- 0:08SPEAKER_01: Hi folks, welcome to another edition of This Week in Hockey East with Bridget Prue.
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: I'm Eric Galante.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: Really exciting week for us, not just because of all the games, but just the amount of games we have on Nesson for you this week.
- 0:19SPEAKER_01: Friday night, our Friday night hockey East game will be Boston College traveling to Northeastern.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: We're gonna talk more about that game in a little bit with Northeastern head coach Jerry Keefe, so we'll get to that.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: And then Saturday, part of a hockey triple header all day on Nesson, starting with the Bruins at one o'clock.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: That'll roll right into our first of two games between Providence and Lowell, and then we'll wrap up the night with Maine and BU.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: Should be an awesome day.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: So let's start with some of those Saturday games and try to break them down.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Starting with the earlier one at five o'clock, Providence will finish up its home and home by going to UMass Lowell.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: Let's start with the Friars Bridget, who had themselves a pretty nice weekend at St.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Thomas last weekend.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they've had a little bit of a bounce back after that Michigan weekend.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: And you watch what they've been able to do production-wise, especially in that series in St.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Paul, Minnesota.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: 16 goals in their last three games.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: They're 2-0-1 over that stretch.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: And it was their first trip out to St.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Thomas.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Uh and Friday, they end up uh, you know, not coming out.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Uh, they have the tie, they didn't quite get the win.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Then in the most recent game on Saturday, they put up seven goals.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: They scored six unanswered goals to dig out of what was a four-to-one deficit.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Uh, and they end up with a seven to four win at the end of the game.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: And those goals are all scored by different goal scorers.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Uh PC's offense, too, the output, 14 uh goals in the last three games since that Michigan series, that's helped PC really turn the page on a tough weekend against a really tough team.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Uh, some individual achievements that we should spotlight as well.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, John Mustard comes to mind right away.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: The sophomore had a good freshman year, but you're already seeing him grow and add on to that, especially offensively.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: And when we talked to Nate Lehman last year, he was always highlighting John Mustard as a guy who never was on the score sheet as much as he as he thought he should be because he was doing the little things, the right things away from the pocket.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: He had a few goals called back that really would have helped with the stats.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: But this year you've seen it uh go right for him.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: And he's got uh points in all five games that he's played so far, four goals, two assists.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Lehman saying he had an incredible offseason, which has led to some of that growth for his second collegiate year.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And first round draft pick, Roger McQueen, who a lot of people have had eyes on this season because he went so high in last year's draft.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: And he was one of those uh coveted centers that people were talking about in the same sentence and in the same breath as uh James Hagg for BC.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: So he goes to Providence College and he's a really strong uh contributor at the face-off dot this season.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: He was dominant on Friday, he won 15 of his 19 faceoffs in that game, and he's 64.4% on the season, which is the highest uh face-off percentage in hockey east among the group of 14 players who have taken more than 70 face-offs this year.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: So, of the guys who are getting those reps, he's got the best percentage.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: So he's done that there.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: And he's also created a lot of chances despite not having scored his first collegiate goal yet.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: And Nate Lehman commented on that this week.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: He said he's already seen progress since the start of the season, and that these all these opportunities that he's been generating, it's gonna go at some time soon here.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: And to look at the special teams as well, PC's penalty kill and power play have been pretty good early on.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: The penalty kill at 91% allowed two power play goals on 22 kills so far.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: And the power play maybe even better.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Short sample size, but five for 15, that's 33.3% on the power play this year, taking advantage of those opportunities.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it'll be interesting because you know, you kind of almost throw out those first couple games against Michigan.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: They're so early in the season.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: Providence is such a young team, so many new players.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: It's gonna take a little time.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Late Lehman said, we gotta be patient, but we're really excited about what we have.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: It'll be a challenge to go up to Lowell this weekend.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: Kind of similar, right?
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Lowell, nice offensive weekend.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: They score eight goals on the road against Mercyhurst.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: They had to come back Saturday just like Providence did.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: They were down 3-1 after two periods.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: But Dylan Bentley scored twice on the power play.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: Mirko Buttazoni scored.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: They eventually come out with a four-to-three win.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: Special teams has been a story for Lowell, too.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: They're at 26% of their power play to start the year, scored three times over the weekend.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: But the penalty kill has been especially good.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: 20 for 22 so far.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: They did allow a five-on-three goal on Saturday, but they have not allowed a four-on-five-on-four goal, excuse me, in their last four games.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: I thought it was especially good against Western Michigan when I was up there for those games.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: I, you know, Western was pretty good that series, but Lowell did a great job on their penalty kill.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: You know, a couple names that we've seen a lot of.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Six assists so far this year, freshman.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: I was pretty impressed with Austin Elliott when I saw him against Western.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: I know the numbers aren't going to pop, but I thought he looked pretty good.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: And Samuel Richard, the other goalie, at a 30 save shutout on Friday.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: And we know Norm likes to play two goalies.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: So a lot to like in this Providence Lowell matchup, which will lead us in to BU going up to Alfond Arena in our nightcap on Saturday.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, another good game.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: BU against Maine.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: And I'll just start with the BU side of things.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Uh, BU is coming off a weekend split.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: They played against a ranked UConn team last weekend.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: They lost eight to four in the Friday game.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Uh, and you could really see UConn's speed and connectedness coming into play, and it kind of felt like it got away from them on Friday night.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: But then they were able to come back and respond with a win three to one in Saturday's game, which has kind of been a trend reacting and uh coming out a little bit stronger on the second game.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: And when you look at where they got their scoring from on Saturday, they got two goals from Jack Harvey and a power play goal from senior transfer Owen McLaughlin.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: He's had three goals in the last two games.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: And then uh we always have to mention Mikalia Gorov in net.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: He looked better on Saturday uh than he did on Friday.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: He just allowed one goal in the Saturday win, uh 960 save percentage in that game.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: And Jay Pandolfo said it was just a great response from our team, a great response from Big Mike, uh, who, you know, that's what he calls Mikelia Gorov.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: He said Big Mike was excellent, and he said he liked the team's effort from start to finish on Saturday.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I think certainly a bounce back there.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: You look at what they're gonna deal with with Maine.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: A little bit of an interesting couple weeks for Maine, right?
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: They had that big lead against Quinnipiac on Friday.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: They end up not being able to hold that lead, a tie, then they lose the Saturday game.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: They come home for Colgate, they lose on Friday, they're down to nothing on Saturday, but to their credit, they come back for an overtime win.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, in the two Colgate games, they scored five goals, but their expected goals were much higher than that.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: So it was certainly not for lack of generating chances.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: So I think that'll get back to what we usually see from Maine offensively.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: A lot of time on the penalty kill.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: They've allowed seven power play goals the last four games.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: So that's something to watch with how good BU's power play is.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: Uh, again, not perfect results, but they've been really good in the third period the last few games.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: They've only allowed five total shots in two games against Colgate.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: So it should be a really interesting matchup.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: That should be a great double header.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: BU in Maine following Providence and Lowell.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: That follows what we'll see on Friday in Matthews Arena, BC and Northeastern.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: We'll talk about the Huskies with Jerry Keefe coming up on this week in Hockey East.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to this week in Hockey East.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: We're happy to be joined by Northeastern Vents Hockey head coach Jerry Keefe, presented by Boston Harbor Hotel.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Plan your fall getaway today at BostonHarborHotel.com and experience Boston's best waterfront use.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Great to have you.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Uh, Jerry, thanks for joining us.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: I wanted to start first of all with you guys getting off to that 3-1 and oh start to the season.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: What are your thoughts on the team that you have this year and what they're doing well?
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, thanks for having me.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: Um, this is a real fun group to work with.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: We um I thought we had a real good preseason um attention to detail every day in practice.
- 8:00SPEAKER_02: We've got really good leadership.
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: I think our practices have led right into um us playing well in the in the last couple games.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Um, and like I said, our leadership is really leading the way for us.
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: So uh it's a lot of fun to come to the rink every day.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: Guys are excited.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: Um, two big wins over really good teams, and you know, that's a it's a great way to find ways to to win close games against really good opponents early on the season.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about that Denver game specifically, a one-nothing victory.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: Obviously, your goaltender was awesome in that game.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: What were your biggest takeaways to come out with a victory?
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um LZ was great for us in net.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: You know, we had some breakdowns, which you're gonna have against a really good team like Denver.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: Um, but the one the one thing I really liked is you know protecting the lead in the first in the third period.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: Uh it's a one-nothing hockey game.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: I thought we came out, we played on our toes in that period, and you know, we we we did bend, but we didn't break.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: And uh when we did, LZ was there to help us out.
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: Uh, but we had confidence going into the third period, knowing that if we played a certain way, uh we were gonna have success in that game.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: So that was a that was a big win for the group.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: Gave us a lot of confidence.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's actually what I was gonna ask you about next.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Just with the start being as good as it's been, and with those wins over-ranked teams like Denver and UMass, what what does that mean for the rest of the season?
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: What does that mean going forward for things, maybe some certain aspects of your game in particular that you're confident about and just the the overall general feeling for the team?
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, it's you know, they are big wins and you want to build off them.
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: We weren't perfect, so there's a lot of things that we can do better um that you can take from those games.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: And um, every game is is gonna be tough all the way out.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: You know, we we got BC this weekend, obviously we know how good they are.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: Um, but I think those wins, learning how to win close games is really important.
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: Um, because at the end of the day, when you're when you're getting into the big game, especially late in the season, usually they're one-goal games.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: You're either down a goal, up a goal, going into the third period, and those are the ones you you have to learn how to win, and you got to feel comfortable in those games.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Jerry, obviously you had Cam Whitehead for a long time.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: Devin Levi before that.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: You've had some great goalies going back.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: How important was it to bring in someone with the experience of Lawton Zacher?
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: And what has he brought to the table so far?
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, number one, he's a great teammate.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: The guys love him.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: Um, he's very competitive, has a lot of fun in practice.
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: He's got a great way of bottom in the locker room.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: Um, and right there, you know, you know you guys want to go to war for him.
- 10:31SPEAKER_02: So um he gives our team a lot of confidence.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: You know, having having that experience, you know, the last couple years in college hockey was really important.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, we wanted to bring someone in that um we felt could, you know, has played in some big games and in close games and played against good opponents.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: And um obviously he wasn't afraid to go in and play at UMass and he wasn't afraid to play at Denver.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: So um good on him.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: He's been really good for us so far.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: You know, we've been spending so much time talking about the new things happening in college hockey and major junior guys, and and certainly you guys have one, but you have all these USHL guys as well, the old path of recruiting in college hockey.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: Uh, really some like outstanding years in the USHL.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: Just tell us a little bit about your freshman class from guys like Giacomo Martino, who obviously led the USHL, what you were trying to build with this freshman class, and how they've been able to hit the ground running so far.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's we're really excited about this freshman class.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, they they're a little bit older.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: They had the opportunity to play the extra year in junior hockey.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: Um, although we are young with a lot of freshmen up front, we feel like they're they're ready to make an impact in college hockey, and which isn't easy to do.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: Uh the USHL is a tremendous league.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: We've done a lot in the USHL in the past, and uh we'll continue to do that.
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, there's a lot of difference makers in that class, and um they're great kids.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: Um, I think they're skilled, but they work, they compete, they're great teammates.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: So um overall, you know, a guy like like Marty who leads the league in scoring, and and DC Dylan Compton led all the defensemen in scoring last year.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, you look at a kid like Yajibi, who's coming from a tremendous program in Cedar Rapids, who's their leading scorer.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: Uh Picard and Maltese from a great program with Lincoln.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: Um so yeah, we we've been, I'm sure I thought I forgot a few there, but um, you know, they're it's a really good class.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: And and like I said, more importantly, they're they fit into Northeastern um and the way we do things and our culture, and um, we're really excited about that moving forward.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I wanted to ask you about Vinny Burghese.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: He led the nation in Time on Ice last year.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: Once again, the NCAA Time on Ice leader.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: Can you speak to his endurance and maybe his leadership and what he brings to the group?
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, first off, he he has been tremendous wearing the C4s this year.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: It really started when our season was over last year, when he made the commitment to come back.
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: Um, you can tell how important playing at Northeastern is to him and how bad he wants to win.
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: And and that meant a lot to our coaching staff.
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: And um, yeah, he he just he came in with a mindset this year that it was everything was team first, and um, he's shown that.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: You know, he he obviously practices hard because if you can play that many minutes, it starts during the week, and uh he's got great habits all week in practice, and he's a guy that can just skate all day, you know.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: He um he's he's got great endurance, uh he's light on his feet, and um, you know, we're we're very fortunate to have uh Vinny uh leading the way for our team this year.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: Now that you have your second half schedule set and it's been released and you know where you're playing, what logistically does that look like for you guys?
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: Uh, can you talk us through uh you know where where you guys are playing and then maybe the message to the team about how you want the group to approach it?
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we we haven't really talked about the second half at all with our team.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: Um honestly, just our our focus is off to getting getting off to a really good start in the first half.
- 14:05SPEAKER_02: So we haven't we haven't spent much time on that at all.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, we know we'll we'll have some challenges playing on the road a little bit.
- 14:12SPEAKER_02: Um, but you know what?
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: I I think our group likes challenges.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: I know our coaching staff likes challenges, so um we'll we'll get to that part um you know after December 13th, our last game at at Matthews.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: Um but uh we really want to focus on getting off to a good start this year and and keep uh keep going game to game and week to week here in practice.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: Jerry, obviously, you know the big story because of that is Matthew's arena and your last couple of games there.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: Can you just give us maybe a little thought on having spent so much time in the building, you know, what it means to you and what it means to get to play these final couple of games in Matthews?
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's uh this is a special place, there's no doubt.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: This is my 15th year at Northeastern, uh, which is hard to believe.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: Um so I've spent a lot of time in this building, um, you know, played played in this building and and watched a lot of hockey in this building uh before I even got to Northeastern, and it really is a special place.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: So it's um you know, we're so busy right now that um you try not to think about it too much.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: Um you just kind of think about the the next day and getting ready for uh your next opponent.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: But I think when um when early December starts to come around, I I think it's really gonna start to hit me.
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: Um but um just wanna want to go out and make it the best uh the best last couple months here before uh before we move on.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, Matthews Arena, and it's uh I know a lot of people, it's a special rink to a lot of people.
- 15:39SPEAKER_02: Um it's been great history in this place, and um, yeah, we'll be sad when uh when it's gone.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: Well, we're looking forward to being there on Friday, and we wish you all the best the rest of this year, Jerry.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: Thanks so much for giving us a few minutes.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: You bet.
- 15:53SPEAKER_02: Keep up the great work.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Appreciate you having me on.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: Thanks, Jerry.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: That's Jerry Keep, the head coach of Northeastern.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: We'll continue on with This Week in Hockey East coming up after this.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to This Week in Hockey East.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: I'm Bridget Crew here with Eric Galante.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: It's time to go around Hockey East on the women's side.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: The women are all in conference action this weekend, including a meeting between UConn and Holy Cross.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: And Eric, both of those teams have winning records heading into this weekend series.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what a start for Holy Cross, right?
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: Four straight wins.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: There's seven and two to open the season, including five and oh at home.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: Couple of big reasons why.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: Let's start with a couple of freshmen.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: First, Violet Carroll, who's our Jersey Mike's a sub-above player of the week from Milton, Massachusetts.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: Four points last weekend against Post.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: She now has points in five straight games, including three of those were multi-point games.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: She's been really awesome so far.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: Um, and I think it's just, you see, kind of a balance scoring effort, right?
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: Alexia Morrow, who we've talked so much about through the years, she's been really good to start.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: Familiar names with this Holy Cross team to go along with a freshman like Carol coming in.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: And then the goaltending's been awesome so far.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: Brooke LaRanje and Abby Horning have combined for a 930 save percentage so far this year.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, you can't ask for much more than that.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: Uh, obviously, big challenge this weekend with UConn, right?
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: In this Saturday-Sunday series, UConn has played a really challenging non-conference schedule, 4-0-1 in their last five games.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: Um, they got a little bit of a challenge from Mercy Hearst last weekend.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: They got a tie in game one.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: Uh, they had to then break a 2-2 tie late in the second period with goals from Claire Murdoch and Julia Pellerin.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: But the thing that really is amazing about this series is these games have been so close.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: The last three meetings last year between these two teams, the final scores were two to one in overtime, two-nothing, and one-nothing.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: So, I mean, these teams play close, close games, low-scoring games.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: And I don't think there's any reason to think that this is going to be much different.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, another uh good matchup this week to spotlight is the rematch of the Hockey East Championship game last uh last season, which is BU and Northeastern.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: They've met in a lot of important games recently.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: They have met in the last two beanpot finals, uh, as well as BU taking down Northeastern in the 2025 Hockey East Women's Championship game in overtime, three to two, which was a very suspenseful game.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: And it's so they've met in these big moments, and it's really added to the rivalry uh between these two teams.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: Northeastern had been really dominant over the last six or so years, maybe even more than that.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: And then now BU coming back to form, uh, getting back towards the top of the conference.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: And I think this is going to be a really tight, interesting matchup.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: And Northeastern this season, they started the year with uh four straight wins, but last weekend faced Rank Winapia team.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: They dropped both of those games.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: For BU, the opposite.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: They had a slow start to the season.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: They dropped their first five games, they got their first win of the season last weekend a four-to-one win against UNH in their only game of the weekend.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: And Sidney Healy was the star of that game, in my opinion.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: She had uh the game-winning goal, she had an empty net goal to steal the win uh for the Terriers.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: Uh, and and I wanted to spell it too, freshman Lucy Thiessen, also a great showing for her.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: She's showing her offensive ability as a young defenseman, and she led the team with 10 shots, got her first collegiate goal in that game.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: And uh, in particular, in that UNH game, she looked really good.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: Two other players to, or one other player to spotlight offensively, Kaylee Quigg, she scored a short-handed goal.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: And then grad transfer goalie.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: Michelle Pasechnik in net got her first win for the Terrans.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: And uh, before we switch back over to talking about some of the men's stuff, it's time to spotlight this week's service credit union scoring leader, Riken Kirchmeyer, who had four goals in PC's seven to six overtime win against number 13, St.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: Thomas.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: Kirchmeyer is just continuing to show.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: She's one of the top producers in Hockey East.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: She led the Hockey East woman in points last season with 37.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: And can she do it again?
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: She's looking like she's she's really pretty much back up to form that she was last year.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it'd be fun to see if she can do it again.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: We will see what happens.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: Uh, we'll finish up with some more men's games on the other side on this week in Hockey East.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: Time to continue around Hockey East by Boston Children's Hospital.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: We appreciate them being the official children's hospital of Hockey East.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: Boston Children's where the world comes for answers.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: Let's talk a little bit about the Friday night game.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: We talked with Jerry Keefe about Boston College and Northeastern.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: This is a Thursday Friday series.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: Eagles are coming off a little bit of a tough loss to Denver.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: 7-3 was the final score.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: It did stretch out at the end a little bit, but a couple of positives to mention for BC.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: Number one, their third line has been awesome.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: We talked a lot of Dean Laterno last week.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: He's part of that line.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: So we won't go into that a ton because of, you know, we talked about it last week.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: But along with guys like Will Vote and Jake Sandriel, I thought Jake Sondriel was maybe the best player on the ice in that game on Friday.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: Someone like Greg Brown said, you know, he had a really nice year last year.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: It just, you didn't see the scoring.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: We talked about it with some of the other guys we've talked about on the show today.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: But boy, that sophomore year hits and all of a sudden the scoring has ticked up in a major way.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: The other thing I thought was really important to see was, you know, Beastie's first line is out there.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: Denver just scored a couple goals in a row.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: It was a 5-2 game at that point.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: And in a moment when Beastie needed a goal, James Higgins was there and took a really outstanding shot from the outside.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: You'll get a look at it right here.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: The reason that I bring this up for Bruins fans is that James Higgins has made it a point of emphasis to work on his shot this year.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: Greg Brown said he's practiced it every day in practice, really trying to become an elite-elite shooter.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: Not that he ever had a bad shot by any means, but just really trying to make that an extra part of his game.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: We saw it on a goal against RPI.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: I think we saw it on that goal there against Denver.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: So that's something to look for in Haggins' game as he continues to try to develop.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: And Bruins fans obviously are watching what he does at Boston College, Bridget.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, last year we saw him be a great playmaker and a great, yeah, he had a lot of assists, and he's setting up a lot of guys now.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: It's his turn to try to uh be that guy to put the puck in the back of the net, too.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: And to look at the Northeastern side of things, it's still early in their season.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: They've only played four games.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: That's tied for fewest games played in hockey east so far.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: So we're still kind of starting to figure out who they are.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: But what they've shown so far with two wins over top 15 ranked teams, you heard Derek Heave say he's pretty encouraged by uh small sample size on special teams, uh, only seven penalty kills so far, nine power plays.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: Uh still working things out, allowed one uh penalty kill goal, uh scored one power play goal.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: And then something that we've noticed so far this season, two early trend, Lawton Zacker has been great in net.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: Uh he comes over to the Huskies after two seasons at Brown.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: Uh last game he had 35 saves and a shutout against number seven Denver.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: Uh and he currently is the second best goals against average in Hockey East.
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: Uh 202 goals against average and a 930 save percentage, which is fourth best in Hockey East.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: And we talked to Jerry Keep about the schedule in the second half.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: It's come out.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: We want to take a look at that, just show people what it's going to look like for them.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: And you can see it's spread out across five different ranks for the men.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: Walter Brown, Harvard, uh Bentley, those ranks all in use.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: The women, a similar thing.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: At least those ranks are still close in the Boston area for them to get to.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: And we talked about NU's one over Denver, just another example of uh top teams getting knocked off by unranked opponents.
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's been the story of the year.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: We'll talk more about it next week.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: How many upsets of these top 10 teams so far?
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: It's really amazing.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: There's already been 11 of them on ranked teams beating top 10's opponents.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: It's going to be an awesome week of games.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: Can't wait to watch them with you.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: Thanks so much for joining us once again on this week in Hockey.
