to work.
- 22:08And so to me, I didn't realize it at the time, but I think me
- 22:15choosing to pay tithing was me putting my trust in the Lord,
- 22:19knowing all would be well. I knew He would keep His
- 22:22promise. And that is perhaps, in a way,
- 22:26knowing that all will be well, rather than all is well.
- 22:31Thank you. So sometimes it's just the
- 22:34courage to act. We move forward with faith.
- 22:36Yeah, I had to do my part, and I think my part in that instance
- 22:41was to exercise my faith and obedience and in doing that was
- 22:48to actually pay the tithing. Yeah, thank you.
- 22:51You were digging A ditch. Oh.
- 22:53Big one. Any other thoughts people want
- 22:56to share? This is going to be hard for me
- 22:59to say that we lost a granddaughter a couple years ago
- 23:02and when my daughter called and said she was having problems, I
- 23:06said, look, the Lord hasn't let us down yet.
- 23:08Let's pray and hope that things work out and our granddaughter
- 23:13wasn't able to be on this earth with us.
- 23:17However, as we look at that experience and go back through
- 23:20the times, miracle after miracle after miracle occurred during
- 23:25that time when we were all struggling and we were able to
- 23:28draw together as a family and turn to the Lord.
- 23:31And one of the miracles, I think, is that they as a family
- 23:34and a couple did not turn away from the Lord, but that their
- 23:38faith was strengthened, that they'll be able to be with her
- 23:41again. So sometimes it doesn't look the
- 23:43way we want it to look, but the Lord was still with us.
- 23:47And so in a time like that, what do you think prepared you and
- 23:51your family to be able to to say it as well?
- 23:55I think our prior experiences with the Lord, we had had
- 23:57experiences where He had blessed us.
- 24:01My husband was in a terrible accident and should have died,
- 24:04but he didn't and wasn't even really that injured.
- 24:07And just little things along the way where the Lord had blessed
- 24:10us and we could rely on those experiences to strengthen our
- 24:15testimony that He will still be with us.
- 24:17Thank you. So you can just feel the faith
- 24:19of everyone in this room. Now, this next story that we're
- 24:22going to focus on is probably the best known miracle of
- 24:26Elisha. It's the one that involves
- 24:28Naman. If you remember, Naman is the
- 24:30commander of the army of the king of Aram, or what we might
- 24:34consider today to be Syria. Naman was a great man and in
- 24:38high favor with his master. Naman, though a mighty warrior,
- 24:42suffered from a skin disease. Now the Arimans or Syrians, on
- 24:47one of their raids had taken a young girl captive from the land
- 24:50of Israel, and she served Naaman's wife.
- 24:54She said to her mistress, if only my Lord were with the
- 24:57prophet who is in Samaria, he would cure him of a skin
- 25:01disease. So she's referring here to the
- 25:03prophet Elisha. And when Naaman hears about the
- 25:07prophet Elisha, he tells the king of Syria what the girl has
- 25:10said. And the Syrian king says, go
- 25:12then and I will send along a letter to the king of Israel.
- 25:16So Naaman gathers an enormous amount of money and he goes to
- 25:19visit the king of Israel. You can see him pulling up with
- 25:21his entourage. He brought the letter to the
- 25:23king of Israel, which read when this letter reaches you know
- 25:27that I have sent to you my servant Naaman, that you may
- 25:30cure him of his skin disease. When the king of Israel read
- 25:34this letter, he tore his clothes and said, am I God to give death
- 25:37or life? That this man sends word to me
- 25:40to cure a man of his skin disease.
- 25:42Just look and see how he is trying to pick a quarrel with
- 25:45me. So the king of Israel thinks
- 25:47this is some kind of scheme to create a feud between him and
- 25:50the king of Syria. But Elisha hears about it and he
- 25:53sends a message to the king of Israel saying, come and see me.
- 25:57So imagine Naman pulls up with his entourage all of his money.
- 26:01He's a big deal, but Elisha doesn't even come out to see
- 26:06him. Instead he sends a servant out
- 26:08who tells Naman, go wash in the Jordan 7 times and your flesh
- 26:12shall be restored and you shall be clean.
- 26:15We read. Naima became angry and went away
- 26:18saying I thought that for me he would surely come out and I've
- 26:22highlighted that phrase. I thought for me it would be
- 26:25different and I wonder if I do the same thing.
- 26:27Maybe you do as well. Cognitively I know that bad
- 26:30things happen to good people, but I thought for me it would be
- 26:35different. Naaman goes on to say, Are not
- 26:37the rivers of Damascus better than all the waters of Israel?
- 26:41Could I not wash in them and be clean?
- 26:44And as you recall, Naaman walks away in a rage.
- 26:47But then one of his servants approaches him and says, If the
- 26:51prophet had bid thee to do some great thing, would thou not have
- 26:54done it? How much rather than when he
- 26:57sayeth to thee, wash and be clean.
- 27:00I wonder if we're ever like naman.
- 27:02We want the prophet to tell us to do some great thing for sure.
- 27:05If he did, we would do it. But then he tells us to do a
- 27:08small thing, read your scriptures, pray a little bit
- 27:10more. Do we do it under Rasband?
- 27:13Reflecting on this account said the account of naman reminds us
- 27:16of the risk of picking and choosing the parts of prophetic
- 27:20counsel that fit our thinking, our expectations, or today's
- 27:23norms. Our prophet continually points
- 27:27us to our own river Jordans to be healed.
- 27:31So the advice from the servant touches Naaman's heart.
- 27:34We read. Naaman went down and immersed
- 27:36himself seven times in the Jordan.
- 27:38According to the word of the man of God.
- 27:40His flesh was restored like the flesh of a young boy, and he was
- 27:44clean. So one lesson from the story is
- 27:46do the simple things that the prophet is saying and you'll be
- 27:49blessed. Now there's another lesson.
- 27:52Did you know that in his first recorded sermon, Jesus Christ
- 27:55points to the story of Naman? Picture the scene.
- 27:58He's in his hometown of Nazareth.
- 28:01He's just spoken at the synagogue.
- 28:03Everyone is amazed at his gracious words.
- 28:06But then Jesus said there were many widows in Israel in the
- 28:10time of Elijah when there was a severe famine over all the land.
- 28:13Remember we talked about this in our last class.
- 28:17Yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to that widow at
- 28:21Zarephath, inside an area outside the borders of the land
- 28:25of Israel. Jesus continued.
- 28:27There were also many with a skin disease in Israel at the time of
- 28:30the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman
- 28:35the Syrian. Well, the people did not like
- 28:38the Savior's sermon. They wanted deliverance for
- 28:40Israel, but Jesus was reminding them that God's grace extends to
- 28:44all, even maybe especially the outsiders and the foreigners.
- 28:49That's another lesson from Neiman story.
- 28:52But I wonder if we sometimes miss 1/3 lesson.
- 28:55It's easy to miss because the main heroine in the story, we
- 28:59just glide past her in a sentence.
- 29:01But I love how Timothy Keller highlights her.
- 29:04Do you remember what we read? The Syrians on one of their
- 29:06raids had taken a young girl captive from the land of Israel.
- 29:11We just read it and go on. But already you know some
- 29:13details about her life. Think of how horrific it's been.
- 29:17Imagine a young girl, maybe 6 or seven years old, ripped away
- 29:21from her family. Maybe she even saw her parents
- 29:24killed. Now she's serving as a slave in
- 29:27Naaman's household. I don't know about you, but if I
- 29:30were this young girl and I heard that Naaman had leprosy, I'd say
- 29:33good. I hope to flesh rots.
- 29:35But she doesn't. She's what we might call a
- 29:38suffering servant. She intercedes to heal those who
- 29:43have hurt her. The young girl forgives those
- 29:47who wronged. She reminds US of Christ who
- 29:50said Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.
- 29:54Jesus Christ, love and forgiveness are extended to all.
- 29:58No matter who you are, no matter what you've done, Jesus Christ
- 30:02is in relentless pursuit of you. Now, the next miracle we're just
- 30:07going to talk about briefly, because in a way, it's kind of a
- 30:10small miracle. Nobody's died.
- 30:12There's no food to multiply, no serious diseases, no opposing
- 30:15army. We read as one was felling a
- 30:18log. His axe head fell into the
- 30:20water. He cried out.
- 30:21A last master. It was borrowed.
- 30:23My guess is we've all been there.
- 30:24We've lost something. You've lost your wallet, you've
- 30:26lost your keys. You lost your phone.
- 30:27You pray, but you might also wonder, I shouldn't even pray
- 30:30about this. Like this is such a small thing.
- 30:32Will God even care? Now?
- 30:34Maybe in this case it wasn't a small thing.
- 30:37A borrowed act said could have been very valuable.
- 30:40But I love that it doesn't matter whether it's a small
- 30:42thing or a big thing we read. Where did it fall?
- 30:45Elisha asked. When the man showed Elisha the
- 30:47place, Elisha cut off a stick and threw it in there and made
- 30:52the iron float. Elisha said pick it up.
- 30:55So the man reached out his hand and took it.
- 30:58You've had what we might call a small prayer answered.
- 31:02To me, this reminds me, especially seeing it juxtaposed
- 31:05with a miracle like raising the dead.
- 31:06It can be big thing, it can be a small thing, but if it matters
- 31:10to you, it matters to God. Whatever you've lost, there's
- 31:13nothing too big, nothing too small for the Savior.
- 31:17Let's turn to one final miracle in army of angels.
- 31:21At this part in the story, the king of Syria keeps trying to
- 31:24attack the king of Israel. But every time he makes a plan
- 31:27to attack, Elisha gets a revelation about it and he warns
- 31:31the king of Israel. But the king of Syria doesn't
- 31:33know that. He thinks that maybe one of his
- 31:35men is a spy who's warning the king of Israel.
- 31:38But then one of his officers says, no one is betraying you,
- 31:41my Lord king. It's Elisha, the prophet in
- 31:43Israel who tells the king of Israel the words that you speak
- 31:47in bedchamber. So the king sends his army to go
- 31:50and capture Elisha. At the time, Elisha was in a
- 31:53village called Dothan. So the army surrounds Dothan and
- 31:57when Elisha's servant wakes up and sees the surrounding army,
- 32:00he's terrified. He says to Elisha, alas, master,
- 32:04what shall we do? Elisha replied, Fear not, for
- 32:07they that be with us are more than they that be with them.
- 32:11Just let the power of those words rest in your heart for a
- 32:15moment. These two individuals surrounded
- 32:18by an army, and yet they have the advantage.
- 32:22Elisha prayed. O Lord, please open his eyes
- 32:25that he may see. So the Lord opened the eyes of
- 32:28the servant, and he saw the mountain was full of horses and
- 32:31Chariots of fire all around. Elisha, I hope that the next
- 32:35time you or I feel alone that we'll remember this story.
- 32:39They that be with us are more than they that be with them.
- 32:45These words are true for you and me.
- 32:47Now, this is normally where we end the story.
- 32:50In fact, I'm curious how many of you right now know how the story
- 32:52ends? We usually just hear this and we
- 32:54think that was a great story. Awesome.
- 32:56There's actually a surprised twist to this story at the end.
- 33:00We'll finish the story in just a moment.
- 33:02But first, let's just step back and see a bigger picture.
- 33:06Consider how in each of these miracles that Elisha has
- 33:09performed, we've seen a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ.
- 33:13Is there a lack of water? Jesus quenches thirst.
- 33:16He feeds multitudes. He raises the dead, He heals the
- 33:19unclean, He recovers what is lost.
- 33:23Now how about this final story? How do we see Christ in it?
- 33:26We read when the Syrians came down against him, Elisha prayed
- 33:30to the Lord and said, Strike this people, please with
- 33:33blindness. So he struck them with
- 33:35blindness, as Elisha had asked. Elisha said to the Syrian Army,
- 33:40This is not the way. This is not the city.
- 33:43Follow me and I will bring you to the man whom you seek.
- 33:46And he led them to Samaria. Samaria is the capital of
- 33:50Israel. So Elisha has led the opposing
- 33:52army right into the heart of Israelite territory.
- 33:56Now the Syrians are surrounded. Now consider it.
- 33:59The Syrians have been attacking the Israelites numerous times.
- 34:03Now they are helpless before the Israelites.
- 34:06When the king of Israel saw the Syrian Army, he said to Elisha,
- 34:09Father, shall I strike them? What do you think?
- 34:12Elisha will say? We're tempted to think, of
- 34:14course, yes, get the revenge. But no, Elisha answered, Set
- 34:18food and water before them, so they may eat and drink and let
- 34:22them go to their master. So they feed the opposing army.
- 34:28And what's the result? The Syrians no longer came
- 34:32raiding into the land of Israel. Think about that.
- 34:35A radical act of grace and mercy transformed the Syrian Army.
- 34:42It accomplished what war had never done.
- 34:46Elisha foreshadows Christ. He gives grace to those who
- 34:50don't deserve it. Remember what the apostle Paul
- 34:53taught. God proves his love for us in
- 34:56that while we still were sinners, Christ died for us.
- 35:01When we see this, when we see Christ's incredible act of mercy
- 35:04in coming to atone for our sins, it changes us.
- 35:07That's what gives us the strength to dig a ditch.
- 35:10That's what gives us the strength to bring our loaves and
- 35:13when we truly can feel Jesus Christ atonement deep in our
- 35:18hearts, that's what gives us the ability to say honestly it is
- 35:24well.
