- 2:16I pray you'll correct us today. God, give us divine counsel
- 2:19today. Lord, I pray against all malice
- 2:23and deceit and division and discord.
- 2:25God, in the name of Jesus, we bind the enemy from off of this
- 2:28time. We bind the enemy from off of
- 2:31our families and our houses. God, we bind the enemy from off
- 2:34of our minds in the name of Jesus Christ.
- 2:37We cast him into the judgment that you have a waiting for him,
- 2:41Father, and we just stand in your presence.
- 2:43We love you. King Jesus, shower us with your
- 2:47presence. Shower us with your goodness and
- 2:49grace and love and mercy. God and I pray that we will be
- 2:53found putting our hand to the plow.
- 2:55I pray that we will not look back.
- 2:57I pray that we will not give up any ground.
- 3:01Father will charge the hill today.
- 3:04And Lord, it's all about you and Jesus Christ, holy and precious
- 3:08name, I pray, Amen. Well, let's start in verse one.
- 3:16Now. A certain man was sick named
- 3:18Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
- 3:24So we know that Bethany was not too far outside of Jerusalem.
- 3:28We know that Jesus loved this family and we know that they
- 3:33were all unique and all different, but Jesus loved them
- 3:37individually and He loves us the same way.
- 3:40It's not a one-size-fits-all when we come to Jesus.
- 3:44He made us all unique. He made us all beautiful in our
- 3:48time, friends, and He sees us. He sees you friend.
- 3:53Verse 2, it was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment
- 3:59and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was
- 4:03sick. So we know that this Mary of
- 4:06Bethany, we know that she was the one who poured out the
- 4:10spikenard. She was the one who busted the
- 4:13alabaster jar. She was the one who anointed our
- 4:17Lord, our Savior, our King, and he went to the cross smelling
- 4:23like this fragrance, friends, and she is remembered here.
- 4:27And Jesus said that she would be remembered three.
- 4:31Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he
- 4:39whom you love is sick. So they knew Jesus could heal
- 4:44from a distance. They did not demand that he
- 4:47would come. They knew that he could do it.
- 4:50Let's see what old Jesus has to say here.
- 4:52For when Jesus heard that, he said, this sickness is not unto
- 4:58death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be
- 5:02glorified thereby. So Jesus here is giving a hint
- 5:07of what he desires to do. The timing that his Father has
- 5:11given him, knowing that his time is short, knowing that he's
- 5:14going to be going to the cross soon, knowing that the Jews are
- 5:18trying to stone him and kill him and that he's in their vicinity
- 5:22and hear Jesus knows everything and he waits at the proper time
- 5:29and it is all the divine appointment.
- 5:31Let's see how it goes. 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her
- 5:36sister and Lazarus, and there's a whole unit study here that can
- 5:41be made on these three and their different personalities and how
- 5:45Jesus loved them. But suffice to say that he was
- 5:49close to them and he slept in their house and he treated them
- 5:56like family. What a blessing it is. 6 When he
- 6:01had heard, therefore, that he was sick, he stayed two days
- 6:07still in the same place where he was.
- 6:11It looked as if he was in no hurry.
- 6:15He would have went about his daily tasks as if everything was
- 6:20business as usual. Seven.
- 6:27Then after that, he said to his disciples, let us go into Judea
- 6:33again. This would have been a massive
- 6:37alarm for the disciples who had seen that he's been almost
- 6:42stoned three times recently and the Jews were hostile towards
- 6:47him. And here he is, he's already
- 6:51left that area and went to the Jordan, got out of their
- 6:55district, and now he's saying, let's go back in it. 8 His
- 7:00disciples said unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone
- 7:07you, and you go there again. 9 Jesus answered, Are there not 12
- 7:13hours in the day? If any man walks in the day, he
- 7:18stumblest not because he sees the light of this world. 10 But
- 7:25if a man walks in the night, he stumbles because there is no
- 7:30light in him. So Jesus is referencing here
- 7:35again that there is only a specific time for the work to be
- 7:42done and that he needed to go and that his time was being cut
- 7:48short. And he's referencing it here.
- 7:51And he has already told them that there's coming persecution.
- 7:58There's coming persecution on the early church.
- 8:01There would be persecution throughout the ages.
- 8:04And then it's going to culminate in the tribulation, the
- 8:09seven-year time of hell on earth, where no man can work. 11
- 8:15These things he said, And after that he said unto them, Our
- 8:20friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up out of
- 8:25sleep. So here it looked as if he was
- 8:29just sleeping. 12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleeps,
- 8:36he will do well. So they're saying let him sleep.
- 8:39Why would you risk your life if he's sleeping, he'll get better.
- 8:4513 Howbeit Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that he
- 8:52had spoken of taking of rest and sleep.
- 8:56So there's some passages as we get on into the New Testament
- 9:02that you're going to see that death is referenced in other
- 9:08places as just sleep. And when you close your eyes at
- 9:12night, friends, you're not aware that you're sleeping.
- 9:16And when we take our last breath, friends, we will be in
- 9:22paradise. To be absent from the body is to
- 9:25be present with the Lord. And it is like sleep.
- 9:30Whenever you go to your deathbed, you will close your
- 9:36eyes and in a moment you will be ushered into his presence in the
- 9:41same way that you close your eyes at night.
- 9:44And in a moment it's already morning time.
- 9:47It will be that fast. It will be that quick.
- 9:50And Jesus is so good at what he does, and he he's referencing
- 9:55Lazarus's death as if it's just a peaceful sleep and the
- 10:01disciples missed it. 14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly,
- 10:13Lazarus is dead. 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was
- 10:23not there to the intent you may believe.
- 10:27Nevertheless, let us go unto Him.
- 10:33So here he is saying, is this is going to work out for the
- 10:38better. I'm glad that I wasn't there to
- 10:40be pulled on and to be caroused and to be corralled into healing
- 10:48and for everyone to beg of me. I'm glad, because you're going
- 10:52to see the full power of God's resurrection on display. 16 Then
- 11:01said Thomas, which is called Didymus.
- 11:04Unto his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with
- 11:09him. This seems like bravado, but it
- 11:12very well could have been that he was sarcastic in this.
- 11:19Let us go and die with him. Perhaps he was disappointed that
- 11:23the ministry of Jesus Christ didn't look like how he hoped it
- 11:27to. It was another wrestling that
- 11:30Judas had to deal with that Jesus.
- 11:33His ministry didn't look like how they thought it would.
- 11:37It's another wrestling of the Jews that they thought how He
- 11:42did not come in the way that they thought that he should.
- 11:45And here you can see that these disciples titles were wrestling
- 11:51with the disappointment that Jesus was going back in to
- 11:59perhaps die and to be stoned one final time.
- 12:03And we know that it was the death on the cross that brought
- 12:07about your salvation and mine and Jesus knew it.
- 12:11And this Didymus, also known as the twin, there's scholars that
- 12:16believed he, perhaps he looked like Jesus and he would have
- 12:23been the 1st at risk to be mistaken for Jesus.
- 12:28And perhaps this was the reason he said this.
- 12:30He was ready to die with him. 17 Then when Jesus came, he found
- 12:37that he had lain in the grave four days already.
- 12:40So the Jews thought that for three days the Spirit would hang
- 12:44around and perhaps by a miracle of God the man would be
- 12:48resuscitated, and that would have not been outside of the
- 12:52wheelhouse of their thought processes and the culture.
- 12:55But four days it was thought that the Spirit was gone and
- 12:59that he was dead. Dead. 18 Now Bethany was near
- 13:05unto Jerusalem about 15 furlongs off. 19 And many of the Jews
- 13:11came to Martha and Mary to comfort them concerning their
- 13:14brother. 20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was
- 13:18coming, she went and met him. But Mary sat still in the house.
- 13:23So we know that Mary was the one who sat at Jesus's feet, and
- 13:28Martha was the doer, and she was the busy body, and she was
- 13:32begging Jesus to say something to Mary for just sitting there.
- 13:37And Jesus told her that Mary had chosen the better.
- 13:41And here we can see the busy body at work.
- 13:44Mary is still in this mournful state as Martha runs out to meet
- 13:50Jesus. 21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if you had been
- 13:57here, my brother had not died. 22 But I know that even now,
- 14:05whatsoever you will ask of God, God will give it to you.
- 14:09So here's the faith. The faith is rising.
- 14:12She knows. She knows who she's talking to.
- 14:16She knows that it's Jesus, and he has all power and all
- 14:19authority. 23 Jesus said unto her, Your brother shall rise
- 14:23again. 24 Martha said unto him, I know that he will rise again
- 14:29in the resurrection at the last day.
- 14:31She had not yet understood that Jesus was going to bring him
- 14:35back from the dead. He was going to resuscitate him
- 14:40and he was going to go on to die another time in his life.
- 14:47This is not the resurrection in the sense that he gained a new
- 14:51body. This is the resuscitation back
- 14:55to his old body. And here we can see it all on
- 14:59display, and she's saying that I know he will rise again in the
- 15:04resurrection. She was not a Sadducee.
- 15:06She actually believed in the resurrection. 25 Jesus said unto
- 15:11her, I am the resurrection and the life, and he that believes
- 15:19in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.
- 15:25You know Jesus is our resurrection, Jesus is our life.
- 15:30Apart from Jesus, there is no life, there is no resurrected
- 15:35body unto eternal bliss and eternal paradise with Him.
- 15:44Friends, you must be connected to Jesus Christ to experience
- 15:50life and to experience the resurrection unto life. 26 And
- 15:58whosoever lives and believes in me shall never die.
- 16:03Do you believe this? That is a promise that you need
- 16:05to underline, highlight, circle, you need to journal about it,
- 16:12you need to write it in the margin of your Bible, you need
- 16:15to memorize it. That if you will believe in
- 16:18Jesus Christ, you will never die.
- 16:23There is the first death and then there is a second death,
- 16:26friends. And for us who know Jesus
- 16:29Christ, we do not have to taste in the second death, friends,
- 16:35the yes, these mortal bodies must go back into dust, but we
- 16:39will be raised to life. And Jesus Christ was the first
- 16:43fruits, friends, of that resurrection power on full
- 16:47display. And it lives inside of you,
- 16:49believer, and you will never die.
- 16:52You will live forever with Jesus Christ. 27 She said unto him,
- 16:59Yeah, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God,
- 17:05which come into the world. 28 And when she had said so, she
- 17:09went her way and called Mary, her sister, secretly saying, The
- 17:14Master has come, and he calls for you.
- 17:16So Jesus says, go and get Mary. We're about to do something that
- 17:20this world has never known, a man that is dead, dead, and he
- 17:26stinketh. So he wants Mary there to
- 17:30witness, and she goes and tells her secretly. 29 As soon as she
- 17:37heard that, she arose quickly and came unto him. 30 Now Jesus
- 17:43was not yet come into the town, but was at that.
- 17:47It was in that place where Martha met him.
- 17:50So he stayed there and waited on Mary. 31 The Jews then, which
- 17:55were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw
- 17:59Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her,
- 18:04saying, She goes into the grave to weep there.
- 18:07So they wanted to follow her. They saw that she was in a
- 18:11hurry. 32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was and saw
- 18:18him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if you
- 18:23had been here, my brother had not died, you can see that,
- 18:27Martha. You can see that Mary had been
- 18:30sitting and conversing, that all it would have taken was for
- 18:34Jesus to get off of his daily grind and to come into their
- 18:42direction, and Lazarus would have not died.
- 18:46And so Jesus has already said that this sickness will not lead
- 18:50to death. He's already said that he's glad
- 18:52that he wasn't there, and he's already said he's going to
- 18:55glorify the Father. 33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping
- 19:04and the Jews also weeping, which came with her, he groaned in the
- 19:09Spirit and was troubled. Jesus Christ groaning in the
- 19:16Spirit over death. He conquered death in the grave,
- 19:25friends, and he can groan with us whenever we're going through
- 19:31hard times. When we're losing the battle for
- 19:35our health, he groans with us. But just know he has conquered
- 19:40it, friends. He can identify with your
- 19:44humanity, friends. You can see it here. 34 And
- 19:52said, Where have you laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come
- 19:58and see. 35 Jesus wept this weeping God that we serve.
- 20:19I pray that God has given you the ministry of tears.
- 20:24Friends, I pray that you are broken hearted over the sin of
- 20:29your neighbor. I pray that you're broken
- 20:31hearted over all of the things that plagued this world, the
- 20:39violence and deceit. I pray that you shed tears for
- 20:46all the unborn. I pray that you shed tears for
- 20:51all the marriages that could not be reconciled.
- 20:55I pray that you shed tears for all the fatherless.
- 20:58I pray that you shed tears for all the blood that has been shed
- 21:03upon the ground in the violence. I pray that you shed tears for
- 21:08all those that are hungering and are experiencing hunger pains
- 21:13and having to ingest filthy water which is not fit for
- 21:19drinking. I pray that you shed tears for
- 21:24all of the people that are being trafficked.
- 21:30I pray that you shed tears for those that are caught up in
- 21:35addiction. I pray that you shed tears for
- 21:39those that have lost loved ones and lost limbs and have lost
- 21:44mobility. I pray that you shed tears for
- 21:48those that are steeped in poverty.
- 21:50I pray that you shed tears because he does.
- 21:55Jesus weeps. He's going to wipe away every
- 22:01tear, friends. He's going to make every wrong
- 22:04thing right. 36 Then said the Jews, behold how he loved him.
- 22:1137 And some of them said, Could not this man which opened the
- 22:16eyes, the blind have caused that even this man should not have
- 22:20died? Their faith is increased.
- 22:23They know what Jesus can do. 38 Jesus therefore, again groaning
- 22:29in himself, he came to the grave.
- 22:32It was a cave, and a stone laid upon it. 39 Jesus said, Take you
- 22:39away the stone, Martha, the sister of him that was dead, set
- 22:43unto him. Lord, by this time he stinketh,
- 22:49for he has been dead for days. He's dead, dead and you know,
- 22:56you look and see that God wants us to meet him.
- 22:59We do the natural and he does the Super.
- 23:02We do what we can do in the human terms and he will do the
- 23:07miraculous friends. He says take away the stone.
- 23:11He could have said it with a word and the stone dissolved.
- 23:14But he wants us to get in the game.
- 23:17He wants us to be found doing the Lord's work.
- 23:21He wants to come alongside of us and get yoked with him, because
- 23:24his burden, his life and his yoke is easy, friends, and it's
- 23:28easy for him to bring this man back after being dead for four
- 23:33days and being stinketh. 40 Jesus said unto her, said, I not
- 23:40unto you, that if you would believe, you should see the
- 23:44glory of God. 41 Then they took away the stone from the place
- 23:50where the dead was laid, and Jesus lifted up his eyes and
- 23:53said, Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 And I knew
- 24:01that you hear me always, but because of the people which
- 24:05stand by, I said it, that they may believe that you have sent
- 24:12me. So here Jesus is showing them
- 24:15that they can believe on him, because Him and the Father are
- 24:19one, and they are acting in full accordance, and they are
- 24:23congruent. The same thoughts and the same
- 24:26mind, friends, God the Father and God the Son and God the Holy
- 24:31Ghost, three in one friends on full display. 43 And when he
- 24:38thus had spoken, he cried out with a loud voice.
- 24:41Voice Lazarus come forth. It's all he has to do.
- 24:47Speak a word, friends and dead things come back to life.
- 24:54Graves turn into a garden. Friends And we see the valley of
- 25:01dry bones We see. Life going in, And sinews skin
- 25:07being made, we see life abundant friends. 44 And he that was dead
- 25:17came forth bound hand and foot with grave clothes, and his face
- 25:22was bound about with a napkin. And Jesus said unto them, Loose
- 25:28him, and let him go. So we can see here that Lazarus
- 25:33came out looking like a mummy, shuffling towards the opening,
- 25:37face covered, body bound, feet bound.
- 25:42And Jesus says loose him. And he says the same thing to
- 25:45you and to me. And those that are caught up in
- 25:49sin and they are experiencing death, he says loose him.
- 25:54And we go into freedom, friends, we go into eternal life.
- 26:00We cannot be afraid of death. We cannot be afraid of it. 45
- 26:07Then many of the Jews which came to Mary and had seen the things
- 26:11which Jesus did, believed on him. 46 But some of them went
- 26:16their way to the Pharisees and told them what things Jesus had
- 26:21done. You can see the division.
- 26:24You can see that they were believing on him, and then they
- 26:28were going and ratting them out. They were going and tattletaling
- 26:32to the religious people. 47 then gathered the chief priests and
- 26:39the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we for?
- 26:44This man does many miracles. What do you do with a man like
- 26:50this? How can you keep him from being
- 26:53believed upon? How can you keep what he's doing
- 26:57a secret in the land? You cannot.
- 27:00It's going out and everyone is interested in Jesus and he draws
- 27:05the line in the sand and makes them make a decision and you
- 27:08cannot stay neutral. 48 If we let him thus alone, all men will
- 27:15believe on him, and the Romans shall come and take away both
- 27:19our place and nation. So here is the whole crux of the
- 27:23whole situation, friends. It's all culminating right here.
- 27:27Pay attention, lock in. This was the reason that they
- 27:31refused to believe him as their Savior.
- 27:35They're saying if everyone goes over and if everyone believes on
- 27:40him, then we're going to lose our temple, we're going to lose
- 27:44our nation. And they were not willing that
- 27:47they would lose it. And so they would rather kill
- 27:52this rogue St. preacher that they actually knew was the Son
- 27:56of God. And it was prophesied.
- 27:58And they killed him and they murdered him.
- 28:01And they thought that they were trying to hush up this
- 28:05groundswell movement, but all they did was fulfill prophecy
- 28:12that had been written about and unknowingly they fulfilled it.
- 28:17And it's no different in our day and our hour.
- 28:19There are many prophecies that are unfolding all around us.
- 28:24And people that are hostile towards God are actually
- 28:28fulfilling the prophecies that He said would happen.
- 28:32And He says these things must happen, but woe to the one whom
- 28:36they come through. Friends, that does not excuse
- 28:39them, much like Judas, it does not excuse their sinful
- 28:43behavior, even though they are fulfilling prophecy. 49 And one
- 28:50of them named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year,
- 28:54said unto them, you know nothing at all.
- 28:58So here we can see that Caiaphas had had a prophetic encounter,
- 29:05and a prophetic vision and a prophetic speech, and let's see
- 29:09what he has to say. 50 Nor consider that it is expedient
- 29:14for us that one man should die for the people, and that the
- 29:20whole nation perish not. 51 And this spoke he not of himself,
- 29:26but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus should
- 29:30die for that nation, 52 and not for that nation only, but that
- 29:37also he should gather together in one in one the children of
- 29:43God that were scattered abroad. So here we can see that Caiaphas
- 29:47being the high priest, he had prophesied that Jesus would die
- 29:51for that nation, and that they would bring in this the ones
- 30:01that were scattered. His death would bring in the
- 30:04Gentiles. 53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together
- 30:11for to put him to death. So it would seem as if they took
- 30:15counsel to put him to death to fulfill the prophecies, but it
- 30:20seems as if that's not the case. You would think that through
- 30:26this passage they knew what they were doing, but they were
- 30:29delusional. Even though he had prophesied
- 30:32this, he was thinking that by Jesus dying they could just get
- 30:36rid of him and so they could keep their little nation.
- 30:40But little did he know that he was actually fulfilling the
- 30:43prophetic scriptures that said all of these things must happen.
- 30:5254 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but
- 31:00went from there to a country near to the wilderness, into a
- 31:04city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.
- 31:10So we know that Jesus often withdrew to desolate places and
- 31:14we know that whenever the disciples went to ask him, they
- 31:18said, teach us how to pray because they saw that his prayer
- 31:22life was connected to to the power that he had and possessed.
- 31:26And all the power was connected to the vibrancy of the
- 31:29relationship that he had with Father God.
- 31:32And they wanted that then they wanted to know how to pray and
- 31:35we should do the same. And you could see Jesus going
- 31:39into the wilderness, getting ready for the grand finale,
- 31:43getting ready for the final countdown, for the showdown
- 31:47between him and the religious leaders, knowing that he would
- 31:51go to the cross and give up the ghost.
- 31:53And that he would give up his life and no one took it from
- 31:58him. And that he would be buried, and
- 32:00that he would be resurrected, and that he would ascend to the
- 32:05right hand of the Father to make intercession for you and for me.
- 32:0955 And the Jews, Passover was near at hand, and many went out
- 32:16of the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify
- 32:21themselves. There is no purification,
- 32:24there's no atonement trends other than Jesus Christ, and
- 32:29they missed the mark. 56 then sought they for Jesus, and spoke
- 32:34among themselves as they stood in the temple.
- 32:38What do you think that he will not come to the feast?
- 32:42So here we can see that they're very interested in Jesus Christ
- 32:47and they want him to make it plain that he is the Messiah.
- 32:51And he refused them. Just like when Herod said do a
- 32:54miracle. So I'll believe he would refuse
- 32:57to do the miracle, friends, because he is not just some
- 33:02enchanter, He's not just some magician, He's not just some
- 33:06genie in the bottle that you can rub the right way.
- 33:09He has got God. He spoke it all into existence.
- 33:12He spoke you and He spoke me. He spoke the galaxies in the
- 33:16depths of the sea, all into creation and all into existence.
- 33:21And we would do well, friends, to lay prostate as a dead man in
- 33:26His presence and give them all the glory, Friends, give them
- 33:30all of His due glory. He is holy, He is holy, He is
- 33:36holy and he is worthy. And only one was found worthy to
- 33:40open the scroll, and it is King Jesus.
- 33:43And they are just interested in Him and his miracles, and
- 33:47they're interested in His teachings, and they're
- 33:49interested in Him as just some kind of entertainment. 57 Now
- 33:56both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a
- 33:59commandment that if any man knew where he was, he should show it,
- 34:05that they might take him. Even whenever he was arrested in
- 34:12the garden. He just says I am.
- 34:15And they fall backwards. He allowed them to take him.
- 34:23This is the God that we serve. How amazing is our God Almighty.
- 34:29He is all knowing and all powerful and all present
- 34:33everywhere, all at once. He's all around you friends, and
- 34:39He loves you. I hope that you've been blessed
- 34:42by this chapter. I know I sure have.
- 34:44I'm praying for every single one of you and I love you.
- 34:58We'll see you back here tomorrow.
- 35:00God bless you.
