Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / 'COMPLETE stupidity' Dem under fire over pushback to new FAA tech
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: All right, this morning, flights resuming after thousands of cancellations
- 0:06Speaker 1: and delays at major airports yesterday.
- 0:08Speaker 2: When damaged lines at a key.
- 0:11Speaker 1: FAA center in Philadelphia left controllers without radar or communications
- 0:15Speaker 1: for hours.
- 0:17Speaker 2: The same failures that plagued Newark last year.
- 0:19Speaker 1: And Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says it only highlights the
- 0:23Speaker 1: need for more funding.
- 0:24Speaker 2: To upgrade the systems. He joins us now.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Mr.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Secretary, first, before we talk about how to make sure
- 0:29Speaker 1: it doesn't happen again, could you.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Tell us what happened as you saw it?
- 0:33Speaker 3: Sure.
- 0:34Speaker 2: So we have redundant lines.
- 0:35Speaker 3: It's point to point on telecom. One of our switches
- 0:39Speaker 3: went down and then one of the lines were cut.
- 0:42Speaker 3: And when that happens, you see a cascading effect in
- 0:45Speaker 3: the northeast. But this is not the first time, Brian.
- 0:47Speaker 3: It was six or eight months ago. This happened in Dallas.
- 0:50Speaker 3: And then it also happened in Minneapolis. So I've talked
- 0:53Speaker 3: about telecom and I have money for some of the
- 0:55Speaker 3: telecom replacing old copper wires, bringing in new fiber so
- 0:59Speaker 3: it's faster. The problem is this is a 40 year
- 1:03Speaker 3: old architecture or design. I need new money to do
- 1:06Speaker 3: a whole new design, a new architecture of telecom, so
- 1:10Speaker 3: it'll never go down. And these are the requests that
- 1:14Speaker 3: I have for Congress.
- 1:15Speaker 2: The FAA usually moves very slow.
- 1:18Speaker 3: We are moving at Trump speed, lightning speed, and safely.
- 1:22Speaker 2: To fix all the things that are wrong in our system.
- 1:25Speaker 3: The problem I have is I don't have the money
- 1:26Speaker 3: to do all the things that I need to do,
- 1:29Speaker 3: that America expects me to do, to make sure this
- 1:32Speaker 3: crap never happens again. But this is foreseeable. This will
- 1:35Speaker 3: not be the last time, Brian.
- 1:36Speaker 2: It happens.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Give us the money to fix everything in the system
- 1:41Speaker 3: so Americans always are safe and Americans always have their
- 1:44Speaker 3: airports that are open. They don't have old technology going down.
- 1:48Speaker 3: And then, you know, we have the U.N. week and
- 1:51Speaker 3: everyone's flying into New York. And this is what happens
- 1:54Speaker 3: if this isn't the sign for Congress to give us
- 1:57Speaker 3: the dollars.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I don't know what's going to be.
- 1:59Speaker 1: So, this is what Democratic Congressman Doug Beyer said. The
- 2:02Speaker 1: FAA should not use my constituents as guinea pigs for
- 2:05Speaker 1: the unproven AI air traffic control system that has American
- 2:08Speaker 1: lives in its hands. I'm calling on the FAA to
- 2:11Speaker 1: immediately suspend use of AI system at Washington area airports
- 2:15Speaker 1: until its safety has been established.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Your reaction? Yeah, no, I know, Don.
- 2:21Speaker 3: I like Don. I mean, this is just complete stupidity.
- 2:25Speaker 3: The problem with this analysis is our new software is predictive,
- 2:29Speaker 3: so we can predict weather and make better decisions on
- 2:32Speaker 3: when we fly in weather. I always do it safely,
- 2:35Speaker 3: but don't remain in a ground stop longer than we
- 2:37Speaker 3: have to. Let's predict if we're going to have four
- 2:40Speaker 3: airplanes arrive at DCA where you have one runway, Brian.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Let's curate them so they all get there minutes apart
- 2:48Speaker 3: and they all can land and have a runway open.
- 2:50Speaker 2: So they don't have to circle.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Let's give predictive information to our airlines that they're all
- 2:55Speaker 3: not booking their flights in the same time period, bringing
- 2:58Speaker 3: in delays when.
- 2:59Speaker 2: You have clear weather, clean weather, no wind. We already
- 3:02Speaker 2: have built-in delays because of the schedules.
- 3:05Speaker 3: It's a tool that's used to better manage traffic. Our
- 3:08Speaker 3: air traffic controllers, Don, are the ones that will always
- 3:12Speaker 3: manage the airspace. This is just better information for our
- 3:16Speaker 3: people at the FAA to make better decisions so you
- 3:19Speaker 3: fly without delay or cancellation way better than what you've
- 3:22Speaker 3: had in the past.
- 3:23Speaker 1: So his comments were without basis of fact. But when
- 3:26Speaker 1: you talked about the actual incident, was this just.
- 3:28Speaker 2: A human error?
- 3:29Speaker 1: Where somebody inadvertently cut the line and the redundancy wasn't effective?
- 3:33Speaker 2: And won't that always be the case as long as
- 3:35Speaker 2: we have human beings?
- 3:37Speaker 3: Yeah, so this was a cut line.
- 3:39Speaker 2: You're right.
- 3:39Speaker 3: It was New Jersey Transit cut the line, but it
- 3:43Speaker 3: was a switch failure as well with our redundant line. No,
- 3:47Speaker 3: this won't happen in the future. With the new architecture,
- 3:50Speaker 3: there will be no single or dual points of failure.
- 3:54Speaker 3: There's multiple routes that we can bring telecom into all
- 3:57Speaker 3: of our facilities. So with that new architecture, this will
- 4:02Speaker 3: never happen again. And we're using that architecture of an
- 4:07Speaker 3: old system from the 80s, Brian.
- 4:09Speaker 2: This doesn't work anymore.
- 4:11Speaker 3: No one uses this kind of old system any longer,
- 4:14Speaker 3: which is why we need to bring the FAA into
- 4:17Speaker 3: state-of-the-art technology. That's what President Trump has asked for. That's
- 4:20Speaker 3: what he's charged me with. That's what I'm asking Congress
- 4:23Speaker 3: for the money for.
- 4:24Speaker 2: And, Brian, one other point. For the American people who are.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Always concerned about budgets like I am and debt like
- 4:29Speaker 3: I am— We are on time and we are under
- 4:32Speaker 3: budget on everything that we're doing. We're demanding great performance
- 4:36Speaker 3: from our contractors and we're getting better pricing than we
- 4:39Speaker 3: ever could have anticipated because American companies want to be
- 4:43Speaker 3: part of this American solution to fix the problem in aviation.
- 4:47Speaker 3: And by the way, when they do it for us,
- 4:49Speaker 3: a lot of them are going to go sell this.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Around the world.
- 4:51Speaker 3: But the announcement that came yesterday on smart, this predictive
- 4:56Speaker 3: tool is going to fundamentally change the experience.
- 5:00Speaker 2: That people have in the skies. And so as we
- 5:02Speaker 2: do a.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Slow roll, we're going to start in the national capital
- 5:05Speaker 3: region here, but it's going to gradually expand out. And
- 5:09Speaker 3: we hope as we get into the spring of next
- 5:12Speaker 3: year and get into the summer travel season, and especially
- 5:14Speaker 3: when you have so much weather in the Northeast, it's
- 5:16Speaker 3: going to change the experience for the American people. And
- 5:19Speaker 3: they've been demanding a different experience when they fly. We're
- 5:22Speaker 3: going to give it to them with a tool like this,
- 5:24Speaker 3: but also money to give a new telecom architecture.
- 5:27Speaker 2: You work across the aisle. You always have. And this
- 5:29Speaker 2: should not be something that's partisan. You have the program.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Let's do it. It'll affect everybody. Mr. Secretary, it was
- 5:35Speaker 2: great having you on. Thank you, Brian.
