- 0:00Speaker 1: The sound of silence is a great song, but that
- 0:02Speaker 1: would make for a crappy podcast. It's one more thing.
- 0:06Speaker 2: I'm strong and one more thing.
- 0:09Speaker 3: We should do that sometime.
- 0:11Speaker 1: What's that?
- 0:12Speaker 3: It'd be like silence, we should it'd be like that
- 0:15Speaker 3: art with the banana tape through the wall. It would
- 0:17Speaker 3: be our commentary on Modern Media or something like that,
- 0:20Speaker 3: or minutes of silence.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Philip Glass, who's that twentieth century avant garde composer who
- 0:27Speaker 1: would have like a symphony that was just an hour
- 0:29Speaker 1: and a half of silence.
- 0:30Speaker 4: Seems like nobody listens to the radio harder than when
- 0:33Speaker 4: they're silenced, though, like.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Oh, what's going on? What happened? What's going on? Maybe
- 0:37Speaker 3: that's just because I'm in right. We got to do
- 0:39Speaker 3: that tomorrow, our commentary on modern Media. Two minutes of silence.
- 0:44Speaker 1: No, Michael would have a heart attack. Yeah, I'd be
- 0:47Speaker 1: getting calls. Alarms would be going off all all over
- 0:50Speaker 1: the road. Lights, yeah, plays plays panic to program directors,
- 0:55Speaker 1: what are you doing? So that was a fancy pants
- 0:58Speaker 1: introduction for the fact that we're going to clean out
- 1:00Speaker 1: the sound fridge and place your sound. That's right, metal guy,
- 1:04Speaker 1: not silence, but sound indeed, the crew they work like
- 1:08Speaker 1: slaves to bring interesting audio to our attention, and we
- 1:12Speaker 1: don't get to it all every day, and so we
- 1:14Speaker 1: thought we'd go ahead and then and review some of it. Katie,
- 1:18Speaker 1: do you want to introduce clip ten here? Yeah.
- 1:20Speaker 4: So this is a video in San Francisco, just outside
- 1:24Speaker 4: of the Tenderloin and the San Francisco Police Department is
- 1:27Speaker 4: trying to clear out an alleyway that is just filled
- 1:31Speaker 4: with bums and junkies. And in this alley there is
- 1:35Speaker 4: a mattress and a guy laying on it and she
- 1:38Speaker 4: is trying to wake him up.
- 1:42Speaker 2: How manned y'all to wake up this dude that sleeping
- 1:45Speaker 2: right here?
- 1:47Speaker 1: So he's sleep.
- 1:50Speaker 5: You know you're to care the alley? Please thank you?
- 1:54Speaker 6: This is hey, hey sleep Hey?
- 2:07Speaker 1: No, that is he alive? Or is the O d ing?
- 2:13Speaker 4: The cop asks the cop asks that over the p
- 2:15Speaker 4: a is he is he alive?
- 2:17Speaker 1: Or is he O ding?
- 2:17Speaker 4: And at the end they were saying that narkan right
- 2:20Speaker 4: there hasn't been used. And when they wake when they
- 2:22Speaker 4: quote unquote wake him up, he is clearly high as
- 2:25Speaker 4: a kite, probably close to an od.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Has there ever been a time in history. Anywhere in
- 2:30Speaker 3: the world where this sort of thing has happened like this,
- 2:33Speaker 3: where he got teeming humanity of out of their mind
- 2:39Speaker 3: dying in large numbers drug or alcohol.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Addicts, opium dens of China, maybe Toronto with their great
- 2:47Speaker 1: experiments on the the drug district, and Amsterdam did it,
- 2:53Speaker 1: but not. I was in Amsterdam for a long time
- 2:57Speaker 1: in what was that, the the end of the eighties. Yeah, yeah,
- 3:04Speaker 1: late eighties, and pot was legal and you could get
- 3:08Speaker 1: cash and that hash and that sort of thing. Oh
- 3:11Speaker 1: I ran straight away from that stuff, Katie. Oh yeah,
- 3:15Speaker 1: twenty three year old. Oh oh, I was outraged by it.
- 3:19Speaker 1: But there were no junkies laying around anywhere it was.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Now there are from what I understand anyway, And why
- 3:26Speaker 1: was it?
- 3:26Speaker 3: Why were people not getting hooked on the whatever and
- 3:30Speaker 3: laying about.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Well, I'm reminded of when a bunch of Euros came
- 3:34Speaker 1: to San Francisco to talk about or compare notes on
- 3:38Speaker 1: the drug rehab centers and safe injection sites and stuff
- 3:41Speaker 1: like this like that, and the Europeans were aghast. We
- 3:45Speaker 1: talked about this on the show a couple of times since.
- 3:47Speaker 1: But they said to the San Francisco people. Wait a minute,
- 3:51Speaker 1: Wait a minute, We don't let people break the law
- 3:56Speaker 1: and sleep on the streets and defecate in public.
- 3:59Speaker 2: No.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Oh, we're here to help you, but you still have
- 4:02Speaker 1: to carry out all of the obligations of a citizen.
- 4:06Speaker 1: What are you doing here?
- 4:08Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 4:08Speaker 4: Well, and it's like, you know, San Francisco has harm
- 4:11Speaker 4: reduction right where they're handing out the syringes and the
- 4:16Speaker 4: lighters and the little all the tools you need to
- 4:18Speaker 4: get high because they think that that's going to save lives.
- 4:22Speaker 1: For what.
- 4:23Speaker 3: So nuts, It is.
- 4:25Speaker 1: So perverse, in the opposite of what is right. Yeah.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Successful, One more thing on San Francisco before we get
- 4:30Speaker 3: back to the sound fridge. From the San Francisco Chronicle today,
- 4:33Speaker 3: the number of people in San Francisco arrested or cited
- 4:37Speaker 3: for petty drug crimes but not drug dealing, has jumped
- 4:40Speaker 3: this year because of the new mayor's push to squash
- 4:42Speaker 3: the city's drug markets. New data from the police department shows, man.
- 4:47Speaker 4: It is going to take so long for that city
- 4:49Speaker 4: to even look close to anything like it used to.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Well, for one thing, if you turned it around today,
- 4:55Speaker 3: it'll take a decade or more before people around the
- 4:59Speaker 3: world John, Oh, it's okay to come back now. Oh yeah,
- 5:02Speaker 3: I didn't know that.
- 5:03Speaker 1: On the other hand, a positive note, behind the scenes,
- 5:06Speaker 1: they call me mister positive. You should know those folks.
- 5:09Speaker 1: A positive note, what this new crackdown? Shut up, Michael,
- 5:14Speaker 1: Oh told you to speak, that's mister positive. On the
- 5:21Speaker 1: other hand, on a positive note, this crackdown will save lives.
- 5:25Speaker 1: It will save many lives during the period to get
- 5:28Speaker 1: back to sanity, then re establish the reputation of San Francisco,
- 5:31Speaker 1: which you guys are talking about. All the kids, the
- 5:34Speaker 1: young people or middle aged people will say, you know what,
- 5:37Speaker 1: being a junkie sucks. Instead of boy, they make it
- 5:41Speaker 1: easy to be a junkie, and they'll think I want
- 5:43Speaker 1: to turn my life around, and they will. And even
- 5:45Speaker 1: if it's ten people, that's great. Anyway. Having said that,
- 5:49Speaker 1: I had to look up once again, because I've looked
- 5:51Speaker 1: this up many times in my life. There are pieces
- 5:53Speaker 1: of trivia like that that you look up and you think, oh,
- 5:56Speaker 1: that's interesting, but it's not quite interesting enough to remember.
- 6:01Speaker 1: And this is another one of those. Why is the
- 6:03Speaker 1: tenderline called the tenderloin, and that's the nickname for tough neighborhoods,
- 6:09Speaker 1: particularly in San Francisco and New York. It's believed to
- 6:12Speaker 1: originated from a New York City police captain, Alexander S.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Clubber Williams. I wonder how he got that nickname. Probably
- 6:19Speaker 1: wasn't because he liked to hang out in clubs anyway,
- 6:22Speaker 1: who reportedly said he could now afford tenderloin steak due
- 6:26Speaker 1: to the bribes he received while policing a vice ridden area.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Interesting, Yeah, isn't it.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Ask me again in a year. I won't remember it,
- 6:35Speaker 1: but yeah, that's where the name came from, the Tenderloin district.
- 6:39Speaker 1: You go down there, you get so many bribes you
- 6:41Speaker 1: can afford tend that looint.
- 6:42Speaker 3: I'm not sure he could be a cop today with
- 6:43Speaker 3: the nickname Clubber.
- 6:45Speaker 4: Oh it's just because he likes club sandwiches.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. Oh that's charming. I like that. You know,
- 6:51Speaker 1: I want to hear that. We played this on the show,
- 6:53Speaker 1: but I just want to hear it again. Hit us
- 6:54Speaker 1: with clip number twelve, the trailer from the brand new
- 6:57Speaker 1: horror film The Monkey.
- 6:59Speaker 7: The coroner said it was an accident, but it was
- 7:02Speaker 7: no accident. It was a monkey. When I was a kid,
- 7:10Speaker 7: my twin brother and I found something that loved to kill.
- 7:15Speaker 3: We have been.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Chosen to witness its power over life and death in
- 7:27Speaker 5: its most devious ways.
- 7:33Speaker 3: It's it's one of those toy monkeys. It's got a
- 7:35Speaker 3: little drum with sticks, and you wind it up and
- 7:37Speaker 3: it goes right at kills you. Heli. Yeah, but then
- 7:42Speaker 3: it'll put a spear right through your head. Dumb ass movie.
- 7:46Speaker 1: What was that line at the beginning of it?
- 7:48Speaker 3: But it wasn't a so call it an accident.
- 7:52Speaker 1: It was, but it wasn't an accident. It was a
- 7:55Speaker 1: monkey of unintentionally humor. But you said, Jack, it's kind
- 8:01Speaker 1: of tongue in cheeks.
- 8:02Speaker 3: He looks like it's supposed to be funny.
- 8:04Speaker 1: That is a really funny line, whether it was intentional
- 8:07Speaker 1: or not.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Yeah, husband confirmed that it's it's kind of a spoof
- 8:12Speaker 4: on horror some of it. Oh, I love that, but
- 8:14Speaker 4: it looks pretty horrrific also, Yeah.
- 8:17Speaker 1: So it solves both of those. Yeah. So you got
- 8:21Speaker 1: the Senator John Kennedy, who evidently, like you know, very
- 8:27Speaker 1: man low or share, is going to stick with the
- 8:29Speaker 1: same act clear until the grave. And that would be
- 8:32Speaker 1: homespun witticisms from Buy you clipped thirty five, Michael.
- 8:37Speaker 2: If it wasn't for double standards in Washington, there wouldn't
- 8:40Speaker 2: be any.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Standards at all.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Most Democrats in the Senate supported what Schumer did, and
- 8:45Speaker 2: they're they're scared of him.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Whatever Schumer says, generally.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Speaking, they just move and following them to the shoot
- 8:54Speaker 2: like cattle.
- 8:57Speaker 1: I was charming and homespun description and.
- 9:00Speaker 4: All trying to figure out what fashion statement he's trying
- 9:05Speaker 4: to make. Right now, I just sent you guys a
- 9:06Speaker 4: picture of the glasses he was wearing during that interview,
- 9:09Speaker 4: and there it's an interesting choice, being edgy and bar.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Oh he's gone with the hipster, brightly colored, funky shaped frames.
- 9:20Speaker 8: Yeah, I'm not sure that's him. Not sure that's on brand, Jack.
- 9:24Speaker 8: You need to get some of those immediately. Well, I
- 9:28Speaker 8: can't criticize him for riding his brand clear into the
- 9:31Speaker 8: grave and yet shaking it up a little bit in
- 9:34Speaker 8: the same segment. I would feel hypocritical, and I don't
- 9:37Speaker 8: want to be that. Let's see, I'm tempted to go
- 9:39Speaker 8: with one, but it's serious. Maybe we'll just keep it
- 9:42Speaker 8: around for them.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Let's play Steve Bannon one more time, just because I
- 9:45Speaker 3: thought that was pretty hilarious that. I mean, we're still
- 9:47Speaker 3: obviously trolling.
- 9:50Speaker 2: And a firm believer that President Trump will run and
- 9:53Speaker 2: went again in twenty twenty eight. So I've already endorsed
- 9:56Speaker 2: person Trump. A man like this comes along once every century.
- 10:00Speaker 2: If we're lucky, we've got him now. He's on fire
- 10:03Speaker 2: and I'm a huge supporter. Want to see him again
- 10:05Speaker 2: in twenty twenty eight.
- 10:07Speaker 3: And was there any follow up question like how exactly
- 10:10Speaker 3: would he run again?
- 10:12Speaker 1: There was, actually, But I will tell you this as
- 10:15Speaker 1: a participant in an analyst of the business, podcasting radio,
- 10:22Speaker 1: whatever you want to call it, spoken word content, think
- 10:25Speaker 1: of that if you are especially a young or slightly
- 10:29Speaker 1: soft headed, impressionable person who loves Trump, how exciting that
- 10:34Speaker 1: is that we're gonna change the constitution and do whatever
- 10:39Speaker 1: it takes to get him elected again. Putting aside that
- 10:41Speaker 1: he's freaking old, I mean, he's tireless for a man
- 10:44Speaker 1: of his age. But and then Bannon will keep it
- 10:47Speaker 1: going with, Hey, we're making progress, We've got an attorney,
- 10:51Speaker 1: we're going to have a hearing, and we're thinking we
- 10:53Speaker 1: can do this and this maneuver will get it done.
- 10:55Speaker 1: And it's a great ratings, stunt.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Well, we've actually got the followup upon to hear this, yep.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Oh you know.
- 11:01Speaker 3: He's term limited. How do you think he gets another term.
- 11:04Speaker 3: We're working on it.
- 11:05Speaker 2: I think we'll have I think we'll have a couple
- 11:07Speaker 2: of alternatives. Let's say that. We'll see we'll see definition,
- 11:13Speaker 2: we'll say what the definition of term limit is. But
- 11:15Speaker 2: this is many years in the makings, so we've had
- 11:17Speaker 2: greater long shots than Trump twenty twenty eight, and I've
- 11:20Speaker 2: got a lot of stuff we're working on there.
- 11:22Speaker 1: We're not prepared to.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Talk about it publicly, but in a couple of months.
- 11:25Speaker 1: I think we will be.
- 11:26Speaker 3: I don't know what the amendment says, but does it
- 11:27Speaker 3: say consecutive terms? If it doesn't, maybe that's the way
- 11:31Speaker 3: they wedge their way in.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:33Speaker 1: He was talking to your workout buddy. By the way,
- 11:35Speaker 1: Chris Cuomo.
- 11:37Speaker 3: You know what I could see this happening? Oh man,
- 11:40Speaker 3: what a mess. It would be bad. I could see
- 11:44Speaker 3: Trump running for the nomination and getting it.
- 11:50Speaker 6: Oh no, don't you can't you imagine enough motivated a
- 12:00Speaker 6: hardcore people coming out and supporting him and just say, yeah,
- 12:04Speaker 6: nobody tells us what to do and he gets, he
- 12:07Speaker 6: wins Iowa, he wins New Hampshire.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I could picture that, But then the maneuver would
- 12:13Speaker 1: have to be because he can't run well well right,
- 12:18Speaker 1: But then the maneuver would be see I'm I'm with
- 12:22Speaker 1: all due modesty, mister a political mind okay, and mister
- 12:26Speaker 1: poss No, the play would have to be Look, Trump
- 12:32Speaker 1: won again. We know he can't run, but he gets
- 12:34Speaker 1: to appoint his successor. Umble, Jay, who is it? We're
- 12:38Speaker 1: not having a vote, We've already voted. And it would
- 12:41Speaker 1: be whoever is in his favorite that moment vance or
- 12:45Speaker 1: who knows who dates. That would be a constitutional crisis.
- 12:53Speaker 1: But it wasn't a crisis. It was a monkey. And
- 12:57Speaker 1: then that didn't work. That didn't work. I tried it.
- 13:02Speaker 1: It didn't work. I can even it's a monkey. The
- 13:08Speaker 1: tenderloin a good cut of meat, but a crappy neighborhood,
- 13:12Speaker 1: well said, Well, I guess that's it.
