- 0:46Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast with my partner.
- 0:51Brian, Sigler, I am Curtis Wilson.
- 0:54Brian, how are you this fine Thursday, evening.
- 0:57Man, doing good doing good. How you doing over there in the
- 1:00West End, buddy? Hanging in there, man, and what
- 1:05feels like an extremely long week?
- 1:07We're wrapping that up tomorrow with it being Friday.
- 1:13You know, at some baseball tonight, starting this a little
- 1:17later than usual but you know, it is what it is.
- 1:20How about you on your side of town?
- 1:22Good man. Started the week with a couple
- 1:24of doctors appointments or kind of adjacent to that son.
- 1:28Had a dentist appointment. I got my second second vaccine
- 1:34dose there, so started with that no side effects for me other
- 1:39than like a little sore arm. So I'll take It but otherwise
- 1:43been a good week, man. Been a real good week.
- 1:46Very nice to hear that man. Very nice to hear that sound
- 1:48like you've been adulting a lot this week.
- 1:51Hell yeah, try my damndest idli. Yeah, every week, it's adulting
- 1:57folks, stay young if you can. All right well folks got a lot
- 2:02to get to today. Obviously with the 420
- 2:05announcement that's going to be our biggest piece tonight.
- 2:08But over the last few weeks there has been some other topics
- 2:10as well. I really appreciate all the
- 2:13listens on the Christina Garnett interview and I think maybe the
- 2:19football program and athletic department might have been
- 2:21listening. There are some things that were
- 2:22discussed that were already seen, but we'll get to that a
- 2:25little bit later but Brian, let's start out right before we
- 2:29press record. Last time we got a nice verbal
- 2:33commitment from Alex orgy, that's Ashley Texas.
- 2:40Restore, we're 15 ranked Jewel, threat quarterback in the
- 2:44country. 6226 he built already. Had offers from Baylor,
- 2:51Michigan. Houston as well as, I mean
- 2:56offers from Oklahoma and TCU what you think of this Pickup
- 3:00Man of a quarterback second quarterback of the class.
- 3:06You know what, I liked it a lot. I feel like with with some of
- 3:09the transfer we had getting to this cycle was necessary so I'm
- 3:13liking that we got got to in already.
- 3:17I like this kid. A lot reminds me of Patterson
- 3:23little Kewpie there, a little bit, one more quote, but a
- 3:28little bit closer, in terms of, like, polished throwing motion
- 3:31to Hendon, then QP there. But still still raw.
- 3:37So he's going to need some work, but sky's the limit in terms of
- 3:42his terms of his talent, because he has that good blend of size
- 3:45and athleticism and a strong arm.
- 3:48So we'll see how it's all summer.
- 3:51The highlights from one of the camps.
- 3:54He was that looks like he's doing pretty good.
- 3:57Slinging the ball around there. So looking forward to getting
- 3:59this campus and seeing what we can do with them in this system?
- 4:04Oh yeah. He had a very impressive Elite
- 4:0611 camps. I don't Southlake Carroll.
- 4:09He was basically considered the best fall athletic quarterback
- 4:15there, which is really good. You know, whether you make the
- 4:19Elite 11, or you get like this, Warden tells the guy, you know,
- 4:23we saw some of the pictures man, he's built.
- 4:27He's one of those kids if he polished in between now and the
- 4:31day he walks on campus, he could compete because there's no,
- 4:35there's no, he's 230 pounds, his legs are huge, his upper body's
- 4:40built. What we like to do with
- 4:42quarterbacks. He could definitely take it.
- 4:45Definitely good. Definitely good pickup.
- 4:48Second Devon, Fair a little different.
- 4:50So it's very Very interesting to see how that all shape out now,
- 4:54weren't down done, yet. In the state of Texas yet.
- 4:57Texas to DT is back everybody. Haha, yeah, that's just a VT is
- 5:02BAC gone but not forgotten. Go knock em dead but very
- 5:07interesting recruit here. Johnny Dixon, the offensive
- 5:11guard at a Flower Bluff and in Corpus Christi Texas, 88, 3
- 5:18star, the 13th, ranked guard in the country.
- 5:22So again, as you get into the offensive line, as you start
- 5:28getting into those teams, is where you're starting to see
- 5:32guys, who are four star star. He's borderline in it right now.
- 5:37Had offers from Oklahoma Oklahoma State, Texas A&M.
- 5:46And one that really caught some folks eyes out there.
- 5:50And I saw somebody mentioned this Arkansas, Arkansas is
- 5:54coached by saying Pittman Sam, Pittman was the guy who put the
- 5:58Georgia offensive lines together the last three or four years for
- 6:00took the Arkansas job. One of those things, somebody
- 6:03said is Sam. Pittman offered him.
- 6:05You want a player like that? I agree 100% with him.
- 6:08Brian. Did you get a chance to peek at
- 6:09his State since he just committed yesterday?
- 6:14I haven't got to look at it bunch of his tape yet.
- 6:16But what I've seen from some of the folks, some of the stuff
- 6:20that's been posted on social media, looks like a perfect fit
- 6:24at guard, definitely a need position in terms of the next
- 6:28three years. In terms of building out the
- 6:30roster especially the way we've been looking at the offensive
- 6:33line. You still concerned about depth
- 6:36on that that unit over the course of the next few years.
- 6:39So it's nice to get a guy in there and with some of the As
- 6:42we're hearing about Jack's sliding down, it potentially
- 6:49Center that. That's some we're starting to
- 6:53fill in at least the interior line over the next couple of
- 6:56years. Potentially.
- 6:57So we'll see what happens if the tackle position.
- 6:59And if we were able to bring in another transfer or get some you
- 7:04know, High 3 and low for Star guys in at that position, going
- 7:08forward, but getting a guy like Johnny Dixon is going to
- 7:11definitely help. Been playing that Texas
- 7:13competition. I'm not sure about the league,
- 7:16whether it's a high-level competition league but there's
- 7:22pretty much no you know, no slouches out there in Texas.
- 7:26So and having a guy that used to be in the in the 757 area to
- 7:31kind of understands the program and what it's all about.
- 7:33So good pickup. I will say though I'll throw a
- 7:37little a little criticism on the end of this year, you know,
- 7:40right now we're treating A guy like Johnny Dixon, this kind of
- 7:44like Top Flight level of the class where he really should be
- 7:49like the meat and potatoes of a class.
- 7:52Yeah, true. I'm with you.
- 7:55Johnny Dixon's a damn good pick up with what he does and where
- 7:58he ranks, but he is not that. He should not be the Crown Jewel
- 8:02of the class that is no disrespect to him.
- 8:06So everybody jumping them down. Is it good?
- 8:09You got two of these commits. Are they solid players?
- 8:12Yeah, but this is kind of what happened last year, you're still
- 8:17looking for the crown jewels. You're still looking for the
- 8:20more Elite guys who put at the top of your class where you have
- 8:26guys like Johnny who are really good players.
- 8:28Now could Dixon an orgy, Step Up intentionally be you know, as
- 8:34you know, sort of the crown jewels.
- 8:36Yes. They both have the build,
- 8:38they're both playing and leagues so they have the potential but
- 8:42you don't want to be thanking this early on.
- 8:44Guys like that. To be your crown jewels.
- 8:48Yeah. You know we're still talking
- 8:50about, you know, late, April here.
- 8:54We don't want to count guys that are high three stars that
- 8:57they're going to get a bump up to that that four-star range.
- 8:59And if they get the bump your they're going to be like in that
- 9:02Fringe area. Anyway they're just going to be
- 9:04on the other side of the of the of the Rope there.
- 9:07So that's still nothing to necessarily.
- 9:09Hang your hat on at the same time, they're good.
- 9:12Solid pickups and should be good contributors to the program
- 9:15going forward. But if we want to build that
- 9:18recruiting momentum, we're going to need to start Landing more of
- 9:20the four-star guys, to kind of, you know, beat our chest a
- 9:23little bit and show the rest of the ACC that we means of
- 9:25business, on the recruiting Trail.
- 9:28Absolutely, absolutely. Let's turn real quick and
- 9:32probably in a few weeks here. Guys, were probably going to go
- 9:33a little bit more in-depth into spring practice.
- 9:37Again, things have been going on in our lives that kind of
- 9:40prevented us from keeping a good heart.
- 9:42Grass, what was going on over the next few weeks?
- 9:45We'll start getting into that but one piece of news that came
- 9:48out. Very disheartening, was Chiang,
- 9:51Rai stores ACL and you feel for the guy played of the Villanova
- 9:57wanted to ascend to take that. Step Up in competition, you get
- 9:59more eyes on him. Potentially, as you put good
- 10:02numbers up at Villanova go to Virginia Tech, he won playing
- 10:07ACC type schedule and I put up numbers may be at looked at in
- 10:10the NFL came in so late last year and kind of started
- 10:16flashing at the end of the season.
- 10:18But it just stinks because you saw what he did in that UVA game
- 10:22as a stick mover and you want a guy like that?
- 10:27You want a guy that it's make easy terms, where the
- 10:30quarterback, you know, What do you think bro?
- 10:35Yeah, I think he did a really good job of that later in the
- 10:38season, getting some separation from the the corners and the
- 10:43secondary that he was going up against having a guy like that.
- 10:46Just even if it's coming in to give tray a few series off here,
- 10:52they're working in the slot. If he needs to give you some of
- 10:56the other guys, a break there, if he could just got it, I've
- 10:59gotten some some extra reps there.
- 11:01I think he would have This a lot.
- 11:04But you know, that's where that's where the stinks here,
- 11:07man. Because, you know, he definitely
- 11:09could have been a high-level contributor at a position where
- 11:12we don't have a whole lot of experience death.
- 11:15You know, I feel like we got a good number of wide receivers in
- 11:18general, but we don't have very many guys at this point, that
- 11:23you can count on like that. We know we can count on because
- 11:26we've seen them do it and we're getting less by the day and
- 11:32That's getting a little scary that you know, beyond the first
- 11:35three or four guys who we who were going to count on.
- 11:38So that's concerning and Chang are going down with that injury
- 11:43definitely makes that even more of a dicey situation.
- 11:47So hopefully we can either get a guy in the portal to Shore that
- 11:50up a little bit or some of the other guys step up this fall.
- 11:56Absolutely 100% more people have got to step up and you know it's
- 12:02one of those places. We have a lot of bodies there
- 12:04who can go out and provide that help it'll be very interesting
- 12:09to see. All right, Brian, let's let's
- 12:12one last piece. We hit a little bit with
- 12:15Christina. The shortfalls of the athletic
- 12:21department. in the football program to put on paid only do a
- 12:27spring game, you don't want to bring people to the city, the
- 12:30town of Blacksburg complaining, you're trying to be safe, you're
- 12:34trying to get it over with Now, that the spring is one thing we
- 12:40should have at least had a spring production.
- 12:43Do you some sort of something stream somewhere should have
- 12:49happened? Whether that's a practice that
- 12:53had cameras, whether that was an actual scrimmage where they just
- 12:57stream on the ACC Network or on hokey Sports, whatever was there
- 13:03needed to be something especially if you.
- 13:05Do you regret to announce this fucking Reach For Excellence?
- 13:10Campaign like masses, what? What better?
- 13:14I mean you talked about it that you were originally planning to
- 13:16roll out of spring game last year, get some Buzz behind the
- 13:20program going into this, offseason going to this little
- 13:23stretch where there's not a lot of news, get some Buzz.
- 13:27So people open their wallets even more freely than they did
- 13:31based on the announcement. Like it's so easy and the thing
- 13:37that stinks for me is that you had like that's that's all
- 13:41fanbase stuff, right? So most Over to my right now was
- 13:44engaging fans and stuff like that but there's so much that
- 13:47could have been done like getting recruits to look at
- 13:50this. That really could have helped on
- 13:52the trail and not let so it's not just a donor thing, it's not
- 13:55just a fan thing. This could have really helped on
- 13:58the recruiting Trail as well saying.
- 14:00This is what we're doing. I mean UCF had like the hashtag
- 14:02jerseys that they had out there. Florida state did something.
- 14:06I mean there's there were so many unique ways of having some
- 14:11sort of spring even if you didn't have.
- 14:13Have people in the stadium at the tailgate, you know, while
- 14:18it's in the stands and shit like that.
- 14:20Like there's so many other way to generate buzz and donations
- 14:25and recruiting that could have been used that weren't I just
- 14:29see it as an opportunity, I don't really care that I
- 14:33couldn't come to the game. It's a missed opportunity to do
- 14:35all those other things. Well, it's, again, it's where
- 14:39whip your bullshit and back in December.
- 14:41We're going to make more access you made.
- 14:43No access. You may know accent, like we got
- 14:47a repackaged version of the hard hat series with more actual
- 14:52practice live footage. But again, we're still not in
- 14:56Christine talked about it and we talked about a little bit the
- 14:59we're not getting the reciprocal stuff.
- 15:01We're not getting the back-and-forth.
- 15:02We're getting very. Here is the stuff you requested
- 15:06and we're either take it or we don't there's not that let me
- 15:11get you involved in the program feel like you're a part of it.
- 15:14It's what she said. It doesn't feel like a fan is
- 15:18running. It feels like a corporation.
- 15:22Here's what you get. Here is what you get here in
- 15:25this. Like, screw that we wanted to
- 15:27see a game. And some of those like will
- 15:31recruit one look at it. Well, if you package it right,
- 15:33they will. If you package it, where you're
- 15:35talking to players where you know what they should have done
- 15:39smart went super silent on it, recorded it talked to like the
- 15:43players on the sideline and say hey hey two nights from now.
- 15:47Check out a SEC network, our stuff dropping, I say some
- 15:50things on. There are current guys talking
- 15:52to recruit our coaches saying things to recruit again.
- 15:57Everybody is been on it and you know what, I think it's
- 15:59partially Just for one day, didn't want to have a spring
- 16:02game in in this was his easy way out.
- 16:05He could say, in the presser on this having people here have
- 16:09been here for five years. None of them have ever been
- 16:11recorded. You had to be in person.
- 16:14We showed up back in 16, it was a great time, great atmosphere.
- 16:18So again, if you're with Babcock, And this is the person
- 16:24that's going to continue to be in charge, he just lay the
- 16:27hammer and say you're going to do this shit.
- 16:30What if I don't want to then you can get your ass out of the
- 16:31fucking program. See you.
- 16:34I'm at some point, just got to take the little victories that
- 16:37you can have. That are really, they're simple
- 16:40on your and, you know, people will say, oh well, it costs
- 16:43money to put on the spring game. Again, whether it does or not,
- 16:47whether it does or not, You could still have recorded a
- 16:52practice, you can still have recorded some sort of scrimmage,
- 16:57that wasn't broadcast on the ACC Network where you have to bring
- 17:00in officials where you have to bring in media Crews and shit
- 17:04like that. You know that they pay officials
- 17:08to come in for every scrimmage. So what's the fucking
- 17:10difference? Our history history, it's not
- 17:15the money, it's not the money loser that like the, the
- 17:18naysayers were claiming it was that the I'll leave it at that.
- 17:21I'm not saying you wouldn't be in the red.
- 17:24I just simply think regardless of what that red is and knowing,
- 17:28it's not that much. It would have been worth it to
- 17:30get it on. Either the network on hokey,
- 17:33Sports scrimmage, practice, whatever the fuck you want to do
- 17:36to be it is a chance to get free exposure to your program in.
- 17:41The best light possible and you don't do it.
- 17:46That is a failure of the leadership of the program and
- 17:50the athletic department in my humble opinion.
- 17:54Boom. All right, let's jump off that
- 17:56because we could go on for days. All right, real quick.
- 18:02Our nice package defensive line feature with Coach wheelchair on
- 18:07it Morel Pollard Mario Kendricks I loved it.
- 18:12I think they did a good job. I like the kind of the realness
- 18:15of the discussion and kind of letting the players say what
- 18:19they want to say. And then I feel like coach
- 18:21tearling kind of wrapped in a bow.
- 18:23Well, and kind of related it back to stuff.
- 18:25You see on the field. I thought it was informative.
- 18:28I liked his energy that he brought to the d-line practice
- 18:31sessions and I liked how guys were holding each other
- 18:35accountable on the practice field as well.
- 18:37I thought that was. That was a good representation.
- 18:39So overall, no complaints on that.
- 18:42I just feel like we need more or something different to go along
- 18:46with that. If that was in conjunction with
- 18:51more, like fan friendly events and things like that, perfect no
- 18:56complaints. But that is being the, the
- 18:59deepest dive of impact that fans are getting and not getting that
- 19:03reciprocal thing that that that's where it kind of kind of
- 19:06hurts for me. So that's really.
- 19:09My only complaint is that this is the most, we get, not the
- 19:13content itself, it's the most. We get the content itself is
- 19:16solid, the content itself should be again.
- 19:20That's a nice little package to have every few weeks.
- 19:26But there's more. Yeah and won't more.
- 19:30We're not satisfied with little packages because little package
- 19:33is just like, okay great. I got to know a little bit more
- 19:37about Barrio see him on the field here that's cool.
- 19:40I want more, let's move on braund obviously the
- 19:46announcement the reach for excellent announcement that came
- 19:49with 420, a 400 million-dollar in flux.
- 19:55Into the athletic department, know it.
- 19:57But let's comment on something real quick.
- 19:59Before we get into it, they definitely put that in the
- 20:02morning on purpose. Because if they put in the
- 20:06afternoon, everyone was going to be fucking baked.
- 20:10I mean, Tommy, how's it work? For a while?
- 20:23Inside circles like something's bigs coming, it's going to
- 20:28change the landscape of the whole you know, the football
- 20:31Department significantly, the athletic department.
- 20:35Really big and it's things that since we started this podcast,
- 20:40we've called for in their hands out on, you know, Twitter.
- 20:45I don't social media, you know, questions being asked by the
- 20:48media and kind of all finally came to fruition.
- 20:52And we're going to kind of hit it in piece by piece goes.
- 20:54We're going to start with comments from whipped machine.
- 20:57Me Tim sayings then wit, look at the castle renovation and then
- 21:00get into the football stuff. Let's just go ahead.
- 21:04Look Start with the sayings. He said it working set.
- 21:08It only Athletics are important. Were you shocked?
- 21:15I wasn't shocked that he thought it.
- 21:18I'm shocked. He said it out loud because
- 21:22anybody that looks at any data piece about Virginia Tech knows
- 21:27that Athletics have driven a lot of the economic Goodwill.
- 21:34In the community and in the school, if you don't see that
- 21:38you're fucking blind, it was nice.
- 21:41That he said it, he did point out that like some of the
- 21:46efforts with this started with the boundless impact campus-wide
- 21:50fundraising campaign, that began.
- 21:52I guess they were discussing it as far as four years back, they
- 21:55launched it in Earnest and early 2019.
- 21:59And this was kind of supposed to be built off from that and then
- 22:03announced at the spring game. 20/20.
- 22:06And then obviously covid happened and things shut down in
- 22:11mid-march. And apparently everything got
- 22:13put on hold, which was probably the right move, but I think in
- 22:17the interim, we didn't realize how much Goodwill the program in
- 22:24general, would lose in the interim.
- 22:26And I think that kind of put put put, put the impetus on them to
- 22:32get this out as sooner as soon as able and get this ball
- 22:36rolling. And I mean they've talked about
- 22:38some of the things that were part of this.
- 22:41We're starting to be put in place without a formal
- 22:44announcement last year like some of the additional recruiting
- 22:48positions, but it was good to hear Sans acknowledge that and
- 22:52it was good to hear what we had to say after that, it's very
- 22:55true, the biggest piece of it that you know 400 million but
- 23:00the university itself is going to be increasing its money to
- 23:04help. Help move for jigna Tech into
- 23:06the operating. Having the operating money of
- 23:10the top third of the programs in the ACC and you start moving top
- 23:14third of the ACC, you're essentially moving into the top
- 23:1725 in the country. And that's the, that's the big
- 23:21piece. We're going to get into a little
- 23:22bit because wit gave the number and I don't think me and you
- 23:26were shot because I think we looked last year at some of the
- 23:29numbers. And it was like, we need to be
- 23:30higher because we looked at other peoples.
- 23:33But to have Tim Sands, kind of a kind of say it, you know, say it
- 23:38that it's important. All the sports are important.
- 23:41All the sports are doing well. He kind of even, you know, kind
- 23:46of having kind of gloss over like football that have the best
- 23:49butt. We're we're football now needs
- 23:54to become the cash cow that it is so but on sayings you got the
- 24:02Amazon, you got it rolling. Now you're dumping money to what
- 24:06is the most visual? Aspect of your University while
- 24:13program in the basketball program.
- 24:15Now, let's jump over to wit. So many different places where
- 24:22you want to go on this? Brian.
- 24:25So, anything I'd say, let's start with the goal for the, the
- 24:30football budget, and the total operating budget for the
- 24:34athletic department. So, we're talking about, looks
- 24:38like a over 25 million dollar increase in the operating annual
- 24:44operating budget over the next, what four years that's playing.
- 24:49Yeah, and the goal for the football budget is for a 30
- 24:53million increase over various elements of their budget in that
- 24:57same time frame. So that's not necessarily
- 25:00operation. So if you're doing the math,
- 25:01obviously 25 million, increase, 30 million increase.
- 25:04Something's a job in there. The 30 million is spread over
- 25:06various elements of the budget operations being one of them.
- 25:10So some part of that 30 million chunk is in the 25 million.
- 25:13That's going, that's the goal for the, the total athletic
- 25:16department, but they emphasize that football is important.
- 25:20They are going to invest in it going forward.
- 25:24Um, but the other big thing we that we talked about was you're
- 25:30bringing it to the level of bringing everything with leg
- 25:33department, but football in particular to the level of the
- 25:36peers in the conference and I think that's something that we
- 25:40had been harping on a lot is that, you know, we're in the 40s
- 25:46on most of these things, in terms of the financial
- 25:48investment lower on some ends higher on others.
- 25:51But average somewhere in the mid to high 40s in these These
- 25:54things. And we need to be at least at
- 25:57that, top 25 level and hopefully overachieve, you know, based on
- 26:02the, the financial input that we're putting in there, and can
- 26:04take the next step and compete for ACC championships again.
- 26:09And he did say it compete for national titles.
- 26:12Absolutely. Well, he compared budget-wise,
- 26:15ACC of the top dogs or where you are with Clemson Florida State
- 26:20and he did mention Notre Dame Louisville and he's assuming
- 26:24Miami, they are on operating budget of 130 million dollars.
- 26:29This brings us up to 125 and where we were wants eight to ten
- 26:34in this sort of category or now probably going to be positioned
- 26:38probably right at five. Yeah.
- 26:42Anywhere between four and six depending on one year depending
- 26:46on on various things. Yeah, you out.
- 26:50Raise one year, you go higher. But the point that he made was
- 26:53we had been down there, you talked about in the 40s, we're
- 26:56talking about in the bottom half of the ACC Finance wise and
- 27:02still overachieving still during the latter years of Frank, when,
- 27:07you know, having gone to the Sugar Bowl, winning 10 games,
- 27:11Early part of the winter are the ten, winning the nine win
- 27:14Seasons doing that on a low-end budget.
- 27:18And we do get the basketball program and how it's done.
- 27:21You know, with Buzz. Now, Mike on a lower-end budget.
- 27:25That's damn impressive. He's damned impressive takes.
- 27:29Look at 16 and 17 and look at what buzz and Mike Young's done
- 27:32with basketball and said, we were competing like that and we
- 27:36didn't have near the amount of funds.
- 27:37That's insane. You know, go do that to Clemson.
- 27:43I have a feeling one compete that well, but, you know,
- 27:47another thing that he said, Brian and me and you kind of And
- 27:56kind of talked about it a little bit.
- 27:59Was what essentially saying his goal is for Virginia Tech to
- 28:03become The role model program. If we wrap up our pants and we
- 28:09said here, and we were talking, what are the role model programs
- 28:13or programs top football and basketball, do your Olympic
- 28:18sports are some of the best. First one that popped in my head
- 28:23was Florida. And the first one that popped
- 28:27into my head was Michigan. And you think about those
- 28:30programs, those are very good in football, but they're very good
- 28:34in basketball. But baseball programs have made
- 28:37the College World Series in the last five years.
- 28:39Each have Olympic and other sports Florida volleyball.
- 28:44Huge go. Michigan has some of their
- 28:47Olympic sports. This big top to bottom, they're
- 28:50competing in everything and believe it or not.
- 28:52You think about the way we are right now, less football.
- 28:55That's the way the Hokies are looking basketball.
- 28:59Rank this year. May the tournament baseball
- 29:02ranked. Well on its way to making the
- 29:04NCAA Baseball. Tournament Wrestling top 10
- 29:08program won the ACC, Jules what for all Americans at.
- 29:15Indoor track and field men's championship, softball shrink
- 29:22soccer's. Making that you want to talk
- 29:25about building it the Lesser programs, are they?
- 29:28And I know something mean you talked about Brian that maybe
- 29:31people don't agree with what with did, but maybe the goal was
- 29:37I've got to fix this. Get the baby ready, get football
- 29:42and basketball, ready? Because now with the renewed
- 29:45interest in those non-revenue Sports, there's going to be some
- 29:50big donor. You talk about it, Brian.
- 29:52There's going to be some big donor at lausanne or maybe they
- 29:56ran it Tech and they wouldn't have a significantly successful
- 29:59career that says, well, how much money does indoor track need
- 30:02this year? 200,000 dollar, operating budget
- 30:05rights. Check he go.
- 30:07That's what what gets to do when you look at the foot.
- 30:09Ball money. You don't need to write a check
- 30:12for indoor track. Somebody's covered it already.
- 30:17It definitely gives him more flexibility with the budget to
- 30:21put more money back into football.
- 30:23If other sports are more self-sufficient and we're not
- 30:26talking, we're not talking about the non revs, all of a sudden
- 30:31being 100%, you know, liquid with with their operating
- 30:37budget. Like, they're still going to
- 30:39need The money that's coming from football operations, to
- 30:44fund, various aspects of their sport but the less that has to
- 30:49be pulled from the revenue that football generates and put into
- 30:54these non-revenue. Sports, the more, the revenue
- 30:56that football generates gets to stay in football.
- 31:00And that's a good thing for long-term.
- 31:01And that's a good thing, especially when done in
- 31:05conjunction with these budget increases with these incentives
- 31:11and goals for the program, before we move into those five
- 31:16pillars for the football program.
- 31:17The, let's talk a little bit about the castle renovation
- 31:21plan. What do you think of it buddy?
- 31:24It looks awesome. I mean, it really does.
- 31:28It is, you know, it's taking a piece of architecture that was
- 31:31built, late 1960s, early 1970s, it's keeping the architectural
- 31:38Integrity, they're bringing it into the 21st century.
- 31:45You know, we talked about it's not going to be one complete
- 31:47overhaul because he really wants to the team to stay there.
- 31:50I think that's very smart. I think, you know, trying to
- 31:54move it down to Salem Civic Center or over to the Roanoke
- 31:59Civic Center. While you're doing this, don't
- 32:02do that. You've got a buzz going with
- 32:05Mike yelling right now. Yep.
- 32:08Keep the heat not only the fans engaged to being on campus.
- 32:13Keep the students engaged to being on campus.
- 32:16Now that keep that home court advantage in place to, because
- 32:20people do not like to play in Castle.
- 32:23No, they don't. They don't, it is that I've
- 32:27never been in Castle. Goal will be to go probably in
- 32:30the next few years during the renovations.
- 32:32But again, those buildings the way they're built, it's just
- 32:36like think about using the free throws about the way it's set
- 32:39up. It's an awkward free.
- 32:41Throw shot to the student section.
- 32:44They show that behind picture in here, like me.
- 32:45That is the depth perception with the fans kind of Cohen up
- 32:49down. Very weird tough place to play
- 32:52now. Brian, we talked about the four
- 32:54year phase. Me and Brian.
- 32:57What? Babcock, if you're listening.
- 32:58We want to tell you how this phase needs to be done.
- 33:02All right. He's won.
- 33:07He's won. Completely redo the boxes.
- 33:13Nothing else in Phase 1, micron. Redo the boxes that was my first
- 33:19thought. Like I said, I don't know to
- 33:22what degree, any sort of exterior modifications going to
- 33:25be need for needed for this, but getting the boxes in there does
- 33:30a big thing which is you get more money for those seats,
- 33:37which thin then be put back into the budget for the further
- 33:43Renovations that are needed to be completing this phase.
- 33:45So if You get the boxes done, then things start paying for
- 33:49themselves, a little bit more. Oh yeah.
- 33:51And you're also keeping donors who are writing the biggest
- 33:54checks, happy, you're giving them a new home.
- 33:57Take their clientele into you have potentially other big money
- 34:02donors to come in and say, hey, yeah, I'm giving someone.
- 34:04So and this is my box. What do you think of it?
- 34:06I want one. Hope you're gonna have to pay
- 34:09more money bing bing bing bing. The second piece of it that we
- 34:18discussed would be. Like, for me it's like school
- 34:22will change the Aesthetics on the inside next.
- 34:27And why say the Aesthetics the new scoreboard, the new walkways
- 34:31you're seeing and not the seating per se is because bring
- 34:36people in there and show them this all the new stuff that's
- 34:40happening. Probably new concessions, the
- 34:43new scoreboard, the new visual stimulation because it have
- 34:49someone who is looking at purchasing season tickets in the
- 34:52future. You're selling them at selling
- 34:56them about this is this is awesome.
- 34:59Atmosphere is great, this looks good.
- 35:01What do you say? I agree with that because as
- 35:04much as the seat, I put my ass in his important, some of that
- 35:08other stuff is more important in the short term.
- 35:10I feel like because most people going to put their ass in
- 35:13whatever they enjoy, whether whether it's uncomfortable or
- 35:17not, whether it's tighter than they like whatever.
- 35:19The problem with the physical seat itself, baby.
- 35:23If the Other stuff going around them stimulates them the way
- 35:26they want to. They're going to more or less be
- 35:29happy. For less be having an experience
- 35:34upgrade without the physical seat upgrade wall without the
- 35:38fit because if you were to take someone who is interested in
- 35:42basketball and the boxes are done in the seats are done
- 35:46great. Just looks like an old stadium.
- 35:50It's not that in potentially purchase taken.
- 35:54Third of already said it. It's the seat then deceit
- 35:58because you've kept a big money, happy you've got something that
- 36:04interest people that brings them in the building.
- 36:06Now, I'll make them comfortable. And then lastly Brian me and you
- 36:13our prior conversation couple days ago, then you do the
- 36:16outside work but the outside be the last piece.
- 36:21Again Aesthetics are nice. Aesthetics may help a little bit
- 36:24with recruiting and just general feel of campus, but the people
- 36:28that are going that are paying money to go to these games.
- 36:31I think care more about what's happening inside the walls than
- 36:34what's happening outside. Absolutely.
- 36:38And I think what's currently going on with the basketball
- 36:40program. you know that kyiv testing the waters, but you
- 36:46still feel like even if he doesn't come back Top 25, top 30
- 36:52team tournament team if Keith comes back but like adding storm
- 36:57Murphy and potentially and the kid out of use.
- 37:00USF, if Keith comes back. I think we're ranked like 12 to
- 37:07open the season. I'd say, somewhere in that range
- 37:10and somewhere in the 10 to 15, for sure.
- 37:13That's kind of what I was begging their so that's going to
- 37:17be big for that program and that's going to, you know, it'll
- 37:20be, it'll be interesting to see how that team reacts with those
- 37:24type of expectations but on them because that's something that
- 37:27you've over your essentially been a year early year, 1 and
- 37:31year 2 under Mike young. Let's see with these
- 37:33expectations how the team reacts and what they do because I think
- 37:38the sky's the Limit in terms of what they can achieve, they just
- 37:44got to go and do it and make sure they come together and play
- 37:47the play. The type of basketball that they
- 37:48need to at a consistent level because consistency has probably
- 37:51been the one thing that has dog. The team, the last two years is
- 37:55that, you know, they'll have, you know, three three, good
- 38:00games play really, really well up to competition.
- 38:03And then have a game where they play down to some lesser
- 38:07competition, or have a game where they just and for whatever
- 38:10reason, the ball just won't go in the damn hoop and shrimp and
- 38:14they lose a game that they on paper should have one and if we
- 38:18can get those games minimized or eliminated then that's going to
- 38:25be really big for that program. Is that means, then you're
- 38:28looking at You go 500 against those top tier opponents or 500
- 38:33or better against those top tier opponents and you're looking at
- 38:36a higher rank in the ACC tournament.
- 38:40You looking at a higher rank going into the NCAA tournament
- 38:43and then you can make a try to make a run depending on how
- 38:46those matchups lineup. And true, again, great things
- 38:51for the basketball program. Great thing for the athletic
- 38:53department in general. But as we've already mentioned
- 38:57before, this is a massive boost to the football program.
- 39:02Probably something that should have been done quite a few years
- 39:05ago. You're getting the resources
- 39:08they need. Football which stimulate the
- 39:12local economy up to 100 million dollars?
- 39:14A year, getting things that need to get back to the level of the
- 39:19expectations. That assist fans, you know,
- 39:23going on, 20, 25 years expected to be and what we're going to go
- 39:29through. Now guys, is we're going to
- 39:31break down the five sections that were specifically discussed
- 39:34with the dollar amounts and kind of, not only how we think is
- 39:39going to help but little Maybe our visions of what we hope they
- 39:43do. Brian, let's start with the
- 39:46number one. We talked about getting to
- 39:48recruit Sara Lee. Let's talk about recruiting
- 39:51recruit staff, man. That's the big one.
- 39:54That's the one they LED off with, and that's the one that,
- 39:58you know, they did the whole silent roll out a little bit
- 40:01starting last year with some of the new positions looks like
- 40:05they're looking to grow that even further as I heard
- 40:08something about them currently Looking to fill eight positions
- 40:11on that across that staff going into 2021, that's going to be
- 40:17big because recruiting is definitely the area.
- 40:21I think that we have fallen the most short in terms of the
- 40:26controllable aspects or at least the Quasi controllable aspects
- 40:30that really have Money plays a role, but not as much of a role,
- 40:37but getting positions. Like this can highlight the
- 40:40areas that we've done. Well, in, in the recruiting
- 40:43Trail and minimize some of those negative aspects that we've seen
- 40:48over the few years. So, getting those hires is going
- 40:51to be big and seeing how that grows.
- 40:53And like I said, the Highlight they made was full-time staff
- 40:58versus volunteers and that's really big for those on campus
- 41:03visits, that's really big. We're staying in contact with
- 41:06these recruits on a more regular basis and I'm looking forward to
- 41:11seeing that pay some dividends whether it's with this coach or
- 41:16the next coach. I feel like this is going to be
- 41:19the biggest impact for the school.
- 41:22Well, you know, it can be it, absolutely is and they're
- 41:24talking about, it's five million dollars over six years, you
- 41:28know? And that's the X additional.
- 41:30There's already a small budget there.
- 41:32You probably might guess it's Really going to make the budget
- 41:35a million dollars a year, maybe a little over maybe slightly
- 41:38under. But anyway, getting to the level
- 41:41of a top-25 program and it's the position you talk about the pain
- 41:47positions versus volunteers and don't get me wrong, this is no
- 41:50knock on the volunteer, but when it's your job to do this and get
- 41:57to put it on a resume or you're trying to work your way out of
- 42:01this, in the history of collegiate.
- 42:04It potentially professional football.
- 42:06Having a paying job is very important.
- 42:09Having something you put on your resume, saying what you did is
- 42:12super important. So, you know, again, we're
- 42:17getting we need to be now This was announced y'all know me and
- 42:23Brian's creative aspirations kind of went crazy.
- 42:26And we were going back and forth.
- 42:29Like how would we set this up? If this was Brian and Curtis is
- 42:34brainchild, how would we set this up?
- 42:38And I told Brian, the one piece I want.
- 42:42Is I want essentially a relationship staff, client
- 42:46manager staff. He's a recruit manager staff and
- 42:51these people are not necessarily worried about the game though.
- 42:57They worried about every other aspect of that kid's life,
- 43:00they're worried about how they're doing in school, you
- 43:02want to get to know the parents, the siblings, the aunts, the
- 43:06uncles, the trainer's where they, you know, what are their
- 43:10interests? What do they like to eat?
- 43:12What's going to be their major? I want a division like that.
- 43:17So when a four-star recruit out of the beach is coming up for a
- 43:23visit, there's someone who knows that kid's life in and out and
- 43:28can give Cliff Notes versions to Heather, his primary coaching
- 43:32recruiter. He's you want the person that's
- 43:35assigned to that recruit when they walk off the bus on
- 43:38Saturday? Telling them man.
- 43:41Y'all kick the shit out of Bayside like yeah.
- 43:45Like you want them to know what's important to them.
- 43:50Know what buttons to press and understand that, which aspects
- 43:56of the recruiting process are important to them and who in
- 44:00their sphere of influence is important to them and key to
- 44:03their decision-making process solutely.
- 44:10Now, Brian, you've obviously had another side you want.
- 44:15Yeah, I want I want, I want guys that are dedicated to looking at
- 44:19the, the game tape, the football stuff.
- 44:23The the stuff I like the sitting in front of a video screen for
- 44:29four hours and hours and then Pat filtering that information
- 44:33and passing it on the coaches. So they can better evaluate the
- 44:38talent that's coming in. In watching as much Camp tape as
- 44:42you can watching as much your game tape in Season watching
- 44:46anything, you can get your hands on practice tape from the high
- 44:49school, practice tape from the seven-on-seven like anything
- 44:53that you can grab and watch and see the intricacies of a
- 44:58recruits game. So that not only is the coach
- 45:02able to say, yeah this guy's a scheme fit or this guy's a skill
- 45:06fit but also know so they can start getting Their minds
- 45:10turning. Once I get this guy in, what can
- 45:13I do with him? Because I know his skills that I
- 45:15understand his skills at a deep level setting them up for a good
- 45:21experience. Once they're on campus, once
- 45:24they're in practice, once they're in the weight room, once
- 45:26they're in the conditioning room, all of that stuff is
- 45:30important. It's true and like in Brian
- 45:35mentioned this you but like, the way I see this is you're going
- 45:38to have. Obviously you're going to have
- 45:40your lower level. Like to me group managers you're
- 45:45recruiting analyst your game analyst to me, you would have a
- 45:50director, you setting the big vision and then to like
- 45:56co-directors or operations managers for each side.
- 46:00And they're going to do partially, do the rolls, but
- 46:03they're also setting the expectations.
- 46:06It's a hierarchy, it has to be. And I don't think having just
- 46:09one primary director of recruiting give everybody their
- 46:14Direction. I don't think that's the way to
- 46:16go. We'll see.
- 46:21LeBron, let's move on obviously, recruiting important.
- 46:24I'm interested to see the number of recruiting positions that we
- 46:27can count a year from now on the website.
- 46:31Mark that it's go back and do it.
- 46:33But Brian, what it? What a deal, wu-tang's and song.
- 46:38Say Cash rules, everything around me.
- 46:42Dolla, dolla bills. Y'all the assistant coaching
- 46:47staff Cool. Is going to be in the course of
- 46:53a six-year span going up over 10 million dollars.
- 46:58And some people will say, well, who gives you shit, you know,
- 47:02there's other people that can pay them.
- 47:05Well, here's the thing. About coaches, sometimes get
- 47:08comfortable, like all of us. if you have a shooting star who is
- 47:14killing it, not only on the recruiting Trail, but
- 47:17potentially also as a positional coach Where it felt like the
- 47:22last five or six years, you know, I always felt like, you
- 47:26know, there's certain times people leave, you got this kind
- 47:29of money and strokes check. Give raises when they're needed.
- 47:34If you need to move on from a guy, you can afford to bring in
- 47:37a top-flight candidate to fill the role.
- 47:41You can finally play. Pay your offensive and defensive
- 47:44coordinators top-level money. You can because you can feel
- 47:49comfortable going to a million dollars for a coordinator.
- 47:52If you've got the flexibility to still be above 250 for pretty
- 47:57much every position coach and, you know, average in the 100
- 48:01range per position coach. And that's what this budget is
- 48:04going to afford, and that's going to be huge.
- 48:07That's going to be very huge. And that that to me other than
- 48:10the recruiting is, you know. They said there's not a
- 48:13hierarchy here. I absolutely believe top to
- 48:16bottom. This is the where they want to
- 48:19focus first. If the money's there they I
- 48:22think they're going to increment all aspects of this in terms of
- 48:26their rollout, whether its facilities, which you haven't
- 48:28gotten to yet the other aspects. But but you know, if you're
- 48:33putting chips in a bucket, they're putting two or three
- 48:36chips in the first two or three buckets, when they're putting
- 48:39one or two in the last two that's just all the way I'm
- 48:43seeing it. You damn right.
- 48:45Um and you know think about the assistant pool and think of it
- 48:51those out there. Think of it this way.
- 48:55We've been on record saying, we don't feel great about this
- 48:58upcoming season, just don't hope for wrong, but we hope we're
- 49:02wrong. We hope we are proved wrong at
- 49:04the end of the year. But now with this type of
- 49:07assistant, coaches budget, when you go out and pay, we're
- 49:11clearly paying top dollar for their head coach.
- 49:14Yep, I can highest paid in the ACC.
- 49:17I think he is a top 20. Paid head coach at have to go.
- 49:19Look if not, he's borderline in it.
- 49:22I want to save 16. But I could be wrong with that
- 49:26but I think it's top 20 so he's not getting Global money.
- 49:30We know we can pay what it means is if we do have that bad season
- 49:35and we do have to terminate the current head coach.
- 49:40When you go out and go look for that next head, coach, your lane
- 49:46to say. Whatever you want for your
- 49:48assistant coaches, we're going to be able to get it done and
- 49:53with the recruiting staff, however, you want this built-in
- 49:55looking, we're going to be able to get it done.
- 50:00And you're talking about opening up candidacy of maybe.
- 50:04We'll here's the three or four guys were looking at to say.
- 50:06Listen, we can look at a lot of different potential head coaches
- 50:11and they can look at the absolute pipe dollar assistance.
- 50:21I Braun the other one, the pillar number three which isn't
- 50:28trailing too far behind if the first two guys.
- 50:30Three drops. Three coins in the bucket.
- 50:32This one's probably getting too, but the football, operation
- 50:36staff. Which Brian kind of sits there
- 50:39and says, where was this 20 years ago?
- 50:42When I graduated college? But if you're talking again,
- 51:10it's 5 million, I'm sure there's a small budget there.
- 51:13Again, you're talking about it getting upper close to a million
- 51:17dollars a year. It's going to be big and I know
- 51:22we talked about it a little bit on our quick hit.
- 51:24But you know what these essentially are.
- 51:27He's like you got quality control on on the lower end
- 51:31that's usually going to be the younger guys that you're
- 51:33bringing in and then you've got the offensive and defensive and
- 51:38special teams analyst roles that are usually for the more
- 51:40veteran, either former coaches or guys that have been in those
- 51:45systems for a long time, that have seen how the good programs
- 51:49Work have seen things top to bottom and can can kind of catch
- 51:52those blind spots that coaches, may be missing whether it's at
- 51:56practice or whether it's things going on behind the scenes.
- 52:00So I think all of that is important having those more
- 52:04youthful, guys, learning the ropes.
- 52:07But also making sure that if things are running the way they
- 52:10need to from a quality standpoint and then also the
- 52:13analyst making sure that Everything's going smooth from a
- 52:19practice perspective from a coach's prep perspective.
- 52:23I know that Jerry kill. Did a lot of that when he was
- 52:27here we need like two or three of those guys.
- 52:30On each side of the ball, not just one or two in the whole
- 52:37program and this type of budget you can do that.
- 52:41Yeah. I mean you're talking about when
- 52:44you getting close to probably probably close to them.
- 52:46In and you don't, let's get a couple guys on each side of the
- 52:51ball and maybe one other analysts to either cover special
- 52:54teams or just kind of be a catch-all.
- 52:57Yeah. You could probably have five big
- 52:59big guys probably making anywhere I'd say 90 thousand two
- 53:04hundred fifty thousand two based on their resume and then you
- 53:07talk about the what you saw at the Quality Control guys guys
- 53:10who are fresh who are trying to get their first start in the
- 53:12business and giving them a reasonable salary and to come To
- 53:16your program. You know, I'm interested to see
- 53:20what both through this, and the recruiting will do to the ga
- 53:23rolls because now our they're still going to be GA rolls or is
- 53:29it more? I think they'll be GA roles but
- 53:31they're not going to be essentially quasi, assistant
- 53:35coaches anymore. I mean, so many of those roles
- 53:39have become. All right.
- 53:42Well if you're a ga you're almost like assistant position
- 53:46Coach in training, that's more or less what it's been.
- 53:51And I think that's going to turn into more of a traditional GA
- 53:56roll, kind of prepping you for your first step into either.
- 54:02The quality control role or a position coach role.
- 54:05Whatever comes available based on your skill set and what you?
- 54:10What you bring to the table. Yep.
- 54:13All right, the fourth pillar was essentially Player Development
- 54:17at two million. Something that sounded really
- 54:19emphasized. It caught my ear was essentially
- 54:22getting these guys prepared for Life After Football.
- 54:26Life After College and and I think it's I think it's such a
- 54:33good thing when you think about it because Brian you were an
- 54:37athlete in college even though it was D3, you guys had
- 54:42mandatory study. Hall's, you had to keep certain
- 54:44gpas you had. I'm pretty sure you had some
- 54:47tutors if you need it. You have people on you all the
- 54:51time, the say we're going to take that guy, you know who I
- 54:57mean? He's busting his ass, you know,
- 54:59getting up at 4:30 probably, you know, going training knows.
- 55:03Here's what he's got to be his meals, taking them out of that
- 55:05element and just put him into the real world.
- 55:07That to me. I can see that as a culture
- 55:09shock. Absolutely it absolutely man for
- 55:13sure. And and if you're talking about
- 55:16getting these guys prep for life, after it's such a good
- 55:20thing and I'm sure it's going to be so much more about it in.
- 55:23You're already here in the name, Sam Stewart a lot, I know she
- 55:26doing stuff with alumni, I'm not sure if she's going to be
- 55:29involved with this directly, I'd have to look up her title.
- 55:32But what's your, what's your biggest?
- 55:35Take on this brand. Yeah, sofu called it out
- 55:39directly and mention Sam Stewart by name.
- 55:42Apparently, she's been absolutely killing it since
- 55:44getting to Blacksburg, so that's awesome.
- 55:48And he emphasized that as being. Probably the thing he wants to
- 55:51grow the most, in terms of the impact on the players, and he
- 55:57kind of described it as like, not academics and not Athletics,
- 56:02but everything in between that these student athletes deal with
- 56:07As being both players while they're at the University and
- 56:10then kind of what happens in that life after realm.
- 56:13So getting that develop, I think is going to be really, really
- 56:16great. And I think that's, you know,
- 56:20quality of life for players is important and that that stuff
- 56:24like that can keep players from entering the transfer portal,
- 56:28because not everything is just about playing time and not
- 56:31everything is just about, oh, well, I'm far from home, like,
- 56:35sometimes it's other stuff. Times.
- 56:37It's those little things that may not may be falling through
- 56:41the cracks. And this is I think the overall
- 56:44thing here with with, with point three and four, is that a lot of
- 56:50this is taking away the blind spots.
- 56:54I feel like the quality and the analysts take away the blind
- 56:56spots for the coaches. And I think this also fills in
- 57:01some of the blind spots of the coaches have, in terms of how
- 57:04the players feel, how the players are.
- 57:07Are doing outside of the classroom and outside of the
- 57:11locker room and outside of the stadium.
- 57:14And I think that'll that'll help things going forward for that
- 57:16player quality of life. Absolutely.
- 57:20And to me, the first four pillars, you got my blind spot
- 57:23with coaches. What this is doing for the
- 57:25coaches, obviously, is giving them more money.
- 57:28The other three are giving them, your job is to coach football.
- 57:34Is your job to be involved in the players.
- 57:35Like? Hell, yeah.
- 57:37But can you see every single aspect of their life before they
- 57:40get here or while they're here? No, you can't.
- 57:43They're filling in that Gap. So, the coaches can go out and
- 57:46coach, and know, and having this Player Development type stuff.
- 57:50Hey listen, he's had some rough classes lately and keep that in
- 57:54my mind if I see him unfocused. Yeah, I mean, the best coach in
- 57:59the world. Kill me that guy 285 players all
- 58:06the time. Nope, the more support you can
- 58:09have in that area, the better. It's true.
- 58:15Very true. And again what that helps them
- 58:18is I'd say this produce, not worrying less about that more
- 58:24time in the film room, more time, prepping.
- 58:27More time for jet sweeps. The short side of the field.
- 58:32Ordinal, 14, quarterback, power on Third, and 20, because those
- 58:41are like those plays. Now, if I see them after
- 58:43everything of this is implementing the next year and
- 58:45we still have the current coaching staff.
- 58:47It's like, well, at least you thought more about it this time,
- 58:51more about it. In the next few years.
- 59:19Whether it be the stadium itself, Beamer born, they're
- 59:22going to need upgrades simple as that.
- 59:25And To go ahead and say, well, we're going to keep eight
- 59:27million over here. In case, we need it right now
- 59:31who's to say that this type fundraising effort, Doesn't
- 59:36generate more money than it needs.
- 59:39You know, then they well we do need some to update that but we
- 59:45got an extra 3 million so we can go ahead and move this over to
- 59:50the recruiting and the assistant coaches into the analytical
- 59:54budget into the Player. Development budget to get more
- 59:58people to help those guys out. So, what I think it's good that
- 1:00:02they're putting in here because Now, it's not.
- 1:00:07Completely on. The big donors to come through
- 1:00:12for some of these projects you can incrementally build up each
- 1:00:17year, so you're saying, all right, well, we're increasing a
- 1:00:20little bit here, that's earmarked for facilities.
- 1:00:22And then as you're getting there, obviously facilities are
- 1:00:25not something that Happened right all the time, right?
- 1:00:29It's not the building is ongoing, but the fundraising
- 1:00:33needs to be ongoing for whenever we're ready to put those capital
- 1:00:38projects into motion. And I think this helps towards
- 1:00:42that. We're if we see we're falling
- 1:00:44behind in an area we can actually move on it instead of
- 1:00:47having to say, all right. Well let's save another few
- 1:00:50years and hopefully a big donor will come through and we might
- 1:00:53be able to do this in five years that five years becomes Maybe
- 1:00:57Two or three years now because you plan for it a little bit
- 1:01:00better, you've taken that into account as you're going along.
- 1:01:05Then. It's very true and you know, and
- 1:01:09that's kind of the way this to me is set up is they're looking
- 1:01:12to the Future. They're not, they're changing in
- 1:01:15a way the way they look at fundraising for the Apple
- 1:01:19apartment, and it's going to go back to the way, the Hokie Club
- 1:01:25has grown in the last five or six years and that's still part
- 1:01:29of it. The Hokey drive for 25 is still
- 1:01:32a big part of this initiative. But by saying this, I think what
- 1:01:38it's saying to people, this is how we're investing your money
- 1:01:41in. This is our goal, we're no
- 1:01:43longer trying to do what, what did we're not trying to be
- 1:01:48contenders. We are trying to be Champions
- 1:01:54and that was a in. You kind of heard him with
- 1:01:58Force. Like the expectations are no
- 1:02:00longer we're not in, it's almost any we're not fucking around in
- 1:02:03any sporting. We expect to be good.
- 1:02:07We expect to be competing. The expectation is to be eating
- 1:02:11for that conference title in every sport.
- 1:02:14Every year we're not going to have a down Year, we're not
- 1:02:18going to have a program that's out of competition.
- 1:02:21We're going to be there every year and I mean I think that
- 1:02:24that's a great vision and I like that and I like that we're
- 1:02:28approaching this from, we're going to set the standard We're
- 1:02:33going to set the standard of what a good program looks like
- 1:02:37in the ACC. And that's a big step forward
- 1:02:41for this because I feel like it's kind of been the way it's
- 1:02:46been before, it's kind of been like the difference between Like
- 1:02:52stepping up or doing box jumps like so instead of gradually
- 1:02:57will like B flat for several years then were like oh we got
- 1:03:01to catch up and then flat fold over use.
- 1:03:03Oh we got to catch up a little bit.
- 1:03:05We're not doing that anymore. There's a climb now and there's
- 1:03:09there's an Aiming point and I feel like that having that
- 1:03:11aiming point for the program is going to be good.
- 1:03:15Regardless of who's the coach in a couple years we're setting up
- 1:03:20whoever Is leading these individual teams for Success.
- 1:03:27It's very good man. I'm crying made.
- 1:03:30You put your Peter Griffin hat on because there was something
- 1:03:33done during the presentation, just go ahead and even
- 1:03:41gentlemen, Ron Ziegler. Why why we cut the Q&A, why we
- 1:03:48got the live feed for the Q&A? You already got the laugh feet
- 1:03:52set up. It's already there.
- 1:03:56Just leave it on and we listen and we hear it in real time.
- 1:04:01And you know what, you're not shortchanging the journalists
- 1:04:06there because I'll here and I'll still go out there and read what
- 1:04:11my name is Oleg. Writes about it or what David
- 1:04:14teal writes about, I'm still going to do that.
- 1:04:16Well, it's not stopping me from digesting their content.
- 1:04:20It's not stopping me from enjoying what you're putting
- 1:04:24out. There.
- 1:04:24I will, we watch the Q&A. We jumped on together, and
- 1:04:29watched it. And we also read everything that
- 1:04:33was written about it. Whether on Twitter or in local
- 1:04:37wild occasions about the Reach For Excellence campaign.
- 1:04:41We will digest it. Don't hide it from us,
- 1:04:44especially when we see when we watch the both of us, we watch
- 1:04:48the retracts on presentation live.
- 1:04:51And then today was today, right? All right old, you know, you've
- 1:04:58been a weak man, it's been a week.
- 1:05:00Every day feels like to, but we're sitting here watching it
- 1:05:05and we pause and say, well, how the bleep did you just keep the
- 1:05:08damn thing going? You're using the same camera
- 1:05:11angles. You're not showing the press and
- 1:05:14ignore the crowd. You're literally showing this or
- 1:05:17it off shot. When someone's asking the
- 1:05:19question. You're not doing anything
- 1:05:20different. Aunt.
- 1:05:22It's dumb. It's just dumb.
- 1:05:26So stop it. Stop it.
- 1:05:30There is officially now, you know, Brian, we were nice few
- 1:05:33weeks ago about, we understand if you can't live streaming but
- 1:05:36tell us what it is. And guess what?
- 1:05:37They told us when the Fuente thing was, which is great for us
- 1:05:40because at 10:00 we got to watch it or you know Twitter follow
- 1:05:43the interview. Didn't watch that one folks.
- 1:05:45Life's crazy but You've now shown us.
- 1:05:50It's really not that hard to do a live stream so you have no
- 1:05:54more excuses. You know who you are.
- 1:05:58You know who you are and much like his Twitter post, he timed
- 1:06:03the release of the live stream because it ran about 2/3 of the
- 1:06:10way from into Mike do Sollux. First question.
- 1:06:13And then the live stream, Of course you did.
- 1:06:19All right, Brian, anything breaking on the Twitter sphere
- 1:06:24or in general, by the way, we will not be here next week,
- 1:06:28folks. We're going to be probably doing
- 1:06:30it every couple weeks now. But next week is the draft best
- 1:06:36of luck to all of the Hokies in The graft.
- 1:06:40Brian's Crossing his fingers that certain guy slips down the
- 1:06:45board little bit for the The officer now officially because
- 1:06:51of you know, the small back surgery that came to follow yet,
- 1:06:56I know that fingers crossed that he can slip out of the first
- 1:06:58round and since we only essentially have about 75 roster
- 1:07:03spot, who's me five roster spots for the Niners?
- 1:07:07I'm really hoping that he slows far enough, we just take some
- 1:07:10capital and go up and get him. Okay, I'm while we probably
- 1:07:17could use an extra cornerback. I don't think he's the best
- 1:07:20scheme fit for the system that we have.
- 1:07:23So I'm not hoping the same thing in general.
- 1:07:27I hope he makes it in the first round just because that's good
- 1:07:31for the program and good for him obviously because that means
- 1:07:35more money which is never a bad thing especially when it comes
- 1:07:39to football players on their first contract.
- 1:07:41So, Hope that's good for him. I am hoping because the money is
- 1:07:47not that big of a difference between where he's projected and
- 1:07:50where we are. That Christian Dara saw does
- 1:07:55sink to the low 20s, and we can scoop him up there because we
- 1:07:59need a tackle, whether we end up slugging him in right there at
- 1:08:03left or doing some some switching and put him in it,
- 1:08:06right. I think he's going to be good.
- 1:08:08I'd be happy with him on either side of the line there.
- 1:08:11So yeah, it's me. Very true lady.
- 1:08:15Yeah, I'm like, you know, depending on what happens at 3
- 1:08:23You might be, you might want to drive over here.
- 1:08:26I'm going to go on the curve of your house, crying.
- 1:08:35I'll bring liquor. Hi, fap to my, I'll swear, as
- 1:08:42y'all know, I'm a 49ers fan and all I keep hearing is Mac Jones,
- 1:08:45Mac Jones. He's to fit.
- 1:08:47He's to fit and it's like this kid's.
- 1:08:49Got my body. Here's my shirt off right now.
- 1:08:56You probably couldn't tell the difference.
- 1:08:58And they're talking about public.
- 1:09:00Listen. We were at 12 and we took him, I
- 1:09:03have no issue. You do not trade that much draft
- 1:09:07Capital to get at what is best a Kirk Cousins at best?
- 1:09:13At is his ceiling. His floor, restore any backup
- 1:09:19player, any backup quarterback in the league and do we need to
- 1:09:23remind, folks? Worker cousin was taken.
- 1:09:26Even if you want to argue Kirk Cousins was taken too low.
- 1:09:29He was still taking well past pick number three.
- 1:09:35Other issue is With mac and this is me.
- 1:09:41I don't know what he is. A lot of people say, oh, he's a
- 1:09:43great processor, it's really easy to process when no one's at
- 1:09:47your feet. And when your guys are getting
- 1:09:49wide open, it's really easy to process.
- 1:09:53And so, he's essentially going to be playing with what this
- 1:09:57year is probably going to be four guys taken in the first two
- 1:09:59rounds to offensive actually 50. I'm sorry.
- 1:10:02I missed an extra player there. How could I?
- 1:10:05He's literally was playing with five.
- 1:10:09Sensual day, 1464 off the board. Yeah, it's insane and they were
- 1:10:16all positions that directly affected him.
- 1:10:20Throughout the running back, a left tackle and an interior
- 1:10:23offensive lineman. so think of it like this, what he was doing
- 1:10:28at Bama is like, if you took If you took the Top Flight players
- 1:10:36of an NFL offense and they got to go against the scout team all
- 1:10:42the time. Or against the rookies on
- 1:10:46defense all the time. Like, you're taking these
- 1:10:50high-level players and going against guys that are either
- 1:10:54inexperience, not used to going up against this level of talent
- 1:10:58or just not quite atletic enough.
- 1:11:02And that's, that's what Bama was doing against pretty much every
- 1:11:06piece of competition. And all that Jones had to do was
- 1:11:09like, oh, he's open and I'm not under selling the processing.
- 1:11:14I'm not under selling the Reeds that he was making, but I am
- 1:11:17saying that. It's a hell of a lot easier to
- 1:11:20make reads fast when guys get open.
- 1:11:23It's true and my my other word with him.
- 1:11:27He doesn't he has an average or slightly above average.
- 1:11:31Arm his athleticism. Isn't there?
- 1:11:34There's people here, are like a 47.
- 1:11:37Do he friend like or not? I've seen that kid run, man.
- 1:11:40Any 40 and at least a tenth to it.
- 1:11:43This year at least certain situations.
- 1:11:46You had two tenths. But everybody keeps saying
- 1:11:52schemes He's skiing fit and I'm really hoping it's one of the
- 1:11:56other three quarterbacks because, you know, everybody's
- 1:12:04like well he could be braiding. This is sorry.
- 1:12:10Sorry, I didn't mean to laugh that out loud.
- 1:12:14Let me dig this year. How many number one receivers
- 1:12:21were on that team like true? Like any other team they have
- 1:12:23been a number one. Receiver three Mike Evans.
- 1:12:30Chris Coghlan. How many upper left one tight
- 1:12:32ends that he have? That would have been starters on
- 1:12:35any other team to re-create OJ Howard.
- 1:12:41Yeah, I always forget OJ Howard. How many potential starting
