Latest / Halo Territory: A Los Angeles Angels Podcast / DIALED IN: Reid Detmers retires 21 of 22 batters in Angels' win over Astros
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Helay Angel fans, and welcome back to Halo Territory on
- 0:10Speaker 1: Mike D. Giovanna, former La Times baseball rider and host
- 0:13Speaker 1: of the show, joined by Mark Trumbo, the former Angel
- 0:17Speaker 1: slugger and my regular co host. Well, the Angels won
- 0:20Speaker 1: two out of three from Houston this week, and they
- 0:23Speaker 1: couldn't have swept that series had Kirby Yates been able
- 0:26Speaker 1: to convert a save Monday Night. Walbert Urana navigated heavy
- 0:31Speaker 1: traffic through five shutout innings in Tuesdays ten to one
- 0:34Speaker 1: win and reed Debtmers was dominant again in Monday Nights
- 0:40Speaker 1: three to two ten inning win. Debtmers retired twenty one
- 0:44Speaker 1: of twenty two batters, his only blemish a solo homer
- 0:48Speaker 1: to Shay Whitcomb to lead off the six. He now
- 0:51Speaker 1: has a one point seven to three ERA in his
- 0:55Speaker 1: last four starts. He struck out thirty six and walked
- 0:59Speaker 1: five in that span. And here's a couple more good
- 1:02Speaker 1: stats courtesy of Jeff Fletcher with the Rowards County Register. Wednesday,
- 1:05Speaker 1: ninety threw seventy of his pitches for strikes, including first
- 1:09Speaker 1: piss pitch strikes to sixteen to twenty two hitters went
- 1:13Speaker 1: to zero to two counts on eight guys, and his
- 1:17Speaker 1: slider was especially effective. He got ten call strikes and
- 1:20Speaker 1: six whiffs, accounting for nearly half of the thirty three
- 1:22Speaker 1: sliders he threw. And here's what Reid said after the
- 1:26Speaker 1: game quote, just kind of trusting my stuff, attacking, staying
- 1:30Speaker 1: on the attack is the main thing. Just trusting everything
- 1:33Speaker 1: and not trying to pinpoint everything, which is kind of
- 1:37Speaker 1: like the pattern I've fallen into in the past, trusting
- 1:41Speaker 1: the stuff and going at them. Usually when you go
- 1:44Speaker 1: right at them, good things happen. Now, Mark, you've talked
- 1:48Speaker 1: about Detmers a lot in the show. He was your
- 1:50Speaker 1: most underrated player in the game or on the team,
- 1:53Speaker 1: and our last show, is this exactly the kind of approach,
- 1:57Speaker 1: approach you've been stressing with Reid? And what's it like
- 2:01Speaker 1: to sort of see it happen right before your eyes
- 2:03Speaker 1: last night?
- 2:05Speaker 2: It's a lot of fun to watch.
- 2:06Speaker 3: I think his comments are reflective of what I have
- 2:10Speaker 3: thought and would be best for him going right at guys,
- 2:13Speaker 3: and his words were in the past, trying to be
- 2:17Speaker 3: a little bit too perfect, trying to pinpoint, trying to
- 2:20Speaker 3: be an accuracy guy. And I think a lot of
- 2:24Speaker 3: guys can fall into that trap where everything suffers because
- 2:28Speaker 3: you have a focus that may be a little misplaced.
- 2:32Speaker 3: It's good to have command, it's a great thing to
- 2:34Speaker 3: have command, but sometimes trying to put command at the
- 2:38Speaker 3: forefront doesn't work for some guys. I think for Reid,
- 2:42Speaker 3: his command gets better when he is more aggressive and
- 2:46Speaker 3: more focused on attacking, and the command kind of takes
- 2:49Speaker 3: care of itself.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Why.
- 2:51Speaker 3: It's one of those things in sports. But last night
- 2:54Speaker 3: was incredible performance. Forty five percent fastball, thirty seven slider,
- 3:01Speaker 3: ten percent curve ball, and he mixed in some change up,
- 3:03Speaker 3: So seventy one percent strikes is incredible. Sixteen of twenty
- 3:08Speaker 3: two hitters were first pitch strikes as well, so the
- 3:11Speaker 3: Astros were on the defensive the entire night. With the
- 3:14Speaker 3: Bats as a club overall, I was not impressed with them.
- 3:18Speaker 3: They appear to be, you know, a team that's probably
- 3:22Speaker 3: going to be fighting for fourth place or so. They
- 3:24Speaker 3: have better relief pitching than the Angels, but they played
- 3:28Speaker 3: sloppy defense, and it seems like a team that's don't
- 3:32Speaker 3: I don't quite know what's going to happen. They're beating
- 3:34Speaker 3: up other clubs. But the two times I've seen him
- 3:38Speaker 3: so far, they haven't left much of an impression.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Yeah, Reid was pulled after seven things. I'm sorry, and
- 3:45Speaker 1: only eighty nine pitches. Were a little surprised at that
- 3:48Speaker 1: move at that point, were you?
- 3:51Speaker 2: Yes?
- 3:51Speaker 4: I was.
- 3:52Speaker 1: He seemed to be in command, and it seemed to
- 3:55Speaker 1: be a really quick conversation in the dugout. I mean,
- 3:58Speaker 1: by the time the cameras panned in there, Reid was
- 4:01Speaker 1: smiling and talking to the guys, and it's like that
- 4:04Speaker 1: was like the decision was made as he was coming
- 4:07Speaker 1: off the mound after the seventh I mean, yeah, I
- 4:11Speaker 1: personally would have left him in. I think it's good
- 4:13Speaker 1: to sort of stretch some of these pictures when they
- 4:16Speaker 1: when the situation is right, the situation seem right Wednesday night,
- 4:22Speaker 1: You agree, you disagree.
- 4:26Speaker 3: I think what Kurt said was he wanted to give
- 4:29Speaker 3: soul Seth and I'm assuming Bachmann clean innings for both
- 4:34Speaker 3: the eighth and the ninth, representing possibly a definitive answer
- 4:39Speaker 3: to the late bullpen question, who is going to pitch
- 4:43Speaker 3: the eighth, Who's going to pitch the ninth? I think
- 4:45Speaker 3: this was going to be the answer, and it unfortunately, uh,
- 4:50Speaker 3: you know, one pitch and a home run entire game
- 4:53Speaker 3: leading to that blowing up and looking not so good.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Had had a clean in Bachman came in and done
- 5:01Speaker 3: his thing, it would have been a very nice, complete
- 5:04Speaker 3: win and a clear indication that he trusts those two
- 5:09Speaker 3: guys to get those final six outs, because I think
- 5:12Speaker 3: the Angels are three outs light in the bullpen most
- 5:16Speaker 3: every game. And how many of the pitchers are able
- 5:19Speaker 3: to go seven innings not too many of them that
- 5:22Speaker 3: they haven't done. The starting pitching has been very good,
- 5:24Speaker 3: but being able to go seven innings and eighty nine
- 5:27Speaker 3: pitches for a guy that's in shape like Read, that's
- 5:30Speaker 3: not many worrying about him getting through the next inning.
- 5:35Speaker 3: To me, I'm not sure that I would have also
- 5:38Speaker 3: shared those thoughts, but I think Kurt had had a plan.
- 5:42Speaker 3: It didn't work. That's kind of the unfortunate part of it.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Tough night for Ron Kulpa as well. Eighty nine percent
- 5:48Speaker 3: overall accuracy behind the plate, many many challenges, including a
- 5:53Speaker 3: play at the plate, so it wasn't just on balls
- 5:57Speaker 3: of strikes.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Yeah, let's talk about that play. Seth of course, gave
- 6:01Speaker 1: up the game tying Homer the cam Smith in the eighth,
- 6:04Speaker 1: and the Angels nearly lost this game in the ninth
- 6:06Speaker 1: when Jordan Alvarez singled Christian Walker doubled into the corner
- 6:11Speaker 1: and left, and as Alvarez had stopped at third and
- 6:15Speaker 1: was actually going back to the bag, zach Netto just
- 6:19Speaker 1: fires this wild throw that got past catcher Logan o'hoppy.
- 6:24Speaker 1: It got past Sam Bachman, who was backing up the play.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Bachman did a hell of a job just getting to
- 6:29Speaker 1: that ball and firing a really accurate throw to o'happy,
- 6:33Speaker 1: who puts the tag on Alvarez. Initially ruled safe, replay
- 6:38Speaker 1: rules him out and the Angels get a nice bunt
- 6:43Speaker 1: down by Donovan in the bottom of the tenth and
- 6:49Speaker 1: win it on a series hit. What was zach Netto
- 6:52Speaker 1: thinking there? I know it's kind of a reaction play,
- 6:55Speaker 1: but I mean the runner is in his clear line
- 6:58Speaker 1: of vision and he's still on corks that crazy throw.
- 7:01Speaker 1: That one really stunned me. What's happening with a guy
- 7:04Speaker 1: on a play like that. Is it just a lack
- 7:06Speaker 1: of awareness or what's going on there?
- 7:09Speaker 3: I think it was a great play by Bachmann getting
- 7:11Speaker 3: out of that ball and firing a dart to home
- 7:14Speaker 3: plate right on the money, and that's what it took.
- 7:17Speaker 3: I think that the call being overturned was interesting. Some
- 7:22Speaker 3: of these replays on very obvious calls can take two minutes,
- 7:26Speaker 3: and this one took twenty seconds. And really I saw
- 7:32Speaker 3: an angle that it wasn't totally clear. It looked like
- 7:36Speaker 3: he could have been out. It looked like he could
- 7:38Speaker 3: have been safe. Now, I think the Angels were very
- 7:41Speaker 3: fortunate that Alvarez was the one running. I'm not sure
- 7:44Speaker 3: if they had emptied their bench. I don't think they had,
- 7:48Speaker 3: but he is not their fastest base runner, so maybe
- 7:51Speaker 3: it was because there was a two out rally or whatnot.
- 7:54Speaker 3: Why don't you answer your original question, I didn't, you know,
- 7:57Speaker 3: dodge it. But what do you think happened on that
- 8:00Speaker 3: through Well?
- 8:03Speaker 1: I think his I think he was just so focused
- 8:06Speaker 1: on making a play at the plate that his mind
- 8:08Speaker 1: was It's almost like you know a guy who's just
- 8:11Speaker 1: determined to swing at a three to one pitch, no
- 8:13Speaker 1: matter where it is. He was thinking he had to three, well,
- 8:16Speaker 1: three and oh, three and one whatever. I just think
- 8:20Speaker 1: he didn't pick up the runner. I don't know if
- 8:22Speaker 1: his fielders are yelling hold, hold, hold, I know, I'm
- 8:26Speaker 1: not gonna compare it to my playing shortstop when I
- 8:29Speaker 1: was a kid. But he took the he took yeah,
- 8:34Speaker 1: he took the relay and he's turning, you know, right
- 8:37Speaker 1: to left. Alvarez is right in his line of vision,
- 8:41Speaker 1: he's coming back to the bag. At that point, you
- 8:44Speaker 1: just got to eat that ball instead he fires it
- 8:47Speaker 1: to the backstop.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 8:50Speaker 1: It just seemed like maybe he's a little overamped or
- 8:53Speaker 1: just so keyed up to make to get an out
- 8:55Speaker 1: of the plate. He made a poor decision on my
- 8:58Speaker 1: in my a.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Young queige out in right field.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, good good comp right there, Mark, But once
- 9:09Speaker 1: again good fortune for a chain smiling on the Halos
- 9:12Speaker 1: and they were able to get that winning ten in.
- 9:14Speaker 1: And say, let's take a quick break for a word
- 9:16Speaker 1: from our sponsors and we come back. We'll talk about
- 9:19Speaker 1: two pretty good stories going on with angels, Wilbert Urana
- 9:23Speaker 1: and Trey Mancini will be right back after this message.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Crouch.
- 9:29Speaker 5: You know, I travel all the time and I'm always
- 9:31Speaker 5: looking for possible tickets to go see Evans concerts MLB games.
- 9:35Speaker 6: When I do, I always find seakeek. Yeah, I'm not
- 9:38Speaker 6: traveling so pretty much. I'm looking for the games all
- 9:41Speaker 6: in my area. I'm gonna look for an Orioles game.
- 9:44Speaker 6: I'm gonna look for the Phillies game, the Mets game,
- 9:47Speaker 6: the Yankees game. But you know what else is coming up?
- 9:49Speaker 6: The All Star Game. Seakeek's got me.

- 10:29Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo Territory with Mark Trumbo and
- 10:32Speaker 1: Mike D. G Givanna, Will Robert Urania Walk, five guys
- 10:36Speaker 1: and needed one hundred and seven pitches to get through
- 10:39Speaker 1: five innings. Tuesday night, the Astros put two runners on
- 10:42Speaker 1: on the first, second, and fifth innings. They loaded the
- 10:45Speaker 1: bases in the third, but Urania escaped each gym. Let's
- 10:49Speaker 1: hear what manager Kurt Suzuki had to say after that performance.
- 10:58Speaker 7: Urania was grinding out there, but still gets through five.
- 11:01Speaker 2: To get the win. And what did you see from
- 11:03Speaker 2: him as he was battling?
- 11:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I mean he was competing out there tonight,
- 11:07Speaker 4: and obviously he didn't have his best command, but.
- 11:11Speaker 5: His just desire to get through that game is what
- 11:14Speaker 5: pulled him through.
- 11:15Speaker 2: And that's you can't teach that, you know.
- 11:18Speaker 8: So it was really nice to see him have that competitive.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Nature to pull him through when he didn't have his
- 11:23Speaker 1: best command.
- 11:24Speaker 2: And it was fun to watch.
- 11:26Speaker 4: A lot of pitches, one hundred and seven pitches. How
- 11:27Speaker 4: much were you hoping you can get that last better? Gosh,
- 11:29Speaker 4: it was fun to watch, but it was stressful to
- 11:31Speaker 4: watch too, you know.
- 11:32Speaker 2: I wanted him to be able to get through five.
- 11:35Speaker 4: Guys strong as you know anybody I've ever been around.
- 11:39Speaker 2: So it was those fighter he was still throwing ninety eight,
- 11:41Speaker 2: you know, last hit or so it was nice for me.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Well, I personally love the fact that Kurt let him
- 11:49Speaker 1: stay in and get that last better. I thought he
- 11:50Speaker 1: was overthrown his fastball a little bit to get to that.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Point, but he did make it.
- 11:54Speaker 1: He got the win, and Mark we talked a little
- 11:57Speaker 1: bit about this and on a few previous shows. But
- 12:00Speaker 1: this kid's ability to escape these kind of jams and
- 12:03Speaker 1: to pitch through that kind of traffic. Does he look
- 12:05Speaker 1: like a twenty two year old to you?
- 12:09Speaker 3: Not in the least. He's It's hard to explain how
- 12:13Speaker 3: a guy acquires this kind of calm and cool under pressure.
- 12:20Speaker 3: It probably has. It could be a trade he's had
- 12:23Speaker 3: his whole life. He could I don't know what his
- 12:26Speaker 3: hobbies are off the field or his formative years, But seriously,
- 12:31Speaker 3: how do you teach someone this. It's very difficult seeing
- 12:34Speaker 3: a lot of examples of it not on display. But
- 12:38Speaker 3: he seems to have immediately come into major leagues and
- 12:43Speaker 3: you know, not only is he holding his own, he's dominating.
- 12:46Speaker 3: And this one game where he brought I think he
- 12:49Speaker 3: said it, actually, I don't know. He might have said
- 12:52Speaker 3: his warm ups were quite good. It's either one or
- 12:54Speaker 3: the other. Is that what he said?
- 12:56Speaker 1: Yeah, well, let's we'll take a listen to the postgame
- 12:58Speaker 1: interview with Urania and we do ask him about you know,
- 13:02Speaker 1: that ability to stay composed under pressure.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Let's hear from Warburt. That's how happy were you to
- 13:10Speaker 2: get that last day? Get the five minutes?
- 13:12Speaker 9: I mean grat I was trying to find my command
- 13:16Speaker 9: heavy all game, so I was great to get out
- 13:19Speaker 9: of the audien in and got the wins.
- 13:22Speaker 2: That's good.
- 13:23Speaker 6: A lot of pitches.
- 13:24Speaker 2: You know, what were you fighting with you mean tonight?
- 13:26Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 13:27Speaker 9: I wake up today and I feel like I was
- 13:29Speaker 9: ready to throw a ninety innings, So I don't know.
- 13:32Speaker 2: I wanted out good. I feel really good. Uh, I
- 13:37Speaker 2: don't know what changed in the game.
- 13:39Speaker 9: I may look it up and uh yeah outen that
- 13:43Speaker 9: was love pitches, Uh, Dutch plum.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Was what's up for me? Very frustrating, sorry, honest and
- 13:51Speaker 2: totally be happy for the five zero.
- 13:54Speaker 9: Yeah he's like, give me that five zeros and you
- 13:57Speaker 9: know he's in bad moment right now, but yeah, he's
- 14:00Speaker 9: trying to be happy with me.
- 14:01Speaker 3: What did you have to do to still be able
- 14:03Speaker 3: to get the ounce even though you wanted football in
- 14:05Speaker 3: want of it.
- 14:07Speaker 9: I mean mentally, I think, just trying to be calm.
- 14:11Speaker 9: I know it isaly frustrated, trying many bitches, but at
- 14:15Speaker 9: the moment I'm just trying to get out I and
- 14:18Speaker 9: that's the way they walk or everything, and just trying
- 14:21Speaker 9: to find it.
- 14:22Speaker 1: How do you change mentally when there's two on, bases loaded,
- 14:25Speaker 1: all all these.
- 14:26Speaker 9: Things like tonight, what I say is trying to be calm,
- 14:30Speaker 9: trying to make in bitches. I know, so they wasn't
- 14:33Speaker 9: the best kamamba. Yeah, what I say again, just trying
- 14:36Speaker 9: to be calm, trusting and making bitches.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Yet Yeah, I don't know, twenty two year old kid here.
- 14:48Speaker 1: It seems like human nature, especially for a rookie guy's
- 14:52Speaker 1: first year in the big leagues, is when you get
- 14:54Speaker 1: in these situations with the bases loaded two on, none
- 14:58Speaker 1: out whatever, human nature dictates that you'd be a little
- 15:01Speaker 1: more amped up, you know, maybe try to throw more
- 15:03Speaker 1: pitches by guys. Maybe it's because this kid has just
- 15:07Speaker 1: a lethal change up as one of his best weapons.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Maybe that helps him slow the game down. But what
- 15:12Speaker 1: does it say Mark about his long term future that
- 15:16Speaker 1: he's able to stay so common these situations.
- 15:21Speaker 3: Firstly, I'd like to say huge credit for giving the
- 15:24Speaker 3: interview in English and not leaning on a translator. Some
- 15:27Speaker 3: guys need it and they use it, but I think
- 15:31Speaker 3: that that impressed the heck out of me.
- 15:34Speaker 2: It's not easy.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Yes, the English is not perfect for anyone who might
- 15:39Speaker 3: want to comment or something, but do you know how
- 15:42Speaker 3: tough it is and how rare it is for guys
- 15:44Speaker 3: to be willing to give an English interview, So huge
- 15:48Speaker 3: kudos on that. Very impressive and I think guys that
- 15:53Speaker 3: have done that in the past have really gone. I
- 15:56Speaker 3: don't It's not a predictive thing for success, but it
- 15:59Speaker 3: does a dedication to trying to, you know, be a
- 16:02Speaker 3: complete player and integrate. So the guy has impressed that.
- 16:06Speaker 3: You know, there's nothing not to like. His pitching on
- 16:09Speaker 3: the field is tremendous. His comments off There's a good
- 16:12Speaker 3: chance maybe the Angels minor league coaches helped him in
- 16:15Speaker 3: this regard too. I think it'd be remiss not to
- 16:18Speaker 3: say that that could That could have been a part
- 16:20Speaker 3: of it as well. It just seems like his overall
- 16:24Speaker 3: demeanor is pretty laid back and easy going, but when
- 16:26Speaker 3: he gets on the mound, he's able to you know,
- 16:29Speaker 3: rock and fire, and he's got a lethal two pitch mix.
- 16:33Speaker 3: Hitters do not seem to be able to make any
- 16:35Speaker 3: kind of adjustment. The Astros flail in and I don't
- 16:39Speaker 3: know as a hitter myself what approach I would take
- 16:42Speaker 3: because he has so much movement. Initially I'd probably think
- 16:46Speaker 3: right center, but he throws so hard that he has
- 16:49Speaker 3: you know, that's hard to kind of do with a
- 16:51Speaker 3: guy throwing ninety eight ninety nine or more. So hitters
- 16:54Speaker 3: are going to have to adjust. I will try and
- 16:56Speaker 3: look and see who's actually had a little bit of success,
- 16:59Speaker 3: but to no one so far. Yeah, I will say.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Jose Soriano has also been.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Doing his interviews in English, another Dominican right hander, and
- 17:08Speaker 1: I asked the Angels PR staff about that, because there
- 17:11Speaker 1: aren't many guys in past and certainly past Angels history
- 17:14Speaker 1: who've been able to do that, and he said, you know,
- 17:17Speaker 1: once Soriano did it, it sort of encouraged some of the
- 17:20Speaker 1: other guys to do it. So kudos to kudos to
- 17:23Speaker 1: sori especially and the Angels for encouraging that. All right, now,
- 17:27Speaker 1: let's turn our attention to Baseball's feel good story of
- 17:31Speaker 1: the week, maybe of the season. Trey Mancini, who was
- 17:34Speaker 1: diagnosed with stage three colon cancer in twenty twenty, who
- 17:38Speaker 1: hadn't played a big league game since twenty twenty three,
- 17:41Speaker 1: who nearly retired before twenty twenty five, was called up
- 17:45Speaker 1: on Monday from Triple A Salt Lake and had three
- 17:48Speaker 1: hits in an RBI in his first big league game
- 17:51Speaker 1: in one thousand and.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Forty three days well.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Trey caught up with the guys at the Foul Territory
- 17:57Speaker 1: Network this week, and he he talked about what that
- 18:01Speaker 1: moment was like for him.
- 18:03Speaker 8: Like you said, it's like debuting all over again. It
- 18:05Speaker 8: was the same emotions all day that I felt ten
- 18:08Speaker 8: years ago when I debuted. The you know, not really
- 18:11Speaker 8: sleep in the night before, not eating much during the day,
- 18:16Speaker 8: you know, a little nervousness, but also excitement, adrenaline, and
- 18:19Speaker 8: then when the game started, you know, the whole world
- 18:22Speaker 8: just kind of slowed down. And I hadn't felt that
- 18:26Speaker 8: since September twenty sixteen when I debuted, so I didn't
- 18:30Speaker 8: expect to ever feel that on a baseball field again,
- 18:33Speaker 8: and it was. It was pretty incredible.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Now, Mark, you were a teammate a Trey man scenes
- 18:38Speaker 1: in Baltimore from twenty sixteen to twenty nineteen. You've maintained
- 18:42Speaker 1: your friendship with him over the years. What was that
- 18:45Speaker 1: like for you to see him back in the big
- 18:48Speaker 1: leagues and doing what he did Monday night?
- 18:51Speaker 3: Incredible that amount of time off, that kind of dedication.
- 18:55Speaker 3: I've talked to him routinely. Some of this stuff. Obviously
- 18:59Speaker 3: it's private, so I'm not going to laugh about it
- 19:02Speaker 3: on here, but I know that there have been times
- 19:05Speaker 3: and he has said as much that even this year
- 19:07Speaker 3: he was ready to call it. I was very surprised
- 19:10Speaker 3: that he hung in there when Nolan initially hit the
- 19:13Speaker 3: IL and he did not get a promotion, because I
- 19:17Speaker 3: think that was a time where it was quite obvious,
- 19:20Speaker 3: especially because he is a first baseman and they have
- 19:23Speaker 3: a first baseman that's on the IL, and he didn't
- 19:25Speaker 3: get the call it. But credit to him, he hung
- 19:27Speaker 3: on there just a little bit longer and did get
- 19:30Speaker 3: the news he was hoping for.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Coming into spring training.
- 19:34Speaker 3: He really this offseason had not prepared like a normal
- 19:38Speaker 3: offseason to play. I think it was later in the
- 19:41Speaker 3: Winner that Brady got in his ear and said that
- 19:44Speaker 3: I think you have some more left in the tank.
- 19:46Speaker 2: And he was right, and he does. And I think that.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Initial game, I mean he had the bat speed, he
- 19:51Speaker 3: had the rhythm, the timing, everything you'd look for. And
- 19:54Speaker 3: his defense has been very nice as well. So this
- 19:57Speaker 3: is a guy that can come in immediately contribute not
- 20:00Speaker 3: only on the field, but he is a true veteran.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Now he can impart wisdom on these young players. He's
- 20:05Speaker 3: been there, he's done it. He's done literally everything you
- 20:08Speaker 3: could probably do in this game, including overcoming, you know,
- 20:12Speaker 3: one of the greatest adversities you could ever wish. In
- 20:16Speaker 3: the prime of his career, he was a stage four,
- 20:20Speaker 3: Stage three, yeah, stage three, sorry, and battle came back.
- 20:26Speaker 3: He talked about it. I think we have maybe another
- 20:28Speaker 3: clip about some of his thoughts and feelings too, if
- 20:31Speaker 3: we're going to play that.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll get another quick break for another word from
- 20:36Speaker 1: our sponsors and get back. We'll have a little more
- 20:38Speaker 1: from Trey Mancini.

- 21:41Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo Territory with Mark Trumbull and
- 21:44Speaker 1: Mike D.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Givonna.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Well, as we said, Mancini missed the twenty twenty season
- 21:48Speaker 1: while undergoing cancer treatments. Played with Baltimore in twenty one
- 21:52Speaker 1: and parts of twenty two, was traded to Houston in
- 21:56Speaker 1: twenty two. It was actually a remember the Astros World
- 21:59Speaker 1: Series win team in twenty two.
- 22:02Speaker 2: He played for the Cubs.
- 22:03Speaker 1: In twenty twenty three and sat out twenty twenty four.
- 22:07Speaker 1: He was about to retire from baseball, but was talked
- 22:10Speaker 1: out of it by a current Angels hitting coach, Brady Anderson.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Let's hear what Trey had to say about that.
- 22:18Speaker 8: Brady Anderson is like the sole reason I'm still playing.
- 22:22Speaker 8: He reached out to me originally in July of twenty
- 22:26Speaker 8: twenty four and told me that he thinks I should
- 22:28Speaker 8: give it another shot and keep playing, And deep down
- 22:32Speaker 8: I knew that I could, but I had an extended
- 22:36Speaker 8: period of time where I didn't play well and didn't
- 22:39Speaker 8: know if I wanted to get back into the game.
- 22:41Speaker 8: And I was fine being done, but something just kind
- 22:45Speaker 8: of started eating away at me at how my career ended,
- 22:50Speaker 8: and knowing that I still had the ability I think
- 22:55Speaker 8: would eat away at me maybe years later. So I
- 22:58Speaker 8: went and hit with him a few months after he
- 23:00Speaker 8: reached out to me, and it felt great, and the
- 23:04Speaker 8: Diamondbacks gave me the opportunity to get back in the
- 23:07Speaker 8: game that offseason.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Well, Trey.
- 23:10Speaker 1: He did play a triple A reno in Arizona system
- 23:13Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five, but he opted out on June first,
- 23:17Speaker 1: hoping to catch on with another team. No one called,
- 23:21Speaker 1: so then he signs with the Angels a minor league
- 23:23Speaker 1: deal in January. But it's still been, as we say,
- 23:25Speaker 1: over a thousand days now since he played in the
- 23:28Speaker 1: big leagues, and the guys at Fouled Territory asked Trey
- 23:32Speaker 1: if it was tougher to struggle in the big leagues
- 23:36Speaker 1: or to play well and not get the call. And
- 23:39Speaker 1: here's what Trey had to say about that.
- 23:41Speaker 8: Playing poorly is tough. But you know, for a few
- 23:44Speaker 8: years there especially, you know, I was diagnosed with cancer
- 23:48Speaker 8: in twenty twenty, and I think it took a huge
- 23:51Speaker 8: mental tone on me for the years after, which I
- 23:54Speaker 8: didn't expect. You know, I thought it was going to be,
- 23:56Speaker 8: you know, I'd go through chemo and it would be done.
- 24:00Speaker 8: But you're still really concerned about your health after the fact.
- 24:03Speaker 8: And I think my confidence took a huge hit, just
- 24:07Speaker 8: kind of slowly over the next few years, and I
- 24:10Speaker 8: became a bit of a shell of myself on the
- 24:12Speaker 8: baseball field, I think because of that. And you know,
- 24:17Speaker 8: it took being away from the game in twenty twenty
- 24:19Speaker 8: four to I think get over that and admit to
- 24:24Speaker 8: myself that I wish that I could have, you know,
- 24:27Speaker 8: snapped out of it a little bit better. But you know,
- 24:30Speaker 8: hindsight's twenty twenty. So it's incredible to be back and
- 24:34Speaker 8: have the opportunity to play again with that perspective and
- 24:39Speaker 8: thinking that I was done. You know, I felt a
- 24:42Speaker 8: million miles away from from baseball. Like even this past fall,
- 24:46Speaker 8: I was like just playing tennis on my tennis team
- 24:48Speaker 8: at the country club, like I thought I was retired
- 24:52Speaker 8: for good. You know, I was getting ready to announce
- 24:55Speaker 8: it before Brady called.
- 24:58Speaker 2: I love that playing tennis of the club. Bark. You
- 25:01Speaker 2: were a teammate of Treys when.
- 25:02Speaker 1: He hit two ninety one with an eight ninety nine ops,
- 25:06Speaker 1: thirty five homers, thirty eight doubles and ninety seven RBIs
- 25:10Speaker 1: for the Orioles in twenty nineteen.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Now, nobody expects him to repeat those kind of.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Numbers of the Angels. But what do you feel like
- 25:17Speaker 1: he can bring to this team at this point?
- 25:20Speaker 3: He can bring a calm in presence for some of
- 25:25Speaker 3: the young guys that may you know, the game speeds
- 25:27Speaker 3: up on them, if that is a thing that goes on.
- 25:30Speaker 3: But really just his on field play, the way he
- 25:33Speaker 3: goes about his daily work, habits that he's played a
- 25:37Speaker 3: long time, He's absorbed a lot of wisdom. He was
- 25:40Speaker 3: a young kid on an Orioles team that was stacked
- 25:44Speaker 3: with veterans, so kind of like the situation I had
- 25:48Speaker 3: with the Angels coming up, he was. He experienced that dynamic.
- 25:52Speaker 3: And you know, he's just an excellent all around guy
- 25:56Speaker 3: as well. Always friendly, you've probably noticed that, and a
- 26:01Speaker 3: very candid interview too. He gives very thoughtful responses and
- 26:05Speaker 3: the opposite from you know a lot of guys, and
- 26:08Speaker 3: that's fine if they don't want to divulge too much.
- 26:10Speaker 3: But I mean, it's it's been a great story and
- 26:14Speaker 3: I think that, you know, his swing looks very reminiscent
- 26:18Speaker 3: of the swing that I saw produce huge results, you know,
- 26:23Speaker 3: very big seasons. So if he can get some consistent
- 26:26Speaker 3: at bats, I think he can really contribute.
- 26:28Speaker 1: All right, s turn our attention to Mike Trout, who
- 26:31Speaker 1: snapped an oh for twenty two slump with a single
- 26:34Speaker 1: to right field in the second ending Tuesday. Maybe a coincidence,
- 26:38Speaker 1: maybe not. He hit a solo home run on Wednesday
- 26:40Speaker 1: Night's game first let's hear what he had to say
- 26:43Speaker 1: after Tuesday night's game.
- 26:45Speaker 2: He is not the end of the word, but I'm
- 26:47Speaker 2: sure when you was getting pretty long, So yeah, Feld
- 26:50Speaker 2: who was definitely good to squeak one in there. I
- 26:52Speaker 2: felt like you know.
- 26:55Speaker 4: The past, you know, it's uh hit ball is hard
- 27:00Speaker 4: just being caught. But it's about baseball.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Is Did you feel like you were swinging?
- 27:06Speaker 4: I mean no, I mean there was some there were
- 27:08Speaker 4: some times where I felt a little off to play,
- 27:12Speaker 4: but then there was times where I felt good.
- 27:15Speaker 2: So, uh, you know, it's baseball. So are you fighting
- 27:18Speaker 2: something in the box or is it just a field
- 27:20Speaker 2: on me? No, just uh seeing the ball.
- 27:23Speaker 4: You know, I think it always comes down to being
- 27:27Speaker 4: in the guests.
- 27:27Speaker 2: About the hit. And you know, when I'm you know.
- 27:30Speaker 4: Crashing forward, yeah, lose vision of the ball, so it
- 27:35Speaker 4: the ball moves on me and that's why I started
- 27:37Speaker 4: to chase.
- 27:37Speaker 3: So yeah, the lineup in general today, you got a
- 27:40Speaker 3: lot of guys had hits.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Hits the scoring position, didn't strike out that much. I mean,
- 27:44Speaker 2: what are those days like for you guys?
- 27:46Speaker 4: Yeah, No, it's good having great at bats, passing baton,
- 27:51Speaker 4: you know, putting the ball in play. I think that's
- 27:53Speaker 4: been the key and not trying to do too much.
- 27:56Speaker 2: And yeah, you're seeing.
- 27:58Speaker 4: That when you know the guys that are coming up
- 28:00Speaker 4: having great at bats, I mean Mike Greg w three
- 28:02Speaker 4: three walks of night.
- 28:03Speaker 2: So that's a pretty.
- 28:05Speaker 7: Depressive, you feel like just not kind of putting a
- 28:08Speaker 7: little slump to rescue, like like an energy shift at all.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Or do you think you see.
- 28:12Speaker 4: The starting No, I mean it's uh, you know, the
- 28:15Speaker 4: work come in every day, the work's been been good,
- 28:18Speaker 4: good to good in the cage, just not.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Getting a result, but you know, we want to max up.
- 28:24Speaker 2: We're two plus months and you've been playing every day.
- 28:27Speaker 2: How do you feel physically? You know there's some you know,
- 28:34Speaker 2: things come up obviously, but nothing crazy. So I feel good.
- 28:38Speaker 1: So way yeah, well, Mark, take us into the batter's box.
- 28:44Speaker 1: What does Trout mean when he says, using his words,
- 28:47Speaker 1: when he crashes forward, the ball moves on me, and
- 28:50Speaker 1: that's when I start to chase.
- 28:53Speaker 3: What he's saying is his swing probably is the sequence.
- 28:56Speaker 3: It's just a little bit out of sorts. His head
- 29:00Speaker 3: is traveling more and it might not be discernible and
- 29:04Speaker 3: it won't be from the you know, the normal view
- 29:07Speaker 3: watching the television, but if you were to look from
- 29:11Speaker 3: the side, there probably is some forward travel going on.
- 29:14Speaker 3: So it essentially means that his balance and is not
- 29:19Speaker 3: exactly where he wants it to be. His back leg
- 29:21Speaker 3: is probably not as stable as he would like, and
- 29:25Speaker 3: it can happen for any number of reasons. Sometimes it's
- 29:29Speaker 3: especially if your the results aren't happening, You're far more
- 29:32Speaker 3: likely to want to go get the ball. I think
- 29:34Speaker 3: that it's a very tough concept that sounds so simple.
- 29:37Speaker 3: Just let it travel, let it get deep. Good luck
- 29:39Speaker 3: when these guys are thrown almost one hundred most of
- 29:42Speaker 3: the time, so it's a very fine line, and I
- 29:45Speaker 3: think he's really looking to keep his head behind the
- 29:49Speaker 3: ball a little bit more and make contact out in front.
- 29:53Speaker 3: I think that last night was a lot better. I
- 29:57Speaker 3: think it's trended in the right direction. It's no one's
- 30:00Speaker 3: immune from going through those things. But I think hearing
- 30:03Speaker 3: what he had to say there, he could be you know,
- 30:05Speaker 3: the timing could be a little.
- 30:06Speaker 2: Bit late too. I've said it before, but the answer.
- 30:09Speaker 3: Is overall and the health one. I don't think he
- 30:12Speaker 3: was dodging anything. I think he was just acknowledging that
- 30:15Speaker 3: when are you one hundred percent? Maybe never, you know,
- 30:18Speaker 3: first day of spring, post first day of spring.
- 30:21Speaker 2: Yeah. Beyond that, he's, you know, health wise, has been
- 30:24Speaker 2: excellent this year.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Yeah, We're going to close the show with a pop quiz.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Mark Trumbo, who leads the Angels and saves.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Adam Jordan Romano.
- 30:36Speaker 1: Jordan Romano is the saves leader with four. That's the
- 30:39Speaker 1: same Jordan Romano who was released at the end of April.
- 30:43Speaker 1: The Angels have converted six of twenty one save opportunities.
- 30:48Speaker 1: They have two saves since April fourth. Their last save
- 30:52Speaker 1: was the page twenty third mark. How is that even possible?
- 30:57Speaker 3: It's hard to fatho on other the reality is the
- 31:01Speaker 3: bullpen in those situations has let them down repeatedly. It's
- 31:06Speaker 3: been a very sore spot. There's an argument and a
- 31:09Speaker 3: lot of people tend to believe this team could be
- 31:13Speaker 3: significantly better in the standings, and yes, they would be
- 31:17Speaker 3: if those saves were converted. Now, they've had struggles in
- 31:21Speaker 3: other areas as well. It is very tough to win.
- 31:25Speaker 3: Leading the league in strikeouts, there's no way around that.
- 31:28Speaker 3: I highlighted one team that did at the Minnesota twins.
- 31:31Speaker 3: They also struck out the most hitters on the pitching
- 31:34Speaker 3: side and played excellent defense in the Angels defense, unless
- 31:39Speaker 3: I saw incorrectly rates as the worst or one of
- 31:42Speaker 3: the worst, depending on Sometimes it's subjective with the range
- 31:46Speaker 3: and other things. But they're trying to play a different
- 31:50Speaker 3: style of baseball. You saw the sack bunts. You had
- 31:54Speaker 3: a nice one, Walton had one, and that to me
- 31:59Speaker 3: signify a clear shift going towards more manufacturing of runs,
- 32:05Speaker 3: less reliant. The comments continue to kind of trickle in,
- 32:08Speaker 3: not a relyingt on the home run. I think certain
- 32:10Speaker 3: guys are going to not change their approach. It's pretty
- 32:14Speaker 3: obvious who they are. Logan had some nice comments about
- 32:19Speaker 3: his swing too, turned in the right direction. He said,
- 32:21Speaker 3: of you know, feel wise, he feels like he's really headed,
- 32:25Speaker 3: you know where he wants to be. And these are
- 32:27Speaker 3: the types of bats that he's capable of putting up,
- 32:29Speaker 3: so he could go on a tear. Time will tell,
- 32:31Speaker 3: but you know, it's nice to get some results with
- 32:35Speaker 3: all the hard works. So very nice game. Would have
- 32:38Speaker 3: been nice to close it out in regulation nine innings,
- 32:42Speaker 3: but they got the win and Syria with a nice
- 32:45Speaker 3: line drive after the swing before, a little bit interesting,
- 32:48Speaker 3: a little bit adjusted, but he's a guy that I
- 32:52Speaker 3: don't think you know, you can go with him.
- 32:54Speaker 2: It's pitch to pitch, you never know. It makes it interesting.
- 32:58Speaker 1: He went from probably the most defense of swing we've
- 33:00Speaker 1: seen all year to walk off line drive sing on
- 33:03Speaker 1: the left field as I forget who said it, but
- 33:07Speaker 1: that's how baseball go. We'll close the episode with that.
- 33:11Speaker 1: Thanks for tuning in, Thanks for listening. Please like and subscribe.
- 33:16Speaker 1: We will see you next time on Halo Territory
