- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Italian with Fexingo. Episode 128 already. Luna: I know, I can't believe it. And I've been practicing my family words from last time. Madre, padre, fratello, sorella. Lucas: Nice, those are solid. Today let's go a bit further — extended family. Grandparents, grandchildren, uncles, aunts, cousins. Luna: Oh perfect. I've been meaning to talk about my grandma in Italian. Lucas: If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with your Italian, we're glad. And we deliberately keep these shows ad-free. If you want to support that choice, the link is buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it's a nice way to keep things simple. Okay, so let's learn 'nonno' and 'nonna'? Lucas: Exactly. Nonno is grandfather. Nonna is grandmother. Listen: nonno.... nonno. Luna: Nonno. Lucas: Good. And nonna.... nonna. Luna: Nonna. Lucas: Grandparents together is nonni. For example: I miei nonni sono simpatici — my grandparents are nice. Nonni. Luna: Nonni. I miei nonni. That's easy. Lucas: Now, the word for grandchild is nipote. But careful — nipote can also mean nephew or niece. It's the same word. Nipote. Luna: Nipote. So I could say 'mio nipote' for my grandson or my nephew? Lucas: Right. Context tells you which. Now, uncle is zio. Aunt is zia. Zio.... zia. Luna: Zio. Zia. That sounds like 'zia' is the feminine. Lucas: Exactly. And cousins: cugino for male cousin, cugina for female. Cugino.... cugina. Luna: Cugino. Cugina. So if I say 'la mia cugina', that's my female cousin. Lucas: Perfect. Let's do a quick scene. Imagine you're showing me a family photo. You point and say: Questo è mio nonno. Luna: Questo è mio nonno. And then I'd say: Questa è mia nonna. Lucas: Yes. And then: Lui è mio zio, lei è mia zia. Luna: Lui è mio zio, lei è mia zia. Lucas: And: Loro sono i miei cugini. Luna: Loro sono i miei cugini. That covers a lot. Lucas: Let's review all eight today: nonno, nonna, nonni, nipote, zio, zia, cugino, cugina. Luna: Okay: nonno, nonna, nonni, nipote, zio, zia, cugino, cugina. Lucas: Beautiful. Now try this: I miei nonni hanno un nipote. My grandparents have a grandson. Luna: I miei nonni hanno un nipote. Lucas: And: Mio zio e mia zia hanno due cugini. Luna: Mio zio e mia zia hanno due cugini. That makes sense — my uncle and aunt have two cousins. Lucas: Actually careful — 'cugini' here means the children of the uncle and aunt, so cousins. So it's 'my uncle and aunt have two cousins' — meaning their children are cousins to you. Luna: Oh right, because 'cugini' is plural. So they are my cugini. Lucas: Yes. You could say: I miei cugini sono simpatici. My cousins are nice. Luna: I miei cugini sono simpatici. Lucas: Try to make a sentence about your own family, Luna. Luna: Umm... La mia nonna è molto gentile. My grandma is very kind. Lucas: That's lovely. Nonna is feminine, so 'la mia nonna' — perfect. Luna: And I have a cugina named Sofia. La mia cugina Sofia. Lucas: Exactly. And if Sofia is your cousin, you could say: Sofia è mia cugina. Luna: Sofia è mia cugina. Lucas: Great job today. We learned eight new family words. Practice them, and next time we'll keep building. Luna: Thanks Lucas. And listeners, practice these and we'll see you next time on Learn Italian with Fexingo.
